CHAIRMAN’S LETTER
F
Fiscal year 2015 was all about “new” at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts (DCPA) — new faces, new programs and new partnerships. As we strive to be the nation’s most engaging theatre organization, it’s rewarding to look back and realize that more than 931,000 guests have enjoyed our shows, classes and events. It’s even more rewarding to think how many new faces experienced theatre for the first time. Speaking of new faces, I announced plans to split the roles of DCPA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer in June 2014, starting an international search for a new President and CEO. Nearly 12 months later, Scott Shiller joined us from Miami filled with enthusiasm, a fresh perspective and the experience to turn the global spotlight on the DCPA. He is working with our seasoned Executive Leadership team to expand our reach, elevate our opportunities and engage more people in new and different ways. Scott plans to build on the firm foundation left behind by our late President and Broadway Executive Director Randy Weeks who passed away in Fall 2014. Randy redefined “Let’s get the show on the road” by transforming Denver into one of the nation’s premier Broadway touring destinations. He continues to be greatly missed and we’re fortunate to have found someone equally dedicated to pushing the theatrical envelope. On that note, we offered new and expanded opportunities for our guests all year long. Denver audiences were first in the US to see Pippin on tour as well as entirely new productions of The Unsinkable Molly Brown, The 12, Appoggiatura and Benediction. Plus, we added post-show discussions with Broadway casts, premium corporate entertaining options and a stripped-down, fueled-up approach to Shakespeare just for high school students. To get our community even closer to the art of theatre, we extended our Colorado New Play Summit to two weekends, expanded our high school musical theatre awards to include all of Colorado, and accepted more submissions than ever for our high school playwriting competition.
We focused on further strengthening our ties to our hometown. While we once offered only Festival-related training for schools, we’re now full partners on the annual Denver Public Schools (DPS) Shakespeare Festival. Along with DPS, we welcomed 5,000 children to our doorstep for what is the nation’s oldest and largest youth Shakespeare festival. You can read all about it (and much more, every day) at our online news center that provides coverage of both the DCPA and the Colorado theatre scene. It’s an innovative model that’s being lauded by our peers around the country. It was all about “new” this year — for us. Hopefully, as a guest, artist, partner or supporter, you realize that everything we do really is all about you.

ARTISTIC ACHIEVEMENTS PASSIONATE ARTISTS EXPANDING THEATRE’S REACH
I
In a season of brand new works and returning favorites, the Denver Center for the Performing Arts (DCPA) welcomed 573,000 guests to 767 performances. From popular crowd-pleasers to quirky karaoke musicals, FY2015 continued to diversify our programming to engage ever broader audiences. Kicking off with the national touring premiere of Pippin and continuing into the next season with an extension of Defending the Caveman, DCPA’s Broadway and Cabaret team was on a roll. In fact, the number of subscribers hit a nine-year high with more than 15,000 packages sold, 29% of them new to our subscriber family in the last two years. Additionally, 31% of performances were sold out. Our Theatre Company also had a banner year. Each of the eight shows — including three never-before-seen productions — surpassed its sales goal. What’s more, attendance increased an average of 1,100 guests per production, increasing paid capacity by 10%. Popular titles such as The Unsinkable Molly Brown and Lord of the Flies were complemented by a brand new rock musical based on the aftermath of Jesus’ death, The 12, and the long awaited conclusion to Kent Haruf’s trilogy, Benediction. The largest growth this season was the expansion of our annual Colorado New Play Summit paired with an increase in offerings from our innovative testing ground, Off-Center. In its 10th year, we doubled the length of our Colorado New Play Summit and focused the opening weekend on the local theatre community. We invited Rough Draught Playwrights to curate the inaugural Local
THEATRE ATTENDANCE Broadway
Playwrights’ Slam and held workshops for aspiring writers with our Playwriting Fellow, Matthew Lopez. This was followed by an industry-focused weekend, which brought professionals and supporters from throughout the country. The public weekend sold out in record time and the event ultimately welcomed 105% more guests. Off-Center more than doubled its productions and, through a partnership with Boulder Ensemble Theatre Company and its SantaLand Diaries, quadrupled the number of performances, pushing attendance up 440% over the previous year. Off-Center had an average capacity of 95% of which 39% of participants were brand new to the DCPA. The group experimented with a loyalty program, text-to-donate opportunity and an immersive theatrical experience, which prepared us for a large-scale production set to open in May 2016. Aimed at millennials, this commission of New York’s Third Rail Projects is certain to be unlike anything Denver audiences have experienced. Watch for it in the new year.

