Ti scouts learn about snakes TICONDEROGA — Ticonderoga Cub Scout Pack 72 heard from an expert on the Timber Rattlesnake recently. Dr. Bill Brown, professor emeritus from Skidmore College and lifelong researcher on the Timber Rattlesnake, spoke about ways to identify various kinds of snakes. He also told over 20 scouts facts about behaviors of Timber Rattlesnakes, their diet, where they live and how their rattles function. He showed photographs of the snakes shedding their skin, emerging from their dens, consuming their prey whole and even swimming in the water. He also explained the effects of human interaction on the rattlesnake population and

how humans must treat them with respect to avoid harming them. An often persecuted species, the Timber Rattlesnake is considered threatened in New York State where there was once a bounty set on killing them. There is a population nearby in the southeast part of the Adirondacks. Because they are venomous, it is best to leave these snakes alone, but Brown explained that it is most likely that they will run away long before they are discovered. Ticonderoga Cub Scout Pack 72, sponsored by the BPO Elks, meets on Tuesdays at 6 p.m. Families wishing to involve their boys in scouting may contact Sue Liddell at 585-6280.

St. Mary’s School, Ticonderoga, students in grades 6-8 recently celebrated “Name That Saint.” Each student researched and wrote about a saint throughout the month of October for both religion and English classes. Oct. 30 there was an all-school assembly where the “saints” gave clues to the lower grades and let them guess their identities. Saints included St. Bernadette, St. Patrick, St. Jude and St. Edith Stein. Above are Annette Hurlburt, Kasi Wendell and Rebecca White.

Beverly Sann, left, Ticonderoga CROP Walk coordinator, was joined at this year’s event by her sisters Florence Kunnas, center, of Ohio and Alice Benjamin of Central New York.
Ti walk aids needy TICONDEROGA — The tally is in for the Ticonderoga Church World Service CROP Walk. A record $4,502 was raised to benefit the hungry and poor. Local food pantries will get 20 percent of the money and 5 percent will go to the Ti Clergy Association Indigent Assistance Fund which helps people with emergency needs. “The rest will go to help the hungry in the U.S., as well as, around the world,” said Bev Sann, walk coordinator. The walk, which occurred on Oct. 17., had 51 people participate. Retired Lutheran minister Bob Johnson led the pre-walk prayer. Nancy and Jack Harrigan and Florence Kunnas from Ohio helped with registration. Alice Benjamin and Jill Brown helped with the pr-e and post-walk tasks. Some of the organizations which provided walkers and sponsors included Ti First United Methodist Church, St. Mary’s
(Catholic) School, Putnam United Presbyterian Church, Church of the Cross (Episcopalian), Ti Middle School, Ti High School, the youth group at Ti First United Methodist Church, Rotary Club of Northern Lake George, Adirondack Torch Club, Champlain Valley Chorale, the Ti Boy Scouts and the Carillon Garden Club. Registration facilities for the four-mile walk through Ti were provided by the Elks Lodge1494. Rest stops were furnished by St. Mary’s School (Sister Sharon Dalton) and Assembly of God Church. Refreshments were provided by members of First United Methodist Church, the Elks Lodge and Pastor and Mrs. Eric Stokesbury. “Despite the earlier forecasts of rain and snow, and despite the economic hard times, God and the people of the Ticonderoga area came through with a beautiful day, and a successful and fun CROP Walk,” Sann said. “and for this we are thankful.”

Hague firefighters plan benefit Ferry service To the Times of Ti:
On Saturday, Dec. 5, as a part of the annual Holiday in Hague Celebration, the fire department along with the Hague Chamber of Commerce and the Hague Sno-Goers, will sponsor a Karaoke Nite Contest at the Hague fire house to benefit the Jason Laundree Fire Training Fund. Refreshments and cocktails($5) will start at 6 p.m. and karaoke ($5) at 7 p.m. with first, second and third place winners. Come out and support this worthy cause. Our annual fire department Christmas party will be on Friday, Dec. 11,
and following tradition each member will be asked to bring an unwrapped toy or clothing item and a non-perishable food item. This year, in the interest of economizing, as well as showing off some gastronomic member skills, our own food committee, led by Linda Mury and Katy Wells, will be preparing the food.
New member Brianna Blodgett along with others, is seeking certification to be an active fire police. In October there were a combined total of 25 fire/EMT calls, using 280 man hours by 24 personnel, plus one water drill to Huletts Landing. The Christmas holiday season is just around the corner, and with it the urge to start decorating. As a word of caution, use only UL approved lighting systems, and be careful not to overload circuits. Be safe, not sorry.

Jubilee celebration a success at St. Mary’s School To the Times of Ti: The committee to honor Sister Sharon and Sister Ronald of St. Mary’s School and parish wishes to express its heartfelt thanks to so many who made the sisters’ 40th jubilee celebration such a memorable event. The Mass was made all the more joyous an occa-
sion with the participation of John Breitenbach, the combined choirs and the students of St. Mary’s. The work of Sue Liddell and the Catholic Daughters and Rich Fazioli and the Knights of Columbus was invaluable in setting up the reception at the school. They have come to our aid on so many occasions and we are deeply grateful.

