Time capsule reveals its secrets
Moriah Episcopal Church box opened after 145 years By Lohr McKinstry STA FF W RITER
TICONDEROGA | It was an amazing day when the time capsule from the old Moriah Episcopal Church was opened after 145 years beneath the cornerstone. The ceremony at Heritage Commons in Ticonderoga was presided over by facility resident Mary Considine, 95, the remaining officer of the church’s congregation. Among items in the sealed copper box were
a Bible, prayer book, and coins and paper money from the 1800s, including a 50 cent bill. The time capsule was recovered from the cornerstone of the church on Henry Street in Port Henry shortly before it was sold at an Essex County tax auction last fall. It had been placed there in 1872, when the church was dedicated. The last services were held there in 1993.
Considine, a retired teacher, said the Episcopal congregation had been holding services at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church nearby while their building was under construction in the 1870s. “On this day, Sunday, July 1, 1872, the bishop had come by, and they walked over,” she said. “They were going to lay the cornerstone. » Time capsule Cont. on pg. 3

You see before you the last member of the church.” Moriah Town Supervisor Thomas Scozzafava brought the time capsule from the town vault, where it had been stored since Thomas Trow, James Curran and other volunteers The contents of the 145-year-old Episcopal Church time capsule box from Port Henry included church documents, newspapers and money. Photo by Lohr McKinstry dug it up, and he worked to open it with a Dremel tool and reciprocating saw as it sat on a table in the Heritage Commons library. “It was well sealed with solder,” he said. “We had to be careful not to damage the contents.” After about 15 minutes, the box yielded and Scozzafava removed the contents one item at a time as Considine examined them. Besides the coins and paper money, the capsule contained a Bible, an Episcopal prayer book, several newspapers from the region, including the now-defunct Port Henry Record, a piece of iron ore from the town’s mines, missionary documents, an

Scozzafava said he plans to get an appraisal of the coins and bills, which will be stored in the town vault. About 40 people attended the capsule opening ceremony, including Heritage Commons staff and guests, town officials, and interested citizens. The nursing facility provided refreshments after the ceremony. “Thank you for sharing with me and honoring me,” Considine said as the event concluded. ■

Ticonderoga Alumni extravaganza returns By Lohr McKinstry STA FF W RITER
TICONDEROGA | The Ticonderoga Alumni Association is planning a huge multi-year reunion in 2020 and the first fundraiser is a spring dinner on Saturday, April 14. “We’re raising money for scholarships,” alumni representative Robert C. Dedrick said. “In 2001 there was a huge reunion extravaganza in Bicentennial Park, with tents for each year of graduation. People raved about it. It was a great weekend and we’re
planning for it again.” He said the super-reunion weekend will be July 23-26, 2020. Ruby Shoes will provide entertainment and a fireworks display is planned. “Streetfest is that weekend, and there’s a golf tournament and (Hall of Fame) induction dinner. We need to raise $12,000 and we’re starting now.” This fundraiser will be held between the alumni basketball game at 11:30 a.m. and guest bartenders at The Pub from 6 to 9 p.m. “People will be in town for those events, and we thought it would be a good time,” Dedrick said. The Alumni Association will hold its spring spaghetti dinner fundraiser from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 14 at the Ticonderoga Knights of Columbus hall. Cost is $12 a person at the door, and includes pasta, garlic bread, salad and dessert. Takeout is available by calling 518-585-6520. “It’s a kickoff campaign,” Dedrick said. The second alumni fundraiser will be a July 6 chicken barbecue at the Knights of Columbus pavilion out back, with serving from 5 to 7 p.m. and the band Bad Champagne from 7 to 11 p.m. Alumni merchandise will also be for sale at the event. ■

“It’s the perfect juxtaposition. I am really proud of the cast and crew for taking on such challenging, yet rewarding, material.” The play stars Fallon Kennedy as patriarch Bud Turpin’s widow, Adam Kerr as eldest son Ray-Bud, and wife (Rebecca Manning). Other players are Douglas Baker, Talandra Hurlburt, Aubrey Smith, Natalie O’Neil, Kiiran Weller and Michael Fitzgerald. “Ultimately, living and dying in the South are seldom tidy and always hilarious,” Lang said. ■

