Text by Robert F. Smith – Editor, Photo by Richard Martin Ron Patch of Chester was recently named Citizen of the Year by Grand Master Thomas Johnston IV of the 11th Masonic District in Chester. Ron is a long time friend of The Messenger staff. We were happy to hear he received the award, and agree with the assessment that Ron’s “high energy level” and “commitment to projects” makes him well deserving of the honor. We also thought that the honor rated more than just a quick mention inside, so we decided to put Ron on our cover this week. Congratulations to a good guy and hardworking citizen.

John Donohue and Uli Riemenschneider were married recently in a ceremony at Plymouth State Park, conducted by Alice Nitka of Ludlow. Uli's brother drove from Detroit to attend the wedding festivities bringing the newlyweds a different form of "get-away" to start their married life – a tandem bicycle which the newlyweds proudly rode through downtown Ludlow, with the traditional tin can line attached.

BRGNS Fundraiser Was a Success Submitted by Black River Good Neighbors Black River Good Neighbor Services of Ludlow held its Fall Rummage Sale at Fletcher Farm over the weekend of October 1. The results exceeded everyone’s expectations. “A huge success” is how Audrey Bridge, Executive Director of BRGNS Thrift Shop and Food Shelf, described the event. “The flow of customers was brisk from the opening on Friday until just before closing on Sunday.” Audrey continued, saying “We’ve become an event that people look forward to. People came from as far away as Canada, Maine, New Hampshire and many other parts of Vermont. They realize that the bargains and the quality of merchandise are hard to beat.” The Board of Directors and the staff of Black River Good Neighbor Services want to thank the community for the many donations of clothing, housewares and furniture. Thank you to the many volunteers who worked long hours. Thank you to the Ludlow Country Store, DJ’s Restaurant and Subway, who donated healthy, tasty food that kept all of the volunteers’ energy levels up. Thank you to
61080
the individuals who baked goods and donated them for sale. The Board would also like to thank Ludlow Town Hall and Okemo Mountain for providing clothing racks for the sale items. Jim Fuller, President of the BRGNS Board of Directors, added, “None of this could have happened without the generous donation of the buildings by the Fletcher Foundation and the Fletcher Farm School of Arts and Crafts. Jim also wanted to give a special thank you to Mr. and Mrs. Frank Dwyer who allowed BRGNS to store furniture in one of their buildings. “The
storage they provided allowed us to collect furniture throughout the year, which resulted in a huge part of our fund raising success” said Jim. Also adding to the success of the Rummage Sale were Susan Damone Blach who provided a hand-made quilt valued at $1,200 for raffling off. It was won by Phyllis Kathan of Ludlow. Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Potter provided a hand made Doll House as a silent auction item that was won by Mike LeClair of Chester. “We have the best volunteers and Board Members who donated an amazing number of hours, and we appreciate
all of those in our community who believe in and support our mission,” said Jim. All the money that was raised will help cover fuel, food and rent assistance for those who qualify in Ludlow, Mt. Holly, Proctorsville, Cavendish and Plymouth. To make donations, or if you have any questions, please call Audrey Bridge at 228-3663. The BRGNS Spring Rummage Sales dates have been set, so mark your calendar for May 21 to 23, 2010. In photo, Kai Weinstein of Springfield drew the quilt winner’s name.

FOLA Seeking Grand Piano Donation The newly-formed Friends of Ludlow Auditorium (FOLA) is seeking a grand piano for the auditorium in Ludlow Town Hall. According to FOLA Chairperson, Ralph Pace, the group has arranged for five master concerts next summer in the auditorium for the Okemo Young Artists Program. "The only problem," Pace said, "is that they need a grand piano for their performances." Pace noted that FOLA has made acquisition of a grand piano its first priority. Pace added, "We need a grand piano in the auditorium for a number of reasons beyond those of the Okemo Young Artists Program. Many musical groups depend on a piano to augment their programs. Additionally, it would be of use to local students and school performances." FOLA was organized to support and promote the use of the newly-renovated auditorium in Ludlow Town Hall. Anyone who would like to donate a grand piano to the auditorium may contact Pace at 228-7239 or ralphpace@tds.net.

