BFP, PNP, Religious Sectors, Stakeholders Ink Agreement with POB
To support the implementation of the K to 12 Basic Education Program, the Department of Education (DepEd) continuously fulfill its mandate to produce productive and responsible citizens equipped with essential competencies and skills for lifelong learning. To make every learner a proficient reader, schools across the country are tasked to help learners develop their reading skills.
Hence, the City of Batac National High School Poblacion embraced the challenge to support the DepEd’s program.
As it intensifies the success of the Reading Program for this school year 2022-2023, the proponents with the full support of the school head and teachers continue to roll out the program, this time by setting-up reading nooks, reading corners, and additional community reading centers with the title “READSTRUCK 3.0 READY TO ENGAGE IN ADVANCEMENT AND DEVELOPMENT IN SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY (READS-C).”
This program benefits the identified learners with reading difficulties (LRDs) by helping

Dear Editor-in-Chief,
Greetings! With due respect to our school newspaper, I seek to bring to your attention the growing mental health issues faced by some learners of the City of Batac National High School Poblacion. I’ve heard several students complain about the excessive amount of homework that has been assigned to them. In some cases, students complain about the “deadline” rather than the “excessive homework.”
For example, today is Monday and teachers give homework to their students, they want them to submit it the following day. Isn’t this exhausting to the mental health of every learner? Shouldn’t we also consider their mental well-being whenever they’re loaded with homework? The more homework there is and the closer the deadline, the more difficult it is for students to accomplish it. Even on weekends, instead of spending time with their families or doing things they enjoy, students are locked in their rooms doing tons of homework, causing their social lives to dwindle. Students, with respect to their rights, deserve a break as well! According to reports, students are prone to suicidal thoughts, and their mental health issues are only triggering them to do something they shouldn’t.
With this, I propose that students be given less homework or that deadlines be extended to allow them to cope and complete their tasks with less pressure. We all deserve a break—a break that will allow us to clear our minds of any stressful thoughts!
Yours truly, About-to-Breakdown Student
Dear About-to-Breakdown Student,
Thank you for taking the time to reach out to me regarding the issue of excessive homework given to students. I also have noticed that this topic is a frequent talk around the school. I believe that students have different capabilities when it comes to answering activities, although we shouldn’t disregard that giving homework to students should be put into a stop. Giving excessive homework can be a big help to students when managed well.
Some agree that students need permission to take a break. If the school focuses on giving more activities in class and less homework, then it can be an alternative solution to the students who are struggling. Teachers will also have more time to supervise the students since you never know if they are answering honestly at home.
Although, we can still consider how excessive homework has its benefits. Excessive homework will help students develop study habits and be more responsible. Moreover, homework teaches you how to manage your time well. This habit can be proved useful once entering senior high school and college. This issue needs to be addressed but let us also try taking action starting with ourselves. We should think of alternatives or ways to solve it using critical thinking. For an instance, proper time management and taking breaks when feeling stressed. Giving excessive homework can be a big help to students when managed well and when it is not seen as a chore. Teachers of CBNHS Pob understand the situation of students which is why we should not feel dishearten.
Thank you once again for taking the effort in sending me this letter. This issue is very significant in today’s generation. Facing this as a challenge and finding different ways to approach it may be helpful. Nonetheless, let us also not forget to take breaks sometimes.
Yours Truly, Editor-in-Chief
Mask as Must: Why or Why Not?
When face masks became mandatory to wear, it felt like a daily routine since a day never felt complete without wearing one. Although, when the coronavirus disease started reducing and the people are settling down, it was finally the time for President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to announce the voluntary wearing of face mask throughout the Philippines. Several students of CBNHS Poblacion started to not wear masks. However, it can’t be helped that a few still dislike the idea of roaming around campus mask free. Is there a reason behind wearing your face mask or not?