Seagle Music Colony starting new season International Paper is helping Seagle By Lohr McKinstry STA FF W RITER
SCHROON LAKE | Seagle Music Colony has received a grant from the International Paper Foundation to help fund its in-school opera program in the fall. Each summer more than 500 singers apply and audition for 32 positions at Seagle Music Colony. The singers come to Schroon Lake for nine weeks each summer to perform in operas and musical theater and to receive extensive training in singing, auditioning and career planning. Seagle General Director Tony Kostecki said the program started the in-school program in 2012 and it has blossomed into a program where students perform in 20 schools all over the North Country. “It is important to have the support of the corporate community in recognizing the need for the arts in schools,” Kostecki said. “The Seagle Music Colony in-school opera program takes one-act versions of classic children’s stories complete with sets, costumes and professional singer directly into elementary schools.” Artistic Director Darren K. Woods said that when he and Kostecki first came to Seagle Music Colony 23 years ago, there was no children’s opera program, so the second season they were there they began a summer children’s opera program at the Boathouse
Theater in Schroon Lake. “That summer program has now grown to include performances in Bolton Landing, Chestertown, Blue Mountain Lake, Ticonderoga, Glens Falls and Lake Placid, to name a few,” Woods said. “The fall program directly in schools was a natural outgrowth of the summer program.” The grant from International Paper will go toward the construction of the costumes for the opera this year, which will be “Billy Goats Gruff.” The opera reimagines the fairy tale to teach children about bullying. Each program is followed by a question-and-answer session with students and artists. This summer’s repertoire includes “Candide” by Leonard Bernstein, July 5-7; “Julius Caesar” by G. F. Handel, July 18-21; “The Great Gatsby” by John Harbison, Aug. 1-4; and “Mame” by Jerry Herman, Aug. 15-18. The fall continues with a North Country tour of “The Falling and the Rising” by Zach Redler and Jerre Dye, a brand new one-act opera about

Thoughts from Behind the Pressline
Beware of hackers and scam artists Unless you can tell it’s a check inside the envelope, a letter from the IRS strikes fear in most Americans. By Dan Alexander Many fear the IRS • PUBLISHER • so much they are willing to do almost anything to get them out of their lives as quickly as possible. Recognizing this common fact, opportunistic scammers are on the prey. The final rush before this year’s April 17 tax deadline puts everyone on edge — including tax professionals — making us all easy targets for scammers. There’s a growing concern that sophisticated ID thieves could be stealing some information — bank account numbers, for instance — from tax professionals in a phishing email known as the “New Client” scam. Tax professionals are increasingly a target for data theft, according to the Internal Revenue Service. Already this filing season, the IRS disclosed an upswing in reported thefts of taxpayer information from the offices of tax practitioners. Taxpayer data thefts in January and February are up nearly 60 percent over the same time last year. And it’s not just the tax professionals that need to be on guard: bogus threats on self-service preparers are still just as popular. With the number of these encounters on the rise, we want you to be aware of your rights. The IRS will never call to demand immediate payment, nor will the agency call about taxes owed without first having mailed you a bill. If you haven’t received an invoice, ask them to send it again by registered mail. The IRS will not demand that you pay taxes without giving you the opportunity to question or appeal the amount they say you owe. Beware if they want to negotiate the amount hoping for an amount you might consider worth getting the IRS out of your life. They will not require you to use a specific payment method for your taxes, such as a prepaid debit card or wire transfer. Nor will they ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone. The IRS will not threaten to bring in local police or other law enforcement groups to have you arrested for not paying your taxes. Never give or confirm personal information, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, account numbers or passwords to unsolicited callers and emails. From the Editorial Board
Attacks on news media fuel dangerous precedent A reporter from the New York Daily News was the subject of 15 minutes of Twitter fame last week after being arrested for speaking on his cell phone in the lobby of the Senate chamber during state budget negotiations. Ken Lovett was briefly detained by the state police in Albany before being released — but not before Gov. Andrew Cuomo came to the rescue. Cell phones are banned in the lobby, a policy that is largely unenforced, according to observers. No charges were fi led, and Lovett later said law enforcement were “very professional.” Cuomo later joked about it with reporters at a press conference detailing the budget agreement. “We have set up a $1 million emergency bail fund for arrested reporters. We call it Ken’s Law because we believe in freedom of the press, but we wanted that emergency bail fund,” Cuomo said. Hardy-har. We’ll chalk it up to the governor’s often-corny (but well-intended) sense of humor. All joking aside, Lovett’s detainment is part of a troubling trend, and to treat the incident so blithely belies the sustained and deepening attacks against a free and independent press in this country. We should all question when reporters are led out of a public space in handcuffs. The incident dovetails with an emerging story that continues to dominate headlines. A promotional campaign by the Sinclair Broadcast Group has anchors from its nearly 200 television affiliates nationwide reading identical scripts warning against what they purport is journalistic malpractice.

