Ti school board tries again New budget makes further cuts, stays within cap By Tim Rowland STA FF W RITER

TICONDEROGA | The Ticonderoga Central School Board will go back to the voters with a $22.5 million budget that stays within the tax cap by combining further spending cuts with a greater reliance on the system’s fund balance. Voters last month rejected a $23 million spending plan that exceeded the cap, but minimized cuts and put the school system on better financial footing going forward. The new plan, passed unanimously Monday, saves money by eliminating positions and by cutting supplies, professional development, groundskeeping costs and a bus run, and by reducing money for athletics programs. But it stops short of more severe cuts that had been on the table, including the elimination of sports and advanced academic classes. According to a school handout, budgetary reductions that had to be made to achieve the tax cap included three teacher positions, one cleaner and two clerical positions. Superintendent John McDonald Jr. cautioned that the cuts have not been finalized, and that Monday’s vote was just on the overall budget number of $22.5 million. The budget represents a less than a one-half-of-1 percent increase over last year’s, and raises the tax levy by 3.97 percent. To stay within the cap, the levy increase had to come in at less than 4.33 percent.

RACE CARS:

Seventh-grade technology students from Moriah Central School recently designed, created and raced their own CO2-powered dragsters. First place went to Boden Valentine, 50 feet in 0.71 seconds (48 mph); followed by, second place, Zachary Sherman, 50 feet in 0.8 seconds (42.6 mph); and third place, Vance Hickok, 50 feet in 0.81 seconds (42 mph).

Bills in parts of Moriah may skyrocket if residents don’t report income By Tim Rowland STA FF W RITER

MINEVILLE | The Town of Moriah is trying to collect income data from residents in and around Mineville and Witherbee neighborhoods, which in the future could save them a considerable amount of money on their sewer bills. But so far, the going hasn’t been easy. Board Member Matt Brassard said two

mailings have drawn a feeble response, so officials have gone door to door in search of data that will make the town eligible for up to $8 million in federal aid from three different funding sources. But that hasn’t worked as well as hoped, either. “At a couple of homes I was told to get off the property before I could open my mouth and tell them what I was doing,” Brassard said. Many aren’t home, and some who are won’t come to the door.

‘WON’T OPEN THE DOOR’

The non-response could be costly. Moriah is under government order to improve its sewer system, and will have to do the work whether it gets the help of government grants or not. Without federal grants and no-interest

skyward. Birds don’t need any help to fly. Like the kids themselves, the birds — warblers, cedar waxwings, common yellowthroats — had different personalities. “He wasn’t really scared, he just kind of looked at me,” Eli Dromgool said after releasing his new feathered friend. Landon LaVallie’s was a little more feisty. “He was biting my thumb and wouldn’t let go,” Landon said.

A beer for the ages Film documents story of lost symbol of sacrifice By Tim Rowland STA FF W RITER

PORT HENRY | Henry’s Garage, a monolithic icon in the heart of Port Henry whose cubicle facade vaguely resembles the set of the old Hollywood Squares game show, began life 108 years ago with a split personality.

The Henry family was not entirely sure about the future of the automobile, which in some circles at that point was considered to be a largely impractical novelty. But, unlike the naysayers, they could conceive of a day when the horses and carriages they sold were supplanted by mechanical wizardry. So they hedged. On the ground f loor of their new building they built stables. But upstairs they also sold the Ford Model T, along with gas, tires and the signature black paint. » Beer Cont. on pg. 7

CROWN POINT | One by one, students from St. Mary’s School in Ticonderoga came forward at an impromptu outdoor classroom at the Crown Point State Historic Site and were handed a tiny ball of fluff, a bird that had been snared in the nets of a scientific bird-banding operation. Experts taught the students how to gently cradle the birds and release them just by opening their hands, not throwing them

‘REFUELING STATION’

The bird-banding station, located within sight of the ruins of the old British fort at Crown Point, just concluded its 44th year of catching, banding and releasing songbirds and recording them in a database that can be accessed by scientists conducting academic studies. During the two-week operation it is open to school groups, civic organizations and tourists visiting the forts. » Banding Cont. on pg. 7

loans, district residents will have to pay for the work themselves, meaning their sewer bills could double or triple, Brassard said. To be eligible, the town must show that those who benefit will be predominantly low-income. Brassard said he believes the area will qualify, but it needs the documentation from a representative percentage of homes. An initial mailing got a response of only 14 percent. A follow-up mailing went to renters, who tend to be less responsive than homeowners. Surveys have been trickling in since, but the process has been painfully slow. “We’re still about 60 to 75 surveys short, which doesn’t sound like a lot, but it’s tough,” Brassard said. “You see people inside and they just won’t open the door.”