In some cases, students felt cramped when they were around others who voluntarily stopped wearing masks. It could be the fear of getting sick or insecurity because it is so difficult to blend in. Situations like these show that there is no need to force someone to remove or wear a mask just for the sake of others and not yourself. We have the freedom to do what makes us comfortable. There is no need in finding a reason to wear your mask even if you have the right to stop. Nevertheless, the essence of signing the act of voluntary wearing of face mask is to not abandon safety protocols but to always keep in mind. Never let the enjoyment of bringing back the days before pandemic slip your mind that the coronavirus is still out there waiting for its next target especially since chances the chances of new variants are not yet zero. Why are you still wearing your mask? Is there a necessity in asking this question? Being safe is always encouraged and that should never be forgotten. To grant a wish of not having trouble breathing sounds like a bliss. Even so, do not get carried away that behind the particles you breathe, a certain disease can still be in there. There is nothing wrong with feeling comfortable, just remember to always stay alert and be safe against COVID-19 and other sicknesses.
a. gaoat zaM e. caBrera ContributorsAre You Ready? Face to Face Classes Are Back
Cases of the coronavirus disease are finally dropping which paved a way for DepEd Secretary and Vice President of the Philippines Sara Duterte to announce the transition of the full implementation of face-toface classes by November 2, 2022. The pandemic caused students to go through new methods of learning such as online and modular and blended modes of learning. Many concerns and struggles rose from these modes of learning that caught the public’s attention. Will this issue of full implementation of face-to-face classes finally bring back the good quality of education? When the day finally arrives, will everyone, including the Philippines be ready or not?
Many consider education as the foundation for them to achieve a bright future, especially CBNHS Poblacion students. However, distractions like noises from your neighborhood,
by Frances Lorine M. Pascuaonline games, social media, and searching on google for answers are just a few of their distractions and lose focus, a reason why face-to-face classes must be brought back. Students are losing their motivation to learn, which means the quality of education in the Philippines will decrease.
Preferably, the method of self-studying at home and classroom learning has its advantages. Considering that other students don’t like working with their peers, the implementation of face-to-face classes might be dismaying. However, group works have its contributions. The affected filter will go down and peer teaching is also effective in classroom learning.
Furthermore, the pandemic is still not over and parents are worried about the risks of their child getting the coronavirus in school. The truth is that fear will always be there, there is
nothing wrong with parents considering their child’s safety. Parents are pressured to think that face-to-face classes are still dangerous. But again, established health protocols are there and being strictly observed to maintain the student’s safety and health, reassurance will also increase due to the supervision of the school administration and staff of CBNHS Poblacion to our students. The feeling must be surreal after all the years of learning at home instead of school. This transition is a great opportunity that DepEd wants to give to students to finally acquire the opportunity to learn and engage better with others. The more reason why we should give all our support and cooperation to the department and our children for the full implementation of face-to-face classes. It’s time to give our children the education they deserve, a better quality of education.
The MIF Dilemma
by Jaylord RamosThe Maharlika Investment Fund (MIF) or also known as the Sovereign Wealth Fund was approved last December by the House of Representatives which received solid support of 90%, specifically, 282 out of the 312 members of the chamber according to the Press and Public Affairs Bureau.
The Philippines is still recovering from the effects of Covid-19. Therefore, it is not avoidable to have the idea that the MIF might not be the best solution for economic recovery. Nevertheless, if this bill will show success in the future then it can finally address the infrastructure problem in the country and promote economic growth in the Philippines.
As of now, the Senators are currently examining the MIF, will this be the solution that the Filipinos need to rise up again and prosper like other countries?

The Murder of Jullebee Ranara
by Frances Lorine M. PascuaAn overseas Filipino worker (OFW) named Jullebee Ranara who worked as a kasambahay or domestic helper was unfortunately found dead in a desert in Kuwait. The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) stated that the burnt remains of Ranara were found on January 21.
Out of the many OFWs who just wanted a better life had experience abuse, even worse death. In our society, inequality and discrimination is still heavy issue that affects even the victims’ families.
What happened to Ranara sent disturbance to our nation and many people expressed their opinions on different online platforms. This crime portrays how brutal it can be to work abroad, especially in an environment where you do not feel welcomed or accepted.
