Technology, awareness key to reducing sodium levels in Lake George
Street festivals are among the projects of the Montcalm Street Partnership.
Montcalm Street Partnership plans events, seeks new volunteers
By Tim Rowland STA FF W RITER
RAY BROOK | When snow plow drivers in the Lake George region started seeing reductions in road-salt use as a competition, salt use dropped, and today the area has become a model for the scientific treatment of winter highways. Lake George Waterkeeper Chris Navitsky told a meeting of the Adirondack Park Agency this month that the Fund for Lake George knew they’d need to earn the cooperation and respect of the people who drive the snow plows for the town if they were going to reverse the 40-year trend of escalating salt use. “They were not believers at first, and they did not want us coming into their garage,” Navitsky said. But for the initiative to work, “we needed to have a discussion with the people who are actually behind the wheel applying the salt.” The drivers wanted proof that they were using excessive amounts of salt, and thanks to “black box” technology that monitors a variety of conditions from the cab of the truck and sends the information to the cloud, they were able to view hard data. Navitsky said the drivers have gone from skeptics to interested participants.

“This is a fantastic group of people, who are all dedicated to Ticonderoga,” he said. The goals of the group are economic and historical promotion of downtown, but also to give local residents events that are entertaining and family friendly.
RECENT PROJECTS
By Tim Rowland STA FF W RITER
TICONDEROGA | The Ticonderoga Montcalm Street Partnership (TMSP) has outlined an ambitious agenda for 2019, which includes festivals, art auctions and beautification projects for downtown, according to the Ticonderoga Area Chamber of Commerce executive director Matthew Courtright. The TMSP is a group of volunteers who in coordination with their partners possess the skills and resources to create a positive future for Downtown Ticonderoga. Courtright said the organization is also looking for people who would be interested in participating, either by serving on committees or helping at events. “We’re trying to grow the number of people in each of the committees,” Courtright said. “We need people with new ideas and new connections, but we also need boots on the ground” at the events. Courtright said 2018 was a year of continued growth for TMSP in preparing for a variety of events and projects, planning and organizing for future projects and initiatives, as well as working closely with community partners for the betterment of Ticonderoga and specifically their mission of Downtown Ticonderoga.
According to a chamber fact sheet, recent projects in coordination with partner organizations include improvements to town parking areas, streetscape improvements on Montcalm Street, flower boxes and plantings on Montcalm Street, Annual Street Art Project, placement of additional garbage cans on Montcalm Street, hosting of a Downtown Business Forum, enhancement to Welcome Sign on Wicker Street, an update of the Streetscape Plan, adding fireworks to the Ticonderoga End of Winter Carnival, assistance in the location selection of new mural that was created by Emily Pike and assistance with Downtown Ticonderoga grand openings and ribbon cuttings. TMSP also plans and implements annual events in coordination with their partners including: Ticonderoga End of Winter Carnival, Community Clean-Up Day/Beautification Week, Best 4th In The North Celebration, StreetFest, Street Art Auction, and HalloweenFest. In 2018, FallFest was added to the annual event lineup. TMSP also participates regularly in local shopping and dining events as well hosts a number of fundraising events for their committees and projects throughout the year.

To get to the championships, the team placed third among 23 teams from seven counties — a region that extended from Westport in the north to Troy in the south. Quiz Bowl adviser Maria Bagneschi said when the Ticonderoga team qualified last year, it was for the first time in 10 years. To send the team to Washington, supporters pitched in to contribute $8,500.

TICONDEROGA | Ticonderoga student Michael Fitzgerald is not a fan of dodgeball. Not that he minds the sport particularly, but “dodgeball” was the correct answer to a question he got wrong in the high school Quiz Bowl competition. And contestants agree, it’s not the questions you get right but the ones you get wrong that stick with you. But Michael and his teammates got plenty of questions right, enough so that,
for the second year in a row, the Ticonderoga Quiz Bowl team has qualified for the National Academic Championships in Washington, D.C. The team also boasts a player, Natalie O’Neil, who also qualified for the Individual Player National Championships Tournament in Chicago. Rounding out the team heading to Washington are Ethan Kerr and Aidan Porter.

