On May 14, 2008, DePaul celebrated the opening of the new track and field at Lane Stadium with the inaugural running of the DePaul Relays. The meet marked the first regularseason competition DePaul has hosted in more than 50 years. The Blue Demons won a total of 15 events at the 2008 DePaul Relays and picked up two NCAA Regional Championship qualification marks The facility, located just a short distance away in West Lakeview, is home for not only the DePaul men’s and women’s outdoor track and field squads, but also serves the football, soccer, lacrosse and track and field teams of Lane Tech High School. The state-of-the-art stadium features a newly resurfaced 400-meter six-lane track, stadium lighting, and dedicated space for cages, pits and other amenities to allow the Blue Demons to compete in all NCAA sponsored events including javelin, steeplechase, and pole vault, in addition to all other throwing, running, and jumping events. In 2007, filmmakers transformed Lane Stadium into Archbold Stadium, the home of the Syracuse Orange football team prior to 1980. The temporary facade was used to film scenes for The Express, a movie chronicling the life and career of Ernie Davis, the first African American to win the Heisman Trophy.

HEAD COACH PATRICK J. SAVAGE | FOURTH SEASON A member of the DePaul athletics community for over four decades, Pat Savage enters his fourth season as head coach for the DePaul men’s and women’s cross country and track and field programs and his fifth season as a member of the coaching staff.
The Savage File Education
Savage’s teams have also experienced tremendous success during his career as he has tutored 39 National Junior College All-Americans and four NJCAA national champions. In 2002 his team won the NJCAA National Championship in the marathon. Along with his national success, Savage guided over 200 All-State athletes and 19 Skyway Conference cross country champions while his teams have won eight NJCAA regional titles. Savage’s runners club also won 17 Chicago Area Runner’s Association team titles.
Since the beginning, Savage has always put an emphasis on the complete student-athlete, stressing academics as well as athletics. In his first three years as head coach, over 140 of his competitors earned BIG EAST Conference All-Academic Team honors. On the national level, Melissa Fraser, Mary Cate Quiett and Brad Millar were honored by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) as All-Academic Team members. Both Quiett and Millar earned the honor during the 2007-08 season as well. Additionally, Millar was the first student-athlete since the 1995-96 season to be named to ESPN The Magazine’s Academic All-District team.
Savage, an eight-time NJCAA Region IV Coach of the Year, was elected to the Illinois Track and Cross Country Coaches Hall of Fame in 1989. He has also been named St. Mel’s High School Man of the Year and was inducted into DePaul’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 1993. He has served as the President of the Illinois Track and Cross Country Coaches Association, the Illinois Community College Track and Cross Country Coaches Association and the Chicago Area Runners Association. In 1995, the Niles West Indian Cross Country Invitational was renamed the Patrick J. Savage Invitational. During the 1980’s and 1990’s it was the largest high school- sponsored cross country meet in the nation, reaching a peak of 73 boys teams and 69 girls squads.
At the team level, both the men’s and women’s track and field and cross country squads were named the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team. While it was a first for the track and field teams, it was the third consecutive year cross country was put on the prestigious list. Men’s track and field made a bold statement in its first appearance on the list, posting the highest team-grade point average in the entire country. Within the BIG EAST, both cross country teams and the men’s indoor and outdoor squads boasted the highest GPA compared to their conference counterparts. On the course the men’s cross country team reached as high No. 14 as in the USTFCCCA Midwest Regional Rankings, while then-freshman Matthew Graham became the program’s first BIG EAST Player of the Week in 2008. In 2009, he won all five regular-season races and was the only student-athlete to be awarded Player of the Week twice.

2008-09 marked the second year in a row a Blue Demon competed at the NCAA National Outdoor Championships. Two-time BIG EAST hammer throw champion Millar made his NCAA Nationals debut after placing fourth to earn the automatic bid. The previous season, Melissa Fraser advanced to the NCAA Championships in the javelin throw.
Team MVP, two-time team captain In addition to coaching, Savage remains active in the Chicagoland running community. He served as the head race referee for the 2006 and 2007 Chicago Marathon, and head men’s referee in 2008. This year, he serves as a Chairman of the Games Committee and will be the course referee.
In addition to Millar and Fraser, Joe Strawder, Alanna Kovacs and Quiett qualified for the 2009 Mideast Regional Championship. While Millar placed fourth in the hammer throw, Kovacs also recorded a top-10 finish, placing seventh in the javelin throw competition.
