fred@denpubs.com TICONDEROGA — The Ticonderoga Alumni Association has again honored its own. Elliot Shaw Jr. of Delmar and Thomas Burleigh of Dunwoody, Ga., and Ticonderoga were recently presented with Distinguished Alumni Awards. Special Service Awards were given to Richard Arthur of Ticonderoga, John Bartlett of Ticonderoga and the late Don Gijanto Sr. The awards ceremony was held at Ticonderoga Country Club. “I think, other than giving scholarships, this is the most important thing the alumni association does,” said Joyce Cooper, president of the alumni association. “It’s important that we recognize and honor successful Ti High graduates for their accomplishments.” Shaw, a 1977 Ti High graduate, attended Siena College, where he served an internship with The Business Council of New York State. After graduation he stayed with the council for 20 years, becoming director of government affairs. He worked with Governors Mario Cuomo, George Pataki and Elliott Spitzer and helped draft major legislation relating to health care and state worker ’s compensation. Shaw is now director of government affairs for WellCare of New York, where he monitors New York’s Medicaid system. He has served on many boards relating to health care as well as the Albany International Airport board of directors and the SUNY-Albany Prevention Research Center board. Shaw lives in Delmar with his wife, Penny, and children, Chris and Ted. Burleigh, a 1952 Ti High graduate, attended Union College and had a long career in sales and marketing. He spent 20 years with International Paper as manager of sales before moving to Keith Clark Company, where he eventually became president. He ended his career as president of the American division of the British firm Portals, Inc.

Historic Places, is listed as the “Birthplace of the Electric Age” since it is the site of the first industrial application of electricity in the United States in 1831. The electricity was provided by a simple battery known as a “wet battery,” which in turn was used to power one of Joseph Henry’s electromagnets. The electromagnet was used in Ironville to recharge the magnetic prongs on the magnetic ore separator, a machine used to remove the iron from the crushed ore. The magnet also became a novelty and people would come from miles to see it’s strength. Thomas Davenport, of Brandon, Vt., was so fascinated with the magnet at Ironville that he purchased it from Allen Penfield at a cost of $75. With the experimentation that Davenport did on that magnet, it lead to his invention of the electric motor in the mid 1830s.

Nutrition, healthy lifestyles messages delivered By Fred Herbst fred@denpubs.com TICONDEROGA — Ticonderoga Central School District teachers started the academic year hearing from health professionals. “Over the past few years we have been mandated by the state to create policies and procedures regarding health related issues,” explained John McDonald, Ti school superintendent. With assistance from the Dan Padula Memorial Fund, the school hosted Dr. Elizabeth Jaffe and Dr. Matthew Gammons. “We have a Health and Wellness Policy which aims at nutrition and a healthy lifestyle,” McDonald said. “Last year we started measuring students BMI (body mass index) to create procedures for Child Obesity. This year we created a Life Threatening Allergy policy related to students with severe allergies which can result in anaphylaxis. “We thought it would be a good idea to begin the year with a health and wellness theme — even our facilities are getting healthier — and to have guest speakers to discuss these topics with our staff and how they relate to schools and students,” McDonald said.

Dr. Elizabeth Jaffe Jaffe is an allergy, asthma, immunology specialist, who has been a physician at Timberlane Allergy and Asthma Associates in Burlington since 1997. She has a doctorate degree in genetics and was a laboratory biologist in the field of genetics for 13 years before becoming interested in medical practice. “Our first speaker, Dr. Betsy Jaffe, discussed anaphylaxis commenting on facts, misconceptions and how to handle students with severe allergic reactions,” McDonald said. “She was outstanding and very well received.” Gammons is a sports med-

icine physician with the Vermont Orthopaedic Clinic and Killington Medical Clinic, Killington, Vt. Gammons is board-certified in family practice and sports medicine. He specializes in sports medicine and non-operative musculoskeletal care. He enjoys several sports team affiliations, including serving as team physician for the U.S. Ski and Snowboard teams. “Our second speaker, Dr. Matt Gammons, discussed obesity, how our culture contributes to this problem and how it has impacted our children,” McDonald said. “Once again, he was very good and well received.” The Dan Padula Memorial Fund awards two scholarships each year to high school athletes interested in health sciences, a nursing scholarship at North Country Community College and a nursing scholarship at Clinton Community College, Padula’s alma mater. The fund also sponsors

health-related programs in the community, addressing issues such as smoking cessation, heart disease, childhood obesity and more.

