City Development Plan Would Focus On River

THE TOUR OF BRITAIN DERBYSHIRE STAGE THE TOUGHEST OF RACE

Derbyshire returned to the Tour of Britain schedule for the first time since 2012, as Stage 6 took the riders from Stoke to Nottingham. Much of the stage was in Derbyshire and it proved to be the toughest stage of the week-long event. The Tour kicked off in Wales

before heading north including two days in Scotland. Team Sky won Stages 1 and 3 with Elia Viviani and Stage 5 with Wout Poels, while Petr Vakoc and Fernando Gaviria had taken Stages 2 and 4 for Etixx-Quick Step. As the riders gathered in Stoke for the start of stage 6, Norwegian rider Edvald Boasson Hagen (MTN) led Dutchman Poels by just 1 second after 23 hours of riding. After third place in stages 2 and 4, Boasson Hagen looked like winning stage 5, on Hartside Fell, only to be caught by Poels on the run-in. Ahead

lay a daunting 192,7km (119.7 miles) mainly Derbyshire hills and towns, before a finish at Forest Recreation Ground in Nottingham. By the time the riders reached Derbyshire Mark Cavendish (Etixx-Quick Step) was on his way to hospital, having colliding with the wing mirror of a parked car. Fortunately no bones were broken, but he was expected to rest for a few days ahead of the World Championships. As the race continued the field was split on the series of climbs through the first hour. Boasson Hagen took the first

sprint of the day, in Buxton, from Owain Doull (Wiggins) and Poels third, while Sky’s Ian Stannard took the first King of the Mountains stage at Millstone Edge. By the time the race arrived at Chatsworth, well into the second half of the stage, Boasson Hagen in the Yellow Jersey was in a group of 24 riders, around of minute off the leading group of six, but the main ‘grupetto’ of 75 riders was a further twenty minutes behind. Three Team Sky riders tried to break off the following group in Matlock, but were quickly caught again. As they tackled the ascent

of Cromford Hill, the gap to the leaders was reduced to half a minute, before Gorka Izagirre (Movistar) and Stefan Kung (BMC) attacked off the leading group to reach the summit clear of the field. Izagirre made a break to lead into Belper around 15 seconds clear, but was then joined by Kung, Matteo Trentin (Etixx-Quick Step) and Jens Debusschere (Lotto) while the rest of the original leading group were absorbed back into the following group.

THE TOUR OF BRITAIN >> Continues from front page These four looked strong, working together to lead by around 40 seconds through Horsley Woodhouse, Smalley, West Hallam and into Ilkeston where Izagirre took the final sprint of the day. The gap to the following group began to shrink as the leaders passed through Trowell and headed into Nottinghamshire with 12 km to go. With 10km remaining, Trentin made his move and struck out for home. As the other three ran out of steam the following group, led by Boasson Hagen and Poels, finally swallowed them up. Three kilometres out the Italian, Trentin, was ten seconds clear, and still looking strong, when Boasson Hagen attacked off the group to reach him with just 2km remaining. The pair turned into the Forest neck-and-neck, but Trentin found a final burst of energy to take the stage win, the third for Etixx-Quick Step. Both were classed at the same time, with Owain Doull (Wiggins) at the head of the group four seconds behind. Poels was in this group, but with time bonuses for the sprints and his second place, Boasson Hagen increased his lead in the General Classification to 13 seconds. As for the remaining group of 75,

including Sir Bradley Wiggins, they trailed in 46 minutes behind, outside the cut-off time for riders to continue the Tour. They were allowed to continue in the final two stages by the commissaries, but race director Mick Bennett was disappointed by the performance of the domestic teams that made up much of this group. “It was a difficult stage,” he said. “Perhaps it was my fault that it was too difficult, but I felt let down by their performance.” The following day the Tour visited East Anglia, racing from Fakenham down to Ipswich where German sprinter Andre Greipel (Lotto) took the honours, before the final stage in London. After 14 laps, taking in many of the capital’s landmarks, Greipel was again first over the line, but was relegated to last for veering into Viviani’s path in the run to the finish. Boasson Hagen was fourth in the London finale and maintained his 13 seconds advantage over Poels to become the first rider to win the Tour of Britain for the second time, following his victory in 2009.

Xtreme ELiquids

What started as nothing more than a hobby for Derek Waldram has turned into a thriving business, a passion and a way of life. Derek, 50, started making his own e-liquids as a hobby and has never looked back since. He made them for himself at first, then for friends also and as word spread he opened up an online business. In the last couple of years the online business has continued to grow and now Derek and son Ashley, 20, have added a traditional bricks and mortar store to their business portfolio. They have recently opened the Xtreme Eliquids store on Babington Lane, Derby, where they sell around 300 juice flavours anf vaping equipment to new and experienced vapers alike. They make their own flavours on the premises and

are always more than happy to give people advice on how vaping can help people quit smoking. Derek had been smoking since his teenage years and has not touched a cigarette since he started vaping two years ago. He said: “I am much healthier now, have lost six stone in weight and have saved a small fortune since I quit cigarettes. “I get real job satisfaction from what I do, especially when smokers come into the store and tell me that they really want to quit and wonder whether vaping might help. “In the first week we opened we had four people give up smoking and take up vaping instead and this really makes me happy because so many people are desperate to stop smoking.”

His store is bright and modern and Derek loves to point out how much money customers could save by switching smoking for vaping. He said: “Based on a £6.50 pack of cigarettes and someone smoking 20 a day then they could save more than £2,370 by taking up vaping instead.” The juices Xtreme Eliquids are made to a 20/80 PG/ VG mix which are ideal for those who are intolerant to higher levels of PG and great for cloud chasers who like the really big vape clouds. When it comes to flavours then they offer everything you could possibly think of…and then some. While they have the ever popular drink, fruit, dessert and tobacco flavours there is also their new 50 shades of vape range which contains, as you might expect, some very suggestive flavours.

Flavours in the range includes ‘spank me’, ‘let’s get kinky’, ‘bite me’ and ‘dark and dirty.’ Derek’s son Ashley is often found in the lab above the shop where he makes the juices for both online and offline customers but he can also be found helping out on the shop floor too. He said: “It is great being part of a family business and I love helping people and making sure they get exactly what they want. “We are very friendly here and encourage people to drop by and have a chat about vaping or to ask any questions that they may have. Helping people is all part of the service.” Visit Xtreme Eliquids at 70 Babington Lane, Derby, call 07510 755505 or find them online at www. xtreme-eliquids.co.uk

SATISFACTION WITH EAST MIDLANDS TRAINS GROWS C

ustomers of East Midlands Trains continue to be amongst the most satisfied rail travellers in the UK, according to figures released by independent watchdog, Transport Focus. The latest customer research shows that 89% of customers are satisfied with their East Midlands Trains’ service, marking a 2% year-on-year increase, with satisfaction also 9% higher than the national average. The figures demonstrate the highest level of satisfaction ever recorded for East Midlands Trains in a survey carried out during the Spring. “We are very pleased with the results which demonstrate that we are continuing to improve in an industry where customer expectation continues to rise,” said Jake Kelly, Managing Director at East Midlands Trains. “These results are a testament to the hard work and professionalism of our employees day in, day out, to deliver the best service they can.” There has also been a marked increase in satisfaction with East Midlands Trains’ stations, with overall satisfaction with stations rising to 88%, a 5% year-on-year increase. The upkeep and repair of stations and cleanliness were also rated highly, helping to drive a 6% increase in the category of 'overall station environment'. Since the start of the East Midlands Trains franchise in 2007, more than £300 million has been invested in improvements to stations including the major improvement work to transform Nottingham's railway station. Over the past 12 months more than £700,000 has been spent on accessibility improvements at 39 different stations to make it easier for customers. “Moving forward, we’re continuing to invest in the areas we know make a different to our customers,” added Mr Kelly. “Customer experience training is being rolled out to even more of our front-line employees and there will be continued focus on punctuality and reliability to ensure that we maintain our position as the most punctual long-distance train operator in the country.”

CITY DEVELOPMENT PLAN WOULD FOCUS ON RIVER

P

lans to create homes, cafes and bars along the bank of the River Derwent, in Derby, could have a massive impact on the city. Derby City Council’s ‘Our City, Our River’ scheme includes proposals for 1000 homes to be built by the riverside together with cafes, bars and restaurants, turning the river into a focal point of the city. The city council’s ‘Our City, Our River’ scheme initially looked at new flood defences along the banks of the Derwent. Three packages were proposed; the first looked at protecting Duke Street, Little Chester and the Alfreton Road industrial area, as far as Darley Abbey. A second proposed scheme would protect the city centre and Chaddesden with barriers from Sowter Road to Meadow Lane. The third scheme would protect Breadsall. The latest plans would also see the eastern side of the river transformed around Chester Green, with flats and houses built on the site of the former Aida Bliss works and alongside City Road with further development on the area now called North Riverside, across the river from the River Gardens and the Riverlights complex. Development of the riverside in Derby has already seen apartments on the eastern bank connected to the city via the

The plan to develop the river front comes just weeks after the sale of the Riverlights complex next to Derby’s River Gardens. He hopes that this will help Derby to rediscover its river. “Derby, like so many industrial cities, turned its back on the river and has been slow to turn around to face it again,” said Mr Forkin. “People are starting to understand that the river is a massive asset for the city and we should be moving towards it, not away from it. Derby is here because of the river. The Romans built the original encampments because

of the crossing of the Derwent and the industrial museum is here because of the river.” The flood defences would need to be completed before other could developments to go ahead and a decision on the planning application is expected in the autumn. The "hybrid application" includes full and outline planning proposals. It is thought that the project would cost in the region of £50 million.

REFURBISHMENT OF ‘BRUTALIST’ ASSEMBLY ROOMS COULD BE ‘FANTASTIC’

S

ince the fire, eighteen month ago in the plant room, Derby Assembly Rooms has been closed leaving Derby without a principle concert venue. Derby City Council are expected to decide, soon, how to move forward with the likely outcome that a new venue will be built leaving question marks over the future of the present venue. One possibility is that the Assembly Rooms could be demolished and there will probably be few tears shed as many think of the building as ugly and unsightly. However, it seems that the Assembly Rooms is now being recognised as a prime example of what architects are describing as the ‘brutalist’ style and the National Trust is starting to recognise its value. Former Derby architect Derek Latham believes that the building has architectural merit and would be sorry if it was to be demolished. He also thinks that the building should be returned to the purpose for which it was intended. “The point about ‘brutalist’ architecture is about showing great strength and, in this case, about giving a certain civic

grandeur to the Market Place,” says Mr Latham. “The building needs to be of a significant scale to fit in the Market Place and that was what was being addressed in this case.” The present Assembly Rooms building designed by Sir Hugh Casson and opened in 1977 by Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother. The original building had been destroyed by fire in 1963, It seems that one reason for the lack of public affection for the current building is due to the trend for using concrete as a building material in the 1960s and 70s. “There is an antipathy towards concrete,” explains Mr Latham, “which doesn’t shine on a dull day whereas on the continent, in the sunshine, concrete buildings can look very dramatic and that ruggedness is repaid by the brightness of the weather. “Showing strength is the essence of the ‘brutalist’ style and, while Derby has had other concrete buildings, they were not of the ‘brutalist’ style, so the Assembly Rooms is unique in Derby. If you look at the Assembly Rooms you can see the great cantilevered beams that come out. The very scale of it is about being strong.