An outstanding collegiate runner, Savage was a two-time captain (junior and senior seasons) and MVP of both the Blue Demon track and cross country teams during his junior year and holds a pair of Business degrees from DePaul. Although far removed from collegiate completion, he remains an active runner along with his wife Melissa, and recently celebrated his 50th year as a member of the running community.
The 2006-07 campaign saw the program make vast improvements in Savage’s first season as head coach. DePaul’s first individual BIG EAST Champion was crowned when Millar won the hammer throw for the first time at the BIG EAST Outdoor Championships. Four Blue Demons competed in the NCAA Outdoor Midwest Regional Championships and 10 new DePaul records were set between the indoor and outdoor track and field seasons. In back-to-back weeks during the outdoor season, the Blue Demons swept the team titles at the Chicagoland Championships and the Elmhurst Invitational, respectively. Success continued during Savage’s second year at the helm of the program in 2007-08. Thirteen school records, a program high, were broken over the course of the indoor and outdoor season. Two more BIG EAST champions were crowned when Millar defended his hammer title, and Fraser won the javelin throw at the Outdoor Conference Championships. Fraser’s appearance at the NCAA Outdoor National Championships was the first time a female student-athlete qualified since 2004 when Erin Moffett ran the 10,000m, and a first during the Savage era. Savage has an extensive coaching background in the Chicagoland area, serving as the head cross country and track coach at DePaul Academy (1966-68), St. George High School in Evanston (1968-69) and on the Niles West High School staff in Skokie from 1969-2002. Pat stayed on to coach with his son, Danny Savage, until 2005. He was the head cross country coach during his entire tenure and spent six of those years on the staff as the head track and field coach in the 1980’s. He also coached the cross country, track and marathon teams at Oakton Community College in Des Plaines from 1971-2003. Since 1980, he has served as the director and head coach of the Niles West/Oakton Runner’s Club. Though he still serves as director, his wife, Melissa, assumed coaching responsibilities in 2007.
Coach Savage at Lane Stadium, which now serves as the home track facility for the Blue Demons. The stadium was officially opened on May 14, 2008 during the inaugural DePaul Relays, the first home meet the Blue Demons have hosted in over 50 years.

BRANDON MURER ASSISTANT COACH
DAVE DOPEK ASSISTANT COACH The greatest sprinter in DePaul history, Dave Dopek is in his 15th season as an assistant coach with the Blue Demons. Before beginning his coaching career, Dopek inked his name into the DePaul history books. He became the school’s first individual (or team) to win an NCAA championship when he captured the 200m title at the 1995 NCAA Indoor Championship at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis. Dopek also finished second in the 200m at the 1995 outdoor championships. He has helped a number of student-athletes qualify for the BIG EAST Conference Championships, as well as the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships. He guided current graduate assistant coach Stephanie Williams to six school sprinting records. Last season, she tied Kim Smith’s seven-year-old 60m time, while Williams has an outright claim to the indoor 200m, outdoor 100m, 200m, 4x100m relay, and sprint medley school records. He was also instrumental in the career of jumper Joe Strawder. The senior enters his final year as a three-time regional qualifier, and holds the school record in the outdoor triple jump. During the 2007-08 indoor conference championships, he coached Ryan Moore to a runner-up finish in the 400m. Three sprint records were broken during the outdoor season when Williams broke Sheri Bean’s 1987 100m record, improved upon her own 200m record, and the quartet of Williams, Ivy Moffett, Kyra Coffey, and Shauna Lurey broke the 4x100m relay record during the Purdue Invitational. Dopek’s success on the national scene continued when he won a gold medal in the 200-meter dash and was a member of the title-winning 4x100-meter relay team at the 1995 United States Olympic Festival. Dopek has also experienced success on the international level. In 1995, he was on the 4x100-meter relay team that took gold at the World University Games in Fukuoka, Japan. While there, Dopek also took home a silver medal in the 200-meters. The following year he participated in the 1996 U.S. Olympic Trials in Atlanta. During his four years as a student-athlete, Dopek was the staple of the program, winning seven individual Great Midwest Conference championships-- three in the 200m and four in the 400m. He was also a member of the 4x400m relay team that took the outdoor titles in 1992 and 1995 and was a part of the 1995 4x100m relay championship squad. For his efforts, he was named the Outstanding Athlete of the 1995 Great Midwest Conference Outdoor Championships. He also earned DePaul’s Most Valuable Performer in indoor track three times and was the outdoor MVP in 1995. On Jan. 30, 2010, Dopek was inducted into the DePaul Athletics Hall of Fame.