“The support from the community was spectacular,” she said.
VARIED STRENGTHS
The Quiz Bowl is an academic challenge with varied formats and a broad variety of categories. Ticonderoga team members say they have varied strengths that complement each other in terms of subject matter. Natalie said she watched a lot of “Jeopardy!” and stays current on the news to help gain an edge. To qualify for individual honors, she competed in Burlington and came in fifth out of a field of students from across the country. Bagneschi said she and Natalie will leave for the individual competition in Chicago on April 6. Ethan said the competition is both fun and stressful. » Quiz bowl Cont. on pg. 3

CCE celebrates successful move Ag science, education and growing 4-H programs among hands-on events planned
DIGITAL SKILLS
By Kim Dedam STA FF W RITER
LEWIS | Staff at Essex County’s Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) are settled into new office space on Route 9N, just west of the hamlet here. “We’re in, we’re warm, dry and cozy,” 4-H Education Leader Linda Gillilland said during a recent visit. CCE’s new digs were created in the former Jehovah’s Witnesses meeting hall that Essex County purchased last fall for $165,000. The open space plan provides for cubicle areas, the CCE web communication and phone lines and a few bright meeting areas. It’s quite different than the small but uninsulated offices CCE used in the historic 4-H building at the county fairgrounds. The space is brightly lit with windows all around and has a kitchen table area for small meetings on one side with larger meeting space on the other. The county’s Soil and Water Conservation District did not move into this location, but is in the Department of Public Works property down the road, awaiting an addition there.
OPEN HOUSE
Cornell Cooperative Extension provides vital education, farm outreach and science support for a myriad of regional agricultural concerns, including soils, fish and game, family food and health, 4-H and Adirondack
New Cornell Cooperative Extension 4-H Educator Jessica Spaulding Tyson was hired to help expand programs in Essex County. She arrived in February and is based here at the new CCE headquarters in Lewis. Photo by Kim Dedam Harvest programs. Master gardener volunteers also coordinate efforts through CCE. To celebrate spring, transplanted in their new location, CCE staff are holding an open house for the public to visit, meet and greet and peruse the many events and programs already set in motion. The county’s 4-H youth hope to have lambs in a pen out front. And in their new digs, there are lemon trees sprouting on one window, eggs incubating in a small clutch beside Gillilland’s desk. Several new 4-H clubs plan to share growth in innovative programs, including the Adirondack Bark Club, lead by Anita Deming, retired CCE director, and a new teen tech outreach club created through National 4-H Council efforts
with Microsoft Corp. “These would love to have new members and older teens who might help as junior leaders,” Gillilland said. The Bark Club is gearing up for outdoor dog training events based in Westport, the 4-H educator explained. And Green Thumbs Club, a countywide horticultural group, will host a planting activity at the open house. Master gardeners will test garden soils for visitors to the new CCE headquarters. “We have a lot of fun with science,” Gillilland said. “We want to let everyone know we’re here and to see all of the services we provide. 4-H is not just cooking and cows.”
Essex County was selected as one among very few to build a new Microsoft 4-H Tech Changemakers Club, pulling together a group of tech savvy teens who can work in collaboration with the National 4-H and Microsoft as ambassadors, helping inform and bridge the digital divide in these rural towns, Gillilland said. The group is forming now with the help of teens Seth and Conor Bushey, and their dad, Brad, of AuSable Forks, who traveled to Washington, D.C., to learn about tech outreach. “We are looking for teens to teach digital skills to someone who might be able to use them,” Gillilland said. Essex County was identified among rural areas nationwide for the lack of broadband coverage. “Information about this program will be presented at the open house,” Gillilland said. Another 4-H club gearing up for summer are Equi-Riders, based in Westport at Crane Mountain Valley Horse Rescue, where a dedicated group has spent the winter learning about equine care. “And that club is open to anyone in the county,” Gillilland said. Visitors will also have a chance to meet 4-H Educator Jessica Spaulding Tyson, a recent graduate of SUNY Morrisville who returned to her hometown in February with a growing family to work with CCE. Dr. Carly Summers, CCE agricultural resource director, will be on hand to share her work with local farm and science initiatives, alongside CCE’s Farm-to-School program developers. Cornell Cooperative Extension’s celebratory open house is set for Saturday, April 6, from noon to 2 p.m. at 8487 U.S. Route 9, Lewis. ■

