From the WHA President… Dear Fellow Hereford Breeders,

It is hard to believe that we are already into December. Harvest is done, finalizing the last winterization for the year and we are planning to attend the Denver show to see which bulls have produced the best progeny in the past couple of years. Another year has come and gone so quickly. As we look back, we think about the great spring sale the WHA hosted in 2015, the junior shows and seeing all the junior exhibitors excel during the summer shows, WI State By: Joe Starr Fair was a wonderful show, the World Beef Expo was well 2015 WHA President attended and congratulations to all the people that hosted successful fall sales. We must be thankful for all the success that we have experienced in 2015. We also need to thank the Kegley family for their generous donation of a heifer that was sold in the Louisville sale in November. The entire $14,000 worth of proceeds from the sale of this heifer are going to the 2016 NJHE. Thank you again to the Kegley family for their donations and all the people that participated in purchasing this heifer. A complete list of the people that participating in purchasing this heifer are listed on the WHA website and in this issue. Now it is time to look to the future. As you know, the WHA will be hosting the 2016 National Junior Hereford Expo in Madison. The planning committee has been working very hard to get all the arrangements finalized. They are still working to get all the funding in place and now they are coming to the really difficult task. They are going to need a lot of help to work on the various committees if we are going to host a successful 2016 NJHE. They need each and everyone of you to sign up to volunteer. At the January 2016 annual meeting, they are going to be asking for volunteers. Please plan now to clear your schedules for July 9-16, 2016 so you can volunteer to assist with this event. We are going to need everyone. The holiday season is quickly approaching us. This is a time to remember family and make sure you spend time with your family. As we try to get ready for the busy holiday season, I think it is too easy to forget what the season really means. It is time to sit back and reflect back on the true meaning of Christmas. Happy holidays to everyone.

Wisconsin Hosts Successful Hereford Tour Over 80 Hereford breeders from three states enjoyed the Southeast District Tour on a beautiful fall weekend, September 12th and 13th. The tour began at Merry’s MGM Farms, Hartford, Saturday morning, followed by a visit to C&L Ranch, Ixonia, and a great lunch, highlighted by a presentation by Kevin Schultz, Sand Hill Farms, Kansas, on “Will Genomic EPDs help your herd improve.” The tour continued on to Reinke’s Gari-Alan Farm, Johnson Creek, and Stanton Farms, Whitewater, that afternoon and concluded with a delicious beef dinner. The Baker Family, Elkhorn, hosted the Sunday morning tour stop, followed by a visit to Lininger Farms, Burlington, where guests saw a drone display. The tour concluded at Wiswell Farms, Elkhorn and guests heard a program on Select Sires Cow Manager Program. A judging contest was held throughout the tour. Dean Fedkenheuer, Deerfield, won the men’s division, followed by Emmett Langness, New Richmond. Dawn Peters, Ixonia, topped the women’s division, followed by Michel Dahnert, Juneau. In the junior contest, Brooke Peters, Ixonia took home top honors followed by Danielle Chwala, Jefferson. Danielle also went on to win the junior scavenger hunt. Caleb Ahrens, Brodhead, was the judging official. The tour is slated for the Southwest District in 2016.

