He will keep your attention as he shares his expertise throughout the lesson. He makes sure you do not get lost along the way. You will learn to use bidding boxes instead of speaking your bids aloud. By the end of the afternoon, you will actually play at least four hands of bridge independently. One Oak Ridge teenager who took this course last summer occasionally plays with the regular bridge group. You are never too old or too young to learn bridge.

ORHS Masquers Present Their Spring Musical: Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat Oak Ridge High School Masquers, the school’s drama program, will present Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, the delightful musical, for four performances in

March. The performances are scheduled for Friday, March 4, at 7p.m., and Saturday, March 5 at 2p.m. and 7p.m., and Sunday, March 6, at 2pm at the Oak Ridge Performing Arts Center. Advanced tickets are $7 and are available at the ORHS office and The Ferrell Shop. At the door, tickets will be $10. Under the direction of Dana Wham, who has directed, choreographed, or acted in numerous adult and children productions throughout the region, this year’s Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor

Dreamcoat is a complete operetta, with nearly every line sung. Between the volume of costumes, the number of different musical styles and dance numbers, a soaring set, 37 student actors and 20 orchestra performers and 22 back-stage technicians, alongside the beautiful complexity that an Andrew Lloyd We b b e r a n d Tim Rice musical can bring, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat will be one of the most ambitious theatrical performances the school has produced. This family-friendly show starts as the Narrators sing about the Biblical story of Joseph and his coat of many colors. Then the stage explodes into a collection of light and sound as Joseph and his many brothers sweep onstage. Jealous of Joseph’s coat, given to him by his father to show that Joseph is his favorite, his brothers

He is quickly swept into the Egyptian Pharaoh’s court, where he is placed in charge of preparations for the coming famine. Joseph is now the most powerful man in Egypt, second only to Pharaoh. When the famine pushes Joseph’s brothers to come to Egypt, Joseph has to deal with the very people that sold him into slavery. Masquers is a student-driven extracurricular program at ORHS of 65-plus students supported by community members and teaching staff from departments across the

high school. Past performances have included Oliver!, Guys and Dolls, Harvey, Murder in the Magnolias, and many more. Masquers yearly season showcases a fall play, a spring musical, a night of short sketches, and a murder mystery train dinner in conjunction with the Southern Appalachia Railway Museum.

Magic Flutes & Women of Note; Feb. 27&28 ORCO Concerts You have two choices for the next free performance by the Oak Ridge Community Orchestra: 2:00 pm Saturday, Feb. 27th at the First Baptist Church of Oak Ridge, or 4:00 pm Sunday, Feb. 28th at the Cokesbury United Methodist Church in West Knoxville. The flute magic originates with the Magic Flute Overture by Mozart, and is enhanced by the Concerto for Two Flutes by Johann Quantz. Young maidens get their recognition in Brigg Fair by Delius, and La Damoiselle Élue by Debussy. Continuing with the women of note, the Debussy piece features the Cokesbury Women’s Chorus, with soprano soloists

Kathryn Frady Marvel and Ryan Colbert, whereas the Quantz concerto is performed by Barbara Sparks and Janet Allen. With two options to pick, your chances are orders of magnitude better than winning the Powerball Lottery. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

It’s about a young man anticipating meeting his love interest at the fair. Grainger added three stanzas, and shaped the melody into an unaccompanied chorus with tenor soloist. Upon hearing Grainger’s arrangement in 1907, Delius was so impressed with the melody, he used it as the basic theme for his orchestration, Brigg Fair — An English Rhapsody, first performed in 1908. The opening pastoral scene is set by a flute and harp. After 19 bars, the oboe introduces the folksong melody, and the flute responds. Delius works the theme through a diversity of tempos, moods and textures, (See ‘Concerts’ on page 51)