A member of the DePaul coaching staff since 2005, Brandon Murer works with the Blue Demon throwers and contributes extensive experience on all levels to the program. The last four seasons saw the DePaul throwers experience tremendous success under Murer’s guidance. Brad Millar became the first Blue Demon to win a BIG EAST Conference individual title as he won the hammer throw at the 2007 BIG EAST Outdoor Championships. Two more conference champions were crowned in 2008 when Millar successfully defended his title, and Melissa Fraser became DePaul’s first female BIG EAST Champion for DePaul when she took the javelin throw title. Fraser went on to become the first female thrower to qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Millar made his first appearance on the national stage during the 2009 season after placing fourth in the hammer throw at the NCAA Midwest Regional Championship. In addition, the Blue Demon throwers set six new DePaul records under Murer’s tutelage while posting 14 qualifying marks during the 2009 season alone for the NCAA Regional Championships, culminating in a berth to the National championship. Murer began his college career at Indiana State, where he was a fouryear varsity letterwinner followed by two seasons with the Sycamores as an assistant coach. As a student assistant in 1997-98, he helped six throwers earn All-Missouri Valley Conference accolades. He also helped guide a hammer thrower to a MVC championship. During the 1999-2000 season, Murer was named a volunteer assistant at Indiana State where he worked with all throwers and multi-event athletes. He helped three student-athletes break school records, 20 meet records and three MVC records. Under Murer’s direction he developed 18 MVC placers, six all-conference athletes and one All-American weight thrower. Following his successful collegiate coaching stint, Murer was named an assistant coach at Danville Community High School in Indiana. As the throws coach at Danville, he developed the Indiana State High School runner-up in shot put (2000) and several regional and sectional champions. Along with his duties with the program’s throwers, Murer serves as the recruiting coordinator. Murer graduated from Indiana State University in 1997 with a degree in Fine Arts. He currently resides in the Chicago suburbs with his wife, Samantha.

ANDREW CRAYCRAFT ASSISTANT COACH
RYAN RUPCICH GRADUATE ASSISTANT COACH
Andrew Craycraft, an accomplished middledistance runner at St. Joseph’s University and the University of North Carolina, joined the DePaul Athletic staff as an assistant coach for the cross country and track and field teams in 2008. Craycraft assists both squads with recruiting and developing middle distance and distance runners. During his freshman and sophomore seasons at St. Joseph’s, Craycraft set school records in the 800m (1:48.83) and the 4x800m relay (7:25); records which still stand today. He also broke the school record in the 500m when he won the race during the 2002 Intercollegiate Association of Amateur Athletes of America Championship meet. At UNC, he won the 800m with a time of 1:52.49 at the 2003 ACC Conference Indoor Championships. His best time in the event was 1:48.91, which set a UNC men’s indoor record. Most recently, Craycraft served as a volunteer assistant coach for the Michigan State University women’s cross country and track and field teams. While Andrew was with the Spartans, they made their fifth consecutive trip to the NCAA Cross Country Championships, in addition to producing two All-Great Lakes All- Region athletes. During the track and field season, MSU sent four student-athletes to the Mid-East Regional Championships. From there, Nicole Bush qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 3,000m steeplechase and was named an All-American. Off the track, Craycraft has experienced tremendous success as both a student-athlete and a coach. During his 2004 season at UNC he was named to the ACC Academic All-Conference team, in addition to being given the Athletic Director’s Student-Athlete Award. While coaching at MSU, the cross country squad was ranked 32nd in the nation with an overall team GPA of 3.61. All-Academic Team honors were bestowed up them by the Women’s Intercollegiate Cross Country Association. After earning his degree in History from UNC, Craycraft went on to earn a Juris Doctor from the Thomas M. Cooley Law School in Lansing, Mich. He currently works for a law firm in Rockford, Ill.
