SHATNER ARRIVES TO MEET FANS
Actor William Shatner was a hit in Ticonderoga
At 98, Ken Hyatt still runs his Port Henry barbershop

PORT HENRY | It was 1950 when Kenneth Hyatt decided it was time to open his own barbershop in downtown Port Henry. On April 30, he turned 98 and that shop at 4301 Main St. is still open and he’s still inside cutting hair. At a community birthday celebration sponsored by the Moriah Chamber of Commerce, Hyatt reflected on how barbering has changed in the 70 years he’s been doing it. “I still have my regulars,” he said. “Nobody under 40 gets their hair cut at a barbershop anymore, no kids, they go to a beauty parlor.” Most haircuts are now delivered at a hair salon, he mused. “The women (stylists) messed it up when they started cutting hair,” he said. “They put a lot of barbers out of business.” » Barbershop Cont. on pg. 15

MORIAH | Winds of up to 73 miles-anhour knocked out power and caused extensive damage in Moriah and northern Essex County on May 4. A tree that fell in the Putnam Pond State Campground in Ticonderoga resulted in the death of a Tupper Lake woman. Parts of Moriah, Elizabethtown, Westport and Willsboro lost power after the late night storm, but most electrical service was expected to be restored by May 7. Dozens of trees came down on wires or fell across roads, with fire departments working into Saturday morning to clear them.
Moriah Tow n Super v isor Thomas Scozzafava said he’s been in contact with National Grid. “They are restoring power as fast as they can, and additional crews are also here in our area as well as private contractors,” he said. “This storm caused extensive damage to the power line infrastructure and NG is hoping to have power restored by sometime (Monday).” At least 20,000 homes and businesses lost electricity in Clinton, Essex and Franklin counties. The phones were dead in much of Essex County through May 6. Many fire companies staffed stations with both firefighters and emergency medical responders, and people needing help were asked to go directly to the stations. Thunderstorms rolled across the region, bringing heavy rain and strong winds, with dangerous downdrafts that wreaked havoc, said Peter Banacos, forecaster with the National Weather Service in Burlington. » Storm Cont. on pg. 7

TICONDEROGA | It was the captain back on the bridge as William Shatner arrived at the Star Trek Original Series Set Tour over the weekend. The actor who played Starship Enterprise Captain James T. Kirk on the 1966-69 television series was in Ticonderoga for two days of interaction with fans of the three-season science-fiction series. Shatner’s appearance, promoted as “Captain on the Bridge – the William Shatner Weekend,” was booked through efforts of super-fan James Cawley, who owns the CBS-licensed Original Series Set Tour. Cawley picked Shatner up at Burlington International Airport the day before his appearance at the studio. “He said, ‘I’m hungry. Where can we get a burger?’” Fans of the “Star Trek” TV series wait for a chance to see Cawley related. “We took him to Church Street (Market- William Shatner, the actor who played Capt. James T. The concept is now in its latest incarnation with “Star Trek: Discovery” on CBS All Access. Cawley began building the sets in 1997 after receiving a copy of the NCC-1701 blueprints from a designer on the original show. First used to make “Star Trek” fan films, the sets are now a tourist attraction in downtown Ticonderoga. ■

Solo show features animal watercolors Artist Merribeth Elling is at Downtown Gallery By Lohr McKinstry STA FF W RITER
TICONDEROGA | The Downtown Gallery show opening at 5 p.m. on Friday, May 18, “Faces of Hope,” will include watercolors of animals created by Merribeth Elling. Elling is a Ticonderoga resident and physical therapist at Moses Ludington Hospital. She painted her pieces of art while she was having cancer treatments at UVM Medical Center in Burlington and staying at Hope Lodge, thus “Faces of Hope” became the title. Elling said she was diagnosed with breast cancer in February 2017. “I just passed the one year mark and received a clean report on my mammogram,” she said. “I received the best care at UVM in Burlington for surgery, chemo and radiation. During the six weeks of radiation (treatment), I stayed at