Support Your Local Farms – Shop Dutton Farmstands
Story by Robert F. Smith – Editor Photos by Richard Martin One of the goals of The Messenger is to help promote the regional food movement and to draw attention to the growers, farm stands, stores, chefs and restaurants that are spearheading the use of locally grown and raised foods and meats. That’s an easy task to do when it comes to Dutton Farm Stands. With stands on Route 9 in West Brattleboro, on Route 30 in Newfane and on Route 11/30 in Manchester, the Duttons are one of the mainstays of Southern Vermont and New Hampshire’s regional food scene.
“I would say that 80 percent of what we sell we produce ourselves,” said Wendy Dutton, who owns the stands along with her husband Paul. Their four children, ages 6 to 19, are also involved in the business. In fact, one of their sons gave me an excellent tour of the Dutton’s pick-your-own strawberry fields when I was doing a story on them a few years ago, and he was barely a teenager. Though the pick-your-own season is past, the Dutton’s have added apples this year to their normal berry picking. They do still have plenty of fresh produce, in particular squash, carrots, pumpkins, a wide selection of apples and beets, at all their stands,

which will all be open year round as of this winter, seven days a week, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. The stands offer a lot more than just produce. They have two bakeries which produce baked products made from scratch using their own fresh ingredients. In Manchester they also make fudge that is available at all their stands. “We’re providing local produce,” said Wendy, “and people know where their produce is coming from when they buy from us. They’re buying direct from the farmer.” Above, left, some of the produce available at any of the Dutton Farm Stands, and at right, some of the baked goods they also bake on site using the best available fresh products.

Springfield SEVCA Location Needs Your Help Grace Morey’s 90th
Story by Joe Milliken - Editor Southeastern Vermont Community Action, SEVCA, a community action family service and thrift store, recently suffered a huge loss at their 23 Main Street location in Springfield, when a rain storm caused serious damage to a large amount of winter clothing, boots and infant clothing items that were being stocked to help folks in need this winter. The store was in the process of having the roof repaired, when an overnight rain storm caused the damage
before the repairs had been completed. "We had just begun stocking clothes and boots for the winter season when the rain storm and damage occurred," Tonia White stated in a recent interview. "It was a very unfortunate accident, which leaves us without much time to restock our shelves as the winter months approach." This is where SEVCA needs our help. Rockingham Rec Area Breaks Ground On New Pool Story by Joe Milliken - Editor The Rockingham Recreation Area recently broke ground on the construction of the new pool facility. Present for the ceremony were various Selectboard members and Village Trustees. Believe it or not, what was originally conceived all the way back in 1951, the Town of Rockingham has officially begun construction on a new swimming pool at the long-time town facility, which will also include a new swimming area
called "zero entry," providing a separate area for small children to play in shallow water. Zero entry also provides a safe entrance for the handicapped. The project will also include a new pool liner and skimmers with new decking around the pool, and there are plans for a grand opening in June of 2010. Story and Photo by Robert F. Smith – Editor Parks Place was created 15 years ago with a mission to help promote healthy children and families in our region, and it has grown far beyond its initial conception into a vital community center housing some 30 different human service programs. In fact, it’s outgrown its facility. Located in a two story house at 44 School Street next to the Central Elementary School in Bellows Falls, Parks Place now needs to expand. The good news is that it already has a place to grow – into the carriage house located on the property. The problem is, as usual, funding. Robyn Weisel, Parks Place’s Development Director and in charge of the capital campaign to fund the expansion, said that the organization needs to raise $100,000 to turn the carriage house into a finished building with two floors, four offices
and a meeting room. “With over 30 providers using Parks Place,” said Weisel, “we have people meeting in the halls and kitchen. Yet a lot of the stuff we do is confidential, and we need to have enough appropriate space. We have 10 offices here, five permanent and five rotating. It’s just not enough.” At this point Parks Place has raised $70,000, and needs just another $30,000, and they hope to break ground by the end of this month. There have been several large donations and grants towards the project, and any individuals or businesses that would like to donate toward the expansion can call Weisel at 463-9927 ext. 201. Above, Parks Place Director Barbara Ternes, left, and Development Director Robyn Weisel in front of the carriage house at Parks Place that will soon be converted into much needed extra office and meeting space.

long, long ago. This program is a partnership of The Nature Museum at Grafton, the library, and Ascutney Mountain Audubon Society partially funded by the TransCanada Corp.

