Local officials support new measles legislation By Laura Achouatte STA FF W RITER
ELIZABETHTOWN | For many, June marked the beginning of the summer camp season. Venturing to the Adirondacks for a desired summer youth camp is a pastime for many locals as well as in other regional areas of New York, namely the metropolitan areas downstate. But concerns arise around the camp season this year with anti-vax movements and the still looming threat of measles outbreaks.

We have also provided funding for girls to participate in the Shine On program, a weekend retreat for girls ages 11 to 13 that helps build resilience and confidence.” Last year, the Amazing Adirondack Race raised $5,500 for scholarships. “It’s a super fun event for all ages, for families, for everyone,” Whitson said. “We have families that send teams and teams of older adults. It’s really all about solving riddles, doing silly, fun challenges. People had a great time last year, we had a riddle that lead them to Kate Smith’s photo in the Olympic Museum, and one team member had to sing ‘God Bless America,’ while another video-recorded it for the referees.”

LAKE PLACID | Clues in books? A head of cabbage? A picnic for a finish line? These curious hints are somehow central to The Amazing Adirondack Race, a Sunday fun-day, non-strenuous challenge that is part hilarity, part puzzle, all for charity scholarship funds. Zonta Club of the Adirondacks has planned the annual race to be especially amazing this year. Teams of four can test their wits against some 20 other teams. Debra Whitson, an attorney, is a member of the club’s board of directors. “We are raising money with this Amazing Adirondack Race and 100 percent is going into our Zonta Club Scholarship Fund, which provides scholarships for
The Amazing Adirondack Race is set for Sunday, July 14, rain or shine. The official sign-in and race briefing is at 8 a.m. for a 9 a.m. start. A $100 entry fee per team of four nets an official Amazing Adirondack Race shirt and a picnic lunch for everyone. Cash prizes of $500, $250 and $100 are awarded to the three winning teams. More information and a few curious clues are posted on The Zonta Club of the Adirondacks Facebook page. Questions can be directed via Facebook messaging there. Registration through Eventbrite is online here: https://bit.ly/2YgUtbm The Zonta Club of the Adirondacks is part of a global organization established in 1919 to empower women through service and advocacy. Zonta International “envisions a world where women have access to all resources and are represented in decisionmaking positions on an equal basis with men. In such a world, no woman lives in fear of violence.” ■

As of June 13, Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed legislation removing non-medical exemptions from school vaccination requirements for children. In a press release from the Department of Health, it states, “The United States is currently experiencing the worst outbreak of measles in more than 25 years, with outbreaks in pockets of New York primarily driving the crisis. As a result of non-medical vaccination exemptions, many communities across New York have unacceptably low rates of vaccination, and those unvaccinated children can often attend school where they may spread the disease to other unvaccinated students, some of whom cannot receive vaccines due to medical conditions. The new law is to help protect the public amid this ongoing outbreak.” A health advisory memo from the office of the Department of Health Commissioner Howard A. Zucker to health-care providers gives an update on the current numbers and counties where outbreaks are reported.

Campground holds Color Run for Autism By Laura Achouatte STA FF W RITER
NORTH HUDSON | Families in support of and affected by autism congregated at Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park in North Hudson June 22 to participate in the second-annual Family Color Run/Walk for Autism, hosted by the Upstate New York Autism Alliance (UNYAA) located out of Queensbury. The campground owners, Mike and Gina Lenhard, wanted to provide a family-inclusive event in support of autism. They had, in the past, had the Gaddor brothers wrestling show but wanted more of an interactive approach for families. Hence, the Lenhards reached out to the UNYAA. The director, Kristin Howarth, camped at Jellystone and was acquainted with the Lenhards and together they came up with the Color Run, now in its second year. “Twenty-seven years ago I had a camper with a child who would come into our store and knock things down, a couple times he broke something,” Gina Lenhard said. “This was at a time when there wasn’t much awareness about autism. When I approached the mother of the unruly child, she informed me, “Well, you know he has autism, right?” and

Raffles with prizes for adults and children were also on site. “This is an awesome place, we really like coming here,” Howarth said. “This Color Run helps us to offset the price of a camp program we offer in August to 15 to 20 families. It provides so many experiences to these kids and allows for them to get together and do some really great things.”