The Department of Migrant Workers and other government officials already took action to bring back the justice Ranara deserves. The police had already arrested the suspect. A “No Deployment Ban” in Kuwait was called by law-
makers and individuals according to the Manila Bulletin on behalf of Ranara and her family. According to Vice World News, ever since 2018, there have been at least four cases of murdered Kuwait-based Filipino migrant workers that have made national headlines, for almost two years. Justice for one is justice for all. OFW rights need more attention. Especially in the Philippines where salaries are not always sufficient, workers have no choice but to work abroad. Not only in Kuwait but in other countries too, abusing fellow Filipinos. This is a sign to fight for our justice, to help our kababayan, and to protect our rights as humans. Ranara deserves the justice her family wants. The Philippines should improve its economy and create more jobs so that Filipinos will have more options instead of migrating to another country. If the abuse continues, how will the loved ones of OFWs carry the guilt because they weren’t fortunate to live a rich life?
ON THE MANDATORY IMPLEMENTATION OF ROTC
by Frances Lorine M. Pascuaeign wealth fund will help President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. keep the country on the high-growth path. We want to assure the public that the management of the fund will follow best practices and the principles of transparency and accountability” said the principal author of the bill, House Speaker Martin G. Romualdez. For this bill to succeed, it requires a lot of strategic planning and importantly, the people handling this bill should be well educated and not corrupt.
In addition, the neighboring country India established a sovereign wealth fund in the year 2021 with a similar goal which is to promote infrastructure investment. The Philippines is also experiencing issues in infrastructure but the amount of money that will be invested makes it sound like a gamble. There will always be the possibility that this bill will attract corruption and politicians might make use of the resources that are isolated from
the goal or objective of the bill.
Just like your favorite book, the author had to put themselves in the shoes of the reader to judge their work and have a better perspective to identify what is lacking or missing. If the proponents of the Maharlika Investment Fund are looking at the money and private gain and not as solutions, then how can this bill be the solution Filipinos hope for? Instead of a solution, it will be another problem adding up to another.
If they want success, the Maharlika Investment Fund will always depend on who will be managing. As they push this bill, we can explore in our own ways if this is the solution to address the infrastructure and promote economic growth in the Philippines. We all have different opinions but in the end, the prosperity of our country is in the hands of the government leaders.
One of the controversial issues that caught the attention of many is the mandatory implementation of the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) in the tertiary level known for its military training to promote patriotism and preparedness to college students. As of the moment, the program is a part of the National Service Training Program (NSTP), however in a voluntary basis. In fact, on the month of December 2022, a joint House panel approved a bill that would turn National Citizens Service Training Program (NCSTP) mandatory to college students while ROTC is altered as an option. While serving the country is something our Filipino heroes were known during the early days, will the decision of the higher ups regarding this issue be regretful or unrepentant?
Many dislike the idea of mandatory ROTC because it can cause distractions, affects health, and is believed to be unnecessary. Youth and socio-civic groups brought up the negativities happened during its implementation in the past years. There were violations of students’ rights which caused physical and mental changes.
Vice President Sara Duterte said that ROTC is a chance to serve our country. Yet, others argue that ROTC is not the only way to show patriotism. Moreover, not all students are fit to take part in the ROTC. Students who have health issues may be triggered due to the excessive physical activities of the program such as jungle survival skills and self-defense. The learned skills in ROTC such as shooting and handling dangerous weapon can also be taken advantaged in a bad way.
Nonetheless, helpful and convenient skills can be acquired through participation in ROTC. At times of calamities and emergencies that require leadership skills, students can be prepared.
At the end of the day, you can never force someone to do something they do not want. The chosen journey a student picks should not be taken away. The decision of mandatory implementing ROTC may be favorable to others, yet others believe that making it optional is also highlighted. May we be reminded that even our national hero, Jose Rizal, did not fight for our freedom through physical strength but through his mighty pen. This shows that ROTC is not the only way to show patriotism.