February is American Heart Month – Go Red for Women! February is American Heart Month, established by an act of Congress in 1963 in collaboration with the American Heart Association (AHA). Every year, the President declares February heart month to promote awareness of heart disease, to assist in raising funds for heart research, and to encourage heart healthy habits. Over the last 50 years, this and other national campaigns against hypertension and smoking have been effective in reducing the overall incidence and prevalence of heart disease in men by 40%, but in women only 25%, likely driven by increased female cigarette consumption over

this time. Women’s heart health in February, receives Special special interest through Guest a campaign “Go Red for Women” sponsored Stephen by the AHA and supTeague, MD porting partners. Preventing as many as possible risk factors is the best way to avoid clinical events over a lifetime and improve longevity and wellbeing. At this time, medical science can’t alter the genes you

inherited from your parents ; this risk you cannot avoid! A strong family history for heart disease mandates even more diligent control for the treatable risk factors of smoking, cholesterol, hypertension, and diabetes.

Hypertension (high blood pressure) is the single most important and treatable risk factor. Every time pressure rises by 20 points, stroke risk doubles, and heart attack risk increases significantly. Fortunately blood pressure elevations are easily detected and measured, and a wide range of highly effective treatments and therapies may be brought to bear. The first hypertension intervention is diet, exercise and stress reduction. Mild hypertension usually responds in a very gratifying way to these efforts. If these lifestyle modifications fail to control blood pressure, then highly effective prescription drugs can be applied. Modern drugs for hypertension are very well tolerated and effective with minimal side effects and have proven clinical (See ‘Heart’ on page 22)

The HeART of the Community As we roll into another wintery season filled with school closings and sub-freezing temperatures, don’t forget that our community of Anderson County has just the ticket to keep you warm and entertained. This is the time

of year that many of the arts organizations look forward to as they bring us inside to enjoy each other’s friendship and take part in exhibits and performances by talented artists around our town. Please mark your calendars for a “Tribute to the Arts” event that will take place at the Saint Mary’s Family Life Center located in Oak Ridge on Tuesday, March 29th from

6pm-9pm. This is the second time that the Arts Council of Oak Ridge has offered this unique gala giving members of our community a chance to recognize local artists and arts supporters for their wonderful work promoting the arts

in Anderson County. Each of the arts agencies will be showcasing their talents so it’s the perfect time to sample from the smorgasbord of arts in our community. The event will be co-promoted by the Rotary Club of Oak Ridge Sunset with proceeds from ticket sales and a silent auction benefiting both organizations and their philanthropies. Tickets may be purchased by contacting the Arts Council

Jim Dodson of Oak office at 482-4432 or contacting any representative from the eight member organizations. Those groups are Oak Ridge Art Center, Oak Ridge Civic Music Association, Oak Ridge Civic Ballet Association, Tennessee Mountain Writers, Oak Ridge Playhouse, Oak Ridge Community Orchestra, Oak Ridge Community Band, and the Music Arts School. Speaking of these wonderful organizations and all that they offer to benefit our community, please take time during the month of February to attend a show or exhibition. The Oak Ridge Art Center

is currently showing three exhibitions. “Ebony Imagery XVI: Black Artists of Tennessee” features a great variety of work created from very sophisticated techniques, like macro photography and manipulated glass, to those of classic fine art and craft, such as oil and acrylic painting and beautiful ceramics, and even to those created with more ancient techniques like pit firing and raku. “Art is Stranger than Fiction” is a mixed media exhibition by regional artist Anne Powers in the voices of two characters from her novel, “Smoke from Small Fires.” As Anna Grace Tollett and Pearlie Bean, Ms. Powers delivers an amazing array of fascinating pieces with great references to the book which is available from Amazon.com. The third exhibition is the continuation of “New Gifts from the Permanent Collection” featuring pieces that have been con-

tributed in the last several of years. Works shown include those by international artists - two by Salvador Dali, a Renoir, and a Santlofer - as well as those by regional favorites - Nancy Jacobsohn, Denise Stewart-Sanabria, and Cynthia Markert. The exhibition opened on January 17 and will run through March (See ‘HeARTS’ on page 40)

