2010 is going to be a challenging year for us with reduced funding across the board and a full scale reconfiguration of homeless services in Dublin. However, although there are undeniable challenges, this is also a time for us to stop and examine what we are doing, to talk to you, our service users and our partner agencies to ensure that we are getting the very best outcomes for those we support. By working together and focusing on the needs of our clients I believe that Depaul Ireland will move through a turbulent time and come out stronger and even more responsive to the needs of homeless people. We continue to rely on the support of all our staff, volunteers, partner agencies, funders and the general public in order to achieve this and I thank you for this.
Kerry Anthony, Chief Executive
BACK ON YOUR FEET To mark the arrival of spring, we have launched our ‘Back on Your Feet’ campaign in an effort to raise essential funds for our services. The campaign is calling on people to get back on their feet to help others get back on theirs. We are asking people to take up the challenge and participate in mini/half/full marathons, in Ireland and abroad in aid of Depaul Ireland. This support will make a real difference in the lives of those who Depaul will work with in 2010. Each year there are a huge number of walk/jog/run events happening nationally and internationally. We’ve compiled a list of some such events on our website, but there are also full websites dedicated to promoting upcoming marathons and mini-marathons. For instance, check out: www.runireland.ie www.runrunrun.co.uk www.marathonguide.com Anyone who is interested is encouraged to pop an email to teamdepaul@depaulireland.org or ring the Dublin or Belfast office to register your information and request a resource pack and sponsorship cards. We also have a facebook page which we will use to connect with and motivate those who would like to participate.

KERRY ANTHONY RECEIVES MBE This year got off to a great start with the news that our CEO, Kerry Anthony, was named in the Queens New years Honours list and awarded an MBE in recognition of her service to social housing, in the field of homelessness. This is such an achievement as not only is Kerry one of the youngest leaders in the voluntary and charity sector in Ireland, she was also one of the youngest recipients of the MBE in the awards list in Northern Ireland. Speaking about the MBE, Kerry shared the honour with all involved in Depaul, “I would like to say to you all that although I have been given this honour this can never be down to one person alone and I believe strongly that this is a reflection of the work of Depaul in Ireland. We should all feel proud of this achievement as it acknowledges for me the work that is happening each day, in each of our services. Thank you to all of you for the kind words I have received about this over the last few months.” Kerry will be attending Buckingham Palace in May to receive the honour.

DEPAUL NEWS AWARD FOR LEADING ON VISION & STRATEGY CEO, Kerry Anthony, was recently given an award from the Voyager Leadership Awards by CO3, in Northern Ireland for Leadership in Vision and Strategy at a conference in Derry. This is the third honour awarded to the young charity leader since 2009, including the organisation Investors in People (IIP) award and an MBE (see cover). At the conference Kerry delivered a master class on the topic assisted by Depaul Ireland Director of finance, Aoife Watters and Depaul Ireland Trustee, Sr. Nuala Kelly. Speaking about the award Kerry stated, “I was honoured to be recognised in the vision and strategy category as we strive to be a visionary and flexible organisation that engages with a changing environment. This is reflected in our current five year strategic plan, titled ‘Why Not?’.
Donna Traynor, Roger Courtney, Courtney Consulting & Kerry Anthony In developing the plan the service users, staff, stakeholders and Board of trustees were all extensively consulted to ensure the strategic aims did not divert from their needs.”
VISIT TO DEPAUL UKRAINE At the beginning of the year, Kerry Anthony and Sr. Nuala Kelly (Trustee) visited Depaul Kharkiv to see our work in Ukraine. Both were deeply moved and said it was inspiring to see the Depaul vision, mission and values being lived so fully in another, completely different environment. While there, Kerry provided some training for the Director and Project manager and also did a presentation on the work of Depaul Ireland. CEO of Depaul International, Mark McGreevy, and the CEO’s of each country (Ireland, UK, Slovakia, USA & Ukraine) are now working together to develop a ‘connected strategy’ to examine how we can best use the knowledge and skills in each country to support the ongoing work and development of the Depaul Group.
COMMUNITY BEFRIENDING PROGRAMME The befriending programme got off to a busy start at the beginning of the year. They begun a gardening project which has been up and running since February. The picture inset shows the garden in its infancy, which has been thriving over the last number of weeks with weekly visits by the befriending team. The team also had a week long art exhibition in Sophia housing and had trips to the IFI, Dublinia Christchurch and the wax museum. A visit to Collins barracks and the lighthouse cinema has also been planned in the next couple of weeks. Tom Nolan and Alan Fitzpatrick's Art and Poetry exhibition Page 3
