Hello, my name is Depanshu Gola. I am an architect and designer based in New Delhi, India, graduated from School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi in 2016. I have worked at Studio IF, R+D studio and currently working with Stephane Paumier architects, Delhi. My interest lies in creating human interactive spaces, design that adds value to experience and comfort while exploring new systems and technologies. In my opinion, Design can influence a varied scale from an individual experience to a city scale impact, all it takes a concious process in creating something. Thesis - Urban Subzi Mandi (2016) This thesis explored Urban Mandi in three aspects: Architecture of Mandi, Relation between community - Mandi and as a demostrative urban farming space to encourage locavorian culture in Indian context. Urban design - Convention centre, Dwarka (2015) The key concept was to explore flexibility in terms of usage of each building and provide a coherent relationship between them. 104 Hectare township design (2014) Understanding the concept of hierarchy of built and unbuilt spaces while maintaining high density of housing units.

BRIEF

Role in the project

The design envisions a school campus (K-12) with an array of green terraces, public spaces and play areas. The building follows a linear format, bordering the eastern boundary of the plot. This effectively shades the play areas, giving equitable conditions for sport activities throughout the day. A series of interlinked double height spaces within the building, accomodate more sport activities. The project is constructed in three phases: Primary block (Pre Nursery), main block (Senior) and Sports area.

Temporal edge of mandi Major business of wholesaling happens from mid night to morning. During this this time, these pockets of loading area for LCV (Light Commercial Vehicle) ensure the usage during Mandi time. And, during day

time these pockets shut down and provide unhindered continous flow of small shops and informal market setting, creating an active front edge for the community.

AUCTION AREA While maintaining the main function of auctions during night time, this space will change its apperance in day time. The informal market with footkar and kiosk will

be setting up within this area. The width and spacing between the marked area ensures its usage for both the purposes with an adequate space for circulation.

PUBLIC PLAZA CONNECTS TO THE ROOFTOP DECK Generally, roofs in Mandi are underutilized. If it is well connected with a public plaza, and other nodes, it will result in a space that is active for the community. These spaces will be used to impart knowledge about the role of food and its production.

Thus, it will provide a platform to make people understand the ongoing food related issues which are not just local but global.

LEGIBLE URBANITY BRIEF This project aims to visualise urban design with a detailed scheme in terms of resolution and understanding of its various components i.e. Convention center, Hotels and Office complex. CONCEPT Site planning has been done keeping in mind, that the placement of components ensures legibility. The whole site has an uninterrupted view from UER.

SKY AS A FACE WOODS IN THE SKY is an experiential blend of stars, silence and landscape focussing on human interactive spaces, that Roccascalegna is representative of. The architectural language of the design proposal subverts itself to camoulagues in the surrounding to let the drama of nature, overrule the experience of the user. Various functions are strategically scattered in the intervention area, responding to Roccascalegna’s city fabric. It also depicts a constellation on the ground. These programs are connected through a path that drapes the castle. The movement system is an outcome of appreciation of the site and its context. It is an extrapolation of the existing access route. The journey begins from this existing route, gradually transforming into to a new experience, as one walks along the castle wall. It is about experiencing closely from a distance. Therefore, the proposed design

maintains a gap with the castle wall to respects its sanctity. Nestled amidst the medieval landscape and an ancient sky, one moves through various functions that the site has to offer. Massing of habitable units and other facilities are carefully designed to camouflaging in the surroundings while embracing the landscape and the sky views. Every structural module of a unit is incremental addition for the next program, built in wood, steel and glass. The programs related to public awareness about sky observation are segmented into smaller program from the castle edge till the tower in the west. This journey of exploration culminates at the observatory that is built within the dilapidated tower, where one can contemplate on the enigma of the cosmos.

Cross-sections are designed while keeping in mind the user’s psychology to align themselves in spaces of particular proportions. These sections, then, form modules for different program catering to specific need of activities.

