Mark Ardizzone is in his 14th season as the head coach of the DePaul women’s tennis program. The winningest coach in the program’s history, Ardizzone has established himself as mentor both on and off the court and continues to lead his squads to the highest level and compete against the nation’s elite. This past fall, Ardizzone coached Anna Redecsi and Selma Salkovic to the ITA Indoor Championship . Redecsi and Salkovic made DePaul history by becoming the first Blue Demon pair to be crowned the ITA Midwest Doubles Champion. The pair continued to set a new standard in Blue Demon tennis as they won their first match and advanced to the quarterfinals of the Indoor National Championship. Redecsi and Salkovic were again rewarded for their fall season as the pair begins 2010 as the No. 9 doubles pair in the Campbell/ITA College Tennis Rankings while the Blue Demon team enters the rankings at No. 45. A long list of program firsts highlighted the 2009 season, most notably a second place finish in the BIG EAST Conference Championship. The Blue Demons shut out league opponents on five occasions, while suffering just two narrow losses to the then-No. 3 team in the nation, Notre Dame. After cruising to the championship match, current Blue Demons assistant coach Dunja Antunovic, Katarina Milinkovic, Redecsi, and Salkovic were selected to the BIG EAST All-Conference Team. In addition, Ardizzone was voted BIG EAST Coach of the Year while he also picked up the ITA Midwest Region Coach of the Year award which is voted on by his peers. An accomplished recruiter, Coach Ardizzone has brought to DePaul some highly taughted recruits and his student-athletes have flourished in his system. A record-high three student-athletes were selected on four occasions as the BIG EAST Player of the Week in 2009. Antunovic and Salkovic earned the honor once, while Redecsi added the title to her resume twice that season. In addition, Gia McKnight had a breakout season, posting a team-high 30-8 singles record. The Blue Demons spent the entire 2009 season in the ITA team rankings and reached a program-best No. 26 while ending the year at No. 47. Individually, Redecsi registered as high as No. 84 on the singles poll, while she earned a doubles ranking as high as No. 64 with Salkovic as her partner. Antunovic and Kirsten Gambrell ended the season at No. 80 in the doubles poll, but spent more than a month as the No. 36-ranked team after a spectacular run at the ITA Midwest Regional. In the Midwest Region, the team ended the 2008-09 season as the No. 6-ranked squad. Redecsi and Antunovic represented the Blue Demons in the singles poll, registering in at No. 9 and No. 17, respectively. Gambrell and Antunovic ranked in at No. 9 on the doubles poll, while Redecsi and Salkovic ended the season at No. 10. 2009-10 DePaul Women’s Tennis Guide | Page 2
Off the court, Ardizzone has instilled a high standard of academic integrity and community involvement in his student-athletes. Antunovic earned the National ITA/Arthur Ashe Award for Leadership and Sportsmanship, named to ESPN The Magazine’s Academic All-District second team, and was the BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete Sports Excellence Award winner. As a team, they were recognized by the NCAA for having a perfect Academic Progress Rate (APR) which ranked in the top-ten percent of all Division I women’s tennis teams. The APR provides a real-time look at a team’s academic success each semester or quarter by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete. The APR includes eligibility, retention, and graduation in the calculation and provides a clear picture of the academic culture in each sport. The 2008 campaign saw a significant milestone occur in Ardizzone’s career. On March 8, 2008, he picked up his 200th victory as a Division I head coach. In BIG EAST action, the Blue Demons posted a 7-4 record to finish in fourth place, up two spots from the previous year. BIG EAST All-Tournament honors were given to Antunovic and Gergana Ganeva. DePaul ended the year No. 61 on the ITA National Rankings and No. 9 in the Midwest. Academic success was equally prominent in the women’s program during the 2007-08 season. Eight student-athletes were selected to the BIG EAST All-Academic Team. Antunovic was named to the conference’s Scholar-Athlete Sports Excellence Team, in addition to being the recipient of the prestigious ITA/Cissie Leary Award for Sportsmanship. As a team, the women were honored by the BIG EAST as Team Excellence Award winners. The 2007 campaign saw the Blue Demons fight through a series of injuries to finish with a winning record of 13-12 and a BIG EAST record of 6-5 despite playing five weeks of the season shorthanded. Antu-
novic posted a 26-5 singles record, reached a national ranking of No. 77 and picked up All-BIG EAST Tournament honors. All eight members of the squad made the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll and Petra Rehusova was the Midwest Region recipient of the ITA/Arthur Ashe Award for Leadership and Sportsmanship. The 2005 season gave DePaul its first 20-win campaign. The Blue Demons went 20-8 overall and only lost one conference match in their final season in Conference USA. In 2000, DePaul spent four weeks ranked in the nation’s top 75. Off the court, the squad was honored by the ITA as an All-Academic Team for boasting a cumulative GPA of 3.47. Individually, Barbara Fuzesi was named to the ITA Scholar-Athlete All-American team. Ardizzone came to DePaul from the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, where he was the assistant coach for both the men’s and women’s teams. Both of those teams qualified for the National Junior College championships during his tenure. Truly committed to the game, he has served as Chairman of the NCAA Midwest Region ranking committee. Ardizzone has a long history of coaching tennis. He served as the Director of the Nike Tennis Camp in 1998 and has worked at the Northern Illinois Tennis Camp. Mark was also the assistant coach at Northwest Missouri State and was the professional at both the Arrowhead Swim and Tennis and Lockport Racket Clubs. As a player, Mark was a two-year captain at Northwest Missouri State where he was nationally ranked in both singles and doubles. Off the court, he was an Arthur Ashe Sportsmanship Award winner and captured numerous scholarships. Prior to playing at NWMS, Ardizzone played two seasons at the College of DuPage.

