FIGHTING INVASIVES

Grant will help Schroon Lake Association get handle on aquatic invasives By Tim Rowland STA FF W RITER

SCHROON LAKE | Like the ivy at Wrigley Field, Eurasian watermilfoil dies back in the winter then springs to life with a vengeance come spring. With a heavy central stem and short whorls of soft, bristlelike leaves, it somewhat resembles a green bottle washer whose strands can grow up to 20 feet in length. It tolerates colder water, so it springs to life earlier in the spring than native plants and races toward the water’s surface where it forms a dense mat on the surface that prevents needed sunlight from fi ltering down to other aquatic species. It fouls boat propellers, is yucky if not impossible to swim in and is undesirable to game fish and other organisms that make up a healthy Adirondack lake ecology.

Mossy Point is one of two boat launches on northern Lake George that is not locked down after hours.

Although the memorandum does not mention them specifically, its focus is on two boat launches south of Ticonderoga at Rogers Rock and Mossy Point. Neither have gates to prevent boat launching when the boat washing stations have closed for the day. Other state boat launches do, including those at Million Dollar Beach in Lake George Village. Staff members at boat launching stations inspect incoming boats for invasives and wash boats that are contaminated. Boats that do not visit other lakes can take advantage of a special seal that tells attendants that the craft is not a risk.

es to prevent the spread of invasive species. The board signed a memorandum of understanding at its last monthly meeting “to work in good faith to create an effective program to prevent the introduction of aquatic invasive species in Lake George.” Supervisor Joe Giordana said most jurisdictions around the lake have signed the memorandum, which describes a “serious and urgent threat” by invasives to the health of Lake George, which is considered a model in the fight against invasives. The same jurisdictions voted in 2013 in favor of stricter rules to prevent invasives, which can damage fisheries, native ecology and tourism.

‘Garrow’ comes to Schroon Shows added due to popular demand By Tim Rowland STA FF W RITER

Lori Bailey during the shooting of “Garrow.”

SCHROON LAKE | The locally produced fi lm “Garrow” is continuing to sell out shows across the Adirondacks, and starting Saturday will begin a six-day run at The Strand in Schroon Lake. Larry McNamara, who owns The Strand with his wife, Liz, said the original plan was for a single show Saturday night, but it soon became apparent one night would not be enough. “It’s going to be huge,” McNamara said. “Everywhere I went people were saying ‘I can’t wait to see (Garrow)’ so we decided to add more shows.” “Garrow” portrays the life of serial killer and rapist Robert Garrow of Mineville, who went on a murderous rampage in the Adirondacks in the early 1970s. Many people still remember Garrow, who eluded police for two harrowing weeks in the summer of 1973. Writer and director Lori Bailey said she’s been amazed at the response her movie has drawn. » Garrow Cont. on pg. 3

Bass Fishing, Costa up next for FLW on Lake Champlain

Community outreach among tour goals By Nathan Ovalle EDITOR

PLATTSBURGH | Lake Champlain will be alive with anglers hoping for the big prize as the Fishing League Worldwide (FLW) returns to Plattsburgh for a pair of events.

The FLW’s Bass Fishing League (BFL) tournament season continues Saturday, July 13, with a T-H Marine tournament presented by Navionics. The tournament — hosted by the City of Plattsburgh and the Adirondack Coast Visitors Bureau — is the third event of 2019 in the Northeast Division. Up to 400 boaters and co-anglers will be competing for top awards of up to $8,000 and $3,000, respectively, in the one-day tournament. Takeoff is set for 6 a.m., with weigh-in scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Plattsburgh City Marina, 5 Dock St., Plattsburgh.