FAITH AS STRING OF SOUNDS The “Calling to the God” greets the visitors with the embrace of open arms by using segmented ellipse as it base plan. This space is a plethora of sounds created by wind pipes made out of 1 million unit lengths of wind pipe. The sounds created by these organ pipes symbolise the voices of 1 million prayers. Wind pipes will sensitize the user experience as these units have a long shared history with Christianity. Today, we are consumed in paying attention to the externality; the value of looking inward is reduced. While the challenge of our times is that the battle field of our human revolution lies in our hearts. Within this soundscape, a space with apparent absence of sounds created by employing the principles of interference of sound waves. This unexpected silence, leaves you in

a void of sound, surrounded by a million answered prayer, is an awe striking experience. North Star is the universal guiding factor; it is a reliable gauge of north if you find yourself lost. The slit in the wall guides ones’ focus to move up into the sky, at the North Star. Only to reorient ONESELF with the religion .Here, North Star is symbolic of an unwavering protection of God. The journey culminates with a gaze into the sky, at the fundamental marker, eventually leaving one inspired.

POINTS ON THE TRAJECTORIES These trajectories are sub-divided to give points on the path that formed the location of windpipes.

INTERPOLATION OF POINTS Collection of points are joined to form an array of location and direction of windpipes.

EXTRUSION OF WINDPIPES Resultant array of lines are extruded to form windpipes.

LAYERS OF WINDPIPES The process is repeated three times to achieve the overlay of three grid of windpipes.

The form generation is done in grasshopper 3d +Rhino.

EXPERIENCE OF MEMORIES 1947... was a marker for India; the event led to destruction, migration, loss, it bought out hell, hunger and war, world of rapture for the most. Alongside, it was an event that earmarked unity, bravery, admiration, dedication and pride; for some, these were the heroes who embarked onto serving the nation until their last breath. It is cumulation of these unparalleled efforts that gave our country an opportunity to imagine our identity as one, which was our own national identity. To acknowledge the eternal fight of the soldiers who are always at war for us to be at peace, to pay tribute to those who don’t seek remembrance and still become immortal, to salute our unshakable faith in Indian army’s devotion, this war memorial is accumulation of these diverse emotions, associations and memories that build the narrative for it. This war memorial is

a catalyst in enhancing ones feelings by providing a space of solitude under an umbrella of organic. The space of war memorial does not compete but appreciates, does not distract but adds value to the seven decades of our independence. Although the memorial camouflages with the site setting and differs from the monumentality of a super structure in construction but it is strongly grounded in the nation’s belief in a democratic, grounded, universally accessible and a porous space. Metaphorically, the war memorial is a strong and evoking representation of our progressing needs and changing ideas of monumental.

VISION OF SITE Lawn II is used for the main commemorative hall as this location offers a balanced link between India gate and the proposed war museum. Lawn I has minimum site modification because of already present features like trees and public convenience. The public toilet facility will be revamped and be a part of the war memorial intervention. The location of the memorial offers a number of nodes and link, these links are

knitted together with a free-flow pedestrian path tying together all the elements to form a “gestalt”. The clues for the form and materiality of the memorial have been derived from India gate and Chatri (canopy). The juxtaposition of circle and a rectangle is a result of the hints that the site offers.

INTERPRETATION OF AELION HARPS Sound of memories is a re-interpretation of the “aeolian harp�, a stringed instrument that produces harmonic sounds when a current of air passes through it. The idea is to fill the space with constant harmonic

sounds and to give an inception of associations, attachments and memories of war and their martyrs.

LOOPING THE CYCLE To visualize the Dhalao not just as a neglected infrastructure but as an asset to the community, we are imagining the Dhalao to be a place of regeneration of energy and education to strengthen the relationship between the community and the Dhalao. SEGREGATION AT SOURCE The idea has its basis on the assumption that segregation of biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste happens at a household — the source. This is then collected from about 300 households by the Waste pickers, and brought to the dhalao. BYPRODUCTS The amount of food waste going into a digester is about 27Okgs per day. This produces biogas which is of equal capacity as of 1.8 cylinder of 14.2 kg of LPG per day. A green horizontal set of plates is used to grow a nursery using the manures from the compost pit.

The open terrace is used to dry the recyclable products that are washed from below. These are then stored in the room beside.

Those non organic waste which cannot be recycled on site is taken away by the M.C.D. truck to be processed on a larger scale.