The Authenticity of Los Encinos Oak Ridge has a new name in Mexican dining: Los Encinos! Owner Hugo Santillan opened Los Encinos’s doors at the beginning of January in the spot previously known as Puerto Cancun and he is bringing some nice changes to a favorite local Mexican establishment. For the past two and a half years, Hugo has enjoyed success with his other restaurant in Oliver Springs, “Los

Trios” and is happy to establish himself in the Oak Ridge community as well. And what he is bringing to Oak Ridge is what he calls “authentic” Mexican cooking. Part of the difference will be seen in nightly specials of traditional Mexican dishes he will create such as fish filets, and meats such as pork or chicken wings with mango sauce. “Most people want their food quickly,” Hugo said. “And we have a menu full of items that

Why PHIIT Classes at NFC Work for Everyone! We all perform better with good coaching. It’s just a fact of life. No wonder more and more people are getting into Personal High Intensity Interval Training (PHIIT) with the personal trainers at National Fitness Center! These small group classes offer people who may not have previously afforded a personal trainer similar benefits. PHIIT classes are intense, yet they work for men and women at every fitness level. The professionals at NFC carefully time the classes so everyone gets short bursts of workouts, alternating various muscle groups, and allowing carefully timed resting periods. “We’re creating an affordable option that works for everybody at all fitness levels,” said Personal Training Director

John Weiss at the NFC Tazewell Pike club. On the morning I visited PHIIT class, five women were working with kettlebells, resistance bands, medicine balls and a wall clock to rotate through the routine led by Personal Trainer Kasey Kurtz. The eldest group member was Norma Prahl, who’ll soon turn 64 and was lifting much heavier weights than some women half her age. I struggled at times to keep up, but I also was given adaptations to try when I couldn’t do exactly what some class veterans were doing.

Overactive Bladder, that “gotta go NOW” feeling… Overactive bladder (OAB) is a condition that affects more than 33 million Americans, including 40% of women and 30% of men. This number is likely much higher, because fewer than half of people living with OAB ever ask for help. Some are embarrassed, or don’t know how to talk to their physician about their symptoms. Others think that OAB is a normal part of aging, and that there aren’t any treatments available. The key symptom of OAB is the sudden, uncontrollable urge to urinate (urgency). It is commonly accompanied by frequency (going more than eight times a day) and nocturia (going 2 or more times a night). More than 40% of those with OAB also have urinary incontinence (unwanted leaking of urine).

OAB can have a large negative impact on quality of life. It can make it hard to get through the day (and night) without many trips to the bathroom, which can affect work, social activities, exercise, and sleep. Over time, people tend to shy away from situations where they feel they might not be able to get to the bathroom, leading to social withdrawal, loneliness, and isolation. A healthy bladder stays relaxed until it gets full, when it then prompts the urge to urinate. In OAB, the bladder muscle contracts too often, or without warning. OAB can be caused by the nerve signals between the bladder and brain telling the bladder to empty even when it isn’t full. It can also be the result of the bladder muscle being

Walking for Better Health One of the easiest exercise programs to implement into your life is walking. Some people assume that walking cannot produce substantial health benefits because it is not as vigorous as other aerobic activities such as running or riding a bicycle. This could not be farther from the truth. Walking, even for short amounts of time, produces significant cardiovascular benefits. Walking is safe for those who are overweight, elderly, recovering from injuries and pregnant women. Walking is so beneficial in fact, that those recovering from heart attacks use walking in their cardiac rehabilitation program. Because it is a low impact activity, walking is a relatively safe form of exercise. All you need is a quick stretch to get the body warmed up and you can begin. With that being said, it

Brian Christiansen is important to note that you should not begin any new exercise program without consulting your doctor first. While walking is a very safe activity, you must warm up to prevent injuries. In fact, the majority of reported walking injuries are a result of not warming up prior to walking. A warm up takes about 10 minutes and will save you from injury and sore muscles. Warming up is nothing more than stretching your muscles prior to walking. This is accomplished by floor stretches, specifically targeting the calves, hamstrings,

thighs, arms and back. Slowly stretch each major muscle group for 30 seconds at a time. After stretching each muscle group twice, you are