Northeast Wilderness Trust buys 2,400acre retreat By Tim Rowland STA FF W RITER

CHESTERFIELD | The North Branch of the Boquet River begins alongside a dirt Adirondack road adjacent to a former family retreat dotted with ponds and crossed by streams, where peregrine falcons nest, dragonflies swarm and beds of sage-colored lichen and pink lady slippers float amid banks of emerald moss. Aesthetics aside, the 2,434-acre tract represents a significant link in a swath of mostly protected forestland between Lake Champlain and the High Peaks where wildlife can trace its historic migratory paths uninterrupted by development. “This land has been so gently used over the years that walking around it gives you the impression of being a guest” in the wilderness, said Shelby Perry, stewardship director for the Northeast Wilderness Trust, which purchased the land for preservation as a privately held wilderness in late May. What will be known as the Eagle Mountain Wilderness Preserve is situated between the Taylor Pond Wild Forest, home to the popular Poke-o-Moonshine Mountain to the north, and the Jay Mountain Wilderness to the south. It was purchased from the Rodgers family for $1.1 million. The organization is continuing to raise funds for the project to pay for taxes and management. Accessed off Trout Pond Road, hikers in the coming weeks will be able to follow a roughly three-mile access road leading over several chattering streams to Clear Pond, where the family had their cabin. A kiosk and a small parking area will mark the trailhead, Perry said. Formal trails

Zach Porter, outreach and communications coordinator, and Shelby Perry, stewardship director for the Northeast Wilderness Trust, stand along a wetlands at the Eagle Mountain Wilderness Preserve. Photo by Tim Rowland will be developed by Champlain Area Trails (CATS) and are expected to be in place by 2020. The land will be open to non-motorized recreation, including hiking, cross-country skiing, canoeing and fishing. Hunting will be allowed by permit.

‘A BIG STEP’

It’s hoped that the tract will become a northern version of the Split Rock Wildway, a protected corridor stretching from Lake Chaplain near Essex to the Hurricane Mountain Wilderness and High Peaks. The mostly level trail to Clear Pond is rich in wildlife and offers broad views of ponds and wetlands, with an occasional mountain top poking out from among the hardwoods and red and old-growth white pines. Jack pines are also on the property, somewhat of a rarity that far to the south. Zack Porter, the trust’s outreach and communications coordinator, said the property

had been in the Rodgers family for nearly a century, and had been lightly touched save for some selected logging through the years. As part of the transitional “West Champlain Hills” between the Champlain Valley and High Peaks, it represents an ecology that is perhaps the most biologically diverse in the park. “In contrast to the great wilderness areas of the High Peaks and Lakes Country of the Central and Western Adirondacks, the easternmost region of the Adirondack Park remains underrepresented when it comes to forever-wild landscapes,” said Jon Leibowitz, executive director of Northeast Wilderness Trust. “Eagle Mountain Wilderness Preserve is a big step toward ensuring that low-elevation areas receive equal wilderness representation within the beloved Adirondacks.” According to the trust, the acquisition of Eagle Mountain will also protect more than five miles of headwater streams that feed into the North Branch of the Boquet River and

support native brook trout habitat. The high water quality also supports the Eastern Pearlshell, a rare freshwater mussel found in only a few locations in New York state and is at risk throughout its historical habitat due to water pollution and dams. The Northeast Wilderness Trust has preserved 35,000 acres, primarily in New England. The conservation easement for Eagle Mountain will be held by Adirondack Land Trust. “This project is both innovative and unique in the Adirondack Park,” Mike Carr, executive director of the Adirondack Land Trust, said in a statement. “First, this is not like other Adirondack wilderness; this is private forever-wild land that will now be opened to the public for uses that are compatible with its wilderness character. Also, the Adirondack Land Trust is just one of several partners using their different expertise to protect and manage this special place, leveraging the strengths of all involved.” ■

Acclaimed fiddlers coming to Ticonderoga Youth group has played at many top venues By Tim Rowland STA FF W RITER