Cost for the event was $20 or less, depending on age, and cheaper if pre-registered before the day of the event with the UNYAA. The tickets included entry into the Run/Walk, BBQ lunch, and day use of the grounds (including pools). Children bounced on the jumping pillow, explored the playgrounds and shot out of

In August, UNYAA partners again with Jellystone Campground to provide their Camp Ohana program, a three-night stay at the resort with Hawaiian themed activities for the sponsored families. The UNYAA website states Camp Ohana is “fun filled Hawaiian style activities in the heart of the Adirondacks.” Music, crafts, water sports, parent events, dancing and other activities are scheduled for the fully-booked 2019 camp weekend. UNYAA is an organization run and supported by volunteers, many of which are parents of children/adults affected by autism. Jellystone Park is open daily 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. during the summer and provides day-use as well as longer stays for campers. Families can support, join and keep up to date on what the UNYAA is doing around the community by visiting their website at upstatenyautism.org and Facebook page at facebook.com/upstatenyautismalliance. ■

tered milfoil, and a green copper shad-colored Luck-E-Strike Series 3 square-billed crankbait on rocks and in looser grass. A few fish early in the tournament bit a Luck-E-Strike Pow Stik, rigged with either a 3/16- or ¼ounce Bass Pros Shops tungsten weight, and a black and blue Bass Pros Shops tube. He also ran a ½-ounce Trophy Swim Jig through lily pads and pencil reeds in shallow water.
“It’s been a long time coming. I’ve been doing this for eight years now and on a couple of different tours. I’ve had the opportunity to win several times and haven’t gotten it done, so today is a pretty special day,” said Scanlon, who earned his first career win in FLW Tour competition. “I’ve been fishing tournaments since I was 15 and it’s not easy out here, but days like this make it all worth it.” Scanlon spent the event targeting largemouth down near Ticonderoga. Early in the tournament, most of his bass came off shallow rock inside of a milfoil edge. As the tournament progressed, though, he caught more fish from the grass, with all of his keepers today coming from the grass. “I did junk it up a little bit, but I got myself in some decent areas, and I tried to make the most out of them by switching baits and trying some different stuff throughout the tournament,” said Scanlon. Scanlon did have a primary area that produced his initial limits on days one through three – a pair of main-lake points along Champlain’s eastern shoreline that were swept by current. On Sunday, the area didn’t produce, but he was able to make the necessary adjustments to put together a solid limit. “The fish were obviously using the current to feed, and there was bait there, which was a big key,” said Scanlon. “You’d see a lot of activity in the grass. That’s probably the main reason those fish were there.” In his areas, Scanlon used a ⅜-ounce chartreuse and white Z-Man ChatterBait with a white soft jerkbait trailer for rocks and scat-

“Depending on the cover I’d always start with a moving bait, usually the ChatterBait, and when it was sparser grass I’d use the crankbait. When I’d catch a few, I would slow down and pick it apart with the Pow Stik,” said Scanlon. “I was just fortunate to dial into the fish every day – locations and baits changed daily on me.” With his win, Scanlon earned enough points to qualify for the FLW Cup – the world championship of bass fishing – Aug. 9-11 on Lake

Public Health director recognized Linda Beers honored with leadership award By Laura Achouatte STA FF W RITER

