The sixty artists chosen this time again show the amazing variety of ideas, talent and techniques we have in New Zealand, which judging from their own sales is finding a very receptive market, not only here but in some cases internationally. The mediums used range from pastel to polystyrene, and this book shows a representative sample of each artists work. It also gives brief biographical details of their art background; often how they got started, where they made breakthroughs, awards and significant events that shaped their success today. Creativity of any type is by necessity a very solitary occupation. It is just the artist with their imagination, eyes and hands working together in total collaboration, using whatever medium they need or prefer to reach a yet unknown final goal. It would also seem that formal art training can liberate and develop talent in some cases, but also many of these artists are selftaught or have developed from an opportunity they have seen and taken at some time in their lives. Browse through the variety of stunning images from these talented New Zealanders, and keep this book as a future reference to follow the progress of the artists you admire. Contact details for them are on the last page. You will get hours of pleasure and inspiration from the pages of this book.
Denis Robinson has been involved with art most of his life. After training in art and design in Wellington he worked as a designer in marketing before travelling overseas where he spent some time as a tour guide to the great art museums of Europe. On his return to New Zealand, Denis opened New Zealand’s first design office/creative studio in Wellington. Since moving to Auckland he has managed a number of prominent art galleries and initiated the inaugural Auckland Art Fair in 2005. His work as an art consultant along with the experience gained operating gallery tours has given him unique access to the portfolios of New Zealand’s most popular contemporary artists. He is a leading authority on currently practising artists throughout New Zealand as shown in his books – New Zealand’s Favourite Artists2, New Zealand: A Painted Country New Zealand in Watercolour New Zealand on Canvas New Zealand Gallery Artists’ Impressions of New Zealand Christchurch - an Artists’ Tribute When not travelling Denis lives on the Hibiscus Coast north of Auckland from where he operates his own art and design consultancy, connecting artists with art lovers. New Zealand’s Favourite Artists 2
Introduction It has always interested me to see at art awards or exhibitions where there is a “people’s choice’” vote, that the winners of the people’s choice are usually different from those works to which the judges award prizes. This shows up the wide gap between so-called art critics and what New Zealanders really like for visual pleasure and enjoyment in their lives, and this is borne out in the sales popularity of my first book of New Zealand’s favourite artists, published in 2006. For this second volume I have used the same criteria in gathering artists for selection: I invited more than eighty dealer galleries throughout the country to nominate their top-selling artists and any newer artists who were attracting the interest of art lovers. I also listened to a network of advisers who let me know of other artists who were making an impact in particular regions. This information, coupled with my own research, gave me a wide range from which to choose and resulted in the selection you now see in this book – the popular people’s choice. The sixty artists chosen this time, again demonstrate a variety of ideas, techniques and talent. Judging by the sales of their work, they are finding a very receptive market both here in New Zealand and also internationally in some cases. Most works herein are two-dimensional paintings, but there are a few that stretch the boundaries, like Aaron Kereopa’s carving and painting polystyrene, and the photographical painting with light that Wendy Leach has developed. While this book shows only a small sample of each artist’s work, it also gives brief biographical details of their art background;
often how they got started, where they made breakthroughs, and awards and significant events that have shaped their success today. Creativity of any type is by necessity a very solitary occupation. It is just the artist with their imagination, eyes and hands working together in total collaboration, using whatever medium they need or prefer to reach a yet-unknown goal. Having visited many of the artists and seen their places of work, which range from purpose- designed-and-built studios to the corner of a garage, a converted bedroom or just a kitchen table, it seems that great work will find its outlet regardless of the working environment. It would also seem that formal art training can liberate and develop talent in some cases, but also many of these artists are self-taught or have developed from an opportunity they have seen and taken at some time in their lives. It never fails to excite me when the book eventually takes its final shape after months of work, as I browse through the variety of stunning images from these talented New Zealanders. Please keep the book as a future reference and follow the progress of the artists you admire. You will find contact details for galleries at which they exhibit, on the back page. I hope you will get hours of pleasure and inspiration from the pages of this book.

Garrick Tremain
1941
born in Palmerston North
1957
left school to pursue a farming career in Hawkes Bay but a perceived artistic talent took him to the city to test his abilities in the commercial art world
1959
for ten years he worked in advertising agencies in New Zealand, Asia and Europe but always harboured a desire to return to the rural environment in which his working life had begun
1964
while travelling England, drawing country homes on commission, it became obvious that life as a landscape painter might offer the perfect work and lifestyle combination
1969
with his wife, Jill, he returned to New Zealand to pursue that ideal
In the past twenty years Garrick Tremain has become well known as a widely published political cartoonist but has earned his living as a professional painter for much longer
Garrick is best known for his work in the watercolour medium but occasional oils, acrylics and egg temperas find their way onto his gallery walls.

Since 1971 home has been the Wakatipu Basin, with Central Otago and southern Westland providing much of the subject matter for his work.