TICONDEROGA — A Ticonderoga woman has inspired a book on cancer survival. Emily Corwin sparked author Carolyn Rubenstein to write Perseverance, a book of cancer survival stories aimed at inspiring others. Corwin was diagnosed with cancer the fall of her junior year of high school. She went on to endure 10 months of treatment to include a major Emily surgery that left her on crutches for almost two years. Through her experience Corwin kept her motivation and humor. The whole family stayed upbeat and positive, regardless of the daunting reality of Corwin’s condition. The family has always had religion as a center of their lives and Corwin drew from this from the start always knowing “I can do this. I’m going to be OK.” Corwin’s story is now published in Perseverance a collection of cancer survivor ’s stories by Rubenstein. All of the proceeds from book sales will go to cancer patients and cancer research. Perseverance is sold nation wide in all major book stores and locally at LaChute Books in downtown Ticonderoga. Rubenstein created a not-for-profit organization, Carolyn’s Compassionate Children, to help children with cancer and other serious illnesses. It includes scholarships for college-bound cancer survivors. It was through this website, Corwin applied for a scholarship and Rubenstein became aware of her story. In June 2005 Rubenstein contacted Corwin to interview her for the book she was starting. “Emily Corwin planted the seed that grew into Perseverance, the book,” Rubenstein

said. “Emily was the first person I spoke to about writing a book that would transform lives through a beautiful ripple effect of inspiration, courage, hope and perseverance. “That was quite a lofty goal for a 20 year old,” Rubenstein continued. “However, Emily and her mom, Pat, believed in Perseverance from day one. They supported the vision of the book throughout the fouryear writing process. I am forever grateful to Emily for sharing her awe-inspiring Corwin wisdom about life.” Corwin’s main goal after her treatment finished and her surgery was to graduate high school with her class. Hard work and determination paid off as she accepted her diploma with her Ticonderoga High School class mates in June 2006. Corwin now attends Utica College studying child psychology. Her experience with cancer helped her to realize her career choice as a child life specialist. A child life specialist works in a hospital setting to help pediatric patients and their families. They advocate services such as, therapeutic interventions, education on diagnosis and procedure, and grief support. This fall Corwin is interning at Fletcher Allen Hospital in Burlington, Vt., with to finish her degree and pre-certification requirements. Corwin will graduate this december with a bachelor ’s degree, and will start preparing for her certification exam. After five years Corwin is still cancer free and looks to the future. She uses her experience to help other people, offering simple advice. “Make it fun. Laugh! Speak your mind, share your concerns and don’t be afraid to ask questions,” Corwin said.

6 - TIMES OF TI • OPINION

SATURDAY October 3, 2009

Soccer players are athletes, too To the Times of Ti: I was deeply disappointed when I read Ticonderoga Director of Athletics Mr. Bob Sutphen’s remark in a recent daily newspaper. In reference to the re-building of the Ticonderoga football team, Mr. Sutphen commented, “We may have graduated 23 seniors, but we’re not going to pack it up and play soccer.” As athletic director I would think Mr. Sutphen would be aware of the very successful youth soccer program going on at this time. Ticonderoga has

over 70 children, boys and girls, signed up and actively participating in the soccer program. I feel this is a strong indication that football is not the only fall sport that our students are interest in. Perhaps our school system and

board of education should take a look at how many students are interested in representing our school by playing soccer. I feel that would be a much more positive step than the remark that was made by the director of athletics. I feel a public apology to the soccer participants, their parents and the coach is called for. Marge Cross Ticonderoga

Once again, thank you for being more than our local pharmacy, but for also being our friends!

Our country used to be about preserving the constitution. Not anymore! This Administration seeks to circumvent the foundation of America. 1st Amendment: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; “or abridging the freedom of speech,” or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.12/15/1791 Our constitution has not been upheld, in fact it has been urinated on by our very own government the Illuminati. Our freedom of speech has just been undermined with the passing of the “Hate Crimes bill.” The government is working diligently to silence

Christians and Conservatives because of their Biblical foundation. They also seek to further this with the “Fairness Doctrine” and the FCC. Here are four key points to show the errors of this bogus hate crimes bill. 1. It is unconstitutional, we have freedom of speech. 2. No one has the right to physically assault anyone, we already have laws for that. 3. The judicial system will become burdened by bogus claims. 4. Taxes will need to be allocated to bolster policing and the judicial system. If someone doesn’t like your opinion that’s their problem. No one should be arrested or sued for speaking what is on their mind. We need to close the doors of dilemma, and open the doors of truth for everyone. So that all have

the right to express themselves without fear of prosecution. We don’t want to live in a country like China with martial law. I certainly don’t, and if you do, feel free to leave America anytime. This madness is unconstitutional, and it must be stopped no matter the cost! It’s time to wake up