haven’t gotten their tax bill,” Supervisor Edna Frasier said.
By Tim Rowland
REPLACEMENT
STA FF W RITER
HAGUE | Hague resident Art Steitz said he’s owed about $2,300 for electrical inspections, but the checks, which he believes have been mailed, have not shown up in his box. Meanwhile, Hague tax bills that always made it through to the property owners before, have been returned to the town as undeliverable. Rural delivery in the town has been sporadic since the U.S. Postal Service reassigned a popular and longtime mail carrier last September. A number of replacements have been hired and then quit after as little as one day on the job, and residents and town board members alike say their appeals to the Postal Service have met with dead ends. Hague resident Michele Gautreau said in a letter to The Sun that a petition she started late last year was signed by 90 people, but with few results. “Many of us are still not receiving our mail on a daily basis,” she wrote. “It is not the carriers’ or the local Postmaster’s fault. That fault lies with the U.S. Postal Service itself. Answers anyone?” Deputy Supervisor Steve Ramant said he’s about given up at getting any satisfaction out of Albany and is working with elected representatives in Washington to try and resolve the issue. At this month’s town board meeting, town officials and residents alike said that, if anything, the situation has gotten worse since the regular carrier was reassigned in September. “We still have people calling saying they
Post Office spokesman Mark Lawrence said officials are aware that troubles have arisen in finding a suitable replacement. “At this time, the Postal Service is going through its robust hiring process to select and train a carrier who will serve this community,” Lawrence said in an email communication. “We are optimistic but have no firm timetable on when this process will be complete.” He said, “Postal officials continue to monitor mail delivery on a daily basis to the customers of Hague,” although they had not heard of returned or undelivered mail. “We are not aware of reported widespread misdeliveries, however if delivery issues are experienced, customers are asked to call 800-ASK-USPS (800-275-8777). This allows the opportunity to address the specific problem as well as document the occurrence.”
‘ECONOMY OF THE LOCATION’
Ramant said the route was reassigned after a count came in just below the threshold for a satisfactory number of customers. The post office has blamed the “economy of the location” for the reassignment. But Ramant said the study was done in March when a considerable number of summer people are away, and also does not take into account the difficulty of the rural, hilly route. He said he has volunteered to go along with new carriers to show them the ropes, but the post office has declined his offers. Making the job more difficult, the mail does not arrive to the local post office presorted, which causes new carriers more time and aggravation, Ramant said. ■

Team members said along with their areas of expertise, they complement each other in terms of personality. Aidan, who plays on the Sentinel football team, said he’s naturally competitive and that, “The answers I take the most pride in are the ones I know that no one else knows.” Ethan said he’s more laid back. But, “When it comes to the classroom, I can be pretty aggressive,” he said. ■

13 TONS
The excessive use of salt and its detrimental effects on the watershed have become better known in recent years. According to the Fund for Lake George website, “sodium chloride levels in Lake George have tripled since 1981 ... Each year, 13 tons of road salt is applied per lane mile in the Lake George watershed for a total of 15,000 tons annually. At least another 15,000 tons are applied on private roads and walkways.” Navitsky said the initial equipment buy-in is admittedly expensive, but towns will recoup the cost in time. For example, a special plow blade with a flexible edge can gouge out pockets of ice that a regular blade would skip over, reducing the need for salt. Brining the highway — similar to oiling » Partnership Cont. from pg. 1 The group’s events and dates for this year are as follows: Beautification Week/Clean Up Days and Student Give Back Day: May 6-12 Best 4th In The North: July 1–4 StreetFest: July 27 Street Art Auction: Aug. 15 HalloweenFest: Oct. 25-31 (Business Trick or Treating on October 31) Look for details to be announced on all of the above events.