Derby engine-maker RollsRoyce has won an order worth £500 million to supply Trent 700 engines and long-term engine service support to Airbus for five new Beluga XL cargo aircraft. The new aircraft will replace the current Airbus Beluga fleet, which is powered by engines from American rival GE. The new Beluga XL, based on the A330 design, was launched in November 2014 to address rising demand for the Airbus A350 XWB and other programs. The new Beluga XL will provide Airbus with around a third more air transport capacity than the current Beluga, so named after its resemblance to the beluga whale. Bertrand George, Airbus Senior Vice-President, Head of Beluga XL programs, said: "We look forward to the Trent 700 powering this important development in our air transport strategy. The engine has an excellent record on the A330 and is ideally suited to our requirements for this aircraft." Simon Carlisle, Rolls-Royce, Executive Vice President, Strategy and Future Programs – Civil Large Engines, said: "We welcome this decision to select an engine that is the clear market leader on the A330 and offers outstanding performance in terms of fuel burn, reliability, emissions and noise." The Trent 700 has won more than 60 per cent of new orders over the last three years and now

accounts for 90 per cent of A330 freighters in service and on order. Airbus’s roots as a pan-European aircraft manufacturer means it has facilities located around the continent making major sections of aeroplanes. These are then brought together at final assembly plants in Toulouse, Hamburg and Tiajian in China. A new plant is currently being constructed in Mobile, Alabama. Belugas are a regular sight at Airbus’s plant in Broughton, North Wales, where the wings for all of the company’s airliners are manufactured. Airbus recently invested £21m in a new facility at the site where Belugas can be loaded, under cover, with finished aircraft wings. Previously, loading operations could only be carried out on relatively calm days as the Belugas’ giant cargo doors acted as giant sails when opened. This made operations dangerous if gusts of wind reached 30 knots. Airbus is scaling down production of its Trent 700-powered A330 aircraft, as airlines wait for the introduction of the new A330neo model with its more efficient Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engines. In July Rolls-Royce issued a profit warning for. Whilst they had forecast a fall in the number of old-model A330s built and sold, the rate of decline has been greater than expected and the market for the engines and their servicing deals has also shrunk faster than expected.

The ‘brutalist’ style of the Assembly Rooms is about showing strength. “I would be sad to see it go. I think we could do a fantastic refurbishment, one that is more likely to produce what we want, and I think that as the only example of ‘brutalist’ architecture that Derby has, we could re-

present it in a very good way. In years to come people will say ’Why did that go?’” Mr Latham added that the design was chosen after a competition. He initially favoured a sheer glass design by James Stirling

that would still be considered contemporary. “It looked more contemporary, however, the interior didn’t work. Sir Hugh Casson’s design really did work. The spaces inside, the way they work together, the brief that the

Great Hall had to do everything and the grandeur inside is good.” A decision on the future of the Assembly Rooms and its possible replacement could be made before Christmas.

DERBYSHIRE CANCER FIGHTER RAISES MONEY FOR SAVOUR LIFE CHARITY

A

cancer fighter is championing the healing properties of organic produce and a healthier lifestyle after a complete diet overhaul saw him selfmanage the terminal disease. Connell McNelis was diagnosed with stage III kidney cancer in March 2013 when doctors discovered a 6.7 centimetre tumour. After successful surgery, Connell believed things were improving until August of the same year, when the devastating discovery was made that his cancer had spread to the skin and he was diagnosed with stage IV, terminal cancer, turning his life upside down.

“This charity will help those with a cancer diagnosis or those going through treatment. Savour Life will fund juicing and nutrition workshops at the local organic Trinity Farm and I would love people to support this wonderful cause. The more money we raise, the more people we can help.” After extensive research into how to battle the illness, he found everything pointed to a natural and holistic approach. He soon implemented a vegan diet and juiced organic vegetables as part of his new healthy lifestyle, which he attributes to him being in the best shape of his life and tumour free. Now Connell is keen to raise awareness and funds for the fatal disease which saw 4,252 deaths in 2012. To raise funds to enable him to launch his charity Savour Life, he ran his first Nottingham Robin Hood Half Marathon on 27th September 2015. Connell’s target was to complete the run within two hours, and he was delighted with the result of 01.44.28. Connell said: “This charity will help those with a cancer diagnosis or those going through treatment.

Savour Life will fund juicing and nutrition workshops at the local organic Trinity Farm and I would love people to support this wonderful cause. The more money we raise, the more people we can help.” Connell is raising money through the world’s most popular fundraising website, GoFundMe, which has helped raise over $3.7M for cancer related campaigns since its launch in 2010. Kelsea Little, GoFundMe spokesperson said: “Connell’s GoFundMe campaign for his charity, Savour Life, is very inspiring and we wish him the best of luck with his half marathon. Connell is just one of thousands of fundraisers across the UK who trust our platform to support their fundraising for the causes that are close to their hearts.”

Assembly Rooms vision for EKV Designs Local Pride Park based firm, EKV Design Ltd, have created design concepts for several inner city Derby sites which they feel would benefit from regeneration. EKV have been working in conjunction with The University of Nottingham’s (UoN) Graduate School since March of this year and have collaborated recently with local property experts and developers about the future of the city. The concepts also coincide with EKV’s celebration of 9 successful years of business in Derby, following Managing Director Jonathan Naden’s inception of the company in 2006, and will be published along with a redesigned website which is due to go live on 1st October. The largest of the concept schemes proposes a complete redevelopment of the, now defunct, Derby Assembly Rooms (below). The design gives a new vision of the existing Brutalist structure which is proposed to be retained in part, but incorporates new arcaded retail spaces and restaurants, a much needed Derby conference facility on the upper levels, as well as duplex urban living units above the existing structure and a glazed roof-top river view restaurant. The building has been labelled as ‘The Signal Box’ in reference to Derby’s long running heritage links with the UK rail industry and engineering, and would sit opposite the Quad building in Derby’s Market Place, framing the vista from the redeveloped council offices and recently finished magistrates courts. The concept incorporates a 55 metre long, colour LED billboard display which would continually show events and updates about Derby city life, and be a central visual focus for the passing public. “We feel Derby deserves an iconic building to replace the assembly rooms, but we also realize the importance of keeping a strong reference to the past successes of the city. The existing [assembly rooms] building has some very individual architectural merit and should be recognized as a building of its time. However that’s not to say it can’t be looked at in a new way, and used as the underlying fabric for the ongoing development of the city centre” says EKV

Associate, James Millar. “The function of the concept is based strongly on the needs of the current city context, and the proposed facilities, such as large conference venues and urban living, should both complement and enhance other new developments in this area. We also wanted to provide reference to Derby’s great industrial heritage and its importance in the history of the rail network of the country”

DERBY RAIL USERS TO BENEFIT FROM INVESTMENT R ail customers on East Midlands Trains will benefit from around £13m of investment under a new agreement between Stagecoach Group and the Department for Transport which will see a new franchise starting in October, to run until at least March 2018. East Midlands Trains, which operate services from Derby, Chesterfield and Sheffield, to London, are to fund £8 million of the investment with a further £5 million from the government. Customers will benefit from a wide range of improvements with a fares freeze on Anytime fares to London, a ticket sale offering 250,000 discounted tickets, cleaner stations, roll-out of a new “Cafe en route” to provide an enhanced on board service, new technology to help provide faster and better customer information when and where customers need it and a new automated refunds system. Local communities will gain from the new deal, which will see an extra £250,000 invested in community rail, the introduction of a new schools education programme and continued investment in apprenticeships and graduate schemes. Stagecoach is to pay the Government £150 million to run the franchise from October 2015 to March 2018. The DfT has the option to extend the contract by up to one year. “This is a significant package of investment for customers travelling on East Midlands Trains, Britain’s most punctual long-distance train operator,” said Martin Griffiths, Stagecoach Group Chief Executive. “It will build on what our team has achieved over the past eight years and deliver further valuable improvements for the millions of passengers and many communities who rely on the East Midlands Trains network. "Britain's railway is part of the fabric of our communities, that is why our plans include more opportunities for graduates and young people, new links with schools, greater investment in community rail, and improved training to help our employees deliver a first class service to customers. "The new East Midlands Trains franchise will also deliver a multi-million-pound return to the taxpayer to help fund the Government's ongoing investment programme for the UK rail network." “This is a great deal for East Midlands Trains customers, and will mean significantly better journeys for passengers travelling around the region,” said rail minister Claire Perry. “This is another example of the work we’re doing to transform the UK’s railways as part of our long-term economic plan, with more than £38 billion being

East Midlands Trains will continue to run to London until at least 2018. spent on the network between 2014 and 2019.” Jake Kelly, Managing Director of East Midlands Trains, added: “This is great news for customers and taxpayers. Over the past eight years, we have demonstrated our commitment to providing the best possible service for our customers. The agreement with the Department for Transport will now allow us to invest even further in the areas that matter most to our customers. “As well as improvements to stations and our on-board service, we’ll also be rolling out new technology to make journeys even easier. At the same time, we’ll be offering better value for money by cutting the cost of thousands of fares and launching our biggest ticket seat sale, all designed to offer big improvements for millions of East Midlands Trains customers.”

Passengers should see further investment in Derby station.

EPM LANDS MAJOR AIRCRAFT ORDER

D

erby’s epm: Technology Group has announced it has won an order, to produce and supply composite aircraft interior components and sub structures, worth over £22 million over

five years. The company will supply up to 7,000 components a month to an undisclosed company supplying parts to Easy Jet and Jet 2. Epm’s components will allow the airlines to reduce the weight of their aircraft with the aim of allowing passengers to carry more luggage. Graham Mulholland, Chief Executive Officer of epm was delighted. “This is a great first announcement following our move which we completed with Derby Enterprise Growth Fund support into our purposebuilt 60,000 square foot technology centre eleven months ago,” he said. “My team have performed their socks off over the past 18 months to win the first aerospace contract which combines our high-performance engineering capability with a novel production method to produce composite parts and assemblies every eight minutes, with excellent R&D and KTP support from Derby University. “Our R&D activities have been steadily building up alongside our move into our new facility, and now provide our customers and with innovative knowhow. This is making our customer more competitive and opening doors for epm in new markets.” Epm, who moved to their new facility from Draycott, have made their name supplying specialist carbonfibre components to Formula 1 race teams and the defence industry. This announcement marks a new chapter for epm and will see the company’s work force double to around 230. “This is the first of a number of key opportunities we’re working on right now,” added Mr Mulholland. “I expect epm to be making more announcements as customers continue to engage with us and understand our new capabilities, capacity, engineering knowhow and our innovations moving forward. We’re very excited about being customer ready rather than taking new contracts on and learning on the job. Epm has always invested

heavily in its future. Our team is ready and we’re proud to be leading our future growth plans.”

Martin & Co Issue Stark Warning To Landlords Amidst Government Crackdown

F

ollowing recent Governments reports that landlords who fail to evict illegal immigrants will face up to five years in prison, a Derby based letting agency is warning landlords to conduct thorough checks on tenants. Martin& Co Derby is in support of new laws that will allow landlords to evict illegal immigrants without a court order and stronger punishments for rogue landlords who are making money out of illegal immigration. As the crisis in Calais continues to intensify, with thousands of migrants attempting to breach security at the Channel Tunnel every day, a new blacklist of rogue landlords is being introduced that will allow councils to keep track of who has been convicted in a bid to make it harder for illegal migrants to live in the UK. Managing director at Martin & Co Derby, David McKnight, said: “It is always good to see tougher crackdowns on rogue landlords being introduced and we completely agree with the stronger

“It is always good to see tougher crackdowns on rogue landlords being introduced and we completely agree with the stronger punishments.”

punishments. “Obviously this problem is currently a hot topic in the news and it is essential that more is done to stop landlords making money from illegal immigrants. Equally, it is important and good news that landlords are being given more eviction powers.” The proposals, which will be included in the upcoming immigration bill, will include a new criminal offence of failing to conduct checks or remove tenants that have no right to reside in the UK and will carry a penalty of up to five years imprisonment. The Home Office will be able to issue a notice confirming tenants no longer have the right to rent property, which will triggering a power for landlords to end the tenancy, without a court order. Landlords will have a requirement carry out "right to rent" checks on tenants' immigration status before they are able to rent the property. Mr McKnight added: “It is vital to crackdown on rogue landlords who are breaking the law as they are exploiting vulnerable people. "We have recently heard more about 'bed sheds' where rogue landlords are offering back garden spaces to tenants, which is just totally unacceptable. We cannot emphasise enough how important it is for landlords to run thorough checks before renting out their properties to potential tenants, which is why it is imperative to use a reputable letting agent.” Martin & Co is a member of ARLA, the Association of Residential Letting Agents and follows a professional code of conduct. NATIONAL AWARD FOR DERBY MUSEUMS

D

erby Museums have received a prestigious award for a new nature gallery which was designed in consultation with visitors and volunteers. Four outstanding examples of excellence in collections management were recognised at the Collections Trust’s Annual Conference 2015 at the Natural History Museum, London. The Participatory Practice Award was secured by Derby Museums for the “notice nature feel joy” gallery which the judges considered a “truly participatory project… in an object-rich gallery which has been created through a bold, experimental, playful and inclusive approach.” The ‘notice nature feel joy’ gallery, which includes 1,389 amazing specimens from the Derby Museums’ natural history collection, was opened by TV wildlife presenter Michela Strachan. The coproduction approach used to develop and create the new gallery involved hundreds of volunteers and explored the themes and stories suggested by visitors.

