Lake Placid’s SkyRide opens
THOUSANDS ATTEND GALA PARADE
Lift rides for visitors, athletes, coaches By Kim Dedam STAFF WRITER
LAKE PLACID |Visitors, athletes, coaches and officials have a new ride to the Olympic ski jump towers: the SkyRide Gondola. The $2.9 million project was completed in less than a year using equipment and systems supplied and installed by Doppelmayr Garaventa Group based in Switzerland. “The SkyRide gondola is the latest piece in our continued effort to modernize the Lake Placid Olympic Jumping Complex for not only the world-class athletes that train and compete there, but also for the thousands of guests that visit the complex yearround,” Gov. Andrew Cuomo said in announcing launch of the new winter sport infrastructure. It is one of several renovations planned at the Ski Jump Complex.

locations in the Adirondacks. The first fresh farm market was placed inside the Keeseville Pharmacy in Keeseville; the second inside the Mountain Weaver’s Farm Store on Main Street in Port Henry. Both local shops address the lack of grocery options in a region replete with “food deserts,” areas where access and/or distance to food markets or grocery stores proves challenging to a large number of people. “The Tool Kit provides a model to share with other communities around the nation,” AdkAction spokesperson Hannah Grall told the Sun. It will clearly lay out work needed to establish Farmacy markets and all the challenges that go along with this kind of project. AdkAction is Keynote Sponsor of the Food Justice Summit to be held at the Wild Center on Feb. 27. “We will also highlight our food access work t hrough pa r t icipation in the Well-Fed Essex County Collaborative panel, and specifically, discuss the promising Double Up SNAP program that we are piloting at the Keeseville Farmacy,” Grall said

in a news release. “AdkAction will introduce the Keynote speaker, Austin Fredrick, who is deputy director of the Thurman Arnold Project at Yale University, an initiative established to generate and disseminate scholarship to impact competition enforcement and policy. He is currently working on a book that calls for restoring the balance of power in America’s food system in favor of farmers, workers, and small businesses.” At-risk and low-income families often face insurmountable obstacles when it comes to accessing fresh food, Grall said. “Many rural communities in the North Country experience high food insecurity rates due to limited access to transportation; limited access to SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program)-authorized businesses; and the inability to afford fresh fruits and vegetables.” Farmacy has established a supply line for its markets from at least 13 local farms which provide over 120 different products. They plan to increase Farmacy programs in the North Country this summer. ■

The announcement was made by the Essex County Arts Council. The recipients include: Esther Rogers Baker, who is a cellist, composer, collaborator and teacher. She is using the ACDG grant funds for a unique recording session based on MRI scans. ELIZABETHTOWN | Essex County Supervisors have asked Gov. Andrew Cuomo to reinstate $300,000 that was cut out of the state budget, money used to help offset the cost of trucking garbage to a Franklin County landfill. The payment is part of a deal made 25 years ago, when the Pataki administration outlawed landfills within the Adirondack Park. That ruling hit Essex County particularly hard, since it’s the only county entirely within the Blue Line. “We’re the only county in the state that isn’t allowed to have a landfill,” said Moriah Supervisor Tom Scozzafava. “For the governor to pull this $300,000 is just wrong.”

SARANAC LAKE | Saranac Lake Winter Carnival’s Gala Parade is legend. The celebration last Saturday drew thousands to the streets here under perfect blue skies and a bright sun. The air temp hovered around 8 degrees as the first sirens of the lead police
cars blew. And the nearly two-hour festive stream of mayhem, music and dancing wound its way over the Saranac River to the town hall. Brandishing paper swords, a batallion of school children stormed the palace en route, several times! A kraken was slayed by a legion of small children and their families! Petrova Elementary School kids built a fierce-looking dragon whose peered side-to-side at the crowd! The legendary Lawn Chair Ladies danced their way through their 25th carnival parade! There were some 40 Canoodlers dressed as gnomes dancing with

mushroom paddles; students from Paul Smith’s College log-rolled on a trailer towed behind a plow truck. A troupe of dancing sprites wrapped in dusty pink tulle and floral garland seemed to emerge from Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream with Titania festooned in green and Puck drumming in the snowbound heart of winter. There were hundreds of marching actors, kings and queens, butterflies, unicorns, trumpets and tubas and tin pipes, drummers on buckets, bagpipes and floats that ferried legends from one end of the village to the other. Characters came
to life from Gael and Greek and Roman myth and a myriad storybook tales. A sasquatch was seen; a Yeti slept on one float; and the starry night skies over Eagle Island made an appearance under the bright midday sun. The crowd was a huge winner in this parade. And parade results came in Monday with the Louis Fobare Memorial Trophy Best of Show going to the Walkow Family and Friends for their rendition of Gods and Monsters, complete with Kraken, a Minotaur and Medusa’s head! ■

