Dues Restructuring By Dr. Michael Scheidt, 2009–2010 President The #1 goal of MDDS is to serve, educate and represent you throughout your career. As a means to expand and improve existing services and to introduce many new value-added changes, MDDS has implemented a new dues restructuring plan, which will result in positive change for you and ensure that our business model will continue to extend beneficial services. This restructuring plan is in keeping with the policies of large local dental societies like ours. Depending on your member classification, you might notice an increase in your annual dues; however, you will also notice that your Rocky Mountain Dental Convention (RMDC) registration fee is now included, allowing the average member a savings of $113–$175 depending

on their dues category. See page 5 for details. Just as we all know that there is no such thing as a “free exam, cleaning and x-rays,” MDDS services also come at a cost. It may surprise you that only 14% of MDDS revenue comes from member dues. We rely on our RMDC for 75–80% of the remainder. Over the next several years, you will see significant changes in the RMDC. The fiscal engine that sustains our society will be more efficient and a more stable source of income — allowing us to expand our influence and effectiveness in other areas of importance to members. First Things: Lessons in Outdoor Humility by Dr. Matt Dunn, Editor Around the dental Around the dental office, from time to time, we have a lot of fun trying new things. Whether it be a new impression material, a Class II banding technique, a creative prep design for an onlay, or simply a novel bur tip — a bit of controlled experimentation has lead to occasional breakthroughs in practice. It has been tempting to apply these principles outside the office as well, where I’ve observed such experiments can be more difficult to control, and can offer instruction in personal humility. In addition to being novel and fun, they may tread that certain fine line between the breakthrough and the breakdown. In recent attempts to expand horizons in the athletic world, I’ve accumulated enough experiences that some of the lessons learned may be worth reviewing, in all their apparent discomfiture. These hard-won findings, in turn, may be applied back to the practice of dentistry. First Time Surfing: Costa Rica Standing on a sandy beach in southwest Costa Rica, it seemed simple enough, practicing jumping up into the standing surfer’s posture — arms out, ready for the pipeline. But lo and behold, out there in the actual water, with real waves pounding down on you, it somehow seems to become an impossible task. In my first roughly 100 attempts to get vertical on a surfboard, I failed on all 100 of them. Sometimes I would get one foot down but not the other, sometimes both feet down but on the wrong end of the board, and sometimes miscalculate altogether and not even touch the board. With each wipeout the nose, eyes and ears filled with saltwater, and once in a while the surfboard would clap the head for good measure. My surf instructor mentioned he was impressed at how much punishment I seemed able to take, and how willing I was to get up and make the same mistakes all over again. *Lesson: Once I finally became able to stand up a little, the experience proved worth all the trouble. Surfing is great fun, though it requires an insane level of persistence.

First Hut Trip: Benedict Hut, 10th Mountain Hut System The idea was to ski uphill into an isolated mountain hut and stay for a few days. Setting forth in shiny new outdoor equipment, it was to be my first experience on backcountry skis, with friction-enhancing “skins” underneath. The backpack was wonderful and all, with its fancy attachment called the “Avalung” to allow you to breathe if caught in an avalanche. The only trouble was, the tube was pressing deeply into my right shoulder, gradually grooving a wide welt. After about five miles of exacerbating shoulder pain — nearing the half-way point — I finally stopped and yanked the tubing out of the pack entirely, come what may. Moving on, I came to realize those shiny ski boots weren’t fitting so well around the heels, as each step devolved into a form of medieval torture. Still farther along, when the slope angles became too steep for a novice to climb without sliding backwards, I removed the skis and learned about something called “post holing” — where your body sinks all the way into the snow when you attempt to make any kind of movement. *Lesson: Needless to say, this first hut trip took just about forever — but ended up creating a new outdoor past time, in spite of sundry physical wounds. Since that inaugural expedition, I’ve made a point of thoroughly test-driving new equipment before setting out. First Triathlon: Boulder Jumping into the water in a new wetsuit at the start of my first triathlon, I noticed that everyone else in the event was a faster swimmer than I was. It was an easy observation to make, as some of my competitors swam literally right over the top of me. I made it easy for them to do this, thanks to my tendency to sink when trying to swim. Once firmly settled in the back of the pack (BOP), I managed to keep my position for the entire rest of the race. It became apparent that my presence in the event was good for everyone else’s self-esteem. Towards the end of the last leg, the running portion, I noticed I was being passed by people of all shapes and sizes who had started the race in divisions long after my own. So each passage was worse than it actually appeared. Since each triathlete had their age marked onto the

