Dreading Holiday Spending: 10 Tips to Avoid Debt It's Black Friday and your head's pounding, your hands are sweaty and you've got a bad case of the chills. No, you don't have the flu. What you've got is a case of holiday debt anxiety. The parties, gift shopping and entertainment can take a heavy toll on your cash flow, your credit cards and leave you with the fear that you're not going to see financial solvency anytime soon. If you've been hurt by the economy â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and who hasn't? â&#x20AC;&#x201C; resolve now not to go into debt for your holiday gifts, whether you celebrate Christmas, Chanukah, Kwanzaa or the New Year. As of this week, just 30 shopping days remain until Christmas, and Ticonderoga Federal Credit Union has smart planning tips to help you avoid holiday debt by budgeting and saving. 1. Budget. First and foremost, create a holiday budget. Calculate the amount available to spend on all your holiday festivities, including: everyone you'll give a gift to, cards and postage, decorations, entertaining, year-end tips for service providers, donations, and travel costs. 2. Use cash or a debit card. Studies have found that people spend around 15 percent more on purchases paid with a credit card. For individuals whose holiday spending plans come close to last year's average planned spending of $830, not using credit could reduce that by $125. 3. Open a Christmas club savings account. Put money in it each week or pay-period, and near the end of the year, the credit union sends you a check with a little interest on top. To get an idea of how much you'll need to save, look at how much you spent this

Christmas and divide the amount by 52 - that's how much you'll need to put aside every week. 4. Get Creative. Write and illustrate a homemade story featuring your child as the main character. Or put together a scrapbook of memories through the years. 5. Get gifts together. For recipients like teachers, bosses and coaches, arrange to give a group gift. By pitching in, a group can offer a quality thank-you gift and save around $15 per person. 6. Don't buy for yourself. Last year, shoppers reported that they took advantage of holiday sales and spent an average of $120 on themselves. Resist the temptation. 7. Get Thrifty. Garage sale or thrift store items that cost next to nothing provide an opportunity for truly unique gifts. An old satin prom dress for example with some batting can be used to recover old picture frames in an elegant way. 8. Give practical gifts or offer to do things for each other. If you're a computer genius, offer your skills to friends and family members when they need assistance, offering to baby-sit may be priceless to parents that you know. 9. Spread out your debt with a low-rate holiday loan. Similar to the budget plan with your electric company, you may spread your holiday spending over 12 months of payments, often with lower rates than credit cards. 10. Return Items. It's not too late to bring back purchases that put you over budget. Or items that you receive for that matter that just don't fit your lifestyle. Remember the reason for the season, and let these tips begin your planning for a financially healthy holiday and a prosperous new year.

