CHAIRMAN’S LETTER DANIEL L. RITCHIE | CHAIRMAN & CEO
Fiscal year 2013/14 was a banner year at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts (DCPA). We increased engagement in almost every program, reaching 763,554 visitors. As a vital part of Denver’s cultural landscape, the DCPA continues to be a key economic driver, stimulates community dialogue, introduces students to theatre, and entertains audiences with diverse programming. Our efforts in 2013/14 focused on new plays. Our 13 new works included readings of five plays in development, two innovative shows, two cabaret productions and four fully staged world premieres. A highlight was Karen Zacarías’ adaptation of Just Like Us. Based on Helen Thorpe’s book on immigration, the DCPA ignited community dialogue, asking patrons what it means to be American. Broadway was once again selected to launch a national tour with Peter and the Starcatcher, making Denver the first market in the country to see this take on the Boy Who Would Not Grow Up. More than 58,000 youth took part in a class or activity — an increase of 20% over the previous year. We launched a playwriting competition and expanded our musical theatre contest, drawing participation from High School students. These active young people are our future and we were delighted to welcome them. We also took a closer look at our relationships with our customers, asking them if we’re doing it “right.” It was such a rewarding dialogue that it resulted in our new mission: To create unforgettable shared experiences. To that end, I’m excited to announce that, as we work to make your experience better than ever, we’ve begun preparations for a total renovation of two theatres — the Stage and Space — to ensure that your experience is second to none. We look forward to seeing you, engaging with you and creating experiences you won’t forget. Thank you, as ever, for your unflagging support. You inspire us to make each day unforgettable.

ARTISTIC ACHIEVEMENTS BRINGING THEATRE TO DENVER & CROWDS TO THEIR FEET
T
he DCPA attracted an increasingly diverse audience with 43 presentations of which 14 were new to Denver. Our programming included themes ranging from immigration and homosexuality to religion and family values. Complementary events broadened and deepened participation from underrepresented audiences including Latinos, GLBT, African Americans and young professionals.

In addition to well-known titles such as Death of a Salesman, Hamlet and A Christmas Carol, our Theatre Company offered four world premieres. Among them were Just Like Us, adapted from a true Denver immigration story, and The Legend of Georgia McBride about a straight, soon-to-bedad who becomes a drag queen to pay the bills. The Theatre Company’s subscriber base grew by 7% despite one less show and a reduced capacity, reversing a sliding trend. Additionally, revenue for A Christmas Carol was 17% higher than in past years. Off-Center, our immersive, non-traditional group, presented two new productions in its lineup, while the Colorado New Play Summit introduced our national peers to five new play readings — including Appoggiatura and Benediction, which were selected for full development.

To give back to the Denver community, we provided 5,317 reduced-price tickets through our SCFD 10 for $10 program and donated 4,616 tickets to non-profits to support area fundraising efforts.
Our favorite Tupperware lady, Dixie Longate, launched her newest work in the Garner Galleria Theatre while Joey McIntyre of New Kids on the Block developed The Kid for our cabaret fans.

The Broadway group bucked the national trend by increasing its subscriber base and overall sales, which were up 13%. Additionally, Denver was once again chosen to launch a national tour. Peter and the Starcatcher kicked off a season of new favorites and returning hits, confirming Denver as the destination for theatre in the West.

E
xposure to the arts impacts academic achievement. The DCPA is proud to have reached 20% more students than in the previous year through new and expanded programs. We offered more than 600 school interactions to introduce students to theatre, spark creativity and innovation, and offer arts-infused workshops that improve literacy rates, math aptitude, critical thinking and problem solving. Building upon the strength of DCPA’s Dramatic Learning™ in-school residencies and Student Matinees, we launched two new ways for youth to engage with us. The first annual High School OneAct Playwriting Competition gained quick popularity, receiving 75 submissions from 11 counties. We held 85 in-school playwriting workshops before the competition culminated in the summer teen production of the winning entry, One-Sided Fish by Laurain Park. Secondly, the DCPA teamed with Colorado Symphony and Youth On Record on the Creative Classroom Collaborative. Funded by DaVita and facilitated by Public Education & Business Coalition, at-risk teens from Venture Prep participated in arts-infused workshops, which concluded in a performance of music, hip-hop, poetry and theatre.

