United In Play For All

Denton Parks and Recreation Adapted and Inclusive Programs encourage people to try new things and create experiences like hiking with our all-terrain Freedom Chair, or pottery through our Arts and Crafts program. We have hundreds of individuals with disabilities across our variety of programs, and outdoor experiences are the most sought. Unfortunately, most outdoor spaces are not designed for accessibility and inclusion.

On April 18, 2023, City Council took an exciting step forward in Strengthening Community and Quality of Life by approving a Professional Services Agreement with Mesa Design Associates, Inc. The agreement secures professional design services for the eagerly anticipated North Lakes Park Librada “Lily” Cantu Inclusive Playground project.

All-inclusive playground projects provide numerous benefits for children of all abilities, including those with disabilities. By incorporating accessible play equipment, surfaces, and sensory elements, all children can participate in outdoor play activities, promoting socialization, physical activity, and cognitive development. In addition, all-inclusive playgrounds promote inclusivity, helping to break down barriers and create a more welcoming and accepting community for everyone.

Parks and Recreation staff and Mesa Design Inc. kicked off this project in May with the establishment of a project timeline and identification of a focus group to help shape the vision of the playground. The first public meeting is scheduled for late summer/early fall. To learn more about the history of the project and to receive project updates visit www.discussdenton.com
