TION, and ELEVATION for it in the space below.
If the space provided on the workbook sheet is not adequate, have students complete this activity in their sketchbooks. Plans show the location of the building on the property, the size of the building, the location of door and windows, how the building functions, and much more.
House Plan A “Longitudinal” section is one that cuts through the longest axis (or “centerline”) of a building. Students can draw this or they can draw a “Cross” section, which cuts through a narrower portion of the building. Both are used regularly by Architects to show the massing of a structure, the interior elevations, and materials used for construction. House Section

Fido loves his new home. His best friend, Spot, would like to have an identical home for himself. Help Fido make the drawings needed for Spot p to recreate this doghouse. g
“Front” and “Side” elevations are normally shown on architectural drawings. Typically there is an elevation drawn for each side of a building. These elevations show exterior materials, building height, window and door locations, as well as relationships to site features or nearby buildings.
House Elevation
Just as we identified and labeled the parts of a fruit or vegetable in the previous activity, label the parts of the Fido‛s doghouse above. Remember to show textures and colors for each part of the house. I m a g i n e t h i s : Besides a warm house, what else does a dog wantt in a home? Perhaps food dishes, a soft bed, and toys. Anything else? copyright 2011

PORCH ROOF
The 2nd floor plans completed by the students may vary significantly from one to the next, as students will utilize different combinations of bedrooms, bathrooms, and dens. The plan above shows 4 small bedrooms and 1 small bathroom. There may be plans with no bathroom for a house built before indoor plumbing. A student may show three bedrooms and a large corner bathroom. A room without a closet can be considered a Den or Study. Varying designs are correct and feasible. It is important to align the stairs and some walls between the 1st and 2nd floors. Walls which are aligned between floors can be assumed to be structural walls, running from the basement level to the roof to support the structure. Showing the porch roof, and one for the pantry helps viewers understand the plan. Encourage students to add furniture and floor materials to their floor plans. It is even possible to add a 2nd floor balcony. architectural