TICONDEROGA | The Saline Fiddlers Philharmonic, billed as America’s premier youth fiddling show band,

is in high demand across North America, having played 1,500 concerts including gigs at the White House and Lincoln Center. So when the group called and said it wanted to perform locally, the Ticonderoga Theater Guild enthusiastically said yes. “Our tour this summer takes the group through Canada, Vermont, New York and Pennsylvania,” SFP business administrator Linda Trese said in an email. “The group enjoys visiting historical and interesting cities when on tour. As we were researching and planning our route for this tour, Ti-

conderoga was high on our list to contact. The town sounds like a fantastic place to visit.” The Saline Fiddlers, from Saline High School in Michigan, “present an energetic and polished show that features a diverse range of music from American folk, fiddle, bluegrass, jazz, western swing and Celtic traditions,” according to the group’s website. “Spirited vocals and Appalachian step dancing (are combined) with the instrumentals to create an unforgettable live performance.” The group will perform in a free concert June 29 at 7 p.m. at the Ticonderoga High School Auditorium. “We’d like to get a big audience for this because they are special; everyone in our community can take advantage of this amazing show,” said Judy Walker, executive director of the guild, adding that she believes the group’s music dovetails nicely with the community’s tastes. The guild has arranged families for the performers to stay with, and they will get a tour of Fort Ticonderoga while they are here. “We encouraged them to come a day early so they can see the area,” Walker said. “We’ll try to get them out in boats on the lake.” The performers are remarkable not just for their music, but for their ethic. They run their own show and create their own arrangements. Their website says, “the group is a brilliant example of what students can and will achieve if given adult direction but also the opportunity to explore and pursue their own creative interests.” The concert is made possible in part with Department of Environmental Conservation funds from the Decentralization Program, a re-grant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Gov. Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature, and administered by the Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts. ■

Opinion

Thoughts from Behind the Pressline

And the survey says... We’ve witnessed some remarkable changes in the media landscape over the last decade. Quoting from an article By Dan Alexander appearing in the Wall Street • PUBLISHER • Journal last week, “All the companies have struggled over the past decade with steep advertising and print readership declines. This year, both GateHouse and Gannett have had substantial rounds of layoffs, while McClatchy offered buyouts to hundreds of employees.” With that as a backdrop, we’ve been a part of two recent surveys. The first was a local survey of North Country residents looking for feedback on where they find their local news. This survey was conducted by Circulation Verification Council (CVC) of St. Louis, Missouri. The second survey was conducted on a national basis with media buyers by CVC in cooperation with Standard Rate and Data Service (SRDS). Clearly times are changing, and while we don’t have space to cover all the questions, I would like to share a few details. When it comes to the local news source of choice, 88.9 percent of responders selected The Sun followed by WPTZ at 46.3 percent and tied for third was the PressRepublican and WCAX at 33.3 percent. All other forms of local media were in the 20 percent range and below. When asked specifically about newspaper choices alone, The Sun ranked at 70 percent, while the Post Star, Press-Republican and Daily Enterprise all came in below 10 percent. Those numbers are no surprise considering the circulation advantage The Sun now holds. In Clinton County, The Sun is mailed to 28,963 homes, while the PressRepublican has 6,681 subscribers based on their June 2017 AAM Audit. In Essex County, The Sun is mailed to 19,375 homes, while Press-Republican June 2017 audit shows 1,367 subscribers, and the Post Star has 199 subscribers in Essex County according to their June 2018 AAM Audit. The Daily Enterprise is not audited, but their total circulation is listed on SRDS as approximately 3,600. In northern Warren County, The Sun is mailed to 13,223 homes. In the same circulation area, the Post Star has 1,009 subscribers according to their June 2018 audit. In the result of the national media buyers survey, 91 percent of media buyers say they have experienced placing ads in free community newspapers. When asked about trustworthiness, free community newspapers ranked the highest with 67 percent in the very trustworthy and trustworthy category, followed closely by paid, daily papers at 60 percent. The belief that free, community newspapers provide excellent value for advertisers was at 69 percent, and 93 percent of media buyers believe free newspapers fill a unique niche in the media mix. All positive signs moving forward. ■

Letters

Plattsburgh parking plans must be clearly defined

Editor’s note: This letter refers to Sarah Morris’ article, “Preliminary plans OK’d for Durkee Street,” which ran in the June 1 edition of The Sun. To the Editor: The June 1 article on OK’d plans for Durkee Street needs attention. The statement for planned “additional parking along Durkee Street” is nebulous and can be misleading in light of the large number of unaccounted for parking spaces required due to the Downtown Revitalization Initiative (DRI) project and growth. For example, a prudent number of these spaces required may be the sum of the 289 lost spaces, additional spaces required due to the DRI buildup at that site, anticipated parking increases due to normal growth in the city and an additional number of spaces required/lost during snow emergency events. This should be a published and finite number competent council has established and could easily be about 580 (289 + 130 + 100 + X). I have reviewed the city council minutes and Plattsburgh Parking Advisory Committee (PPAC) minutes to date and nowhere is a required target number indicated. Perhaps it is an unachievable goal, hidden in unpopular paid parking schemes, proposing to move some operations to Dock Street, ranting about increased tax revenue, the value of a costly $26 plus million dollar buildup that the tenants will have to pay for over a basic parking lot, etc. The PPAC minutes clearly indicate public opposition to the project and concern for lack of available spaces. On April 25, the official statement “The City is planning alternate parking, and plans will be in place before the developers break ground” read into the minutes. Note there is no number of spaces indicated and “plans” are not good enough to competently move forward with. If