“We’re completely delighted at winning this prestigious award, it validates our coproduction approach and is a great accolade for our visitors, volunteers and partners who generously lent their time, energy, knowledge and skill to the project.” Andrea Hadley-Johnson, Co-production Manager said “We’re completely delighted at winning this prestigious award, it validates our coproduction approach and is a great accolade for our visitors, volunteers and partners who generously lent their time, energy, knowledge and skill to the project. We had a strong desire to work WITH people and not simply decide ourselves and do it TO people, together we have co-designed an exhibition rich with interesting encounters.” The museum team worked closely with visitors and volunteers to select specimens, design and construct

Visitors enjoying the ‘notice nature feel joy’ gallery. fixtures, and identify and explore themes for the gallery, revealing the process of the developing gallery throughout the installation process. “People told us that this open approach gave them an understanding of what went on behind the scenes; they felt the momentum of the project building and loved seeing the display develop. They felt involved and included,” added Mrs Hadley-Johnson.

“I feel this project has been the most innovative and inspiring that I’ve ever worked on,” said volunteer Ruth Bellamy, “especially in terms of being able to work with people from a wide range of disciplines and with diverse skill sets. I now rave about coproduction to anybody who will listen! I enjoyed the creativity and positivity of the project, it felt like there was a freedom to attempt the new and untried, and

to work the collections in ways that might have previously been impossible.” The co-production approach also sparked the addition of five creative commissions, six work experience placements and collaborations with Derby University, including geology, forensic biology, zoology, product design, illustration and graphic design students.

Theatre casts Shakespearen spell at QUAD Café

T

he Derby QUAD is embracing the arts by showcasing theatrical talent in afternoon theatre performances. The QUAD café was the place to be for a fun and spontaneous Shakespearean rendition of ‘MacBrew’ inspired by Macbeth. As café-goers sipped coffee and enjoyed lunch, actors took up a table towards the back of café and commenced to re-enact a scene from one of Shakespeare’s most popular plays. The piece was performed by 1623 Theatre, an award-winning company based at the QUAD, which is a thriving arts centre in the heart of Derby. It was a

special 15 minute performance and the entertaining scene was a unique blend of Shakespeare and British Sign Language, titled "Double, Double, Toil and Trouble". James Varney is MacBrew’s playwright and his piece is a vivid reworking of the weird sisters and their visions of the future. Supported by Artistic Director Ben Spiller et al, the creative team at 1623 Theatre have a winning formula when delivering punchy performances. Pamela, Judye and Elizabeth played their part with aplomb in a spin on their own version of the weird sisters' hell-broth so that they can discover Shakespeare's living heir. In an innovative modern-

day twist, they pinpointed various cafégoers to form part of an interactive theatrical session. Ben Spiller, Artistic Director at 1623 Theatre said: “The aim of these performances is to inspire, surprise, and affect people with Shakespeare's work through theatre and digital performances, learning workshops, participatory activities and training courses. 1623 Theatre have performed at events across the country including the RSC Fringe, BBC Gardeners'

World Live, Glastonbury Festival, Nottingham Playhouse, Poole's Cavern, rural village halls, shopping centres and open-air city spaces. From public workshops on ‘Shakespeare Night’ to Puppetry Master-classes and festival performances, the 1623 Theatre is running to packed audiences. East Midlands Photographer Warns Parents to Keep Babies Safe

Picture this. The most wonderful moment in your lives. Your world is set to change forever. You want to preserve every detail - right from the second those tiny little fingers and toes begin to wiggle at you! You need Kay Oliver Photography. Kay, herself a mother of two young boys, is an award-winning photographer who knows just how important it is to expertly capture those first moments in the world and preserve them for always. With over 14 years of experience in photographing newborns and children she has the skill, training, experience, the vision and the all-important caring

and sympathetic touch needed to turn memories into art. A Kay Oliver Photography experience is a memorable one too! From Newborn Art photography through to ‘Trash The Cake’ sessions for 1st and 2nd birthday babies, Kay’s sessions are a seamless mix of fun and professionalism. Special packages for maternity and baby photos are also available. Kay is often booked well in advance – so give her a call now to discuss your needs and wishes. No matter when your baby is due, Kay is flexible enough to work to your due date and can even squeeze in a late booking if your baby has already arrived. Kay Oliver Photography Capturing Memories to Treasure Always Tel: 07989 322308 Website: www.kayoliverphotography.co.uk

We’ve all seen photographs of beautiful newborn babies in baskets or nestling in the palm of a doting dads hand, but an East Midlands photographer is warning parents to be careful when booking these sessions and has issued some safety tips. Kay Oliver owner of Kay Oliver Photography based in Sawley warns that whilst new born photography is becoming more popular not all photographers have the necessary training to ensure that the shoots are safe. Following reports that two babies were injured after falling during sessions with a high street photographer Kay, who has been in business for 19 years wants to make more parents aware of the risks of not researching their newborn photographer. Parents wanting artistic images of their newborns are on the increase and a search of the internet will find a number of adorable images and even some eye-opening you-tube videos of people attempting to create their own shots at home. Kay who is fully trained in newborn photography has photographed 1000’s of families and has been photographing babies for 14 years says: “With newborn photography becoming more and more popular it is scary how many general photographers have started photographing newborns without any training and without knowing about the safety aspect of this style of photography. There has also been a rise in parents copying the new-born photography they see on photos without knowing how they are done.” “There are lots of gorgeous poses that babies can be put into but not all babies are comfortable in every pose so for this reason a photographer should not guarantee any poses before the session. Your baby should guide the session and the let the photographer know what is comfortable for them.”

Under 5’s portrait photographer 2013

With this in mind Kay has outlined some of the key tips for parents taking their babies to shoots: • Never leave your baby unattended during a session • Always stay next to your baby when props are in use • Make sure the photographer never uses glass props • Ensure all props are checked for sharp edges and sturdiness before use • Never force a baby into any pose always use gentle movements to position them comfortably • Make sure the photographer never stands on anything over the baby Kay advises that if in doubt, a good way to find out if your photographer is practicing safe conduct is to go onto the Baby and Newborn Photography Association (BANPAS) website where parents can search for fully insured photographers in their area. Helen McGlynn, Co-owner of BANPAS said “"As an association, BANPAS are very concerned that amateur or hobbyist photographers may try to recreate some of the complex poses which require expertise in both photography and editing. Newborn photography requires patience and skill - our clients are delicate new-born babies. We are keen on raising awareness amongst parents on how to choose a safe photographer, as shown in the beautiful work produced by Kay" To find an approved photographer visit www. banpas.co.uk To find out more about Kay Oliver Photography visit www.kayoliverphotography.co.uk call 07989 322308 or email info@kayoliverphotography. co.uk

AN AUCTION OF DERBYSHIRE BLUE JOHN, MONDAY 5TH OCTOBER 2015 The buzz of excitement around Blue John continues to radiate from the Antiques Department at Fellows, as new consignments are added to the catalogue and public interest builds after viewing at the NEC’s summer Antiques for Everyone fair. This necklace was consigned from a walk in valuation only last week; it is formed from 26 panels of cushion-shaped Blue John, set in silver and stamped for the famed Art Deco designer Thomas Mott of Birmingham. With an estimate £300-500, it will be entered into the auction on the 5th October in the Jewellery Quarter along with approximately 250 other wonderful pieces. Blue John is often fashioned into jewellery, as it is extremely beautiful however notoriously fragile, this unique fluorite is easily broken when shaped into larger pieces. It is only found in the limestone of Castleton, in the Peak District of North Derbyshire. Staff from Fellows visited the Castleton mines to learn more about this semi-precious material, and listened to retired miner Peter Harrison speak about extracting Blue John, and the ‘lost seam’ which has recently been rediscovered. The collectability of Blue John stems from its rarity; in the UK this material is found only at Blue John Cavern and Treak Cliff Cavern at Castleton in Derbyshire, during the 19th century it was mined

for its ornamental value, however today mining is limited to only one tonne per year. Fellows will shortly announcing tour dates around the Derbyshire area, where you can visit and view the collection, and speak to Fellows staff to learn more about this material. Keen collectors and enthusiasts will already be aware of Blue John and its mythology, however for the uninitiated, it provides a fascinating story; the Romans believed that drinking wine from a chalice made in this material would prevent drunkenness, and there are many mysteries surrounding the name itself. Whatever the truth, it’s not hard to see how Blue John has captivated collectors for hundreds of years. This collection is thought to be one of the largest of Blue John, and uniquely brings together a vast range of objects from neo-classical style urns and ornaments, to tiny bowls and cups to contain your trinkets, with items on sale from £30 to £30,000 there is something to suit all budgets and tastes. Email info@fellows.co.uk to register your interest in the Blue John collection at Fellows, and be the first to know when Derbyshire tour dates are announced to see the collection yourself. Wiltshire Farm Foods Older and disabled people are missing out on smart phone technology to help them travel The benefits of taking action to encourage more older and disabled people to use apps to improve their public transport experience are highlighted in a report published today. Meeting the Needs of Older and Disabled Travellers, published by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) and ITS UK, highlights that over 80 per cent of the over 60s would not use journey planning websites, apps or text messages that can give them valuable travel information to significantly improve their journey. This is a missed opportunity and the report calls for a fresh approach to developing and marketing these technologies to this group. The report highlights that there is little or no awareness among older and disabled people of the potential benefits of travel information services delivered to smart phones. Smart phones and apps can give users up-to-date information on their travel and enable them to make decisions based on their individual needs. But despite the ever increasing use of data to produce fast responsive transport information, because of the slow uptake of smart technologies among older and disabled people, a large proportion of this group is missing out on the benefits this data can bring to their lives.

“The rapid growth in new technologies represents an even bigger opportunity to improve people’s experience of public transport.” Sahar Danesh, Principal Policy Advisor at the IET, said: “Over recent years our public transport system has benefitted from improvements to the physical infrastructure and service provision. The rapid growth in new technologies represents an even bigger opportunity to improve people’s experience of public transport. If we can find a way to encourage older and disabled people to embrace this technology, many of them could enjoy fully independent travel instead of being housebound or relying on relatives and carers as they do today. The potential implications for their quality of life – and for the economy – are huge. “There are all kinds of technology solutions that could really transform the travelling experience of older and disabled people, and yet they are not being used. Intelligent Transport Systems have the potential to connect data from different transport modes in order to provide an all-encompassing plan for a journey. The passenger is at the heart of a journey and much more should be done to make technology accessible to all users. Uncertainty about any aspect of travel can often deter an older or disabled person from making a trip. “If we fail to tackle this we risk excluding disabled and older people from basic human rights of

independence, mobility and social inclusions.” Jennie Martin, Secretary General of ITS (UK), said: “ITS (UK) set up our Inclusive Mobility Interest Group in 2008 in order to promote the use of Intelligent Transport Systems to support disabled and elderly travellers. The collaboration with the IET in the production of this report is an important milestone for the IMIG and we look forward to building on this for the future.” Elliot Dunster, Group Head of Policy, Research and Public Affairs at disability charity Scope, said: “Disabled people still face a huge digital divide. This has a significant social and financial impact. Better access to modern technology could transform disabled people’s lives, by supporting them to live more independently, and to access services on equal terms. For example, journey-planning websites and apps can provide information about access and assistance, supporting disabled people to get out and about. Access to the internet is also vital to being a savvy shopper. Many of the tools used to compare the best consumer deals and offers are found online. But not all web content or modern technology is accessible or compatible with assistive technology. The law is unclear how far service providers must go in making their websites accessible. Scope believes a review of the law on website accessibility for disabled people is now vital.” Simon Bottery, Director of Policy and External Relations at Independent Age, the older people’s charity, said: “New technology has the potential to help older and disabled people make much wider use of public transport so we welcome the call for charities, the public, government and the private sector to work more closely together to develop it. Public transport is a lifeline for older people, especially in rural areas where shops and facilities may be further away. Many older people use public transport to travel to the GP or to hospital appointments, and it also helps them to stay connected to family and friends, reducing social isolation. It’s vital that older and disabled people, especially those with poor health or on low incomes, are included in the development of new technology, such as apps, to ensure these are affordable and easy to use.” The report highlights that full stakeholder engagement is required between industry, travel operators, Government, engineering professionals and users, to enable a joined-up approach to ensuring that technology becomes a greater focus for developing inclusive mobility. The Government’s current Inclusive Mobility Best Practice Guide offers a platform to help inform what needs to be considered in terms of inclusive approaches but currently includes no reference to technology. A joint IET and ILC report, published in July 2015, highlighted that more than half (57 per cent) of 80 – 84 year-olds have no internet access. It also highlighted that the over 65s in the UK currently spend around £2.2 billion per week on goods and services.

