Ti PD may move Structural woes at present office could force action By Fred Herbst fred@denpubs.com TICONDEROGA — The Ticonderoga Police Department may be forced to leave its Burgoyne Road building. The concrete block structure has developed a large crack from the foundation up the center of the back wall, Supervisor Bob Dedrick said. “We’ve got to get engineers to look at it and decide if it can be saved,” Dedrick said of the building. The Ti town board is now considering alternative, short-term locations for the police department. Dedrick said the police could move to the first floor of the former armory on Champlain Avenue or the basement of the Community Building. The problem with the existing police office building may prove to be an opportunity, Dedrick noted. Ticonderoga officials have long discussed having the police department

Zoning proposal targets Lake George properties TICONDEROGA — Proposed changes to Ticonderoga’s zoning law will clarify land-use issues around Lake George and improve consistency between the town’s law and state law. That’s the assessment of local officials who are considering revisions to the Ti zoning ordinance.
“The revisions are needed to bring the law into conformance with the Town Comprehensive Plan passed by the Ticonderoga Town Council in 2006,” said Brandy Saxton, a consultant assisting with the project. Three shoreline zoning districts are being considered. One for lots with

Fort Ticonderoga gets History Day support TICONDEROGA — Wal-Mart, through its Ticonderoga Supercenter, and Champlain National Bank recently committed to support North Country History Day, a program for students in grades 6-12 in Clinton, Essex, Franklin, and Warren counties. The gifts will be used to fund the North Country History Day contest to be held on Saturday, March 13, in the Deborah Clarke Mars Education Center at Fort Ticonderoga. Wal-Mart gave $1,000 and Champlain National Bank gave $500. Fort Ticonderoga Director of Interpretation & Education Rich Strum serves as the North Country Regional Coordinator for New York State History Day. National History Day, a year-long educational program sponsored in New York State by the New York State Historical Association, encourages students to explore local, state, national, and world history. After selecting a historical topic that relates to an annual theme, students conduct extensive research by using libraries, archives, museums, and oral history interviews. They analyze and interpret their findings, draw conclusions about their topics' significance in history, and create final projects that present their work. These proj-

ects can be entered into a series of competitions, from the local to the national level, where they are evaluated by professional historians and educators. Fort Ticonderoga hosts nearly 2,000 school age children a year. Most take part in the “America’s First Victory’ program which re-enacts the capture of the fort by Ethan Allen, Benedict Arnold and the Green Mountain Boys. “Participation in National History Day can transform the way history is taught and learned, helping teachers meet standards and involving students in challenging contests that teach the critical skills they need to be effective citizens in the 21st Century,” said Marci hall, Fort Ti spokeswoman. North Country teachers interested in learning about how to become involved in this national program should contact Strum at rstrum@fort-ticonderoga.org or at 5856370. Fort Ticonderoga opens for its 101st season on May 20 and the King’s Garden will open June 1. For a complete schedule of 2010 events go to www.FortTiconderoga.org. Bridge proposals presented to public Demolition planned for now-closed span By Fred Herbst fred@denpubs.com TICONDEROGA — Plans to demolish the existing Lake Champlain Bridge and construct a new span have been presented to the public. The state Department of Transportation and Vermont Agency of Transportation held a series of meetings in Ticonderoga Dec. 12 to update area residents on the bridge, which was closed Oct. 16 because of safety concerns, and efforts to replace it. The existing bridge will be torn down and a new bridge will be built at the same location in Crown Point. NYSDOT contractor Harrison & Burrowes Bridge Constructors, Inc. has secured a subcontractor to demolish the existing bridge. Advanced Explosives Demolition, Inc. of Idaho will, working for H&B, plan for and
A a steel composite cable-stayed bridge is one of six options for replacing the Lake Champlain Bridge in Crown Point. execute the controlled explosive demolition of the steel truss bridge. Officials said details on the bridge demolition will be well advertised and safe public viewing locations will be determined. The public will be prohibited from the area immediately surrounding the bridge, including the land, water and air. Access to certain roads also will be restricted to ensure public safety.