‘Hometown Holiday’ in Glens Falls features artwork, crafts, shopping, performing arts GLENS FALLS — During the holiday season, Glens Falls is transformed into a place that evokes thoughts of bygone holidays, Norman Rockwell style. Downtown is full of the holiday cheer and energy in December, as almost nightly a variety of events have been planned. Besides a variety of traditional holiday performances at the Charles R. Wood Theater, various stores and galleries downtown will be hosting an array of events in the city's annual Hometown Holiday celebration. The Lower Adirondack Regional Arts Council’s Lapham Gallery will be holding their annual Holiday Showcase, featuring fine art and craft works, from over 50 artisans. Selections include handcrafted jewelry, art, ceramics, specialty food, and home accessories for the discerning. Nov. 27 through 29, the holiday season kicks off with the annual North Country Festival of Trees, renowned throughout the state, at the Queensbury Hotel. The event is a spectacular Christmas wonderland. It not only features 100 or more decorated Christmas trees, but it includes gingerbread houses, arts & crafts, holiday boutique with handmade items, activities, games, children’s crafts, and breakfast with Santa. That same weekend, plus Dec. 12 and 13, the unique Shirt Factory Artists Studios are holding their annual open house events. Downtown holiday kickoff Christmas cheer in Glens Falls hits high gear Friday Dec. 4 with its Hometown Holiday & Tree Lighting, 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. in City Park and throughout downtown. A thousand or more folks gather in city park to see the city’s official tree illuminated while folks sing carols. The event features music and special downtown festivities including horse & wagon rides, visits with Santa & Father Christmas at Glens Falls National Bank and across Glen St. at TD Banknorth. Shop windows decorated by LARAC artists, and shopkeepers may be hosting receptions and special discounts. Female shoppers will doubtlessly enjoy the offerings of downtown stores Wednesday Dec. 9 during Ladies Christmas Night, complete with entertainment and specials and refreshments. Due to sell-out performances, they added one more performance this year. Sunday Dec. 6 brings the ever-popular holiday concert of the Glens Falls Symphony, with a children’s choir, beginning their joint performance at 4 p.m. at Glens Falls High School. Posh Christmas Decorations on a Pauper’s Budget As fun as it is to get your home into the holiday spirit, it can be a pretty expensive process. Don’t think that you need to spend a lot of money to create an elegant and festive holiday mood. The holidays have the tendency to lift spirits by invigorating the senses. Here are some rich yet inexpensive holiday decorating tips that will leave your home your home feeling cheery, bright and sparkly. • Festive Smells: The scent of fresh-baked goods filling the house. Since most people can’t spend all day baking, you need to think of other ways to bring a fresh, holiday scent into the room. Scented candles, available in all different sizes, shapes and colors are a very festive addition to the home. Pick up a couple of inex-

pensive scented votive candles or tea lights and let the scent fill the air. For a longer-lasting scent, consider purchasing a jar or pillar candle. While these do cost more, they last a lot longer. You can find some nice scented candles at your local dollar store or drug store. Popular holiday scents include apples & cinnamon, pine, vanilla, gingerbread, peppermint and clove. You can also make your own homemade potpourri! A great trick is to take some dried flowers, a half stick of cinnamon and wrap it all up in some mesh cloth. Tie it with a festive ribbon and there you go! You can make a couple of sachets and use them as tree ornaments or elsewhere in your home. Another great idea if you have a Christmas tree is to spray the tree with men’s cologne. Pine cones basted with pine oil is also a great seasonal scent to consider. A bowl full of lightly-scented pine cones also makes a very elegant centerpiece. • Festive Sounds: While Christmas music is perfectly acceptable, if you are having a non-denominational holiday celebration, consider playing some soft classical music or jazz. Good music, no matter what kind, will get people into the celebratory spirit, no matter what religion they are. By choosing classical music or jazz, you add an air of sophistication and style to your home. It’s also a good idea to keep the volume low so you don’t have to shout. Don’t think that you need to have guests in order to play holiday music! There are plenty of ways that you can create an elegant holiday decor for your home without spending tons of money. You can make your own garlands out of felt scraps, for instance. Cut out holiday shapes out of felt and string them together with wire, or even floss. String these up and down banisters and across your mantel. Make some stylish ornaments for your tree by tying a lovely ribbon around a pine cone. You can dip half of the cone in some white craft paint to make it look snow-covered. Dip it in gold paint for a more elegant look. Once you are done with your holiday baking, you can hang your holiday cookie cutters with some red ribbon. By using a hole punch on some of your left over wrapping paper scraps, you can create some festive holiday confetti. Sprinkle it on tables, countertops, and mantle or even at the base of your tree. Make a candle holder out of a cleaned out mayonnaise jar by tying a ribbon around the neck of the jar. Now drop a tea light in the jar, nestling it in peppermints or nuts and you have a beautiful holiday luminary! You clearly don’t have to spend a lot in order to set a holiday mood with your decor. Just by using what you have around the house, you can create an elegant and stylish holiday setting. Get the whole family involved in the decorating process for even more fun and inspiring results.