The anchors state their programming aims to combat “the troubling trend of irresponsible, one-sided news stories plaguing our country.” “The sharing of biased and false news has become all too common on social media,” states the script. “Unfortunately, some members of the media use their platforms to push their own personal bias and agenda to control exactly what people think. This is extremely dangerous to democracy.” Whoa there. The fact that seasoned reporters are being asked to parrot this script to their viewers with no supporting evidence or data is in itself irresponsible. Doing so is the antithesis of our mission statement as reporters. If the Fourth Estate cannot safeguard against the increasingly blurred line between truth and “alternative facts,” who can? Sinclair is perceived by critics as having a right-leaning agenda, and observers have noted the frequency of pro-Trump commentaries. But using trusted reporters as a megaphone to present opinions is deeply alarming, even more so in rural markets with few trusted media outlets like those in which Sinclair operate. These “commentaries” are simply repeating and validating the talking points of a president who dismisses any reporting that casts his tumultuous administration in an unfavorable light as “fake news.” As such, the impact of hard-hitting stories lose their impact while offering legitimacy to a dangerous concept — that there’s some type of overarching conspiracy to discredit an otherwise faultless administration. As the media expert Jay Rosen put it: The
assault rifle. The AR stands or the name for the company which produces the rile, Armalite. To be an assault rifle, as used by the military, it would need to be automatic. The AR-15 is a semiautomatic, which means the trigger must be pulled for each shot fired. As well, it uses a smaller caliber bullet. The NRA had nothing to do with the killings in their school. Rather it was the FBI, police and the other law enforcement who did nothing about tips, and some doctors who examined the kid and declared him to be nonthreatening and not a danger to others who allowed the kid to go on the killing rampage.

network should instead openly market itself as the conservative alternative in local news. Saying “we’re balanced and everyone else is biased” is a disservice to the news organizations who take their professional responsibilities seriously, whether at free local weekly newspapers like this one or national media powerhouses. Our ethical obligations are only magnified by the sensitive nature of today’s political climate, one in which reporters are routinely in the crosshairs and under sharp scrutiny from an increasingly hostile public. There were, however, reasons to be optimistic this week. The president’s sustained blows to the media appear to be losing their impact on everyday Americans, according to a Monmouth University poll released Monday. While it’s alarming that 77 percent of Americans believe traditional major TV and newspaper media outlets report fake news, people cannot seem to agree on the precise definition. That’s troubling, to be sure, and illustrates we as news organizations have a long way to go to bridge the trust gap with the public. But the poll also reveals a plurality of Americans put more trust in major news network than in the president, rating No. 45 less trustworthy than each of the three major cable news networks. We’ll continue to earn public trust by providing accurate information, and for being transparent with our audience and sources. But these sustained attacks are not helping, and pose an additional challenge to an already beleaguered industry. — The Sun Editorial Board ■