“Fresh off this weekend’s FLW Tour event, Lake Champlain is set for more FLW tournament-fishing action,” a press release from FLW said. The FLW offered tips and a prediction. “Anglers in this BFL tournament will again have to choose between targeting largemouth, smallmouth, or both. For those chasing largemouth, working a ChatterBait around scattered milfoil, a crankbait around sparse grass and rocks, or a swim jig near lily pads and reeds around Ticonderoga (as FLW Tour

champion Casey Scanlon did) will likely be a good bet. Swimbaits, jerkbaits and dropshot rigs should entice smallmouth, especially near rocks and points. Five bass in the 20-pound range should be enough to take home top honors at this mid-July BFL derby.” The 2019 BFL is a 24-division circuit “devoted to weekend anglers,” with 128 tournaments throughout the season, with five qualifying events in each division. Top performers in the BFL can move up to the Costa FLW Series or even the FLW Tour. » FLW Cont. on pg. 5

“I expected maybe 30 of my friends and relatives to come see this movie when it was done,” she said. “Instead, it has sold out repeatedly and consistently since December. Thousands of people have seen it, and thousands more await.” All showtimes at The Strand are at 8 p.m. Admission on July 13 and 14 is $20 and includes a small movie poster and a Q&A after the film with the director, producers, various cast members and crew. Admission for the Monday through Thursday shows will be $9 and $6 for seniors and children. The weekday shows do not include the Q&A. Tickets are sold on a first-come basis. “My favorite part is the Q&A time after each show. These open conversations have often lasted for several hours,” Bailey said. “I sometimes think the movie is more of a conversation piece than anything else. I find it helpful to let folks know at the beginning of the show that this is not a documentary, nor a big budget Hollywood style film. The majority of actors are real people who were somehow involved in the search, capture and ultimate death of Robert Garrow. It just felt right to have real people play those roles, since they lived them.” Much of the film was based on actual courtroom documents and the testimony of Garrow himself. “The film is, at its core, a glimpse into the mind of Robert Garrow,” Bailey said. “His three days on the stand when he admits to his crimes and the re-creation of those crimes as he recalls them.“ Bailey said she will also make an announcement this weekend about her new movie “Camp Champ,” which will be filming in Essex County in September. Information on how people can get involved will be provided. “Just like the Garrow movie project, it will require all hands on deck,” Bailey said.■

The Schroon Lake Association has aggressively fought invasive species, and its members, in conjunction with the Adirondack Park Invasive Plant Program, will spend the summer criss-crossing the 9-mile-long water body, mapping the bottom to document vegetation and water depth. Milfoil will be of interest, as will the lake bottom itself, which is changing and becoming higher in places because of sediment deposits brought in by runoff from the Schroon River. The project is made possible in part by a $5,000 grant from the Cloudsplitter Foundation of Saranac Lake. “Cloudsplitter has been very helpful in aiding many Schroon Lake community programs. We are extremely grateful for their help,” the Schroon Lake Association said in a release. Cloudsplitter’s mission is to improve the future for the flora, fauna, communities and people of the Adirondacks. Glen Repko, a member of the Schroon Lake Association, said the project will map the bottom 30 feet at a swath using a transducer that reads physical features and converts the information into electronic signals. The technology is currently used on 20 Adirondack lakes. The map will give the association a baseline so it can track changes in the lake bed in the future. Divers ply the waters each year to pull out aquatic invasives, which are a constant concern. Milfoil “clogs the water and typically can kill a lake over a period of time,” Repko said. The depth of the lake is a concern as well because deeper waters are essential for the survival of cold water fish such as lake trout and Atlantic salmon. But upstream sediment runoff has been making the lake more shallow, Repko said, with depths in places decreasing from 150 feet to 145 feet. The Schroon Lake Association has been particularly aggressive in fighting invasives and ensuring the water quality, which is noteworthy for its cleanliness. “You can drink the water right off Schroon Lake,” Repko said. ■

‘Downtown’ chronicles ADK life Essay collection by Ginger Henry Kuenzel may or may not focus on Hague