Photos with Santa will be available, and children are sure to enjoy games, refreshments, gifts and activities including singing Christmas carols beside the town Christmas tree. In Chestertown, that same warm spirit is shared Saturday Dec. 5, as children gather at 9:45 a.m. at the Chester Municipal Center on Main St. to welcome Santa Claus who will be arriving via a fire truck, bearing gifts for all the children. He’ll hold court in the town courtroom as children share their holiday wishes. “Lights On” slated in Johnsburg JOHNSBURG — Both the holidays and winter ski season are right around the corner and a sure sign of the time is Johnsburg’s annual month-long celebration, “Lights On.” Over the past 20 years, residents and businesses across Johnsburg communities have come together each year to create a town-wide celebration of winter and the lively atmosphere it brings to the surrounding areas. The tolling of the Methodist Church Carillon will kick-off the events of “Lights On” during the first weekend in December.

On Friday, Dec. 4 the ceremonious lighting of the community Christmas tree will take place at dusk. The evening will also be highlighted by a candle light service dedicated to service people lead by Pastor Wayne Schoonmaker and caroling lead by Denise and Frank Conti. Children can meet Santa and Mrs. Claus and enjoy hot cider and goodies at the Owens House after the lighting. New art work will be displayed from the World Awareness Children’s Museum

A “Made in the Adirondacks” Christmas in Indian Lake INDIAN LAKE — The twelfth annual Indian Lake Country Christmas Tour (CCT) will bring the holiday spirit to Indian Lake the weekend of Nov. 27. This year ’s theme embraces the location of the event and is called “Made in the Adirondacks.” This theme has attracted more than 60 local and regional artisans and crafters who will showcase their work during the CCT. Sales will take place in the homes of artisans as well as throughout the town. In addition to shopping, those who attend are invited to see and learn, first-hand, how “Made in the Adirondacks” items are hand crafted. The CCT also offers opportunities to make hand-crafted treasures by attending hands-on classes and workshops. Workshops will be available for children to create their own holiday gifts and there will be opportunities for photos with Father Christmas. Workshop donations are forwarded to the Hamilton County Community Action Agency Children’s Gift Fund. Children activities will also feature Willemson’s model train exhibit and demonstration. The world premiere of “An Adirondack Christmas Carol” will be featured at the Indian Lake Theater over the weekend at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and at 2 p.m. on Saturday. All good things must come to an end and the two-day tour will culminate at a closing ceremony and bonfire on Saturday evening.

Chamber plans decorating contest SCHROON LAKE — The Schroon Lake Chamber of Commerce is once again sponsoring its annual Christmas Decorating Contest. There are two divisions, one for individual homes and the other for the business community. Prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place for the individual homes and certificates are awarded to the businesses for first, second and third place. People are asked to have their homes and businesses decorated so decorations will be in place for the chamber ’s annual Old Tyme Christmas Celebration to be held on Saturday, Dec. 12. The judging will take place the following week. People should make sure outdoor lights are turned on. The judges will drive around the main streets and roads including Route 9, Route 74, village side streets and Aldermeadow Road. The legend of Christmas stockings A Christmas stocking refers to an empty sock or sock-shaped bag that children hang on Christmas Eve in the belief that it is to be filled with presents by Santa Claus. The gifts are generally of a small nature, consisting generally of small toys, goodies like candies and fruits, coins or other such items that are often referred to as stocking stuffers or stocking fillers. The bigger gifts are wrapped in present papers and placed near the Christmas tree. The tradition of Christmas stockings is said to have originated from the actions of a kind noble man named Nicholas, who was born in 280 AD, in Patara, a city of Lycia, in Asia Minor. While still young, his wealthy parents died in an epidemic. A true follower of Jesus Christ's principles, Nicholas became a Christian priest and used all his riches to help the poor, the needy, the sick,