During the presentations Dec. 12, DOT reviewed the design criteria for the new bridge and the feasible bridge types available for consideration. People were asked for input regarding features that should be included in the design, such as sidewalks, bicycle lanes, lighting and materials used, as well as the style of the new bridge. Stating that the goal is to move as quickly as possible to design a new bridge to replace the now closed one, officials of both NYSDOT and VTrans explained the pros and cons of the top five replacement alternatives which were on display. The five options include using a long-span steel girder bridge, a segmental concrete bridge, a steel composite cable-stayed bridge, a concrete extradosed bridge or a network tied arch bridge. Photos and a matrix analysis may be reviewed at https://www.nysdot.gov/lakechamplainbridge/alternatives. Options for commemorating the existing historic bridge were also presented and discussed. The meetings also addressed demolition
plans for the existing bridge, including when and how it is likely to occur. Artist renderings showing each of the alternatives are also available on NYSDOT’s website at www.nysdot.gov/lakechamplainbridge. NYSDOT officials also announced that high water has forced the termination of one of the three ferries serving Champlain Valley residents since the closure of the Champlain Bridge. The Westport-Basin Harbor, Vt., pedestrian ferry has shut down for the season. The state Department of Transportation and Vermont Agency of Transportation have been subsidizing ferry travel, and the EssexCharlotte, Vt., and Ticonderoga-Shoreham, Vt., ferries will continue to run. The independent Ticonderoga Ferry normally closes at the end of October, but its owners agreed to stay open as long as possible while a temporary 24-hour ferry is set up next to the Champlain Bridge. That free ferry will open by the end of the year, according to the office of Gov. David Paterson.

He also thinks that a lateral move to another geographic area, perhaps city police work, might be for him.

SATURDAY December 19, 2009
Christmas events a success in Ti Miracles happen To the Times of Ti: Nov. 30 and Dec. 5 were again memorable days in the town of Ticonderoga. On, Dec. 5 I witnessed over 100 children and their relatives enjoy a fun-filled series of hands-on activities in the Community Building. The children were greeted in the foyer by Santa Claus who handed out candy canes to all the youngsters, each able to take a picture with Santa. Upstairs in the LaChute Hall kids were treated to a variety of activities from making treat bags to making Christmas tree decorations. One had to be present to witness the smiles and excitement generated by these youngsters. This entire event was planned by the Ticonderoga Area Chamber of Commerce. Special thanks to Barb Brassard and Joann Geisel who spearheaded this endeavor and the entire board of directors. Many people volunteered to make this event so successful. At 4:30 p.m. the lighting of the town Christmas tree on the lawn of the Community Building took place. The tree was decorated by A.T. Morette, Eric Dedrick, Terry Smith, Ray Thatcher and I. Also, a thank you to the highway department for hanging the Christmas wreaths and a special thanks to Stephanie Towne and her committed group for once again decorating the Bicentennial Park and the gazebo. On Nov. 30 the Holiday Train made its annual stop at the railroad station at 4:45 p.m. Over 300 people witnessed the arrival of the train, and were entertained for nearly a half-hour by a group of extremely talented, world renowned, musicians and singers. During several songs the crowd was encouraged to participate. It was exciting to see so many people vigorously accompanying the per-

formers. Santa Claus arrived on cue which further enhanced and uplifted the spirit of Christmas. A special thanks goes out to our local police department, under the direction of Chief Mark Johns, whose presence helped make this event go off without a single glitch. Thanks also to Jim O’Bryan and International Paper Co. for supplying the lights. These lights helped pedestrians walking along the road. Lighting up the roadway certainly helped prevent possible injuries. A big thank you to the Ticonderoga Central School and to Transportation Officer Mike Vigliotti and Superintendent John McDonald and the three capable drivers for providing buses for the transportation of passengers from the Fort Ticonderoga parking lot to the train station, to Kellie O’Neil-Teer and her staff for allowing cars to access the fort and use the parking lot as a staging area, Pat Morrison and the highway department and finally the regional office of the state Department of Transportation under the direction of Rick Gero. As you can see these events took a lot of planning, coordinating and support from organizations and volunteers. As supervisor I would like to personally thank each and every one of you who contributed to this event. The big winner