WELCOME The wait is finally over, after a long 3 years, the British Dental Conference and Dentistry Show returns for 2022. We hope that our pre-show magazine will give you some exciting insights into what you can expect from the event this May. Throughout the magazine you will find details of the 14 theatres to be featured at the show, the hours of CPD content, some of the fantastic speakers you can hear from and the wide variety of topics to be presented, discussed and debated. Of course, we can’t talk about the education on offer without mentioning the BDA Theatre – where BDA-selected speakers will deliver the association’s annual conference content for all to benefit from. It goes without saying that BDCDS is more than a platform for learning. There will be plenty to see and do across the bustling trade

VISIT MOUTH CANCER FOUNDATION AT BDCDS Not long to go now until the British Dental Conference and Dentistry Show at the NEC in Birmingham! We are excited to be exhibiting on stand D71, thanks to CloserStill Media, where we will be showcasing our latest initiative, Saving Voices, educating on the importance of checking for mouth cancer and signing up participants for the Mouth Cancer 10KM Awareness Walk -www. mouthcancerwalk.org. The Mouth Cancer Foundation’s latest initiative aims to save the voices of mouth, throat, head and neck cancer patients at risk of losing them due to surgery or treatment and give back the power of speech. One way to save voices is to support voice preservation so that individuals can

continue to communicate in a voice that reflects their identity using the very latest voice banking technology. We have joined forces with two voice banking platforms to bring this opportunity for voice preservation. Once a voice is banked, the recordings can be used to create a personalised voice by an AI engine that enables the user to type messages that are converted to speech that sounds like the recipient. The charity also exists to educate and encourage the general public to sit up and take note that they should be checking themselves for mouth cancer at least once a month. Attracting and retaining the best team

ATTRACTING AND RETAINING THE BEST TEAM Attracting and keeping great staff is a priority for UK dental practices today. Only with a passionate, dedicated and experienced professional team can a practice consistently deliver exceptional patient care. However, recruitment difficulties and increasing demands on the team have made team building and retention challenging. Sarah Buxton, Head of Dental Employment Law and HR for FTA Law, will be exploring these challenges and offering some practical advice to help delegates improve their own staff retention and recruitment processes. “A fair salary is important to attract and keep good members of staff, but simply offering more money is not the answer. There are other incentives and benefits you can offer that are appreciated just as much. However, it’s vital for dental practices to offer these in accordance with the current regulations. For example, increasing holiday entitlement for employees the longer they stay with the business might seem a nice thing to do, but legally, it could be indirectly age discrimination. “If you’re found to be discriminatory, the consequences can be costly to the business – both in monetary terms and with regards to reputation. Compensation in an employment tribunal is unlimited, so there is a huge risk to the practice should things go awry. Some outside-the-box thinking may be required to better reward staff loyalty. For instance, rather than looking

at the minimum number or length of breaks that staff need throughout the day, instead consider what would most benefit their wellbeing. This is what employees are looking for today.” Though staff retention has always been crucial, Sarah reflects on the pandemic has made it even more important and difficult for dental practices across the UK: “It is absolutely more difficult to retain staff since the pandemic. The regulatory and SOP changes of the last few years have created a very difficult practice

Straumann Launches 2022 Charity Bike Ride

STRAUMANN LAUNCHES 2022 CHARITY BIKE RIDE Straumann is delighted to bring back the legendary Charity Bike Ride! This year, riders will take on approximately 500 miles from Bilbao to Sitges in Spain. The challenge will be welcome approximately 60 cyclists from the dental profession, who aim to raise a total of £75,000 for this year’s designated and very deserving charity – Dentaid. Dentaid works tirelessly to provide access to essential dental care for the most vulnerable people in our communities. With mobile units operating around the country, the charity often helps those experiencing homelessness, head and neck cancer patients, refugees and asylum seekers, looked after children, fishing communities and victims of domestic abuse. Dentaid CEO, Andy Evans, commented: “We are so excited to be partnering with Straumann for this year’s Charity Bike Ride. As a keen cyclist I am very much looking forward to joining the ride as the route looks fantastic and the event well organised. The funds raised will help more people of the most vulnerable people in our communities to access dentistry here in the UK. Hopefully during the ride I will also be able to inspire other riders to volunteer their time and skills to help us reach more people.” The Straumann Charity Bike Ride 2022 will help Dentaid purchase a new mobile dental unit so that even

more people can be given access to the basic dental care and support they desperately need. Harvey James, a dental technician, will be participating in this year’s Straumann Charity Bike Ride, making it his third cycling adventure with the team. He shares his experience and why he’s so keen to take on the challenge for 2022: “This is such a great trip because all the technicians and dentists involved are like a big family. It offers fantastic networking for me, with clinicians who use Straumann solutions participating too and it is a great opportunity to meet with clients outside dentistry away from the pressures of work. Plus, I’m giving something back to the industry and the community.