and the suffering. He dedicated his life in the service of God and was made Bishop of Myra at a young age. Bishop Nicholas became known throughout the land for his kindness and generosity. A true celibate, Nicholas never married and had no children of his own. But he loved children greatly and often gave gifts to the kids of his hometown. This is why, he became known as the gift giver of Myra. A rich man, he traveled across the country helping people, giving gifts of money and other presents. However, Nicholas always gave his gifts late at night, so that his identity would remain a secret. He did not like to be seen when he gave away presents, so the children of the day were told to go to sleep quickly or he would not come! Nicholas was eventually named the patron saint of children and sailors (because of his concern for sailors and ships) and came to be known as Saint Nicholas. Through the centuries many stories and legends have been told of Saint Nicholas' life and deeds. 2009 Home For The Holidays - 29 peasant and his daughters. Knowing the financial condition of the father, the kindly saint decided to help him. But he wanted to do this secretly. So he went to the peasant's house one night with a bag of gold and waited for the family to go to bed before he could throw the bag through the open cottage window. That night, after finishing their washing for the day, the daughters had hung their stockings by the fireplace to dry. Little did they know that their benefactor was hiding nearby, waiting for them to go to sleep. A little later, as they turned of the lamps and fell asleep, St. Nicholas tiptoed to the cottage window and peeked inside. In the light of the moon, he saw the daughters' stockings hanging close to his reach. He carefully put in his bag of gold in one of the stockings and went away as stealthily as he came. When the father found the bag the next morning and opened it, he was ecstatic. There was enough gold in the stocking to pay for the dowry of one daughter. It seemed like a godsend to him. Who could have sent it, he wondered. With this timely gift the father was able to provide for his eldest daughter and saw that she got married to a nice groom. On another night Saint Nicholas set off with one more bag of gold, and threw it carefully into another stocking, so that the second daughter was provided for. When his daughters excitedly brought the bag to their father the following morning and opened it, he could not believe his eyes. With this gift the father was able to marry off his second daughter too. But by this time, the father had grown eager to discover his mysterious benefactor, and the next night he kept on the lookout. Then, for the third time Saint Nicholas came with a bag of gold upon his back and walked on to the window. The old lord at once recognized his fellow townsman. He fell on his knees before the kindly Bishop, cried out in joy and gratitude and thanked him with all his heart. With his blessings of Saint Nicholas, the poor father was able to see his three daughters get married. He lived a long and happy

life thereafter. And this is how the tradition of Christmas stockings is said to have started in the European countries. It is also believed that Santa Claus is actually an alteration of this same Saint Nicholas, Santa standing for Saint and Claus for Nicholas. Since then children have been hanging Christmas stockings or putting out shoes, eagerly awaiting for gifts from Santa Claus. Originally, children simply used one of their everyday socks, but with time special Christmas stockings were created for this purpose. Today, Christmas stockings of a wide variety of styles and sizes can be found in gift stores across countries. There are also special Christmas stockings available in the market. In modern culture, Christmas stockings are also a popular homemade craft. Some families design unique stockings for each family member. Many families create their own Christmas stockings stitching the name of each family member to the stocking so that Santa knows which stocking belongs to which family member. In some countries, the contents of the Christmas stocking are the only gifts that a child receives at Christmas from Santa Claus. Western Christmas tradition dictates that a child who behaves badly during the year will not get a gift in their Christmas stocking and will receive a piece of coal instead. In many places, the Christmas stocking is to be stuffed by a gift that will stimulate the five sensory organs. Traditional celebrations of Christmas demand that the stocking be hung on the fireplace mantel. However, since many contemporary homes do not have fireplaces, stockings are hung in almost any location. Today, children all over the world continue the tradition of hanging Christmas stockings. Kids of all nations look forward to Christmas and when the stockings are hung, they know the most anticipated time of the year is not far behind.