you reside in the downtown area or own or work at a store or restaurant and eat or shop or visit there you will be paying a big price for letting this move forward. - Geoff rey B. Barker, Plattsburgh ■

Abortion laws harmful to women

To the Editor: Women’s rights and healthcare are under siege in the U.S. Fortunately, in New York the passage of the Reproductive Health Act ensures that women in New York have access to a full range of reproductive healthcare services now and in the future. Passage of Roe v. Wade in 1973 upheld a woman’s right of privacy to make her own decisions about whether and when to become a parent, including the right to access safe, legal abortion services. These personal, difficult decisions made by a woman, with guidance from her health and support network, are made within the context of the woman’s faith, health, age and circumstance. Some of us remember horror stories prior to 1973 of women suffering the consequences of an illegal or self-inflicted abortion. Then, and in the future, if states are allowed to ban abortions, an unjust two-tier system of access to abortion services will be re-established. More affluent women will be able to travel to states that protect abortion rights, while low-income women seeking an abortion will have no alternative but to attempt one themselves or seek out an illegal provider. Two options posing grave risk to women. Demonizing and intimidating women who have made the very personal decision to have an abortion shows lack of respect and understanding. Six out of the nine states that passed abortion bans this year did not include an exemption for pregnancies resulting from rape or incest. A man rapes a child or a woman and the victim will not have the choice to abort the fetus. Yet, in some of these states,

the punishment for a convicted rapist can be less than the punishment for a doctor convicted of providing the abortion. To me, these bans capsulize the misogyny running rampant in our country today. We are better than that. - Margot Gold, Saranac Lake ■

Independence Party members not Independent

To the Editor: Many voters desiring no political party affi liation unintentionally enroll in the Independence Party. Seven years ago, the New York Daily News interviewed 200 Independence Party members and found that 169 thought they were independents — not affiliated with any party. Essex County has 1,764 Independence Party members. Because of confusion over the party name, it’s possible that many of them intended to have no party affi liation. They checked what appeared to be an independent block on their registration form, but actually enrolled as an Independence Party member. The Independence Party’s platform — available here: ipny.org/platform.html — is primarily oriented toward fiscal austerity, privatization of government services and campaign reform. The party has been somewhat dormant recently but it has been active in the past, cross-endorsing other party’s candidates and attracting celebrity candidates. If you’re an unintentional Independence Party member, its very easy to change to Independent (no party affiliation) — or enroll in another party. Registration forms can be obtained at many post offices or downloaded here: co.essex.ny.us/downloads/VoterRegistrationForm.pdf - Frank Pagano, chair of the Town of Jay Democratic Committee ■

BRIEFS

TORCH RUN:

School meeting upcoming

Kuenzel will share the story of how the book came about as well as relating some of the more quirky facts and lore about the islands. The event will held June 26 at 7 p.m. at the Hague Community Center on Graphite Mountain Road. ■

PUTNAM | Putnam Central School will hold its regular monthly meeting Tuesday, June 18, at 6:30 p.m., in the gymnasium. ■

Art show to open

Free fellowship dinner announced

TICONDEROGA | The art show “Variation on a Theme” will open June 7 at Ti Arts’ Downtown Gallery from 5-7 p.m. Two artists, painter Susan Beadle and ceramic artist Seddon Beaty, will explore this theme using paint and clay. Beadle’s canvases will focus on floral and landscape images seen from different points of view in different light and in changing weather. Beaty’s pieces will take sets of familiar ceramic forms (plates, pitchers, vases, casseroles) and vary their color, size, pattern and texture. The show will remain up until June 22. The gallery is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday through Saturday. ■

TICONDEROGA | The next free fellowship dinner at the Ticonderoga First United Methodist Church will be held Sunday, June 9, in Fellowship Hall from 4:30-6 p.m. Everyone is welcome; reservations are not necessary. The menu will include a taco bar. Homemade desserts and beverages will also be available. While there is no charge, a free-will donation is appreciated. High chairs, booster seats, takeout and a child-friendly menu will be available. The church is located at 1045 Wicker St. in Ticonderoga, just up the hill from the hospital. Everyone is welcome to attend the worship services held each Sunday at 8:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. For more information, contact the church office at 518-585-7995 or visit tifumc.com. ■