Francine Burke and the staff and students of St. Mary’s added just the right touches with their greeting and decorations. The cross cookie favors from the Rutkowski family were a perfect addition. We certainly must make mention of the always-friendly help and professionalism of Beth and David Iuliano of Eddie’s Restaurant. There were many personal and exquisite expressions from so many in the community, and we know that many of you wish to remain anonymous. But be assured of our gratitude for the work and contribution
made by any and all in thanking these remarkable sisters. Finally, it is a pleasure to note the many Sisters of St. Joseph who shared this event with us. They are the latest in a long history of amazing women whose charity and humility are committed to the glory of God and the service to others — as perfectly seen in our own Sister Sharon and Sister Ronald. God bless you all. Karlene Gonyeau Jubilee Committee St. Mary’s School Ticonderoga

I
have had the privilege of representing the people of the town of Moriah for 20 years as their town supervisor. During my tenure, I have never experienced any disaster that has had as far reaching impacts as the closure of the Crown Point bridge. Hundreds of my constituents depend on this link daily to provide a living for their families. Many Albany must step up farms also depend on this vital link as do many other businesses along the corridor. Many people have also had to cancel their medical care from their specialists and also their hospital care in both Middlebury and Burlington, Vt. I also serve on the Essex County Board of Supervisors. Why this was allowed to happen is a travesty. Since 2004 the Essex County Board of Supervisors has moved resolutions stating the importance of repairing this bridge and have forwarded the resolutions to all of our state and federal elected representatives. I can see what this is causing thousands of people each day that depend on this bridge. As one of my constituents stated, we have built our lives around this bridge! I am tired of the lip service from our state officials. The immediate solution is a temporary ferry crossing near the existing bridge, that will run year round 24/7. This can and should be done now! It’s time that our elected officials listen to the majority of the people, not the special interest groups. At the end of the day, there must be accountability as to why this devastating situation was allowed to happen. Gov. (David) Paterson has ordered an investigation and for this I applaud him. But right now we need a way to get across this lake. Winter is setting in, the ferry in Ticonderoga will be closing and our people can not afford to drive 75 miles to get to work. Yes, the free ferry service is helpful, but it is still a distant drive to get there. Typical workday for many now is leaving your home at 4 a.m., getting to the bus, going to the ferry, crossing the lake, getting back on a bus, arrive at work for 7 a.m. No overtime, for if you do stay over you will not have a way to get home. And many also work 12-hour shifts. Child care is also a huge problem. Billions in stimulus funds are out there and here we are riding ferries to get to work! We have gone without in the Adirondacks for the past 40 years. Proof is that hundreds have to go to Vermont to find work. We need help now from Albany and Washington. Build the temporary ferry crossing now, time is running out. Gov. Paterson, come to Essex County and see what our constituents go through each day trying to provide for their families, and also pay taxes.

Couponing's best-kept secrets:
Some days are better than others

ple are under the impression that I practically live there!) The truth is much less exciting. I really do shop just once a week. But I always shop on one of days when both sales fliers are active. Another reason to shop earlier in the week is that stores will raise prices on many items later in the week. My store recently had a sale on a brand-name cereal. At $1.25 a box, it was already a great price; with a $1 coupon, I took it home for a quarter. That sale ran Sunday through Wednesday. On Thursday, the same cereal was still on "sale," but the new sale price? $2.50 a box. The price doubled in one day! This is one of those hidden little games the stores play, too. The same items may be on sale, but the sale price is a lot less attractive as the higher-traffic shopping days approach If you never clipped a single coupon, you would save a great deal of money just by shopping earlier in the week. If I had purchased my cereal on Thursday instead of Wednesday, I would have paid twice the price! Now, think about many other items in the grocery store take similar jumps in prices as the end of the week nears, and you'll see why it makes sense to shop on the days the sales overlap. If you need even more convincing, consider what happens when the same product is on sale in both sales fliers. I've seen crackers on sale for $1.99 in the long-cycle flier while in the short cycle flier, the same crackers were on sale Buy One, Get One Free! The smart shopper who is in the store on the days that the sales overlap, will not only get the crackers for $1.99, they'll take home a second package for free. And if they use a coupon on each box ... Oh, the possibilities! © CTW Features Jill Cataldo, a coupon workshop instructor, writer and mother of three, never passes up a good deal. uper-Couponing Secret: The day of the week we shop makes a huge difference how much money we can save. To understand this tip, consider this: Many grocery stores run two sales cycles each week. One flier comes out on Thursday and runs for seven days. This is the "long" cycle, which runs Thursday-to-Wednesday. But the same stores often have a second sales flier that comes out on Sundays and runs for four days. This is the "short" cycle, which runs Sunday-toWednesday. Now, look at a calendar and pay attention to the days. There are four days each week when both cycles and sales fliers overlap: Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. If your store participates in two sales cycles, these are the By Jill Cataldo days you want to shop in order to maximize your savings. By shopping Monday through Wednesday, you gain the advantage of two concurrent sales rather than just one. Why do stores do this? Look at the remaining three days in the week: Thursday, Friday and Saturday. These are busy days for a grocery store. Statistically speaking, they're also the days people are most likely to shop without much forethought. The weekend is approaching, the workweek is almost done and people head to the store. By contrast, when Sunday rolls around and the new week arrives, store traffic drops off. The store issues more sales and more deals on those days in order to drive traffic back into the store. These are the days we want to shop! People often ask me how many times I'm at the grocery store during the week (I can't imagine why, but many peo-