SMALL CREATURES
Higher salt levels in lakes can kill off the small creatures that feed on algae, leading to increased blooms that have become an increasing threat to New York lakes and beaches. It also is believed to stunt the size of trout fry, and skew the sex of frogs toward greater populations of males. Since recreation and fishing are central to Adirondack economies, Navitsky said towns are realizing it’s in their economic interests to cut back on the use of salt. ■ serving as the TMSP Coordinator through a contractual partnership. All the actors have the same goal: that the roads be made as safe as possible during winter weather. So the Fund for Lake George has been showing how those results can be achieved while saving the towns money and the drivers time.
a pan with cooking spray — before the storm can buy a couple of hours of time, meaning that plow drivers — who work monstrous schedules during storms — can report for duty a little later. Navitsky said that tough hills like Tongue Mountain in Hague can stay just as clear with fewer passes of the plow. Storms can be analyzed individually with more targeted salt applications based on expected precipitation. For example, Navitsky said, it doesn’t make sense to apply salt early in a storm, when a later plow pass will throw it off the road.

Fourth-graders received a lesson on the circulatory system where they replicated blood flow in veins and arteries. Fifthgraders learned about the respiratory system and created a trachea and lungs out of straws, glue and shaving cream. While sixth-graders also learned about the respiratory system, their lesson included getting a good look at a set of pig lungs. Following the lessons, mentors went on to discuss the various medical professions that someone might pursue if they were interested in the respiratory or circulatory systems.

Ti Drama Club presents ‘One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest’ By Tim Rowland STA FF W RITER
TICONDEROGA | The Ticonderoga High School Drama Club will present the comedy-drama “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” on Friday, April 5, at 7 p.m. and Saturday, April 6, at 2 p.m., the first drama production to be performed in the Ticonderoga High School’s historic auditorium since its full renovation last year. “The show is not a straight comedy, but still a lot of fun,” said Michael Fitzgerald, who plays Randle P. McMurphy, a role popularized by Jack Nicholson in the film adaptation. “‘One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest’ will give the audience a whole new perspective on the Ti High Drama Club.” The play, written by Dale Wasserman, is based on the novel by the same name published by Ken Kesey in 1962. In it, McMurphy plays a fun-loving scallywag who feigns mental illness in order to serve out a jail term in an Oregon state hospital instead of on a prison work farm. This puts McMurphy on a collision course with Nurse Ratched (played by Natalie O’Neil), who prides herself on running a tight, often suffocating, ship. In the novel, the story is told from the point of view of the Chief, a Native American who, like McMurphy, is not being forthright about his mental condition. “The show has a lot of complex themes,” O’Neil said.

MENTAL HEALTH TREATMENT
The book was published during the complexities of the Civil Rights movement, and also was a groundbreaking effort to shine a light on the condition of mental health treatment, in which patients were often warehoused with little chance to get better. “There are a lot of shenanigans, and laughter is encouraged,” director and Ti English teacher Kyle Lang said in his director’s notes. “However, the show ultimately deals with serious subject matter, and one of the reasons we chose this show is to raise awareness of mental illness. The students understand the empathy and tolerance in this story while enjoying the humor.”
The cast and crew include Aubrey Smith, Natalie O’Neil, J.D. St. Andrews, Kiiran Weller, Michael Fitzgerald, Lindsay Jordon, Becca Manning, Kylee Bennett, Lana Hurlburt, Skye Mason, Madison Fish, Avery Kidder, Zyleen Tyler, Myleigh Willett, Lorelei Leerkes, Katherine Gallipo, Karlee Witherbee, Vivian Porter, Christian Hodges, Dalton Gonyea, Kaelee Kristensen, Julieanna Holman, Ethan Hill, Nicholas Lender, Riley Dinsmore and Sabrina Frasier. “Their work ethic has been really inspiring and their talents are unmistakable,” Lang said. Admission is $5 for students and seniors, $8 for adults and $20 for a family. ■
County sales tax revenue keeps upward trend Latest figures show $138K increase in revenue to date
‘LEVELING OUT’
By Elizabeth Izzo STA FF W RITER
ELIZABETHTOWN | Essex County’s sales tax collections have continued to increase in the first months of 2019. A report from the Treasurer’s Office last week showed that the county collected more than $4 million in the first two months of the year through its 4 percent sales tax. That’s roughly 3.5 percent, or $138,381, more than was collected at the same time last year. In the fi rst collections this month, the county garnered an additional $1,542,005 — $44,795, or 3.3 percent, more than this time last year, according to the treasurer’s report.
In 2018, the North Country region as a whole, which includes Clinton, Essex, Franklin, Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence counties, saw sales tax growth over 2017 of more than 5.8 percent, from $248.1 million to $262.6 million. Essex County saw an increase in revenue of 10.3 percent, more growth than any other county in the North Country, from $28.8 million to $31.8 million. County Treasurer Michael Diskin told The Sun that he foresees the county’s sales tax revenue plateauing, and doubts the area will see similar growth to last year. “It’s slowing. I think it’s leveling out now,” he said. Diskin noted that the latest check received in mid-March slightly dipped by $18,000 under last year’s collections.