Just one year after its inception, The Bobby G Awards — our high school musical theatre competition — moved to The Buell Theatre to meet growing demand, proving that Colorado has talent destined for the national stage. To ensure that we make these programs available to every student, the DCPA — helped in large part by the Lewis E. Myers, Jr. Scholarship Fund — provided more than $144,560 in scholarships. Our programs and student participation are made possible thanks to this ongoing support.

AUDIENCE ENGAGEMENT & ADULT EDUCATION WE CREATE UNFORGETTABLE SHARED EXPERIENCES
O
ver the course of the year, the DCPA examined its place in the community. More importantly, we asked how we should meet the needs of this expanding and diversified region. Our discoveries led us to create a new mission and vision — both of which are centered on our guests.
Adult Students
We refreshed our approach with immersive lobby activities, special evenings for military personnel, social hours before select shows and expanded community discussions. We grew our adult education programs by 37% and introduced a line of classes for seniors 50+. We invited audiences backstage, increasing tour attendance by 42%, and served up local and national content — articles, photos, videos — as part of our dedicated online News Center.

VOLUNTEERS OUR MISSION To create unforgettable shared experiences
THE HEART OF THE DCPA EXPERIENCE
T
he DCPA’s volunteer corps set the stage for a memorable year. Our 618 volunteers gave more than 24,000 contributed hours valued at nearly $603,000* — welcoming guests, planning fundraisers and offering valuable advice to reach new audiences. Our 317 volunteer ushers put in more than 19,500 hours of service to make each guest’s visit memorable. We diversified our corps by launching a 40 Under 40 initiative that met with great success. Our fundraising group, Denver Center Alliance, also outdid themselves this year. Helped by matching gifts from the Salah Foundation and event chairs Leo & Susan Kiely, our annual fundraiser, Saturday Night Alive, netted an unprecedented $842,000 for Theatre Education. * Independent Sector 2013 value of a volunteer hour in Colorado: $25.10

SPECIAL EVENTS AND EXTRAORDINARY SUPPORT
E
veryone loves a great party, and the DCPA aimed to please in 2013/14. More than 3,000 guests attended our fundraisers while another 52,594 attended 128 events in our rental spaces, which accounted for $1,928,437 in gross revenue.
Our signature benefit, Saturday Night Alive, raised a record-breaking $842,000 to support our growing theatre education program, with matching gifts from the Salah Foundation and event chairs Leo & Susan Kiely. The gala featured Matthew Morrison of “Glee and a sold-out crowd of 775 guests. Recognizing that the DCPA lacks an intimate pre-theatre event space for parties of 80 or less, the DCPA opened The Directors Room. Located on the southwest side of the Helen Bonfils Theatre Complex, the versatile rental space features an outdoor patio with mountain views. With a fantastic line-up of Broadway shows, we doubled our popular VIP Evenings, pairing pre-show dinner with the best seats to Peter and the Starcatcher and Million Dollar Quartet among others. Record-breaking revenue combined with growing attendance and new facilities, the DCPA remains the place to be for any special event.

FUTURE IMPACT
FOSTERING THE FUTURE OF AMERICAN THEATRE
The cast in the Theatre Company’s world premiere production of Sense & Sensibility The Musical Photo by Jennifer M Koskinen
W
ith 13 readings and fully-produced new works in the 2013/14 season, the DCPA continues to give voice to fresh, innovative works that are relevant today.
Our commitment is reflected in 38 commissions, 140 premieres and our New Play Summit. Recent successes gaining traction on the national stage include the Women’s Theatre Project (New York) production of The Most Deserving (full production FY14), Seattle Rep’s full production of The Comparables (Summit reading FY14), and a New York reading of Sense & Sensibility The Musical (full production FY13). New works often require more resources to develop, with revisions needed right until the curtain goes up. We are fortunate to have support from our Encore
Society members — individuals who have included the DCPA in their estate plans — and the Women’s Voices Fund. In 2005, the DCPA established the Women’s Voices Fund — an endowment fund dedicated to furthering the work of women in the theatre. Ten years later, the fund surpassed the $1 million milestone. Its 118 contributors have helped the Theatre Company produce 24 plays by women including nine world premieres, commission 14 female playwrights and hire 18 women directors. Thanks to these efforts, our Theatre Company works with local and national supporters and artists to develop new plays that reflect today’s issues and interests for a contemporary audience.