Silver Bay Assn. a valued ally To the Times of Ti: It’s that time of year again when the StreetCorner Gourmets Adirondack division gears up to prepare for feeding over 2,000 people in New York City. The Silver Bay Association been such a major facilitator of this ability to continue over the years. From our humble efforts 19 years ago making homemade cards with my six children to incorporating so many volunteers from our local community to make 500 pounds of mashed potatoes or 350 pounds of “Mary’s Heavenly Sweets” to 1,500 turkey sausage pizzettes, to 4,000 stuffing balls. Silver Bay has helped us to make a difference in thousands of people’s lives. In this I not only mean those we share a meal with in Harlem each year but also in the individuals who have faithfully or for the first time come to give their time and abilities at Silver Bay bringing joy, esteem and value into so many lives. We are entering a new phase of outreach this year. The meal will continue in Harlem on the street with hundreds of volunteers cooking all over the tri-state region to bring a “feast fit for kings to those we may not even know.” Four of my grown children, two married in children and two grandchildren will head down to assist my sister Mary in her efforts. Joined by many of my nieces and nephews as well as Mary’s friends and business constituents they will continue this tradition. I, however, will be joined by my sons Kris and Ken (former emp at Silver Bay) with his wife Tracy and three little ones to continue a meal in our area. The Hot Biscuit Diner for many years has been delivering a meal to individuals in our local communities as well as providing for an in house meal at the diner. They have entrusted the meal to me. It has been an amazing time seeing God put this all together for us. We are a branch of the StreetCorner Gourmets providing the Adirondack Dinner Table on Thanksgiving at the Ticonderoga hire house. The menu is planned and will continue to be “a feast fit for kings” but this time it will be given away

to many we know and some we will get to know for the first time. Our hopes are that this will be a family connection for many. We will have a full buffet and lovely table settings for inhouse dining and deliveries to any of the outlying towns as has been done in previous years from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. We will also have a kid’s corner for the youngin’s and “young at heart” filled with activities and fun. In the future we plan on incorporating a football afternoon with snacks and a large screen viewing area for families, as well as crafts and games, and a “leftover meal” in the evening. TV crew investigates fort Ghost Hunters visits Ti landmark TICONDEROGA — Fort Ticonderoga was recently visited by The Atlantic Paranormal Society (TAPS) who investigated the museum’s long history of ghost stories for the Syfy channel series Ghost Hunters. In the series the paranormal investigators from TAPS visit sites with stories of paranormal phenomenon to learn about the site’s history and investigate the alleged unexplained activity. Their approach is to experience the activity first-hand and, whenever possible, collect hard evidence related to the claims. After an investigation, personal experiences and data are reviewed with the aim of first seeking natural or logical explanations for alleged phenomena. Only when such an explanation can
not be determined are alternate explanations in the paranormal realm suggested. However, according to TAPS founder Jason Hawes, paranormal simply means above normal and that it does not necessarily mean that a place is haunted if a rational explanation for an unusual occurrence can not be determined. Fort Ticonderoga’s stories of unusual phenomena and unexplained occurrences have been reported for decades, but only in recent years has staff systematically collected and documented these stories. After more than a week of work the TAPS and production crews finished the investigation and filming of the fort and grounds on Nov. 17. The TAPS and production crew alike were a great group of people to work with, fort officials said. “We were very pleased to welcome

them to Fort Ticonderoga and I was extremely impressed by the professional approach to their work and sensitivity to the site’s history, museum and grounds” said Fort Ticonderoga’s Curator of Collections Christopher D. Fox. “The work was exhausting for everyone and we can not comment on the results of the investigation prior to the program airing in 2010.” According to Jim Dugan, supervising producer for Ghost Hunters, “Fort Ticonderoga is a stunning location and it is going to be a great show.” The Fort Ticonderoga episode of Ghost Hunters will air early in the show’s sixth season scheduled to begin next February. The fort opens for its 2010 season on May 20 and the King’s Garden will begin its season June 1. For additional information on upcoming programs and events see the website www.FortTiconderoga.org.