YOUTH & FAMILY ENGAGEMENT ELEVATING STUDENTS THROUGH THEATRE EDUCATION
A
As with every new school year, the Denver Center for the Performing Arts (DCPA) took the opportunity to refocus, refine, elevate and expand our theatre education programs. Recognizing that children who are exposed to the arts perform better in school, we maintained popular programs, expanded successful models and created new curriculum to elevate critical thinking and inspire future leaders. All in all, we served more than 72,500 youth and their families through 568 school interactions, instruction and theatre-inspired events. In addition to continuing our ongoing classes for children and teens, we welcomed more than 14,000 students to our Student Matinees. Many of these young guests attended one of 17 performances of Lord of the Flies, which was selected specifically to speak to middle and high school audiences. For students who couldn’t attend one of these field trips, we offered Student Rush tickets. The resulting 340% spike in sales proves that the appetite for theatre in our young audiences is growing. We also expanded three relatively new programs. We offered five Kids’ Night on Broadway events, which, with the purchase of one adult ticket, included pre-show activities plus a free ticket. More than 11,000 family members participated — a 200% increase in this single program. Furthermore, we greatly expanded both of our High School competitions. First, our
6
High School Playwriting Competition doubled submissions, readings and attendance at the public performance of the winning play. Secondly, we took our Bobby G High School Musical Theatre Awards competition statewide. Thirty schools from throughout Colorado entered and were given professional adjudication, in-school workshops and an invitation to attend the awards ceremony in The Buell Theatre. In the Spring, we launched two new high-profile education initiatives. With generous support from Anadarko Petroleum Corporation, Shakespeare in the Parking Lot took the Bard on the road…literally. Actors performed an adaptation of Romeo and Juliet from a pickup truck for high school students. It was urban, it was raw and it was instantly relatable. The actors then held in-class workshops that connected the performance to everyday life. This pilot project will expand to two sessions in Fall and Spring of FY2016. Additionally, the DCPA built upon our decades-long relationship with Denver Public Schools. What started as a series of in-school workshops to prepare students and teachers for the nation’s largest youth Shakespeare Festival became a full-blown partnership for 5,000 students right on our doorstep. We are ready with ideas on how to expand upon the success of this mutually beneficial partnership.

AUDIENCE ENGAGEMENT & ADULT EDUCATION THEATRE BUILDS RELATIONSHIPS FOR LIFE
B
Being the most engaging theatre organization in the nation means having plenty of programs that stimulate participation. To better reflect the growing interests of our community, we expanded some programs and launched other entirely new opportunities to attract diverse audiences to the Denver Center for the Performing Arts (DCPA). While our Adult Education classes continued to be a popular choice for aspiring and professional actors in our community, we saw the biggest gains — 35% growth — in our Corporate Training program for active business professionals. This, paired with new opportunities for corporate entertaining, connected the craft of theatre with businesses throughout Denver’s vibrant downtown. Several other programs also gained momentum including our select performances for the blind/low vision and Deaf/ hard of hearing communities, which saw a 166% increase in attendance. Additionally Theatre Thursday (social hours paired with a show), which started as a pilot program in FY2014, offered eight occasions this season. And based on the success of our popular Theatre Company Talkback discussions, which enjoyed a 17% growth rate, we also offered post-show Talkbacks following 13 Broadway shows to 2,200 guests. Nurturing relationships with our patrons is largely dependent on our invaluable core of volunteers who guided more tours, assisted more patrons and led us to a record-setting year in fundraising. Our continued success is largely thanks to 600 volunteers who, collectively, donated more than 22,000 hours to benefit the DCPA. We are truly grateful. To deepen the connection with our audience, we launched a new mobile-friendly website in October. After welcoming nearly 2 million users in its first nine months, the new site won TelerikSitefinity’s website of the year award. A major component of the new site was the integration of our former blog. Now a robust news portal, the DCPA’s News Center provides daily content on productions, events, classes and the broader theatre community through articles, photos, video, podcasts and guest commentary. Since its inception, 162,717 visitors have turned to the News Center as their source for both local and national theatre information. It is fast proving to be a national model for arts organizations throughout the US.

