As many nonprofit organizations can attest, a growing number of philanthropic and government funders require that requests for funding resources must be submitted “in collaboration” with other partners. But do those funding entities actually support true collaboration?

True collaboration is more than just lip service. If you Google the meaning of the word, you are likely to get a description that reads something like “Collaboration is the process of two or more people, entities, or organizations working together to complete a task or achieve a goal.” Indicators of true collaboration mean that all parties can see themselves in a shared vision, have a common workplan or set of goals and objectives, hold themselves accountable for doing their part to reach those goals, have a strong mechanism for communicating among themselves, and can see themselves in a shared budget. Anything short of these indicators is simple cooperation and coordination.

Back to the question above. Over the last 10 to 15 years the more progressive funders have sought to cause organizations to work together for a common goal. In the last 5 or so years, government agencies and less progressive philanthropists have followed suit by requiring partners to submit requests together. Admirable, but many funders continue to cause nonprofit organizations to compete against each other for meager funds and fail to recognize the true benefits of organizations working together.

What are the true benefits?

Glad you asked. Several authentic collaborations are working in our Montbello community and partners can articulate the benefits including:

aGiven adequate or plentiful resources, more residents of the community get access to needed services.

aProblems are local and by working together solutions are local and partners naturally create networks of support that residents can access.

aEconomies of scale are gained by assigning administrative duties to one partner while others are “on the ground” working with people in need of help.

aThrough channels of communication, collaborating, and coordinating, a strong sense of trust is created, and progress is made in responding to the challenges and needs of our neighbors trying to make it in a stressful and often chaotic world.

The real winners of collaboration are the people who live in our community and whose lives are made better because of our working together. Refer to the cover story of this issue for an amazing example of community partners collaborating.

Almost 25% of American adults are food insecure, a jump of about five percentage points from a year earlier as the double whammy of high inflation and the end of pandemic benefits squeezes more household budgets. “Food insecurity can be a canary in the coal mine for people who are experiencing high levels of hardship and aren’t able to meet their household needs.”

Food insecurity in Mont bello is not a new condition arising during COVID. It is a condition merely ex acerbated because of the pandemic. Food insecurity contributes to the burden of chronic diseases (e.g., diabetes, hypertension, obesity, kidney and liver disease, infant failure-tothrive, and so on) and poor mental health and disproportionately affects groups with socioeconomic disadvantage. In other words, our Black and Brown neighbors who live in stressed economic circumstances are highly impacted.

Montbello’s response to food insecurity is also not new with organizations such as United Church of Montbello working with Food Bank of the Rockies to provide a mobile pantry for more than 15 years, Denver Food Rescue working with Academy 360 to provide a weekly no-cost grocery for 5+ years, Montbello Walks providing a food pantry to seniors in the community, and Struggle of Love Foundation providing a food pantry for several years before the pandemic.

Folks were already growing food in school and community-based gardens such as the Five Loaves Garden sponsored in part by Denver Urban Gardens, the Marie L Greenwood Academy delivering the Each One Teach One early literacy-focused gardens program, Children’s Farms in Action and Montbello Organizing Committee starting an urban farm in 2014, and Academy 360 growing food on top of their asphalt parking lot. of seedlings, seeds, and growing resources to local families.

•Engaged over 100 volunteers to help distribute food resources through our partner pantries.

our community as people lost their jobs, schools and businesses shut down, and access to the existing pantries was compromised as the elderly volunteer workers were advised to stay safe at home.

With the closing down of critical services, the organizations mentioned above –and a few new ones — quickly rallied to form a network to address the food security needs of our neighbors. The work continues now well into 2023 as the food needs have only minimally subsided.

The overall goal of the network is to create a sustainable infrastructure where all who need access to food resources can get it. Further, we have the goal of creating a network of small farms and gardens that grow substantial amounts of food to create less dependence on the commercial entities selling food to our pantries or having to depend on charitable donations that frequently do not equal the amount of food needed by our residents. Most importantly, our goal has been to improve the significant food-related health disparities experienced by our neighbors. Our education and community partners provide nutrition education aimed at changing eating and food waste behaviors by working with children as change agents.

Between 2020 and 2023 Montbello’s Community Food Access Network grew from 8 partners (including 3 school gar-

dens) to 23 partners, which included 11 school mini farms. Dozens of folks work together to provide food to those in need, teach children about good nutrition and where their food comes from, and assist neighbors in growing food for themselves and their families.

In the last 12 months, together we have:

•Fed more than 115,000 children 018 years of age.

•Provided food resources to over 250,000 children, youth, and adults through the daily Sacks of Love pantry.