So What?
by Cathen L. Fontanilla“You’re too fat.” “You’re too dull.” “You’re too skinny.” People are really that harsh, aren’t they? Look at yourself first, humans. Then look at everybody else. See? We are all the same.
I find it ironic to see how people can look at someone and say, “they’re too fat,” or “They’re too skinny.” Hey! At the end of the day, we’ll all die as useless specks of dust in the wind. What is the use of shaming if we’ll all end up the same way?
This might not be an entirely good mindset, but it inspires us to think that we are all humans, and everyone is accepted. But how can people accept us, when we do not even accept ourselves? Love yourself first, before loving anyone else.
People can be insecure about how they look; this cannot be avoided. This is due to the beauty standards of society that are becoming more and more toxic over time. Being ashamed of who we are is the only consequence of this. Body shaming can cause people to hide their true selves. So, having a healthy mind-

Body positivity is something that not everyone has. But I assure you, having body positivity will change the way you look at yourself and others. It makes us accept ourselves for who we are, no matter what shape or size. Which is why I encourage you to be positive about your own body.

Mathematics is indeed everywhere. It is an easy subject when taught by skilled educators. It only becomes hard when it is not explained precisely.
Here in CBNHS Poblacion, Mathematics is made easy through a special program called “Mathuto.” Last school year 2021-2022, Mathuto was first established for struggling students to have a better understanding in Math through tutorials guided by the Math teachers of Poblacion, enhancing their numeracy skills that have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
It is a well-known fact that some people find Mathematics to be complicated, obscure, or even boring. Some even say that Math stands for: ‘Mental Abuse To Humans’. It is a paradigm in which so many students believe.
As a dedicated student who finds Math to be full of enigmas yet fascinating, I can say otherwise. Because I believe that Mathematics is the poetry of logical ideas. It is not
byCathenL.Fontanilllamerely a difficult subject; it teaches us the basics of life.
Katherine Johnson once said, “We will always have STEM with us. Some things will drop out of the public eye and will go away, but there will always be science, engineering, and technology. And there will always, always be mathematics.” This alone speaks for the importance of Math.
This is the sole purpose of Mathuto; to make students not lose confidence and belief in themselves. Inside the four walls of our classroom, I’ve observed that some easily give up and say Math is hard without even trying. Mathuto encourages students to have a better mindset when it comes to this subject. Mathematics is not about numbers, equations, computations, or algorithms: it is about understanding.
This program provides numeracy skills tutorials and is open to all students, from grades seven to ten. The ever reliable and efficient Math teachers of Poblacion join forces to attain their objectives. They make sure that every learner realizes the essence of Math.
To my fellows, like what Mathuto is teaching us students, Math is not a subject to be afraid of. It is a subject like the Nile; it begins in insignificance but ends in magnificence. It can be truly amazing when we have patience and passion.
So, do not believe Math is not simple, it is only life that’s complicated.
by Cathen L. FontanillaThis song brings me back to my elementary days, when I didn’t question and ponder about youth that much. I simply didn’t bother and just went with life’s
flow. It was the school’s Recognition Day in 2018 and I could only stare at those first-grade pupils as they sang and swayed along this Michael Jackson classic for their class performance. The melodious tunes harmonized flawlessly with
their sweet unripe voices. I saw life at its most vibrant, and I thought to myself, nothing in this world could seem to beat this brightness glowing inside them. A brightness that is unbreakable. Back then, I didn’t think about it that deeply. I was unaware; it was not surprising. Now, I sigh, not in relief, but in utter pain and disappointment, as my thoughts fall on the constantly degrading society has on youth. Look around you. Everywhere and every corner you go, there is always youth. Here in our country, twenty-eight percent of our population is composed of the youth. Indeed, youth plays an important role in shaping society today and tomorrow. As a young person myself, I do not doubt that we have the capability to shape the future generations. We carry on our backs a heavy responsibility yet here we are, continuing to thrive and survive.