back of their right calf, I observed people decades my senior galloping by without even seeming to be tired. One small grandmotherly type — aged 73 — streamed past and was courteous enough to tell me: “You can do it! Only a little further!” She was right, but by the time I made it to the finish line, I was certain she was already back at home playing with her grandkids. *Lesson: It is very difficult to pre-judge anyone’s abilities. Our elders have learned a few things over the years, and we in turn can learn from them — while appreciating their encouragement. First Scuba Dive: Domenica Reading the scuba manual onboard the boat headed out into the Caribbean, I figured it shouldn’t really be too difficult. All you had to do was mimic the people in the little animated pictures and breathe through the mouthpiece. But once I had suited up and jumped into the water, I immediately discovered what a challenge it can be to control one’s depth level while inspecting a reef. After a few hours of erratically bobbing up and down — from the surface to 15 feet below and then back to the surface — my instructor finally shook his head and encouraged me to take up snorkeling for the rest of the day. I agreed it was a good idea, and ended up enjoying far more quality time with the tropical fish. *Lesson: Some pursuits require more practice and advance preparation than others. On the occasions when something is obviously not working, it can make sense to change course altogether. I could go on to describe eerily similar experiences with kayaking, Rollerblading, skate-skiing and mountain climbing — among other maiden efforts — but the lessons learned would be variations on the same themes, and might encapsulate too much personal embarrassment in one printed essay. In the end, however, while these experiments seemed trying at the time, they whetted the appetite for further activity, and did eventually reveal themselves as the breakthroughs that they were. Translated back to the dental office, we may conclude it best to approach “the new” with a degree of skepticism, or even alarm, but that we ought to make a point of approaching it from time to time — for it might just prove worthwhile.

Facebook®, YouTube®, Twitter®, LinkedIn® and blogs have captured the attention of your patients. One hundred and fifty million people around the world are now actively using Facebook and almost half of them are using it every day. Traditional marketing budgets, used formerly for direct mail, newspapers, magazines and the yellow pages, are being moved into online segments, such as search, email and social media marketing (according to Forrester, March/April 2009). The immense popularity of these social networks means ideas, opinions and information will be shared among friends in ways unheard of in the past. For dentists eager to develop programs in social media marketing, it’s wise to proceed with caution. Consider social media marketing as amplified communication. For example, unlike a printed advertisement, posts sent into social networks can initiate dialogue — good or bad. You must expect that any offer, content or view you share in those networks may be seen by existing patients, potential new patients and cyberspace. a group of patients, during which you introduce a special offer. When you mention the offer, will the group ignore you? In social situations, it’s likely they will ask questions, make comments and expect responses. This is the key difference between traditional advertising and social marketing. Be prepared for your posts to stimulate two-way conversation. Also, keep in mind, social networks are not a place for spam or relentless advertising. Communicate well and be responsive. If you are fortunate enough to have

patients respond to you, don’t abandon the conversation. You would never walk away if a patient was talking to you. Similarly, inviting patients to participate with your Facebook page and then never revisiting the account is considered poor social behavior. Be personable, not personal. Do you talk politics, religion or share details about your personal life with your patients? If so, keep it offline. Unless what you say is something you would not mind being broadcast on the six o’clock news, keep it private. Likewise, should patients inquire with personal health-related, clinical or financial questions, ask them to phone the office instead.