Tax levy up 2.5 percent
Ticonderoga adopts 2010 spending plan By Fred Herbst fred@denpubs.com TICONDEROGA — Taxes will increase 2.5 percent in Ticonderoga next year. The town board has adopted a 2010 budget that calls for increased spending and taxes. The 2010 budget totals $4,948,913. That’s a 2 percent increase from the current spending plan of $4,854,196. The amount to be raised by Bob Dedrick taxes in the 2010 budget is $3,872,093. That’s a 2.5 percent hike from the present tax levy of $3,778,245. In the Ticonderoga fire district the tax rate in 2010 will be $9.56 per $1,000 of assessed value. That’s an increase from the current tax rate of $9.38. In the Chilson fire district the 2010 tax rate will be $10.14, up from the current tax rate of $9.89. Sewer rates in the town will remain $420
a year in 2010, but the water rate will increase from $322 to $328. “I think it’s a good budget,” Supervisor Bob Dedrick said. “We worked very hard to limit spending.” Helping keep taxes down in 2010 is $160,000 in sales tax revenue coming to the town from the county. It was Dedrick who championed the .25 percent sales tax reimbursement to towns. This is the first year it is in effect. “That’s a huge help,” Dedrick said. The 2010 budget includes 3 percent pay raises for elected officials, 4 percent pay hikes for water and sewer workers and pay raises for highway employees ranging from 1.8-3.8 percent. The budget also includes reinstatement of the summer youth recreation program, which was wasn’t held in 2009 because of construction at Ti Middle School, host site of the program. There is a major change in the program, though. The Ti town board has agreed the $75,000 program is too expensive for local taxpayers and should be funded by those who use it. “We will charge tuition for the program,” Dedrick said. “The tuition will be based on the school’s free and reduced lunch formula.” Families who qualify for free lunches at Ticonderoga Central School will not be charged for the five-week program.
Families who qualify for reduced lunches at school will be charged $12.50 per child per week to attend the summer program. Families who do not qualify for the free or reduced lunch program will be charged $25 per child per week to attend. Complicating the budget was the loss of $75,000 in mortgage tax, the result of fewer home sales in the town in 2009. Dedrick said all town departments made

cuts for 2010 as officials worked to keep taxes down. “People have to understand that we have a lot of fine services in Ti,” Dedrick said. “In making this budget we (town trustees) tried to balance the needs of taxpayers with our quality of life. I think we did a good job.” Dedrick credited Amy Quesnel, his clerk, with her work in the budget process.

Volunteers needed for holiday drive By Fred Herbst fred@denpubs.com TICONDEROGA — The Salvation Army is seeking volunteer bell ringers for its Red Kettle campaign in Ticonderoga. The Red Kettles have become a tradition throughout the United States, raising money to assist the less fortunate. Glen Buell is the site coordinator for the Ticonderoga Service Unit. He’s looking for volunteers to stand by the kettles on Friday, Saturday and Sunday from Thanksgiving through Christmas Eve. Companies, organizations, schools and individuals can sign up as volunteers. “I would like to schedule Bell Ringers in 1-2 hour time slots from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day,” Buell said. “Have you ever asked yourself what can I do to help someone this holiday season?” Buell asked. “Have you been searching for something to get you into the Christmas spirit? Have you ever wanted to be one of those bell ringers for the Salvation Army? Why not get involved this year.” People interested in volunteering can call Buell at 597-3222. Anyone who needs assistance can call that same number. “If you have a friendly face, you don’t mind being out in the cold for an hour or two, and you would like to do something to benefit your community this holiday season then consider becoming a volunteer bell ringer for the Salvation Army,” Buell said.
Heritage Commons recently held a “Collector’s Exhibit.” Norman Mjaatvedt was a participant. He displayed his “whittled creations.”

“Part of my family is continuing to support the effort in Harlem — Kyle Joelle Kevin and Jessica,” Stonitsch explained. “Ken and his family and Kris will assist me here along with volunteers from the previous Hot Biscuit meal and many from the community that are signing on this year. “Val and Craig are doing all the ordering and we have planned the menu together,” she continued. “We will do the cooking, serving and delivery for this year.” People who can’t get to the fire house for dinner can call 585-6369 for a ride or for a meal delivery. “We are planning to serve 200 delivered and in-house meals,” Stonitsch said. “Thanksgiving is a family day to thank God for all the blessings of our lives. We can be family to those who are in need of that for whatever reason. It should be a lot of fun.” Stonitsch praised the Dixons. “In years past Val and Craig Dixon, along with their family and friends, have brought the delights of a full holiday meal to hundreds of people in the diner or delivered to people’s homes,” she said. “They will continue to have a large part in the meal provided and we will provide the umpf — the hands and feet — cooking, serving, delivering and keeping in touch with people throughout the year. “Val and Craig have done the most difficult part , beginning,” Stonitsch said. “We will do the next part, continuing. We hope to bring belonging back one person at a time helping to restore the broken places in many lives. People from the community are welcome to help us make this happen.” People interested in assisting with the Thanksgiving meal can call Stonitsch at 585-6369.