•Purchased food boxes to supplement donated food at a cost of approximately $6,000 per week.

•Distributed nearly a million pounds of food through the two partner food pantries.

•Provided 3,000 children and youth with nutrition and agricultural education.

•Distributed nearly 20,000 pounds of fresh vegetables through the partner food pantries.

•Employed 29 residents in the Community Food Access System through the Healthy Food for Denver Kids tax funding and matching grants and contracts.

•Provided 14 youth interns with paying summer jobs in the Montbello Urban Farm and the school mini farms.

•Distributed 250 grow-at-home boxes

•Signed a lease to bring a nonprofit, mission-driven grocery operator to this food desert community beginning early 2024. Collaboration at its best. Despite these amazing statistics, the Montbello Community Food Access Network is experiencing a major setback. In May, the collaborative was informed that we were not selected to continue receiving nearly $400,000 each year as we have for the last 3 years through the voter-approved Healthy Food for Denver Kids Commission. This news has devastated the community and shaken to the core the community-based organizations who have built a powerful network for food access and security where we at the local level are taking care of our own. New grantees from outside our community have been funded to provide minimal services to our neighbors.

The Network partners are scrambling to secure replacement funds, but these simply don’t exist or we are already tapping these sources for emergency help. At this writing, we are searching for new funding partners to sustain the collaborative infrastructure that has been built. Sentando Las Bases: Montbello FreshLo Hub

We are excited about the progress on the Montbello FreshLo Hub jobsite! The Alliance | Gilmore joint-venture team completed the removal of all utility service lines, which will allow the construction team to continue foundation operations which began in late May. We began reinforcing existing soil conditions by utilizing the process of a Geopier System, which will continue into June. This system provides a means and method to introduce an alternative foundation. It’s a technology that prestrains and pre-stresses the existing soil using a stronger replacement soil to strengthen the soft and loose soils on the site. The Alliance | Gilmore team finds this system most effective, especially for the specific needs of this unique jobsite: a condensed urban site with a need to vertically reinforce the existing soil conditions and support a vertical structure.

For foundation operations, the team chose to use The Matt Foundation. This is considered the best option for a shallow foundation to control differential

building. Foundation operations are expected to continue through the first part of June.

Training Future Builders

As part of our communityoutreach efforts, Alliance | Gilmore has been working with high school seniors in the architecture/construction program at the Northeast Early College (NEC) to study the FreshLo project. Earlier in the year, NEC students decided to build a 3D model of the structure based on the drawings provided by our team. Alliance | Gilmore met with students several times throughout the 20222023 year to provide guidance and mentorship throughout the process. The students worked in groups to build a FreshLo project model from sticks and paperboards. On May 10, 2023, NEC students presented their models and lessons learned to the Alliance | Gilmore team and we updated them on the progress of the project and typical construction challenges.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Denver is proud to announce that Naja’Ray West has been honored as the 2023 Colorado Youth of the Year.

Youth of the Year is a 75year-old, highly-esteemed national leadership development program through Boys & Girls Clubs of America. Nominees demonstrate outstanding character and leadership skills within their Clubs daily. This award is a celebration of West’s strong character, leadership, academic success, and poised, dynamic presence. West was honored this morning alongside 12 other State Youth of the Year candidates at a breakfast hosted by Boys & Girls Clubs of Colorado.

To reach the state level of this distinguished program, West won the title of Youth of the Year for both her local Montbello-neighborhood Club and the city title for all of Metro Denver. At the state level, West competed against 12 other youth from across Colorado over a period of two

days. After composing essays, securing letters of recommendation, and providing transcripts with proof of excellent grades, the multi-day judging process included delivering speeches for peers, chaperones, and judges, as well as individual interviews with an esteemed panel of judges.

This prestigious honor recognizes Naja’Ray’s outstanding leadership and achievements within her Club, community, and family. During her 12 years as a member at the Denver Broncos Boys & Girls Club, she has led various community projects, including launching an annual March for Peace in Montbello as a response to gun violence in the neighborhood. She has also mentored 40 young female Club members and participated annually in the Youth of the Year competition. Naja’Ray currently serves as President of Keystone Club, a national leadership program for teen Club members, for Denver Broncos Boys & Girls Club.

About Naja’Ray and her well-deserved win, Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Denver CEO Erin Porteous says, “Naja’Ray is an inspiring leader who has already created immense change in her Club and community at a young age. Whether through bringing hundreds of leaders and neighbors together for a march for peace

in response to gun violence or serving as a mentor for young peers at her Club, Naja’Ray’s commitment to using her influence and drive to change the world for the better is clear.”