Elling began painting more than 30 years ago, first in oil while taking adult school classes, then in watercolor with Kathy Becker at Silver Bay Conference Center during summer vacations doing landscapes and flowers. This is Elling’s first solo show. Ticonderoga Arts is a group of local area artists and supporters of the arts who formed in 2008 and merged in 2014 with the Downtown Gallery. The gallery is on Montcalm Street next to the Burleigh Luncheonette. ■

Gary Emery
he supported and loved his eight siblings, cradled all 24 nieces and nephews and was a loving, generous son-in-law to Connie Sinkway and caring brother-in-law to Robin’s siblings, Dave, Jody, and Diane. He was predeceased by his friend and father-in-law Bob Sinkway. ■
SILVER BAY | Gary Emery, 62, of Glen Rock, New Jersey and Silver Bay died Nov. 24, 2017 from complications following a successful heart and kidney transplant. His life was full of adventure, risk-taking, generosity and hard work. He was one of nine children who, as a 14 year old, helped to support his mom and raise his siblings after his father’s unexpected death. He married his high school classmate, Robin Sinkway, and 40 years later they still rarely agreed on anything, except that their love was unbreakable and that they were meant to be together forever. Gary was employed at Oestreicher Construction Corporation of New York City since 1981, where he rose from construction laborer to company president. He successfully navigated the company through fluctuating economies and elevated them to a highly respected position in the New York construction industry. An avid golfer and boater, he summered at his wife’s family home at Silver Bay on Lake George. He was a brilliant poker player, reader, generous supporter at fundraisers (he loved a live auction), and coach of young athletes. But his most wonderful accomplishments were being a husband and a father. He was their rock, their foundation of love, and is greatly missed. Gary leaves his best friend and wife Robin; daughter Meg; son Zach and his wife, Katie, and their daughter Parker;

TICONDEROGA | The Ticonderoga Area Chamber of Commerce plans to expands its services and programs as summer approaches. “We’re truly honored to continue to serve, market, and promote our members, partners, and the entire Ticonderoga area to the best of our ability,” said Ticonderoga Area Chamber of Commerce President/CEO Matthew Courtright. “As our membership and partnerships grow, so will the member benefits, services, programs, events, and leadership we provide. Thoughts from Behind the Pressline
Trust but verify
“Trust but verify” was a term that was coined back in 1986 in a speech given by President Ronald By Dan Alexander Reagan as he was • PUBLISHER • preparing for talks with Mikhail Gorbachev. Now, some 30-plus years later, the practice is plain common sense, not only for world leaders, but also for ordinary people doing everyday tasks. There are so many scams, careless errors, and companies with selfish motives that it serves us all to be on guard, even when dealing with those we have long deemed trustworthy. In the business world, we run into these situations all too often, especially as personnel or ownership changes. While you can understand and forgive an honest mistake, some honest mistakes can find their way into becoming a valuable money maker, especially when the original error has successfully flown under the radar. Which brings us back to Mr. Reagan’s original point to Mr. Gorbachev which was, I have complete trust in everything you tell me so long as I can validate the information as absolutely accurate. That’s where we find ourselves today, in a world that has limited safeguards and transactions taking place across the internet with unknown individuals who may or may not be who or what they pretend to be. Salespeople, politicians and attorneys tend to be the least trusted in our society, but clearly, you should never trust anyone without verification. Coming from an advertising sales organization, I can assure you we love nothing more than being asked to prove our claims. From circulation numbers to sales statistics, we respect your right to make us back up our claims. Any organization or individual that balks at providing proof of their service should become an untrusted source and anyone claiming to be above reproach has shown their true colors. With any transaction, when in doubt ask a trusted friend or family member for a little help. A third, non-interested party, can help to remove you from an awkward situation by providing a short break from the encounter and allow you to walk away from making an error when being pressured. Additionally, no invoice should ever get paid without questioning the details and making sure exactly what you are purchasing. This practice is especially important in larger companies where the person paying the bill is not the person that places the order. Trust but verify is simply a smart practice in all walks of life. ■