SATURDAY November 21, 2009
Crown Point church to host 1700s service CROWN POINT — For many, Thanksgiving is holiday that begins a series of celebrations observed by many communities of faith. To kick off the season, the First Congregational Church in Crown Point will host a 1700-style New England service Sunday, Nov. 22, at 9:30 a.m. “With families coming together, with tables full of specially prepared foods, and the sharing of family stories and memories, the day we observe as Thanksgiving would seem full and complete,” Pastor David Hirtle said. “Those who gather at the historic First Congregational Church here in Crown Point will walk back into history to understand the what their church forefathers experienced in the early 1700s on a small,
wind-swept place referred to as the Plymouth Colony. Hirtle has put together a somewhat authentic service that came from the church records of First Congregational Church of New Bedford, Mass. That church, organized in 1696, had as a part of its membership a number of the Plymouth Colony families. “Those who sailed from England to the untamed shores of what is now Provincetown and Plymouth, Mass., were, as we commonly refer to today, Pilgrims and Separatists,” Hirtle said. “They left their homes and sailed together in hopes of finding a place where they could worship freely. “The service will walk the participants through the importance of community,” he continued. “It will note the harshness of the year just
past and the acknowledgement that their survival was dependent not only upon their immediate community but also the blessings realized from the natives who showed them how to survive.” The ancient bell of the Brick Church in the Park will peel as it has for more than 200 years, calling the community to worship. The songs that will be sung will speak of the blessings experienced and looked for. “Many of our common day traditions will be explained,” Hirtle said. “It will be an opportunity to give thanks with a grateful heart as a community comes together becoming something greater then themselves. “All are invited to step back and, with their community, give thanks,” he concluded.
Thrift shop to close for winter CROWN POINT — Second Blessings Thrift Shop will be closed on Thanksgiving as well as the Saturday following the holiday to allow volunteers to share time with their families. The following week, the shop, located in the Hammond Chapel, Route 9N and Creek Road in Crown Point, will be open on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday (December 1, 3 and 5) 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. as usual. “This will, however, be our final week for the season due to heating and water considerations,” said Pastor David Hirtle of the Crown Point First Congregational Church. “We continue to have many fine winter coats as well as Christmas decorations and gift ideas.” Second Blessings is a Ministry to the community of First Congregational Church, Crown Point. Second Blessings is staffed by volunteers. Second Blessings is a donation-only thrift shop. If the client cannot afford a donation, the item still goes with them. “The staff of Second Blessings is grateful to our many friends for their help in making this a year of many blessings,” Hirtle said. If there is an urgent need, call 597-3398. “We will make arrangements to help you,” Hirtle said.

Local residents made the trip to Albany to voice their concerns about the closure of the Lake Champlain Bridge. The group then formed a coalition to keep the issue before state officials.
Lake Champlain Bridge
Main St., Fair Haven, VT • 802-265-3313
Coalition forms to lobby state By Fred Herbst fred@denpubs.com CROWN POINT — Local residents upset with the closure of the Lake Champlain Bridge have formally united. The Lake Champlain Bridge Coalition has been formed to relay the concerns of those affected to state leaders. “Our goals are to quickly get a new ferry in at the present day bridge site, quickly get a new bridge at the present day bridge site and restore traffic to that corridor,” explained Barb Brassard, a coalition member and executive director of the Ticonderoga Area Chamber of Commerce. “Without the Lake Champlain/Crown Point Bridge and normal traffic patterns, local businesses found an immediate decrease in business,” Brassard said. “Their losses range from 30 to 90 percent. This is a huge impact to our struggling businesses that may not survive. “This is the short term impact,” she added. “The long term impact would surface next summer when the tourists normally arrive. Without the bridge to channel visitors here we could be facing an even more devastating impact and more businesses closing. Jobs will be lost and storefronts will close. This is a hit that our region cannot afford and could be the death of our area as we knew it.” Karen Hennessey of Crown Point is the coalition leader. The group formed during a return trip from Albany Nov. 10 where residents took their concerns to the state capital. About 20 local people made the trip. They were joined by state Sen. Betty Little, Assemblywoman Teresa Sayward, local officials and community members from Saratoga County to rally support for investments in bridge and roadway projects. The lawmakers said there are 110 New York State bridges with a safety rating the same or worse than the bridge in Crown Point now deemed too dangerous for traffic, according to a New York State Department of Transportation
bridge safety report. “The North Country communities I represent are reeling because of the bridge closure,” said Little. “Thank goodness no one was killed as a result of the bridge failing. But the closure has resulted in a state of emergency having to be declared and costly steps being taken to mitigate the financial impact on families and businesses. This is much more than an inconvenience, it is a real hardship. The question many of us are wondering is where is the next Crown Point Bridge?” Sayward agreed the Lake Champlain Bridge closure is more than an inconvenience. “The closure of this bridge has affected many lives,” she said. “People are struggling to get back and forth from work, creating long, stressful days. Farmers need to tend to their animals; people require medical services. Residents have been inconvenienced long enough, with inclement weather coming upon us we must act now. We are looking to the governor to find funds so we can resolve this sooner than later.” The Saratoga County residents expressed worry about the Batchellerville Bridge. State Sen. Hugh T. Farley said, “The time to address this (Batchellerville) situation is now, rather than having to react to the traumatic impact of a closure, like in the Crown Point situation. Both of these bridges are indicative of the broader problems that need to be addressed throughout the State.” A DOT report issued this past May listed hundreds of bridges in need of attention. The Crown Point Bridge, also known as the Lake Champlain Bridge, had a safety rating of 3.38. More than 100 bridges received a lower score in that report. The Batchellerville Bridge, built in 1930 and last inspected by DOT in August 2008, has a safety rating of 3.35 out of 7.00. The 3,000-foot span has been reduced to one-way traffic.
Crown Point From page 1 Restaurant and the faith communities of Sacred Heart, Crown Point United Methodist and the First Congregational Churches. “We are grateful to Crown Point Telephone, Crown Point Discount, Crown Point Citgo, Champlain National Bank as well as many involved members of the Crown Point area who are also joining us to make this a true community time of fellowship,” Hirtle said. Where possible, the meal will be served with locally grown and prepared items. Gunnison’s have donated the apples for the pies. These apple pies are being made by the management and staff of Frenchman’s Restaurant. Pumpkin pies will be made at Maple Ridge Restaurant. Locally-grown potatoes are being
Pastor David Hirtle donated by the women at the Crown Point Post Office; the 60 pounds of potatoes will be peeled and readied by employees of CPTELCO. Members of the United Methodist Church are making enough stuffing to ensure that no one goes away hungry. Locally-grown
squash will be provided by the Bodette Farms. Homemade rolls are being made by employees of Crown Point Telephone and Technology and Maple Ridge, and the Congregational Church. Crown Point Citgo is supplying juice and milk for the children. The five turkeys have again been donated by Sacred Heart Church and cooked in the two restaurants’ ovens. Condiments will be provided by Crown Point Discount Store. Funds for “extras” have come from Champlain Bank as well as several anonymous sources. The Knapp Senior Center will also serve a traditional meal from its kitchen on that day for seniors beginning at 5 p.m. “This is a total community effort that will ensure fellowship and a traditional hot meal for those who might not have one otherwise here in Crown Point,” Hirtle said.