“The event itself is amazing. It’s very well organised and everything is taken care of for you, all you have to do is cycle for 8-9 hours a day. I’m a keen cyclist but it’s still hard work – 500 miles is no mean feat, with 100-mile rides 5 days on the bounce! Straumann always supports great charities, and I appreciate that we’re keeping things within the industry by working with Dentaid this year. “My advice for anyone thinking about taking on this kind of challenge in the future is to not underestimate the distance. Training is important and you need to build up the miles over the coming months. When you’re prepared, this is a brilliant experience. You go with a like-minded group who provide fantastic support and motivation throughout. Dental marketing The ‘magical formula’ is a bespoke approach

DENTAL MARKETING THE ‘MAGICAL FORMULA’ IS A BESPOKE APPROACH The online consumer experience has never been so key to business survival. As we all adapted to new ways of working, the pandemic propelled a mass of executives into the world of digital communications. For those without any previous online presence, it was a steep learning curve. According to Lloyds Bank, more than half of all UK spending has now shifted to online. They suggest COVID-19 has ‘fundamentally changed where and how we have spent our money over the last 12 months’. And, whilst any permanent shift in behaviour remains to be seen, there is an argument for continued engagement for those businesses looking to ride any further waves in this global health crisis. Of course, dentistry also took a hit in this derailing of the economy. Forced to shut doors from March until June 2020, it left practices bereft of patients and challenged in their bid to win back patient trust and deliver the care they always had but in a new COVID-19 world. For some practice owners, this served as a green light to up their game in their digital comms in order to future proof existing relationships with their patient base. So, if dental websites and the accompanying social media activity has remained static in the past 12 months ago, then dentists might be missing a trick. Dr Sam Jethwa has been described by colleagues as a perfectionist whose marketing strategy is second to none.

Consistent and frequent, social media has given Sam the opportunity to tell his story, drive people to his practice and develop a picture of his brand – swiftly and creatively – all to a highly engaged audience. These all help to break down the barriers for patients in a fun way. He also posts images of him lecturing, relaxing away from work, and even shares images of his mini sausage dog, Snoopy (who has his own Instagram account by the way) – imagery that helps to strip back the professional face and reveal something more relatable. Sam is also a perfectionist when it comes to interaction with patients, and he takes patient communications seriously. He says: ‘Our patient care coordinator will always respond to messages, reviews, and engage with any clients who follow our pages – frequently and rapidly.’ This ‘quick to respond’ approach can benefit the management of patient expectations, as well as boost patient numbers.

Key oral health messages also need to be shared in tandem with the other posts if practices are to demonstrate that the interests of potential patients lie at the very heart of what they do. Sam says: ‘Of course there is more to cosmetic dentistry than just amazing smiles, which is why it is so important to me that prospective patients who may find me on social media understand that’. ‘The functional elements of clinical dentistry are key to achieving a successful result and, as a clinic, we also share oral hygiene instructions, whitening videos, and other FAQs or top tips to help our patients, and anyone else who happens upon our account, with simple advice. We have worked with Oral-B to promote good brushing technique using the Oral-B Test Drive, which was very well received, as well as with its latest toothbrush model, the Oral-B iO – an interactive electric toothbrush that really helps to guide patients to achieve optimal coverage. Of course, there’s no point in a patient investing in expensive cosmetic work if they can’t master good oral hygiene and the iO gives them the guidance they need to perfect their technique.’ And for those yet to embrace a similar approach to Sam’s unique bespoke formula, there may be inspiration to be found in the cosmetic dentist’s Instagram account. Even though we’re many years after the initial announcement of contract reform, there is still no clarity or clear information coming forward that dentists can base decisions upon, so there is a collective anxiety across NHS dentistry. I expect this session to be particularly lively! Designed to ignite conversation and