Look to Australia for answer to gun control question
To the Editor: On April 28, 1996, in Port Arthur, Australia, Martin Bryant killed 58 people using an AR-15 assault rifle. Shortly after the massacre, the Australian government, with unanimous approval, passed a law banning all automatic assault-type rifles, including the importing of such weapons. The government instituted a “buy back” program where the government bought back such weapons. In the past 22 years since the law was passed, there has been no mass shootings. None, zero! The Australian government is smarter than the American government. Those of you who are afraid of losing your Second Amendment rights? That will never happen. It’s only a fear mongering tactic used by Wayne LaPierre, who receives more than $4 million dollars a year to keep you from approving gun legislation. Joe DeMarco, Jay ■
Disappointed at Stefanik’s environmental record
To the Editor: As a long time Audubon member, I was highly distressed to see the newly-appointed Executive Director of New York Audubon, Ana Paula Tavares, linked with Rep. Elise Stefanik in the March 24 issue of the Sun. Did no one think to inform Ms. Tavares of Rep. Stefanik’s abysmal environmental voting record? Elise Stefanik has consistently voted for economic versus environmental protections, starting with voting for the Keystone XL pipeline; against listing the Lesser Prairie Chicken as endangered; for projects that fund fossil fuel energy, nuclear and atomic energy development; against fisheries management; reducing regulations for development of energy on Native American land; for increased trade in crude oil and related infrastructure and against the EPA issuing carbon pollution guidelines for industries. Protection Act and the Federal Water Pollution Act. She was a key vote in a number of legislative acts that reduced environmental protections including allowing coal companies to continue to dump waste. It has taken New York state about 40 years to attempt to recover from acid rain effects, due largely to emissions from midwest coal production. Stefanik’s major funding comes from sources highly antithetical to environmental concerns. It is sad to think that Ms. Tavares’ newness to New York state is being exploited during this 21st district congressional campaign season. I will continue my local, New York and national Audubon memberships, but begin to watch more carefully the political alliances made by the organization. Phyllis Magnus, Saranac Lake ■
Smoking is a personal choice
To the Editor: In response to the article on Essex County restricting tobacco sales. They want to raise the age from 18 to 21. I was not brought up by my parents that smoked. I started smoking when I was 13. I would like to know when this Adirondack Health Institute Tobacco 21 came into effect? And besides, your agency is adult protective, not social services preventative or foster care. About the statistics on smoker deaths in Essex County: People could die from marijuana, opiates, suicide, car accidents and kidney failure. Thanks for your service, Dr. Savel
To the Editor: I think I speak for many when I say a very big “thank you” to Dr. Savel not only for his recent Elizabethtown Community Hospital endowment for ongoing personnel education, but also for these many years of his and Isabel’s devoted care in their Elizabethtown medical practice. When I and my family moved to the North Country in 1973, I asked a new friend to share with me who was a good medical doctor in the area. The immediate and enthusiastic answer was: Herb Savel. We took the advice, and have marveled at our good fortune to have such expert medical attention and up-to-date expertise for all of these years. And now Dr. Savel makes this major gift to our community: the gift of education; the gift that keeps on giving far into the future. There are not enough ways to say “thank you,” but I wanted to publicly acknowledge my and my family’s gratitude. Guest Viewpoint
The opioid superstorm By Bob Ross GUEST COLUMNIST