Friday, 2/14 thru Tuesday, 2/18 New frost-rails were installed this fall on the jumps. A new multi-color LED system was added to track jumpers as they descend. And the ski jump arena also gained state-of-the-art communication systems, connecting officials and judges to the public address announcer. The elevator to the top of the 120-meter jump is also renovated and open. A zip line adventure ride adjoining the jumps approved for construction last summer is expected to be completed by fall 2020, according to ORDA. Cuomo has appropriated nearly $240 million in state funding to support improvements and upgrades at ORDA venues in the past eight years, including a total $14 million at the ski jumps and $60 million for a biathlon stadium, hiking lodge and ski course at Mt. Van Hoevenberg, which is under construction. Technical improvements at the bobsled run at Mt. Van Hoevenberg include
a new start house with timing sensors for sleds and a mountain coaster along the 1932 Olympic bobsled course for visitors. Another $100 million is planned for critical upgrades at the historic 1932 and 1980 Olympic Winter Games center in Lake Placid. And a $14 million investment looks to rebuild Mid-Station Lodge, which was destroyed by fire in December at Whiteface. ORDA CEO and President Michael Pratt told the Sun last fall that investment intends to keep Lake Placid competitive in international and regional winter sport events for the next generation. “We’re addressing technical operations. We’re addressing safety for athletes and for fans. We’re addressing needs for year-round operations. And we’re trying to be efficient to make sure these facilities are sustainable,” Pratt said. “What we did was a very appropriate analysis of our facilities, and we set ourselves up for the next 30 years.”

In 1995, the county was looking to open the second cell of a relatively new landfill in Lewis when the state order came down, said Essex County Manager Dan Palmer. Essex County sued the state, and as a result of the ensuing settlement, the state agreed to an annual payment to help defray the cost of sending the garbage to another county. The payment is not contractually guaranteed, but this is the first time it has failed to be part of the state budget, Palmer said. Scozzafava said he’s not opposed to the Adirondack landfill restriction, but the regulation places a significant financial burden on the county, which must collect waste from its 14 transfer stations and send it 100 miles away or more to the north. Palmer said this costs Essex County $1.4 million a year. So while the state payment is only about a fifth of the cost, it still is a meaningful part of the county budget. “Without it, it makes it very difficult to keep us under the (2 percent) tax cap,” Palmer said. Along with a resolution asking the governor to replace the funding, the county has been working with local lawmakers, who are aware of the problem. “I think we can probably come to an agreement,” Palmer said. ■

Each week as I sit down in front of the computer screen to offer some perspective on current aff airs, my goal is twofold. From this simple businessman’s perch, I hope to offer an optimistic approach to the future and try to give readers something to think about from a different perspective. In this age of sharp division, there appears to be little interest in the “middle ground” or opportunities to seek compromise. The old theory used to be when running for office Democrats would move to the left and Republicans to the right during the primaries to obtain their parties’ nomination. Then move to the center once the final election race was on since that’s where the race was won or lost. The differences between how to address the issues facing the country were not that far apart in past years. Unlike “Goldilocks and the Three Bears”, where one bed is too hard, the other bed was too soft, and the last one was just right, I wonder if we’ve lost sight of “just right”? There are so many special interests and varying positions on all those interests one has to wonder what our future has in store. The goals and priorities of each party are not just at odds with each other they don’t even agree on what they are. With the country so polarized now, after the impeachment trials and State of the Union speech, it seems pretty clear that President Trump and House Speaker Pelosi appear to be at wit’s end. While it would appear that Republicans and Democrats would be lining up after their leaders but both sides seem to have splintering factions who are not pleased with the direction of their parties. The path to the nominations for the Democrats appears very cloudy after the debacle in Iowa and while Republicans claim to be in lockstep behind the President, he continues to provide self-inflicted damage causing party faithful reason to doubt the “four more years” mantra. Clearly, there is no consensus leader on the horizon, which only means more disruption, feuding, future investigations, and possible impeachment trials regardless of which party successfully claims the White House, Congress or the Senate in the upcoming election. Our future rests on what we can agree on, and right now we can’t agree on much. ■ — Dan Alexander is publisher of Sun Community News.