The definition of an exemplary student-athlete from 2005-09, Dunja Antunovic moves from the court into the role of a graduate assistant coach in 2009. Antunovic will assist head coach Mark Ardizzone in all aspects of the Blue Demon program. Antunovic will assist in recruiting while helping with player development on the court and in the classroom. One of the most decorated women’s tennis players, Antunovic won on the court while her leadership skills off the court garnered her recognition from DePaul University and from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. The President of DePaul’s Captains’ Council in 2008-09, Antunovic served as the student-athletes’ voice in the athletics department. As president, Antunovic spearheaded numerous community service efforts including DePaul’s Feed the Homeless Sandwich Drive, and working in the St. Vincent DePaul Parish soup kitchen.
sportsmanship and leadership on the court, as well as scholastic, extracurricular, and tennis achievements. Antunovic was also awarded the ITA/Cissie Leary Award for Sportmanship in 2008. A three-time BIG EAST All-Conference selection, Antunovic finished her Blue Demon career with 97 singles victories and 90 doubles wins. Antunovic helped DePaul to a second place BIG EAST Championship finish in 2009 while she and doubles partner Kirsten Gambrell became the first DePaul pair to reach the ITA Midwest Regional Championship match in 2008. Following a successful collegiate career, Antunovic played professionally in Hungary in the summer of 2009. Antunovic received her Bachelors of Science in communication and women’s studies in 2009 and is currently pursuing her Masters degree in Journalism.

REV. DENNIS HOLTSCHNEIDER University President
The Rev. Dennis H. Holtschneider, C.M., became DePaul University’s 11th president on July 1, 2004. Since his inauguration, he has led the successful completion of the university’s prior strategic plan and creation of its current six-year plan, VISION twenty12. His leadership and expertise stem from a broad range of higher education experiences. He was an administrator with St. John’s University in Queens, N.Y., from 1996 to 1999, first as assistant dean of Notre Dame College and later as associate dean of the university’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Concurrently he served as an assistant professor of higher education in St. John’s Graduate School of Education. He gained a university-wide perspective as executive vice president and chief operating officer at Niagara University in Niagara Falls, N.Y., from 2000 to 2004, where he directed the university’s strategic planning efforts and daily operations of the campus. Adding research to experience, Father Holtschneider led two national studies of examining trends in governance and leadership in American Catholic colleges and universities. He is the author and co-author of one book and numerous articles on U.S. higher education and Catholic higher education, as well as a frequent consultant and speaker on these topics.
