DePelchin Children’s Center

SPRING 2015

A Second Chance, Thanks to DePelchin Last year, DePelchin Children’s Center opened a home for young adults, ages 18-22, who had aged out of foster care and were at risk of becoming homeless. In addition to offering youths a safe, stable living environment, DePelchin’s Transitioning to Adulthood through Guidance and Support (TAGS) program helps guides these young adults to becoming financially independent and self-sufficient. We sat down with one of the program residents, Marcos, for an insider look at how the TAGS program is helping him today. in August and work on my degree in Diesel Mechanics. The car though is my first priorityit’s going to make my life infinitely easier by providing a way to get to school. I have always wanted my own family, and I know this place will help me achieve that one day.

How did you get connected with the TAGS program? I have had the same CPS case worker since I was 14; and even though she may not have been my immediate case worker, we always kept in touch. I now refer to her as my “Auntie.” I grew up in foster care in the Austin area, but I moved back to Houston where I am from originally when I turned 19. I was staying with various friends for short periods of time, when Auntie told me about the TAGS program. That day, I decided I wanted to grow up and ask for help. I realized that if I was comfortable asking for help, I could set better goals for the future and end up with a better life.

Hi Marcos, tell us a little bit about yourself.

How is the program helping you today?

I moved into the TAGS residence in early November. I am currently working in food prep at My Fit Foods, which is close by on Memorial Drive so I am able to walk back and forth to work. I received MVP Employee in December along with being recognized for a raise and a promotion. I have a lot of responsibility, and I am really proud to do a good job.

The biggest thing I have learned is how to manage money. I have learned not only the importance of saving money for the future but how to put money into a savings account along with how to write and cash a check. Even though my current rent here is free, I have learned to set aside money every month like I am paying rent so that I can add to my savings. I have also learned a lot about safety. We have monthly fire drills and if you didn’t know to “Stop Drop and Roll,” you will after living here. I was lucky to have my GED but if you don’t, the program will help you achieve it or help you get started on your college degree.

What do you hope to get out of the TAGS program? I hope by living here and working, I will be able to save enough money to buy a car and afford my own apartment. I want to go back to school

“I have always wanted my own family, and I know this place will help me achieve that one day.”

What else does the program help you with?

In addition to help with budgeting, we are also given a METRO card each week for $20. Sometimes you have to go far distances from DePelchin for things like a doctor’s appointments or a job, so it is really helpful. I am given my own room with a bed, cabinet, fridge and bathroom. DePelchin also provides us with bedding, light bulbs, toilet paper and toiletries in addition to interview clothes if you need them. If I want, I can buy my own food and store it in my room or I can eat the food provided for everyone’s use. I’ve learned how to balance depending on myself and not depend on DePelchin for everything.

Are you friends with the other program residents? Yes! The first Wednesday of every month we get together to talk about what we need to work on and how we are working to meet our CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

From the President

S

pring has sprung here at DePelchin, and our organization is alive with activity. I am thrilled with the many new initiatives that have taken root this past year, including our on-campus program for youths aging out of foster care.

Called TAGS, Transitioning to Adulthood through Guidance and Support, this program, funded with a gift from United Way, offers a stable, living environment for young adults without families who are working hard towards financial independence and self-sufficiency. You can meet Marcos, one of our 15 residents, in this issue of Today as he shares his personal story and how the program has turned his life around. Another initiative that seems to grow larger each year is our annual Holiday Project. 13 days of Holiday Project brought smiles to the faces of 1,307 children whose holiday wishes were fulfilled. Almost 200 volunteers donated their time to sorting and wrapping gifts, and more than 300 individuals, foundations and corporations participated in sponsoring children! There are many ways you can be involved with DePelchin all year round. Read more about how to become a Birthday Buddy and how you can give a voice to the victims of child abuse during April’s child abuse prevention month. You can also support our organization by purchasing a ticket to our April 15 Families for Kids luncheon. At the end of the day, all of these activities are about one thing—turning lives around. This year, DePelchin and Caring Family Network had a record number of adoptions, creating forever families for 196 children, many of whom were just waiting for a mom and dad to call their own. I am so proud of this accomplishment, but there are still more children who need our help. We would not be able to do our good work without the support of friends like you. On behalf of our children, our families and the DePelchin staff, I thank you. Sincerely,

Jenifer Jarriel President and CEO

A SECOND CHANCE, THANKS TO DEPELCHIN CONTINUED

goals. It has been important to remember that Ms. Erin and Ms. Nancy (DePelchin staff) are here to help if you need them.