Turns out dentists across the country are reporting an increase in patients with bruxism and suspect that increased stress is to blame. Dr. John Bassett was kind enough to represent MDDS on FOX 31’s new “Everyday” talk show on June 11. He sat down with Libby Weaver and Natalie Tysdale to discuss indications, causes, harmful effects and how dentists can help. Dentists by nature are entrepreneurial spirits. Of course they need a job after dental school, but be very clear about what you are offering. If you are not offering a true equity position, expect and plan for a revolving door after a couple of years, if not sooner. It’s not that your practice isn’t a good deal for them or a great experience, but the majority of dentists still want their own piece of the pie. Do not promise to sell a portion of your practice if that is not what you really want or plan to do. Instead hire the “right type” of person to fill your needs. The perfect associate should: 1. Be honest and upfront about his or her future plans and desires 2. Possess the skills and personality that fits your practice culture 3. Meet all of the legal and ethical standards of your practice 4. Have a good work ethic — show up on time; come back from breaks when expected and stay until the job is finished 5. Be someone who does not want ownership 6. Understand and not dispute a reasonable non-competition clause in your associate agreement Consider a retired dentist or one who has owned his or her business in the past. Most of these dentists are the cream of the crop! Their skills are usually superior and their ability to work with dental team members and patients is exceptional. They have no desire to steal your business away; rather they thrive on enjoying the clinical experience of patient treatment and they can usually adjust to any schedule…one day, two days, four days one week and one day the next week, etc. The “perfect associate” is an exaggeration. Don’t be fooled. The “perfect practice” is too! However, defining what you are truly looking for in an associate relationship is the most logical and honest way to approach bringing someone into your practice. With an established objective, you begin your relationship on the right foot. I believe there are three parts to every business, the financial aspect, the operational aspect and, most, importantly the relationship aspect. When you know why you want an associate and are able to target that type of individual, your opportunity for success increases exponentially. It’s All Up to Somebody

Volunteer Thank You The 9Health Fair provides free health awareness and screenings throughout Colorado each April. Thank you to the 2009 MDDS volunteers for representing the dental profession at the 9Health Fair. Your efforts reflect positively on dentistry and its dedication to community service and prevention.

By Lawrence E. Howes, MBA, CFP® So far the second quarter has offered weary portfolios some long overdue sunshine and warmth. The market was up 20% or so in April, and there should be some clear direction here shortly, with perhaps just a hint of how and where we can start to recoup a bunch of lost money. This anticipated growth in the markets suggests that a budding market recovery of some kind is in the works. On a note of caution, there is nothing predictable about the returns from recoveries or even the length of them; however, corrections are replaced by recoveries and this recovery is starting to take shape… Most of the US Government programs, as well as many global efforts, designed to help this crisis have done what they were supposed to do — put money into the system and restore confidence. Not all is rosy just yet; however the prospects of an economic collapse have abated if not completely disappeared. It is an interesting state of affairs when I look at this financial meltdown, because most of the root causes were diagnosed and promising treatments were underway in less than seven months - some relatively quick action was taken by both the Bush and Obama administrations. Not bad, and as usual, there is little credit given to how resourceful the US financial system really is. Before the construction cranes start to refill the skyline again, the one really big player must return to the game — the US consumer. The low-cost manufacturers across the globe have realized that without the open wallets of the basic US consumer the wheels of production literally grind to a halt. There has been some paltry spending so far this year, but the real dollars are being saved for the rainy day that is now upon many. Before our economy warms up, spending has to increase. Before the global economies warm up, US consumers have to get motivated and start buying things. Nothing new here — it is the basic multiplier of money. Now the gauge to watch on the health of the economy is how quickly money goes from one hand to another. Not whether or not there is any money at all. It is a tragedy when you look at all the lost jobs, hopes and aspirations caused by this correction; however, there is a great deal of good that is coming from the aftermath. 2009 is going to be interesting. RMDC 2010 Member Registration As the Rocky Mountain Dental Convention evolves to better serve you, you will notice changes involving MDDS member convention registration. Because your 2010 convention registration fee is now included in your annual dues, we would like you to be aware of our new processes. Important dates and policies