Ryan Rupcich enters his first season with DePaul as a graduate assistant coach after spending a year as an assistant coach at Loras College. Rupcich plans to pursue an M.A. in Education from DePaul. He graduated from California State-Fresno in 2008 with an undergraduate degree in Kinesiology. Rupcich brings experience in the pole vault and high jump, both as a student-athlete and as a coach. As a student-athlete, he cleared a height of 4.93m in the pole vault while competing at Cal State-Fresno. While coaching, he guided Loras College track standout Chris Buresh to All-American status in the high jump. Although assisting with both cross country and track and field, he will focus on lending his expertise to the jumpers and hurdlers. Prior to his collegiate career, Rupcich served four years active duty in the United States Marine Corp. Stationed several places all across the world, he was involved in Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Operation Sweeny. He remained on inactive duty in the reserves during his time at Cal State-Fresno and was honorably discharged in 2008.
STEPHANIE WILLIAMS GRADUATE ASSISTANT COACH Stephanie Williams joins the Blue Demon coaching staff as a graduate assistant after an illustrious career on the track for DePaul. Over her four years as a student-athlete, Williams set five sprint and relay school-records while tallying numerous BIG EAST Conference qualification marks. Williams earned her undergraduate degree in Communication from DePaul in the spring of 2009. After being named a G.A., she re-enrolled into the DePaul’s College of Communication; this time to advance her bachelors degree to masters status. JEAN LENTI PONSETTO | DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS One of the nation’s most widely respected leaders in intercollegiate athletics and a driving force behind the continuing expansion and development of DePaul’s athletics program, Jean Lenti Ponsetto is now in her seventh year as DePaul’s Director of Athletics and her 34th as a member of the Blue Demon athletic family. Jeanne was named to her current position on July 1, 2002 and the Blue Demons have experienced tremendous success both on and off the playing field ever since. Ponsetto also guided the DePaul efforts in 2003 when the University announced it would join the BIG EAST Conference in 2005. An advocate for student-athlete welfare, Ponsetto initiated and provided the leadership for the SullivanMcGrath Athletics Capital Campaign which has yielded the funding resources for the renovation of Wish Soccer Field, the creation of the Cacciatore Softball Stadium and renovation of the Cherry Family Indoor Track at the Ray Meyer Center. During her seven years at the helm of the department, 14 of the 15 Blue Demon athletic programs have represented the school in NCAA championships including the men’s soccer program’s initial trip to the NCAA Tournament after winning the BIG EAST Conference regular season title. Success has also come in the classroom during Ponsetto’s tenure as the Athletic Director as over 580 Blue Demon studentathletes have been named conference Academic Honor Rolls. Ponsetto’s efforts haven’t gone unnoticed by her colleagues. For the second time in her career; Ponsetto was presented NACWAA’s Administrator of the Year Award in 2003, was the organization’s president in 2005-06. A former four-sport standout for DePaul, Ponsetto boasts a wealth of experience in three areas of DePaul athletics: as a student-athlete, coach and administrator. She had spent seven years as the senior associate director of athletics after serving 12 years as the associate director and two as an assistant director before assuming her current job in 2002. Aside from her duties at DePaul, she has served on numerous NCAA Committees including a joint NCAA/USOC Task Force. Ponsetto currently serves the NCAA as a member of the Division I Men’s Basketball Enhancement Group and is an NCAA Champion, a program highlighting key NCAA Administrators to act as spokesperson from the membership on NCAA issues. Ponsetto also chairs the Honda Awards Board of Directors and the Wade Trophy Selection Committee and is the Past President of NACWAA and a member of the NACDA Division I-AAA Board of Directors. In recent years, Ponsetto served on the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Issues Committee, the Division I Women’s Basketball Task Force, the Division I Recruiting/Early Scholarship Offer Working Group, the NCAA Amateurism Clearinghouse Advisory Group and the NCAA Work/Life Balance Task Force. This past summer Ponsetto was named the Second Vice President for the