Where do you think you would be if you weren’t in the TAGS program? Honestly, I’d be living on the streets. I have friends and family, but I don’t want to overstay my welcome with them and don’t want to have to depend on others.

How do you feel at this point in your life? I have ambition, and I am hungry to do right. I am trying to stay positive and be a good role model to others. I look at my experiences in foster care and think of them positively because of the opportunities I was given. I always had a safe place to stay as well as food and clothing. Because of foster care,

“Honestly, I’d be living on the streets. I have friends and family, but I don’t want to overstay my welcome with them and don’t want to have to depend on others.”

Friday Night Lights Wins Big for DePelchin DePelchin Children’s Center scored another winning touchdown at NRG Stadium on Friday November 21, for the second annual “Friday Night Lights: Teaming up for Children’s Mental Health.” Event honorees, Houston Texans head coach, Bill O’Brien, and his wife, Colleen, alongside more than 500 guests of the sold-out event, enjoyed a night of football-themed fun, including competing in the big board and live auction and dancing with the Houston Texans Cheerleaders. With more than $300,000 raised to support DePelchin’s mental health, foster care and adoption services, event Co-Chairs Audrey and Brandon Cochran and Kathleen and James Jennings, in addition to Honorary Chairs Hannah and Cal McNair and Abbi and Rob Antablin, were thrilled with the evening’s success!

TIE A BLUE RIBBON AND HELP PREVENT CHILD ABUSE

L

ast year during Child Abuse Prevention Month, DePelchin asked the community to stand with the 5,929 victims of child abuse in Houston by tying 5,929 ribbons to its fence line along Memorial Drive. This year, DePelchin is issuing the same challenge: help us tie a blue ribbon in recognition of every child who cannot speak for themselves. Starting April 7, DePelchin will begin tying 5,901 blue ribbons along its fence line to give voice to the victims of child abuse in 2014. If you, your family or your organization would like to join us and tie blue ribbons throughout the month of April, please contact Analisa Warren, Manager of Public Relations, at awarren@depelchin.org.

Liam and Ryan submitted their wish lists to the Holiday Project last year, requesting twin beds for their room. Since the cost of the beds exceeded the cost limit of their wish lists, DePelchin reached out Rooms To Go to help make their holiday wishes come true. Thanks to the generosity of Rooms To Go, Liam and Ryan are now happily enjoying their new beds.

Texas-Sized Bowl Game Fun at DePelchin It was a record-breaking year for the AdvoCare V100 Texas Bowl with the University of Texas Longhorns taking on the University of Arkansas Razorbacks to a sellout crowd on December 29. DePelchin Children’s Center and Caring Family Network families had the opportunity to not only be part of the fun at NRG Stadium but to also meet the players a few days prior at DePelchin’s main campus. Players from the Longhorns and Razorbacks along with the cheerleaders and mascots provided some post-holiday fun for our families — teaching school chants, taking pictures and signing autographs.

“Thank you. Had a blast!” – THE BURNHAM FAMILY

“Awesome time!!! Thanks so much!!” – THE MACK FAMILY

Thanks to donated tickets from the Bowl Backer program, parents and children, many of whom had never been to NRG stadium, experienced a memorable evening of football fun!

“Thanks for giving us the tickets, the kids have gone on and on about the game today and how much fun they had.” – THE GALLAGHER FAMILY

THE LESTER FAMILY

“Thank you for helping make a dream come true. We are so thankful!” – ELYSE GONGORA

“Fun! Fun!” – CHRISTI FISHER