TICONDEROGA | The St. Mary’s School playground will be re-dedicated June 8 at 12:30 p.m. at St. Mary’s School in Ticonderoga with a ribbon cutting ceremony. Matt Courtright will be in attendance when a plaque is installed to celebrate 60 years and to honor the memory of Evelyn Cunningham Burleigh. This event will follow the St. Mary’s School Nun Run and picnic that will take place that morning at the school. All are invited to attend. Nun run participation is open to all and registration begins at 9 a.m. ■

HAGUE | A discussion with Ginger Henry Kuenzel, organized by members of the Hague Historical Society, will reflect on Frank Leonbruno’s book “Lake George Reflections.” The book is comprised of a series of columns that Kuenzel and Leonbruno collaborated on for “The Chronicle” newspaper about the Lake George islands. At the meeting,

The annual increase to the tax bill on a $100,000 (for tax purposes) home would be $43 in Ticonderoga and $54 in Hague. STAR exemptions and rebate checks would be preserved. Along with nearly $500,000 in new cuts, the revised budget takes another $250,000 from the schools’ fund balance, which acts as a savings account. The board had hesitated to dip too deeply into savings because it was afraid that would put them behind the eight ball for budget years going forward. But year-end budget surpluses came in higher than expected, allowing the board a $450,000 cushion going into next year. “We think we’re going to be OK,” McDonald said. A public hearing on the budget will be held at the high school at 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 11, and the vote will be June 18. If this vote fails, the board would be forced to adopt a contingency budget with no increase, causing nearly another $500,000 in cuts and an end to free use of school facilities for outside activities. ■

The town needs the data by the end of July. “I hate to use the term ‘free money’ because it’s all tax dollars, but it’s going to be spent some-

where, so why not in our town?” Brassard said. There could be any number of reasons for the reluctance to cooperate, Brassard said. Hucksters are notorious for going door to door, and some might have a family or financial situation they do not want the government to know about — even though the surveys will only be used for the purpose of obtaining the grants, and will not be held

» Banding Cont. from pg. 1 Since 1976, 20,000 birds have been banded, representing more than 100 species. Master bander Gordon Howard explained to the class that Crown Point is a peninsula that’s a popular weigh station for migrating birds. “This is their refueling station; it’s the McDonald’s,” he said. Particularly noted for tiny and colorful warblers, Crown Point is rich in hawthorn trees that are feasted upon by a tiny caterpillar that is in turn feasted on by the birds. pering with their missives. “It’s amazing what the kids retain,” bander Gary Lee said. “Some of them will come back and bring their parents.” When students were given a bird to release, they filled out a card with their contact information. If the bird is caught somewhere else — maybe even hundreds of miles away — the student will receive a postcard informing them of the whereabouts of “their” feathered friend. The birds are snared in fine mesh nets and quickly transferred into a beekeeper’s hat that serves as a temporary cage. The bands are affixed with a specially modified pair of pliers. The sex and relative age of the bird are recorded in a ledger and the information painstakingly transferred into a computer log. “We have caught 875 birds so far,” Howard told the class. “That’s a lot of time in front of a computer.” ■

In seeking to have the garage, which now is home to the Port Henry Fire Department, placed on the Historic Register several years ago, Tom Henry hosted a gathering of history officials who got together for a tour to determine the building’s significance. As the entourage was preparing to do give the building a thorough assessment, Henry’s cousin Debbie turned to him and said, “Tommy, do you think that beer can is still up there? Tom looked at Debbie and said, “What beer can?” At the age of 14, Debbie had heard from her mother a heart-wrenching but improbable tale of a young man, Marc Stoddard of Mineville, who had gone off to fight in Vietnam in the late ’60s. Legend had it that he visited the garage where he had worked, along with a couple of friends, to say goodbye prior to his deployment. It was quitting time, and an impromptu party ensued, with a mechanic passing out celebratory beers. Stoddard took his, but didn’t open it. Instead, the story went, he secreted it away somewhere in the garage with the promise, “I’ll drink it when I come home.” But Stoddard did not come home. He was killed fighting for his country in Vietnam in April 1969, two months after his arrival — one of five from the community who lost their lives.

