MASTER OF LAWS PROGRAMS

DePaul College of Law offers Master of Laws (LLM) programs in Health Law, Intellectual Property Law & Information Technology, International Law and U.S. Legal Studies. Our programs are designed to provide U.S. lawyers and law graduates with expanded knowledge and training, and to provide foreign-trained lawyers and graduates of nonU.S. law schools with an introduction to the U.S. legal system. You may complete an LLM program through an intensive, one-year course of full-time study or on a part-time basis.

LLM PROGRAMS
HEALTH LAW
DePaul College of Law’s health law program has been a leader in the education of future generations of health law partners, policy makers and critical thinkers since its inception in 1984. The program offers students opportunities to participate in community and business related programming, as well as groundbreaking research and policy reform. Guided by outstanding full-time faculty and leading health law attorneys, the curriculum evolves as the field of health care law changes.
INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY LAW & INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
The College of Law’s intellectual property law and information technology (IP/IT) program has stood at the forefront of IP/IT legal education since its inception over 25 years ago. The program’s unique interdisciplinary learning experience combines one of the most diverse and cutting-edge IP/IT curricula in the country with innovative scholarship and research, outstanding career development opportunities and mentoring, and an unparalleled range of extracurricular opportunities. This comprehensive approach prepares LLM students for the ever-changing needs of law, business and technology.
INTERNATIONAL LAW
The LLM in International Law emphasizes the theoretical background and practical skills that lawyers need to excel in international law practice. The program is designed for both experienced attorneys and recent law school graduates who wish to earn an advanced degree in one of the following concentrations:
– International Business, Commercial & Trade Law
– International Governance & Rule of Law
– International Human Rights Law & Policy and Criminal Justice
U.S. LEGAL STUDIES
The LLM in U.S. Legal Studies is designed for those who received their first degree in law outside the United States. Students participate in special courses introducing them to the differences between civil and common law systems, the foundations of the U.S. legal system, legal reasoning and analysis, and the basics of U.S. legal writing. Additionally, the program may provide students with the opportunity to sit for the bar exam in New York or Wisconsin. Students are responsible for ensuring that any jurisdictions they apply to will recognize them as bar eligible.
Degree Requirements
– Students must complete 24 credit hours of coursework at the College of Law within the approved LLM curriculum.
– LLM candidates must earn a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale.
Program Features
– Students may complete the program through either an intensive, one-year course of full-time study or a more flexible, part-time schedule.
– Students can choose from courses offered in the day or evening to provide flexibility in scheduling around professional and personal demands.

ADMISSION
Prospective students must have received a primary law degree from an accredited U.S. law school or a foreign law school, or will have received such a degree prior to matriculation.
WHEN TO APPLY
Early application is recommended. DePaul College of Law has a rolling admissions process and reviews applications as soon as they are completed. Applicants should submit all required materials by the deadline for the term for which they wish to apply.
Fall Semester (begins in August): July 1
Spring Semester (begins in January): November 1
HOW TO APPLY
Applicants should submit the following materials in order to be considered for admission:
– Completed application
– $40 application fee
– Personal statement
– Résumé
– Two letters of recommendation – Official law school transcript
Applicants who have earned primary law degrees from international institutions also should submit
– TOEFL/IELTS/DET score (minimum 90 on the iBT, 577 on the PBT, 6.5 on the IELTS or 115 on the Duolingo English Test).
– Evaluated law school transcript. Transcripts may be evaluated by LSAC, CAS, WES, ECE or from another organization approved by the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES).
CONDITIONAL ADMISSION FOR INTERNATIONAL LAW GRADUATES
DePaul College of Law offers conditional admission for students who otherwise have a strong overall academic record, but do not meet the minimum English language proficiency.
To apply for conditional admission, a student must present one of the following scores:
– 60-89 on the iBT TOEFL test
– 500-576 on the paper-based TOEFL test
– 6.0 on the IELTS test
- 95 on the Duolingo English Test
If granted conditional admission, an applicant may enroll in DePaul’s English Language Academy (ELA).
To formally begin studies in the LLM program, an applicant who has been conditionally admitted must either successfully complete ELA’s University Bridge Certificate or otherwise demonstrate the necessary English language proficiency (90 on the iBT, 577 on the PBT, 115 on the Duolingo English Test or 6.5 on the IELTS).