debate, the Dental Business Theatre will also provide guidance on important issues like improving staff retention and maintaining mental health. Les continues: “Each session will be quite different, with some offering practical pointers on how to deal with an issue, such as enhancing mental health and wellbeing in the workplace and at home. Other sessions will be about elevating issues into people’s consciousness and providing a range of views from experts for them to take away, reflect upon and use to help make better informed decisions. The entire programme will be very interactive – we will be encouraging delegates to bring questions to the panel and also to comment on topics discussed to ensure a two-way conversation.” Practice Plan has programmed the Dental Business Theatre at BDCDS for several years now and Les shares why they were happy to return once again for 2022: “In many ways, this is a flagship event within the dental calendar. It’s always very dynamic, with lots of energy and it attracts great people who really engage. BDCDS also attracts decision-makers from practices, which is important for all exhibitors. Full-arch rehabilitation using six implants

FULL-ARCH REHABILITATION USING SIX IMPLANTS Dr Amit Patel shares his recent case, where he provided full-arch rehabilitation for a patient. A 62-year-old patient was considering a fixed solution as an alternative to the maxillary denture that she had worn for a while. Due to her dentures moving around in her mouth, she was experiencing pain when chewing, as well as difficulties speaking. This made her feel embarrassment and affected her confidence when eating and communicating with others. The treatment options were presented to the patient; no treatment, a replacement denture, a removable implant-retained denture or a fixed implant-retained full arch prosthesis. After giving the patient a comprehensive overview of each individual option, she stuck with her original preference for the fixed implant-retained prosthesis. This was due to its improved stability and comfort compared to removable options, as well as the achievable aesthetics.

TREATMENT PLANNINGI A radiograph and a CBCT scan were taken to assess the bone and whether it was of sufficient height and density. There were no pathologies present and the patient had adequate bone for implant placement, with no need to perform a bone graft. An intraoral scan of the upper and lower jaws was also taken which was then used to fabricate a 3D study model. This allowed me to evaluate certain factors such as the maxillomandibular relationships. A treatment plan was then devised and shared with the patient, noting the timeframe of the treatment, the costs and any potential risks or complications. After answering the patient’s queries, I emphasised her role in the maintenance of her oral health both during and after the treatment. Fully-informed consent was then obtained.

SURGERYI Six Straumann® BLX 3.75 diameter implants were selected as they are developed for optimal stability in all bone types due their thread design. Plus, the SLActive® surface is beneficial for reducing the healing and integration period. The surgery was performed under local anaesthesia. Once the incision was made in the maxilla, the alveoloplasty was performed. The sites were prepared with the Straumann® BLX, two implants were placed in the anterior region with two more placed at an angle in the premolar

region. A further two were placed in the second molar site to achieve maximum anterior-posterior spread of the implants. The soft tissue was sutured with a tension-free closure, to ensure successful healing and aesthetics. The patient was provided with a full denture to wear during the healing period so she was able to perform basic functions, such as eating and speaking. She was reminded that there may be some swelling, minor bleeding and some pain at the implant sites, and she was given all normal post-operative oral hygiene instructions.

POST-OPI After three months the patient returned. The implants had integrated successfully, radiographs were taken to assess the bone levels around the implants, and multi-unit abutments were then placed. The prosthetic metal frame was tried on the study model with composite teeth to assess the bite registration. The final prosthesis was then fitted in the mouth and the patient was very satisfied with the final outcome. Dental implants have become an increasingly viable option for partially- or fully- edentulous patients, improving their quality of life due to the stability, aesthetics and longevity of treatment. However, with all in things in dentistry good treatment planning is vastly important to ensure the patient receives the best possible outcome and a restoration that can be easily maintained by the patient. Radiographs are taken a yearly basis alongside periodontal probing of the implant abutments to assess any changes in the peri-implant tissues. Our work is carried out in partnership with community health workers, dentists, dental therapists, dental associations, and governments. We train people in oral health promotion, delivering community-based oral health education programmes and training other health workers to give emergency dental treatment. Our programmes focus on deprived communities in Africa - especially remote and rural ones. We work in these communities because these are the areas where the problem is worst. There is an extremely low level of oral health literacy, so communities are unaware of even basic health behaviours, or information such as the link between dietary sugars and dental disease. There is also little, if any, access to any kind of dental treatment. These left behind communities need the tools and knowledge to become stronger and more resilient, which is where we come in. Our approach is to listen to communities in need and ask, ‘How can we help?’. Through developing training specific to the needs of the community we ensure that the training we deliver is appropriate and effective.