JEAN LENTI PONSETTO Athletics Director
One of the nation’s most widely respected leaders in intercollegiate athletics and a driving force behind the continuing expansion and development of DePaul’s athletics program, Jean Lenti Ponsetto is now in her eighth year as DePaul’s Director of Athletics and her 35th as a member of the Blue Demon athletic family. Ponsetto was named to her current position on July 1, 2002 and the Blue Demons have experienced tremendous success both on and off the playing field ever since. She also guided the DePaul efforts in 2003 when the University announced it would join the BIG EAST Conference in 2005. An advocate for student-athlete welfare, Ponsetto initiated and provided the leadership for the Sullivan-McGrath Athletics Capital Campaign which has yielded the funding resources for the renovation of Wish Soccer Field, the creation of the Cacciatore Softball Stadium and renovation of the Cherry Family Indoor Track at the Ray Meyer Center. During her seven years at the helm of the department, 14 of the 15 Blue Demon athletic programs have represented the school in NCAA championships including seven straight NCAA appearances by the women’s basketball team, two trips to the Women’s College World Series for the softball program, and the men’s soccer program’s initial trip to the NCAA Tournament after winning the BIG EAST Conference regular season title. Success has also come in the classroom during Ponsetto’s tenure as the athletics director as over 700 Blue Demon student-athletes have been named to conference academic honor rolls. The 2008-09 academic year saw the men’s track and field program post the highest cumulative grade-point average in the country by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. Among the 16 programs in the BIG EAST Conference, the Blue Demons led the way academically in women’s basketball, men’s cross country, women’s cross country, men’s soccer, women’s tennis, men’s indoor track and field, and men’s outdoor track and field. In the Spring of 2009, she was named Under Armour AD of the Year for the NCAA Division I Central Region. For the second time in her career, Ponsetto was presented NACWAA’s Administrator of the Year Award in 2003 and was the organization’s president in 2005-06. Most recently, she added duties as president of the Division I-AAA Athletics Directors Association (D1-AAA ADA) for 2009-10. Prior to being named president, she was the second vice president for the I-AAA Athletics Directors Association. Ponsetto currently serves the NCAA as a member of the Division I Men’s Basketball Enhancement Group and is an NCAA Champion, a program highlighting key NCAA administrators to

His expertise has led to service on numerous external committees and boards. In January 2009, Father Holtschneider was appointed to the Illinois Reform Commission and was appointed to the School Board of the Archdiocese of Chicago for a three-year term. He is a member of the National Leadership Roundtable on Church Management, which promotes excellence and best practices in management, finances and human resource development of the Catholic Church in the U.S. In addition, he currently serves as a trustee of Niagara University and the Chicago History Museum, and he is a director of the Economic Club of Chicago. He also chairs the Education Advisory Board of the Chicago 2016 Committee, working to bring the Olympics to Chicago, and he is on the Board of Directors of the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities. He is a trustee for Ascension Health, the nation’s largest Catholic and largest nonprofit health system. A Detroit native, he earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Niagara in 1985. He studied for the priesthood at Mary Immaculate Seminary in Northampton, Pa., and was ordained in 1989. Father Holtschneider studied at Harvard University and received his doctorate in administration, planning and social policy in 1997 after writing a dissertation on the early history of financial aid in the United States. He has been a case researcher and writer for Harvard’s schools of Education, Medicine and Public Health. After ordination, Father Holtschneider served as director and then rector of the Vincentian Community’s college seminary program at Ozone Park in New York City. While in New York, he served as a clinical associate professor of higher education at the State University of New York at Buffalo, teaching one doctoral seminar each fall. Currently, he is a faculty member and board member of the Boston College Institute for Administrators in Catholic Higher Education. He continues to teach at Boston College’s summer Institute for Administrators in Catholic Higher Education.