Addiction is a disease, not just of individuals, but of families and communities as well. National studies about addiction have shown that for each addicted person, seven other individuals are affected – family members, employers, health care professionals, law enforcement personnel, those in the criminal justice system, and so on. And there’s also the economic costs of increases in emergency room visits and extended hospitalizations, the loss of income to sustain families and in taxes to maintain communities. Combined, all have a negative economic impact on our society. Specifically, the expanding epidemic is giving rise to a new increasing economic problem that Princeton economist Alan Krueger, as published last fall in Brookings Papers on Economic Activity, suggests could account for about 20 percent of the observed decline in men’s labor force participation from 1999 to 2015, and 25 percent of the observed decline in women’s labor force participation during that same period. The greatest loss is, of course, that of human life. In 2016 alone, 64,000 Americans died of opioid overdoses – more than the combined combat fatalities of the Vietnam, Iraq and Afghan Wars. Opiate-related overdoses are now the leading cause of death for Americans under the age of 50. The loss of life from opioid-related deaths continues to grow. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has recently reported that there has been a 30 percent increase in opioid-related deaths in the last 14 months and that a third of the deaths from heroin during that period involve individuals who began their addiction with prescription opioids. In the North Country, St. Joseph’s has experienced a 106 percent increase in admissions to outpatient services with heroin/opioid diagnosis in less than two years and experienced an inpatient rehabilitation services admission rate for 2017 of over 97 percent heroin/opioid diagnoses. Despite the grim statistics, the welcome and growing awareness that addiction is a chronic treatable brain disease, not unlike the chronic diseases of diabetes and asthma, and not a weakness
or moral failing provides tremendous opportunities of healing through acceptance and understanding. However, for those hoping that 2018 would be a turning point in the fight against opioids, the unfortunate reality is that we are falling further and further behind. Between 2011 and 2016, while funding to the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse has increased by approximately 50 percent, the number of opioid deaths in New York state during that period more than tripled. The 2018-2019 state budget, which was passed in the early morning hours on Saturday, provides additional funding for prevention and treatment, including: •$10.6 million in capital funding for the acquisition of property, design, construction and/or rehabilitation of facilities to expand substance abuse support and services, including treatment, recovery and prevention services. • $3.8 million for the development and implementation of substance use disorder treatment in local jails; and • $1.5 million for the creation of an Independent Substance Use Disorder and Mental Health Ombudsman to assist individuals in receiving appropriate health insurance coverage. However, while a $100 million new surcharge on opioid manufacturers to help cover the state’s costs for statefunded drug and alcohol treatment programs was part of the state budget, it is disappointing that the majority of these funds, as the budget was passed, will not combat the opioid and heroin crisis in this fiscal year. The increased awareness of the epidemic, now reinforced with new state funding, provides all of us as citizens a further opportunity to contact our legislators and thank them for their votes on these critical bills, but also to encourage them to work towards securing the full $100 million opioid manufacturer surcharge for treatment and prevention in this fiscal year. Substance abuse provider agencies in the North Country need the support of individuals throughout the North Country to both advocate for continued resources for substance abuse prevention, treatment, and recovery and to enhance the notion that working to reduce the stigma of addiction, and supporting individuals and families in recovery, will lead to healthier individuals and stronger families and communities throughout the North Country. ■ — Bob Ross is the president and CEO of St. Joseph’s Addiction Treatment and Recovery Centers.