Workshop on the Art of the Interview Come to the Rockingham Free Public Library on Monday, October 19 at 5 p.m. for a free workshop which will focus on the art and craft of using quotes accurately and effectively. Due to popular demand, “Art Of the Interview” is a continuation of Jeff Potter ’s September workshop “Other People’s Words.” First-timers are also welcome. Knowing how to get interesting quotes from your sources can give a shot of adrenaline to your writing. If you work with nonfiction – newspapers, newsletters, press releases, websites – you can make your copy more interesting when you include quotes. But how do you get these quotes? Follow us on a field trip through an interview or two, a journey that will point out the decisions you can make on the fly to make the most of the conversations you have with your source and the techniques you can use to get those quotes into your notebook. In addition, Potter will show participants how to use quotes effectively -and accurately -- in your writing. This workhsop is open to the public- no previous writing or journalism experience is required. Participants are invited to bring a project or share successful techniques. Limited to 15 participants. Sign up early at 463-4270. The library is at 65 Westminster Street in Bellows Jeff Potter works for the nonprofit Vermont Independent Media as editor of The Commons newspaper in Brattleboro. This workshop is part of The Media Mentoring Project (MMP) which is in its fourth year promoting media literacy and community participation in local media. The MMP free workshops help
Windham County citizens get their voices heard in local media—covering topics such as constructing an effective press release or writing a letter to the editor, an opinion piece or a compelling lead. Workshops also address general journalism or media literacy issues. The adult program now meets once a month for a journalism skills workshop, which includes the option of an individual follow-up session by e-mail with the MMP presenter. For details, call Betsy Arney at 246-6397.

Story by Robert F. Smith – Editor Photos Courtesy of Dylan Duncan The 3rd Annual Search for a Cure will be held on Saturday, October 17 from 1 to 3 p.m. at The Pinnacle on Lover's Lane in Chester. The Search, created by Dylan Duncan, formerly of Chester, benefits the Amyloid Treatment & Research Program at Boston University School of Medicine to support drug research for the deadly disease Amyloidosise. In May of 2006, Dylan tested positive for the gene of Familial Amyloidosis. His mother, Janet, had suffered with the illness for five years before losing the battle in 1997. In May of 2007, Dylan was officially diagnosed with the disease. For almost a year, Dylan has been working in the studio to record his album, What To Keep & Let Go, and is hoping for a December or January release. The song “Ask You” was written in honor of his mother and will be the final song on the record. Local Chester artist Brendon Thomas is featured on the single. Dylan will be selling CD's of “Ask You” at the Search event and proceeds will benefit Amyloidosis research. Utensils in the Still Life Tradition
Story And Photo by Robert F. Smith – Editor What started out as a training tool – photos of a variety of kitchen utensils to help students identify them – has turned into a sizeable art display that will be shown this month in Brooklyn, NY at the Almondine Bakery Gallery on Water Street. Roberto Gautier and his wife Elissa Descoteau, formerly of Brooklyn and now residents of Bellows Falls, began taking photos of the utensils when Roberto was teaching at New York City’s College of Technology in Brooklyn. He was the Professor of Hospitality Management. “One day I brought in a colander, and realized most of the students had no idea what it was,” he said. “So, we began taking these photos to help the students learn the various names.” They shot hundreds of photos of newer and vintage utensils from dozens of cultures against two colorful
and texturally interesting walls under the Brooklyn Bridge, and also some were photographed with a red dumpster as the background. They call the result “Utensils in the Still Life Tradition,” and the simple, beautiful photographs are fascinating. Elissa is the photographer, and Roberto refers to himself as her collaborator, setting up the shots. “We’d go down under the bridge with a duffel bag full of utensils,” he said. “When we started setting them up, people would think we were having a tag sale!” Elissa hunts for vintage picture frames, then sorts through the hundreds of photos to find the right picture to put in it. After the show in Brooklyn, the couple will be showing in galleries here in Vermont. Check The Messenger for when and where. In photo, Elissa Descoteau and Roberto Gautier with some of their art photos of various kitchen utensils.