was the local food pantry which collected an enormous amount of food as well as a $1,000 check from C.P. Rail. Margaret Beuerlein and her band of elves assisted in the collection. Thank you C.P. Rail for making this effort to support all the local food pantries. But the biggest winners were the kids, young and old, who took advantage of these special events. The chamber has identified these events as Santa Fest. It certainly was. Hopefully we have created a celebration that will last for years. That is my fervent wish. Robert C. iracles, large and small, happen every day. Whether you attribute them to divine intervention, luck or coincidence, there’s no denying people catch breaks all the time. Some people win the lottery, others find a parking place in front of the post office during the holiday season. The past year I’ve been dealing with an eye problem. Many trips to different doctors for a battery of tests failed to reveal a cause until an MRI in November. The MRI showed a growth — the doctor called it a tumor, but that word is just too scary to use — located behind my right eye. Things started to happen very quickly. Dr. Kate Lane, a surgeon in Burlington, explained a growth like mine could be very bad news, but there was only one way to know for certain. It had to be removed. Preparing for surgery is no fun. While doctors do their best to calm fears, they also point out all the worst-case scenarios. “It’s highly unlikely, but....” they tell you as they outline the dangers of anesthesia, surgery and recovery. Maybe the hardest part was completing the required living will. While practical and necessary, it was no fun to sit with my wife and decide on possible care if I were to slip into a coma and to make funeral arrangements. Complicating my surgery was the fact the growth was intertwined with blood vessels and nerves near the eye. I was reminded several times I could lose the eye; the cost of eliminating the growth. “You have two eyes, but only one life,” I was told more than once. The initial diagnosis was a shock, but as the surgery neared something strange happened. I became very calm and my eye, which had been a bloody mess for a year, suddenly looked much better. The day before the surgery Sister Sharon Dalton, principal at St. Mary’s School in Ticonderoga, stopped me before Mass. She told me there was no reason to worry; I was on the school’s prayer list the next day. Surgery took nearly four hours, more than twice as long as expected. The outcome was also unexpected — there was no growth found, although there was a mass of mangled blood vessels. Groggy from the anesthesia, I was given the good news. My wife claims my first words were, “Call Sister Sharon.” To be safe, Dr. Lane did remove the tissue and sent it for testing. The result was a capillary hemangioma, a benign self-involuting group of endothelial cells (the cells that line blood vessels). I don’t understand it either, but the bottom line is I have no cancer and am back as editor of the Times of Ti this week after nearly a month away. Both eyes are working. Family and friends have decided this is a Christmas miracle. Maybe. As people in Ti know, when Sister Sharon wants something it usually happens. Although I wouldn’t recommend this sort of thing for anyone, I certainly believe it was a positive experience. So many people stepped forward with prayers and encouragement, not to mention food and help around the house. Did you know Kathy Tubbs is a laundry wizard? It’s an amazing feeling to realize people truly care. Perhaps that’s the real miracle here. Merry Christmas! Fred Herbst is Times of Ti editor. He can be reached at fred@denpubs.com

OPINION • TIMES OF TI - 7
Case of the confused cashier...solved H
as this ever happened to you? You finish filling your cart with the week’s groceries, head to the checkout lane and place your items on the conveyor belt. The cashier announces the total and you hand over a nice stack of coupons. Then, the cashier pauses. You hear the words, “I don’t think we take coupons from the Internet.” The cashier hands them back By Jill Cataldo to you and you ponder what to do next. While most of my shopping trips run smoothly, occasionally even your Coupon Queen encounters a cashier issue or two. So what do we shoppers do? One of our biggest tools to deal with checkout problems is the store’s coupon policy. Most stores have a written policy that states exactly how they handle coupons presented in the checkout lane. Many stores post the policies on their Web sites and others have a copy at the customer service counter in the store itself. What’s in a coupon policy? Information that shoppers can use to better plan our shopping trips! Coupon policies state specifics such as, We accept Internet coupons, We accept expired coupons or We accept competitors’ coupons. Everything we need to know about what kinds of coupons our stores should accept is spelled out for us right in the store’s
Coupon Queen