Strictly Step back in time and Come Dancing at The Old Bell Hotel

w

eekends usually fly by and the next thing you know, another long Monday is stretching out in front of you like a 50 kilometre road. What can you do to make the work week more bearable? Fill it with great things to do! Banish those Monday morning blues and have something to look forward to by popping into The Old Bell Hotel for a lovely dance. The 17th century pub on Sadler Gate has refurbished its ballroom earlier this year which is now the location of the weekly Tea Dance held every Monday from 1:30pm – 4:00pm. Dancers with varying levels of experience can shimmy along to the pub for a cup of tea, slice of cake and enjoy live music played by an expert organist. If you’ve been hooked on the BBC’s highly addictive Strictly Come Dancing show, now is the time to unleash your inner Ola Jordan or Anton du Beke. Martin Atterbury, the current organist at the Tea

Dance has been on the circuit since 1973 and plays vibrant music to accompany Ballroom, Waltz, Foxtrot, Quickstep and Latin American dancing. Martin said: “It’s such a great crowd and the venue is lovely too.” Previously held at The Assembly Rooms prior to its closure, the popular tea dance couldn’t be at a more appropriate venue. The Old Bell Hotel is steeped in history and is supposedly one of the city’s oldest pubs. Glass domes in the Grand Ballroom are stunning and the Jacobean architecture is a beautiful backdrop for the dancers as they glide around the floor. The tea dance is popular amongst pensioners, who make up the majority of dancers, but there are also younger dancers too. Karen Petty and husband Phil Petty have been dancing for 10 years who enjoy the tea dance at The Old Bell Hotel every Monday. Paul Hurst, owner of The Old Bell Hotel said: "After the fire at the Assembly Rooms, I'm thrilled to be able to offer the Tea Dance a new home. The Old Bell, as a coaching inn, was the centre of the community. To be able to restore this iconic building and see it being used by groups of all ages is really exciting. Once again, The Old Bell is becoming a place for the whole community to enjoy, young and old." Put on your best frock or cool threads and get down to the next weekly Tea Dance. For more information about the Tea Dance, call The Old Bell Hotel on 01332 723 090 now or go to their Facebook page www.facebook.com/bellhotelderby.

REIGATE PARK PRIMARY SCHOOL MOVES INTO BRAND NEW BUILDING PUPILS AND TEACHERS BENEFIT FROM REBUILD AS PART OF THE PRIORITY SCHOOL BUILDING PROGRAMME Pupils from Reigate Park Primary School will celebrate moving into their multi-million pound new school building on Monday (18 September) with the burial of time capsule. Reigate Park Primary School’s existing buildings have been replaced with a brand new two-storey building with state of the art construction, heating, lighting and ventilation systems to ensure excellent energy efficiency. The rebuild is part of the national Priority School Building Programme (PSBP) to rebuild schools. The Council was successful with its bid as part of this programme, and Reigate Park Primary School is one of six new schools across Derby to be re-built. As a result of the Council’s successful bid, approximately £3.8 millionhas been spent completely redeveloping the school site, ensuring generations of pupils will have access to the best possible facilities for learning.

This has been a very exciting project which has completely transformed the school, and will further improve the learning opportunities for our children as part of Derby City Council’s plan for investing in education in Derby. Councillor Sarah Russell, Cabinet Member for Education and Skills, said: “I am delighted that works are now complete for Reigate Park Primary School. This is an exciting scheme to improve the learning environment for the pupils and staff. We are looking forward to the remaining schools being rebuilt which will help enable us to continue to improve teaching and learning for Derby children." Peter Hallsworth, Headteacher at Reigate Park Primary School, said: “The governors, pupils, parents and staff are extremely grateful for the fantastic new learning environment that we are now fortunate to have. We are sure that this new environment will support our children in their learning and our teachers in their teaching. We would like to thank the Education Funding Agency, Derby City Council and Bowmer & Kirkland for providing us with this new school.” Work on the main building at Reigate Park Primary School was completed and handed over by contractor Bowmer & Kirkland Limited on 1 June 2015.

The Tax Benefits Of Thinking Inside ‘The Box’ – The Patent Box. by Pete Miller of The Miller Partnership Is your company making trading profits through exploiting patents? If it is, have you considered the amount of tax relief you could be saving with the Patent Box? Introduced on April 1 2013 to encourage UK innovation and entrepreneurship, the Patent Box is a relief which will, in due course, allow companies who own patents to cut their overall Corporation Tax rate substantially. It is being phased in over five years from April 1 2013, with relief standing at 60% of the maximum in FY 2013, at 70% in FY 2014 and reaching 100 % in FY 2017. So, if you or your client is a trading company with profits from exploiting patents after March 31 2013, you might want to consider what Patent Box relief could do for you. First, you’ll need to ask the following questions: • Does the company own patents which it exploits as part of its trade?

We’ve also been working with our clients to ensure that they will continue to qualify for relief through the Patent Box should their business be affected by group reorganisations, sales or mergers, for example. Patent Box is particularly generous in that even if you don’t yet hold a patent, you could benefit by applying for one now. The notional relief available starts to accumulate from the time the patent is applied for and can be claimed once the patent is granted. And applying for a patent might not be as expensive as you might think. To find out more, please contact The Miller Partnership by phone or email right away for a free consultation. If you’re eligible for the Patent Box we’ll do the necessary tax computations. But remember, this relief is only available from the time you apply for the patent, so don’t delay.

• Or does the company exploit someone else’s patent under an exclusive licence? • Does the company have intellectual property that could be patented so that patent box relief can be claimed? If the answer to any of these questions is ‘yes’, the Patent Box may well be available to you. In recent months I’ve received many inquiries from companies and/or their accountants in sectors as diverse as home interiors and civil engineering – and most stand to benefit substantially from this welcome tax relief.

Are you old enough to remember the pre-digital age? There are less of us now no mobile phones, no email or internet, OMG no Facebook? If any of you have been watching Cradle to Grave, BBC 2 you will even have been reminded of a time before video recorders (what are they then? crikey it was a long time ago) Anyway it was a time when if we wanted to market our business or event or party, or communicate with people we had to use real paper printed ink and an actual written message. On a free marketing flyer, promotional leaflet, advertising brochure call it what you will and when we got loads of these pushed through our doors and they fell out from inside our newspapers and were rather annoying (20th Century annoying but oh how times have changed, and what goes around come around. We don’t see so many of those anymore everyone uses that time saving invention the internet you know the one that takes us just 20 minutes every single day to sort out our emails (don’t get behind will you? you’ll never catch up!) 21st Century annoying) and that digital media solution that allows us to spend 3 hours chatting to our new friends in whereverland . . and looking at what their toddler just ate for breakfast or laughing at some silly anecdote they saw in a shopping mall on their holiday to Lanzarote and glancing at that marketing advertisement that popped up in the middle (21st Century annoying) and if something does catch your eye who has time to look at it now? oh I must bookmark that will have to do it later now coz I’ve spent a bit too much time on FB. And that’s the thing we see so many online adverts now that we are starting to become de-sensitised to them we can hit save, and bookmark, and try to remember. . . but we can only look at one at a time on our little screens. If you really want to get yourself, your business, your product, your service noticed. There is still a place for the free marketing flyer. Put your consumer head on now. When a marketing flyer drops on your doormat particularly when its NOT at the same time as your newspaper or royal mail post this is why you (and many other people) will take notice 9 reasons people will notice your free marketing flyer template design: 1. If you hear it drop, curiosity will get the better of you and make you get up and look 2. Seeing as you got up you may as well read it 3. Boring old crap, irrelevant nonsense (poor design) in the bin – Yes this is always a possibility. 4. BUT – 1- you still have to physically hold it in your hand touch it and feel it can’t do 2 second delete here! 5. BUT – 2. if its well designed has an element of intrigue and enticement about it, and resonates with you then you might just save

it for later. 6. Stick it up on your kitchen pinboard on the front of the fridge / boiler, with your favourite magnet 7. Look at it unavoidably every time you get some milk for your tea / coffee. 8. Later on (at a time that suits you) Make a coffee get milk and handy marketing flyer sit down with your smart phone / tablet and . . 9. Read marketing flyer like what you see look up more info on their website join / log on / buy / share call them. We seem to get so few of these marketing flyers nowadays, in comparison, that I think we do take a bit more notice. Its worth considering a free marketing flyer to promote your business. The big players still do it British Gas, Macmillan and your small local business with the right marketing message through the right door will get noticed many clients of wild ideas have been really pleased with their “It has been excellent to work with Linda who has done my brilliant leaflet” “Linda has brilliantly re designed my leaflet for my Horsehair Jewellery Business.” “The flyers/door drop increased our revenue significantly – Linda did a great job for us.” “The flyers Linda created for me are fabulous and my business is booming.” SO now I have convinced you, in order to give yourself a fighting chance to design something that stands out and gets you past point 3 at least to point 6 and ideally to point 9. The Border Collie Trust Great Britain in Staffordshire is a registered charity which rescues and rehomes Border Collies and Collie crosses throughout the UK TRADING STANDARDS URGE ANIMAL LOVERS TO DO THEIR HOMEWORK BEFORE BUYING A PET

F

ollowing an increasing number of reports from vets to Trading Standards about illegally imported dogs, Trading Standards in Derby are recommending that potential pet owners research the origin of pets before they purchase them. Earlier this month, Miss Lymara Smith purchased a Chihuahua puppy via the Gumtree website. However, when she took it to her local vets at Pride Park, it was discovered that the puppy, named Bobi had a Romanian microchip but no other formal documentation, such as a pedigree certificate or pet passport. A call was then made to Derby City Trading Standards and as a result Bobi was taken in to quarantine to ensure that he had received vaccinations for rabies and treatment for tapeworm. The puppy then has to be checked by the Veterinary Superintendent before he can be released back to his owner, Lymara. Miss Smith said about the incident: “I was so upset when they took Bobi away to be quarantined; I wasn’t sure if I would get him back. I’d definitely urge people thinking of buying a pet online to check that they were bred in the UK and if not, vaccinated

and micro-chipped so you don’t have to go through the ordeal we are, we still have to wait another 2 weeks before he can come home.” The UK has been rabies-free since 1922 as a result of strict import restrictions and quarantine rules; however the increasing illegal smuggling of pets from countries where rabies is still prevalent is threatening to reintroduce rabies, along with other infectious diseases to the UK. Councilor Baggy Shanker, Cabinet Member for Regulatory Services states “People see a puppy which looks fine and happy. The first time they take it to a vet, the vet discovers that the puppy hasn’t been properly vaccinated and reports it to Trading Standards. The discovery leaves the owners upset when they find that their puppy isn’t allowed to go home and instead is put into quarantine at some considerable cost and risk their pet being euthanized if costs can’t be met.” He adds "It is now a lucrative business which is increasing across the East Midlands." Any cats or dogs brought into the UK from abroad must be micro-chipped, have a valid pet passport and be vaccinated against rabies and in addition dogs must be treated for tapeworm. To help prevent the further illegal importation of pets, Trading Standards has issued a set of guidelines to follow: Buy your animal from a reputable supplier – advice on buying a dog or cat is available from a range of animal organisations, such as the Dog Advisory Council, Kennel Club, the Dogs Trust and the RSPCA Check the animal’s history by speaking to a previous owner – if you are buying a puppy or kitten, you should ask to see it with its mother and the rest of the litter. View the animal and its documentation before you buy – if it was born outside the UK it must have either a pet passport or a veterinary certificate. The pet passport needs to confirm that it was vaccinated against rabies at the correct age (normally at three months). For dogs, the passport should also show that it has been treated for tapeworm. If you have any doubts about an animal, speak to your vet before agreeing to buy it. More information about buying pets can be found online on the RSPCA website and the government website

Dogs are accommodated in comfortable and secure, purpose built kennels where their health and wellbeing is top priority. Founded in 1976 by Hazel Monks, the Border Collie Trust Great Britain has gone from strength to strength. Trustee Ben Wilkes said: “Our staff provide a high quality of care for all dogs. Keeping them healthy, safe and happy whilst they find a new home is of paramount importance to us.” If you are thinking of adopting, the first step is to complete a Rehoming Application form available from the website then co-ordinate a visit to the centre. Your application will tell us more about you

and your circumstances, so we can best match a dog to be your next lovable pet. Adopting a dog is a serious decision not to be taken lightly. The Border Collie Trust Great Britain have the dogs’ best interests at heart and are happy to reserve a dog for you to meet. Full details of the kennel’s opening times can be found online. Border Collies are intelligent, intuitive, sensitive and eager to please. If this sounds like the perfect pet for you, please get in touch now by calling 01889 577058 or via email on info@bordercollietrustgb.org.uk.

