SALOMON SKI GOGGLE:
INTRODUCTION In 2011, Salomon introduced the X-TEND concept in goggles, changing the trajectory of goggle design and innovation. This new trajectory was spurred by three things: • First, by reducing the thickness of the frame, and increasing the perimeter, X-TEND increased the field of vision skiers can get from their goggles. • Second, Salomon’s Custom Frame technology utilized a softer inner membrane to allow the goggle to precisely and comfortably adjust to the specific shape of a person’s face. • Third, Salomon introduced Zeiss branded lenses for superior optic quality and improved durability.
Today the trend continues with constant innovations and fine tuning to every frame and goggle we create. The content remains the same, greater field of vision, precise fit, and superior optic quality. Our focus moving forward is to develop optical expertise and create innovation in every model and every new goggle we make.

WHAT DO WE NEED . PROTECTION FROM? SALOMON GOGGLES PROTECT THE EYES FROM WIND, COLD, SNOW, AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, THE SUN. SUNLIGHT IS MADE UP OF THREE TYPES OF RAYS: ULTRAVIOLET, VISIBLE light, AND Infrared. Ultraviolet (U.V.) Ultraviolet rays are invisible radiation that are the most dangerous types of rays in terms of overexposure. While we tend to know this in regards to our skin, we forget it when it comes to our eyes.
FW15 Goggle Training Manual | optical expertise
Ultraviolet rays reach the eyes either directly or by reflection. By comparison, water reflects 5-10% of the sun’s UV rays, sand reflects 20% and snow reflects 85%. Moreover, with altitude, that quantity increases by 10% with every 1,000 meters of elevation gain.
100%
WHAT DAMAGE DO UV RAYS DO? The cells in the eye are constantly regenerating. But if they are exposed to too much UV, they become vulnerable. Some examples of how eyes are harmed through overexposure to UV are: • Sun-burnt eyelids • Inflammation of the sclera (mucous membrane) • Deterioration of the cornea Optic nerve Sclera Cornea

OPTICAL EXPERTISE: OPTIC PROTECTION
WHAT DO WE NEED . PROTECTION FROM? VISIBLE LIGHT (V.L.) Our eyes are designed to detect visible light waves, the only electromagnetic waves we can see. They make up the colors of the rainbow, with each color having a different wavelength. Red has the longest, and violet has the shortest. Combine all the waves, and they make white light. Visible light is not dangerous by itself, but it causes glare, which can tire the eyes and lead to accidents.
INFRARED (I.R.) Infrared rays are part of the sun’s radiation. Normal infrared rays pose no danger to the eyes, they are simply a caloric flow that causes heat.
UV protection relates solely to the quality of the lenses, not to their color. Contrary to popular opinion, dark glasses do not offer any greater protection from the sun’s rays than any other color of lens. If they have no effective UV filter, dark glasses can actually be more harmful. This is because when the eye is covered with dark lens, the pupil dilates to allow more light in, which in turn would allow more UV light to penetrate the eye.

OPTICAL EXPERTISE: SALOMON INNOVATIVE LENS SOLUTION
OPTICAL QUALITY GUARANTEE ALL SALOMON LENSES FILTER 100% OF THE SUN’S UV RAYS, FOR COMPLETE EYE PROTECTION.
Salomon lenses are all guaranteed Optic Class 1, the best quality in the goggle market. Optic Class 1 means the lowest amount of distortion, creating better optic precision during skiing. Using high-end materials and lens geometry, Salomon lenses reduce prismatic effects found in many other lenses. Less vision distortion means less eye fatigue, and better perception of obstacles and dangers.
Salomon lenses all have a visual light transmission rating or VLT. This refers to the amount of visible light that can pass through a lens. For example, a lens with a VLT of 12% allows roughly 12% of visible light to pass through the lens (therefore blocking 88% of visible light). In Europe, the level of VLT is categorized into five classes, from 0–4. Salomon Innovative Lens Solution (S.I.L.S.) is our assurance of the best quality lens available at every price point.
FW15 Goggle Training Manual | optical expertise
Salomon lenses all pass the European Standard (CE EN174:2001), indicating a safe level of sun protection.