Bank looks to restock local food shelves
I
SARANAC LAKE | Officials of Community Bank N.A. are asking for the local community’s help in restocking area food shelves. Community Bank branches across northern New York have launched a canned food drive for the month of February, hoping to
collect 5,000 items for area food banks. “Our local food pantries need our support,” said bank Vice President & Regional Retail Banking Manager Kent Backus. “We’re hopeful that the food collected from this drive will help keep their shelves stocked for weeks to come. We encourage all community members to scan your cupboards or grab an extra item from the store and give what you can at any participating Adirondack branch.” This is the third year Community Bank has held a food drive in honor of National Canned Food Month. Last year, branches collected 4,127 items for 30 food pantries across the region. ■

Sweetie Suzie is a great all-around kitty! By Bryeanna Villani COLUMNIST
SUZIE’s story since arriving at the shelter is different from that of most animals. She came in as a stray and was thought to be pregnant. At that time, we only had room for a crate in the hallway outside of the office. Every morning when I came in, Suzie would see me and start meowing until I gave her attention and food. It got to the point that any time she saw me in the hallway, meow, meow, MEOW! Suzie quickly wore me down. Seeing that we didn’t have an available cubby, and given her
condition, I began to bring her into the office with me during the day. She enjoyed weeks of snoozing by my feet, sitting next to my computer for regular chin scratches, and intently watching YouTube videos with me while trying to learn how to use the Mac. We both loved it! Then Suzie suddenly decided she needed more room to explore and started hopping the gate every chance she got, that stinker! She would run for the outside door or go tease the dogs. And her tummy wasn’t getting bigger. Well, after an ultrasound we found out that Suzie had played us all! As I couldn’t keep her contained in the office anymore, once we had a room for her she had to go into lockdown. I still try to visit my sweet kitty friend with a handful of treats and a whole lot of love regularly, but her time as an office kitty is past.
I feel there’s not enough room in this column to accurately describe this special kitty. Suzie is super sweet and adores attention, she doesn’t tolerate being held for long but will happily settle herself on your lap and nap. She loves to play with you and on her own, she goes batty for catnip toys. Suzie is a girl who fully enjoys her food, she loves Temptation treats and salmon cat food and will happily eat for a few, as she did when we thought she was pregnant. She’s smart and feisty and naughty, she’d look right at me before jumping the gate and running from the office, no matter how many ways I tried to set up the gate, even learning how to bank her jump off the filing cabinet! She is maybe two and gets along with just about anything she meets. However, we were surprised to
find out that Suzie is absolutely terrified of children! I can promise you that whoever makes room for Suzie in their life will get an awesome cat with loads of personality for years to come. Please help me find my little friend her forever home! ■