Subaru Outback

I

n today's chequered chess board of confusion that is the 4x4 market, it's easy to get bushwhacked by the brandished blandishments of all those vying brands. Everyone seems to have 'the one' for ones needs - but if there's one brand you can depend on in that market, it has to be Subaru. And in the new 5th generation Outback they've managed to set back the opposition by quite a few dusty miles, for the latest Subaru is proof against anything any wily terrain can throw at it. As with everyone who voted this year for a 'staycation', (vacation at home) our miserable summer has played havoc with my happy chuckle quotient. Every day I sprang up expecting sunshine only to be greeted with wind, rain and yet more of the same. However, this past week has brought delight and the reason is plain to see - because out front is the Outback: Subaru's invigorating new 4x4 estate. If ever a vehicle provided a pickme-up dash of zesty promise to banish the Atlantic depression blues, it has to be this 'go-get-'em buddy' of 4x4 refinement. Hop into this terrain-tackling beauty and it's a certainty you'll be able to face any challenge from crowded cul-de-sac to extensive country estate, exerting as it does, an understated mastery of all it surveys. It's a lovely and easy car to drive. Go gently and it rides well: go rapidly and the handling is excellent. It takes you out and it gets you back regardless of what the weather and pothole-blasted highways can throw at it. And all the time you'll be sitting high and dry, smart with a hint of smugness,

replete in the knowledge that this vehicle simply cannot be bettered in the context of the parameters it so radically defines. In short, others might come close but the new Outback shows them a clean pair of heels every time. I loved its looks, its versatility, its roominess and load carrying capacity and its confidence inspiring solidity of build and purpose. It's Rambo and the 'Muscles from Brussels' rolled into one with a touch of the Arnolds thrown in for good measure. This car is the automotive equivalent - packing punch, power and personality in equal measure. It's that rare sort of car that insists you'll be back for more. Even the 148bhp 2.0 diesel horizontally opposed 4 cylinder 'boxer' engine is tough. It's very smooth, pulls like a train and is linked to Subaru's brilliant four wheel drive system via the excellent CVT Lineartronic transmission controlled manually or left as automatic. You can do 125mph if you want and overall you will get around 45mpg. (The very honest Subaru figures are 46.3mpg). Star quality comes at a good price of ÂŁ32,995 for the highly specified SE version with its electrically powered seats and power operated hatch - not to mention a top quality infotainment system, sunroof and more. And if all that isn't enough, the Outback offers a surprise. Like the forward-looking manufacturer that it is, Subaru offers technology so novel that it makes you blink. 'EyeSight' uses 3D images captured by cameras to prompt driver action. There's brake light recognition, pre-collision steering assist, pre-collision braking...the list goes on.

The only problem that I envisage is the psychological sense of loss when - on leaving the car - you hanker after such assistance for day-to-day mundanities like negotiating supermarket aisles. And don't get me started on pedestrian pavement behaviour. I'm the sort of jolly tyrant who would insist on such implants in every pedestrian. My tip to you. If you're looking for a 4x4 estate that says 'old money', is not brash and offers real class - get on the right side of an Outback and you won't look back.

Ford Focus Style ECOnetic 5 Door 1.5 TDCi

In putting the new Ford Focus into .....'focus'.. I compiled a list of the technological triumphs incorporated into one of the best selling cars in the world. I came to the heartening conclusion that there was little that this clever car was not capable of doing when it came to offering maximum safety, comfort and enjoyment. It's awe-inspiring what todays micro-processed mechanisms are capable of achieving, both at the touch of a button, or - as it were - a wave of Merlin's magic wand. We haven't yet arrived successfully at the driverless car despite considerable progress towards that end - but I would challenge a legion of the worlds best nerds to formulate better solutions to today's motoring requirements than are incorporated within this funkily stylish Focus from Ford. The exterior look has been sharpened to give extra 'kerb appeal' and inside too, it's most inviting. There's plenty of room for four (It will take five), seats are comfy and quality materials are used. The driving position is excellent too. The ÂŁ19,145 Style specification

is generous and includes a good sound system, air con., cruise control and more technical wizardry. Perhaps it's time for this old motoring dog to consign his stringback driving gloves and Stirling Moss driving shoes to the oblivion of the bottom drawer, for I can't resist the conclusion that the new Focus is straight out of the top drawer beyond my reach. It's not that I'm a technophobe - it's just that no longer do I understand. But maybe that's the point. Ford simply wants to make the driving experience a totally reassuring and easy matter. Something as dependable as the biggest granite block. In short, you can't knock it without coming away with a real headache. So - to the road. The 105PS diesel is a gem. It's exceptionally smooth, responsive, torquey and perfectly matched to the 'Ford slick' six gears. It will take you to 116mph - exhaling only 88 g/km of nastiness and yet return 83mpg. (Who needs electricity?). You can cruise all day at high speed and it's never tiring: wind, road and mechanical noise are very low. I was as eager as a beaver to find out if the new Focus really is the

best handling and riding car in its class and if the Ford Control Blade System of passive rear wheel steering is a case of the tail wagging the dog or the dog wagging the tail. I didn't try a slalom down to the supermarket but was curious to know how far I could go to induce a highland fling. I pressed on through bends (off road, of course.) in company with a guinea pig passenger, warning her to squeal before the tyres did. I have to say, squeals were there none of either sort, for the new suspension transforms the tightest bend into the semblance of a rest room at a gentleman's club. Smooth doesn't come close. This Focus, one feels, could not be coerced into dancing the fandango - even at the promise of a fresh litre of oil. When a darting hare challenged my ownership of the highway I was easily able to spare its long legs the ignominity of a rubber massage - truly this is a family car like no other: tomorrows car today. A cynical know all nay sayer commented that the Focus was a tad bland. He deserved the contemptuous reply I gave, for perfection - or as close as you can get to it - evokes in all but the meanest spirit, a sense of aesthetic rapture. As its name suggests, the Focus condenses todays motoring needs into one sharply defined statement that is as plain to perceive as a sharply etched representation of pure felicity.

Vauxhall Astra

T

he hatchback menu is a long established family favourite and when the newest hatchback from Britain's oldest car maker makes its appearance you know you're in for a treat. T h e Va u x h a l l philosophy has always been simple. Serve up the best ingredients and attend to details with a surgical eye for subtle improvements.

That's probably why Astra is a household name and why over twenty five per cent of British motorists have owned or driven an Astra: maybe because it appeals to people from all walks of life. It's a classy classless choice for everyone. The new car, which competes directly with Fords Focus and VW's Golf, takes a giant stride forward. On a technologically advanced

and stronger new platform, it is smaller outside yet bigger inside than the previous model and is lighter, faster and cleaner. Production at Ellesmere Port in Cheshire will secure 2,500 jobs well into the next decade. There's a choice of petrol or diesel power ranging from 100PS to 200PS - including the new 1.4litre (150PS) ECOTEC Direct Injection Turbo and the recently introduced 1.6 CDTi Whisper Diesel. Prices start at ÂŁ15,295. On the road it's zippy, smooth, lovely and quiet and thoroughly invigorating to drive. Chassis dynamics are nothing short of brilliant. It's way ahead of the competition and has you feeling as pleased as Punch or Judy:

Vauxhall certainly know the way to do it. Twerking boy racers doing do-nuts could even be surprised by its deft turn of speed and irresistibly precise road manners. The Astras vivacity will certainly appeal to those motorists with appetites as yet unjaded with mundanity. I tackled challenging twisty roads and felt as nimble as a darting squirrel with a set of LED lights attached to its twinkling tail. You'd have to be nuts not to want this Astra. And talking of lights, the amazing LED matrix headlights constantly adapt to every situation using a camera to adjust the beam. You will never dazzle oncoming vehicles. Rivals take note. Vauxhall has not so much pulled a fast one as been first to the line with a fashionable updating of a venerable concept. But wait. I've seen the future and it's the way ahead! It's truly aweinspiring what todays microprocessed mechanisms are capable of achieving both at the flick of a switch, or, as it were, a wave

of Merlin's magic wand. I'm talking here about 'On Star' the ground breaking connectivity technology that - at the push of a button - links you to a real person in a call centre who can download a destination to your sat nav, check your tyre pressures on the move, tell you where the nearest chip shop is - or just have a reassuring chat if you're lonely. Should dark forces manage to steal your treasure, your On Star controller on Mars (Luton really) can 'switch the car off'' and direct a SWAT team to capture the miscreant. More importantly, it's a guardian angel system that will alert the emergency services should an airbag be deployed. One motorist lost consciousness

after a collision - only to 'come round' to hear the On Star controller asking how he was. He thought it was the voice of God! We haven't yet arrived at the driverless car despite considerable progress towards that end but I would challenge a legion of the world's best nerds to formulate better solutions to todays motoring requirements than are incorporated within this funkily stylish Astra. I arrived at the facetious, but factually based, conclusion that the only thing the new Astra is not capable of doing is protecting you from a drone strike. But wait: I bet Vauxhalls boffins are already working on that.

Russell Grants Monthly Horoscopes October 2015 ARIES March 21st - April 20th You’ll have to make a choice between your personal and professional lives as October begins. It’s simply not realistic to spend every spare moment at work. You may not realise it, but you cease being productive when you focus for too long on certain tasks. Make more time for fun, even at the risk of irritating your boss. The New Moon on the 13th forces you to become more giving. Lately, you’ve been so focused on your own needs that you have forgotten those of your best friend, lover, or business partner. You’ll have a lovely opportunity to make amends during the second half of the month. Be sure to take your friend to a glittering social event. Keep the spotlight firmly trained on your partner. The Full Moon on the 27th puts a big beauty of a bonus in your bank balance. Use some of this money for a new computer or phone system.

TAURUS April 21st - May 21st Love is in the air throughout early October. If you’re single, you will meet someone special at a cultural, religious, or educational institution. Are you already in a relationship? Don’t be surprised when your partner gives you a beautiful gift. There has never been a better time for the two of you to go on an overseas trip. The New Moon on the 13th warns against accepting a work assignment. If this offer seems too good to be true, it probably is. The last thing you need is to get yourself into a state, trying to please an impossible client. Hold out for someone who has a better professional track record. Money from a lawsuit or court settlement will help make ends meet in the second half of the month. Good news about a contract or partnership is music to your ears on the 27th, when the Full Moon brings emotional and financial support.