Santa Fest returning to Ti Dec. 5 at Community Building TICONDEROGA — The third annual Santa Fest will be held in Ticonderoga. The community holiday party has been planned by the Ticonderoga Area Chamber of Commerce Saturday, Dec. 5, 1-4 p.m. at the Community Building. Santa Fest will feature a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus, a community tree lighting ceremony, live entertainment, refreshments and activities, such as ornament making, tree decorating, making of holiday cards and balloon art. The event is free and open to the public, said Barb Brassard, chamber executive director. Santa and Mrs. Claus will meet with each child and have photos taken. Last year ’s event drew a large crowd of children and adults to the Community Building. Santa Fest is just part of a busy holiday-theme weekend in Ticonderoga. The Museums Christmas Store will be open at Ticonderoga Heritage Museum (entrance to Bicentennial Park) Friday, Dec. 4, 2-8 p.m. and Saturday, Dec. 5, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Participating museums will be Fort Ticonderoga, the Ticonderoga Cartoon Museum, Ticonderoga Arts and the Ticonderoga Heritage Museum. Holiday train to stop in Ti, Port Henry TICONDEROGA — The Canadian Pacific Railway “Holiday Train” will again visit Ticonderoga and Port Henry. The decorated train is scheduled to stop at the Ticonderoga train station at 5 p.m. and at the Port Henry train station at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 30. “Christmas will come a little early,” Moriah Supervisor Tom Scozzafava said, announcing the train’s visit. “People really look forward to it.” This will be the fifth year the train, covered with hundreds of holiday lights and carrying a live concert, will stop in Ti. Museums join for holiday sale Museums Christmas Store open Dec. 4 and 5 TICONDEROGA — Historic Ticonderoga is offering a historic opportunity for holiday shoppers. The Museums Christmas Store will be open at Ticonderoga Heritage Museum (entrance to Bicentennial Park) Friday, Dec. 4, 2-8 p.m. and Saturday, Dec. 5, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Participating museums will be Fort Ticonderoga, the Ticonderoga Cartoon Museum, Ticonderoga Arts and the Ticonderoga Heritage Museum. Each will offer a variety of items from their gift shops for sale. The community’s industrial history is on display at the Ticonderoga Heritage Museum. Commonly called the “1888 Building” the museum is housed in the only remaining structure of the old Ticonderoga Pulp and Paper mill that once sprawled across most of the lower section of the town. Today the museum hosts an Adirondack gift shop and displays exhibits on the 200-year history of industries that built the town. The two primary exhibits center on Ticonderoga’s papermaking industry and the graphite used in the Dixon Ticonderoga pencils. There are also exhibits on early tools, toys and games. There are plans for a major exhibit on waterpower, family interactive programs and exhibits, and a series of temporary exhibits on major industries and inventions. The 1888 Building is an exhibit in itself. It was once headquarters to the International Paper Co. mill that operated along the adjacent LaChute River. When IP moved its mill a few miles north of the hamlet, the building was given to the town. The museum

Special exhibits are: Sid Couchey on “Richie Rich and Friends,” Thomas Nast defeating Boss Tweed, the famous Gibson Girl, Animation with Chuck Jones, and “100 Years of the Comics.” Ticonderoga Arts is located at Ticonderoga Arts Gallery, 84 Montcalm St. It is open Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The gallery currently features the work of 19 artists, more than double that of a year ago. Fort Ticonderoga, site of America’s first victory in the Revolutionary War, is now one of the region’s top tourist attractions. The fort, which features a restored 18th century fort and a museum with more than 30,000 artifacts, drew more than 86,000 visitors last summer. The 2,000-acre not-for-profit historic site also includes the Log House Restaurant and Museum Store, the Thompson-Pell Research Center that houses the administrative offices and the research library with over 13,000 rare books and manuscripts, the Pavilion, which is slated for future restoration, and the King’s Garden at Fort Ticonderoga, the 18th-century garrison garden, a children’s garden and the Native American garden.