“Downtown” is something of an edgier Lake Wobegon, where the natives will helpfully agree to house sit for the snowbirds who have gone south for the winter, keeping as much of an eye on the homeowners’ liquor cabinet as they do on the pipes. If “Downtown” is indeed based on Hague, it could as easily apply to just about any small Adirondack town. The people fall into recognizable categories — the gossips, the trappers, the Mr. Fix-its, the guys sitting around arguing about the best way to drive in snow. So too is there a warm familiarity to the scenes, be they on the lake, on the post office or even the Adirondack dumps that were mesmerizing to small children in the pre-transfer-station days. And, of course, small towns are equally notable for what they aren’t. “We have no bowling alley, no gas station, no library, no stores,” Kuenzel writes. “We who stay in Downtown when all the others leave are thus completely on our own for entertainment. Fortunately, that’s not a problem.” And part of the entertainment of a small town is telling stories and perhaps, from time to time, embellishing them just a hair. It’s a genre Kuenzel has obvious fun with, and the stories are simultaneously authentic and, perhaps, artfully tweaked. “Downtown” is available in area bookstores and on Amazon. Kuenzel will be signing books with several other authors July 19 at the Uptown in Hague from 5 to 8 p.m. ■

By Tim Rowland STA FF W RITER

HAGUE | Ginger Henry Kuenzel has proved that not only can you go home again, you can get a witty book out of it at the same time. Her new collection of essays called “Downtown” track the happenings in a somewhat fictional Adirondack village that may or may not be based on her hometown of Hague, situated on the shores of northern Lake George. Although she is from Hague, Kuenzel left multiple times —including a lengthy stint in Germany — always to return. Today, her job as a writer and translator allow her to remain in the North Country and work remotely. Kuenzel said she and her friend Sally De Larm Rypkema would often sit and chat in one of Hague’s local gathering spots about local stories and their possibilities as grist for Adirondack literature. But in a small town there are no secrets. “People really would come by and ask if we were writing a book,” Kuenzel said. The townsfolk had two primary fears: One, that they themselves might be mentioned in the book, and two, that they wouldn’t. The fear of being left out seemed to cause the greatest concern.

» Invasives Cont. from pg. 1 The state has said Mossy Point and Rogers Rock do not present significant risk because few boats are launched in off hours. But proponents of the gates, including environmental groups and lakeside towns, say it would only take one missed boat to introduce an inva-

sive. They also note that the two northern launches are particularly important because of their proximity to Lake Champlain. Lake Champlain, which is open to international waterways, has more than 50 nonnative species — not all non-native species are considered invasive, however. To be con-

sidered invasive, the species must cause documented ecological or economic damage. Lake George has five invasive species, and notably has not encountered a new one since tighter regulations were put in place in 2014 that included mandatory boat inspections. The memorandum notes that $9 million

has been spent to remove and control the five aquatic invasive species in Lake George, and the expense of preventing these species from becoming established in the first place is far less. Ticonderoga board members agreed it’s not worth taking chances, considering the amount of money involved. ■

NOT JUST FISHING

The economic impact of the fishing tournaments on Lake Champlain is well documented. But often the anglers do more than fish while in town. During the recent FLW Tour event, community outreach was arranged at the University of Vermont Health Network, Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital in Plattsburgh. FLW Tour pros visited and shared stories with patients, guests, fans and staff prior to the start of the tournament. They snapped photos, signed autographs and gave out goodie bags. “Hosting the FLW Tournament is a real honor for our community and we’re fortune that these professionals take the time to visit,” Kerry Haley, executive director of the Foundation at CVPH, told The Sun. “Having them here was a real treat.” Other efforts included a Unified Fishing Derby, where FLW Foundation pro Cody Kelley and other FLW Tour anglers helped area Special Olympics athletes 18 and younger catch bass. An FLW Expo provided the opportunity to meet some of the top tour pros to discuss fishing tips, techniques and stories. Interactive activities and games were available, including a casting pond, fishing demos and more.