GEMINI May 22nd - June 21st Resist the urge to pressure your romantic partner into making a decision on early October. If you keep pressing your point, a terrible argument will erupt. You won’t have much time for domestic chores during the first half of the month. It may be best to hire someone to clean your place, do repairs, or run some errands. The New Moon on the 13th will spark an intense flirtation. Although your playful banter is stimulating, you won’t want to pursue a serious relationship with this joker. Beware of devoting all of your time to a child or lover in the second half of the month, or friends will become resentful. Strive for a better balance in your private life. The Full Moon on the 27th will shed light on a secret. At long last, you will be able to understand why the object of your affection has been behaving in such a mysterious fashion.

CANCER June 22nd - July 23rd Don’t let family comment on your personal life in the early days of October. You need to set a firmer boundary here. Your needs are distinctly different from those of your relatives. The sooner they learn this, the easier it will be to get along. Use your organisational skills to help your best friend, lover, or business partner throughout the first half of the month. The two of you make a terrific team. The New Moon on the 13th forces you to adopt another approach where a household matter is concerned. It may be necessary to find another place to live. Alternatively, you might have to sell a property for less than you expected. Your love life takes an exciting turn during the second half of October. It will be virtually impossible to resist your allure. A group endeavour comes to a successful conclusion on the 27th, setting off a glamorous string of parties.

LEO July 24th - August 23rd Be honest about your feelings at the start of October, or problems will arise on the work front. If you find a colleague’s behaviour annoying, say so. You can’t afford to suffer in silence any longer. Don’t be surprised if you are transferred to a much better division on or around the 11th. The New Moon on the 13th forces you to apologise for an angry outburst. There’s no excuse for making cruel personal remarks, even when you’ve been provoked. The second half of the month finds you spending more quality time at home. Being surrounded by your family makes you feel grounded. True, your relatives can drive you up the wall at times, but they also make you feel loved and needed. Let them lavish you with affection. The Full Moon on the 27th finds you getting an award or promotion for a job well done. Get ready for your close up.

VIRGO August 24th - September 23rd Someone will pressure you to make a purchase you can’t afford in early October. Keep your money safe in the bank. You won’t get much sympathy from loved ones during the first half of the month, perhaps because you’re being too pushy. Try to relax and enjoy life. The minute you loosen up, good fortune will find you. You’ll be offered a well paid post on or around the 13th, courtesy of the New Moon. Think twice before accepting this offer, because there will be hidden strings attached. You may be better off making the best of existing resources. Your sex appeal is red hot during the second half of the month. Use it to your advantage. This is the perfect time to seduce someone who you’ve always fancied. The Full Moon on the 27th brings the successful conclusion of a legal matter. It looks like you’ll be awarded a handsome settlement.

LIBRA September 24th - October 23rd A power struggle between you and a relative will erupt in early October. You’ll have to set some firm boundaries if this relationship will continue. There is a good chance you might have to part ways, thanks to your family member’s insistence on poking their nose into your private business. Friends and relatives will be very upset by this turn of events, but it can’t be helped. The New Moon on the 13th marks an unexpected conflict with someone you thought was an ally. No matter how you try to explain your actions, you will be painted as a villain. Take this opportunity to go off on your own and think about your options. It may be time to put your own needs first, instead of waiting on everybody else. Fortunately, the Full Moon on the 27th poses a wonderful opportunity to satisfy your sensual side. Go for a spa treatment or enjoy a gourmet meal.

SCORPIO October 24th - November 22nd Early October finds you engaged in a pointless argument with an authority figure. Save yourself valuable time and energy by walking away from this conflict. You’ll have to abide by some pointless rules and regulations, but it can’t be helped. Fortunately, an influential friend will come to your rescue at the eleventh hour. Be sure to send a lavish gift as thanks for this gesture. The New Moon on the 13th makes it difficult to rest and relax. You’ll have to set some firm boundaries with colleagues who think they can invade your privacy whenever they want. Put a bold plan into action on the 16th. A business executive will be impressed by your initiative and offer you a position in their organisation. The Full Moon on the 27th finds you falling deeper in love with the object of your affection. This is a great time to give your partner a beautiful gift that symbolises your devotion.

SAGITTARIUS November 23rd - December 21st The opening days of October are ideal for self promotion. Whether you’re trying to get a first date or courting a potential client, draw attention to your accomplishments. It will be difficult to get help from family on the 7th, when you’ll be bogged down with work responsibilities. Relatives and roommates will resist your efforts to redistribute jobs. Things will go more smoothly on the 11th, when your powers of persuasion are at an all time high. The New Moon on the 13th warns against cancelling a social engagement. Make an extra effort to attend a birthday celebration or an anniversary party, or you will cause great offense. The Full Moon on the 27th marks the successful culmination of a job. People will be very impressed with the results. Prepare for an uptick in business as October turns to November. It may be necessary to hire more staff to keep up with all of the orders.

CAPRICORN December 22nd - January 20th Work will be a tremendous source of pressure at the beginning of October. It’s important to have an outlet for your anxieties. Try to get a little exercise each day, even if it’s only taking a brisk walk at lunch. Your boss will be able to help if you explain your frustrations. You’ll have a marvellous opportunity to uplift and inspire people on the 11th, so long as you push past your initial shyness. The New Moon on the 13th attracts a job assignment that sounds too good to be true. You’re better off turning down this offer, as it will involve a lot of work for very little pay. The second half of October will be difficult for work, but wonderful for love. If you’re single, sign up for an advanced course on your favourite subject. You’re sure to meet someone special this way. The Full Moon on the 27th brings favourable publicity for a creative project.

AQUARIUS January 21st - February 19th Vicious rumours will be circulating in early October. Don’t jump to any conclusions; wait for the facts to arrive. Relationships could get stressed and strained around the 11th, due to a demanding social schedule. You might want to opt to stay away from big crowds on this day, spending time on a solitary hobby instead. Friends will make a lot of demands on you at this time and it’s important to maintain your sanity. The New Moon on the 13th brings disappointing news about a legal matter. It looks like you’ll have to cut your losses. Dwelling on your heartache will only compound the problem. Fortunately, an attentive lover is poised to relieve you of some heavy burdens during the second half of October. The Full Moon on the 27th brings a satisfying conclusion to a household or family matter. This is a great time to buy or sell property.

PISCES February 20th - March 20th You’ll be very busy with work during the beginning of October. Unfortunately, some friends will resent your absence from parties and get togethers. To add insult to injury, a romantic partner expresses dismay at your jam packed schedule. No matter what you do, it seems to disappoint someone. Your powers of persuasion will be strong on the 11th. This is a good time to explain the situation to your nearest and dearest. The New Moon on the 13th sparks a power struggle over joint finances. You might have to enlist the aid of a lawyer to get money that is due to you. Patience and persistence will win the day. Just keep filling out paperwork and showing up to hearings. Eventually, you will get restitution. The second half of the month is ideal for scheduling a long distance trip. Be sure to check your messages throughout the day on the 27th, when the Full Moon will bring exciting news.

FORMULA E TESTING AT DONINGTON PARK

Jacques Villeneuve prepares for testing.

F1 WORLD CHAMPION JOINS RANKS FOR SECOND SEASON The Formula E teams returned to their home circuit, Donington Park, for testing ahead of the 2015-16 season. For the second season of the FIA’s allelectric series, which begins in Beijing on October 17, Formula E has become an open championship allowing manufacturers to pursue their own inhouse innovations, beginning with the development of bespoke powertrains. Of the 10 teams, eight will utilise their own powertrains whilst Dragon Racing will partner with Venturi to run the French manufacturer’s powertrain and the re-named Team Aguri will remain with season one’s SRT01-e package. Formula E has attracted some top talents from the world of sports cars and several drivers that have lost their seats in Formula 1, but for its second year 1997 Formula 1 World Champion Jacques Villeneuve has joined the ranks, driving alongside Stephane Sarrazin at Venturi. “Last season, each time I met drivers from Formula E they were saying it is really a very interesting

championship,” said Villeneuve. “This is the first time in several years that I will participate in a full championship. I am excited because the atmosphere, while working alongside the Venturi team, is great and that has a very big influence. Also, I know Stephane Sarrazin well, we trust each other." Villeneuve won the Indy 500 in 1995 before switching to Formula 1, driving for Williams, BAR, Sauber and Renault and taking 11 victories in ten seasons. He replaces another ex-F1 star, Nick Heidfeld, who switches to partner Bruno Senna at Mahindra Racing. Sebastian Buemi, who dominated practice twelve months ago, finished the inaugural season just one point behind champion Nelson Piquet Jr. He was quickest on the first day of testing, for season two, with a time of 1 minute 32.095 seconds in his e.dams Renault. The top four in the first session were all race winners in the first Formula E season, Buemi followed by Lucas di Grassi (ABT), Nicloas Prost (e.dams) and Virgin Racing’s Sam Bird. The following day Buemi lowered Donington’s Formula E lap record, set in the penultimate session of 2014, with a time of 1:31.050, using the full qualifying mode of 200kW to set his time.“I think we could go even quicker,” said Buemi. “I’m quite happy but we are really only at the start of the new package. Now we need to work on the details of the package. We could do quite a bit on the car and the car is a bit easier to drive, the stability is better, the brakes are better. I see some good potential, we just need to extract it from the car.” Nick Heidfeld improved his time by four seconds on day two. He believes the different approaches the team have to powertrain development will make for an interesting season. “I think we have everything from no gears up to four gears and some people have two engines and some have one,” said Heidfeld. “When the regulations are opened it’s very

48 Derbyshire Guardian | Issue 33 interesting, unlike other series where the regulations are the same for a long time and everybody arrives at the perfect solution. Here it’s open, and it’s new, and it’s cool to see so many different approaches. I’m excited to be here because, like last year, again we don’t know what to expect.” The following week Daniel Abt (ABT) took another 0.8 seconds off the lap record, on the first day, before team mate di Grassi became to first driver below 1 minute 30 seconds (1:29.920) the following day. “I have to say that going for the time is not as important as working on the reliability of the car,” said di Grassi. “Of course working on the performance is important, but we know that performance here doesn’t necessarily translate to what we will see at the other tracks.” Jacques Villeneuve as beginning to find his feet, after a quiet first week. He leapt to fourth , just 1 second off Abt’s pace in session three and was 1.5 seconds off di Grassi’s lap record the following day. The weather turned inclement for the final week of testing, session five was cold and windy, heavy rain fell the following day. Sam Bird and Nicolas Prost set the quickest times, both in the mid 1.30s. The second season is provisionally a ten-race championship taking in city centres around the world to underline the series’ green credentials. The series begins in Beijing, in October, and concludes, again, in London’s Battersea Park on a date yet to be finalised.

CLASSIC RACING AT DONINGTON Jaguar Saloon and GT returnee Thomas Barclay picked up two wins as the series visited Donington Park with the Classic Sports Car Club. Barclay took a year out to concentrate on work commitments, but picked up where he left off, having won both races here two years ago. Sam Clarke Jr (XJS) took pole on his first visit to Donington, but then slipped to fourth after a poor start. Barclay (4200 Coupe) opened up a good lead while Clarke recovered to take second, some 13 seconds adrift. Race two produced a thrilling battle as it was Barclay’s turn to drop to fourth after running wide on lap two. David Howard and James Ramm headed Clarke as Barclay recovered. Clarke took the lead on lap five with Barclay taking second two laps later and then set about closing the gap to the new leader. Barclay took the lead heading into the chicane on lap 8, but Clarke pushed him all the way to the flag. The winning margin was just threetenths of a second with a gap of almost five seconds back to Ramm and Howard who also enjoyed a close race. David Tomlin also took a double on his return to the Pirelli Ferrari Classic series. Tomlin has been enjoying success with the Historic Sports Car Club’s 70s Roadsports series, but dominated on his return to the Ferraris. He lost out at the start, from pole as the 328s of Gary Culver and Ashover’s Jim Cartwright beat him to the first turn, but he fought his way back into the lead in his 308. Tomlin won by 2 seconds from Culver, but Cartwright was handed penalties totalling 45 seconds, for not respecting track limits, which dropped him from third to seventh. Cartwright was quick off the line in race two to take an early lead, before Tomlin made his move, down the Craner Curves, on lap 3. Cartwright again received a black and white flag warning for exceeding track limits, but no penalties so he was able to hang on to his second place. Dad, Nick Cartwright took fourth place in both events. Danny Winstanley had a great afternoon in his Caterham R300. He started the Magnificent Sevens (Group 2) race last, from the pitlane, and carved his way through the field to win by six seconds, even when a late safety car period bunched the field behind him. He had earlier won the Sports v Saloons race by a complete lap from Simon Smith’s Caterham with Neil Hinson a further lap behind in third. James and Alan Broad, of Derby, took a class win in their Porsche Boxster, while James Clare took the class win for the Dunlop Puma Cup. Success penalties did not stop Fabio Randaccio and James Affleck from winning the New Millenium

Affleck made a slow start from pole position, but Randaccio powered past Gary Wardle’s Ginetta G50, late in the race, to claim another win. Richard Woods (Ford Focus) repeated his Tin Tops win from twelve months ago after early leader Paul Mensley (Focus) hit oil and was forced to retire. The spillage brought an early end to the race. Matt Spark emerged victorious in the Magnificent Sevens (Group 1) race, by half a second from John and Alex Saunders.