Where’s the infrastructure bill? Inspiration often comes from unlikely places. Like this week, when our car hit a pothole in downtown Plattsburgh and the check engine light came on. We’ve long said infrastructure isn’t sexy. But our crumbling roadways, bridges, waterways, seaports, sewer lines and public school buildings are facing a crisis. According to the 2017 Infrastructure Report Card released by the American Society for Civil Engineers, America’s infrastructure is rated a D+. The City of Plattsburgh is broke and the rest of our municipalities aren’t exactly swimming in cash. Nationwide, the fi x is projected to cost at least $1.6 trillion above current levels, and crumbling infrastructure costs the economy nearly $200 billion annually, according to a report by U.S. Senate Democrats. We’re not the only ones paying attention. Residents at a town hall in Moriah last month implored Rep. Elise Stefanik to take action, citing their deteriorating surroundings. But Congress continues to do nothing. Stefanik held out hope last month that a federal infrastructure plan from the White House may still be possible. “We have a president that is focused on infrastructure and likes to build things,” she shrugged. President Donald Trump ran on infrastructure. It was one of his most-repeated campaign promises as he careened towards the White House.

Thank you for Route 30 road repairs
To the Editor: As a lifelong resident of Long Lake, I would like to thank state Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Hamilton County Highway Department for cooperating to repair a dangerous condition on Route 30 without disrupting our lives and commerce other than adding a few extra minutes to travel from Long Lake to Tupper Lake. Originally the Sabattis (with an “a”) Circle Road was the state highway linking Long Lake and Tupper Lake. The telephone lines still go that way. Children of families residing at Whitney Headquarters on Little Tupper Lake were transported to school via school bus. At that same time, log trucks also traveled the Sabattis Road.

But 16 months into his term, “Infrastructure Week” has become a punchline in Washington, where his administration teeters from scandal to scandal and Republicans have a thin record of accomplishments despite controlling Congress and the White House: No immigration bill, no updated health care plan, no infrastructure fi x. Trump in February called for spending $200 billion in federal money to leverage some $1.5 trillion from all levels of government and the private sector over 10 years. The details didn’t strike us as particularly salivating, largely due to its reliance on tax credits and other unspecified incentives to private investors. But nonetheless, it was something. Congress, however, appeared to quickly lose its appetite. Lawmakers kicked the can down the road by raising spending on infrastructure by more than $10 billion as part of the 2018 omnibus bill, but sprinkling it throughout different funding streams. We’ve drawn attention to this issue as recently as last summer, but it bears repeating now that construction season is again underway. Nearly every Adirondack town is in the process of tackling large-scale water and sewer projects, but we don’t have the population base to bankroll projects through user fees and tax hikes. And that’s to say nothing of state and federal-owned infrastructure. While the state has been a champ at providing grant funding — including the governor’s initiative which has funded critical upgrades at Plattsburgh International Airport
The drivers of 18-wheelers are professionals and probably the safest drivers on the road. There is no more wildlife on the Sabattis Road than on Route 30. They are probably safer due to the lower speed limit. There are no more wet lands on the Sabattis Road, compared to Route 30, so wildlife will not be impacted because of the detour. The birds will be able to mate. My wife commuted daily for 40 years to Tupper Lake and would not have minded the inconvenience of the detour other than leaving a little earlier for work. I realize there may be some damage to the Sabattis Road from the heavy vehicles due to frost coming out of the road. I am sure that was taken under consideration and repairs will be made. They have chosen the optimum time to complete this project before increased traffic in the summer. Kudos to Acting DOT Commissioner Peter Karas, Regional