Sherman Free Library Endowment Fund established and children. The Sherman Free Library opened on Jan. 17, 1887. George Riley Sherman, partner in the Witherbee & Sherman Mining Company, provided $7,700 to build the library and stock it with 3,000 volumes. He stipulated that the library would be free to every person residing within the village limits. Today, the library
serves the entire town of Moriah and its visitors. Bill Bryant, president of the library board of directors, said “Through this partnership with ACT we will assure the long term viability of George Sherman’s endowment. ACT will be able to assist donors in establishing gift giving plans for the library.” Sherman gave an endow-
ment of $10,000 to be used to maintain the library. In 1901 the library received a further endowment of $10,000 from the will of Jane H. Sherman. The library is currently supported by the Sherman Trust, the town of Moriah, the village of Port Henry, the Clinton-Essex-Franklin Library System and donations from the local community.

Witherbee From page 1 Dennis said. “I kept in touch until 1955.” Then... Fred Raymon of Ticonderoga met Dennis about a year ago while making a delivery to his home. Dennis had a New Zealand pennant in his home, which sparked Raymon’s curiosity since Raymon had visited the country. In fact, Raymon has a friend living in Ellerslie. “I asked him about the pennant,” Raymon said. “He told me about his war time experiences and the box. I was fascinated.” Raymon, who has developed a bond with Dennis, soon contacted his friend in New Zealand, Allan Collinson, asking if he knew the Durbridge family. Collinson did not, but a quick look in the local phone book found Paul Durbridge — the son of the late Olive. Paul Durbridge knew the story of
® ®
Ray Dennis in World War II Dennis and his mother. He even had the jewelry box. “He (Dennis) was elated to receive word that his gift of the jewelry box has endured the years and remained in the Durbridge family,” Raymon said. “Now Olive’s son has the box. This has brought untold joy to Ray, who has so
many wonderful memories of his stay in New Zealand during the war.” Durbridge has since written Dennis. “I was delighted and surprised when contacted by Allan Collinson,” Durbridge wrote. “After all the years I now know who made the box, which of course I still have and have kept in pristine condition. “My mother, who is now deceased together with all her sisters, often spoke of the American servicemen they knew during the war and wondered what became of them,” he continued. “The odds of contacting the very one who carved the box are amazing. “We are a generation that can appreciate what the Americans did in the Pacific Theatre and the influence you had here,” Durbridge concluded. Dennis and Durbridge have exchanged letters and photos, including one of the jewelry box. “The people I met in New Zealand were very nice to me and other U.S. soldiers,” Dennis recalled. “May God bless them for being so nice.”

Schroon tax rate to drop; few changes in ‘10 budget Spending plan totals $4.2 million by Gretchen Porier gretchen@denpubs.com
Mountainside Christian Academy's pre-K and kindergarten class recently enjoyed a visit from some of the animals at Hayfield.s Farm.
Nobody Does It Better!
SCHROON LAKE — The town of Schroon has adopted a maintenance budget, with some minor changes, for 2010. The town board passed a preliminary $4,284,507 budget for 2010. This is a $119,834 increase from 2009 or a 2.8 percent increase. The total amount to be raised by taxes is $2,006,725, which is a difference of $76,786 from 2009. That’s down 3.8 percent. Supervisor Cathy Moses noted the general fund tax rate went from $1.32 per
$1,000 of assessed value to $l.14, a 15.8 percent decrease. Schroon Lake sewer and water rates will remain the same. The Phase II sewer project is being paid for with grant money, thus having little impact on tax payers. The major budget increases in 2010 are from employee benefits such as insurance and a 2.9 percent raise for all
employees, including elected officials. The increase in budget will be offset by the $90,000 sales tax revenue expected for 2010. Starting in 2010 towns will get .25 percent of the county sales tax. The town of Schroon has a 5 percent growth in assessments. The town tax base went from $640 million in 2009 to $677 million in 2010.