REPTON ENGINE BUILDER TO SUPPLY FIA CHAMPIONSHIPS T

he FIA has selected Repton-based engine manufacturer Gibson Technology as the single engine supplier for their Le Mans Prototype LMP2 sportscar class from 2017 to 2020. Gibson will develop and manufacture a new 4.2 Litre V8 engine, supplying LMP2 teams in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC), the Le Mans 24 Hours and the European Le Mans Series, together with the Asian Le Mans Series from 2019 onwards. Gibson race engines have been highly successful in one make formulae over many years, most recently in the prestigious Formula Renault 3.5 Series. In the world of endurance racing the Gibson-Nissan developed VK45 engines have achieved great success with LMP2 teams, taking notable class victories in the Le Mans 24 Hours in recent years. This vast experience ensures that Gibson is well equipped to support many race series worldwide. “Gibson is extremely privileged to have been chosen as the engine manufacturer to the new LMP2 series and it is a testament to our workforce and the products they have produced over many years.” says John Manchester, Gibson Technology Operations Director. “Gibson has over 20 years experience supplying engines for single make racing series and we are confident that we can make a valuable contribution in helping, what is already a flourishing series, become an even more successful sportscar racing category.” The company was founded by Bill Gibson, in 1981,

“Gibson has over 20 years experience supplying engines for single make racing series and we are confident that we can make a valuable contribution in helping, what is already a flourishing series, become an even more successful sportscar racing category.”

Zytek LMP2 cars and engines have enjoyed many successes. as Zytek and acquired Alan Smith Racing in 1987 in order to expand its motorsports involvement. The company initially supported the Jordan team in Formula 3000 before choosing to concentrate on engine development. Zytek would return to running a motorsports team in 2004 when the company entered the Le Mans Endurance Series with their first sports car, the Zytek 04S, which was able to finish second in the team championship in 2005 due to two overall victories. Following the separation of the Zytek Group of companies during 2014, Zytek Engineering rebranded to Gibson Technology Limited, in 2014, while Zytek Automotive, based in Lichfield, is now wholly owned by German company Continental AG. Gibson-Nissan 015S sportscars were triumphant in the LMP2 class in the recent Four Hours of Le Castellet , the French round of the European Le Mans Series. , with victory for Greaves Motorsport and third for Jota Sport. Following their victory at Austria’s Red Bull Ring in July, Harry Tincknell put the Jota Sport team on pole for the French race. The chequered flag saw the Jota Gibson 015S take victory over Greaves by 25 seconds, but in a twist of events Jota received a post race penalty for Filipe Albuquerque exceeding his allocated driver time, which gave Greaves Motorsport the victory and dropped Jota down to third. To add to Gibson’s success, second and fourth places in LMP2 were taken by AF Racing, powered by Gibson-Nissan engine. The final round of the European Le Mans Series is at Estoril, in October, with just one point now separating Jota Sport at the top of the championship table from Greaves Motorsport.

RAMS BACK IN LOCAL OWNERSHIP MEL MORRIS TARGETS PREMIERSHIP SUSTAINABILITY

D

erby entrepreneur Mel Morris has taken sole control of Derby County FC, bringing the club back into local ownership for the first time since the beginning of 2008. His aim is not only taking Derby County back to the Barclays Premier League, but making sure that they can remain there. Mr Morris is keen to stress that he does not see the club as his property, that he is merely the present custodian. He recognises that he is just one stakeholder of many thousand, including all the fans and sponsors, and hopes to engage with them as the club moves forward. The Littleover businessman, who made his fortune backing the firm behind mobile gaming app Candy Crush Saga, re-invested in the club in May 2014, taking a 22 per cent holding following the Sky Bet Championship play-off final against QPR at Wembley. Mr Morris has now bought the remaining 78 per cent of shares from American Partners LLP for undisclosed sum, becoming sole owner of the club. The acquisition process began in May this year when he assumed the position as club chairman. “Whilst I firmly believe that the club's ownership is very much a tertiary concern to most fans,” said Morris, a life-long Derby fan. “I hope together we can help steer this club back into a sustainable place in the Premier League. We have many of the key components in place, but I am conscious that we must all commit our total support in pursuit of this goal, which I know is shared by all of us, as fans of

this great football club. “I wish to pay tribute to the North American Ownership group, who collectively provided the finance and leadership stability the club needed following the traumatic times which followed the 2007-08 season in the Premier League. “They have been terrific to work with and I am sure they will continue to follow the Rams well into the future.” Mr Morris first invested in Derby County in 2006, part of a consortium led by Peter Gadsby, becoming a director as the group saved the Rams from crippling debts of around £52 million. The board stepped down, in January 2008, when North American Derby Partners LP bought the club. Mr Morris believes his predecessors brought finance and stability at a time when it was needed. “The club needed finance at that time and that is something they provided,” he said. “They also provided stability with the two separate waves of investment and that was necessary to bring about a method of operation that was going to restore the finances and the balance sheet which was needed to turn the club into a proper operation. That was one of the reasons why I was able to invest last year because it was relatively simple to do the due diligence to understand how the club was being run.” “I have had 14 months to get to this point with the club and that strategy made the whole process easier. The Americans deserve a huge amount of credit for the work they did, work that maybe has not had the credit that it deserves. “Having Sam Rush come on

New Derby County owner Mel Morris. (photo: Andy Clarke) board has seen a big turnaround for this club. I wanted to be involved and I wanted to get on board to try and help this club get back to where it belongs and that’s in the Premier League.” Looking ahead, Derby’s new owner plans to invite and meet fans, together with the President & Chief Executive Sam Rush and the coaching teams, to deliver a ‘transparent’ look ahead to the future of the club. Morris believes it is important the club’s fan base is heavily involved in the future of the club. “We need to be a lot more transparent in how we operate.

RAMS SEASON FINALLY UNDERWAY >> Continues from back page skipper Chris Baird was carried off with a head injury, Daniel Johnson pulled one back no less than 13 minutes into stoppage time. It was good to lay the ghost of last season’s dismal finale to rest with a 1-0 win at Reading in midweek. It was a gritty performance as Reading, reduced to ten men with Orlando Sa’s dismissal just before half time, closed ranks behind the ball to make life difficult for the Rams. Butterfield found Martin, captain in Baird’s absence, who laid on the chance for Tom Ince to score the game’s only goal from twelve yards. Carson returned and this was the Rams first clean sheet since the opening day of the season. Another followed in the goalless draw at home to Burnley, a dour contest of few chances against

likely promotion rivals. However, the game could have gone either way with Sam Vokes missing clear chances for Burnley while Richard Keogh twice went close with headers from corners and Tom Heaton just got a finger to Chris Martin’s 25 yard drive. With teams coming to the iPro determined not to give the Rams room to play their natural game, away fixtures are becoming more profitable although it took a long time to make headway at MK Dons. The Dons were smarting from a 6-0 Capital One Cup dubbing at the hands of Southampton, but it was they who took the game to the Rams. Scott Carson made two outstanding reflex saves to keep the Rams in the game at the break. It was against the run of play that Andreas Weimann’s low cross picked out Johnson on the edge of

the box. The new boy’s first time, low, left foot drive flashed inside the right-hand upright for his first Rams’ goal. Josh Murphy’s reply was a well-deserved reward for the Dons’ endeavour, but Derby then began to look more like a side with ambition and much of the late stages of the game was in the Dons’ half. The Rams began creating chances and a glorious shot from Russell was pushed wide by Martin, in the Dons’ goal. With just two minutes on the clock, Jeff Hendrick put Ince through on the left and his low ball across the face of the goal was turned in by Darren Bent (on for Chris Martin) from two yards to open his account for the season. It was still touch and go. After a brilliant afternoon, Carson almost turned the ball into his own net when he misjudged a late corner,

That’s about what we are trying to achieve, how we are going about doing that and that will be the start of a series of meetings throughout the season. “We plan to get fans in and get them to understand the preparation that we put into games. If they want to understand the finances better then we will show them our finances, we have got nothing to hide. This club is in the best financial shape of any club in the Championship.” Despite the Rams having a difficult start to the season, Morris is not concerned, insisting that it is his job to de-stress stressful

but Weimann was there to clear off the line. Ince then picked up on a sloppy MK Dons throw in to seal the third win of the season with virtually the final kick of the game. “We were much better in the second half which was obviously pleasing because we needed to improve,” Paul Clement told the Rams website. “However, we had that cutting edge today with our finishing. The third goal in the dying seconds was well finished but I think it flattered us in terms of the score line. “There were, as you would expect, a few nervous periods as they pushed for an equaliser in added time and I think we had that bit of luck we needed today. Having not played very well we’ve picked up a very good three points.” Ten points from twelve has moved the Rams, at the time of writing, up to eighth in the table, just one point away from the top six. “Things are looking more positive for us now,” says Clement, “and we’re unbeaten in four games. Now we want to finish off this block of games before the international break with a win in front of our home fans.”

situations. He will remain objective throughout his time at the club as he looks to achieve his three-year plan. “My head and heart are in balance. I used to be a lunatic because I couldn’t cope with the stress of it all,” he says. “Last time I was involved, I really did get very emotional about how we were performing and over time you become more philosophical about it all - the world doesn’t end on the back of one loss or one bad performance. I try and be objective. “I have been asked before what the role of the Chairman is and

the role is to de-stress the club when it gets stressed and that’s something I can’t do if I am ranting and raving every time a goal goes against us. “There is a lot of things that we have to consider. I would love to say that we are going to get promoted this season, but I have a three-year plan that began in May last year and the aim is to pull it off in that time frame.” The club went on to say that its executive team will continue to be managed by chief executive Sam Rush and that a new board of directors will be announced in due course.

Scott Carson kept the Rams in the game at MK Dons.