policy. Armed with this knowledge, well-informed shoppers know exactly what coupons our stores should accept! The most commonly heard issue with cashiers does involve the store’s acceptance of printable Internet coupons. If you’re told that the store does not accept them, ask to see a copy of the store’s coupon policy. Most grocery stores and supermarkets do accept Internet coupons that are legitimately printed and are not photocopies. Unfortunately, due to the rise in coupon fraud, stores are getting more stringent about the kinds of Internet coupons that they will accept. Most legitimate Internet coupons contain a unique ID or barcode identifier and several other key features that stores use to ascertain a coupon’s validity. And any time the Coupon Information Corporation, a nonprofit organization that monitors coupon fraud, identifies a new, counterfeit coupon, it sends stores an alert to watch for coupons known to be fraudulent or counterfeit. However, when a fraud alert goes out, sometimes it has a ripple effect. Our stores learn a new counterfeit coupon has been spotted in circulation. Instead of homing in on the specific coupon mentioned in the alert, some cashiers may find it easier not to accept any Internet coupons. This not only hurts shoppers, it hurts stores, too, since the large number of Internet coupons are legitimate and perfectly fine for the store to accept. Marketers reimburse stores for the full value of every coupon shoppers redeem, whether the coupon ran in the newspaper, appeared in newspaper inserts, was found on a product package or was printed legitimately from the Internet. Would you like another piece of the cashier/coupon policy
puzzle? I’ve heard from many cashiers that they get very little training on their store’s coupon policy. This puts couponsavvy shoppers in an unusual situation. It’s possible that you may be more familiar with a store’s coupon policy than the cashier is. If you find yourself in this situation, never force the issue. Simply ask the cashier to check the store’s policy with the manager. You can politely let the cashier know that you’ve read it to make sure that all of the coupons you’re presenting are acceptable. A cashier issue most likely stems from a little confusion that isn’t the cashier’s fault at all. A cashier who questions your coupons may simply be trying to protect the store and do what they believe is right. We’ll continue to discuss commonly heard cashier coupon issues in the weeks ahead. © CTW Features Jill Cataldo, a coupon workshop instructor, writer and mother of three, never passes up a good deal. GOP backs Democrat
Moriah supervisor out of county chair race By Fred Herbst fred@denpubs.com PORT HENRY — Just how fractured is the Essex County Republican Party? The GOP has rallied to endorse a Democrat as the next chairman of the Essex County Board of Supervisors. Republican Tom Scozzafava, Moriah supervisor, announced Dec. 10 he has withdrawn his bid to become county board chairman. That leaves Democrat Randy Douglas of Jay as the lone remaining candidate for the post. “I decided to drop from the race for the sake of unity on the board,” Scozzafava said. “It’s time we move forward.” Scozzafava claimed to have the support of nine supervisors for the chairmanship. Douglas also had nine votes on the 18-member board. In the event of a tie, the deciding ballot would have been cast by the county clerk, Joe Provoncha. Although Republicans still hold a 2-1 edge in voter registration in Essex County, GOP fortunes have been in decline. Local voters supported Kristin Gillibrand and Bill Owens, both Democrats, in the most recent congressional races. They favored Barrack Obama over John McCain for presi-
dent in 2008. This past fall two incumbent GOP supervisors were upset. At the January 2010 organizational meeting Douglas will become the first Democrat county board chairman in memory. The term of current board Chairwoman Cathy Moses expires Jan. 1, and the board will convene to elect a new leader at the annual organizational meeting on Jan. 4. Scozzafava acknowledged he did not have the support of his own party. He was a supporter of Julie Garcia last fall, who was denied the GOP nomination for reelection as county district attorney. Garcia eventually lost a close race to GOP candidate Kristy Sprague. “The party is definitely divided after the DA race,” Scozzafava said. “But we need to heal the party or die as individuals.”
Republican St. Armand Supervisor Joyce Morency acknowledged the GOP would rather elect a Democrat chairman than back Scozzafava. “I think it somewhat boils down to the recent election and Tom’s support of Garcia,” Morency said. Scozzafava was recently elected to his 11th term as Moriah supervisor. He is chair of the county finance committee. Douglas was recently appointed to the executive committee of the New York State Association of Counties. He is chair of the county transportation sub-committee. As of Jan. 1, Republicans will hold a 10-5 edge over Democrats on the 18-member board.