No later than January 8, 2010: If you pay your 2010 membership dues in full by January 8, 2010, your registration will be processed at no fee. PLEASE NOTE: If you register for RMDC 2010 before paying your 2010 dues, your registration will automatically be placed on “hold” status until full payment of your 2010 dues is verified. Once payment is verified, your registration will be confirmed. You may register as early as September.

After January 8, 2010: If you have registered for the convention, but have not paid your membership dues in full, you will be charged the non-ADA member fee of $599 to attend the convention. Once the $599 has been paid, your registration will be processed.

n

No Later than March 31, 2010: If you subsequently pay your 2010 dues in full by March 31, 2010, MDDS will gladly reimburse the $599 registration fee.

n

After March 31, 2010: If you have not paid your 2010 dues in full by March 31, 2010, your registration fee of $599 will not be reimbursed.

n

Registration of staff

The registration process for your staff, including hygienists, dental assistants and front office personnel will remain the same. You may register your staff online at the same time that you register yourself by simply choosing the option “add another” or register them as you have always done on the registration form. Register staff by October 30 for the lowest price of $79 per person. Register by December 18 for $89 and after December 18 for $99. Reserved seating

If you register online: Log onto the RMDC registration page at rmdconline.com and be sure to select the MDDS member link. From there you can choose the courses you are interested in attending and reserve a guaranteed seat.

MDDS Takes the Annual Meeting Out to the Ballpark Sporting their favorite baseball jerseys, over 120 MDDS members, guests and friends of the dental community teamed up at Coors Field to celebrate the 112th Annual Meeting & Society Dinner. Attendees enjoyed an hors d’oeuvres reception held on home plate and enjoyed the ceremonies from the best seats in the house — behind the dugout. It was an entertainingly fun evening filled with games and celebrations. All in attendance had the opportunity to show off their pitching and batting skills on the field. Prizes were awarded to the fastest pitch and the most hits. Ben Gay was provided for those who didn’t make the cut. The program included the installation and recognition of 2009/2010 incoming board of directors and president, Dr. Michael Scheidt, and an especially moving awards presentation honoring those volunteers who have inspired us with their contributions to our Society, Foundation and the profession. Guests took full advantage of the amazing ballpark and the unforgettable view of the Rocky Mountains. Thank you to all who attended for contributing to such a special evening.

Growing MDDF In 2005, MDDS launched its supporting 501c3 organization, the Metro Denver Dental Foundation (MDDF). MDDF is a nonprofit organization dedicated to influencing positive health outcomes with quality patient care and education, transforming lives by promoting optimal, lifelong oral health and collaborating with those who share our commitment to advance education for improved health and wellness, to relieve suffering and to restore oral health and dignity. Since inception, the focus of MDDF has been the Smile Again Program™, which provides free dental treatment and oral health education to economically disadvantaged survivors of domestic violence who have potential for eventual self-sufficiency. Thanks to the exceptional generosity of our 176 volunteer dentists, patient who have completed treatment report improved health, confidence and self-esteem — vital ingredients for an improved quality of life. The treatment value contributed by our volunteers is almost $1,000,000. Although a very young organization, MDDF has made progress in sustaining the Smile Again Program™ over the last fiscal year with a 143% increase in grant awards and corporate donations, a 33% increase in individual donations and a 7% increase in fundraising. This year we are moving two very special MDDS programs to the Foundation. The nationally-recognized Careers in Dentistry Explorer Post program and the well-utilized member benefit, the Dental Presentation Center, will be welcome additions to our growing Foundation.