MARTIN PASSES 50-GOAL MILESTONE

C

hris Martin reached his 50goal milestone for Derby County with a superb effort that just oozed class. It showed why Martin is one of the most feared strikers in the Championship and attracted attention from other clubs in the summer. Sadly it was to be a high point of the home game with Leeds United and celebrations would be muted after the Rams slipped to their first defeat of the season. Martin has always maintained that getting that first victory was more importantww. “For me, it's just the next goal and the next win for the team,” he said ahead of the Leeds game. "It is nice to get that kind of recognition but the most important thing is getting that first win." George Thorne picked out Martin on the edge of the Leeds box and Martin shaped to shoot with his right foot. Liam Copper

from Norwich City in February 2013, for a one-month loan period, coming on at half-time as the Rams went down 2-1 to Watford. His first goal came when Derby beat Leicester City 2-1 in the final game of the initial loan spell, but then his stay was extended until the end of the season. A further goal came in the victory over Peterborough. Nigel Clough completed Martin’s permanent move to Derby in the summer, on a free-transfer, a two-year deal with a third year option. Three league and three league cup goals followed under Clough before Steve McClaren became the new manager. Martin’s next goal was his 50th league goal also against Leeds United as the Rams won 3-1 and he then hit a purple patch in December. A goal a-piece in the wins over Wigan Athletic and Middlesbrough were followed with his first league hat-trick in the 5-1 defeat of Blackpool on

“For me, it's just the next goal and the next win for the team, it is nice to get that kind of recognition but the most important thing is getting that first win." committed to block the shot, but Martin turned the ball back past the helpless defender, driving in his shot, left-footed, just inside the post and out of reach of Silvestri in the Leeds goal. It was Martin’s second goal of the campaign, his first earned a point against Charlton, and shows a return to the form that made him the Rams leading scorer for the past two seasons. As the season resumed, following the international break, Martin struck twice as the Rams recorded their first victory of the season at Preston. Johnny Russell’s perfectly weighted ball found Martin, on the blind-side of the Preston defence, to fire home the opener from close range. Martin then added a second direct from a free-kick into the top left-hand corner of the net. Martin had first arrived at Derby,

7th December. Martin has played his best football with Derby County. Much of his early career was spent out on loan and his confidence came from the knowledge that his talent was valued at Derby. His physical presence and ability to hold the ball up made him a key player for Derby in 2013-14 as the side finished third in the table and his 25-goal haul made him an instrumental player in their promotion challenge. He stepped up when it really mattered with dramatic late winners in the league campaign against Yeovil Town and AFC Bournemouth and key goals in the play-off semi-finals against Brighton and Hove Albion. At the end of the season, Martin made his international debut for Scotland as a substitute in their international friendly with

Chris Martin is one of the most feared strikers in the Championship. Nigeria. He now has six Scottish caps, including one start in the friendly with England. Martin signed a new, long-term, contract with Derby in August 2014 and went on to score 21 times during the 2014-15 season, but hamstring injury ruled him out of action for much of the second half of the season. By

the time he returned the Rams had taken a dramatic dip in form and two late season goals could not help to halt the slide out of the top six. Martin still finished as Derby’s leading goal scorer for

the second season in a row. The disappointment of the past two campaigns will be a big incentive for Chris Martin to help the Rams get the job done this term. Even with the presence of

Darren Bent in the squad, Martin has, so far, been the preferred target man, and with goals like the one against Leeds in his locker, he should be around for a long time to come.

DAVE MACKAY MEMORIAL UNVEILED

It is hoped the Dave Mackay tribute will inspire Rams players now and in the future.

D

erby County have honoured one of their greatest legends when Isobel Mackay unveiled a black granite memorial to her late husband, Dave Mackay. As the shroud fell away, Mrs Mackay kissed her fingers and then put them to the lips of her husband’s figure, which is located next to the players entrance outside the iPro Stadium. The memorial depicts Dave Mackay, the Rams captain, running onto the pitch clutching a football, a familiar scene during his three seasons with the Rams between 1968 and 1971. Dave Mackay was in the twilight of his career when Brian Clough persuaded him to join Derby County, but his inspiration galvanised the team of talented youngsters who went on to have extraordinary success. Following Dave’s departure, Clough’s side won the League Championship in 1972, but the football world was shocked when Clough and assistant Peter Taylor resigned late in 1973. Mackay was the only character, at the time, big enough to replace Clough and Taylor, which he did by winning over the doubters and guiding the Rams to a second league title in 1975. Mrs Mackay said she was thrilled at the tribute, and recalled how he came to play for the Rams. “Dave came home from training at Tottenham and said ‘There’s been a change of plan, I’ve signed for Derby County.” Dave was considering a return to his first club, Heart of Midlothian, as his time at Tottenham Hotspur had come to an end, but Brian Clough wanted Mackay to lead his young team at Derby. “Derby who?” Mrs Mackay had replied, “I’ve never heard of them!” Dave promptly led the Rams to the Division 2 championship title and helped establish them as a force in the top flight during his three years at the Baseball Ground. “David was a winner at three clubs,” said Mrs Mackay, “Heart of Midlothian, Tottenham Hotspur and Derby County. For the smallest of those clubs, Derby County, to honour David this way is just wonderful.”

Isobel Mackay was thrilled with the tribute to her late husband.

Mrs Mackay was joined by members of her family at the unveiling, which took place six months after he passed away. Also present were ten former Rams stars who were part of Mackay’s Derby County side which won the League Championship in 1974-5. These included Alan Hinton who flew over, especially for the event , from his home in Seattle and Bruce Rioch, leading scorer in the title-winning season, who travelled up from Cornwall. Also present was Willie Carlin, who played alongside Mackay at Derby, and Charlie George, signed to the Rams by Mackay in the summer of ’75. Derby County commissioned Stoke-based artist Andrew Edwards to produce the one and a quarter life size statue of Mackay. He has an outstanding reputation within his industry and has worked with the club over the years to create the Brian Clough and Peter Taylor statue and the Steve Bloomer bust. “Following Dave’s funeral, in March, we began dialogue with his family and, with their blessing, the wheels were put in motion to create this fitting tribute,” said John Vicars, Derby County’s Chief Operating Officer. “We commissioned the artist Andy Edwards, who in my view is the best in the business, and utilised the skills of Garry McBride, Chairman of Evans Concrete, who cast the statue for us.” Roy McFarland was just 20 years old when Dave Mackay arrived at Derby, but they formed a formidable partnership in the Rams defence. Former Rams striker ‘King’ Kevin Hector said Mackay’s arrival was a surprise, but he inspired the players throughout the side. “When we saw him come into the dressing room, on the first day, we couldn’t believe it, a tremendous inspiration to all of us,” said Kevin. “It was the way he played, Dave wanted to win every game. He installed it into them to be winners and that’s what we did.” Even though Mackay returned to take over a championship-winning team, Kevin said he made some great signings to improve the squad. “The team was there, but the signings that Dave made, Bruce Rioch, Charlie George, Frannie Lee, Rod Thomas, he brought in the players what he needed to win another championship.”

Kevin Hector (left) and Roy McFarland admire the tribute to Dave Mackay.

RAMS THE BIG SPENDERS ON DEADLINE DAY

Record signing Bradley Johnson - Photos: Andy Clarke

D

erby County spent £10 million in the transfer market as they faced a midfield injury crisis and looked for their first win of the season. They made two late forays into the transfer market to sign Jacob Butterfield and Bradley Johnson on transfer deadline day. After a succession of failed bids to sign Butterfield from Huddersfield Town, the Rams finally got their man for a fee thought to be around £4 million. The signing of Johnson, from Norwich City, came as more of a surprise, with the deal completed just minutes before the transfer window closed. It is believed that Derby County had to pay a club record of £6 million.

everything is set up here to be a Premier League club," said the 25-year-old after putting pen to paper on a four-year deal. Butterfield had one season at Huddersfield, making 45 league appearances and scoring six goals. Player of the Year at Huddersfield, Butterfield has worked hard to recover from an anterior cruciate ligament injury, the same as that which ruled out George Thorne for most of last season and Will Hughes for this. “My knee injury really set me back two or three years in my career,” said Butterfield. “It took me two years to really get over that and get some sort of form back and some rhythm in my play. That came last year at Huddersfield and I really produced the kind of performances that I had done

“I have played in the Premier League and I have also got experience of getting out of this league and I’m hoping that will be valuable in helping getting the club getting promoted.” The deals, the eighth and ninth of the summer, took Derby County’s summer spend in the market to £20 million, a sign of the club’s intentions to build on an already talented squad as they target a serious push for promotion. There can be little doubt that Mel Morris, who would be announced as the club’s new owner two days later, has had a profound influence on the summer’s dealings. He has goals he wants to achieve and will want to maximise his return on his already considerable investment. Jacob Butterfield was delighted to become Paul Clement’s eighth signing of the summer. “You can see why this club is one of the favourites for promotion and

before that injury. Last year was, personally, a very good one for me, I enjoyed it at Huddersfield, but I felt that this was the right opportunity for me at this stage.” Butterfield was delighted that the Rams’ deal had been completed, after weeks of press speculation. “The way they have gone about their business and the amount effort the club has put in to get me here has been very impressive and they convinced me that this would be a really good fit for me. I just can’t wait to get into the games now and pull on a Derby shirt.” Bradley Johnson says that he did not have to think twice about joining Derby County after becoming the club’s record

Jacob Butterfield signing. “There was no second thoughts about coming down here and from walking around the place, I knew that this was where I wanted to be,” he said after signing a four-year deal. Johnson played a key role in Norwich City’s return to the Premiership last season, but the 28-year-old midfielder found himself on the sidelines this term. He now hopes that his experience will prove to be valuable as Derby look to return to the top flight. “It wasn’t a hard decision for me to come here,” Johnson added. “The interest the club showed in me, first of all to get me down here, was incredible and the facilities and the ambition that the club are showing, to try and get into the Premier League, made the decision even easier. I have played in the Premier League and I have also got experience of getting out of this league and I’m hoping that will be valuable in helping getting the club getting promoted.” With the signings coming early in the international break, Butterfield and Johnson had a little time to get used to their new surroundings. It also helped that, as new boys, they knew each other from Butterfield’s time at Norwich. With Paul Clement’s continued injury crisis in midfield, both made the starting line-up when the season resumed at Preston. Johnny Russell has also signed a new contract that keeps the Scottish international at the iPro until the summer of 2018. Johnny has opened the season in fine form, scoring vital equalisers in the draws with Middlesbrough and Birmingham City before providing the perfect ball for Chris Martin to open the scoring at Preston. “Johnny Russell has had a very good start to the season and he has earned his new deal,” said Paul Clement. “He performed well in pre-season and it’s pleasing that he has taken that form into the season itself. Johnny

continually shows a willingness to learn and improve, which is always pleasing to see. Johnny is a popular member of the dressing room and he’s also someone that the fans regard very highly, so it’s pleasing to see him commit his future by signing the contract we put to him.” Paul Clement has added Kevin

Phillips to the Derby County backroom staff as assistant coach. The former England international striker has joined Derby from Leicester City, where he acted as first team coach under Nigel Pearson and, more recently, Claudio Ranieri. Phillips is the third new face on the coaching staff since Clement

took over as Derby’s Head Coach in June. John Peacock left the Football Association to join Clement’s coaching staff ahead of the start of pre-season training, while former Switzerland international Pascal Zuberbuhler also arrived as goalkeeping coach.

RAMS SEASON FINALLY UNDERWAY

Paul Clement has had plenty of selection juggling to do.

D

erby County finally got their season underway, at the sixth attempt, with a win at Preston North End. They swiftly followed with another victory at Reading, but these came after the international break, two weeks in which to reflect on the disappointment of defeat at home to Leeds United, while still looking for that first win of the campaign. So far the Rams have only fired in short bursts, not helped when,

Va p o u ro u n d M A G A Z I N E

one-by-one, all those that began the campaign as recognised midfielders have been side-lined and head coach Paul Clement has had a baptism of fire in trying to juggle his selections. The Rams went in, at half time, to the sound of boos with Leeds going ahead in the dying moments of the first half. Leeds were good value for their lead as Derby’s performance rarely crept above poor. What a transformation, then, as

the ‘old Rams’ emerged for the second half, Clement’s scalding ringing in their ears, playing the fast, flowing football that has become a trademark of the Rams style of football. Within two minutes George Thorne found Chris Martin on the edge of the box and the striker will score few better goals in his career. Frustratingly, then, they lost momentum and allowed Leeds to creep back into the game, Chris Wood delivering the killer

blow just minutes before the final whistle. Whilst many of the squad were away on international duty, it became a distraction for the fans when Derby spent big on transfer deadline day and then announced that Mel Morris had taken full control of the club two days later. Signs of determination and ambition, Derby will be there or thereabouts come May, but they still needed a win, let alone to do it consistently in order to

mount that sustained challenge. Martin, now fully recovered from the hamstring injury that kept him out for a long period last season, is looking sharp and his double strike against Preston showed he is in good form. Both new boys, Jacob Butterfield and Bradley Johnson, were included in the starting line-up and both made good contributions in midfield. The surprise inclusion was that of Lee Grant in goal, replacing Scott Carson. Paul Clement said no

blame was attached to Carson for the Leeds defeat. The new head coach does seem to like squad rotation to the full, although Richard Keogh’s good form, now that he has relinquished the captain’s armband, has kept Alex Pearce on the bench. Preston made Derby dig deep in the second half and, with the Rams down to ten men after >> Continues on page 50
