Celebrating the area’s rich history of innovation, the Museum of Making in the Derwent Valley Mills UNESCO World Heritage Site is a contemporary space telling Derby’s 300-year history of making to inspire new creativity. Designed and made by the people and industries of Derby with exhibits, workshops, activities and events, there’s something here for everyone including a new café, shop and venue hire space. Here is a taster of some of the exhibitions and events we have coming up…

Their visually stunning art, science and engineering exhibitions have been seen by millions of people worldwide. CMT are delighted to bring 30 automata from their collection to the Museum of Making this winter. This interactive educational experience is perfect for children, families, school groups and adults. The automata are made by 12 contemporary artists, including Paul Spooner, Carlos Zapata, Wanda Sowry and Fi Henshall. Marvel at the ingenious mechanisms, get inspired to make your own automata, and learn more about this wonderful art form.

Join us for a terrific train extravaganza with lots to see and do for all. Find out about the fascinating history of the railways in the Railway Study Centre and from exhibiting guest railway organisations. Discover how model railways are made and have a go at some making activities. For younger visitors, there will be a railway-themed STEAM Tots and family trail to get your little ones all puffed out. Finally, meet the Lost Luggage Porters from Curious Cargo Street Theatre, as they try to find the railway station. Drop in event, suitable for all.

This LGBT+ History Month Derby Museums presents a series of talks, workshops and performance-based events on the theme of ‘Politics in Art’, including an evening of new queer writing as part of First Fridays, the return of LGB-Qwerty, Derby’s only LGBT+ spoken word and variety event, and OUTing the Past Festival on 5th February. Suitable for adults and young people.