LENS CONSTRUCTION . AND COMPOSITION Construction: All Salomon lenses are made from high optical plastic or resin • polycarbonate • polyamide • acetate These provide the best combination of optical quality, mechanical and chemical properties, and light weight.
DIE CUT LENS
FW15 Goggle Training Manual | optical expertise
Die cut lenses are cut from flat plastic sheets, normally made of polycarbonate or acetate. They can be bent to fit into the goggle frame or heat pre-shaped to better fit the frame. Die cut lenses generally have lower optic quality, but are affordable and protective. Salomon offers die-cut lenses in our value price levels. But it is important to know that some manufacturers offer them at higher price points as well.
Good to know Die cut lenses are also used in racing goggles, primarily as single use (one race run). The benefit is easier storing and faster lens changes, and for single use, fogging is not normally an issue.
INJECTED LENS Injected lenses are molded into the final shape, using top quality and shock resistant polycarbonate. They provide the best optical perfection and sharp vision, but also cost more.
Salomon offers injected lenses in our mid to high end price levels.

LENS CONSTRUCTION . AND COMPOSITION DIFFERENT LENS SHAPES: SKI GOGGLES ARE PRINCIPALLY INFLUENCED BY FASHION AND STYLE. THE VARIOUS LENS SHAPES (CYLINDRICAL, SPHERICAL, TORIC-SHAPED) ARE DRIVEN BY YOUR RIDING STYLE . AND LOOK. CYLINDRICAL Cylindrical lenses have a 2D flat appearance. Flat vertically, curved horizontally around the face. They offer wide horizontal field of vision, but have a slight limited vertical field of vision which is only subtly detected during use. Product type: SALOMON COSMIC / XVIEW / XVIEW S / AKSIUM
SPHERICAL
Product type: SALOMON XMAX / XTEND / XTEND S
TORIC – SHAPED Toric – shaped lenses have a 3D appearance, with a different radius horizontally and vertically (think barrel shaped). Toric – shaped lenses provide a wider horizontal field of vision. This shape is not currently used by SALOMON. Product type: SMITH I/O
FW15 Goggle Training Manual | optical expertise
Spherical lenses have a 3D rounded appearance, similar to a human eye. The shape is uniform in radius, horizontally and vertically, and offers a wider peripheral field of vision.

LENS CONSTRUCTION . AND COMPOSITION THE CHOICE OF LENS TINTS: SKIING AND SNOWBOARDING INVOLVES DRAMATICALLY CHANGING LIGHT AND WEATHER CONDITIONS: FROM SUNNY TO FOGGY TO SNOW OR RAIN. IN EACH LIGHT CONDITION, SEEING THE DETAILS AND UNDULATIONS ON THE SURFACE IS CRITICAL. TOO BRIGHT OR TOO DARK MEANS FLATTENING THE TERRAIN, WHICH CAN BE DANGEROUS. Different color choices highlight the critical red, green or yellow portions of the visible light spectrum in order to allow normal color perception, provide comfort in bright, reflective conditions, or adapt to the dark when the sun sets.
Among the recommendations for snow are the following color ranges available in the market: • Dark Grey: The best protection against extremely bright conditions, glare and intense UV rays, without changing color perception.
FW15 Goggle Training Manual | optical expertise
• Brown: Ideal in a variety of bright reflective conditions, brown highlights contrasts for better overall visibility. • Orange: Allows more contrasts and consequently better vision, especially in low light conditions. • Yellow: Reduces the blue light and helps increase visual acuity, ideal for storm conditions and really low light. • Pink: Delivers the brightest contrast and works well in flat light conditions.
DARK TINTED LENSES Provide a high level of visible light filtration for reduced glare. Also allow good color restitution, resulting in excellent visibility in bright sunlight. LIGHT TINTED LENSES Low level of visible light filtration allows more contrast and improved vision in low light and poor weather conditions.

LENS CONSTRUCTION . AND COMPOSITION DIFFERENT LENS COATINGS POLARIZED Sunlight is absorbed or reflected in several different directions. When it is reflected on horizontal surfaces like water, snow or a wet road, it reflects back in a similar horizontal direction. This produces glare, causing visual discomfort and a potentially dangerous blinding effect. Polarized lenses contain a laminated filter that allows only vertically oriented light to pass through. By blocking horizontally oriented light, glare is almost completely eliminated.
FW15 Goggle Training Manual | optical expertise
Are all polarizing lenses the same? Not all polarization is equal. There are variations in the quality of the filter and the way the lens is produced. Cheap polarization may only cut glare by 10%. Salomon Polarized lenses are built and tested to eliminate 99% of reflected horizontal light.
Good to know Some advantages of polarized lenses: • Improves visual comfort. • Improves contrast and visual clarity. • Reduces eyestrain. • Allows for true perception of colors. • Reduces reflections and eliminates glare. Some disadvantages of polarized lenses: • You may be unable to see your cell phone or GPS device. • Reduces the reflection that makes icy patches identifiable, so it can be harder to see them with polarized lenses.

