From the WHA President… Dear Fellow Hereford Breeders,
We just finished our Wisconsin Hereford Association 2015 Annual Meeting in Wisconsin Dells. This was an excellent opportunity to meet new and old friends with a similar interest – Hereford cattle. I want to congratulate the Clarence Boettcher family for being selected as the 2015 WHA Honoree. They have been a long time member of the WHA and have contributed a lot to the success of our association. If you attended the 2015 National in Denver, you could By: Joe Starr felt the excitement in the Hereford breed, which gave you a 2015 WHA President shot of Hereford enthusiasm energy. The stands were full of people watching the bull, heifer and pen shows. There were a total of 730 Herefords exhibited during the three days of shows, which is an increase of 98 over 2014. The National Hereford sale grossed over $1,100,000 and averaged $29,872 per lot. Wisconsin was very well represented in the National Sale with quality entries by Next Generation Genetics, Larson Hereford Farm and Pierce’s Hereford Haven. Congratulation to these consignors. Our next big event is the WHA State Sale on March 7, 2015 in Lancaster, Wisconsin. This sale has 19 females, 14 bulls and 1 semen lot. There has been an exceptional amount of interest in the sale entries this year. Holly Paulson has made a beautiful quilt with the 2016 JNHE theme. This quilt will be auctioned off at the State Sale with the proceeds going to the 2016 Junior National Hereford Exposition. A big thank you goes out to Holly for her work and generous donation of this quilt. Make sure you make your motel and banquet reservations early for the 2015 WHA Sale in Lancaster. This will be a fun and exciting Hereford Event that you will not want to miss. See you there.

What is the VISION of your Hereford herd in 2020? The breeding decisions that you make in the spring of 2015 will be of major impact to the heart of your herd in 2020. The cows bred this spring will calf in 2016. The heifers you retain will be four year olds (the heart of you herd) in 2020. Are you going to mate your cows the same as you have done for the past By: John Meents, decade? For example: Are you going to AHA Fieldman use your same old herd bull one more Ph. 419-306-7480 or year? Are you going to breed your cows jmeents@hereford.org to your favorite bull from Denver’s National Western? Are you going to AI to an EPD Genetic outreach numbered bull? Well, here is an idea. Do a 2020 vision! Where do you think the Hereford industry is going to be in the year 2020? Prepare a plan to improve your cows by mating them to bulls that will get you closer to your 2020 final vision. Last September, the American Hereford Association hosted a Hereford Genetic Summit titled “Get on Board, Navigate Your Future.” I think that relates to a 2020 vision. You, as Hereford breeders are challenged to focus on your customer’s needs as you embrace technology. As a breeder take time to understand tomorrow’s consumers. This means evaluating what your customers want from your breeding program, and the larger picture of what consumers of red meat are going to demand. Take advantage of all the new technologies. First, if you have not used artificial insemination, do so. Second, if your main market is selling females, consider In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) with sexed heifer semen. Third, if you are purchasing a new herd sire, make sure he has a Genomic Enhanced EPD profile. There are two areas that I’ve seen and heard that the Hereford breed needs to improve by 2020. Please consider working on these in your herd. One, continue to watch birth weight. Hereford breeders have made great strides in this area the past decade, but there is still room for more improvement. Secondly, increase intramuscular fat (Marbling Scores). Consumers demand it, packers are paying for it, and Hereford cattle need to improve IMF. The beef cattle market and the Hereford business has been great for several years now. We have seen lifetime record prices. I truly believe that there will be several more very good years ahead for seedstock producer, and a cow calf operator. A good cowboy and business man shared with me that when prices are high people get complacent, and when prices decline people panic. If you have a VISION, a plan, a mission you will not have to panic. You will be prepared in 2020 to SEE CLEAR!

WJHA News Junior Hereford Breeders Sponsor Open Jackpot Show
2016 JNHE Executive Committee Update
It is full steam ahead for the 2016 Junior National Hereford Expo, “A Hereford Scene in 2016” to be held in Madison, Wisconsin. It will be held July 9-16, 2016 at the Alliant Energy Center. Last year over 610 exhibitors from 34 states entered over 1500 head of cattle for the show and 24 contests that are held. The committee has been involved with a site visit at the grounds. Preliminary planning included theme and logo development, budget formulation, and fundraising plans. In holding an event of this size, fundraising will be key to hosting a successful show. Fundraising will be a major emphasis in early 2015. We are in the process of finalizing a fundraising brochure to start soliciting Wisconsin-based sponsors. If you are interested in being a donor, have a business contact that would be a good sponsor or have interest in being on one of the committees listed below, please let us know. • Co Chairs – BJ Jones (wildcatcattle@gmail.com) & Sondra Brancel (sondra.brancel@badgerlandfinancial.com) • Treasurer – Cathy Schommer • Fundraising – Steve Folkman • Grounds & Facilities – Virgil & Holly Paulson and Kermit Rhiner • Meals – Alicia Prill-Adams • Decorations – Amy & Nicole Starr • Awards – Kim Jones • Contests – Marv, Ruth & Amy Espenscheid • Special Activities – Eric & Rosie Katzenberger • Welcome – Jim Renn • Hospitality – Dee Hanson & Janeen Reid • Junior Representative – Nicky Folkman

AHA Announces Spring 2015 Gold TPR Breeders
One hundred and four dedicated Hereford breeders achieved Gold TPRTM (Total Performance Records) status for spring 2015, according to the American Hereford Association (AHA). Also, the AHA has released the updated EPDs for spring 2015. The EPDs and the updated Trends, Traits and Distributions report is available online at Hereford.org. The Gold TPR Breeder recognition is presented to progressive Hereford breeders who have measured traits and collected and promptly submitted performance data at all levels of production. Since the program’s inception in 2005, Hereford breeders have increased their data collection efforts. Breeders must meet a specific set of requirements in order to be eligible for the program. They are: • Herd inventory submitted prior to date inventory surcharge goes into effect. • Complete reporting of calving ease and reproductive status for each dam on inventory. • Complete reporting of birth weights for all live calves recorded in the calf crop. • Complete reporting of weaning weights for all live calves recorded in the calf crop. • Complete reporting of yearling weights for all live calves recorded in the calf crop. • Complete reporting of scrotal measurements for each bull calf with a recorded yearling weight. • Ultrasound data reported on 25% or more of the calf crop. Note: For weaning and yearling weights, disposal codes are accepted if the animal has been removed from the herd. Congratulations to Huth Polled Herefords, Oakfield, Wis., and Owego Stock Farm, Argyle Wis., for achieving Gold TPR status.

I hope I see you in the beef barn next year.” “Thank you for the Hereford medallion. It was exciting for my first year with my calf.” “Thank you. It was very nice to receive this award, and I look forward to showing more.” “Thank you for sponsoring the medal for Hereford showmanship.” “Thank you for donating the Wisconsin Hereford showmanship medallion.” “Thank you. We love showing and raising Polled Herefords and showing them.
