How Long Do the Effects of a Massage Last? Like all foods cannot be grouped under an umbrella term, it is impossible to club all massages under one category. Massages lead to the relaxation and rejuvenation of the body’s muscles and tissues. But their nature and effect varies with the nature of the illness they cure, the intensity with which they are given, the expertise of the massage therapist and the individual’s physical and mental condition.

Hence, the effects of such a massage are also longer lasting than other form of therapies. If you are receiving a massage to help get rid of a chronic pain, then a weekly appointment is ideal and helpful. Chronic backaches or neck aches or headaches can be cured completely through weekly massages. These need not be deep tissue massages; as such pains are caused by external factors like stress, muscle pull or postural alignment. When opting for a deep tissue massage, which is most useful for long lasting physical ailments or persistent injuries and aches, you will probably feel a tad uncomfortable for the first few days after the massage. This is mostly because of the varying levels of pressure applied by the therapist to determine what will best help your problem and what is best suited to your body. A deep tissue massage will really start to benefit about a week or two later, once the body is accustomed to its ways. After the initial and frequent sessions, and once the pain starts to subside, one session a month can act as a healing session life-long.

These can be scheduled weekly or bi-weekly depending on the intensity of pain and tolerance level of an individual. Swedish massages benefit a person most when practiced regularly, along with several self-healing sessions. Self-healing includes yoga, walking and stretching to be done on a regular basis. Swedish massages also help improve the circulation system by increasing fluid pressure. Massages benefit the nervous system by providing a stimulus to hormones and neurotransmitters which help reduce stress, anxiety and depression. This benefits the patient by increasing his immunity, improving sleeping pattern and healing of physical wounds. The real benefits of a massage can be made to last throughout one’s life by maintaining a healthy lifestyle. This includes regular physical exercise; in some cases the therapist recommends certain exercises for his/her patient. In addition to this, one must establish a healthy eating habit. This can be achieved through consultation with Dieticians and Nutrition experts, which the massage therapist can recommend.
