How to Take Care of Your Teeth Thankfully today with better at-home dental care products and those *in-office* treatments at dental clinics people are keeping their natural teeth for longer than ever before. There are some diseases and conditions that can make tooth loss more likely but we now have greater control over being able to keep our teeth as we age. The two most important things you can do for your teeth is to brush and to floss each and every day! Many of the problems inside your mouth are caused by plaque. Plaque is a sticky layer of bacteria that forms on your teeth from leftove its of food and it’s the a te ia inside the pla ue that causes the cavities in your teeth. Plaque can also lead to gum disease, this is a very serious infection as it can destroy the tissues around your teeth and damage bone. The best thing you can do for your teeth is to remove the plaque BEFORE it has a chance to build up and start causing problems. Flossing removes plaque from between your teeth, while brushing removes plaque from the large surfaces of your teeth and just under the gums.

Brushing and flossing your teeth You have probably been brushing and flossing your teeth for years your dentist has probably even praised you for doing a good job, but unfortunately many people are NOT doing it properly. Your dentist has told you, you should clean your teeth for 2 minutes – but how many of you actually clean your teeth for that long? There are 4 simple steps to care for your teeth and gums

● Floss your teeth every day – at bedtime ● Brush your teeth morning and night with a good fluoride toothpaste for at least 2 minutes ● Cut down on the number of snacks you have each day ● Visit your dental clinic every 6 months for a checkup with your dentist

How to floss your teeth ● Pull out 45 to 60 cms of dental floss from the dispenser ● Wrap the ends around your middle and index fingers ● Hold the dental floss tightly around each tooth in a C shape and move the floss in a push-pull motion up and down against the side of each tooth

How to brush your teeth properly ● Place the toothbrush at a 45 degree angle along the gum line, move the toothbrush in a back and forth motion over every tooth ● Place the toothbrush on the inside and brush the inside of your teeth using the same motion ● Brush the tops of your teeth ● Use the tip of the brush to brush behind each tooth – front and back, top to bottom using up and down strokes