Ti home leveled by flames Ticonderoga couple left homeless by horrific fire By Lohr McKinstry STA FF W RITER
TICONDEROGA | Fire of unknown origin destroyed a Ticonderoga home and killed a family pet. Firefighters arriving on scene reported “heavy black smoke showing” at 537 Route 9N (Hague Road), a house owned by Dale and Debbie Rafferty. The fire was reported just before noon on March 27, and efforts to rescue the Rafferty’s dog, Jack, were unsuccessful. No one was home when the fire began, although Mr. Rafferty, a contractor, was working nearby, Ticonderoga Volunteer Fire Department Chief Matt Watts said. “We were on scene within five minutes, and it was fully involved when we got there,” the chief said. “You could see through the walls, (because) the fire had burned so much.” The house, which is insured, burned to the ground during the fire. The Raffertys declined assistance from the North Country Chapter of the American Red Cross, and are staying with other family members while looking for a home to rent. The fire was called in to 911 by a neighbor who saw the flames. Fire companies from Ticonderoga, Chilson, Hague and Putnam all went to the scene. Crown Point stood by at Ti-

conderoga’s station, and Port Henry and Addison, Vt., were at Crown Point’s station. Route 9N was closed down around the fire for several hours. The Essex County Fire Investigation Unit is probing the cause of the fire, and Essex County Emergency Services Director Donald Jaquish said no determination has yet been made. Watts said it was difficult to assess the remains of the home. “There was so much damage that we couldn’t even get in to look at anything,” he said. “The floor’s gone. Everything is basically in the basement now.” A backhoe was being brought in to clear debris on the site. No injuries were reported fighting the fire. A family friend posted this on social media two days after the fire: “Debbie and Dale Rafferty would like to thank everyone for their outpouring of support and love. Please continue to keep them in your prayers as they continue to mourn for the loss of their faithful companion, Jack.” ■ The home of Dale and Debbie Rafferty on the Hague Road in Ticonderoga was leveled by a fast-spreading fire. Hancock House in Ti will feature ‘1968’ Items are needed for a new exhibit on U.S. history By Lohr McKinstry STA FF W RITER
TICONDEROGA | It was a pivotal year in U.S. history and the Ticonderoga Historical Society would like area resi-
dents to help with an upcoming exhibit by loaning photos and other personal items from 1968. “Fifty years ago, we lived through a year that was highlighted by important, and in some cases tragic events that helped shape our lives,” said society President William Dolback. “We want to see items that help interpret the lives of people in our region during that year.” He said photographs from weddings, graduations, family events, military service or other occasions are sought. Mem-
orabilia including concert ticket stubs, political convention passes, clothing and other ephemera can also be loaned. Items may also be copied, if necessary, if the original can’t be loaned. To discuss the loan of items or ask questions, call 518585-7868 or email tihistory@bridgepoint1.com. The exhibit “50 Years from Today – How 1968 Changed Your Life” will open on Friday, June 8 and remain in place through the year. ■

Chamber gets a makeover By Lohr McKinstry STA FF W RITER
PORT HENRY | The Moriah Chamber of Commerce offices are in for remodeling this spring. The offices on Main Street in Port Henry are being repainted, in soft teal and beige, chamber President Renee Anderson said. Minor repairs will also be made, and “Welcome” and “Store” signs created to hang on the walls. The chamber sells a variety of local items, including Tshirts. The office also serves as a tourist information center. “The project will begin the last week in March,” Anderson said. “It should be done in two weeks total time.” The chamber will still be open during that period.
IP GRANT
Chamber aide Cathy Sprague said they’ve been notified the chamber has received two grants, $1,000 from Stewart’s (Shops) Holiday Match and $798 from the International Paper Foundation. The money from IP will be used to reorder the popular Moriah Challenge hiking patches that are offered to individuals who hike a designated five

mountains and trails in the town. The hikes are to Belfry Mountain, Big Hollow/Coot Hill, Cheney Mountain and Crowfoot Pond.
MARK THE CALENDAR
Anderson said they’ve set July 15 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. as Champ Day this year. The celebration in honor of the legendary Lake Champlain monster will again have Champ search expert Katy Elizabeth in attendance. All events will be at the Port Henry waterfront, Anderson said. She said this year’s Labor Day Parade will include a 5K and children’s footrace for the first time. The race will start just before the parade.
‘YOU’VE BEEN FLOCKED’
The chamber’s You’ve Been Flocked fundraiser is off to a good start, Anderson said, with two sign-ups so far. The chamber charges $25 to place a flock of plastic pink flamingos on someone’s yard in the town, then that person can pay to have them moved to another lawn. The cost is $25 per home. “We have our ‘You’ve Been Flocked’ sign in,” Anderson said. The sign will also be placed on the lawn to indicate it’s a chamber fundraiser. The first family to be flocked was James Curran on Edgemont Road, done recently on his birthday. ■