Beers was nominated by Susan Lopez Allott, director of preventive services of Essex County Public Health. Democrats debate
Opinion
The first Democrat Presidential Debates for 2020 have been held, and now the process of culling the herd has begun. By Dan Alexander It’s pretty evident that • PUBLISHER • this first round of debates was much like the opening round of a boxing match. Each of the 20 candidates was cautious not wanting to make a major error nor trying to discredit a fellow Democrat. It was evident that each was feeling out the process. Sooner or later, the gloves will come off to ultimately settle the nomination. From someone who resides on the conservative side of independent, many of the themes discussed seemed like a major departure from past Democrat debates; when the talking points between Democrat or Republican candidates never seemed quite so far apart. Perhaps it is more my age than political persuasion but while the old adage used to be, America, Love it or Leave it, today might be more appropriate to say America, Don’t like it, Just Change it. It will be interesting to watch the older candidates hold their ground against the young up and coming crowd who feel more in touch with younger generation voters. While politics is a tough business; I find it unfair to compare today’s social attitudes to those from 40 years ago. Senator Harris’ attack on Vice President Biden’s actions in the past working with segregationist senators to pass legislation may register with younger voters, but it is hard to use today’s attitudes to judge actions back then with what were normal attitudes of the day. I’m certain if our history holds true to form socially accepted positions today, right or wrong, will be judged inappropriate at some time in the future. I also struggle with the positions regarding undocumented immigrants. As an employer, I can’t hire nor pay an undocumented immigrant, despite the tight labor market. I don’t understand how so many of them can be in the country and supporting themselves, yet the candidates discussed how they pay into the social security system but can’t receive benefits. With a nation so far in debt, offering health care, education and other taxpayerfunded benefits would not have been so well received just a few short years ago. While not likely to succeed, I thought John Delaney’s approach to the issues were more common sense based. As the debate season continues into the fall, it will be interesting to watch how the candidates will differentiate themselves on some of the major issues, as right now many seemed to be bunched up. Will breaking out from the pack prove to be the successful path to the nomination or just the fast track home? Stay tuned as the campaigns continue to evolve. ■

» American Legion Cont. from pg. 1 Within months of that first charter, Essex County veterans of World War I came together to secure benefits, outreach, policy, education and community support for thousands of men and women who served. When World War II ended, the organization expanded its charter to include all war veterans and added 160,000 members within months. And at that time, the Town of Lewis formed its post through efforts of George Hugh Smith who had served as charter member of the National Post of the American Legion, and county commander. Early newspaper accounts put the organizational meeting date in Lewis at Sept. 17, 1945. The original charter designates Post 1319 on Dec. 27, 1945. Officers formally installed on that date were: Commander George H. Smith; First Vice Commander Fred MaCray; Second Vice Commander Carlyle C. Cross; Third Vice Commander Grover C. Cornwright; along with Angus E. McPhail, adjutant; Gordon H. Daniels, service officer; Albert A. Morrison, finance officer; John A. Hathaway, chaplain; LeRoy Hathaway, historian; William Hathaway, sergeant-at-arms; and G.H. Smith, co-committeeman. Charter

The original charter of Lewis American Legion Post No. 1319 dates to Dec. 27, 1945, and lists the founding members. members also included John H. Bill, Ronald Road, about three houses past the Post Office.
‘HARD BUILDING TO HEAT’
R. Brown, Fred K. Sheldon, Wallace Richards, Carlton J. Cross and Thomas J. Cross. American Legion Post 1319 established a permanent building committee along with its membership, house and finance committees. The Lewis American Legion Auxiliary No. 1319 was founded two years later, in February 1947, with 20 charter members under the leadership of Sara Burres, who then served as the county’s legion auxiliary chairwoman. In December 1945, the Lewis post purchased the unused Methodist Church, which was on County Route 10, the Lewis-Wadhams
After 40 years, on June 6, 1985, Lewis legionnaires sold the building to a nearby resident for $2,000. Most of the furniture was sold, along with a moose mount, pews and plumbing fixtures, but the bell from the former church steeple was given to the Lewis Volunteer Fire Department. Having fallen into disrepair in decades since, the church was torn down last year. Commander of American Legion Post No. 1319 now is David Blades, former Town of
» Measles Cont. from pg. 1 “There is a continued ongoing transmission of measles in communities in NYS with the majority of cases in those who are unvaccinated or undervaccinated. Since October 1, 2018, there have been 932 cases reported in NYS: including 267 in Rockland County, 49 in Orange County, 18 in Westchester County, 8 in Sullivan County, and 588 in New York City,” the memo states. As of June 14, there are 344 confirmed cases among those counties stated in the memo. The area of upstate New York has been clear of measles transmissions. Children who are attending child day care or public, private or parochial school, and who had a religious exemption, must now receive first dose by June 28, and by July 4 have evidence of appointment for a follow-up dose. There is no current status on specifics for camps, nor were camps included in the wording.