Thoughts from Behind the Pressline
The story behind the story: Part 1
Another story hit the wire service recently about a small town newspaper in Waynesville, Missouri, that was forced to close By Dan Alexander last fall and the repercus• PUBLISHER • sions now being felt in the entire county. The Daily Guide joined more than 1,400 other newspapers across the U.S. to close over the past 15 years, according to data compiled by the University of North Carolina. While national outlets worry about the president, who calls the press an enemy of the people, many American communities have lost vital services that are not easily replaced. No longer is someone watching the local government for them, chronicling the sporting exploits of their children or generating a feature story on a kindly neighbor. It’s easy to shrug off these closings as changing times, poor management or the advance of technology, but is that the primary cause of this trend? Although each of those has played a role in chipping away the veneer of the industry, it’s not that simple; it begs a closer look. Operating a newspaper has never been an easy task, as folks like Warren Buffet or Jeff Bezos, some of the richest men in the world, have recently discovered. But like so many vital community services that we might take for granted, while funding is critical, it’s not the essential ingredient in a successful newspaper. This public service, for-profi t business requires several things that other businesses may not. Ownership must be on-site and actively involved in the day-to-day operation, especially during challenging times. One of the biggest calamities has been the decline in local newspaper ownership through mass acquisitions by large investment firms, affecting the majority of these closings. This leaves the day-to-day decisions on spending, personnel and strategy up to a financial manager, who is far removed from the community and lacks the understanding it takes to meet the needs of a locality which isn’t factored into a decision. If you were ill, would you want an insurance adjuster who never met you and knows little about you except your vitals or would you prefer your local doctor and family involved in deciding whether to reduce care by letting nature take its course or undergo a procedure that could save your life? In that context, decisions take on a different meaning altogether. The bean counter only looks at the beans and never the person. In next week’s column, I’ll point out the impact of “fake news“ and why a family would allow the bean counter to make the final decision in the scenario I used above. ■