Doll helps child through surgery Little Aubrey Lake has her own American Girl doll By Lohr McKinstry STA FF W RITER
TICONDEROGA | A little girl getting surgery in Boston is a lot happier there with her new American Girl doll with her. Ticonderoga Elks Lodge 1494 Youth Chairman Margie Hurlburt and Lake’s friend, Ellee Burho, donated an American Girl Baby Doll to Aubrey Lake, a 5-yearold girl who will be having surgery on her hip sockets that were replaced and have since crumbled. “Ellee is the young lady that asked me to
help get the American Girl dolls two years ago,” Hurlburt said. “She just wanted to help kids that may need or want a doll, to help little kids that are afraid.” Lake is in Boston Children’s Hospital for the surgery. The daughter of Jennifer and Cory Lake of Ticonderoga, she is undergoing surgery in Boston to replace both hip sockets. She will be in a spica cast for eight weeks, then in a spica brace for up to a year while she learns to walk all over again. “She was very happy to get the doll,” Hurlburt said. Obituaries
MORIAH | Kathryn Musso Lacey of Moriah passed away on March 20, 2018 at Elizabethtown Community Hospital, where she was treated with great compassion in her final days. Kathryn was born in Newark, New Jersey on April 27, 1923, the daughter of John and Filippina Musso. She spent a year of her childhood in the place she loved so dearly, the island of Sicily, the place of her parents birth. After graduating from high school she attended Montclair State Teachers College and also worked for the government during World War II. Teaching would be the foundation during her long journey through life. It was more than just a job — it was her passion; even when she married Paul Lacey on Sept. 24, 1954, the ceremony was in the evening (after school, of course!) How many post graduate institutions did she attend? Too many to count — she was always keen to learn more. She got her masters degree in education and psychology from SUNY Plattsburgh and in one of her proudest achievements, attended Oxford University on the Treadwell Scholarship in the summer of 1991. Kathryn had so many interests, vast and varied. Shakespeare, Emily Dickinson, women’s rights, women in literature, all things Sicilian, art, music, creative writing, languages (she spoke four), cooking, baking, high tea (she ran two tea rooms, one in Moriah and another for several winters on Jekyll Island). She was so good at many things, perhaps her proudest moments came when the potential she saw and cultivated in those many, many students blossomed and those students returned to thank her for her persistence EXPIRES SOON:

and her belief in them. That was always her great reward. Family was always important. Kathryn grew up in New Jersey and spent summers on the Jersey Shore with her parents, cousins, aunts and uncles. Yes — she was a Jersey Girl! She kept in touch with all the relatives, even after moving to Moriah in 1969 with her husband and children. She would call the cousins in Sicily too, almost every week. She was proud of her heritage and made the journey back to Sicily on several occasions: once with her father in his later years and once with her beloved grandson Christopher. She would always remark how amazing it was that her grandson would rather go to Italy with his grandmother than to spend spring break with his friends. Kathryn was predeceased by her parents and her husband of 60 years, Paul. She leaves behind her children — daughter, Lisa (Tom) Scorsome of Moriah, and son, Michael (Valerie) Lacey of Orlando, Florida; grandson, Christopher Lacey (and his fiancée Madeline Sego) of Bloomington, Indiana; sister, Jean Lamont of West Lake Village, California; nephew, John Lamont of Santa Monica, California; her beloved cat Frankie; as well as many friends who were also considered family. At Kathryn’s request there will be no services and her ashes will be scattered in the Mediterranean Sea. For those who wish to celebrate Kathryn’s life there will be a gathering of remembrance at her home on April 15 from 1-3 p.m. Donations can be made in her name to the Town of Moriah Ambulance Squad, the North Country SPCA, or your local library. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wilcox & Regan Funeral Home of Ticonderoga. To offer online condolences, please visit wilcoxandreganfuneralhome.com. ■