Foodborne illness: How to keep from getting sick What is a Foodborne Illness? Foodborne illness is the sickness that results from eating foods that are contaminated with harmful bacteria and other microorganisms. Although you may not see, smell or taste these “bugs”, under the right conditions, they may be present on the foods when they are purchased or get into food during preparation, cooking, serving or storage. Common symptoms of foodborne illness include diarrhea, abdominal cramps, fever, headache and vomiting. These symptoms may come on as early as a half hour after eating contaminated food or may not develop for up to two weeks. They usually last only a day or two, but in some cases can persist a week or more. For most healthy people, foodborne illnesses are neither long-lasting nor life-threatening. However, the consequences can be severe and may require hospitalization and even lead to death in the very young, the very old and those with weakened immune systems. Because bacteria can survive on raw foods despite aggressive controls at the processing and retail levels, food safety experts urge consumers to think about food safety at each step in the food handling process - from shopping or bringing takeout foods home to storing leftovers. This means consumers should always follow these four simple steps: * CLEAN - Wash hands, utensils and surfaces with hot soapy water before and after food preparation, and especially after preparing meat, poultry, eggs or seafood to protect adequately against bacteria. Using a disinfectant cleaner or a mixture of bleach and water on surfaces and antibacterial soap on hands can provide some added protection. * SEPARATE - Keep raw meat, poultry, eggs, seafood and their juices away from ready-to-eat foods; never place cooked food on an unwashed plate that previously held raw meat, poultry, eggs or seafood. * COOK - Cook food t the proper internal temperatures (This varies for different cuts and types of meat and poultry) and check for doneness with a food thermometer. Cook eggs until both the yolk and white are firm. *CHILL - Refrigerate or freeze perishables, prepared food and leftovers within two hours and make sure the refrigerator is set at no higher than 40 degrees F and that the freezer unit is set at 0 degree F.
Taking care of the caregiver Has your caregiving left you feeling depression, anger, or guilt? Has your health deteriorated since taking on the responsibility of caregiving? If so, you may be suffering from what is referred to as “caregiver syndrome, “ a debilitating condition brought on by unrelieved, constant caring for a person with a chronic illness or dementia. The physical symptoms are a result of a prolonged and elevated level of stress hormones circulating in the body. Exhausted caregivers’ stress hormone levels are similar to those suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.

Moriah advances to state semifinals Vikings eye return trip to state final Moriah reached the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class D semifinal in football action Nov. 13. The Vikings, who
reached the state championship game last season, beat Rensselaer, 28-25, in Ticonderoga. The contest was not as close as the score would indicate. Moriah led 28-12 before two late, meaningless Rensselaer scores. Moriah, the Section VIIX champion, faced Eldred of Section IX in the semifinal round in Kingston Nov. 20. The winner

Cross country
Sentinels compete at states Ticonderoga runners ended their cross country season at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association championships Nov. 14 at SUNY-Plattsburgh. Josh Cook led Sentinel harriers, finishing 49th in the boys Class D race in 17 minutes, 40.9 seconds. Jay Berube was 58th for Ti in 18:02.9. Mike Champagne of Seton Catholic won the Class D title in 15:54. He also won in 2008. Katie Karkoski led Ticonderoga in the girls Class D race, finishing 55th in 21:27.2. Jordana Green of Ti was 88th in 23:30.4. Markie teRiele, Tabitha Taylor and Becky Barber also represented the Sentinels. Katie Weisenburger of Pulaski won the race in 18:27.1.
moves on to the state championship game. Rensselaer looked like a winner on the game’s first play from scrimmage as Jashem Hamilton broke free for a 65-yard TD run. That’s turned out to be its only real highlight. Nate Gilbo hit Tom Tesar with a 32-yard touchdown pass on the first play of the second quarter as the Vikings took a 7-6 lead on Ryan Mascarenas’ extra point. Ron Schofield, who had a huge day for Moriah, scored on runs of a yard and 10 yards as the Vikings opened up a 21-6 advantage. After Rensselaer scored, Schofield iced the contest for Moriah with a 5-yard TD run early in the final quarter. Schofield finished the game with 218 yards rushing and three TDs. The entire Rensselaer managed just 115 yards rushing. Now 9-2 on the season, the Vikings are close to duplicating their 2008 success. Last season Moriah had the best season in school history, going undefeated until losing the state championship game. The Vikings were 12-1, setting records galore and exciting an entire community. The Vikings return 13 players from that team, including seven starters on offense and six on defense. Much of that experience is up front, where Moriah returns its entire starting offensive line. Th group — Hayden Whalen, Dylan Orr, John Petro,d Sergio Camacho, Wally Edward, Jud Zelinski, TJ Brassard and Josh Clarke — has paved the way this fall.