America! Wake up and take back what is rightfully ours! Wake up and stand for freedom! Wake up and stand for the constitution! Don’t let these dastardly devils in congress take over! Let Freedom Ring! Don’t Tread On Me! Chad Jordon Ticonderoga

Are photocopies of coupons legal? O

nce again, I'd love to answer some questions from readers like you who are learning to super-coupon: Q: "My friend and I have been reading your column every week and we love your tips. My question is about Internet coupons. I know that you can usually print two copies of each one. We would all like to have more coupons. My friend said it is okay to make a copy of the coupons that print from the computer but I don't think this is right. Is it?" A: Many new coupon users wrongfully assume it is okay to make a photocopy of Internet-printed coupons. Since they printed it out from their computer, they conclude it must be okay to make more. But making photocopies of

coupons is illegal. It's coupon fraud. I've often equated this to photocopying a dollar bill. We all know that's illegal! And it's illegal to copy coupons, too. Internet coupons have unique identifiers and barcodes. When a store submits their coupons to be redeemed, a coupon clearinghouse scans the barcodes and the store receives reimbursement for each unique

barcode. If you make a photocopy of a $1 Internet coupon, each copy will be identical to the one before it. If you make 20 copies and use them all at the same store, your store will only be reimbursed for one of those coupons. You will essentially be stealing $19 from your store since the store no be paid for the bogus coupons. Truthfully, we all pay the price when shoppers copy coupons and submit them for savings. In many areas, stores have become increasingly wary of Internet coupons. Some refuse to accept them at all, a big frustration for shoppers. Finding and printing out coupons using the Internet is a great way to supplement the coupons we receive in the newspaper each

week, allowing us to obtain a larger number of coupons for the items we buy the most. Companies that offer printable coupons on the Internet usually set the coupons' print limit at two copies, so always go back and try to print the coupon again until you've received the message that the coupon is at its print limit. Remember, there are also times that a printable coupon will have higher print limits, too. Recently, a major cereal manufacturer had a $1 coupon on its Web site with a print limit of 14! That was a great opportunity to get a lot of coupons at one time. But it's never worth committing coupon fraud and risking prosecution over photocopying coupons. © CTW Features

Ti highway superintendent arrested By Fred Herbst fred@denpubs.com TICONDEROGA — Ticonderoga’s highway superintendent has been arrested, charged with accepting illegal kick backs from a vendor. Arthur “Pat” Morrison Sr. was charged with receiving reward for official misconduct, a Class E felony, and official misconduct, a Class A misdemeanor, Sept. 23. He will be arraigned in Ticonderoga town court at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7. Morrison, age 46, is alleged to have accepted $2,000 in retail store gift cards from a vendor in exchange for purchasing large volumes of chemicals at Arthur ‘Pat’ Morrison above-market prices. Ticonderoga Police Chief Mark Johns declined to name the vendor, citing an on-going investigation. It is not a local firm. The six-week investigation started when a routine state audit of town records revealed unusual purchases at the highway department, Johns said. Auditors were surprised to find large chemical purchases at extremely high prices, the police chief said. Their experience made them suspicious and they alerted Ticonderoga police. Morrison took office as Ti highway superintendent Jan. 1,

2008. The questionable purchases began in March 2008, according to investigators, and continued until April 2009. The chemicals purchased were cleaning and ice melting agents. Police said Morrison was aware his actions were criminal. “The essence of the charge is that he knowingly was involved,” Johns said. “He is fully cooperating in the investigation.” Morrison had little to say. “At this time I have been charged and I’m working closely in cooperation with the Ticonderoga police,” he said. The felony charge relates to the gift cards, while the misconduct charge relates to unnecessary purchases, Johns explained. No further charges are expected to be filed against Morrison, he said. The investigation was conducted by the Ticonderoga Police Department, the Essex County District Attorney’s office and the state Comptroller ’s Investigation Unit. Ticonderoga Supervisor Bob Dedrick said he became aware of the charges the day Morrison was arrested. Morrison is an independently-elected official and does not serve at the pleasure of the town board, so there is little trustees can do about the situation, Dedrick said, although he has asked the town attorney to investigate.