Though, I said that youth is the future, I see today what a shame, youth is wasted on the young. I saw in the eyes of those first-grade pupils, what youth need the most today—hope. Hope for the young and hope for everyone.
Someone asked Bernand Shaw what, in his opinion, is the most beautiful thing in this world. “Youth,” he replied, “is the most beautiful thing in this world— and what a pity that it has to be wasted on children!”
I wondered and wondered. I could not seem to comprehend his statement. At first glance, ‘youth’ and ‘young’ have the same meaning. There’s something I just couldn’t grasp.
Aha! Finally, I understand. Youth is wasted on children who are unaware of the power they possess. Youth is wasted on the uneducated young. The real tragedy of this world is the wasted youth, until it becomes a dull, drudg-
ing, fat pig. So, wake up, people! What do we ought to do?
Wake up! We should be empowering the young for them to become the youth that this world so desperately yearns for. Help us develop knowledge. Help us with our education. Help us teach ourselves to be better. Help us make this world a better place. Help us, the young become youth, for you say that we are the future. So, empower us. Please don’t see just a speck of dust within the galaxy. Please don’t see just a girl caught up in dreams and fantasies. Please see me reaching out for someone I can’t see.
So, take my hand, let’s see where we wake up tomorrow. At last, I could not stop smiling as I witnessed the wide smiles pasted on their innocent faces, promising us that the youth will not be wasted on the young.
Youth is indeed beautiful.
A Promising Future
“Only the young can run.” Taylor Alison Swift, an American singer-songwriter mentioned in her song, Only The Young. Truly, the youth is the future of every generation. With their overflowing dreams and visions for everyone’s welfare, it is evident that every child will have ‘A Promising Future’.
In terms of education, reading is a basic skill that should be possessed by everyone. At a very young age, individuals should be capable enough to read and write as a starter in making their own paddles on a river towards their dreams.
But due to the pandemic, a huge number of children have been stripped off the opportunity to begin with, as if they have been robbed by a thief along the road to suc cess towards their ambitions.
by Christen Chloe B. Fonsecapast generations, the youth have not taken initiative to help shape the future generations. When the children expressed their silent and agonizing cries, The City of Batac National High School Poblacion acted to expunge their tears dry. Led by the Language Department, they conducted a project wherein they could expand and alleviate these struggling readers’ knowledge by teaching them how to read and why read.
Thus, the Reading Program of CBNHS Poblacion - Readstruck 3.0 Harnessing and Engaging Learners’ Productivity (HELP) in Reading is created to cater the needs of the learners with reading difficulties.
The main purpose of this project is to develop the potential of all students to become better and comprehenreaders.

‘POWERFUL QUOTE about INCLUSIVITY’
‘Inclusion is not bringing people into what already exists; it is making a new and better space for everyone.’
These words of Sir George Dei beautifully embody the philosophy behind the Department of Education’s belief system on Inclusive Education. It begins with the idea that every child has strengths to build upon, interests to share, and experiences to signify growth.
The City of Batac National High School Poblacion has always been a home of young Bataqueños with diverse attributes in terms of intelligence, skill, and even behavior. This makes it a melting pot of the different norms from the thirty-five Barangays of the city that comprise the 1,563 enrollees at the start of the current school year.
It is remarkable to note that the school offers different programs such as Special Science Curriculum, Special Programs in the Arts, and Regular classes. What makes it more remarkable and special is the establishment of the Non-Graded Program that caters to learners with disabilities in the K to 12 Basic Education Program.
As one with the Department of Education’s
by Jaylord Ramosstrong advocacy of inclusivity, the CBNHS Poblacion established the Non-Graded Program in March 2022 after the directive of Dr. Joel Lopez, who was the Superintendent at that time. Mrs. Gina G. Lacambra, one of the advisers of the Non-graded learners claimed that on the third quarter of SY 20212022, she had noticed that six of her students could hardly comprehend and identify letters. So, she began teaching them how to read. Coincidentally, on that same school year, Dr. Aubrey R. Oasay, the Division Education Program Supervisor in Learning Resource Management System of the City Schools Division of Batac, conducted a meeting with all the Special Education teachers and informed them that they could now create a non-graded class in the secondary level anchored on the law that mandates to implement programs, services, and interventions to learners with disability from ages 14-24 years old.