As the State Youth of the Year, West will have the opportunity to proceed to the Southwest Regional level before potentially competing for National Youth of the Year. This state recognition is just the start of big things this spring for West.

One beacon of hope against youth violence in our community is the Struggle of Love Foundation (SOLF). Established in 2008 by LaKeshia and Joel Hodge in Denver’s Montbello neighborhood, the nonprofit organization has grown and evolved to address a variety of issues related to youth violence across Denver and Aurora, with a continued focus on Montbello. The organization’s mission is to offer alternatives to violence for those with limited opportunities

SOLF achieves its mission through services such as youth mentorship and leadership programs, “boots on the ground” violence interrupters, free sessions with licensed mental health therapists, community service opportunities, and athletic programming. The organization also operates a food bank Monday-Friday, youth employment services, free out-ofschool time camp, and much more. SOLF believes in addressing the intersectional causes of youth violence like mental health, food access, and the need for supportive, stable peer groups and role models.

A large portion of their work includes hosting live events, where the community can come together to address concerns and to provide a fun and enjoyable setting for youth participants and their families. At these events, the organization creates safe spaces where alternatives to violence and crime are appealing, accessible, and fruitful.

On Friday, April 28th, SOLF hosted the “Soul and Salsa” event in partnership with DSST: Elevate Northeast Middle School. The event’s theme was youth violence prevention and brought together the various cultures in the community. The event featured live entertainment, speeches from youth participants, free food, music, games, and tables featuring other community-building organizations, with over 100 attendees. This event was planned and executed by the students attending the “Love Academy” at DSST, which meets twice a week during the schoolbased, secondary prevention program.

SOLF also hosted its annual “Reach 4 Peace Picnic” on Father’s Day, June 18th at Silverman Park in the Montbello community. Attendees enjoyed many free services including a vaccine clinic, haircuts, HIV testing and education, dance zone, mobile DJ, father of the year recognition, community car parade and car show, engagement with vendors and delicious food and concessions.

You can’t go around, over, or under these traumas because they are embedded in your DNA, bones, and blood – much the same as your family. You must go through.

Growing up in a household and family with generational trauma and substance misuse, I’ve gained a few insights over the 53 years of my healing journey. Below are a few reflections that I would have appreciated knowing earlier in life.

First, nature is healing. You just feel different outside. The sun, breeze, birds, trees, bugs, water … I could go on and on. Leave your phone in your pocket and disconnect. Breathe, walk, skip, dance, drum, celebrate, grieve, cry, scream, laugh. Do you, but move a bit and then just be in nature. And remember, nature can be in your backyard or close to home.

Movement in nature helps us to heal, process, and recharge. Daily doses of nature are vital to keep you connected to something bigger than our little ol’ selves. Mother Nature is always there to bear witness for you in life.

Two, learn to recognize and heal from generational traumas. We all have them. We just need to become strong enough to face the truth of them. It’s not your job to fix your family;

Through… therapy, support groups, close friends, or whatever path in life will allow you to begin to self-regulate your nervous system. When those around you are in fight or flight, freeze, panic, or spiral mode, you need to practice the tools to self-regulate so you don’t get pulled into the trauma drama. If you begin to observe it, you see that, like everything in life, it has cycles and seasons.

Everyone always wants a trick to regulate their nervous system. I’ve found that by practicing breathing exercises you can calm or ground yourself very quickly. There are many books and articles online that talk more about this selfregulation.

The harder part is to practice it. Start by practicing it daily when you are calm and happy. Then, when you get stressed your body will start to breathe even before you consciously tell it to. It takes practice though, and the best part is it’s something that you do every day!

I encourage you to continue your own healing journey. It’s always good to reach out for support and know that you are not alone.

Colorado Crisis Services offers free, immediate, and confidential support and counseling for all Coloradans, including those with concerns about a friend or family member. Their text (Text TALK to 38255) and call lines (1-844-493-8255) are available 24/7 every day of the year. Calls are answered by a clinician and can be transferred to a peer specialist upon request. Translation services for more than 200 languages are also available. Colorado Crisis Services walk-in centers are also available statewide to provide in-person help, and most are open 24/7.

Parentline Colorado

Parentline Colorado is a program piloted by the Perinatal to Five Mental Health specialty at the University of Denver’s Graduate School of Professional Psychology. Parentline serves pregnant and postpartum families by providing free telebehavioral health services via video chat or telephone. The program is intended to reduce the barriers of stigma, childcare, transportation, and language for people in need of mental health care. Services are available in both English and Spanish.