— the federal government has been largely absent as a willing partner. The push appears to be dead in the water as lawmakers pivot to this fall’s midterm elections. Trump said as much at a recent Ohio rally, and blamed Democrats for not working with him. It’s political brinkmanship at its most typical: Politicians spin and the public loses. A long-term infrastructure fi x will be costly, but Congress should find the mettle to make it happen. Yes, Stefanik has proven to be apt at steering funds to the district in one-off packages — a cool $500,000 to the Town of Plattsburgh through the Regional Northern Border Commission comes to mind — but we think she should use her clout with House leadership to do more. No one likes raising taxes or fees, but we can think of a half-dozen ideas now to generate revenue — including ideas mentioned by Senate Democrats in their report, including closing tax loopholes. Others revenue-raisers are more unpalatable, including a proposed increase in the federal gas tax, which we think North Country residents are ill-equipped to shoulder. Infrastructure is an issue tied directly to the economic development of our region, and should be prioritized by Congress. Doing so could be a tangible legacy that Congress and the White House, in particular, can do more than simply perpetuate their own existence at the expense of the working class people of this country. — The Sun Editorial Board ■

then most of those demanding the Second Amendment repeal and confiscation of all guns. Also, now that you are admitting to being a gun owner, be prepared to be assaulted and accused of being responsible for all deaths with guns. You will be charged with having blood on your hands, not caring about children, and even being a murderer. These are some of the charges being laid at the feet of law-abiding NRA members. All four million of them. So far as protection against intruders and other threats, you won’t find these stories in the mainstream newspapers. A recent study found that the use, or threat of use of a gun, has been used over two million times in the last couple of years to protect oneself against assault. Every month, the NRA magazines have verifiable reports where people have protected themselves or others with a gun. It does happen! Edward Binder, Athol ■

Garden better with climate change
The Carillon Garden Club will hear from a Master Gardener By Lohr McKinstry STA FF W RITER
HAGUE | “Gardening for Climate Change” will be the subject of the next Carillon Garden Club program on Thursday, May 17 at 11 a.m. at the Hague Community Center on Route 8 in Hague. Master Gardener, club member and featured speaker Diane O’Connor will present the program on global climate change, “Yes, our climate is changing but it’s not all bad news,” O’Connor said. “Wise gardeners will want to understand these changes and the effect they will have on their own gardens and landscapes.” The public is welcome and O’Connor said everyone can learn about what to expect in coming years and the best practices to ensure a lush, low maintenance garden. O’Connor has been a Master Gardener with the Cornell Cooperative Extension in Warren County since 2011. She is a lifelong gardener and is a frequent speaker on both the practical aspects and aesthetics of gardening. In addition to her volunteer activities, she is employed as the managing director at the Ticonderoga Historical Society. After the program, the club will take a break for a bring-

Essex County moves toward appeal of FOIL decision County signals it may take ballot case to state’s highest court By Keith Lobdell STA FF W RITER
ELIZABETHTOWN | The state Supreme Court Appellate Division ruled last month voters may obtain electronic voting records without a court order. But Essex County may appeal the decision to the state’s highest court. Lawmakers voted in an 11-7 motion on
Monday to give Essex County Attorney Dan Manning, Essex County Republican Board of Elections Commissioner Allison McGahay and Democratic Board of Elections Commissioner Sue Montgomery Corey the ability to file paperwork reserving the right to file an appeal at a later date. “We have to file the paperwork by the end of this week,” Manning said. The state Supreme Court Appellate Division, Third Department ruled last month state Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) covers electronically scanned images of ballots taken from voting machines, and the data should not be shielded from disclosure. The ruling came after Essex County Democratic Party Chairman Bethany Kosmid-
er sued over her denied FOIL request for access to the voting records following the 2015 local elections. The Essex County Board of Supervisors is not a party in the litigation. “I feel good because more people voted in my favor — in the people’s favor — then they did last week,” said Kosmider. “I just think this shows they are still undecided.” Preston tried to keep the meeting moving forward, saying he felt the matter needed little talk and just and an up-down vote. But Chesterfield Supervisor Gerald Morrow and Moriah Supervisor Tom Scozzafava said they opposed an appeal. “This is just a delay tactic to get money
from the county in the future,” Morrow said. “I swore to represent the voters but also the taxpayers of Essex County.” Morrow said legal costs have reached $26,000, and an appeal could push that number into the $40,000 range. “We have all sorts of things we can spend taxpayer money on besides this frivolous lawsuit,” he said. Scozzafava cited an advisory opinion by Bob Freeman, executive director of the state Committee on Open Government, that said the records should be made public. “The (state) legislature is going to address this and they should,” Scozzafava said. “I don’t think Essex County should fall on the sword for this.” ■