I-AAA Athletics Director Association. Ponsetto spent a five-year term as Chair of the 49-member NCAA Division I Championships/Competition Cabinet, a position she assumed in 1998 after one year as a member of the Cabinet. She was the first woman to chair a Cabinet and had the longest tenure as a Cabinet chair. Under Ponsetto’s leadership, the Championships/ Competition Cabinet had several accomplishments, most notably the expansion of championship opportunities to include all conference champions, an improved awards program, a review of the Association’s bylaws with regard to playing and practice seasons, authorization and format structure for all championships, establishment of a comprehensive certification process for the I-A Football Bowl Games and certified events. During her tenure she was a member of the NCAA Division I
Budget Committee and served as an adviser to the NCAA President during the NCAA negotiations with ESPN which yielded additional championship appearances and revenue for the Association. In 1999, Jeanne was one of only eight women appointed to the 29-person NCAA Division I Working Group to Study Men’s and Women’s Basketball Issues. This committee was formed to review matters important to the Division I membership such as freshman eligibility, graduation rates, summer recruiting, student-athlete welfare, gambling, agents and outside influences. Ponsetto also served as a member of the NCAA Men’s and Women’s Basketball Marketing Committee, which developed a plan for the potential growth in attendance and television viewership for both men’s and women’s basketball. From 1992-98, Jeanne served on the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Committee and was Chair her final two years. In this position Ponsetto was in charge of all aspects of the NCAA Tournament including the selection of the 64 team field as well as the administration of the tournament. Additionally, she was selected to serve on the NCAA Basketball Officiating Committee, which oversees the officials’ clinics and tournament officiating. Ponsetto has received several awards for her outstanding work at DePaul and for her leadership serving the NCAA members and student-athletes. At the 1998 Final Four the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association named her Administrator of the Year. In addition, the National Association of Collegiate Women’s Athletic Administrators (NACWAA) named her Administrator of the Year. Subsequently, Ponsetto was annually appointed to the NACWAA Board of Directors. A gifted public speaker, Ponsetto was the Master of Ceremonies at the 2002 and 2008 Honda Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year Awards Program and has been a faculty member at the NACWAA Executive Institute and a presenter at NCAA Regional Compliance seminars and NCAA Student Leadership Conferences. She is a frequent guest on radio and television programs regarding issues that face intercollegiate athletics and served as a studio analyst for ESPN during the 2000 NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament. Since moving into an administrative position over 20 years ago at DePaul, Ponsetto has had a significant impact on the status of the DePaul intercollegiate sports scene. She introduced four women’s sports - indoor and outdoor track, cross country and women’s soccer - to varsity status at DePaul. Under her direction DePaul has built several athletic facilities including the Sullivan Athletic Center that opened in 2000, the Ray Meyer Fitness Recreation Center that opened in 1999 and the recently completed projects in Cacciatore Stadium, Wish Field and the Cherry Family Indoor Track. Recently she negotiated long-term contracts with Ruffled Feathers as home for the men’s golf program as well as Lane Stadium as a home for the men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams. Married to former Blue Demon basketball star Joe Ponsetto, she comes from a family intertwined in education and athletics. One brother, Frank Lenti, is head football coach at Mt. Carmel High School in Chicago. In the fall of 1999, the Chicago Tribune named Frank as the high school football coach of the century in Illinois. Another brother, David, is an assistant under Frank with the Caravan. Two other brothers work for the DePaul athletics department as Michael is the Director of Athletic Facilities and Eugene is the school’s all-time winningest coach as the head softball coach. Jeanne’s sister Marilyn, who recently retired as the Teacher Coordinator for Students with Learning Disabilities in south suburban Dolton, is a DePaul graduate as are Eugene and David.

