How Long Does A Filling Last?


Temporary Fillings It is an intermediate filling that can be used for various reasons and as the name implies, it is temporary and does not last for long period. It usually lasts for around six to eight weeks but those who have poor oral hygiene can undergo destruction. Also, they do not offer the same protection level as permanent fillings do.


Permanent Fillings This treatment offers complete sealing of tooth in order to prevent bacterial growth. However this seal does not last forever. The permanent filling has a limited lifespan. This filling depends on the patient's preference in terms of budget and their requirement. These fillings are of mainly three types. ➢ Gold Fillings ➢ Silver Fillings ➢ White Fillings


Gold Fillings These fillings are also known as inlays and it is an alloy of gold, copper, and other metals. It includes the direct filling of gold. Due to a golden colour, some patients do not prefer to have this filling but its lasting period is almost two decades. Also, these are the expensive dental fillings and the process needs more than one visit to complete these fillings.


Silver Fillings These fillings are strong and durable as it can between 10 to 15 years. Its silver colour can be less noticeable to anterior teeth. It is great to fill decayed areas of teeth. The level of mercury in silver amalgam has raised concern among patients and discouraged its use.


White Fillings These are the most popular fillings and are specially designed to match the teeth. They are made with resins which contain quartz or glass. It also offers long-lasting protection for cavities and it lasts for 7-10 years. This needs minimum drilling and has been successful to seal the cavity.