TICONDEROGA | The Ticonderoga Montcalm Street Partnership has named two new board members as the downtown Ticonderoga organization prepares for new projects. Portia Burke from the Country Florist and Gifts and Penny Monjeau from the Ticonderoga Natural Foods Co-Operative, both Montcalm Street business representatives, recently joined the Montcalm Street Partnership Board of Directors. The Montcalm Street Partnership has been expanding with new board members representing more downtown businesses and organizations. “We’re thrilled to welcome Portia and Penny as the newest additions to the Ticonderoga Montcalm Street Partnership Volunteer Team,” partnership Promotions Committee Chair John Bartlett said. “The Montcalm Street Partnership is working hard to serve Ticonderoga and the downtown business district. We’re excited for the continued growth of the Montcalm Street Partnership through new board members, our committees, and our partnership with the chamber.” He said he believes 2018 will be another active, productive year for Montcalm Street Partnership. “We’ll be hosting a number of events and implementing several projects,” he said. Business owners or community members interested in serving on the board, a committee, or volunteering can call 518 585-6619. Volunteers are always needed for events and committees, Bartlett said. One major partnership project is the annual Ticonderoga Streetfest, which closes off Montcalm Street for a day of live music, street vendors, food stands and entertainment. ■ Portia Burke (right) from the Country Florist and Gifts and Penny Monjeau (left) from the Ticonderoga Natural Foods Co-Op recently joined the Montcalm Street Partnership Board.

Dance show is look back in Ti
Dancing to Then and Now is event theme By Lohr McKinstry STA FF W RITER
TICONDEROGA | The upcoming show for Gunning Dance Family and Fitness Studio will be a half century leap back in time. Studio owner Jennie Lou Gunning said she’s dedicating her 5th-annual show to Norma Strong Sage, who died last year, and who operated a dance studio in Ticonderoga for many decades. “She’s been the legacy of dance here for 50 years,” Gunning said. “I’m doing the show in her name this year. We’re opening with an old-time performance by Gene Kelly, ‘Singing in the Rain.’” The theme is “Dancing to Then and Now” and will include elements of an old-time circus, along with numbers by Kelly and Elvis Presley.
The show is Friday, May 18 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the newly-restored historic Ticonderoga High School auditorium. Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 students and senior citizens and age 5 and under are free. Call 518-585-6781 for more information. There will also be fundraiser drawings and gift baskets, along with water sales, at the opening. The auditorium was reconstructed with a new sound system, restored seats and historic chandelier, Gunning said, with the effort including financial support from the community. Gunning said she has 60 students whose ages range from 2 to 70. “They’re working hard,” she said. “There are so many talents that will be on display. It’s been quite the project. “We’re doing ‘Phantom of the Opera’ next year, and that’s been a long project, with 1929 the date.” Gunning has three choreographers for the show: Heidi Karkusky, Gayle Wells, and Louise Goodwin. Each will handle different aspects of the performance. “We’re keeping up Norma’s legacy,” Gunning said. “She’s missed. It will be dedicated to her.” ■

Moses Ludington nurses adapt to changes
Ticonderoga hospital’s emergency section was redesigned By Lohr McKinstry STA FF W RITER
TICONDEROGA | Lots of changes came with the recent takeover of Moses Ludington Hospital by University of Vermont Health Network-Elizabethtown Community Hospital. Nurses at Moses Ludington had to adapt to new software and routines, but their rebuilt emergency department came online at the same time, Chief Nursing Officer Julie Tromblee, MSN, RN said. “Now we’re getting used to more space, better lighting,” she said. “There’s a dedicated equipment room.” Poor lighting and lack of windows made the old ER look dingy, she said. What helped was getting the staff involved in the design of the new emergency department. “The staff helped move things into the new ER, then they