Student-athletes at DePaul University are just that: students first and athletes second. Earning a degree is a top priority for every student-athlete at DePaul. Both the men’s and women’s track and field and cross country squads were named an All-Academic team by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches’ Association. Additionally, the men’s squad boasted the highest overall GPA in the nation, edging out teams from Brown, Yale, Butler and Harvard. Individually, Melissa Fraser, Mary Cate Quiett and Brad Millar were recognized as a USTFCCCA All-Academic student-athlete. In DePaul’s first four years of BIG EAST membership, a total of 511 student-athletes were named to the BIG EAST All-Academic Team. A total of 149 student-athletes were named to the team in 2008-09 after 127 had a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better for the recognition in 2007-08. Following DePaul’s first BIG EAST campaign in 2005-06, a total of 107 achieved the league academic recognition, while 123 were honored in 2006-07 Seven of DePaul’s 15 athletic programs claimed the BIG EAST Team Excellence Award in 2008-09 for having the top team GPA among the league program’s in each sport. Women’s basketball, men’s cross country, women’s cross country, men’s soccer, women’s tennis, men’s indoor and outdoor track and field held the top team GPA among their peers. Individually, Terah Cheatham of women’s cross country, Dunja Antunovic of women’s tennis and men’s golf’s Cory Blenkush were named BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Award winners in their respective sports. The Scholar-Athlete Sports Excellence Awards are given to one student-athlete in each BIG EAST sport based on academic credentials, athletic accolades or performances and volunteer service to the community. Brad Millar was named to ESPN The Magazine’s Academic All-District Team as voted on by memebers of CoSIDA. In the newest data submitted to the NCAA, the commitment of DePaul student-athletes toward graduation is evident. The Academic Progress Rate (APR) measures both the eligibility and retention of student-athletes receiving any level of athletics aid. The women’s basketball, women’s tennis, golf and softball teams were recognized by the NCAA for their outstanding academic APR performances. Each program was recognized by the NCAA for having multi-year APR scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports. DePaul’s total of four teams honored is tied for the fourth-highest total among all BIG EAST schools and improved upon the three teams that picked up the honor a year ago. This off-the-field success comes from key factors at DePaul. First, DePaul’s academic standards require student-athletes to: complete a minimum of eight hours of placeable credits per quarter a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 2.0 meet with athletic academic advising staff

Despite its growing enrollment, DePaul maintains a small school atmosphere. DePaul boasts an excellent faculty-to-student ratio of 17-1, although classes of 15-25 students are quite common. This provides an ideal setting for personal academic attention - one of DePaul’s most unique qualities. A student who is not as well prepared may need more help with understanding how to succeed in the college system. Ultimately, the student makes the decision. DePaul provides a strong academic support system for each student-athlete, but it’s the student’s motivation and ability to take the assistance that makes the difference. This approach helps students build the decision-making skills they need to succeed in life. Handling a college sports schedule can be very demanding, but understanding the stress and time demands that accompany college athletics allows DePaul’s Athletic Academic Advising department to give each student the support and guidance needed to launch a successful academic career. By working closely with an extensive network of professors, administrators and student-athletes, the advisors insure that each Blue Demon reaches his or her full academic potential. The staff personally assists each student-athlete with class selection, scheduling, tutoring, and, most importantly, establishing good study skills. They also communicate regularly with professors about each student’s course work and maintain records of each student-athlete’s progress toward graduation. The advisors continue assisting student-athletes through graduation, not just until their eligibility expires. Their services include tutoring, advising, course selection and conducting the NCAA Life Skills Program. To help facilitate the success of student-athletes, Athletic Academic Advising works closely with the offices of Professional Career Development and Placement, Residence Life, University Ministry, Student Financial Aid, Student Life, Student Counseling Services, and the Writing Center. At a high-profile school like DePaul, that’s important.

NATIONALLY RESPECTED. PERSONALLY FOCUSED. DePaul University, with more than 23,000 students, is the only one of the nation’s 10 largest private universities where the faculty priority is on teaching. Founded on the Vincentian principle of access for everyone, we remain committed to providing a quality education through personal attention to students from a wide range of backgrounds. RECOGNIZED FOR ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE DePaul offers a high caliber, challenging learning environment that is respected by employers, community leaders and other universities. Many of our more than 200 graduate and undergraduate programs of study have earned national acclaim. Most importantly, more than 93 percent of employers report they are pleased with the caliber of DePaul graduates. HANDS ON LEARNING, PRACTICAL KNOWLEDGE DePaul’s location in Chicago provides countless opportunities for class projects, research, internships and experiential learning programs that bring theory to life. Students synthesize knowledge across multiple courses to solve problems, preparing them to succeed after graduation. A PASSION FOR SERVICE AND SOCIAL JUSTICE Our nationally ranked service-learning program integrates the service concept into our curriculum and inspires many students to make a lifelong commitment to service and social justice. They complement the university’s own dedication to serving first-generation and underserved student populations and to addressing social issues through more than 45 specialized centers and institutes. CAPITALIZING ON CHICAGO CONNECTIONS DePaul’s long-term partnerships throughout Chicago lead to extensive educational and career opportunities for students in the corporate, civic and cultural arenas. Our faculty, active in research and consulting, bring real-world experience into the classroom every day. Our students benefit from the networks of their professors, as well as the more than 82,000 alumni who live in the metropolitan area. FOCUSED ON TEACHING, FOCUSED ON STUDENTS Teaching comes first at DePaul — more than 97 percent of all classes are taught by faculty members, not teaching assistants. Students are considered partners in research and community action, and are often credited by name in publications and presentations.