have the support of Sen. (Betty) Little and Assemblywoman (Theresa) Sayward, but there’s been no movement.” The new DEC regulation, while prohibiting a municipality from burning, allows individual land owners to burn with a permit if they do not live within a village or city. “We totally disagree with these regulations,” Scozzafava said, noting the Essex County Board of Supervisors also opposes the DEC rule. “I think they’re shortsighted.” Scozzafava said when towns were allowed to burn brush strict safety measures were in place. That may not be the case when an individual burns. “When we did it, it was a controlled burn with the fire department standing by,” Scozzafava said. “Now you’ll have individuals burning. Who knows if it’ll be safe or even what’s being burned? Some people may throw painted wood or other toxic materials on their fires.” The change in regulations hits Port Henry residents particularly hard, the supervisor noted. As village residents they can’t burn and now they can’t take yard debris to the town transfer station. “What are Port Henry residents supposed to do?” Scozzafava asked. “They’re out of options.”

Long distance caregiving Many caregivers live away from their loved ones, and the holidays can be a time when they reconnect with family. The holidays can also give caregivers an opportunity to assess how their seniors are coping with any life changes. Here are some questions that may need to be asked to determine how they are managing: * Are they clean and properly dressed? * Are they walking well? Are stairs presenting a problem? * How is short-term memory? * Has their weight changed, either up or down? * When was the last doctor’s visit? * Were the same questions asked over and over? * Is the home neat and well maintained, or is there clutter? * Should grab bars be installed in bathrooms or hallways? * Check the refrigerator. Is food fresh and healthy, or is there stale or spoiled food? * Does your loved one still drive? Should they be driving? * Are sidewalks clean of snow or are there icy conditions that present a hazard? * Do they have opportunities for socialization or are they isolated? Holiday cranberries “Due to their high concentration of antioxidants and other related phytochemicals, cranberries provide a variety of health benefits, especially for the heart, “ says Martin Starr, PhD, who directs research at the Cranberry Institute in East Wareham, Massachusetts. Dr. Starr goes on to say, “Emerging science also indicates that cranberries can promote HDL (good) cholesterol......help lower blood pressure, and prevent the formation of blood clots.” Another exciting development is the discovery that cranberry juice is a proven fighter against bad bacteria in the stomach including those contributing to stomach ulcers. Commissioner Grannis vows to defy APA decision A
fter the Adirondack Park Agency voted in October to correct a previously, bungled decision to classify both the lake water and lake bottom of Lows Lake as wilderness, DEC Commissioner Pete Grannis decided to turn the other cheek. During their September meeting, the APA Board of Commissioners had voted to classify the lands, waters and lake bottom of Lows Lake-Bog River Flow with a wilderness designation by a close 6-4 vote. The ruling was intended to incorporate most of the waters and the lakebed of Lows Lake/Bog River Flow into the adjacent Five Ponds Wilderness Area. The remainder of the lake was to be classified Primitive, a less restrictive designation that nonetheless prohibits motorized uses. Following an uproar from local government leaders, combined with the fact that the tenure of one of the APA ‘s state designated commissioners term had expired, a revote was scheduled for the Agency’s October meeting. In the October revote, three of the state agency designees, including Betsy Lowe, DEC Region 5 director, reversed the decision with a 7-4 vote. The reversal infuriated several environmental advocacy groups who felt the decision betrayed the facts. Almost immediately, there were rumblings of a potential lawsuit to preserve the protection of the park’s “Finest Canoe Route.” In the most recent action concerning the Lows Lake classification process, DEC Commissioner Pete Grannis sent a letter to Adirondack Mountain Club Executive Director Neil Woodworth stating that: “Effective immediately, the department will manage Lows Lake as a wilderness lake, subject only to existing riparian rights and the limited floatplane access recently provided for.” Under the threat of potential lawsuit, Commissioner Grannis