COSTA EVENT NEXT

The following weekend is the Costa FLW Series Northern Division event on Lake Champlain, set for July 18-20. Take-off is at 6 a.m. all three days at the Plattsburgh City Marina. Weigh-in will be from 2-6 p.m. each day at the same location. The Costa event is also hosted by the City of Plattsburgh and the Adirondack Coast Visitors Bureau.

FLW Tour pros snapped photos, signed autographs and gave out goodie bags at CVPH in Plattsburgh during their most recent stop in June. Photo by Curtis Niedermier — See next week’s edition of The Sun to read about what FLW Tour pro and 2019 Angler of the Year David Dudley as well as fellow tour pro Scott Martin, a three-time winner on Lake Champlain, have to say about fishing the local body of water. Local angler Ben Wright will also share his thoughts on participating in the Costa Series tournament.

That event is expected to draw many local anglers to the waters of Lake Champlain. For complete details and updated information, visit FLWFishing.com. For regular updates, photos, tournament news and more, follow FLW’s social media outlets at Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube. ■

Champ Day set for July 21 Moriah chamber seeking volunteers, vendors By Tim Rowland STA FF W RITER

PORT HENRY | The Moriah Chamber of Commerce is seeking vendors and volunteers for the upcoming Champ Day celebration, which will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, July 21, at Champ Beach in Port Henry. The festival, which was held for the first time in 1979, attracted about 700 people last year. “Each year it gets bigger and bigger,” said Catherine Sprague, the chamber’s events coordinator. Port Henry is billed as the Home of Champ, the mysterious sea creature whose sighting is reported from time to time by visitors to the lake and has attracted worldwide media attention. The first modern sighting of Champ occurred in Bulwagga Bay in 1819.

This year’s Champ Day celebration will get underway early with a Champ scavenger hunt — using clues, kids will be able to find wooden Champ replicas in the windows of local businesses in the two weeks leading up to the festival. The day of the event will be the popular cardboard boat building and racing day for the kids, along with a number of other free games and coloring contests and appearances by Penelope the Clown. Music will be provided by a DJ, and food vendors will be on hand. Offshore, there will be a sailboat race, while on dry land, noted Champ hunter Katy Elizabeth will be on hand to talk about her search, Sprague said. “We’re still looking for vendors and volunteers to help with the games,” Sprague said. People who are interested can contact the chamber at 518-250-1050. ■ Moriah Chamber of Commerce events coordinator Catherine Sprague with a wooden image of Champ, which will be part of a Champ Day scavenger hunt that began July 8. Thoughts from Behind the Pressline

America the beautiful

I wonder at times if Americans have gotten too caught up in the current day hustle and bustle of life to reflect By Dan Alexander on what a great country • PUBLISHER • we are privileged to call home. There have been many societies down through the ages that took for granted all the benefits they had built over the years and ultimately lost their way. At some point, we each have to take stock in what we have and what we expect from our individual and collective efforts as well as those from our government, charged with maintaining and building a foundation for the nation. National optimism seems to have taken a back seat these days to finger-pointing. Nearly every major community around the nation has a July Fourth celebration, so why shouldn’t there be one in Washington? From the moment it was announced by the president that there would be a Fourth of July event, in the nation’s capital, the nay-sayers for Trump’s Fourth of July Event were non-stop, before, during and after the event. It’s a shame that on this special day, the nation couldn’t put political differences aside and celebrate arm-in-arm. The event wasn’t a political rally, it was All-American celebration, but both sides ginned it up, and it sadly became just another political football. I strongly doubt in the future there will be much talk about what’s right with America and what a great nation we are blessed to call our home. That’s what I see at the root of our national discontentment. We spend far too much time defining our political differences and not nearly enough time celebrating our freedoms and our ordinary citizens who go about their business each day, raising families, building lives and making their version of the American dream a reality. Opportunity is all around us if we just open our eyes and take time to smell the roses. The nation is full of beautiful landscapes, magnificent cities, wonderful hospitals and creative, talented and generous people who give so much of themselves. It’s uplifting just to be in their company and hear their stories. We should spend more time focused on the positives we see around us, the debt we owe to those who gave birth to this great nation and most of all those who fight daily to protect us and preserve the freedoms we value. America has much to be proud of, but it’s up to us to recognize her beauty and share that optimism with those around us. ■