This program primarily aims to provide a curriculum with fitting activities for learners with some forms of disability, whether cognitive, behavioral, or physical, that would enhance their competencies in ways that they would feel included and not left behind and ignored. This opens an

opportunity for the 31 special learners (three from Paoay, one from San Nicolas, two from Currimao, and 25 from Batac) who are currently enrolled under the program to showcase their special skills and enhance their basic competency in reading, writing and counting which are the fundamental skills that one learner should possess.
In the CBNHS Poblacion, the 30 special souls from this program have been an apple to the eyes of the community. The school takes pride in their participation in the different activities such as the recently conducted National Women’s Month last March 27, 2023 where they showcased their skills in Arts, during the celebration of National Women with Disability Day. They also joined the walk for a cause, sketching and coloring of faces of women. They were also encouraged to join the earthquake and fire drills of the school. These were done to improve their coordination in motor skill, to enhance their mental ability and to make them appreciate belongingness. These learners are currently attending to their classes in English, Science, Math, Life Skills, Care Skills, and Livelihood daily just like everyone else.

THE MODERN AGRICULTURE
Agriculture is the stronghold of the Philippine economy, mainly due to many Filipinos relying on agriculture as form of income and food. But it faces numerous obstacles that have an impact on farmers, including a lack of fully automated equipment, high input costs, and devastating natural disasters.
Unfortunately, because of these factors, agriculture does not seem to progress as expected. One reason is that most Filipino farmers are still not using farm machineries to make it more competitive. “We have yet to mechanize Philippine agriculture, at a level of at least four horsepower (hp) per hectare (ha), and be at par with our ASEAN counterparts” said William Dar when he was the secretary of the Department of Agriculture (DA). Nevertheless, the government with the help of Department of Agriculture already began promoting and encouraging the use of technology to farmers in hopes to pave the way for “Agricul-

Grass: A Lifesaving Resource
by Adrian V. QuibinGrass accounts to the millions of acres of maintained, irrigated natural grass across the world. Most people are unconscious about the properties and benefits of grass. Ongoing research continues to unveil its hidden environmental and health benefits.
Grass can be found on lawns, athletic fields, golf courses, parks, roadsides and many other natural and recreational areas. Through photosynthesis, each plant takes in carbon dioxide and converts it into simple sugars to use as food. As byproduct of photosynthesis, oxygen is released into the atmosphere. Thus, improving the air quality within the surroundings. A grass patch measuring 2,500 square feet can produce enough oxygen for a family of four. Due to this, Dr. Thomas Watschke of Penn State University stated that “the strategic use of grass is the most sensible and economically feasible approach to countering the

The fibrous root system stabilizes the soil in order to reduce erosion and prevent the movement of sediment into creeks and rivers. Additionally, studies have found the noise absorptive capability of grass is a significant part of how landscapes are effective in reducing noise pollution. Moreover, grass provides habitats and food for animals and microorganisms in which balances the ecosystem to keep it thriving.
In 2002, The University of California Riverside conducted a research to support that hospital stays are affected by grass and greenery. Employees with a view of grassed areas experience less job pressure, job satisfaction and fewer headaches than those who only see manmade objects.
African swine fever (ASF) is responsible for the wide loss of pigs inside the Philippines. Most Filipinos rely on hog raising as their way of income or food in order to survive on a daily basis. This did not only hampered the livestock industry but also the economy of the country.