the garage that night in late 1968 died. But Henry’s Garage and the history it represented remained a topic of interest, as the fire department looked for a more suitable location, and the town talked about what would happen to the historic site once the company moved out. Along with Tom Henry, Port Henry Fire Chief Jim Hughes had an interest in the old Henry’s Garage building. “I’m always sniffing out money to preserve the building,” Hughes said. “I’m on that path and Tom’s on the family path and both paths came together.” Both had an interest in seeing the building placed on the historic register, so they were there that day in 2016 to go over the building with the architectural historians when Debbie casually mentioned the story she had heard more than 40 years prior. Naturally, it generated considerable interest, but historians are trained to be suspicious of stories that seem too good to be true. As the team made its way from the top story down, no beer can was forthcoming. Then, on the ground floor, Debbie trained her beam on an overhead girder, just as another flashlight beam joined it. “They just kind of came together at the same time,” Tom said. The cavernous building that had been filled with chatter went dead silent.

The young man was not forgotten, but the story of the beer can was. As the decades went by, most anyone that might have had first-hand knowledge of what had happened in

“In 30 years here, I never looked up,” Hughes said. There on a girder was a dingy white can with gold and red trim and the script, “Schaefer Beer.”

A documentary, “When I Come Home,” was born of that moment and the cheers that erupted after the stunned silence. The film, produced by an all-volunteer company including Tom Henry, Bill Killon and Amy Henry, has been screened throughout the region this year and was broadcast on Mountain Lake PBS over the Memorial Day Weekend. It is available for download at Vimeo. In late May, the Henry family hosted a gathering for those who were involved in the film and had a connection to the story. Marc’s brother Mike said the can represents not closure, but a vivid understanding of the sacrifice. “It brings his memory back and shows that people still care,” he said. The story is filled with remarkable footnotes and subplots that were almost never told. Because when the fire company obtained the building in 1971, where the beer can has now resided for more than half a century, a cleaning crew went through and gave it a good scrub and new paint. A member of the crew that day noticed an oddity — a beer can where a beer can had no business being. He started to throw it in the trash, but thought better of it and brought it to the attention of the man in charge of the crew, who just happened to be one of Mineville’s greatest military heroes, Medal of Honor winner Raymond “Buzz” Wright. Wright knew the story. “He said, ‘No one should touch that can,’” Henry said. “Anyone else would have swept it off the beam.” ■

Colby Lawrence Fahey

TICONDEROGA | Colby Lawrence Fahey entered into eternal rest on May 31, 2019, after a long, brave battle with cancer. Colby was born in St. Stephen, New Brunswick, Canada on Feb. 8, 1942, the son of Joseph Colby and Eloise Fahey. Colby was salutatorian of his high school class in Princeton, Maine and continued his education at the University of Maine Orono, graduating in May 1964 with a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering. Upon graduation, he moved to Ticonderoga and began a 39-year-career with International Paper Company. He retired as manager of maintenance for the paper mill and went to work part-time as an engineering consultant for Rist Frost Engineering in Glens Falls for a further nine years. Colby was a member of the Quarter Century Club and looked forward every day to coffee with many friends where the problems of the world were often settled. He met the love of his life, Susan Morrison in 1966 and they married in 1967. Together they had one cherished son, Will. They spent many summers returning to Maine to fish on the St. Croix River. Colby was an excellent woodworker. He restored their home on Streetroad and a cottage on Lake Champlain in Crown Point, building Adirondack style furniture for the camp. He also built a cedar strip canoe and restored a 19-foot “Grand Laker” canoe he got from his friend David Cox in Maine. Colby is survived by his loving wife Susan, his son William (Christine) and two grandsons, Andrew and Nathaniel. Also surviving are his sister Natalie Deschene, brother-in-law and his wife, William and Susan Morrison and by many nieces and nephews. Are you looking for Summer Employment?

Absolutely. Because lemon juice contains acid and frequent consumption can irritate gums and erode tooth enamel. Erosion of the enamel on your teeth can lead to sensitivity and tooth decay. With a high acid content, lemon juice is one of the most erosive materials you can consume. But lemons aren’t the only bad apples! Any acidic food or drink can contribute to dental erosion. Sentinels reclaim Class C crown By Keith Lobdell SPORTS EDITOR

TICONDEROGA | One year after falling in the Section VII/Class C final, the Ticonderoga Sentinels rode the wave of a nine-run second inning and stellar performance from junior Samantha Montville to reclaim the Class C title with a 20-3 win over Northern Adirondack May 30. Montville allowed only six hits over seven innings, giving up three runs and striking out four in earning the win for the Sentinels in the circle. “I really wanted to win for my team and I wanted to get this title back that we lost last year,” Montville said. “It was a total team effort and a great game,” coach Eric Mullen said regarding the fact the defense behind Montville played clean, not making a single error. “Sam did a great job hitting her marks and a big thing with her was confidence,” Mullen added. “She has had confidence and momentum from the semifinal game.” Montville also starred at the plate, going 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles, three RBI