Parent to Parent of Colorado

Parent to Parent of Colorado is a Mill Levy Community Initiative that provides informational and emotional support to parents of children with disabilities or special healthcare needs, including mental health needs. Parent to Parent provides individual peer parent support to parents upon request, and services are available in both English and Spanish.

Activity Options is another Mill Levy Community Initiative that works to empower people with disabilities to take part in recreational activities that help build confidence, life skills, independence, and social connections. These skills benefit all-around health as well as mental health. Activity Options provides supported opportunities such as horseback riding, domestic and international travel, skiing, trips to music festivals and concerts, and more.

National Federation of Families for Children’s Mental Health

The National Federation of Families for Children’s Mental Health support families with children under the age of 21 who have emotional, behavioral, and mental health needs, as well as substance use challenges. This organization provides trainings, peer support, education, referrals to other resources and services, and advocacy for participating families. Many services are free and accessible on their website.

Serving as Senate President Pro Tem allowed me to continue my personal commitment to working with all of my colleagues on some of the toughest issues that face us as a state. I appreciate everyone who leaned in to do the same during this legislative session. Our stakeholding during the legislative session reminded me that our government must work more effectively with our community. We must co-create solutions rather than impose them, remembering that our government at its best is always “of the people, by the people, for the people.” We cannot draft and pass quality and transformative legislation if we are disconnected from the people.

Mayor Mike Johnston -

Congratulations to our Mayor Mike Johnston. Mayor Johnston, as many know, formerly held the seat that I now hold in the State Senate. I consider Mike a friend, a colleague, and an equal champion for all who call our city home. I am looking forward to working with him to ensure that his transition is smooth. Specifically, I am co-chairing his transition committee focused on Education and the City/DPS partnership with the Honorable Rosemary Rodriguez. We are hopeful that renewed partnership between the City and DPS will ensure the best opportunities and outcomes for all students throughout Denver. It is an exciting time, and I am honored to share in this transition with Mayor Johnston!

Nuggets win City’s first NBA Championship - In case you have been hiding out

somewhere, our Denver Nuggets did an amazing job this year and brought home our city’s first NBA championship in 47 years! I was encouraged by their championship victory for a number of reasons. First, this team was thoughtfully built, coached, and bonded to realize this moment. Coach Malone was brought in eight years ago, and in eight years, he, along with the players, brought it in and raised the Larry O’Brien trophy! It was a great opportunity to share in the celebratory parade with my family! Riding through downtown on the fire truck and seeing the pride and happiness of our city was refreshing. I know that there was an Officer injured during the parade and my prayers continue to be for the Officer. I also extend a thank you to all of the Officers and security personnel who worked to make the overall parade a safe experience as we gathered in the city. As Coach said, “we don’t just want one, we want two!” Run it back!

Policy Talks - Be on the lookout for communication from my Senate office that will share opportunities for me to connect with you to co-create policy recommendations this fall. I will continue to ensure that our voices are showing up at the Capitol, through purposeful and powerful policy solutions for us to seize opportunities and to bring solutions for the problems that we face. I can’t do that without you and I look forward to circling up this fall.

Thank you for the honor that it is to serve and stand with you as we seek to see our hopes realized. A special thank you to my family and our extended team who helped me to be at my best.

gratitude that you have chosen me to lead and fight alongside each of you for the next four years. Representation goes beyond race, ethnicity, and politics. It entails leadership that is willing to co-create and cogovern with a community, assessing needs, listening intently, and strategically partnering, all grounded in love. Our aim is to invest in our greatest assets—our people. While some of you may have received mailers directly from me, and perhaps encountered some conflicting information, I would like to take a moment to introduce myself. I was born and raised in Five Points and have lived throughout District 8, including Montbello, when I was a young mother. Growing up as one of six children, I often took care of my siblings while my mother faced the challenges of poverty.

I vividly remember being a young mother, taking three Regional Transportation District (RTD) buses to drop off my son at daycare and then two more buses to get myself to the University of Colorado Denver, where I was a student. This experience was not unique to me. Years later, as a college graduate and former RTD employee, I discovered that students were traveling longer distances, at younger ages, and at earlier hours than I had. It was this experience that motivated me to run for the RTD Board and solidified my commitment to fighting for improved transit for communities like Montbello, which are often overlooked when decisions are made that profoundly impact their lives.