concerns. I have learned much from our discussions regarding the needs of our local municipalities. Throughout the year, local highway departments are busy repairing pavement, guide rails, bridges, drainage systems and traffic signs as well as removing litter and debris. In the winter months, local highway crews are out day and night, plowing and de-icing local roads, to ensure safety for the traveling public.

Whether transporting products for a small business, going to work or getting their kids to school, folks in the By Rep. Billy Jones North Country depend • GUEST COLUMNIST • on our local roads and bridges that get them where they need to go. That’s why this summer I’m touring our local highway departments to learn how the state can better serve their needs.

While major thoroughfares get the most attention, maintaining local infrastructure is just as important. A 2017 report from the Office of the State Comptroller showed that town-owned bridges are more likely to be structurally deficient than bridges owned by other local entities, especially in rural towns. Last summer, the families who live on Cold Brook Road in Saranac experienced this firsthand when the Cold Brook Bridge was unexpectedly shut down due to structural deficiencies. The emergency closure forced 18 families to resort to an incredibly bumpy 25-minute detour that significantly increased commute times, put families at risk due to potentially delayed emergency services

It’s been a busy week to start off July, touring nine town highway garages over three days. I kicked off my tour with local highway superintendents in the towns of Beekmantown, Schuyler Falls and Plattsburgh, followed by rides and discussions with highway and town supervisors of Burke, Bellmont and Chateaugay in Franklin County. I’ve also visited the northern Clinton County towns of Champlain, Chazy and Mooers, and I plan to visit the remaining towns in my district throughout the summer. As part of each tour, I’ve hosted roundtable discussions with town supervisors and village mayors to listen to their

To help repair and replace the North Country’s roads and bridges, I fought for a 2019-20 state budget that provides $438.1 million for the Consolidated Local Street and Highway Improvement Program (CHIPs) and $39.7 million for the Marchiselli Program. These programs help municipalities to complete much-needed road and bridge maintenance projects. Additionally, during the final weeks of the 2019 legislative session, I helped secure $65 million in Extreme Winter Recovery funding. North Country families are no strangers to the harsh conditions that winter weather can bring, and these funds will offer critical relief to our communities.

Appreciation for water system support

To the Editor: This is a letter of thanks and appreciation to Derek Fleury and others in Ticonderoga water department for their efforts in solving a problem for us. Thirty years ago, when our well inexplicably dried up, I got permission to hook up to the village’s (at the time) water system. Over the years, as people built houses around us, they also used this line. We now have five families on it. Unfortunately, the line runs under a small creek. This has led to leaks that have resulted in costly repairs. We were dealing with yet another leak when Derek came up with a solution. He worked long and hard to help us out. The process turned out to be much more complicated than expected. He and Supervisor Giordano worked through the problems with us and got the job done. Once again, I am reminded of the advantages of living in a small town where friends and neighbors help each other. Thanks again to Derek for making this happen. - Doren Rockhill, Ticonderoga ■

Golf course seeks entries for FUBU tournament

TICONDEROGA | Entries for the 10th-annual For Us By Us (FUBU) Golf Tournament, scheduled for Sunday, July 21, are now being accepted. Due to strong player turnout, tee times have been divided into morning and afternoon, which will make for a smoother flow of play and offer an opportunity for lunch either after the morning tee-off or before the afternoon tee-off, and still allow time for the 5:30 p.m. awards reception. Shotgun starts are at 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. Appetizers and awards will follow at The Barn, just north of the golf course. Each player will receive a gift bag upon registration, which will include a commemorative wind jacket, golf supplies and other items. Cost per person is $100, and includes golf, cart, food and gifts. The tournament is open to the public. Proceeds will benefit the golf course, currently undergoing significant renovation and upgrade following the fire that destroyed the clubhouse in May 2018. To register, call George Mackey, PGA Pro, at 518585-2801. The Ticonderoga Golf Course is located on Route 9N. ■