lived in the space and the nurses made changes,” Tromblee said. “They had ideas for greater efficiency.” Charge Nurse Karen Griffin, RN has worked at Moses Ludington since 2007. “It’s so bright and open,” she said “It’s lovely. The new computer system is better; that’s a plus. It’s taking less time.” Nurses can now do bedside registration of a patient, she said, with computer terminals that pull right up. “The rooms are set up for easier access,” she said. “We have a triage room now. It seems quieter, more professional, more modern and up-to-date.” With the change in medical software, all the hospitals in the University of Vermont Health Network have the same system and can interchange information, something that wasn’t possible before when different programs were in use. Charge Nurse Michael Taylor, RN, just started at Moses Ludington, but has been a nurse for 22 years. “I vacationed here as a kid,” he said. “We moved here from California and I started in the new ER. I was already familiar with the area.” He said each day in the emergency department is different. “You never know who is going to come through the doors,” Taylor said “We get a variety of patients. We have a good team. “The new ER is spacious. We’re getting good feedback from folks coming through the ER. You have more time to spend with patients.”
Things will get busier in the emergency department over the summer, he said, as people vacation or move to seasonal homes around Lake George. Nurse Manager Julie LaMotte, RN said they’ve gotten letters from patients praising the new emergency department. “We have testimonials from patients who had been in the old ER and now the new ER,” she said. “It opened up the opportunity for patient-centered care. There’s increased patient safety and environment. The patients are brought right to a bed. Rooms are set up identically; cabinets are arranged the same. It’s better continuity.” Previously, patients might have to remain on a gurney if a room wasn’t available in the small space the emergency department occupied. Charge Nurse Erin Vlamis, RN, has been a nurse for five years and worked in the old emergency department. “I love the new ER,” she said. “This works better, there’s sunlight through windows. It’s a collective thing, ease of care, access to supplies. It all helps.” Vlamis graduated from the registered nurse curriculum at North Country Community College. “It’s an excellent program, excellent instructors,” she said. “I always wanted to be in healthcare and here I am.” Nurses at Moses Ludington in Ticonderoga will join healthcare providers across the country in observing National Nurses Week May 6 - 12. ■

» Barbershop Cont. from pg. 1 The 1960s popularity of The Beatles also hurt barbers, he said, because many men began to wear their hair long like the members of the rock band. He said he doesn’t do as many haircuts as he once did. When his shop first opened, a haircut was 35 cents; now it’s $8. “It’s mostly gray hair,” Hyatt said. “Not much black hair. People with black hair go to the hair salon.” Men used to come in every day for a shave, he said, but that all went away as times changed. “I don’t do shaves anymore,” he said. “I used to. Some men had their own shaving cream mugs here.” Hyatt graduated from Moriah High School in 1939. A Crown Point native, he went to Tri-Boro Barber School in New York City’s Bowery district in 1948, after serving in the U.S. Army during World War II, finally coming to Port Henry in 1950 to open a shop. A visit to his business is a visit to a historic barbershop. Rows of black Naugahyde chairs line the walls, the original barber chair is still in use, and bottles of colored hair tonics sit next to electric clippers and scissors on the counter by an antique cash register. Outside, an old-time barber pole goes around when the shop is open. Hyatt played the mandolin at his party with friend Robert Scharpf, 84, on guitar. When it came time to cut his cake, baked with a barber’s theme by Laura Baker Orr of Mineville, he and Scharpf played the Happy Birthday song. “I can play that,” Hyatt said. “I enjoy playing the man-