I recognize that in the coming years, we will shape the future of our communities and our city for years to come. The Organizations of Montbello Summit hosted by the Montbello Organizing Committee was a resounding success. The Summit brought together a diverse range of organizations from various sectors, including nonprofits, businesses, and community groups. The event aimed to foster collaboration and innovation to address pressing challenges like youth violence, education, housing, and food access. Throughout the Summit, participants engaged in insightful panel discussions, interactive workshops led by mental health professionals from the neighborhood, and networking sessions — facilitating meaningful connections

Spirits Grow through Dance With JOY

Joy Reynolds-Senyah, Founder and Director, Dance with JOY Dance with JOY (DWJ) Denver is a cultivated safe space where youth aged 18 months through 16 years can learn to thrive in multiple areas of their lives. Classes train students in dance, while offering character building, social emotional coping skills, and wellness principles. DWJ allows children of all walks of life and abilities to exercise their love of dance in a safe space surrounded by other children and teachers who look like them, encourage their abilities and nurture their uniqueness.

Dance with JOY opened in September 2021 with all beginner-level students and classes formed by age group. The program is concurrent with the traditional school year with a fall and spring enrollment. This allows us to host two recitals per program year and provide each student with the opportunity to perform. Over the past 2 ½ years, DWJ has added additional programming and now offers weekly classes specifically for 60+

adults, as well as instruction for youth in specific dance genres including Ballet, Jazz, Tap, and Hip Hop.

DWJ has reached outside of the dance studio into the community to offer a joy-filled physical education alternative in schools. This past semester, instructors worked with students at Academy 360 to help expand their physical abilities through dancing.

As the founder and director of Dance with JOY, I enjoy working in the culturally rich and resilient Montbello community. I’ve found that our students are grateful for the dance instruction we provide and that fills me with gratitude and joy. Esteemed Trailblazer, Long-time Community Activist Remembered for Leadership, Excellence and Service

The Montbello Community was saddened by the recent passing of long-time community activist Ms. Isabella Allen. Ms. Allen was a trailblazer in public service and much more, having a significant presence in Montbello and Northeast Denver. She was a force in local politics, having

Continued from page 15 served for many years as Captain of House District 7, where she organized the annual Unity Dinner, which welcomed hundreds of people, including prominent elected and community leaders. Ms. Allen worked tirelessly to organize and advocate for Montbello and Green Valley Ranch. For over 40 years, she would be seen knocking on doors to get her neighbors out to vote or weigh in on important issues.

Ms. Allen began her career as an educator and a counseling psychologist. She graduated from Florida State University and married Charles M. Allen, the operational superintendent of public works in Denver. She worked for Denver and Aurora Public Schools. Her education career started as a Special Education Teacher. Later, she became a High School Counselor, where she had the opportunity to influence the lives of many students. Her dedication to education and our youth carried over into her personal life, where she founded Top Image, a safe place for Montbello teens to gather and receive mentoring and tutoring.

Over the years, Ms. Allen was involved as a volunteer with several community organizations, including Pastoral Council-Church of the Ascension, American Personnel Guidance Association, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., Optimist Club (Chartered Women’s Club), Holistic Psychology Association, Ministers Political Group, National Education Association, National Mental Health Association, Optimist International, Police Advisory Council, Far Northeast Citizens Against Drug/Gang Activity, Far Northeast

Neighborhood Planning Association, Family Preservation Program, Northern Corridor Coalition Chairperson, and the Far Northeast Neighbors Inc.

Former RTD Director Chris Martinez said, “For over 40 years, our friend, Ms. Isabella Allen, played a pivotal role in the Montbello Get Out the Vote efforts. She will be sorely missed during every future election cycle!”

She was esteemed by fellow community leaders, including Senator James Coleman, who said, “Ms. Isabella Allen served as a trailblazer for public service and much more. We remember Ms. Allen for her leadership, excellence, and service. I extend my deepest respect and condolences to her family. May Ms. Isabella Allen Rest in Power.”

The Montbello Organizing Committee (MOC) is excited to announce the launch of the Montbello Community Assessment, a survey aimed at understanding the needs and challenges of our community. By participating, community members have the opportunity to shape the work in our neighborhood, express their concerns, and share needs they feel are not being met. MOC will host a drawing for ten $100 gift cards for participants who complete the survey. Your input is crucial, and your responses will remain confidential.

The primary purpose of the Montbello Community Assessment is to gather valuable insights from community members. MOC firmly believes that community input is vital in driving effective change. We would not continue the work we do if we were not ensured that we are properly meeting the preferences and needs of Montbello. By participating in this survey, you can help MOC identify the key issues, concerns, and aspirations of the community. The information collected will serve as a template for future projects and initiatives undertaken by MOC. Baruky was born in Mexico City and moved to Colorado at a young age. He has lived in Montbello for 20 years and has worked with several community organizations, including Strengthening Families and Steps to Success. Baruky obtained US Citizenship as an adult so that he could vote on matters of importance in his community. He looks forward to serving on the MOC board and making an impact in the Montbello community.

