INSIDE KALKHOFF
HISTORY
THE EARLY DAYS
THE 1950S AND 1960S
From postman to bike specialist. In 1919, the then 16-year-old rural postal worker Heinrich Kalkhoff founds the company we have come to know as Kalkhoff from his parents’ house in Cloppenburg. His idea is simple yet brilliant. Inspired by the many mechanical issues he has to contend with on his round, he soon realises there is a high demand for tyres and other bike parts. Business is good – so good that Kalkhoff even starts to produce entire bikes from 1927. The start of a new era.
THE 1970S
Bikes experience something of a renaissance due to the oil crisis and with people becoming more aware of environmental and health issues. Even Uschi Obermaier, the iconic figure from Germany's counterculture, can be seen riding a Kalkhoff. Cycling is cool, and the keep-fit craze sweeping society gives Kalkhoff another tremendous boost around this time – even after the death of founder Heinrich Kalkhoff on 25 September 1972. He leaves the company in good shape, and it continues to develop strongly in the next few years.
Following a short break during the Second World War, bike production picks up again in the 1950s. As cars are rare at the time, there is tremendous demand for transport on two wheels. These are golden years for the company: for a time, 1,200 people are employed at the factory, making up to 5,000 frames a day. Bikes are delivered to 32 different countries, with Kalkhoff's handiwork – made in Germany – even proving competitive in East Asia.

TRADITIONAL MEETS MODERN
2007 sees Kalkhoff’s first serial-production e-bike leave the factory. This provides further proof of the company’s ability to remain on trend. 2009 marks the 90th anniversary of the brand, with its rich tradition, while Derby Cycle continues to develop apace: Derby Cycle Holding GmbH is now the largest bike manufacturer in Germany in terms of sales. With the brands Kalkhoff, Focus, Raleigh, Univega and Cervélo, Derby Cycle sells almost half a million bikes a year – including over 100,000 e-bikes and pedelecs, making it the leader in this sector within Germany.
Kalkhoff celebrated its centenary in 2019. 100 years in which we have consistently helped to shape the evolution of the bicycle and the various eras of cycling. We are proud of our history - a history that is far from over. It is this blend of expertise with a strong sense of tradition and progressive innovation that will enable us to continue to be a driving force in the German bicycle industry in the future. This is reflected not least in our new 2021 anniversary collection. Welcome to the future of Kalkhoff.

TESTCENTRE We are especially proud of our in-house test centre. Kalkhoff has one of the most modern and largest test laboratories in Europe. Frames, forks, seat supports, wheels, brakes and other components are tested on 30 machines spread over 40 square metres - up to 2,000 parts a year. Three engineers constantly monitor developments. Our objective is to achieve the highest quality for the most stringent requirements. Where necessary, we therefore set the testing requirements higher than prescribed by the official standards. The result is a harmonious overall picture that more than deserves the label "Engineered in Germany".
WHEEL PRODUCTION
PRE-ASSEMBLY
In order to have an efficient manufacturing process, the pre-assembly is an important part of production. At individual workplaces, frames are straightened, handlebars pre-assembled and forks prepared for installation.

Ten conveyor belts, 170 employees involved in final assembly alone, one bike finished every three and a half minutes and up to 2,000 units a day. At its own factory in Cloppenburg, Kalkhoff develops and produces e-City, e-Urban, and e-Trekking bikes with the utmost care and attention.
The components for the wheels are coordinated intuitively and provided with matching colours and designs. In our in-house paintwork and decals department, we use our own high-quality powder coatings and wet paint, which are applied in several layers. For a particularly long-lasting brilliant finish.

RAINER, WHAT DOES PLUS MEAN AT KALKHOFF IN 2021?

In principle, the “PLUS” motto refers to models with a load capacity of up to 170 kilograms, which offer maximum stability, comfort and flexibility. The wheels are specially designed for tall riders, as well as for those who need maximum payload or towing capacity.

IN RECENT YEARS, A SIMILAR APPROACH HAS ALREADY BEEN TAKEN WITH THE XXL BIKES. SO WHAT’S DIFFERENT WITH THE NEW PLUS MODELS? XXL models are part of Kalkhoff’s DNA and we have been pioneers in this field for many years now. The PLUS category, however, takes this to a new level: the previous XXL models were always designed for a maximum weight of 170 kg. The parts were appropriately hard and rigid, which meant that traditional cyclists were excluded somewhat. With the new PLUS models, the set-up is now such that even lightweight riders can enjoy comfort, while at the same time making the most of all the benefits of a stable and powerful e-bike.
DOES THIS MEAN THAT THE BIKES CAN BE BETTER TAILORED TO DIFFERENT REQUIREMENTS? Exactly that. One example is the built-in air suspension fork, which can be adjusted to any rider weight depending on the air pressure used. It’s not just about the rider here; you can also adjust the bike for different purposes – for example depending on whether or not you’re towing a heavy trailer.
WHO IS THE TARGET GROUP FOR PLUS BIKES? Essentially all riders who are looking for a robust e-bike that can also cope with heavier loads. Sitting in traffic jams is a thing of the past; the future belongs to the bike. You only need to take a look at cities to see that these are not just empty words. Whether it’s Birmingham or London– more and more people are getting on their bikes. More and more often e-bikes and co. are proving to be the perfect alternative to the car.
E-BIKES INSTEAD OF THE CAR There are currently around 75.9 million bicycles in Germany (Source: The German Bike Association). For comparison: according to the Federal Motor Transport Authority, the number of registered passenger cars currently stands at 47.7 million vehicles. In the cities in particular, bikes have long since taken the lead. It’s no wonder: congested streets, no parking spaces – driving a car in the city is often associated with a high degree of stress. Commuters in particular are therefore increasingly turning to their bikes in urban terrain.
URBAN REVOLUTION In politics, too, the bike has long since featured as an alternative means of transport. More and more cities are working on modern mobility solutions in which cyclists play a significant role. It is not without reason that studies prove that the e-bike can be the fastest means of transport for distances of up to ten kilometres. And special cycling fast lanes modelled on those in cycling countries such as Denmark or the Netherlands, which are currently under construction throughout Germany, should make it even more attractive for commuters to get on their bikes.

CYCLING IS ON TREND A recently published survey by the YouGov market research institute shows the extent to which cycling is in vogue. The representative study showed that 18 per cent of consumers are using their bikes more often as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. The map service Google Maps even reports that requests for bike navigation have increased by 69 per cent since February. E-bikes will therefore play an even greater role in the traffic of the future than they have done so far. Kalkhoff is right at the centre of this urban revolution.