Promote Resilience in 2016 Resolutions are made each and every year: I resolve to exercise more, eat less, and drive without texting, and so on. Our promises are always well intended and usually aim to improve the overall quality of our life, but they sure can be burdensome in the New Year and for many, the resolution unwinds and leaves uninvited guests of stress, disappointment, and failure. Looking for a change in your New Year guests? This new year, let’s choose to invite resilience into our lives. It is well documented how the stress and pressure of the season’s many demands can lead to a bout of the blues, in the very least, and at worst, dark melancholy and mounting anxiety. And for some, the New Year is a season of

painful memories of a love departed and where, even in Special the company of others, you Guest feel utterly alone. Taking steps to prevent the escalation of stress in the first place, especially during the holidays, can be time well spent. How, you ask? “Resiliency” is a word that has caught on these days. You hear it in social services, in geo-political debates, why you even hear it used in coach-speak, as in, “The

the season.” A recent blog by the New Economics Foundation introduced five key factors to bolster resilience and strengthen protective factors, especially during seasonal spikes of fatigue, stress, and anxiety. The ingredients to help stave off the seasonal blues are simple and familiar: connect, be active, take notice, keep learning, and give. As we lean into 2016, consider inviting resilience into your life by surrounding yourself with positive, meaningful connections and invest time in developing them. Be ac-

tive in motion, in voice, and in choice - go for walks, share a story, and feed the positive influences in your life. Take notice of people and things around you; observe the beauty of this season; and reflect on your experiences to better recognize what is most important to you. Keep learning new things. Reach for that book you’ve been putting off or pick up that instrument. Go explore. And finally, give to someone your smile, your time, your gratitude. Why, give the gift of being good to you. You deserve it. To be sure, these ingredients will not work for everyone all the time, but by inviting resilience into the New Year, you just might keep the uninvited guests of stress, disappointment, and feelings of failure out.

Living With No Regrets!” When the phone rang at 10:30 a.m. in my office on Monday, January 4, little did I realize that my entire world would be upended. How much time do I have phone call, just as abruptly left? 8 days later my mother’s life ended. For days, I tried to communicate with my mother in various ways—whispers of reassurance, rubbing her arm, holding her cold fingers, kissing her on the forehead and reiterating words of faith and love on behalf of the entire family. My last extensive conversation with her was helping her order her last meal for dinner. The ICU doctor wanted to see if she could begin to handle anything solid for her nutrition. That final meal request was—

meatloaf with catsup (have to have catsup on it to be legitimate meatloaf dish!), mashed potatoes with a pat of butter on top, vanilla pudding, and hot tea with cream in it. Being known as an old-fashioned, splendid cook, it was ironic that I was now in the position of being responsible for her meal! What seemed to matter most to my mom at that moment was that I was present, in the room, and able to communicate her desires to the person taking the order. Another thing that seems to matter and make the most difference is the wisdom of living a life that prepares for the suddenness of death, and has an aura of foresight for the inevitable. And I do not mean just the legal, medical and financial aspects of this. My mother had done a lot in each of these areas. Rather, I am talking about living the

kind of life that is not self-centered, knows the shortness of life, and gives one’s time and energy to a greater cause. My mother gave the best years of her golden season to the church’s food pantry and children’s ministry of her local church. She gave a gilded edge to the golden years that shined in a deep seated wisdom living for others. Her love and joy of life demonstrated what a meaningful and purposeful existence looked like with the will of God guiding her divine destiny. This journey was accompanied with certain tools akin to what she might use in her flower beds. Each tool had its purpose, and enabled her to blossom in her later years: the guidance of the Bible, her daily prayers, her weekly good works at church, her (See ‘Regrets’ on page 30)

The very first bomb dropped by the Allies on Berlin during World War II...

Think About Sending Financial Valentines to Loved Ones Americans spent nearly $19 billion in Valentine’s Day gifts last year, according to the National Retail Federation. Much of this money went for gifts with short shelf lives, such as candy, flowers and restaurant meals (and about $700 million was spent on gifts for pets). There’s certainly nothing wrong with giving chocolates or roses. But this year, think about going beyond the classic gifts. Instead, use Valentine’s Day as

an opportunity to determine how you can make gifts with long-lasting impact to your circle of loved ones.