CROWN POINT | Crown Point third baseman Sarah McIntosh started to tear up thinking about the moment. She and her sister, senior pitcher Shawna, had just delivered another Section VII/Class D title to the Panthers, as Shawna threw no-hit ball over seven innings, while Sarah drove in four of the Panthers’ six runs in a 6-0 title-clinching win against Elizabethtown-Lewis/Westport Monday. “It honestly makes me want to cry because it is her last year; I love her to death, and she did great out there,” Sarah McIntosh said. “It was wonderful, I love it out there. It was my first time being here and first time getting a jacket. I am so happy.” Older sister Shawna joked when asked about her younger sibling’s performance. “She learned it all from me,” Shawna said, then adding, “I am so proud of her, she did so good. This was my senior year and we really wanted another Class D championship and we really worked hard to get back to this point and finish with an undefeated Section VII record.” Shawna McIntosh also had a strong day

at the plate, scoring twice on a single and RBI double, while Sarah was 2-for-3 with a pair of singles and a key hit in the bottom of the fourth to give Crown Point a 3-0 lead before striking again in the fifth, driving in two more and upping the score to 6-0. “It was a great team effort,” head coach Mike Ross said. “Sydney Gould played a great game and Cassie Ashe made a great catch in the outfield.” Gould’s catch came in the top of the fifth, when the Griffins had runners on first and third with one out. Abby Monty hit a ball hard into center field, but Ashe was able to make a shoestring catch to keep the Griffins off the board. “They were really good,” Ross said about the Griffins. “We may have come in here thinking we would have a cake walk, but they were no cake walk and they came to play.” Griffin coach Jim Monty said his team played their best game of the season in the sectional final. “We are so young and have come so far,” Monty said. “I believe we will be able to get back here next year.” For the Panthers, Hannah Palmer also had a pair of hits, including a double. Gould and Makayla Racine also had singles. ■

and three runs scored from the eighth spot in the batting order. “I was surprised by that,” she said. “I just wanted to make sure I tried my best if this was going to be our last stand. (The semifinal) game showed a lot about us and we all pulled together to get this win for the seniors and played great defense. That really helped me.” Sophomore Anna Whitman had four RBI on four singles, while sophomore Jade Charboneau also added three RBI on as many hits. “We just wanted to hit the ball, get on base and move runners around,” Whitman said. “It has been really nice watching (Montville) pitch and she did an outstanding job today.” “We were kind of nervous but we were able to settle into the game and then we were able to execute everything we needed to,” Charboneau said. The Sentinels got run production from every spot in the batting order, with Lauren Dixon crossing the plate four times having reached base in five of her six plate appearances. The Sentinel batters did not strike out against Northern Adirondack pitcher Anna Brown, who entered the game averaging seven punchouts per game. » Softball Cont. on pg. 13

four runs scored, and Jack Grinnell two singles. “All year we have had the goal to pound the ball from the beginning of the game and we were able to do that tonight,” said Gautreau. “Now we want to get to the next step, and we are going to have to stay very focused.” “When we put up eight runs it takes a lot of stress off of all of us,” added Grinnell. “Getting a win like this is just one more step to get us where we want to be.” Dorsett added that it was good to get DuShane into the game in relief of Gallo in the seventh. “Michael had not thrown in a while and we need more than one arm if we are going to go to the next level,” he said. The Sentinels will play in the regional finals Saturday, June 8, at an opponent to be determined. However, the goal remains the same — to get back to Binghamton and take care of what they believe is unfinished business. “Last year we feel we should have had it in the states, but we fell short,” DuShane said. “I feel good about our team right now and we are going to take it one day at a time and prepare for the regional round, which is going to be tough, but I think we can do it.” “We can take the championship game loss with us and put it into the back of our mind, knowing we do not want to have that happen again,” added Gallo. “Having all these guys coming back, they all know what it takes and they know how to get through a tough situation and not crumble,” Grinnell said. ■

