DEPAUL IRELAND VOLUNTEER PROGRAMME

DEPAUL IRELAND BELIEVES THAT IT CANNOT ACHIEVE ITS MISSION WITHOUT THE ACTIVE INVOLVEMENT OF THE WIDER COMMUNITY AND IS STRIVING TO INCREASE VOLUNTEER INVOLVEMENT IN ITS WORK VOLUNTEERING WITH DEPAUL IRELAND

WHAT CAN WE OFFER YOU?

In all of our Depaul Ireland hostels we try to create a safe, caring environment for the people living there, no matter how temporarily. We see volunteers as integral in making residents feel at home, feel supported and listened to and in bringing a sense of community to our projects.

We would hope that as a volunteer you would be happy to work as a member of our very dedicated teams. In some of our hostels residents have mental health problems or drug and alcohol dependency so before choosing to volunteer we would like you to give careful consideration to whether you are comfortable with this type of voluntary work. We have no doubt that the experience of volunteering will be a very rewarding one. Please consider a minimum commitment of 12 months as we feel that you will need this time to truly settle in to your project.

Our volunteer recruitment process in intensive and includes an information session and group interview, selection, general induction and induction into the allocated project. The recruitment rounds generally take place in each season.

VOLUNTEER ROLES A volunteer’s role within the project can vary enormously and is dependent on their specific interests and abilities. Below are just some of the roles that we are recruiting for but if you feel that you have other skills or abilities that the projects may benefit from, just let us know. DEPAUL IRELAND VOLUNTEER PROGRAMME ROLE: MUSICIANS TO ENCOURAGE SING-ALONGS LOCATION: BACK LANE, ORCHID HOUSE & SUNDIAL HOUSE OUTLINE OF ROLE ROTA REQUIREMENTS We are looking for Musicians who will bring joy and energy into the lives of our residents by playing any kind of music for and with them.

Evenings and / or Weekends

SKILL REQUIREMENTS

We would like to provide music sessions in our projects, in the evenings or weekends. If you have a guitar or any other instrument you would be most welcome to come and ‘jam’ with us!

Ability to encourage a sing a longs. Owns and plays a musical instrument Knowledge of trad / 60’s / 70’s / 80’s music.

ROLE: WOMEN’S MINI MARATHON SUPPORT WALKERS NEW ROLE LOCATION: TUS NUA OUTLINE OF ROLE Tus Nua are looking for reliable female volunteers to support a number of our residents who wish to run in the Women’s Mini Marathon. Volunteers will be required to walk with the residents each week in the run up to the Marathon itself to provide motivation and praise.

ROLE: HANDYMAN / HANDYWOMAN LOCATION: CLANCY NIGHT SHELTER OUTLINE OF ROLE

In an older building such as Clancy Night Shelter we are looking for a handyman / handywoman to do minor repairs, painting, tiling, fixing minor electrical items, fixing press hinges, small plastering etc.

As required but probably 2-3 hours per week initially and then as needed. 1 year commitment

We are looking for a Hairdresser/ Barber in order to be able to pamper our residents occasionally!

ROLE: HAIRDRESSERS / BARBERS Experience of Hairdressing

ROLE: GARDENERS LOCATION: BACK LANE AND TUS NUA OUTLINE OF ROLE A volunteer with ‘green fingers’ is required to make the gardens at our projects a welcoming and calming environment for our residents to live in. We are looking for someone with a general interest in gardening to bring to life the gardens at both of these projects and we are happy to experiment! It would be an added bonus if the volunteer would be interested in encouraging and motivating the residents to assist in a gardening project.

Suggestion of 3 hours per week

Interest / experience in gardening Interest / experience in fruit / vegetable gardening.

DEPAUL IRELAND VOLUNTEER PROGRAMME ROLE: WELCOMERS FOR WEEKDAYS LOCATION: BACK LANE OUTLINE OF ROLE As above but for weekday evenings. This role would be mainly based at reception.