GMFS Presents a Haunted Night at GMUHS Submitted by the Green Mountain Festival Series The Green Mountain Festival Series is thrilled to begin its 25th Season on Saturday, October 24 when we present A Haunted Night at 7:30 p.m. at Green Mountain Union High School in Chester. Just in time for Halloween, we will welcome two Vermont artists to our stage, storyteller Joe Citro, author and lecturer, has written more than 10 fiction and non-fiction books about New England oddities, including ghosts and local hauntings. He will join us with spooky stories that the whole family will enjoy. His books include five novels of suspense, four volumes of historical oddities, a collection of regional humor, two travel guides, and a coedited book of essays. Since 1992 Citro’s commentary series on Vermont Public Radio has featured the state's bestloved ghosts, monsters, madmen and mysteries. A native of Chester, Vermont, he is an expert in Vermont's occult lore, including Spiritualism and his fascination with local tales will be infectious. Also on stage will be Wonderfun Productions’ magicians Scott Morley and Britni Orcutt. Morley and Orcutt will present Houdini: A Tribute to the

Highlights of the show include many of the Houdinis’ classic illusions, “Second Sight,” “The Straightjacket Escape,” and “Metamorphosis.” This season, the Green Mountain Festival Series will be welcoming many artists who grew up in our community and having benefited from the many programs GMFS brought to the stage and into the classroom, have gone on to be successful performers themselves. Get In The Game A View On Sports By Messenger Editor Joe Milliken
Well, Red Sox Nation, the 2009 run is officially over… and it was quite painful. You had the feeling that the Angels were finally due to beat the Sox in the playoffs, simply because Boston had beaten the California-Anaheim-Los Angeles-Angels the previous four times they've met in the playoffs. So you just knew, the uh-Angels were due.
You just didn't think it was going to happen in the fashion that it did. Getting swept three games straight and an unthinkable blown save by Jonathan Papplebon to close out the series. Papplebon is going to take a lot of flack for this one, but I am not so sure how deserved it is considering that before that blown save, he had never given up a single run during the playoffs in his entire career. He just picked a really bad time to finally give up some runs. The biggest priority in the off season for the Red Sox? Re-signing Jason Bay, finding a shortstop who can field and hit a little and deciding if Daniel Bard is going to be the next closer, because Papplebon wants to break the bank and if the Sox were thinking about
letting him go, Sunday's blowup just might have sealed Pap's fate. And besides, closers are a lot easier to find than talented shortstops and left fielders who hit 30+ homers and 100+ RBI's. --------------------------As the NBA season approaches, the Celtics pre-season is under way and of course the biggest and (really the only) question coming into camp is the health of Kevin Garnett. After bone spurs behind his knee caused him to miss last season's playoff run and quite honestly, any chance of the Celtics repeating as champions, Garnett's return to form is probably the single biggest factor in determining who will represent the East in the NBA Finals this season.
Because who else is going to challenge Labron James and the Cavaliers now that they have brought in Shaquille O'Neil. Yes, Shaq. The Diesel. The Big Aristotle. Say what you will about Shaq, but the man still brings excitement to the NBA and now has yet another battle cry: "Win a ring for The King" (as in King Lebron James). With a healthy Garnett, plus the acquisitions of veteran big man Rasheed Wallace and the versatile Antonio McDaniel, the Celtics will make a serious run at a title if they can stay healthy. -------------------------In local high school action, the Bellows Falls Terriers football team won their biggest game yet under the tenure of coach Bob Lockerby,
when they knocked off unbeaten Windsor to not only take home the Dale Perkins Trophy, but also move into a tie for first place with Windsor. Both teams are now 51 on the season (see full game coverage below). --------------------------In Springfield, the defending state champion Cosmos football team appear to be rounding into form at the right time, after completely slamming Mount Abraham 57-0 at Brown Field. After suffering through some injury problems early in the season, most notably quarterback Brandon Boyle, the Cosmos appear to be hitting their stride as they moved to 4-2 on the season. The aforementioned Boyle was surely the star on this day, throwing for
two touchdown scores, running for two more and also running back a punt for a fifth, all in the first half. Matt Mitchell and Billy Wheeler each caught a touchdown pass, while Colin LaPlant also caught a TD pass from freshman Mike Meuther. And for good measure, Boyle also intercepted a pass for a touchdown in the Cosmos shut out romp. ---------------------------In Brattleboro, the Colonels football team got two touchdown runs from Davin Freeman and another from Mark LaValley in a 21-6 win over Spaulding. Brattleboro quarterback Cory Gilbert also hit Rob Meyer for a 2point conversion in the win, which put the Colonels at 2-4 on the season.
Late Touchdown Gives Terriers Big Win Over Windsor Story by Joe Milliken - Sports Editor Photo by Doug MacPhee The Bellows Falls Terriers football team had arguably their biggest win in a few years on Saturday, after knocking off rival Windsor, 38–31, in the annual Dale Perkins Trophy game at Hadley
Field in Westminster. However this game also had plenty of twists and turns, as the Terriers once held a 30-8 lead over Windsor, before the Yellowjackets came storming back to take the lead on a field goal with just over six minutes left in the game. But the Terriers struck
last when quarterback Ben Hewitt scored the go-ahead touchdown with less than a minute remaining in regulation. This was a game filled with excitement from start to finish, as both teams fought hard until the end. There were also plenty of strategy, including BF