Ponsetto also chairs the Honda Awards Board of Directors and the Wade Trophy Selection Committee and is the past president of NACWAA and a member of the NACDA Division I-AAA Board of Directors. In recent years, Ponsetto served on the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Issues Committee, the Division I Women’s Basketball Task Force, the Division I Recruiting/Early Scholarship Offer Working Group, the NCAA Amateurism Clearinghouse Advisory Group and the NCAA Work/Life Balance Task Force. Ponsetto also served as a member of the NCAA Men’s and Women’s Basketball Marketing Committee, which developed a plan for the potential growth in attendance and television viewership for both men’s and women’s basketball. Since moving into an administrative position over 20 years ago at DePaul, Ponsetto has had a significant impact on the status of the DePaul intercollegiate sports scene. She introduced four women’s sports - indoor and outdoor track, cross country and women’s soccer - to varsity status at DePaul. Under her direction DePaul has built several athletic facilities including the Sullivan Athletic Center that opened in 2000, the Ray Meyer Fitness Recreation Center that opened in 1999 and the recently completed projects in Cacciatore Stadium, Wish Field and the Cherry Family Indoor Track. Recently she negotiated long-term contracts with Ruffled Feathers Golf Club as home for the men’s golf program as well as Lane Stadium as a home for the men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams. Ponsetto is a member of both NACDA and NACWAA and is also involved in several community and charitable organizations. Following graduation from DePaul in 1978, the former four-sport standout was named the school’s first assistant women’s basketball coach by then head coach Doug Bruno. Her work within the Chicago sports scene has been duly noted. Ponsetto was named one of the top 100 most influential women in Chicago by the Chicago Sun-Times (she was ranked second in sports category behind Chicago Bears owner Virginia McCaskey) in 2004. Ponsetto was inducted into the Chicagoland Sports Hall of Fame in 2007, whose membership includes Ray Meyer, Mike Ditka, Walter Payton and Michael Jordan. Married to former Blue Demon basketball star Joe Ponsetto, the current Assistant Village Manager and Village Prosecutor in west suburban Maywood, she comes from a family intertwined in education and athletics. One brother, Frank Lenti, is head football coach at Mt. Carmel High School in Chicago. In the fall of 1999, the Chicago Tribune named Frank as the high school football coach of the century in Illinois. Another brother, David, is an assistant under Frank with the Caravan. Two other brothers work for the DePaul athletics department as Michael is the Director of Athletic Facilities and Eugene is the school’s all-time winningest coach as the head softball coach. Jeanne’s sister Marilyn, who recently retired as the Teacher Coordinator for Students with Learning Disabilities in south suburban Dolton, is a DePaul graduate as are Eugene and David.
Student-athletes at DePaul University are just that: students first and athletes second. Earning a degree is a top priority for every student-athlete at DePaul. • In DePaul’s first four years of BIG EAST membership, a total of 511 student-athletes have been named to the BIG EAST All-Academic Team. A record total of 144 student-athletes were named to the team following the 2008-09 academic year after 133 were named to the team in 2007-08 and 127 had a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better for the recognition in 2006-07. Following the first BIG EAST campaign in 2005-06, a total of 107 earned league academic recognition. • Seven of DePaul’s 15 athletic programs claimed the BIG EAST Team Excellence Award in 2007-08 for having the top team GPA among the league program’s in each sport. Women’s basketball, men’s cross country, women’s cross country, men’s soccer, women’s tennis, men’s indoor track and field and men’s outdoor track and field held the top team GPA among their peers. The men’s track and field program held the nation’s highest cumulative GPA when the team was honored by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. Individually, Terah Cheatham from the women’s cross country team, Cory Blenkush from the golf program, and women’s tennis student-athlete Dunja Antunovic were selected as the 2008-09 BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Award winners in their respective sports. The Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Awards are given to one student-athlete in each BIG EAST sport based on academic credentials, athletic accolades or performances and volunteer service to the community. • A total of 120 student-athletes were named to DePaul University’s Dean’s List for the Fall 2008 and Winter 2009 academic quarters for holding a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher. Current women’s tennis assistant coach Dunja Antunovic was named CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine second team academic all-district while softball student-athlete Amber Patton was named a second team ESPN the Magazine Academic All-American and was a finalist for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award that recognizes excellence in the classroom, character and community, as well as competition on the field. • In the newest data submitted to the NCAA, the commitment of DePaul student-athletes toward graduation is evident. DePaul’s Academic Progress Rate (APR) for men’s soccer is 987. This rate measures both the eligibility and retention of student-athletes receiving any level of athletics aid. The women’s basketball, golf, softball and women’s tennis teams were recognized by the NCAA for their outstanding academic APR performances. Each program was recognized by the NCAA for having multi-year APR scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports. DePaul’s total of four teams honored represents the fourth-highest total among all BIG EAST schools. Golf, softball and women’s tennis all maintained a perfect four-year rolling rate of 1000. Golf was one of seven BIG EAST programs on the list while women’s tennis is one of six conference schools to earn the honor. The DePaul softball program is one of four teams ranked in the top 25 and just one of five BIG EAST programs to garner the academic honors. The women’s basketball program was one of three BIG EAST teams honored and just one of eight to receive the Public Recognition Award and play in the NCAA Championship this season.