SPECIAL EVENTS & EXTRAORDINARY SUPPORT INNOVATIVE EXPERIENCES AND MOMENTOUS OCCASIONS
I
It was an extraordinary year for bookings and benefits at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts (DCPA). Our Event Services team hosted an increasing number of events in the Seawell Grand Ballroom, Directors Room and theatres, greeting nearly 70,000 guests at galas, product launches, weddings, corporate meetings and much more. Add to that the use of our Education department’s theatre and rehearsal spaces, and you could feel the activity level at an all-time high. One of those special events was our own Saturday Night Alive. This annual blacktie benefit for theatre education hit a record high for donations, netting $934,000 in a single night. Additionally, net proceeds were up across the board at all of our major fundraisers, which were enjoyed by 3,000 guests. We renamed our popular golf tournament in honor of our late President. As a result, 70 players raised a glass and took a swing in the Randy Weeks Memorial Golf Tournament. Our other featured benefits were equally successful. We welcomed 14% more guests at our six VIP Evenings and increased net revenue at our Women with Hattitude luncheon by 64%. This popular ladies luncheon (plus a few gentlemen too) has grown steadily since its inception and benefits our Women’s Voices Fund, which supports the work of female playwrights, directors and designers in our Theatre Company. As part of our focus on connections with area business colleagues, we kicked off two new initiatives designed to showcase the DCPA as a vital contributor to Denver’s urban core. Our Corporate Club is a simple and free employee benefits program in which businesses with 100 or more employees receive discounts to our productions. In its first year, 108 businesses shared our programs with nearly 6,150 employees. Additionally, we invited select companies to join an exclusive Corporate Membership that offers “skybox luxury” for corporate entertaining: a perfect choice when you want the best of the best.

As a not-for-profit organization, individuals, corporations and foundations are essential to our success. Whether underwriting a play, including the Denver Center for the Performing Arts (DCPA) in estate plans or inspiring a budding actor, these donors not only impact our work but, by extension, the local arts community and the national theatre scene. Thanks to these partners, we engaged with more than 931,000 people in FY2015. Their gifts fuel new audiences; their interests spark our curiosity; their passions fuel our mission. Bravo.

YOUR SUPPORT ENSURES OUR FUTURE
T
Generated an Economic Impact of
The Scientific & Cultural Facilities District (SCFD) is the Denver Center for the Performing Arts’ (DCPA) largest source of contributed income. Established in 1988, the SCFD is a penny on $10 sales tax that directly funds more than 275 arts and cultural organizations in the seven-county metro area. This voter-approved sales tax now generates nearly $52 million per year — roughly one-third the amount of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) annual budget. The SCFD has not only enabled our region’s cultural ecosystem to grow and diversify, it has led the NEA to place Colorado first in the nation in terms of attendance at concert venues, museums and theatre. Furthermore, according to the Colorado Business Committee for the Arts, funded organizations: • Generate $1.85 BILLION in economic activity • Employ 10,200 residents • Educate 4.25 million students • Entertain 14.2 million guests Citizen support of the SCFD makes it possible for the DCPA to flourish. Funds are used to underwrite free and reduced-price admission, audience development programs, accessibility services and new play development among many programs. Since its inception, the SCFD has enabled the DCPA to: • Produce 97 world premieres • Educate 1.3 million students • Entertain nearly 16 million guests
In November 2016, the SCFD will ask citizens to continue this nationally-renowned model of public funding for the arts. Please show your support for this invaluable resource that has redefined culture in Colorado.