Lewis supervisor. Based on historical records, Blades said the post sold the building as membership began to dwindle in the mid-1980s. “It was a very hard building to heat,” Blades said. But with community support, the legion is adding a new monument to veterans from their town. Membership in the American Legion in Lewis is at 23, with zero percent change since last year. They remain very active in town. Members of the American Legion here are part of a Veterans Park Committee that has worked steadily for over three years to research, design and build a memorial park beside the town hall. Three large placques researched and engraved so far include names of all town residents who served. “Even though we have members from the American Legion on the Veterans Park Committee, it’s really a community-wide effort,” Blades said, to be clear, indicating the work of Town Historian Jeanne Dickerson and Emma Jean (Cross) O’Kusky are central to the effort. O’Kusky’s husband, Carl, has donated his time to build the majority of rock work at the park. “The whole committee has put in a lot of time,” Blades said. “Right now we are almost at the end stage. We probably have 75 percent of the names done. We have one more plaque we have to research names for, from the Vietnam War and forward. A lot of people have put a lot of work into this.”
tive services at Essex County Public Health said, “I have sent out a mass email to school administrations, nurses and educators of the county on the measles legislation that went through last Friday. We have sent out measles posters and preventative education materials to camps, to heighten camp awareness. We have addressed the Essex County Board of Supervisors. We also have taken ads out in the paper and are posting regularly on our Facebook site to get the information out there. “We are only able to give information to promote, prevent and to educate at the time being. Public Health motto is ‘Prevention, Promotion, Protect.’” Public Health informed The Sun that Camp Dudley in Westport requires up-to-date vaccinations for campers, but was unsure about other camps’ policies. It is recommended that if your children are attending a camp this summer, you should know the camp policy on vaccinations for your child/children.

Names of veterans from Lewis are listed in raised-relief on bronze dating back to the Revolutionary War. Veterans are named from the War of 1812 and the Civil War, along with 20th-century conflicts: World Wars I and II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. The Veterans Park Committee is documenting every Lewis veteran they can find, Blades said, and will add names from Iraq and Afghanistan Wars once the confl icts are officially declared over. “This summer we want to attach the fourth plaque and are planning a dedication for Oct. 5,” Blades said. “We still have some landscaping to do. And we’re waiting for a piece of military hardware, it’s a canon from World War I. We’re getting it from a military base in Vermont.” Lewis American Legion Post No. 1319 will meet throughout the summer to flesh out details of the dedication ceremony. The center stone in the Lewis Veterans Park is, “dedicated to all in this community who served in the armed forces during times of war and peace.” “If there are families out there and we have forgotten a loved one, please let us know,” Blades said. “We can add them in the future.” ■
POLICIES IN PLACE
At previous Board of Supervisor meetings through May and June, there was much discussion on how much control camps would have over what policies are in place regarding vaccinations. For now, it seems there is not a uniform decision on the policies that are in place beyond the regulatory law passed this June. “If we can decide who comes to our youth programs and camps based on vaccinations, then Moriah will definitely require vaccinations,” said Tom Scozzafava, Town of Moriah supervisor. “It’s important to keep up our levels of herd immunity so that those that just can’t be vaccinated because they are too ill, such as a premature baby, don’t get needlessly ill and unable to fight it,” Allot said. “I believe in children getting vaccinated,” said Linda Beers, Public Health director. ■ a.m. & 5:30 p.m.; Sunday School 9:30 a.m.; Tuesday Prayer Service 7 p.m.; Wednesday Bible Study 7 p.m.

Unified hoops fulfills, rewards all involved
“That is the point of it,” said Robert Sutphen, Section VII coordinator. “To put everyone into a greater umbrella atmosphere in the school. You are starting to see senior nights at these schools where students have played three or four years and it has really started to entrench itself and it is something that everybody looks forward to.”