coach Bob Lockerby inserting his 200-pound lineman Josh Pratt as a running back. The Terriers jumped out early in this one, going up 16–0 in the first quarter on two touchdown runs from Tim Muzzey and two, 2–point conversions from the aforementioned Pratt. But the Jacks came right back with 57-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Gavin Callahan to Jacob Page to finish the quarter. However in the second quarter Bellows Falls came right back with rushing touchdowns from Pratt and Hewitt for the 30-8 lead. To the Yellowjacket’s credit, they came back
again with a 15-yard TD pass from Callahan to Tyler Kibling and a two–point conversion from Austin Soule to end the half. In the second half Windsor did not let up, scoring two more touchdowns on a 1-yard touchdown run from Callahan and Holloway touchdown catch to cut the Terrier lead to 30-28 after three quarters. Holloway then kicked a field goal at the start of the fourth quarter to give Windsor their first lead of the game at 31–30, before the Terriers struck one last time when QB Hewitt rumbled in from one yard out with just under a minute left in regulation to seal the victory
for the Terriers. For the game, Muzzey led the Terriers rushing attack with 159 yards on 20 carries and two touchdowns, while Ryan Hayward added 67 yards on 10 carries. The lineman-turnedpower back Pratt also had 41 yards, including a touchdown and two, 2–point conversions. Callahan also had an outstanding game for Windsor, throwing for 198 yards and two touchdowns, while running for another. The big win puts the Terriers at 5–1 on the season and tied atop the division with Windsor. Below, Bellows Falls running back Tim Muzzey finds a hole in the Windsor defense.