Eight North Country farms receive ANCA Local Farm Grant awards Funds donated by Bike the Barns cyclists last October By Kim Dedam STAFF WRITER
SAR ANAC L AKE | Eight North Country farms won Adirondack North Country Association (ANCA) Local Farm Grant awards this year. Each will put proceeds toward farm equipment purchases to expand products and provisions this summer. Announced in October 2019, the new grant program is designed to strengthen small farm operations with support for value-added infrastructure. Local Farm Grants are supported entirely by anonymous donors who participated in ANCA’s Bike the Barns event last September. “Inspired by the farms along the route and motivated by their own appreciation of local farms, they committed $100,000 to go directly to North Country farm businesses through a competitive grant process,” ANCA said in announcing eight winners. “We know their investment will make a significant impact for the grant recipients, their families and employees, and the people and businesses they serve and support,” ANCA Executive Director Kate Fish said of the generous donation. A total $103,962 was presented to eight farms, four are in Essex and Clinton counties. Blue Pepper Farm in Jay, owned by farmers Shannon and Tyler Eaton. will use grant proceeds toward their plan to building a creamery on the farm. In business since 2012, Blue Pepper produces grass-fed lamb, sheepskins, yarn, pork, eggs and poultry. “This grant allows for a significant expansion of our farm business that we’ve been working towards since starting out,” IN VOGUE
Shannon and Tyler Eaton, owners of Blue Pepper Farm in Jay, were awarded one of eight Local Farm Grants from ANCA is this first round of grant awards. Blue Pepper Farm will use the funds to build a creamery. Photo by Lisa Godfrey Shannon said of the grant win. Blue Pepper Farm has rented creamery space for three years, and in that time has developed a product that their customers love. “We’re ready to expand production,” Shannon said. “The timing of this could not be better.” In Wadhams, Juniper Hill Farm won funding toward the purchase of a peeling machine for processing butternut squash. The new equipment will allow Juniper Hill to increase its sales to local schools and other institutions that prefer minimally processed vegetables. ANCA said processing equipment used in winter could allow Juniper Hill to maintain year-round jobs. At Mace Chasm Farm in Keeseville, owner Asa Thomas-Train
will use Local Farm Grant funds to buy a curing cabinet for their butcher shop, increasing sausage and cured meat production. This expansion, too, will add production capacity during winter months. In Willsboro, Triple Green Jade Farm owner Dan Rivera will put the grant monies toward the purchase of cow milking equipment. The added dairy operation will diversify their farm business, which includes wood-fired oven baked breads and crackers. In Argyle, near Fort Edward, Dave and Marge Randles will use grant funding to purchase a batch freezer and scooping cabinet at their Cheese Factory, expanding production of frozen dairy desserts, according to ANCA. Milkweed Tussock Tubers in Heuvelton; North Branch Farm in Belleville; and Peacock and Pony Farm in Natural Bridge also won funds for farm expansion projects. “We received an unprecedented number of applications for this grant, and it was incredibly challenging for the grant committee to narrow it down to the final recipients,” Fish said. “There is clearly a need for investment in our region’s farms if we are to see them thrive and help drive a more robust local economy.” Fish said ANCA continues to develop programs to support this region’s farmers. “This process gave us a telling picture of their various needs and how we can invest in their future.” In this first round of Local Farm Grants, ANCA received applications from 52 farms and food businesses seeking a total $1 million toward projects valued at over $2 million. “The Local Farm Grant program was designed to support projects that address gaps in the local food supply chain, increase opportunity for value-added processing or secure business development services,” ANCA said. “The grants provide financial support where traditional funding resources like bank loans are not accessible.” ■