Minute with the Meents I have FANTASTIC NEWS to share. The growth for the Hereford breed has continued to be extremely strong with the data released by the American Hereford Association on August 31, 2015 fiscal year end. Data indicates record sale prices for bulls and females along with increase in registrations, transfers, and membership. The American Herford By: John Meents, Association Field Staff reported on AHA Fieldman 195 auction sales this past year. Bull sales averaged $6882, up nearly $1800 per head, and female prices averaged $5358, up more than $700 over last year. There were 75,988 Hereford registered (a 6% increase), and 44,424 head transferred (a 10% increase) with 104,216 cows on inventory. The AHA has 3,885 active members (a 7% increase), and 2902 active junior members (a 9% increase). According to the National Association of Animal Breeders (NAAB), domestic Hereford semen sales increased 24% compared to last year. Hereford domestic semen sales have increased since 2006 by 179%, which is a testament of the great demand for Hereford genetics in the commercial beef industry. From 2004 to 2014, Hereford genetic trends indicate a 14% reduction in birth weights, 20% improvement in weaning and yearling performance, and a 30% improvement in end product merit. Congratulations to all Hereford breeders from making improvements in your breeding programs. I challenge each of you to continue to strive to breed the best cattle you can by the use of AI, along with all the technological advancements that are available. The fall sale season has started, and Hereford demand throughout the eastern Corn Belt remains stronger than last fall even as commercial prices have softened. For example, DelHawk Cattle Company averaged $1343 more in 2015 over 2014, Purple Reign Cattle Company averaged $3306 more on their September 2015 Online Sale. Mud Creek Farms averaged $1687 more this year on their October Online Sale. Lowderman Cattle Company grossed nearly $200,000 more in 2015, and in Wisconsin, Lamb Bros. averaged $1890 more this year than a year ago. The Hereford train is rolling, get on board! If you need assistance in improving your herds with the selection of cattle at the remaining fall Hereford sells, please give me a call.

2016 JNHE Update

The Executive Committee has been hard at work to provide a first class event when Wisconsin hosts the Junior National Hereford Expo in Madison July 9-15, 2016. Much help will be needed to run the show. Please be thinking about helping with areas through setup, which will start July 6, the show itself and ending with cleanup through July 11. The committee will have signup sheets at the annual meeting to formalize working groups and schedules. We need help from members both young and old to host a great show and provide some great Wisconsin hospitality. Plans will be underway to have another semen auction in conjunction with the state sale this spring. Please let BJ Jones know if you would like to solicit donations that would help fulfill some of your 2016 semen needs. Hotels have been filling up fast. If you have not made a reservation, here is a list of the hotels that have room blocks reserved through the 2016 Hereford JNHE.

Special Thanks To…

Bailey Jones, Annah Dobson, Brittany Renn, and Kaci Keppen for serving as Wisconsin Royalty and Ambassadors in 2015. We are looking for girls to fill out Princess positions in 2016. Wisconsin Juniors Attend PRIDE

Three Wisconsin Junior Hereford Association members attended the PRIDE (Program for Reaching Individuals Determined to Excel) Convention held July 25-28 in Estes Park. Brett and Bailey Jones, Darlington, & Lauren May, Mineral Point, joined 90 Hereford and Maine-Anjou juniors from across the country to visit local operations and businesses. PRIDE helps juniors develop leadership skills and meet fellow Hereford juniors from around the country. PRIDE is a great way to tour some awesome universities, hear educational and motivational speakers, and get an up-close look at some outstanding cattle operations. Tour stops this year included Blind Badger Ranch, Coyote Ridge Ranch, white water rafting, and Colorado State University. Both Bailey and Brett won scholarships through the WJHA to attend PRIDE and will be reporting on it at our annual meeting. Watch for details on the PRIDE convention next year.

AHA Annual Meeting

The Wisconsin Review A publication of the Wisconsin Polled Hereford Association.

Representing Wisconsin as delegates to the 2015 AHA Annual Meeting were Marv Espenscheid, Steve Folkman, Jerry Huth, and Gary Reinke. They enjoyed a Friday evening event at the AHA office where special tribute was made to Craig Huffines, retiring AHA executive vice-president, as well as honoring scholarship winners, CHB trendsetters, and distinguished Hereford breeders. A lively auction to raise money for the Hereford Youth Foundation rounded out the evening. Saturday morning the AHA annual meeting was held. Fred Larson was recognized as a retiring director from the board. New directors on the board include Pete Atkins, Kyle Perez, and Jim Bellis. In committee reports, CHB volume surpassed 51 million pounds this year, average prices for Hereford cattle rose significantly, and registrations, transfers, and memberships also reached an all time high.