wrote in the letter to Woodworth: “I am writing to reconfirm the department’s commitment to establishing a wilderness canoe route through Lows Lake as called for in the Adirondack Park State Land Master Plan.” Despite the APA Board’s decision, it appears that the DEC commissioner is taking it upon himself to administer Lows Lake under a wilderness classification – even though, based on the APA’s most recent vote, the commissioner ’s promise is not a legally binding agreement. Grannis told WNBZ Radio that it is the agency’s duty to classify all recently acquired lands and that the State Land Master Plan allows for waters to be included in classification packages. However, the commissioners statement is in direct conflict with 7-4 decision handed down by the APA’s Board of Commissioners. DEC Commissioner Grannis further promised in a letter to Woodworth that: “Effective immediately, the department will manage Lows Lake as a wilderness lake, subject only to existing riparian rights and the limited floatplane access recently provided for. I am writing to reconfirm the department’s commitment to establishing a wilderness canoe route through Lows.” Lows Lake was created when Gus Low created two large dams on the Bog River in the late 1800’s. The dams were rebuilt by the state in the 1980’s. The region contains several private tracts on the lake for which grandfathered riparian rights continue to allow motorized use. By no means, does the region’s character remain consistent with wilderness standards. Motor vehicles are still used to access a Boy Scout Reservation on the lake via a dirt road that circumscribes mile of shoreline. The in holdings, with their motorized traffic, combined with the numerous man-made structures are inconsistent with a wilderness designation. The banning of floatplane use on Lows Lake was accomplished when the Adirondack Mountain Club sued the DEC for allowing their continued use on the popular paddling route. The float plane ban was driven by paddler ’s complaints that the noise caused by the roar of the float plane’s takeoffs was ruining the peace and solitude of their “wilderness experience.” Although floatplanes have serviced the region for decades, providing access for numerous visitors, the state never solicited comments from users of this service in the process of making the decision to reclassify the region. Trips into Lows Lake have been described as vital to the survival of the two remaining floatplane operators in the park. However, the current land use management plan will eliminate floatplane access on Jan. 1, 2012. With limited access into a comparable fishery, the ban will likely signal the death knell for the only two surviving floatplane services left in the park. It will be the end of an era, as paddlers replace sportsmen as the primary visitors to the region. Joe Hackett is a guide and sportsman residing in Ray Brook. Contact him at brookside18@adelphia.net
Submerged stumps in the flowed lands of Lows Lake offer evidence of the dams that were established on the Bog River for industrial purposes. Such signs of man's intrusion are incongruous with a wilderness designation, despite DEC Commissioner Grannis' stated intention to manage the region as such.

She volunteered and donated her time to numerous organizations, such as the Red Cross Seniors. Janette was admired for her talent, entertaining people with her dancing and great sense of humor in her home town of Ridgefield, as well as at her summer lake house at Fern Lake (Au Sable Forks, NY in the Adirondack Mountains). Janette was a daily communicant of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. She was a faithfilled member of the Lord’s family. A true American patriot, Janette, enjoyed giving both her time and money to veterans. She was a frequent speaker at elementary schools in the Ridgefield area, where she shared letters from American soldiers, who responded to her letters to them, most of whom she did not know personally. Janette was a lover of learning, travel and living life to the fullest. She will truly be missed by family and friends. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Saturday at 10:15am in St. Mary’s Church, Ridgefield. Burial followed in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Friends were received on Friday, Dec. 11,2009, at the Kane Funeral Home, 25 Catoonah St., Ridgefield from 4 to 6 p.m.. Donations in her memory may be made to any veteran organization or the American Red Cross, Senior Volunteer Program, (R.S.V.P.) Roberts & Eight Ave., Danbury, CT 06810.