Gail and David then made a remarkable change of lifestyle in 1984 when they moved their young family to Nantucket where they renovated the “Nantucket Landfall.” For 19 years they owned and operated the inn and enjoyed all the friends they made, both the guests and the colleagues who helped them run the inn. After their life on Nantucket, they enjoyed a retirement in the Adirondacks. Several years ago, David and Gail moved to Newport and enjoyed more time with their young grandchildren. Gail was known for her graceful combination of selflessness, generosity and humor. She was always genuinely interested in hearing about others, offering help, and remained witty through her recent illness. She is survived by her two children, David Dickinson More of Beverly, Massachusetts and Dana More Spring of Newport, Rhode Island; a daughter in law, Melissa More and son in law Mark Spring; a sister in law Nancy Slater and her wife Joan Cain of Charleston, South Carolina, and four grandchildren, Morgan Spring, William Spring, Harrison More and Cameron More. North Country Ministry plans spring gala Live auction, community dinner to raise money for local organization
NORTH CREEK | North Country Ministry will host its biggest annual fundraiser on May 2. The North Country Ministry Spring Gala, “An Evening in Paris,” will be held Friday, May 2 at Hiland Park Country Club in Queensbury, starting at 6 p.m. The event includes hors d’oeuvre and dinner, inspired live and silent auctions, raffles and in keeping with the Parisian theme, a presentation of clothing styles from local retailers. Auctioneer Martin Seelye will run the live auction and throughout the evening, caricature artist John Gurney will be on hand for the enjoyment of guests. Tickets are $60 per person and the deadline for reservations has been extended to Sunday, April 27. With an expansion to North Country Ministry’s Warrensburg building due to be completed soon, the funds raised by the gala will help finance services that are being offered both in Warrensburg and through the or-
ganization’s site in North Creek. The breadth of North Country Ministry’s reach is illustrated by the number of individuals served each month in an area of northern Warren County and the Adirondacks that is nearly 650 square miles. In March, for example, North Country Ministry assisted 44 families with heating. Within one two-day period, 11 families had approached the organization for help with heating their homes, according to Rebecca Bammert, the organization’s case worker. Across all services offered by North Country Ministry, well over 1,000 people were aided in March. The Baby’s Place, which supplies freshly laundered clothing for infants and toddlers, as well as diapers, formula and other necessities, was also busy in March at both North Country Ministry locations. With 146 client visits in that month, the Baby’s Place saw an increase of over 50 percent from just the previous month, Bammert said. The gala is an opportunity for neighbors to help neighbors. “North Country Ministry has always considered itself a hand of hope to those in need,” said Executive Director Jill Harrington in a
statement. “The annual spring gala traditionally attracts our generous supporters from all over Warren County and even beyond who, through this event, reach out that hand of hope in a very tangible way.” Wine baskets, tickets to area activities, gift certificates to local eateries and handmade items reflecting our region are sure to spark interest in the gala’s silent auction, which will take place during the cocktail hour. The live auction will feature a weekend in Old Montreal, a week in a home on Lake George, a generous gift certificate to the Sagamore Resort, and golf in Cooperstown with an overnight stay at the Cooper Inn, among many other items and getaways. “This is such an important fundraiser for North Country Ministry. The number of people who come together to volunteer their time or donate to the organization through the gala is truly impressive,” said gala chairperson Dr. James Morrissey, who is also president of the Board of Directors. “Considering the number of people North Country Ministry has served this past winter alone, you can see how vital our services are to the communities we serve.” Proceeds of the fundraiser will benefit all services based offered by North Country Min-
istry, including supportive counseling services, advocacy and referral, the Baby’s Place activities including a play group and parenting support, the infant and toddler car seat program, and the emergency assistance fund. In addition, North Country Ministry offers a food pantry, lunch and hospitality through the Gathering Place, the Family Clothing Center and the Furniture Barn which provides clients with gently used furniture and household goods. Major underwriters and sponsors for the event include: Stafford Carr & McNally, James and Kay Morrissey, Barton International, Hudson Headwaters Health Network, Cronin’s Golf Resort, Behan Communications, Glens Falls National Bank and Trust Company, Trustco Bank, Community Bank NA, Steve and Sandi Parisi, Gary and Charleen Bivona, Lake George RV Park, Law Office of John B. Pohl, and Edward Jones/Carl Cedrone. Media sponsors are Denton Publications and Regional Radio Group. For reservations to “An Evening in Paris,” contact Charleen Bivona at 518-240-6013 or email at cmbivona@aol.com. Invitations may be downloaded at the organization’s web site at northcountryministry.org/spring-gala.html and used to secure reservations by mail. ■