OPEN DOORS DEEPEN RELATIONSHIPS Because the average class has fewer than 30 students, our faculty members know their students’ names, concerns and goals. Professors are accessible and approachable in class, through regular office hours and via e-mail. A GLOBAL SOCIETY WITHIN THE CLASSROOM Driven by a respect for the inherent dignity of all people, DePaul welcomes students and employees from all ethnicities, religions and backgrounds. By routinely incorporating multiple viewpoints into academic and student life, we have become a model of diversity on campus. In 2006, The Princeton Review ranked DePaul No. 1 in the nation in the “Diverse Student Population” category. We are proud to be among the top 100 universities in the nation for conferring degrees on students of color. For more on DePaul University:

The city of Chicago, America’s third-largest city, is home to DePaul University and offers a student-athlete a variety opportunities. Incorporated as a town of 350 people in 1833, Chicago is known as a city of neighborhoods. Nearly 200 areas of the city contain their own distinct characteristics and flavor. With a city population of nearly three million people and a metropolitan population of over eight million residents, the “Windy City” offers endless options of entertainment, education and exploration. The city itself is graced with blue skies and blue waters, thus Chicago provides countless opportunities for indoor and outdoor activities. Lake Michigan and its miles of beach front is within walking distance of DePaul’s Lincoln Park Campus. With 29 miles of lakefront, including a 22-mile bike path, summer in the city provides multiple opportunities for relaxing along Lake Michigan.
Chicago is also America’s greenest metropolitan area, featuring 560 city parks along with a variety of museums and zoos. Lincoln Park Zoo, the world’s largest free public zoo, is just blocks from DePaul’s Lincoln Park campus. Dozen of restaurants, cafes, theaters and stores are also within walking distance of the Lincoln Park campus, and an easy-to-learn mass transit system connects campus to the entire Chicagoland area. Bicycling magazine annually ranks Chicago as the best big city for bicycling in the United States. There are nearly 150 miles of paved trails, off-road trails and bike lanes for cyclists. From a business standpoint, Chicago is one of the world’s top corporate cities. Always bustling with activity, the Windy City is home to the Chicago Board of Trade and the Midwest Stock Exchange along with such companies as Amoco Oil, Boeing, McDonald’s and United Airlines. This provides the DePaul student-athlete with a huge network of potential contacts and employers after graduation. Over 80,000 DePaul alumni live in the Chicagoland area, giving current Blue Demon student-athletes a strong start towards a career in their chosen field. The hub of campus life at DePaul takes place on the Lincoln Park campus. Lincoln Park is one of the most prestigious, attractive and desirable neighborhoods in all of urban America. The campus is situated in the middle of a beautiful residential neighborhood with historic brownstones and tree-lined streets. It is approximately nine blocks west of the shores of Lake Michigan and three miles from the downtown area. The Mayor’s Office of Special Events schedules 20 major events each year. Among these events are: Taste of Chicago, Blues Festival, Chicago Outdoor Film Festival, Venetian Night, the Air & Water Show, Jazz Festival and New Year’s Eve fireworks at Buckingham Fountain. From May to September, with average temperatures in the mid-70’s, Chicago is bustling with neighborhood festivals. Every weekend, you can find a number of events throughout the city. Each neighborhood festival has its own theme with a number of local bands and restaurants participating.

Along with the Blue Demons, Chicago plays host to seven major professional sports franchises. The Bears of the NFL attract the city’s attention in the fall and winter while the Bulls of the NBA hit the hardwood in the winter. The NHL’s Chicago Blackhawks take to the ice in the winter while the Cubs and White Sox play all summer on the North and Southsides of town. The Chicago Fire hit the pitch in the summer with Major League Soccer while the city’s newest franchise, the Chicago Sky, take the court in the WNBA.