Recently, the Guimaras province has logged their first case on Friday. As safety measures, the government of Guimaras immediately imposed a temporary ban on the entry and exit of swine, pork, pork products, and byproducts to and from Buenavista, according to DA Region VI. Moreover, the Department of Agriculture (DA)
had set additional standards for hog biosecurity facilities to help recover from continuous cases of ASF in the country. Although humans may not be affected by ASF. The virus can be carried by people, clothing, shoes, equipment and vehicles if exposed within an infected area, or even pork products. Herd isolation is achieved by maintaining adequate distances between farms for at least 500 to 1000 meters, fully fencing the herd, and installation of closed entrance to farm areas are some precautions and preventive measures, which reduces the risk of transmission from hogs. The carcasses of domestic pigs and boars after being slaughtered must
also be treated properly to avoid further transmission.
In the event of a positive ASF result, all the stored carcasses (or pieces of meat) must be safely disposed of by the veterinary service. The dressing area, cold storage facilities or refrigerator must also be cleaned and disinfected. Since the inactivation of the virus in the dressing area, in refrigerators and from clothes, vehicles and tools is based on cleaning and disinfection, people should be trained and provided with the written instructions. Preliminary cleansing is necessary before the use of any disinfectants.
HFMD Strikes Ilocos Norte
The Department of Health Center for Health Development (DOH-CHD)1(Ilocos region) has recorded 677 cases of hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) from January 1 to November 12 of this year, according to their latest data.
A rise in the number of cases of hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) was noted in the Ilocos region, with health officials attributing the increase to “clustering” of cases in daycare centers and elementary schools, according to the regional Department of Health (DOH) on Tuesday, Dec.13. Dr. Rheuel Bobis, regional DOH medical officer, told that their latest data showed 1,170 suspected HFMD cases had been identified in the region since January. Of these cases, at least 197 were “laboratory confirmed”, he said. “The region’s recent surveillance report showed the clustering of cas-
by Adrian V. Quibines in different daycare centers and elementary schools in at least 16 towns in Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, and Pangasinan. Most affected age groups are 1-4 and 5-9 years old”, Bobis added. Amid the rising num ber of cases, Bobis said the regional DOH has been focusing its surveillance on areas with clusters of cases to halt the spread of the disease. The DOH together with the Department of Education have been in “collaboration” to ensure that preventive actions are well placed in schools, such as functioning hand washing facilities, regular disinfection of classrooms, and advising pupils [exhibiting] symptoms to isolate.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), HFMD is a common infectious disease that occurs most often in children, but can also occur in adolescents and occa-

Outweighing Chess Consequences
For many years, chess is played competitively. Countless players rise up the top stage to challenge a well-respected player. In order to prepare for their games, they play thousands of chess openings, puzzles and their tactics. But does playing too much chess really improve our mental ability or can it lead to mental problems?
This board-game is good for learning new strategies, famous openings and identifying threats on the board. It also improves one’s brainpower. This plays a great role in our minds. Another important benefit of playing chess is that it improves the capability of our brains which leads to a healthy mind. However, there are many evidences that says otherwise.
Bobby Fisher, a chess player who won the U.S Championship at 14 and became the first American born player to win the Chess World Championship was a tactical genius in his time. Some say he was the best player in the world for that time. However, all that changed when he quit chess because of diagnosed with paranoia. This mental illness does not promote a healthy mind.
We can say that playing chess is a mental activity game but too much of it leads to stress and possibly mental issues. With the pros and cons of playing this sport, the real question now is, is playing chess worth it to play?

gripped their family’s generation. Alviar’s father was the one who prepared him to be a worthy chess player, he also worked extensively to improve Alviar’s skills and make him enjoy this hard and nerve-racking game.
It has not been easy for Alviar to participate in the city meet because he was only called at the last minute; he should not have been granted the opportunity to play in the elimination. However, even with a minute remaining, he gave his best and played the game calmly, but with a goal in mind, it is to win. After the intense elimination round, Alviar returned home with a bright smile, knowing that he had aced a game that he had almost missed.
“I devoted all of my knowledge to this game and was pleased of myself since this sort of event occurs just once in a lifetime. I am confident that I did my best, and I will eagerly await the next event.” Alviar said in an interview.