ROLE: WELCOMERS FOR WEEKENDS LOCATION: BACK LANE HOSTEL Outline of Role Back Lane hostel requires warm and friendly individuals to operate the reception of Back Lane Hostel for residents at the weekends. Volunteers would be required to welcome residents into the hostel, answer the telephone, update bed lists, add to case notes, deal with resident enquiries and generally assist in some basic admin duties.

After an initial settling in period at the project as a welcomer, volunteers will have had the opportunity to befriend residents and will therefore be able to take part in social activities with them, such as pool cards, social outings etc.

ROLE: ACTIVITIES ASSISTANT LOCATION: ORCHID HOUSE AND SUNDIAL HOUSE OUTLINE OF ROLE ROTA REQUIREMENTS

Volunteers are required to bring a personal and human aspect to the residents of Orchid House and Sundial House

Anytime, but particularly weekend day or evenings. 1 year commitment

Volunteers would work in the project engaging with the residents, having a chat over tea, play cards, and board games, organise quizzes or bingo and accompany residents on external trips/ meetings if necessary. Volunteers would also be on hand to assist project workers in the smooth operation of the hostel.

ROLE: VOLUNTEER SUPPORT WORKERS LOCATION: TUS NUA OUTLINE OF ROLE Tus Nua are looking for female volunteers to support the work of the staff team. Volunteers are required to befriend service users, to accompany people to appointments in the morning, to develop relationships with women with a view to supporting the women in the process of moving on from the service. Volunteers with skills in the areas of cooking/ bakery, parenting, alternative therapies, beauty therapy, other independent

Volunteers are needed for three hours between 4.30pm and 10.30pm every night and particularly at weekends. 6 month commitment, 2 days per week.

Volunteers are required to develop a relationship with residents of Orchid House who have been identified as needing additional one to one support.

Weekdays, preferably mornings. 1 year commitment

Volunteers are required to bring their culinary interest to the homeless of Dublin! Volunteers are required to assist in the preparation and serving of meals at this night shelter and to bring a homely and welcoming atmosphere to the project.

ROLE: BEFRIENDERS

Volunteers will be linked in with a particular service user in order to develop a relationship with them and encourage them to access activities during the day, such as going for coffee, going for a walk, attending appointments with service users etc.

Volunteers will work closely with key workers and will be given additional training to deal with lone working and boundary issues.

ROLE: ART & CRAFT FACILITATORS LOCATION: ALL PROJECTS OUTLINE OF ROLE All our projects are looking for volunteers to work with residents on creative projects. We are looking for volunteers to engage residents in activities such as art, drawing, mosaics, painting, pottery, jewellery making etc. for a couple of hours each week.

ROLE: TECH SAVVY TEAM PROJECT: MORE THAN CHANGE OUTLINE OF ROLE Do you have skills in the area of IT, communications, Social Media, Web 2.0, blogging, film, and/or graphic design? We’re looking to build a creative team of people who can together focus on… - Building online presence as well as organizational, staff, volunteer capacity to interact with the systems - Buzz building i.e. content generation, researching options and developing opportunities for advertising & awareness raising online - Engaging & pitching ideas to people in creative industry/media

DEPAUL IRELAND VOLUNTEER PROGRAMME ROLE: COMMUNITY AMBASSADOR LOCATION: CENTRAL OFFICE / LOCAL COMMUNITY OUTLINE OF ROLE ROTA REQUIREMENTS We would like to build up a team of community ambassadors who will represent the work and raise profile of Depaul Ireland in their local community. Training and support will be provided in order to:

Minimum commitment of 1 year

Identify potential community groups who would both benefit from learning about the work of Depaul Ireland and who might potentially act as fundraising liaisons Establish and maintain, on behalf of Depaul Ireland, good relationships with local community groups Provide information on the work of Depaul Ireland to the local community groups i.e. speaking at meetings / gatherings / events, liaise with Depaul Ireland staff to create media coverage Initiate fundraising activities/events through established links with community groups Act as coordinator of events organised in conjunction with community groups

Comfortable and confident with public speaking Ability to convey the work of Depaul Ireland in a sensitive and thoughtful manner Organised and efficient, Willingness to liaise with local community Experience in creative methods of engaging with people