The Ticonderoga Alumni Association recently honored Elliott Shaw Jr. and Thomas Burleigh with Distinguished Alumni Awards and Richard Arthur, John Bartlett and the late Don Gijanto Sr with Special Service Awards. From left are Arthur, Burleigh, Shaw and Bartlett. Photo by Nancy Frasier

Ti From page 1 In retirement Burleigh, who lives in Georgia and spends summers in Ticonderoga, has been active in many charitable organizations such as the St. Vincent dePaul Society, Missionaries of the Poor, Atlanta homeless shelters and Habitat for Humanity. He served as president of ICare, an Atlanta-based organization that helps senior citizens with medical conditions, for six years. Burleigh and his late wife, Arthurlyn, have two children, Carolyn and Gordon. Arthur was salutatorian of the Ti High Class of 1956. He worked at International Paper in Ti while attending Albany College of Pharmacy. Bartlett has also been active in lobbying local government for property tax exemptions for low0income seniors and payments in lieu for taxes for improvements to downtown businesses. He has also authored several grant application for the town. Gijanto was a 1948 Ti High graduate. In 1954 he opened Adirondack Lanes with his brother James, becoming the sole owner in 1974. He joined Kiwanis in 1961 and became president and lieutenant governor of the Adirondack Division. He was a Kiwanian 37 years, until his death this spring, and was a leader in the creation of Ticonderoga’s Bicentennial Park. He became a Knight of Columbus in 1981 and held many positions, including Grand Knight, District warden and District Deputy. In 1988 he was named K of C Irishman of the Year in recognition of his community service. In 2008 Charles A. Moore Jr. of Queensbury and Howard Rathbun of Ticonderoga were given Distinguished Alumni Awards, while Special Service Awards were given to Ticonderoga Supervisor Bob Dedrick and Ti Historian Bill Dolback.

and this is who he found,” McDonald said. “We really appreciate his efforts and the help of the fund which allowed us to provide an outstanding program.” Ticonderoga will also institute a new program this fall in the elementary school, giving students fresh fruits and vegetables each day. “As part of our wellness efforts, we wrote and received a Fresh Fruits and Vegetables grant where all students in grades K6 will receive fresh fruits and vegetables everyday as a snack,” McDonald noted.

Cell towers gain APA approval ZACK’S SPORTS quires the Verizon tower to be cloaked as a pine tree to mitigate any possible visibility from drivers who stop at a near by rest area. Outcalt noted that allowing the construction of the two towers 1,400 feet apart will allow for future co-location as other cellular providers move into the area. “The potential for future co-location is there,” he said. “The towers would be

visible, but only from limited locations so they comply with the agency towers policy.” But not all commissioners were on-board with the plan, as Commissioner Dick Booth believes that this was a rare opportunity for the agency to require co-location and minimize the amount of towers dotting the Adirondack skyline. “My sense is there are relatively few places the

agency is in a position to demand co-location,” Booth said. “If there is a place for it, this is it.” Booth said that he supported cell phone expansion, especially along the I87 corridor, but couldn’t support the measure out of principle.

NORTH HUDSON — A gap in cell phone coverage between exit 30 and the town of North Hudson on the Adirondack Northway may be no more in the very near future. The Adirondack Park Agency Regulatory Programs Committee has approved the construction of two cell towers on the same parcel at a privately owned sandpit near Holiday Pond. According to APA Environmental Programs Specialist George Outcalt, Verizon Wireless will be constructing a 74-foot tall tower, while T-Mobile Wireless will be constructing an 85foot monopole tower. County officials confirms assessors’ qualifications Public had challenged Moriah’s assessors By Fred Herbst fred@denpubs.com PORT HENRY — Moriah assessors are all in full compliance with state regulations. Bernard Roy of the Essex County Real Property Tax Office, delivered that message at the Sept. 8 Moriah town board meeting.

Denton Publications, Inc. We’re more than a newspaper, We’re a community service.