TRUE STUDENT-ATHLETES
One of the cornerstones of the DePaul men’s and women’s tennis programs is success not only on the court, but also in the classroom. The Blue Demons are always among the league leaders in the classroom as the women’s tennis team earned the BIG EAST Academic Award of Distinction for having the highest GPA of any women’s tennis programs in the BIG EAST Conference. In the first four seasons of BIG EAST membership, the men’s and women’s tennis teams totaled nearly 50 conference academic honorees. Outside of BIG EAST academic accolades, both the men’s and women’s teams have been honored by Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) for their academic achievements. Both the men’s and women’s team earned ITA All-Academic Team honors for having a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or better in 2009. Also in 2009 eight student-athletes earned ITA Scholar-Athlete status for having a GPA least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale). On the men’s side, Alasdair Graetz, Vanja Grgec and Matija Palinic earned the distinction while Dunja Antunovic, Cali Gustafson, Anna Redecsi, Selma Salkovic and Sandra Zmak were awarded the status for the women.
• This off-the-field success comes from key factors at DePaul. First, DePaul’s academic standards require student-athletes to: • Complete a minimum of eight hours of placeable credits per quarter, • Minimum cumulative grade-point average of 2.0, • Meet with athletic academic advising staff. • Despite its growing enrollment, DePaul maintains a small school atmosphere. DePaul boasts an excellent faculty-to-student ratio of 17-1, although classes of 15-25 students are quite common. This provides an ideal setting for personal academic attention - one of DePaul’s most unique qualities. • A student who is not as well prepared may need more help with understanding how to succeed in the college system. Ultimately, the student makes the decision. DePaul provides a strong academic support system for each student-athlete, but it’s the student’s motivation and ability to take the assistance that makes the difference. This approach helps students build the decision-making skills they need to succeed in life. • Handling a college sports schedule can be very demanding, but understanding the stress and time demands that accompany college athletics allows DePaul’s Athletic Academic Advising department to give each student the support and guidance needed to launch a successful academic career. By working closely with an extensive network of professors, administrators and student-athletes, the advisors insure that each Blue Demon reaches his or her full academic potential. The staff personally assists each student-athlete with class selection, scheduling, tutoring, and, most importantly, establishing good study skills. They also communicate regularly with professors about each student’s course work and maintain records of each student-athlete’s progress toward graduation. The advisors continue assisting student-athletes through graduation, not just until their eligibility expires. Their services include tutoring, advising, course selection and conducting the NCAA Life Skills Program. • To help facilitate the success of student-athletes, Athletic Academic Advising works closely with the offices of Professional Career Development and Placement, Residence Life, University Ministry, Student Financial Aid, Student Life, Student Counseling Services, and the Writing Center. At a high-profile school like DePaul, that’s important.

• The city of Chicago, America’s third-largest city, is home to DePaul University and offers a student-athlete a variety of opportunities. • Incorporated as a town of 350 people in 1833, Chicago is known as a city of neighborhoods. Nearly 200 areas of the city contain their own distinct characteristics and flavor. • With a city population of nearly three million people and a metropolitan population of over eight million residents, the “Windy City” offers endless options of entertainment, education and exploration. • The city itself is graced with blue skies and blue waters, thus Chicago provides countless opportunities for indoor and outdoor activities. Lake Michigan and its miles of beach front is within walking distance of DePaul’s Lincoln Park Campus. With 29 miles of lakefront, including a 22-mile bike path, summer in the city provides multiple opportunities for relaxing along Lake Michigan.
• Chicago is also America’s greenest metropolitan area, featuring 560 city parks along with a variety of museums and zoos. Lincoln Park Zoo, the world’s largest free public zoo, is just blocks from DePaul’s Lincoln Park campus. Dozen of restaurants, cafes, theaters and stores are also within walking distance of the Lincoln Park campus, and an easy-to-learn mass transit system connects campus to the entire Chicagoland area. Bicycling magazine annually ranks Chicago as the best big city for bicycling in the United States. There are nearly 150 miles of paved trails, off-road trails and bike lanes for cyclists. • From a business standpoint, Chicago is one of the world’s top corporate cities. Year’s Eve fireworks at Buckingham Fountain. From May to September, with average temperatures in the mid-70’s, Chicago is bustling with neighborhood festivals. Every weekend, you can find a number of events throughout the city. Each neighborhood festival has its own theme with a number of local bands and restaurants participating. • Along with the Blue Demons, Chicago plays host to seven major professional sports franchises. The Bears of the NFL attract the city’s attention in the fall and winter while the Bulls of the NBA hit the hardwood in the winter. The NHL’s Chicago Blackhawks take to the ice in the winter while the Cubs and White Sox play all summer on the North and Southsides of town. The Chicago Fire hit the pitch in the summer with Major League Soccer while the city’s newest franchise, the Chicago Sky, take the court in the WNBA.