FIELD OF VISION WHAT IS IT? The field of vision is the peripheral visual space seen by the eyes. It normally ranges from 180° laterally and 130° vertically (60 ° up, 70 ° down).
60˚
70˚
180˚
Humans have a binocular vision which is divided into 3 areas: • central area, also called “fovea”: from 1° to 2° centered opening, to focus on fine details. • mid area, also called “ergonoma”: from 2 x 30° opening, to visualize the shape. • large area, also called “panorama”: from 2 x 60 ° and the vertical angle by 60 ° upwards and 70 ° downwards, to detect the movement. Beyond 120°, the eye only perceives light and shade.
When you wear ski goggles, your field of vision is limited by the dimensions of the internal frame.

FIELD OF VISION PATENTED LOW PROFILE FRAME
FW15 Goggle Training Manual | innovation
Salomon introduced the X-TEND concept with a significant innovation, greater field of vision. By reducing the thickness of the frame and extending it wider, X-TEND offers greater peripheral vision than other goggles. X-MAX takes this innovation even further, with more horizontal and vertical field of vision.
Good to know Since Salomon introduced the X-TEND frame, all competitors have jumped into the same communication of extra field of vision. Some have even created a “frameless” ski goggle that looks like a wide field from the outside. But look inside some frameless goggles and the field of vision is actually narrower. Salomon’s patented frame design for X-TEND and X-MAX ensure the widest field of vision on the market.

VENTILATION / ANTI-FOG ANTI-FOG SOLUTION
WHAT CAUSES FOGGING? Fogging is caused by the deposit of water droplets formed when we sweat. These droplets condense on the coldest surface they meet, normally the inside of your goggle lens. The colder it is outside, and the more we exert ourselves, the greater the potential for fogging.
SALOMON’S SOLUTION
FW15 Goggle Training Manual | innovation
DOUBLE LENS Reducing the temperature difference between the outside air and inside the goggle, Salomon’s double lenses work like double glazed windows at home. Air trapped between the two layers provides insulation. The foam spacer between the lenses is watertight, but allows air to pass through, so the lens won’t warp due to pressure changes at different altitudes. The inner lens is made from cellulose acetate, which absorbs humidity. A chemical procedure on the inside of the lens removes the plasticiser, so the cellulose can work at it’s most efficient level.

INNOVATION
VENTILATION / ANTI-FOG ANTI-FOG SOLUTION Anti-fog system Research with Salomon’s Mountain Collective reveals that fogging and increased field of vision are the two essential areas for goggle improvement. With patents in place for the widest field of vision, the next focus is to eliminate fogging. In collaboration with our selected lens partner, Salomon has developed a new anti-fog solution: a unique, dual-layer lens construction.
Built as a fusion between the inner and outer lenses, this dual layer construction is considerably more efficient in preventing fogging. This new Anti Fog layering surpasses the existing standards and norms. The standard is: If lenses are described as fog resistant, they must remain free of fog for a minimum of 30 seconds when tested in accordance with the standard, which requires 30 seconds at 80% of the initial value sample free of fog (fog-free period)
Standard EN 168-2001
The application will be offered on Salomon’s brand new COSMIC AFS goggle. AFS will also be offered on the XRACE goggle. And because we know that clear vision and fogging are big issues for eyeglass wearers, we’ve developed a special COSMIC AFS OTG for eyeglass wearers.*

Photochromic LTS
Coating definitions
Photochromic lens responds to changing light conditions by dynamically adjusting the level of tint from lighter to darker. LTS is an exclusive development for Salomon. As you know, temperature also affects lens tint changes, just as UV does. Thanks to this new low temperature sensitivity lens, the changing light reactivation will be uniquely impacted by UV, and not or less temperature. So the performance of the new Photochromic LTS will answer truly to the skier’s needs.
Polarized
Coating definitions
Polarized lenses contain a laminated filter that allows only vertically oriented light to pass through. This blocks the horizontally oriented light so glare is almost eliminated.