GOP tax bill benefits the wealthy
Check out ‘rich collection of plantbased food options’
To the Editor: How to get large tax breaks: Because he loves tax breaks and Israel, Sheldon Adelson (billionaire casino mogul) is a natural fit for the Republican party, and he spends and spends and spends. Like many true believers, he was terrified of a Democratic takeover in the midterm elections. Because of that, he cut a $30 million check to Paul Ryan and the House GOP in a last-ditch attempt to stem the momentum of the blue wave. Ryan even paid him an in-person visit to kiss the ring and beg his case: Ryan wasn’t actually allowed to directly solicit seven-figure donations, so he couldn’t directly ask Adelson for the money. Good thing we have rules, right? I would hate for a system that allowed for direct solicitation between our most corrupt political figure and a casino boss without the former having to step into a hallway for a second. Of course, Adelson has quite the financial incentive to bankroll the GOP. Bloomberg’s Steve Dennis even put a number on the incentive, all of which came Adelson’s way as a result of the GOP tax bill: That’s $670 million in the first quarter. He’s going to be netting 2 billion in one year at this pace. If anything, the GOP is getting the short end of this stick. Shouldn’t they be charging him more? Trump and his family will be netting a billion dollar gain from this Republican tax bill. As the late billionaire Leona Helmsley once said, “We don’t pay taxes, only the little people pay taxes.” - Joe DeMarco, Jay ■
To the Editor: With crippling storms hitting our country in past months, we look forward to the first day of spring, balmy weather and a superb second chance to actualize those New Year’s resolutions favoring more exercise and healthy eating. The shift toward healthy foods is everywhere. Popular fastfood chains like Chipotle, Starbucks, Subway, Taco Bell and Wendy’s all offer plant-based meal options. Food websites tout vegan recipes. Global Meat News reports that nearly half of consumers are reducing meat intake. The financial community is betting on innovative plant food start-ups, like Beyond Meat or Impossible Foods. According to Gallup, sales of plant foods grew 8.1 percent in 2017 and exceeded $3.1 billion last year. Britain’s prestigious The Economist declared 2019 the “Year of the Vegan.” The reasons are ample. The World Health Organization has linked consumption of processed meats with elevated risk of cancer. The U.S. Dietary Guidelines recommend reduced meat consumption. The media keep exposing factory farm atrocities. And animal agriculture is chief culprit in climate change. Every one of us can celebrate spring by checking out the rich collection of plant-based food options in our supermarket’s frozen food, dairy and produce sections. An internet search on vegan foods offers ample recipes. - Able Jorgenson, Ticonderoga ■