‘The most rewarding experience’ By Keith Lobdell SPORTS EDITOR

BEEKMANTOWN | As the AuSable Valley unified basketball team took to the court, a familiar face to the basketball sidelines in Section VII was on their bench. Coach Jamie Douglass has been the head coach of the boys varsity team at AuSable for many years, with a coaching career that includes a trip to the Class C final four not only as a coach, but also as a player. But having the chance to coach the unified team, a program developed through NYSPHSAA and Special Olympics New York, has been “rewarding” to him and those involved in the program. “This is probably the most rewarding experience,” Douglass said. “These kids have come so far and you go home with a smile on your face every night with what we get to do. I have as big of a smile at these games as I did when we went to the final four.” Saranac Lake coach Will Ellsworth has Rinnaie also been on some of the biggest in Ticonderoga coaches Alexandra Brown and Kendra McCoy have been with the Sentinel ..stages J?ui!>n i#~i#;lhtiM;i the state, taking the Red Storm hockey team unified program since it started four years ago and have seen unified basketball grow ~ to the final four. from their team to a total of seven in Section VII over the past four years. sport but I feel everyone who takes part in it is unified in purpose and you are cheering for both teams on the court. There are so many life lessons they are learning from teamwork, empathy, sportsmanship and more.” “One of the things about unified has been bringing these kids together,” Smith said. “They do not typically hang out with each other, get to play sports with each other or interact with each other. Now, not only are they doing that on their own teams but they are building relationships with other kids on other teams and they are respecting each other on the court and getting to know everyone, which is good to see from returning players.” “It’s life changing all around,” McCoy said. “Life changing for the players, life changing for the coaches and the fans — just life changing for everybody.” “I think that shows you that these people are pro-kids and they are pro-education and they understand what role this plays in a school,” Robert Sutphen, Section VII unified coordinator, said about the coaches in the section. “It brings kids into a school-wide community who otherwise would not play a high school sport or may not do anything else at school. These are kids who a lot of times get on the bus and go home at the end of the school day. Seeing that change and seeing that people want to get involved shows that these coaches are more about winning on Friday or Tuesday night in just the sport they coach. They understand the value of sports and what these kids want.” ■ — This story is part three in a series on unified basketball in Section VII, which also appears in the most recent edition of North Country Living, published by Sun Community News and Printing.

McIntosh, St. Andrews, Wells named all-state By Keith Lobdell SPORTS EDITOR

CROWN POINT | Three Section VII softball players were named to the New York State Sportswriters and Coaches Organization for Girls Sports (NYSSCOGS) All-State Team for the spring season.

SHAWNA MCINTOSH

Crown Point’s Shawna McIntosh was named to the second team in Class D. The senior pitcher led the Panthers to a 13-1 season in 2019, advancing to the NYSPHSAA Class D final four before suffering their only loss of the year to Alfred-Almond. Over her career, McIntosh was in the circle in three Section VII championships for the Panthers, earning MVAC all-star honors all three seasons while being named league MVP in 2019.

SAIDI ST ANDREWS

Ticonderoga catcher Saidi St. Andrews was named to the fifth team in Class C. Also a senior, St. Andrews helped to lead the Sentinels to the Section VII/Class C title and a regional semifinals game against Chatham. She was named to the All-CVAC squad this season.

SAMANTHA WELLS

The Saranac senior was named to the sixth team in Class B. Wells was the Most Outstanding Offensive Player in the CVAC this season as well as an All-CVAC all-star. Wells helped lead the Chiefs to the Section VII/Class B final against Plattsburgh High. ■