chamber membership for all the good will he provides.” Hyatt said he has no plans to retire, and may still be cutting hair when he’s 100 years old. “I’m still having fun,” Hyatt said. ■
The Moriah Challenge returns
Four hikes and a patch are drawing visitors By Lohr McKinstry STA FF W RITER
MORIAH | It’s the 4-hike Moriah Challenge luring people on National Trails Day this year. On Saturday, June 2, the Moriah Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring the hiking day
and the reward is a commemorative patch designed by local artist Linda Smyth. The challenge promoted hikes to Belfry Mountain, Big Hollow/Coot Hill, Cheney Mountain, and Crowfoot Pond. “Thousands of individuals and organizations will offer local stewardship and recreational opportunities on National Trails Day,” Moriah Chamber Events Director Cathy Sprague said. “This year is going to be big for the Moriah Challenge because we’re celebrating the 50th anniversary of the national trail system.” She said hiking has been found to lower
risk of heart disease, improve blood sugar levels, and combat stress and anxiety. The Moriah Chamber of Commerce office at 4317 Main St. in Port Henry will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. so hikers who do all four hikes can retrieve the patches, she said. “They can also pick up a Champlain Area Trails System map to the trails at the office,” Sprague said. “People came from Canada and New York City to hike in Moriah that day last year and I’m hoping for the same this year.” Hikers who do the challenge can fill out a provided form and take it back to the chamber
office to get the patch, Sprague said. She said last year the chamber phone rang all day long with calls from people who’d just finished the challenge, asking for directions to the office to get a patch. The chamber is at 518 250-1050 or email moriahchamber@ gmail.com. All four hikes are fairly short and can easily be done in one day, Sprague said. “Many people who came to get a patch said ‘now, where can we go to eat’ and we directed them to our excellent local restaurants,” she said. “It was a great economic boost for the town.” ■

May is Hepatitis Awareness Month
MORIAH | The Champ Day celebration will be moved to the Port Henry Champ RV Park and Beach this year. The event had been held at Powerhouse Park at the Port Henry Public Boat Launch Site, but will be moved this year to keep the music, games and cardboard boat races in the same venue, Moriah Chamber of Commerce Events Director Cathy Sprague told the Moriah Town Council recently. “We’re going to have everybody at the beach from 10 to 3 (p.m.),” she said. “Last year we had the boat tournament (nearby) and had a lot of trouble with parking. If the boat tournament isn’t that day, you can park at (Powerhouse Park) and walk over.” The town owns the campground and beach.
The former chamber president, Sprague was given a certificate of appreciation by the town at the meeting. Champ Day, which celebrates the legendary Lake Champlain monster, will be July 15 this year. The board was told LeeAnn Sprague will replace Denise Daly as town account clerk at $15.56 an hour for 35 hours a week. A Civil Service exam will be held later. Sprague will work with Daly until May 11, when Daly leaves. A special Town Council meeting was set to discuss the Bulwagga Bay Town Campground project and will be Thursday, May 24 at 6 p.m. at the Town Courthouse. “We might have some investment opportunities,” Councilor Luci Carpenter said. “Things are moving quickly.” Consultant Michael Crane will make a presentation on the campground project, which seeks investors to expand the campground. A public hearing to extend the local law for moratorium on street level residential development in the former village will be held at 5:45 p.m. just before the 7 p.m. May 10 meeting. ■

Society hosts genealogy workshop Learn how to study ancestry at Hancock House By Lohr McKinstry STA FF W RITER
TICONDEROGA | Those interested in learning about their roots may be headed for the Ticonderoga Historical Society’s introduction to genealogy on Saturday, May 19. The genealogy workshop is from 10 a.m. until noon at the Hancock House, 6 Moses Circle, Ticonderoga. The workshop facilitator will be Margaret Scuderi of
Ticonderoga, field genealogist for the Daughters of the American Revolution. “Topics that will be covered during the workshop include initial research techniques, assessing and vetting source materials and on-line database research,” she said. Personal consultations will be available to participants following the workshop, Scuderi said. Inexpensive personal DNA testing has made genealogy more popular recently, as individuals learn about their makeup and site like ancestry.com offer mail in tests and on-line results. The program is offered free of charge. However, pre-registration is required and a $5 materials fee is requested to cover the cost of handouts. BUY-SELL-TRADE WithTheClassifieds
Reservations may be made by calling the Historical Society at 518-585-7868 or via email to: tihistory@bridgepoint1.com. The Ticonderoga Historical Society’s mission is the preservation and interpretation of history through its collections, programs and community outreach. ■