CVAC senior night held By Keith Lobdell SPORTS EDITOR
PLATTSBURGH | The seniors of CVAC basketball hit the hardwood at Seton Catholic Central School to represent their school one final time at the CVAC Senior All-Star Game March 19, with both boys and girls teams in action. The night also featured the naming of the CVAC all-star teams, along with three-point and slam dunk competitions. “We get to play with the girls that we competed with all these years and it’s pretty fun,” said Moriah’s McKenzie Sprague, whose high school career ended with five Section VII championships and the top spot on the Viking’s all-time scoring list for girls. “We made it to the fi nal four twice. We made it again to the sectional championship that we won five times since I’ve been on varsity,” Sprague said. “Both (Madison Olcott) and I scored 1,000 points. It was nice to end with the scoring record. I worked hard to do it.” “I would say that I had a pretty successful career,” added Olcott, who also went five-for-five with Sprague in sectional titles. “Every year that I played we got a sectional title and two final four appearances, which is pretty amazing when it’s never been Madison Olcott of Moriah launches a three as part of the CVAC Senior All-Star games that took place March 19. done before. I know we lost this year, but overall, I wouldn’t say I was disappointed at all of what we did and I’m happy.” Northeastern Clinton’s Gabby Dumas also said going to a final four with the Cougars was a highlight of her career. “That is probably the highlight of my life in basketball,” said Dumas, who added it was nice to talk with the other seniors at the game. “We talk about a bunch of things like college and what we plan to do,” she said. “We don’t talk about basketball even though it is the main thing we have in common.” Saranac Lake’s Mistre Newton was one player who talked about her post-high-school plans and basketball. “I hope to play in college for the clubs while I study to become a doctor,” she said. “I love basketball. It’s my favorite sport. I like watching it and love to watch the college teams play.” Other players also reminisced on their time on the court in their final high school season. “I think it’s nice to round out the year with all the seniors,” Peru’s Ally Post said. “It’s nice to play one last time and just play and have fun. I think this year was a good year for (Peru), making it to the sectional finals. We came together at the end of the season, and I’m proud of how we played and put up a fight.” “I like playing with the players I had to play against and it’s nice to see everybody’s talent,” said Saidi St. Andrews of Ticonderoga. “Playing the sectional game against AuSable was a great moment this season because we worked together and it was very exciting.”
BOYS TAKE THE COURT
Northern Adirondack’s Reed Lashway was named as the MVP of the CVAC during the awards portion of the night. “It’s fun playing with all these guys,” Lashway said. “We were able to win a lot of games this season and the fans were great. It was exciting to find out that I had been chosen as the MVP.” For Moriah’s Jerin Sargent, the night was a chance to reflect on a career that included bringing home a state championship. “Number one in my career is definitely winning the state
Stream dreaming! It’s a sure sign of spring when I write about fly fishing. So, if you had a case of the winter blues and needed a night out, By Rich Redman well you missed a beauty. • COLUMNIST • A fly fishing “how to” and “what to use” talk was held at the Middlebury Mountaineer Shop in downtown Middlebury recently. Jessie Haller, of the Orvis Company in Manchester, Vermont, gave a great presentation on his job in product design and development. Jessie gave us an insight into how they brainstorm over making new and better products, plus how each is tested. Jessie gets the job of taking out new rods and seeing how they perform, testing materials for new waders and vests and doing all this while out on a river or stream “working,” of course, to get a fish. I volunteered to be the New York affiliate product tester, but that didn’t go anywhere! I did discover there are still a few of us who prefer traditional vests over all the other fishing equipment carrying items out there like chest packs, sling packs and duffle bag backpacks. He discussed lines, line weights, tapers, coatings, smooth versus textured line and numerous other items of “afishinado” interest! Two items I didn’t know was that Orvis now owns the Scientific Anglers Company, so much of their research and develop-
Ticonderoga’s Colton Huestis goes up for a dunk as part of the CVAC Senior All-Star games that took place March 19. championship,” Sargent said. “Nothing will ever beat that. That was the best. Going to Binghamton is always fun.” “It was fun to play with the best competition that we played with for the past couple of years,” Ticonderoga’s Colton Huestis said. “I’m just going to go out there and have fun,” Plattsburgh High’s Bailey Pombrio said. “Definitely winning the sectional championship was a highlight of my career.” “It’s been a fun and a long career,” AuSable Valley’s Mason Douglas said. “As a freshman, I got to move up and see the guys and be at the final four. I like watching them play, they were a great group of guys.” ■
Conservation Conversations
Jessie Haller presented on tight line nymphing at the Middlebury Mountaineer Shop in downtown Middlebury recently. Bead head nymphs are used to lure fish. ment is the same. Orvis also contributes 5 percent of its pre-tax profits to conservation organizations for projects. After the brief promotional talk, Jessie got down to the meat of the program: tight line nymphing. You may have heard it called French, Polish, Spanish or other names based on where they use the style, but they all are very similar. It’s the same style of nymphing that the USA Fly Fishing team uses. The tight line method of fly fishing uses light weight rods, two or three weight 10 footers. Bead head nymphs are used with either copper or tungsten beads to get them down deep where the fish lie. Long leaders of 15 to 20 feet are used with red and green or other color sighter tied in to act as an indicator. Usually short flip casts or tuck casts are used to get the line out. The rod is held out with the sighter off the water, letting the nymphs drift deep through
dark holding areas where a fish may be waiting for some bug to munch. When a fish goes for the nymph, the line either twitches, stops or moves letting you know you either have a bite or a snag. Concentration, patience and confidence, along with being in the moment are important when fishing this way. Being a “space cadet” out on the water and stream dreaming off into the twilight won’t catch fish. OK, occasionally you do. I know from experience. Focus is the key! Now, that can be a tough thing to do some days. We all like to just get away for a while, sometimes really, really far away, and fly fishing does that for us. The talk went over stream currents and velocities and where the fish may be, how water depth affects velocity and, most importantly, that you need to get the fly down to where the fish is and have a drag free float. It all sounds so very simple until
you get out with a light weight rod, 18 feet of leader and start to pinpoint your casts to cover every inch of water. Jessie’s talk covered the basics a beginner requires, plus. He believes we all should continue to learn every day, whether it’s fishing or any other subject. Never give up and stop learning. So, you missed a great presentation on tight line nymphing. Don’t fret though, more events are planned. The fly-fishing film show is coming in April to Middlebury as well as Lake Placid in May. Both the Two Fly in Wilmington and the Otter Creek Classic are coming with the spring thaws, so tie up another box or two of flies — yeah, I know you already have 10 boxes, so do I — grease your reel, patch the waders and shine up the rod. Spring is really coming, believe it or not! ■ -RichRedmanisaMoriah-basedoutdoorswriter. He can be reached at rangeric@nycap.rr.com.