Marc Gutchell of 122 Cross Parkway, Vermont native and lifelong resident of Burlington, World War II veteran, loving and devoted husband of his sweetheart June, and proud father of his three children Craig, Tim, and Leslie, passed away peacefully and at peace, at home in the presence of his family on Dec. 7, 2009. Marc was born in Burlington on July 5, 1921, to the late Albert and Sarah (Croteau) Gutchell. He grew up in the Old North End of Burlington with his parents, brother Phil, and sisters Edwidge and Jeannette, all of whom predeceased him. Marc met his future wife June while both were students at Cathedral High School and they graduated together in 1940. In 1942, at the start of World War II, he was drafted into the armed services and was attached to the 409 Bomb Group 868 CMSLER of the 9th Air Force. He served in the European Theater of Operations and participated in the invasion of Normandy as a non-commissioned officer. He was honorably discharged in 1946 and became a life member of the Disabled American Veterans by virtue of injuries sustained during his service. From boot camp in 1942 Marc mailed an engagement ring back home to June. They were married in 1943, during his first leave, at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Burlington. Afterwards they traveled by train to New York City for their honeymoon, where they stayed at the Taft Hotel, and went to Broadway to attend the original musical Oklahoma. Shortly after their week together, Marc deployed to Europe, and didn't see his bride again until three years later. On Aug. 24 of this year Marc and June observed their 66th wedding anniversary. Following the war Marc returned to Burlington to begin his family and career. With the help of the GI bill, the young couple built a house in

Burlington's New North End that became a home in which they raised their three children. At his passing Marc and June had resided in the family homestead for 53 years. Most of his working life Marc was employed as a salesman, including 16 years working in the home and appliance division of Vermont Structural Steel Corporation. In the later years of his working life he became a buildings and grounds manager, first at Trinity College, and later as Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds for the Chittenden South School District. Following his retirement in 1983, Mr. and Mrs. Gutchell spent their summers on Lake George at the family cottage in Ticonderoga, New York. Marc believed strongly that as a citizen of the community, one should be active and involved in its support, and contribute to its welfare and progress. In 1946 he became a charter member and the first Senior Vice Commander of the Burlington chapter of the Disabled American Veterans. In 1958 he became a charter donor to the Vermont— New Hampshire Red Cross blood program, and remained a regular donor for over 25 years. In 1957 Marc became a charter member of the Vermont Home Builders Association and served for several years as its first Executive Director, and then for 14 years as an associate member of the Board of Directors. Mr. Gutchell was a volunteer for more than 25 years to the Burlington Community Chest (now the United Way), including serving as the Industrial Division Chairman in 1957, when he was instrumental in raising the largest amount of total annual contributions in the programs history to that point. In 1958 he played a key role in the formation of the Junior Achievement Program of Greater Burlington. He served as a sales advisor and Board member of the organization for 14 years, including two terms as President in 1967 and 1968 respectively. Also in 1958, Marc graduated from the Dale Carnegie Institute, and subsequently became a Graduate Student Assistant Instructor for the program. In 1968 Marc was appointed to Burlington Mayor Francis Cain's Advisory Committee, and also served as Chairman of the Sub-committee on Development and Expansion of Recreational Facilities. Following his retirement Mr. Gutchell spent 10 years as a member of the Fanny Allen Hospital Associate Board of Directors, and was a volunteer for Chittenden County Meals on Wheels program. Marc was a past member of the Knights of Columbus, the Burlington Elks Lodge, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Lake Champlain Regional Chamber of Commerce, Sales and Marketing Executive International, as well as a life member of the Disabled American Veterans. He was a member of Saint Mark's Catholic church. Marc is survived by his June, his wife of 66 years, his daughter Leslie Bouchard, and sons Timothy and Craig, and their spouses Laurie and Sandy. He is also survived by his daughter-in-law Mimi, and his seven grandchildren; Jennifer Paradee and her husband Matt, Michelle Duval and her husband Jim, Kirstin Decelles and her husband Paul, Kimberli King and her husband Kevin, and Allyson, Colin and Wiley Gutchell. He is also survived by Ella, Emma, Tanner, Makayla, and Acadia, his great grandchildren. The family wishes to acknowledge and thank Dr. John Fitzgerald, Marc’s long time cardiologist and friend, for providing years of extraordinary care. Marc was a rare, unique, and wonderful gentleman whose pride and passion was his family. He leaves a legacy of love and a life lived well. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Friday, Dec. 11, 2009, at 10 a.m. in St. Mark Roman Catholic Church with burial to follow in Lakeview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family asks that contributions be made in Marc’s name to the Vermont Chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, 40 1/2 Proctor Avenue, South Burlington, Vermont, 05403. Visiting hours were held on Thursday from 4-7 p.m. at the Ready Funeral & Cremation Service South Chapel, 261 Shelburne Rd., Burlington. To send online condolences, please visit www.readyfuneral.com