With 30 years under its belt, The BIG EAST Conference continues on a path of success in and out of the athletic arena. The goals have always been the same. The league wants and expects to compete at the highest level and does so with integrity and sportsmanship. The commendable performances of the student-athletes at BIG EAST schools are the indicators of the league’s proud tradition of success. Individually in women’s sports, Providence’s Dannette Doetzel won the 10,000 meters at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Connecticut’s Maya Moore was the conference’s sixth winner of the Wade Trophy as the top player in women’s basketball. Notre Dame’s Kerri Hanks won the Hermann Trophy, the top award in women’s soccer. On the men’s side, Connecticut and Villanova advanced to the Final Four in basketball. The 2008-09 campaign was arguably the best men’s basketball season in the history of the BIG EAST with the league setting NCAA standards with three No. 1 tournament seeds, four teams in the round of the Elite Eight and five in the Sweet 16. The BIG EAST has continued to produce student-athletes who were at the forefront of athletic and academic achievement. In 2008-09, 19 BIG EAST players were chosen to their respective ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Teams, including eight first-team selections. Nearly 400 student-athletes have earned academic all-America honors. The BIG EAST became the nation’s largest Division I-A conference in 2005-06 when five new members began competing. The new schools were: University of Cincinnati, DePaul University, University of Louisville, Marquette University and the University of South Florida. BIG EAST institutions reside in nine of the nation’s top 34 largest media markets, including New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Tampa, Pittsburgh, Hartford, Milwaukee and Cincinnati. With its newest members, BIG EAST markets contain almost one fourth of all television households in the U.S. Since opening its doors in 1979, the league has won 26 national championships in six different sports and 126 student-athletes have won individual national titles.
The BIG EAST has enjoyed tremendous basketball success, especially in this decade. In 2008-09, the BIG EAST produced four of the eight Final Four teams in men’s and women’s basketball. It was only the second time in NCAA history that one conference placed that many Final Four teams in the same season. In 2003-04, Connecticut became the first school in NCAA history to win the men’s and women’s NCAA basketball titles in the same season. In men’s basketball, BIG EAST squads have won three of the last 11 NCAA championships. BIG EAST women’s teams have taken six of the last 10 NCAA titles. The BIG EAST became a reality on May 31, 1979, following a meeting of athletic directors from Providence College, St. John’s, Georgetown and Syracuse universities. Seton Hall, Connecticut and Boston College completed the original seven school alliance. BIG EAST men’s basketball games are regular sellouts at campus and major public arenas, including the annual men’s BIG EAST Championship in Madison Square Garden. The women’s basketball championship has led all conferences in attendance for the past six years. More than 550 BIG EAST student-athletes have earned all America recognition and dozens have won individual NCAA national championships. The BIG EAST has been well represented in U.S. or foreign national and Olympic teams. Several athletes earned gold medals in each of the last six summer Olympiads. The BIG EAST has its headquarters in Providence where the conference administers to more than 5,500 athletes.
DEPAUL AND THE BIG EAST...
Brad Millar claimed DePaul’s first BIG EAST individual championship with a firstplace finish in the hammer throw at the 2007 BIG EAST Outdoor Track and Field Championships before defending his title with a 2008 championship. In 2009, he was named the runner-up champion as a junior. Millar earned all-conference accolades after placing second in the weight throw and both the 2008 and 2009 indoor championship. Melissa Fraser was first woman to win an individual BIG EAST Championship track and field title. In 2008 she finished first in the javelin throw at the outdoor championships, as well as qualify for the NCAA National Championships. Brad Millar became DePaul’s first Field Athlete of the Week on April 1, 2008. Mary Cate Quiett was the first female Track Athlete of the Week while Joe Strawder was the second-ever male Field Athlete of the Week. They both claimed the honor on Dec. 8, 2009. Matthew Graham was the DePaul Cross Country program’s first ever BIG EAST Athlete of the Week on Sept. 11, 2008. The following season Graham made DePaul history by winning every regular-season race and was the only student-athlete to earn BIG EAST Athlete of the Week honors twice. He placed 14th at the league championships to be named the first All-BIG EAST Conference selction for the Blue Demons.

The Cherry Family Indoor Track was dedicated in May of 2006 after it was improved with a banked surface and is conveniently located within the Ray Meyer Fitness and Recreation Center on the Lincoln Park Campus. It serves as one of the primary practice facilities for the Blue Demons indoor track and field teams. While open to DePaul’s general student population, as well as the Lincoln Park community, the Blue Demons have exclusive access to the track during practice hours. In addition to the Cherry Family Indoor Track, the Blue Demons utilize the resources at the Sullivan Athletic Center, as well as the Windy City Fieldhouse. The four-lane, 200-meter banked track overlooking the gymnasium area boasts exquisite views of Chicago’s skyline and the surrounding Lincoln Park neighborhood.