Be bold, be resilient, be an entrepreneur

When speaking about business enterprises we often think of established and well-known corporations. But the truth is the business landscape in the United States is mainly composed of small- and mediumsized enterprises that employ nearly half of the workforce in the country. According to the Small Business Administration (SBA), “… there are 33.2 million small businesses, which account for 99% of all US businesses.” Therefore, there is no doubt that small businesses are the driving force behind the country’s economy and that we have an intrinsic responsibility to support them.

As a business owner, consultant, and trainer, I understand that my job is not just about educating entrepreneurs to build a strong foundation for starting or growing a business – it’s about much more than that. We’re dealing with people’s dreams and the desire to leave a legacy they can pass on to the next generation. This is particularly true for minority owned entrepreneurs and business owners who believe that the “American Dream” is possible through business ownership.

The reality is that for minority owned businesses and entrepreneurs, finding programs and support is often a daunting task. In the Denver metro area alone, there are several business programs and services catering to entrepreneurs that help mitigate the struggle and challenges they face when venturing into the business world. Even though support for small businesses exists, most business services and classes are not always customized to certain populations such as minorities. For instance, culture and language play a key role in transmitting knowledge and generating understanding. For-

tunately, business assistance services centered on individual needs do exist, and a great example of this is the Montbello Entrepreneurship Foundations Program offered by the Montbello Organizing Committee.

A business class built around personal needs

But what sets this class apart? For me, the Entrepreneurship Foundations Program is a business class designed for the non-traditional entrepreneur and business owner. The goal is to prepare business owners for success without overlooking individual personal needs. In class, we go beyond the business foundational knowledge and address any challenges to make sure students focus on building their businesses.

There are many perks this class holds in comparison to other similar classes in the metro area including: childcare, 1-on-1 technical assistance, access to business loans, networking opportunities with business experts and entrepreneurs, computer lab sessions, and a location that is convenient for Montbello residents.

Cohort 3: Spring 2023 entrepreneurs

During the spring session, which focused on Spanish speakers, I had the privilege of meeting passionate entrepreneurs and learning their incredible stories. The richness and variety of business ideas made the class dynamic and engaging. We have businesses in industries such as transportation, food and hospitality, retail, residential cleaning, landscaping, sustainable fashion, and automotive services. Students are truly grateful for the education and support they receive in the program. Student Andres

shared, “Finding this class has been a true blessing for me and my family. Having come from Colombia a few months ago I never thought I’d find the support I needed to start my transportation business in the US.” Then there’s Imelda Enriquez who, despite the language barrier, helps with sales and marketing in the family landscaping business. She dreams big and works hard every day to build a better future for her family.

Cuando hablamos de empresas comerciales, a menudo pensamos en corporaciones establecidas y conocidas. Pero la verdad es que el panorama empresarial en los Estados Unidos está compuesto principalmente por pequeñas y medianas empresas que emplean a casi la mitad de la fuerza laboral del país. Según la Administración de Pequeñas Empresas (SBA), “...

hay 33.2 millones de pequeñas empresas, que representan el 99% de todas las empresas estadounidenses”. Por lo tanto, no cabe duda de que las pequeñas empresas son el motor de la economía del país y que tenemos la responsabilidad intrínseca de apoyarlas.

Como propietario de un negocio, consultor y entrenador, entiendo que mi trabajo no se trata solo de educar a los empresarios para que construyan una base sólida para iniciar o hacer crecer un negocio – se trata de mucho más que eso. Estamos lidiando con los sueños de las personas y el deseo de dejar un legado que puedan transmitir a la próxima generación. Pero, ¿qué distingue a esta clase? Para mí, el Programa de Fundamentos del Emprendimiento es una clase de negocios diseñada para empresarios y propietarios de negocios no tradicionales. El objetivo es preparar a los empresarios para el éxito sin pasar por alto las necesidades personales individuales. En clase, vamos más allá del conocimiento básico empresarial y abordamos cualquier desafío para asegurarnos de que los estudiantes se concentren en desarrollar sus negocios.

Los estudiantes están verdaderamente agradecidos por la educación y el apoyo que reciben en el programa. El estudiante Andrés compartió: “Encontrar esta clase ha sido una verdadera bendición para mí y mi familia. Habiendo venido de Colombia hace unos meses, nunca pensé que encontraría el apoyo que necesitaba para comenzar mi negocio de transporte en los Estados Unidos.” Luego está Imelda Enríquez, quien a pesar de la barrera del idioma, ayuda con las ventas y el mercadeo en el negocio familiar de paisajismo. Ella sueña en grande y trabaja duro todos los días para construir un futuro mejor para su familia.

