From the WHA President… Dear Fellow Hereford Breeders,

Spring is finally here and what a welcome site. The spring rains are here which will quickly green up the pastures. Cows with calves are all starting to work the fences in an attempt to get to the lush spring pastures. These are all the signs of a new year in agriculture which shows potential for a profitable cattle industry. At the WHA sale this year in Lancaster, we hosted a record sale with a lot of enthusiasm by both the consignors and the buyers. We would like to thank everyone involved By: Joe Starr and a special thank you goes to the Wisconsin Hereford 2015 WHA President Women for providing the sale lunch. Sale manager, Caleb Ahrens, was very dedicated to organizing a successful sale. The State Sale was also a venue to support the Junior National Hereford Expo (JNHE) being hosted by Wisconsin in 2016. The sale started with a successful semen auction organized by BJ Jones and Sondra Brancel, along with the auctioning of a Hereford Scene in 2016 theme quilt made Holly Paulson. The proceeds were donated to the 2016 JNHE. The WHA thanks each of the people for their time to make this event successful. The WHA board has put an emphasis on promotion and advertising this year. Ken Pierce has worked with several Wisconsin agriculture newspapers by inserting paid advertisements promoting Hereford cattle. Ken has been successful in working with these same publications in getting them to insert several news articles featuring Hereford activities. If anyone has news articles that will promote the Hereford breed, please get this information to Ken. We have also worked to update the WHA website for the purpose of promoting WHA activities. This site is now a media to inform us of past and future activities occurring in the Hereford industry. We have started sending e-mails to our current e-mail list directing people to this site. We hope to expand this list within the next month to include over 1000 people in the Midwest. This will give WHA members the opportunity to promote their programs by the use of the banner ads on this website. Contact Jane Adolph to discuss these banner ad advertising opportunities on the WHA website. Have a great spring and I hope to see each of you at the various WHA activities this summer.

Wisconsin Hereford Association Hosts Strong Spring Sale

Over 100 prospective buyers attended the 2015 WHA Spring State Sale held Saturday, March 7, 2015 at the Grant County Fairgrounds in Lancaster. Balmy weather, a great set of cattle, and a semen auction that was a fund raiser for the 2016 Junior National Hereford Exposition to be held in Madison, Wis. all added to the great support for the Hereford industry. Topping the bull sale was Wildcat Baby Legacy 4014, a March yearling bull consigned by Wildcat Cattle Company, Darlington. The bull sold for $6,600 to White Willow Polled Herefords, Morris, Ill. Second high selling bulls in the sale for $5,000 were MG HYFI 109N Hereford Guy, consigned by the Steve Merry Family, Hartford; and PF Big Stanley PF2B consigned by Paulson Farms, Deerfield. The Merry bull sold to Paul Erickson, Viroqua, WI, and the Paulson bull to Ed Woolever, Wonewoc, WI. 10 bulls sold for an average price of $4,360. Top selling bred heifers were BPH 056X Trust Mandy 354A consigned by the Baker Family, Elkhorn, and MGM Miss Titleist 10A consigned by Steve Merry, Hartford. They both sold for $5,000. The Baker heifer was purchased by Oscar Huso, Aneta, North Dakota, and the Merry heifer sold to James Hinshaw, Malcolm, Iowa. 6 bred heifers averaged $4,542 in the sale. Fourteen open yearling heifers completed the sale line-up. High selling heifer was Brookview 64U Betsy 01B consigned by the Boettcher Family and was purchased by Bill Graber for $4,200.

Second high selling heifers were C&L Christie 50U 6B consigned by C&L Ranch, Ixonia and purchased by Walker Polled Herefords, Morrison, Tennessee; and KLK Sandies Sonic Star 051X, consigned by Keppen Farms, Ft Atkinson and purchased by C & B Farms, Mineral Point. These two heifers sold for $4,000. 14 open heifers sold for an average price of $3,371. The 30 lots grossed $118,050 and animals sold into 5 states. Cody Lowderman, Macomb, Ill was the auctioneer for the sale. Along with the live auction, a fund raiser was held for the upcoming 2016 JNHE Semen sales on 24 nationally recognized bulls, along with a handmade quilt by Holly Paulson and a calf warming jackets donated by Kermit Rhiner netted $14,525 for the event, scheduled for July, 2016, which is being sponsored by the Wisconsin Junior Hereford Association and the Wisconsin Hereford Association.

2016 Junior National Semen Auction Thanks to all the buyers and bidders at the 2016 Junior National Semen Auction on Saturday, March 7, just prior to the WHA Spring Sale in Lancaster. The auction raised $14,525 to help with 2016 JNHE expenses. This included the sale of a handmade quilt made by Holly Paulson that sold for $1,750. A big thank you goes to Holly Paulson for making the quilt, Steve Folkman for purchasing the quilt and then donating the proceeds back to the juniors, and then to C&B Farms, the Graber Family in Mineral Point, for making the final purchase of the quilt. Also thanks to the Rhiner family and Michael Boettcher for their donations towards the auction. Also a tremendous thank you for the overwhelming response we had to both the donors and purchasers of semen. A complete list of the semen auction results can be found on the website at wisconsinherefords.org.

Junior members, parents and advisors from all parts of the country participate in the event each year. During the three-day event, close to 100 participants listen to nationally known speakers and participate in junior board workshops, which assist in the enhancement of the individual's leadership talents, communication skills and beefindustry knowledge. If you are a member of the WJHA and are interested in attending this year, please visit www.wisconsinherefords.org or contact BJ Jones at (608) 482-2961 for a scholarship application. The snow piles have finally melted away, the days are getting longer, the new calves are hitting the ground, and the grass is beginning to show signs of turning green. This is a very optimistic transition period from winter to spring, and then to summer. Currently, the American Hereford Association is in a transitional period of leadership. On February 10, 2015, By: John Meents, Craig Huffhines stepped down after 18 AHA Fieldman years as Executive Vice President of Ph. 419-306-7480 or the American Hereford Association. On jmeents@hereford.org February 23, the AHA Board of Directors named Jack Ward, Interim Executive Vice President. I am very optimistic that the twelve person board of directors will find the best person available to lead the Hereford breed into the future. Craig Huffhines accepted the position of Executive Vice President of the American Quarter Horse Association in Amarillo, Texas. Mr. Huffhines joined the AHA in 1992, as director of feedlot and carcass programs for Certified Hereford Beef (CHB). He transitioned to CHB director in 1995, and launched the breed-specific branded-beef program for the AHA. In 1997, Craig was named Executive Vice President, and started the Whole Herd Total Performance Records (TPR). This program was instrumental in building the Hereford data base. Craig Huffhines surrounded himself with outstanding people, thus leaving the American Hereford Association on a strong and solid foundation. Imagine in your own mind what Hereford cattle looked like in 1992 when Craig Huffhines joined the AHA, and what Hereford cattle look like today. If you can’t imagine that, find a Hereford Journal or a Polled Hereford World from the early 1990’s, and look at the photos. You as breeders of Hereford cattle have made tremendous progress. To Craig Huffhines, I say “Thank you – job well done.” To Hereford breeders, I say “Keep up the great work, and continue to build Hereford cattle that meet the changing market place.” The demand for registered Hereford bulls and females has been outstanding this spring throughout the United States. Please take time to check out the “Market Place” sale results on the AHA website: www.hereford.org. Compare the pricing structure of Hereford cattle in 2015 to 2000. I think these are signs that Herefords are in an optimistic transitional period. Remember to make your cattle better today because you have to market them tomorrow!