PLATTSBURGH | The Saranac varsity girls indoor track and field team competed the sweep of the Section VII indoor track and field titles, scoring 109 points to claim the championship Saturday at the Plattsburgh State Field House. Plattsburgh High placed second with 95 points, followed by Beekmantown, Peru, Ticonderoga, Saranac Lake, AuSable Valley, Seton Catholic and Moriah/Boquet Valley. Leah Madden and Mackenzie Converse took the top two spots in the 300, wit Madden clocking in a 47.93 seconds, both ahead of Beekmantown’s Kennedy Ritter. “I was happy winning today and I am hoping to improve for the state qualifier,” said Madden, referring to next Saturday’s (Feb. 15) meet where the section will determine their NYSPHSAA meet team (March 7 meet). Marissa LeDuc score a win in the high jump with a height of 4-6 to beat out Beekmantown’s Lucianna Brown and Saranac teammate Angelena Fay. “My year went really well as my first indoor year doing high jump and I am looking to work on flipping my feet more,” said LeDuc. For the Hornets, Abi Batu-Tiako won the 55 dash with a time of 9.53 seconds over Peru’s Abby Bruce and PHS teammate Kennedy Baker, while also winning the triple jump with a mark of 32-5.5 over Lyons and Gabriella Laundry of PHS.
Lily Potthast took home a pair of Section VII individual titles for the AuSable Valley girls varsity indoor track and field team with wins in the 1,000 and 1,500. Photo by Jill Lobdell “I wanted to keep a positive mentality for myself and my teammates throughout the day and I am ready to just continue to improve as we get to qualifiers,” said Batu-Tiako. Third place Beekmantown secured the most individual event wins, as Angelina Lyons won the 55 hurdles over Batu-Tiako and Kaitlyn Caron
Mia Sanford won the Section VII girls weight throw title. Photo by Jill Lobdell of Peru in a time of 7.84. Lyons then teamed with Ritter, Brown and Evelyn Roberts in the 640 relay; and the team of Mikayla Hamel, Ritter, Brown and Sierra Wood won the 1,600 relay. In the field, the Eagles got a win from Danielle Dyke in the long jump with a mark of 15-5.25, ahead of Bruce and Laundry. “It has been a competitive season and I was able to pull through here at sectionals,” said Dyke. “I set a really big goal at the beginning of the season and have now been working on attaining that goal one piece at a time.” Peru got a win from the team of Bruce, Sara Crippen, Harley Gainer and Jennifer Owen in the 3,200 relay with a time of 11:22.60, while Crippen scored a win in the 600 over Sophia McKiernan of M/BV and LeDuc with a time of 1:49.96; and Gainer got the win in the 3,000 with a time of 12:00.34 over Faline Yang of Seton and Gillian Miner of Saranac. “We have been able to win most of the regular meets so we were expecting to have this result in the relay,” said Crippen. “We really want to keep making sure we can keep our pace and stay in the lead because we want to go to states.” “It was a pretty good run and I felt pretty good — I had some cramps late but I pushed through,” said Gainer. “I want to focus on getting some more strength in my shoulders and arms but right now it is about trying to get better times.” AuSable Valley’s Lily Potthast scored a win in the 1,500 with a time of 5:15.65 over McKiernan and Lea DeJordy of Seton, while also winning the 1,000 with a time of 3:28.72 ahead of Crippen and Savannah DeJordy of Seton. “I feel like I have gotten a lot stronger and faster this season, and I have been really fast in the mile, which has not been my best event in the past,” said Potthast, who added she will be attending Yale in the fall to continue her running career. Ticonderoga’s Lizzie Rich score a throw of 29-10 to win the shot put ahead of teammate Vivian Porter and Saranac Lake’s Caylen Skiff, while Red Storm thrower Mia Sanford won the weight throw with a mark of 36-10 ahead of Saranac teammates Madison DuBray and Abigail Duquette. “I started at this event just coming into indoor this season and I try to hit the weight room every day and work on my form,” said Rich. “Now, I just want to get to 30-feet. I have been throwing it at practice and warm ups, I just have to get it during the competition.” “It has been a really great season and I have loved the weight throw so much and I feel the more I have gone through the season, the more I have loved it,” Sanford said. “It has also taught me patience.” ■
PLATTSBURGH | The Saranac varsity boys indoor track and field team is right where it expects to be at the end of the season: sectional champions. The Chiefs (147) held off Plattsburgh High (104) to claim the title Saturday, followed by Beekmantown, Saranac Lake, Moriah/ Boquet Valley, Peru, Seton Catholic, Ticonderoga and AuSable Valley. For the Chiefs, Zashon Abrams ran a time of 6.96 seconds to win the 55 dash, followed by Tanner Estes of Peru and Dade Cox of Beekmantown. “The season has gone pretty good running the 55, and I want to see if I can get that personal best time I have been working toward all season long,” said Abrams. The other three wins for the Chiefs came on the field, where Connor Kiroy had a throw of 53-00 to win the weight throw ahead of teammate Casey Breyette and Connor Mcginnis of Beekmantown. Garrett Adolfo was the only long jumper over 19 feet with a mark of 19-1 in scoring ahead of teammate Anthony Bernardi and Plattsburgh High’s Jaylen Gonzalez, while Bernardi recorded a triple jump of 38-0 to defeat Plattsburgh High athletes Kyle LaValley and Adam Elshafay for the sectional title. “The season has been on and off because we could not get my mark consistent, but today we were able to find a good mark and be consistent throughout the day,” said Adolfo. “It has been pretty rough with my mark but I just got it down at practice the other day and it worked out this meet,” said Bernardi. PHS runner Matthieu Durkin scored the win in the 55 hurdles with a time of 8.69, beating out Isaiah Mars of Ticonderoga and Aidan Hoogkamp of Beekmantown.