Gustavo is using his knowledge to work with his grandma on her garden.

As springtime bloomed, bringing vibrant colors and the scent of fresh soil, KIPP Northeast Denver Middle School (KNDMS) and KIPP Northeast Denver Leadership Academy (KNDLA) undertook a remarkable initiative to cultivate green thumbs and sow seeds of knowledge. Before 2022, the KIPP Colorado gardens were a dormant patch of land but have now found new life through the dedicated care of students, teachers, and community partners.

The activation of the gardens emerged as an innovative approach by Veronica Booz, KIPP Colorado’s Advocacy and Community Engagement Coordinator, to captivate students in hands-on learning experiences while fostering a deeper connection with nature and nutrition. KIPP students have eagerly taken up the task of nurturing the garden and have become more connected to their community through it. Roman and Gustavo, two friends who work together in the garden at KNDL shared, “Something we have learned is how important the soil is to the plants. It’s fun to learn to take care of the environment and stay connected with where our food comes from.”

The activation of the KIPP Colorado gardens not only revitalized neglected spaces but also reinvigorated the spirit of learning within students, instilling in them a lifelong love for nature and a deep-rooted appreciation for the food they grow. Thanks to the wisdom of community partners like Justin Twist from the Consumption Literacy Project, these gardens became a living laboratory, where students learn to plant and witness the wonders of life unfolding before their very eyes. With Justin’s engagement, the garden beds have been renovated, a compost system has been implemented, and the soil has been changed to ensure healthy plant growth and productivity.

These gardens stand as a testament to the transformative power that occurs when the community invests in the food they grow. The transformation of the KIPP Northeast Denver Middle School and KIPP Northeast Denver Leadership Academy gardens integrates students in communal cultivation, fostering a sense of connection to the land, and promotes food security and resilience. fresca, la Escuela Media de KIPP en el Noreste de Denver (KNDMS) y la Academia de Liderazgo de KIPP en el Noreste de Denver (KNDLA) emprendieron una notable iniciativa para cultivar habilidades verdes y sembrar semillas de conocimiento. Antes de 2022, los jardines de KIPP Colorado eran un terreno inactivo, pero ahora han encontrado una nueva vida, gracias al cuidado dedicado de estudiantes, maestros y socios comunitarios.

La activación de los jardines surgió como un enfoque innovador de Veronica Booz, Coordinadora de Promoción y Participación Comunitaria de KIPP Colorado, para cautivar a los estudiantes en experiencias prácticas de aprendizaje mientras fomenta una conexión más profunda con la naturaleza y la nutrición. For elementary, middle, and high schoolers, summer vacations brings warm weather, sunshine, and a well-earned break from the classroom. But the long summer months also pose a challenge: what to do with all that free time?

From summer camps to picnics to museums, families have lots of options during summer break. Arizona Alli, an Academy 360 administrator, says kids can benefit significantly from staying engaged over the summer.

“Summer programs help kids to continue to push their academics, and provide them the structure and support and social/emotional skills that they’ve been working on all year,” she said. “Plus, it’s fun!”

Montbello and the surrounding areas have lots of summer activities for kids and families. Here are six can’t miss events and activities:

Participants of all ages can come together to “beautify” Montbello on Community Beautification Day on August 10th at 4pm. Academy 360 will also host a back-to-school giveaway on August 13th at 1pm and orientation on August 17th.

The Keep Colorado Wild Pass provides year-long access to Colorado state parks for $29. Admission to all Colorado State Parks is also free on Monday, August 7th. Admission to all National Parks will be free on August 4th and September 23rd, plus fourth graders get in free every day! Nurturing Nature: My Journey of Planting Trees with Grandma

My name is Yenebri Car-

camo, I’m 14 years old, and I’m part of the CCC (Colorado Changemakers Collective) youth group. Participating in the tree-planting event on Arbor Day and Parks, Rivers, Trails & Trees Day on May 13th was an incredible experience for me. What made it even more special was being able to share it with my beloved grandmother. I’m incredibly grateful and proud to have been part of this initiative, and I’m filled with excitement when I think about the future of these trees. I can already envision it, and it’s something that brings joy to my entire family.

Holding the small trees in my hands made me feel empowered. Together, the CCC youth embarked on a mission to counter the effects of climate change and preserve the natural beauty of our community. Each hole we dug and every tree we planted filled us with hope and determination.

Working alongside my grandmother was a gift. She has always instilled in me a

love for nature, teaching me to respect and value every leaf, branch, and creature that shares our home on Earth. Seeing the joy in her eyes as we worked together to plant trees created a deep intergenerational connection and shared purpose.