BEEKMANTOWN | Checking into the game, it was obvious Holly Bedard was excited to get onto the court and play some ball. The Peru player walked out onto the court, but was not sure where she should go to play defense at the time. Almost immediately, teammate Teagan Seymore walked up to Bedard, took her by the hand and directed her into the post, where the two made up part of the zone defense the Indians were playing. After the game, Seymore said it was as helpful for her as it was for Bedard. “I get a little lost if they are not out there, so my main goal was to try and help my teammates and get them to where they needed to play.” For the players who are getting an experience to play a varsity sport through unified basketball in Section VII — a program which has been in place for three full seasons through a partnership with NYSPHSAA and Special Olympics New York — the year has been fulfilling. “I have been playing since ninth grade and everyone puts their hearts into the game no matter what happens,” Lexie Hackett of Beekmantown said. “When we see people struggling we try to help them out and make sure everyone is smiling at the end of the day.” “I got to meet a few new friends, not only from my team,” said Beekmantown’s Bronson Agoney (teammates call him, “LeBronson”). “I just wanted to make sure I was there for all the players and help them up if they fell down. Just be there and have a great time. That’s all that matters for seasons on end and all sports you play.” When Ticonderoga’s Taylor Bolton talked about the season, her answer made coach

Man charged with DWI misdemeanors
The day after the Section VII unified finale
POLICE BLOTTER
CHARLTON | A Charlton man was arrested twice in two days by Lake Placid Police Department. Gregory L. Hildebrand, 50, was arrested June 15 for allegedly driving while intoxicated and leaving the scene of a property damage accident at 11:45 p.m. Hildebrand was charged with

was the Section VII track and field championships. As a key member of the team, Saranac all-star soccer and track athlete Shayne O’Neill would have been justified in saying he was not going to be at unified with one of the biggest meets of the year coming up. But O’Neill was there, helping players get to the right spots on the court and finding them when open to try and get as many players involved as possible. “It has always been a good thing I have seen going on and I decided I wanted to join the unified team and help them,” O’Neill said. “It is a great thing to do and it makes them all so happy. It is something they are going to remember for the rest of their lives.”
DWI blood alcohol content greater than 0.08 percent, a misdemeanor; DWI, a misdemeanor; and leaving the scene of a property damage accident, an infraction. Hildebrand was then released on $250 bail. The next day, police were called to a fight outside a local business where he allegedly confronted an individual involved with the previous incident. During the confrontation, Hildebrand allegedly attempt-
ed to strike the individual and caused damage to their vehicle. Police said he then tried to avoid arrest after police arrival and was caught after a brief foot pursuit. Hildebrand was arraigned in Village Court and remanded to the Essex County Jail in lieu of $5,000 cash or $10,000 bail bond. An order of protection was issued to the victim. ■ » Blotter Cont. on pg. 10

CHIMNEY SWEEP
Earlier in the season, Peru traveled to Saranac for a special unified basketball game. The tipoff was at 1:30 p.m., during the middle of the school day. Local news outlets came to cover the game, where the entire Saranac student body was in attendance, wearing white T-shirts and helping to raise funds for Special Olympics New York. “It was a very fun game and it was very close,” Gaboriault said. “I got to be on the news.” “The game at our school was amazing and the feeling that it brought to me was just amazing — I would have never pictured something like that,” O’Neill said. “That was a great way to promote the program,” Sutphen said about the game. “That has to be framed as part of the message that this is not just two teams playing. We are not going to take Peru and Beekmantown’s football teams out of school for a noon kickoff on a Wednesday. We are doing this because we want people to be aware of it and so schools can see this is an inclusive event and an opportunity for students who did not traditionally fit into the athletic realm to be included and part of their team and a part of their school.” ■ — This story is part two in a series on unified basketball in Section VII, which also appears in the most recent edition of North Country Living, published by Sun Community News and Printing.

When your family suffers a loss, we want to help you let your friends and neighbors know. Each week we will publish a list of Death Notices at no charge. These notices will include name, date of death & birth, age, town and the name of the funeral home in charge of the arrangements. Like most newspapers, we do need to charge a small fee of $65 for a 250-word obituary which will include a picture (if supplied) in the paper. Larger sizes are also available. If the funeral home doesn’t place the obituary in The SUN you may submit an obituary by calling 518-873-6368, or you may email the Obituary to shannonc@suncommunitynews.com, and she will let you know the cost if it’s over 250 words.