“There has been a lot of fierce competition, especially with Aidan, he has really pushed me and today I was able to get out of the blocks and get it done,” said Durkin. “I’m just hoping I can keep getting personal best times and see how close I can get to (Cameron) Duffield (referring to last season’s 55 hurdles champ and state outdoor champion).” In what may have been the main event of the meet, Seton’s Jake Glicksman beat out a field that featured all state and state champions in the 1,600 with a time of 4:42.78, finishing ahead of Logan Van Buren (M/ BV) and the Saranac Lake champion duo of Peter Fogarty and Micah McCulley.
“I wanted to go out pretty easy and pick up the pace at the end and it went how I wanted it to,” said Glicksman. “This is the first time this season that all four of us were in the race, which is cool because we all push each other. This week was more about tactics, so I tried to hold the pace back early.” Van Buren came back to win a pair of events, running a time of 1:34.21 to win the 600 over Rowan Jackson of PHS and teammate Landon Peters, while also running a time of 2:47.83 in the 1,000 in edging McCulley and Glicksman.
Logan Van Buren of Moriah/Boquet Valley leads the early stages of the 1,600 at the Section VII championships Feb. 8, followed closely by Saranac Lake’s Peter Fogarty. Van Buren would place second in the event, while winning the 600 and 1,000. Fogarty would score a win in the 3,200. Photos by Jill Lobdell
“The season started out strong but then I got sick, but we went down to Darthmouth and I ran a strong 1,000 and we have been riding the wave ever since,” said Van Buren. Fogarty picked up a win in the 3,200 with a time of 10:02.58, ahead of Emery Tausinger of M/BV and Sam DeJordy of Seton. Cox scored a in the 300 in a time of 39.43, ahead of the Saranac trio of Abrams, Bernardi and Adolfo. “It was mostly a run down from my lane assignment and I was able to see everyone in front of me and chase them down,” said Cox. Tausinger joined M/BV teammates Denali Garnia, Gage Perry and Landon Peters to win the 3,200 relay in a time of 9:23.00 in a race where Saranac Lake and PHS were disqualified for lane violations and Saranac lost their baton. The Plattsburgh High team of LaValley, Ethan Waters, Durkin and Estes won the 640 relay with a time of 1:23.09. The race also had an issue when a Saranac runner ran into a can during the final baton exchange. The Beekmantown team of Hoogkamp, Alexander Jock, Izaiah Jock and Cox won the 1,600 relay in 3:53.05. Saranac Lake’s Patrick Alberga had a throw of 50-8 to win the shot put over the Saranac trio of Kiroy, Breyette and Branden Ashley. “The season has been going great but I have not been hitting the marks I want to, but we are getting there,” Alberga said. Plattsburgh High’s Benjamin Bourdeau scored the win in the high jump with a height of 5.6, beating out Peru’s Hadden Barcomb. “We have had a lot of back and forth in the event with good competition and I am happy I was able to get it done at sectionals,” said Bordeau. Based on the event, the top five to seven finishers in each will return the Plattsburgh State Field House Saturday, Feb. 15, where they will vie for positions on the Section VII state team which will compete at the NYSPHSAA championships March 7 in Staten Island. ■

so supportive of me and so amazing. I have had so many great coaches, not just in Schroon Lake but also in the offseason and it is so great to get where I am today because I would not have been able to do this without a lot of people.” Gereau filled up the entire state sheet in the win, adding 14 rebounds, seven steals and six assists to the Wildcat effort. “It’s really important to me that this team is so well rounded,” she said. “It’s not just one or two or three players — we can go 10 deep and we all are about winning basketball.” “Malena was playing great team ball the whole game and without us saying anything, her teammates rallied in the last couple of minutes and got it done for her,” Wildcats head coach Katie

SCHROON | Malena Gereau did not think it was going to be the night she entered the Section VII record books Feb. 10. However, needing 29 to reach the 1,000 point mark for her career, the Schroon Lake junior scored 32 in the Wildcats 65-36 win over Lake Placid, becoming the fifth player this season the reach the threshold. After the game, Gereau gave all the credit to her teammates and coaches. “I was not really expecting to get it tonight so it started to be a little nervewracking towards the end of the fourth,” Gereau said. “I love my team.