I imagine my family walking among the trees we’ve planted, enjoying their shade and creating memories together. I envision my younger brother, still a toddler, exploring this natural environment and being awestruck by the beauty of life that has flourished thanks to our collective effort.

Cuidando la Naturaleza: Mi Viaje Plantando Árboles con mi Abuela Por Yenebri Carcamo

Me llamo Yenebri Carcamo, tengo 14 años y formo parte del grupo de Jóvenes Emprendiendo Liderazgo,de CCC (Colectiva Creando Cambios en Colorado). Participar en el evento de plantar árboles del Día del Árbol y Parques, Ríos, Senderos y Árboles el 13 de mayo fue una experiencia increíble. Lo más especial es que pude compartirlo con mi abuela. Estoy agradecida y orgullosa de haber sido parte de esto, y me emociona pensar en el futuro de estos árboles. Ya puedo visualizarlo, y es emocionante para toda mi familia.

Sostener los pequeños árboles en mis manos me hizo sentir poderosa. Juntos, los jóvenes de CCC nos embarcamos en una misión para contrarrestar el cambio climático y preservar la belleza natural de nuestra comunidad. Cada árbol plantado nos llenaba de esperanza y determinación.

Trabajar con mi abuela fue un regalo. Ella me ha enseñado

Montbello Community Inspires Change Nationwide: A Journey Toward Sustainable Mobility

The spirit of change and resilience emanating from Montbello resonated far beyond the local community, reaching audiences at two significant conferences in May: the NACTO (National Association of City Transportation Officials) conference in Denver and the Forth Roadmap conference in Portland, Oregon. During each of these events, I had the privilege of sharing Montbello’s inspiring journey toward a sustainable future with national transportation leaders.

During the Forth Roadmap conference, I gave a presentation about the remarkable strides Montbello has made in

advocating for sustainable mobility and safer streets. The story of our vibrant community reinforced the importance of equitable transportation options for all.

That same week, NACTO held its annual conference in Denver and we were able to host a WalkShop – an interactive workshop promoting pedestrian-friendly urban design and walkability – in Montbello. We started our journey by riding bikes from the Peoria Street RTD Station into Montbello – a symbolic act that exemplified the strides we have made in ensuring safe and accessible transportation options. As we pedaled through the streets, I shared stories of how our community came together to design projects that prioritize the safety and well-being of all residents and make walking, rolling, and cycling a safe and enjoyable experience.

WalkShop participants also had the opportunity to catch a glimpse of the future site of Montbello’s innovative e-mobility hub, which will feature a bike library equipped with state-of-the-art e-bikes. Additionally, a dedicated electric passenger van will enhance the outreach efforts of local organizations, fostering stronger connections and collaboration. Strategically placed EV charging stations will further promote sustainable transportation and reduce our carbon footprint.

Our message resonated deeply with the experts, who witnessed firsthand the impact of community-driven initiatives. As we look to the future, Montbello is poised to be a leader in providing accessible and eco-friendly transportation options for the community.

La Comunidad de Montbello Inspira el Cambio en Todo el País: Un Viaje Hacia la Movilidad Sostenible

El espíritu de cambio y resiliencia que emana de Montbello resonó mucho más allá de la comunidad local y llegó al público en dos importantes conferencias en mayo: la conferencia NACTO (Asociación Nacional de Funcionarios de Transporte de la Ciudad) en Denver y la conferencia Forth Roadmap en Portland, Oregón. Durante cada uno de estos eventos, tuve el privilegio de compartir el viaje inspirador de Montbello hacia un futuro sostenible con los líderes del transporte nacional.

Durante la conferencia Forth Roadmap, hice una presentación sobre los notables avances que Montbello ha logrado en la defensa de la movilidad sostenible y calles más seguras. La historia de nuestra vibrante comunidad reforzó la importancia de las opciones de transporte equitativas para todos.

Esa misma semana, NACTO celebró su conferencia anual en Denver y pudimos organizar un WalkShop – un taller interactivo que promueve el diseño urbano amigable para los peatones y la accesibilidad para peatones – en Montbello. Clearly Articulate Your Business’s Unique Value

Have you ever visited a website and been confused about what the company offers? Your business is awesome and you don’t want to miss an opportunity to help customers understand why!

Your messaging should highlight your strengths and distinguish your company from competitors. Let customers know right on the home page why they should spend their money on your products or services.

Incorporate Long-Tail Keywords

Strategically placed buttons as CTAs not only guide visitors towards the desired action but also create a sense of urgency that keeps them engaged with your business.