Marathon
Crown Point teacher runs for FES CROWN POINT — A Crown Point teacher recently completed the Marine Corps Marathon to raise money for the College For Every Student program at her school. Elaine Dixon finished the 26-mile, 385-yard run in Washington, D.C., in 5 hours, 30 minutes, 18 seconds. She trained for the race at 4:30 a.m. before her day as a teacher, mentor and student. She is taking courses towards her certification of advanced study, hoping to become a school principal. Why did she add marathon training to her already jam-packed schedule? Dixon, who has run several half marathons, sought sponsorship for her marathon. She raised $1,500 for the CFES program at Crown Point. Ten years ago, Crown Point was on the state “Schools in Need of Improvement” list because of its subpar student test scores and low graduation rates. Today the school is a model school in the America’s Choice program, which helps public schools improve their performance. CFES works to help under-served students get to college and be successful there by providing college-student mentors and arranging college visit trips. The program also offers a host of services and resources to students who would not otherwise have them. “It’s a program I wish I had access to as a student,” said Dixon, who is the youngest of six siblings, all who put themselves through college by working or joining the military. “The impact it has on the kids at my school is tremendous.” Dixon has also made an impact — through learning about her marathon training her students became fascinated and over 100 of them came to her classroom to personally wish her luck the day before she left for Washington. The race was the culmination of a series of gratifying events for Dixon. Sitting at a post-race dinner hosted by CFES, Dixon laughed at the craziness of her hectic marathon training schedule, but her voice began to waver when she spoke about the donors that helped her raise $1,500. One of her biggest donations, $100, came from her cousins, one a fellow teacher and the other an avid marathoner. Another large donation came from a janitor at her school in Crown Point. A week before she came to Washington the school superintendent asked:
Elaine Dixon, left, a Crown Point Central School teacher is congratulated by Crystal Farrell, another Crown Point teacher, after finishing the Marine Corps Marathon. Dixon raised $1,500 by running the race for local students. “How much more do you need to reach your goal?” The board of education gave the rest of the money. But it was the $5 a teacher ’s aide gave to Dixon’s cause that meant the most. “That was probably her extra spending money for the week,” said Dixon. “This race was great, but it was during my last 20-mile training run that I was thinking about all the people who helped me out, $5 at a time, and I had this wonderful epiphany: People are good.”

Man battles for his life with monster buck
G
erald Dabiew Jr. said he feels lucky to be alive after a near 20-minute battle with a 10-point buck last Friday during which he was repeatedly slammed to the ground by the powerful animal. “I have never been so scared in all my life,” the 56-yearold said about the harrowing ordeal that transpired near his remote home in Moira — a small community at the northern tip of the Adirondack Park outside Malone. “I’ve never seen anything like this in my life,” Dabiew said in a low voice, then added “... and I never want to see it again.” Dabiew said the story unfolded as he was collecting firewood along a log road behind his home. It was early afternoon and clear skies made the job more bearable as he tossed small chunks of wood into the bucket of a skid steer he owns. A lifelong native of Moira, Dabiew said he paid little attention when a large buck crossed the road in front of him. After all, he’d seen plenty of deer in the woods near his home, but the sequence of events that was about to play out was something Dabiew had never seen, or heard of be-

fore. “They don’t usually walk right up to you, but this deer was coming right at me,” he recalled. At 30 feet, the buck lowered his antlers and charged. Knocked to the ground and fighting for his life, all Dabiew could think was he had to defend himself or the deer was going to kill him. “So I fought with it. I wrapped my legs around its neck and locked my arms and hands in its horns and squeezed for all I was worth as it pounded me into the ground,” he said. Minutes seemed like hours as the huge buck continuously picked Dabiew’s 230-pound frame up atop its head and slammed him to the ground, driving him into rocks and stumps. Exhausted, Dabiew said it was all he could do to hold on, but he was sure the deer would gore him if he let go and adrenaline kept him battling on. Luckily, Dabiew said he wasn’t the only one getting tired. “He was tired himself, slowing down and breathing

heavy,” Dabiew said. “He couldn’t move his head without moving me with it.” Eventually, however, Dabiew could hold on no longer, and his grip on the antlers slipped. As he fell backward, he kicked at the deer, causing it to rear up and rake the side of his face with its hooves. Then, Dabiew saw his opening. “After that, he walked a few feet away, stopped and just stood there looking back at me. That gave me time to pull myself into the skid steer. I wasn’t about to stick around for anymore,” he said. Bruised, bloodied and covered in mud, Dabiew used his cell phone to call for help. X-Rays showed no broken bones, but Dabiew was left with cuts and bruises all over his body as well as a gored right hand. “I’m black and blue from head to toe,” he said. A longtime corrections officer at Upstate Correctional, Dabiew said he doesn’t scare easy. “But I knew this thing was trying to kill me,” he said. “That is a feeling you never forget.” Dabiew said he cannot speculate what might of provoked the buck. He said a friend suggested the sound of the wood hitting the inside of the skid steer ’s bucket might have sounded like antlers rattling together. The sound of two bucks fighting often makes a dominant buck aggressive — especially during breeding season, which happens in November in the Adirondacks. While Dabiew said he has never hunted, he said he’ll think twice before going back in the woods unarmed — especially during breeding season. “Who would think that the thing would do something like that,” he said. “That deer was pissed.”