Hancock House to host Festival of Trees TICONDEROGA — The Festival of Trees, a holiday tradition in Ticonderoga, will again be held at the Hancock House. The Ticonderoga Historical Society is looking for any community organizations, school groups, clubs or business to once again to participate in its annual Festival of Trees. Groups are invited to decorate the Hancock House with a tree, centerpiece, gingerbread house, cookie tree or any other type of festive decorative art in a traditional theme. It serves as home to the Ticonderoga Historical Society. The Headquarters House was erected in 1926 and presented to the New York State Historical Association by Horace A. Moses, a native son of Ticonderoga, to further the interest of the people of northeastern New York and the Lake Champlain and Lake George valleys in history and the fine arts. According to the Hancock Museum literature, the house was constructed as a replica of the John Hancock home which stood on Beacon Street in Boston and which was demolished in 1863 to make room for a new wing of the State House. John Hancock, a Revolutionary patriot, was a rich Boston merchant and his home was one of the finest of Colonial mansions. Entering through the front door, one cannot help but notice the magnificent staircase that has three different designs of spindle used on each step, with intricately carved newel posts. from the measured drawings made by John Sturgis before the original was destroyed, and it would be fireproof. The exterior, made with Weymouth granite, have survived well the atmospheric and weather conditions, which have lent a happy effect to the stones, causing color changes of greens, pinks and a warm gray. The museum holds many cherished and priceless antique rarities for visitors to see. The first of these are the original paintings hanging on the walls. Portraits of New York governors were commissioned and executed for the City of Albany through the term of Charles Evans Hughes. Since Governor Hughes’ days, the Herbert H. Lehman and the Franklin Delano Roosevelt portraits have been added through anonymous gifts to the association. From Chippendale chairs to old sleighs, the three storied building holds many conversation pieces. The fanciest of sleighs is a an elaborate two-seated sleigh with a raised coachman’s seat of the type used in the latter part of the 19th century and was loaned by the Ticonderoga Pulp and Paper Company. It was manufactured (c. 1875) by Golder & Post, carriage makers in Newark, N.J., from 1842 to 1887. Completely furnished rooms down to the clothing, lie in waiting. Some people have rented space for photographs, others come to visit and learn of the history of this foreign land. The museum is the locale for the archived Ticonderoga Sentinel, which is on microfiche. Valuable records of history lie within these walls and a gift shop holds something for everyone. The only year round history bookstore for miles, the gift shop offers books for adults, students and youth. Artists are invited to show their art throughout the summer and give lectures in the Assembly Room. This room, which can be rented for meetings and other gatherings, house the artists’ paintings from wildlife to scenery, portraits to architecture, oils to watercolor, all of which are offered for sale.

Midnight Madness coming to Port Henry PORT HENRY — Christmas will arrive in Port Henry Thursday, Dec. 3. That’s when the Town of Moriah Chamber of Commerce will host its 20th annual Moriah Midnight Madness. “We want people to enjoy the holiday atmosphere and have a lot of fun,” said Jack Woods, chamber president. “I hope they’ll come out and enjoy the entertainment, refreshments and support the local businesses.” Midnight Madness will begin at 5 p.m. and feature store sales, giveaways, street vendors, music, fire truck rides for the children, candy, face painting, balloons, games and more. Santa will arrive on a Port Henry Fire Department truck and will meet with children — and adults — on Main Street. There will also be Christmas caroling and fire truck rides for children. The Moriah Central School band and chorus have also been invited to entertain. Midnight Madness has long been a popular event, Woods said, with families as well as local merchants. “It’s a success,” he said of the annual event. “It’s a good shot in the arm for local businesses at the beginning of the month. Hopefully people will continue to shop right through Christmas.”

Just as grocery shopping with a list can prevent costly impulse buys and oversights, it's wise to prepare a plan of action before you ascend the ladder with lights in hand. Here are five tips for effectively lighting your home's exterior. 1) Take a photograph of the façade of your home and draw in your ideas with a marker. Try several options before settling on one. With a detailed plan, you can accurately calculate your lighting requirements. 2) Make sure lights are working before you hang them. If you are combining lights and greenery, save a step by wrapping garlands with lights before stringing them up. 3) Use the architecture of your home as a guide. Follow roof lines, windowsills, and other significant elements, such as window boxes or a gazebo. Your goal is to highlight those existing shapes, not work against them. 4) Create a pleasing vignette by lighting several trees or shrubs (a group of three is appealing). Vary the bulb size to suit each plant. For every foot of tree, use at least a 100-count strand of lights and weave it in and out of tree branches, creating layers of light that emanate from within. 5) Highlight any evergreens with coloured floodlights in crisp white or seasonal green. (Avoid red lights for this purpose, since they make green trees appear muddy.)
