ver the past year and a half, residents of Crown Point have been rejoicing over the re-opening of the Champlain Bridge, which connects Crown Point with Addison, Vt.

Along with the bridge, the Crown Point State Historic site sits on the shores of Lake Champlain, giving visitors the chance to view the remains of a fort that was used during the colonial war period.

Penfield Museum

Located in the Crown Point hamlet of Ironville, the Penfield Museum is the former home of Allen Penfield and reflects the 19th Century when mining dominated the regional economy. It is also the birthplace of the electrical age. Crown Point iron was an indispensable product for the North in the Civil War. Iron from Crown Point was used to construct the battleship Monitor. The museum contains samples of iron ore along with pictures of the mines in operation. Rooms in the museum are furnished with original pieces once belonging to the Penfield family. Other historic furniture is also on display. Ironville was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. The homes along the main street were all constructed in the early 19th Century. Those buildings, besides the museum, include the Harwood House, a church, a parsonage, a boarding house and homes and barns that have been in use for 150 years and longer.

Crown Point State Historic Site The Crown Point State Historic Site is run through the state department of Parks, Recreation and Historic Restoration and is, “dedicated to the preservation and interpretation of the ruins of two fortifications from the colonial wars between the British and French. Long before the American Revolution these colonial powers both laid claim to the Champlain Valley and this strategically important peninsula known as Crown Point. The French built Fort St. Frederic here between 1734 and 1737 and used it as a base for raids on British settlements in New York and New England. “Visitors can explore the preserved ruins of these forts and tour the museum which includes a multimedia orientation program, large scale models, and an exhibit of original artifacts recovered from the site by archaeologists. Additionally, the site offers access to the historic Crown Point Pier, the Champlain Memorial Lighthouse, the walking paths on either side of the newly constructed Lake Champlain Bridge.”
