Why Tooth Decay Happens

WhyTooth DecayHappens

Tooth decay, also known as dental caries or cavities, occurs when the hard outer layer of the teeth, known as enamel, is damaged by bacteria and acids in the mouth

the process of tooth decay begins when bacteria in the mouth feed on sugar and other carbohydrates in the foods we eat and produce acid as a byproduct

This acid can dissolve the minerals in the tooth enamel, leading to the formation of small pits or holes in the tooth surface

If left untreated, the decay can spread deeper into the tooth, eventually reaching the softer, more vulnerable inner layers of the tooth, including the dentin and pulp

At this point, the decay can cause pain, sensitivity, and infection, and may require more extensive dental treatment, such as a root canal or even tooth extraction