HOW TO REACH THE

- ADVERTISING (518) 585-9173 Fax: 585-9175 Email: ads@denpubs.com Deadline: Monday 5PM

Roy attended the meeting to answer questions brought up by the public during the board’s August meeting. Some people had claimed the town assessors were unqualified and had not completed state-required course work. “It’s important that we clear the air on this,” Moriah Supervisor Tom Scozzafava said. Roy did that, presenting the board with documentaPaul Mazzotte tion from the state showing Moriah’s assessors to be fully qualified. Moriah is served by an elected, three-member board of assessors. Paul Mazzotte is the chairman. Other assessors are Brent Ida and Edward Carpenter. Roy told the town board state law required assessors to complete three assessment administration courses and five appraisal courses before taking and passing a written examination. The requirements must be fulfilled within three years of first being elected, Roy said. “If they don’t complete the courses they are removed (from office) by the state,” he said. Roy stressed assessors are elected officials. As such, he said, they answer only to voters — the town board has no authority to direct the actions of assessors. “They (assessors) have to answer to the voters every four years,” Scozzafava said. “The town board is not the boss of any other elected official.” Moriah assessors have been questioned and criticized

since last spring when a revaluation of the town raised property values. Mazzotte said the assessment hike was needed to meet state requirements that each community be assessed at full market value. Moriah was assessed at 88.5 percent of market value, according to the state, Mazzotte said. Although the assessment increase averaged 11.5 percent, it varied from property to property, the assessor explained. It wouldn’t be fair to simply raise everyone’s assessment without regard to improvements and new construction, he said. All 3,000 parcels in the town were assessed, Mazzotte said. The revaluation brought Moriah’s total assessed value from $270 million to $302 million, he said. Responding to the criticism, Mazzotte said statistics don’t support the concerns of many residents. “People say the economy is bad, that home prices are down,” he said. “Local (property) sales don’t reflect that.” He also disputed the notion that higher assessments lead to higher taxes. In fact, he said, if local government holds the line on spending people with an 11 percent assessment increase will see a slight tax decrease in 2009. Scozzafava acknowledged assessments don’t raise taxes. As an example, he told residents of his own assessment, which has increased from $72,300 in 2003 to $90,400 in 2009. In that same period, his town and county taxes decreased by about $20 a year. Mazzotte said failing to keep the local assessment roll current will cost taxpayers in the long run as the state lowers exceptions, such as the STAR program. Roy agreed with the need for full market value assessment.

Moriah youth football players get their chance to shine during halftime of a recent Moriah High School game at Linney Field in Mineville. The youth players expressed hope they will become future Vikings.

Medicare fraud About 10 percent of the money spent on Medicare is lost to fraud. When you consider that Medicare spends billions of dollars each year towards the health care of older and disabled citizens, the amount of dollars wasted is staggering. Medicare fraud can take many forms, but some of the most common include: • Providers charging for services, tests on equipment you never received. • Providers billing Medicare for different and more expensive services, tests, or equipment than those you received. • Individuals using your valid Medicare number to bill for services through fictitious providers. • Providers continuing to bill Medicare for equipment that has already been returned. • Providers billing Medicare for services that you may not qualify for, such as in-home care or electric scooters. Here’s what you can do. First, be suspicious if you are offered free equipment or services but are asked to reveal your Medicare number. Be even more suspicious if these offers come from telemarketers or door-to-door salesmen. Next, whenever you receive Medicare summary notices, check to be sure that the services listed are actually services you received. Finally, treat your Medicare card as a confidential document and only give out your claim number for definite, legitimate reasons. Suspect you’ve been a victim of fraud? First, call your medical provider. It may be you received tests you were unaware of, or that a simple billing error was made and can be corrected. If you still suspect fraud, call the NY State SMP Hotline at 1-877-678-4697.

Ten foods with lots of nutrition Some people have asked...what are the best foods to eat? Of course, we should eat a variety of foods because different foods provide different nutrients needed for good health. However, WebMD - “Healthy Eating and Diet” has a recommendation of 10 “super” foods to eat daily or nearly daily. Together they provide a good concentration of nutrients needed daily... protein, calcium, potassium, fiber, omega 3 fatty acids, antioxidants, vitamin C, A, E & K, iron, zinc, selenium, magnesium, phytonutrients, carbohydrates, and water. 1. Low fat or fat free plain yogurt fortified with vitamin D or skim milk - dairy foods contain nearly all the nutrients needed for total nutrition 2. Eggs - you may wish to limit to 3-5 egg yolks a week if your cholesterol is high, egg whites have no cholesterol 3. Nuts - limit to an ounce a day to avoid too many calories 4. Kiwi 5. Quinoa (keen-wa) or other whole grains such as barley, oats, buckwheat, whole wheat, wild rice, millet 6. Dried beans 7. Salmon or tuna - 2 times a week 8. Broccoli 9.