TICONDEROGA | The Ticonderoga Sentinels scored eight runs in their first trip to the plate, never looking back as they scored a 15-0 win over Lake Placid to claim the Section VII/Class C baseball title yet again. Russ Gallo pitched six innings of two-hit ball for the win, while Michael DuShane closed the door on the Blue Bomber bats in the seventh. “I have trusted my defense and our bats,” Gallo said. “When they can do this and get up on teams early, it takes a lot of pressure off of everyone.” “In these games a hot start is crucial,” said coach Dan Dorsett, adding that his team is playing as well as they did in the beginning of the season. “This is how we were the first half of the year, but with the long season I was concerned they may have slacked off a little bit,” he said. “My biggest concern all year was defensively because of the way they started out the season like gangbusters. This is how we have been playing all year so I am really excited and hopefully we can carry this momentum.” Offensively, Gallo had a trio of hits, while Nick RobargeGreene had a pair of hits, including a triple, and three RBI. Terrance Benedict added a pair of doubles, while Connall Tierney had a trio of singles, Bryce Gautreau two hits and

Bolton/Schroon beats Chazy in Class D classic By Keith Lobdell SPORTS EDITOR

SCHROON LAKE | In a classic pitcher’s duel June 1, it was the quick-strike ability of the Bolton/Schroon Lake offense that was able to score four times in the opening inning for a 4-1 Section VII/Class D championship game victory over Chazy June 1.

PELKEY SHARP IN WIN

Both pitchers dominated in the game, as winning pitcher Andrew Pelkey scattered three hits over seven innings, striking out eight and allowing four walks. “It was the best, knowing we had four runs I wanted to do my part to make sure that was enough,” Pelkey said. “Base-

ball is probably my favorite sport and it was awesome to get this win. Hopefully we can keep this going and come back here next year, as well.” “Andrew is one of the best pitchers in this area,” Bolton/ Schroon coach Mark Andrejkovics said. “He has been dominant in every year he has played. To be able to perform and stay under the pitch count limit, do what he did against Crown Point and today, he has been amazing.” Pelkey ran into a rough patch in the fourth, throwing 29 of his 96 pitches in the game and giving up one run on two hits. In the fifth, Pelkey rebounded, needing only five pitches to get three outs. “My coach came out and catcher to cool me down and help me get through a tough inning,” Pelkey said. “Coming back out and having my defense help me out was a huge lift.” “It’s never going to go the way we want to draw it up, and Andrew sped things up a little bit but came back into the dugout and was able to slow things down and rely on his defense,” Andrejkovics added. Other than the fourth, Pelkey limited the Eagles to one hit and two walks.

EARLY OFFENSE

Bolton/Schroon Lake’s (or “Wild Eagles,” as fans chanted) big inning came in their first at-bat, when Cian Bresnahan and Dustin Reiter led off the game with singles. After a walk, wild pitch and error leading to a pair of runs, Michael Baker connected on a two-run single, driving in Pelkey and Collin Bresnahan. “We knew it was going to be a close game so we tried to stay focused and come out hard,” Baker said. “We wanted to focus on coming out and scoring as many runs as possible. It was something the team needed so I was able to add some insurance runs. I didn’t do too well last game so it meant a lot to me to get something in this game.” “We were disappointed with our loss and knew we did not bring our best that game, so the kids were

focused on getting quality at-bats early,” Andrejkovics said. “Michael Baker had the green light on 3-0 and he came through for us and picked everyone up emotionally.” Following the opening inning, Chazy pitcher Ben Norcross was nearly perfect while keeping his team in the game. From the second inning on, Norcross did not allow a hit, striking out eight and only allowing a pair of walks. Matt Parent, Connor McCarthy (RBI) and Bruce Juneau had the three Eagles hits, while Preston Laurin reached base twice on walks. ■ Andrew Pelkey allowed only three hits over seven innings in recording the win on the mound for Bolton/ Schroon Lake in the Section VII/Class D baseball title game Saturday. “To have the lower part of our lineup hit was tremendous,” Mullen said. “We told the girls everyone would have a chance to hit if they would swing and we did a great job putting the bat on the ball against one of the better pitchers in our league.” The win capped a return to the top of Section VII for the Sentinels, who lost to AuSable Valley a year ago. Now, the team has its sights set on regional play and a chance to return to the final weekend of the season. “We knew that we had lost talent since the final four team and knew it was a rebuilding process, but that we could be competitive,” Mullen said. “We wanted to make sure these senior girls who had not won anything got the chance to leave with a sectional patch and championship. They worked hard and they earned it.” The Sentinels also took advantage of eight Bobcat errors. For NAC, Brown had a pair of hits, while Kira LaBarge had an RBI single in the first and Grace Thume added a two-RBI single in the sixth. Hannah Jock and Monica-Lynn Charland also had singles in the loss. ■