PRESIDENTS TOP GREEN MOUNTAIN Story by Joe Milliken - Sports Editor In a rival match up between the Black River High School and Green Mountain Union High School boys' soccer teams, the host Black River Presidents notched a 4-0 win in front of the home crowd under the lights at Dorsey Park in Ludlow. After getting off to a slow start, mostly due to some swarming Green Mountain defense, the Presidents finally got on
the board halfway through the first half when after being awarded a direct kick, Black River senior Kippy Turco blasted a shot into the corner for a 1-0 lead. It would turn out to be the only score in a first half mostly dictated by the defenses and goal keeping of Black River ’s Cris Kowalski and Green Mountain’s Jacob Walker. In the second half however, the Presidents would do a much better job of possession and
keeping the ball on the ground, resulting in a Jake Covell goal on a nice assist from Tim Rumrill, before Tyler Schuab scored a third goal on another assist from Rumrill. Josh Bickford would finish the scoring for Black River with an unassisted goal. The win, at press time, put the Presidents at 9-2 on the season with big matches coming up against Leland & Gray and Bellows Falls.
Black River Soccer Middle Schoolers Improve To 8-1 With Two More Wins Story by Joe Milliken - Sports Editor Photo submitted by Bruce Schmidt The Black River Middle School girls’ soccer team recently improved their record to 8-2 with backto-back wins over Dorset and Green Mountain. At home against Dorset last Friday, the Lady Presidents got a terrific performance in goal from Katie Cloutier, as she notched a shutout in the 3-0 win. Kateri Collins, Hannah Livingston, Sara Stryhas,
Sydney Miele and Theresa Abbott also played extremely well defensively in the win. The Black River offense also did a great job in this one, getting goals from Abigail Schmidt (assist from Sarah Rumrill), Morhan Kathan (assist from Rumrill), and Rumrill (assist from Kathan). The midfield play of Hanna Vanguilder and Gabrielle Miele, Hanna Tobey, Cammi Stengal and Brooke Willard also played a big part in the
victory. In the follow-up game at rival Green Mountain in Chester, coach Bruce Schmidt and assistant coach Betsy RoseCaldwell decided to change the lineup around a bit and try some new things. It worked well as Black River got on the board first with a goal from Sarah Rumrill, before Green Mountain came back with a goal to tie the game at the half. In the second half the Lady Presidents got their
second goal from Morgan Kathan with assists from Sarah Rumrill and Abigail Schmidt, before Rumrill finished off the scoring with an unassisted goal late in the second half for the 3-1 win. "I really think Emily
Chambers had one of her best games of the season against Green Mountain and Brooke Willard continues to improve as a player on the field," coach Schmidt stated after the game. "All these girls are such hard workers and a joy to
be around. They support each other and have fun, but are all business when they step on the field,” coach Caldwell also stated. Black River’s Sara Gabrile surveys the field as she looks to make a play.

It’s Fire in the Dole! Story by Robert F. Smith – Editor Photo Courtesy of Greg Andrews and Deb Murphy One thing Deb Murphy and Greg Andrews recently discovered is that creating a new mixed drink can take some time, but it sure is a lot of fun. The fact that their invention also took top honors in an international drink making contest is just icing on the cake. Or maybe that should be sugar on the rim? Murphy and Andrews have a thing for what Andrews calls Poly Pop – anything to do with Polynesian culture. Anyone who has been in his downtown Bellows Falls shop, The Hula Cat, knows what he means. Filled with an eclectic blend of used and vintage clothing, leather jackets and objects, it has a huge collection of Hawaiian shirts. Murphy and Andrews share that interest with a large group that recently got together for a two day, Dole Pineapple-sponsored international cocktail making contest event at the last 60’s era Tiki-style hotel in America, at Lake George, NY. About 200 Poly Pop aficiendos attended, and 20 competed, including professional bartenders, bar owners and mixologists from all around the US and abroad. The event included a room crawl where participants get a chance to taste many of the entrees. Andrews said that some guests arrive days in advance to completely re-decorate their rooms in a variety of Polynesian themes. He also said that, if you’re not careful, the room crawl can become literally true.
The drink had to use as many Dole products as possible, and it took Murphy and Andrews a month of experimentation to come up with the final product – see the sidebar for the recipe. They started with rum as the base, and knew they wanted to include a slice of pineapple floating on the top with a flame in the center. When they first lit the flame they found the name for the drink as “fire in the hole” became Fire in the Dole. The only way they could get the pineapple to float was to put the ingredients in a blender and turn the drink into a slushie, a drizzle of cherry syrup around the rim adding a lava effect to the flaming, frozen concoction, and the combination of flame, slurpie and Dole in the name gave Fire in the Dole the top honors. “There were some serious competitors there,” said Andrews. “We’re not. We’re having fun.” Presentation is part of the competition, and the couple dressed for the part, presenting the drink in a decorated metal box to protect the flame from the wind, and using dry ice to play up the volcano effect. Though competing against professional mixers and drinks with names like Jaded Passion, Mist Over Kilauea, Pugalicious, Ginger and Mary Ann and Golden Goodness, Fire in the Dole took the day. “It was a lot of fun,” Murphy concluded about the experience. In photo, Greg Andrews and Deb Murphy with their prize winning drink and their trophy.