Financial Advice

Here are some suggestions:

Karl Flatau

• For your spouse or significant other… As long as your spouse or significant other has earned income, he or she may be able to contribute to a traditional or Roth IRA. So, consider giving a check to be used for that purpose.

A traditional IRA can grow tax deferred, while contributions are usually tax-deductible. (Taxes are due upon withdrawal, and withdrawals prior to 59½ may be subject to a 10% IRS penalty.) While Roth IRA contributions are not deductible, any earnings growth can be distributed tax free, provided the account owner doesn’t take withdrawals until age 59½ and has had the account at least five years. For 2015 and 2016, the IRA contribution limit is $5,500, or $6,500 for those 50 or older. • For your children… You don’t have to be rich to give

your children a gift worth $1 million – you just have to help them through school. College graduates earn about $1 million more over their lifetimes than those without a degree, according to research from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. Still, college isn’t cheap: The average annual cost – tuition, fees, room and board – for a private four-year college is more than $42,000, according to the College Board, while the comparable figure for a pub-

lic four-year school is about $19,000. Of course, if financial aid is available, you could get some help. Nonetheless, you may want to start putting away money for college. One popular college savings vehicle is a 529 plan. Your 529 plan contributions may be deductible from your state taxes, and any earnings growth can be withdrawn tax-free, provided it is used for qualified higher education expenses. (However, if you take withdrawals from your 529 plan, and you don’t use the money for these higher education expenses, you may be subject to both income (See ‘Valentines’ on page 32)

Smart Pill More and more often we are hearing the term “Nootropics.” It is a term used in the medical and nutrition and supplement circles categorizing substances that improve brain function. It is a means of enhancing performance in activities and endeavors such as business, academics, or creative arts, or any activity that requires tireless mental and cognitive application. Nootropics are also called smart drugs and they first entered the market in the mid20th century, initially through army experiments to keep

Windows 10: To Upgrade or Not With the recent release of Microsoft’s Windows 10 operating system, we’ve been flooded with all sorts of questions from people asking about it: “Is it worth the upgrade?” “Is it actually free?” For those of you unfamiliar with it, don’t worry, let me explain. Last July, Microsoft released the successor to their Windows 8/8.1 operating system, Windows 10, as a free upgrade to all Windows 7 and 8.1 users. This offer unfortunately will not last forever though; after July 29th of this year, you’ll have to buy Windows 10 if you didn’t already take advantage of the upgrade. Because of this, we’ve decided to provide you a rundown of the new operating system and what you can expect from it if you decide to upgrade.

exactly like what Windows 8/8.1 should have been in the first place. After much complaint, Microsoft brought back a traditional start menu and integrated a tile screen into it, allowing you to easily customize and access your favorite applications. Speaking of apps, Microsoft has rolled out a significant number of new apps, games, and utilities with Windows 10 that, as of this moment, are working very well. These apps are also useable across all Windows 10 supported devices including tablets, phones, laptops, and desktops, making integration with your other Windows 10 devices impressively easy. Microsoft has also increased protection with Windows 10 by implementing a new security system that automatically installs security updates as The Good they’re released, unlike past Windows 10 looks and feels versions of Windows that

Kevin Crowley only installed them when Microsoft sent out general Windows updates. In theory, this means that your security is always up to date, making it harder for people to access your computer. For gamers looking to upgrade, Windows 10 comes exclusively installed with DirectX 12 in it, offering a 10%-20% performance increase for multimedia tasks and applications. While the software doesn’t provide a 30%-40% performance increase as initially reported, it is still a solid improvement from simply updating some software. The Bad Windows 10, like all other operating systems before it, doesn’t come without its cons though. While it’s great that Microsoft decided to bring back the traditional start menu, it still feels like it’s missing a few things. Time to Start a New Year It doesn’t seem possible but it is time for a new year -- in fact, several days into one. Many of us will rejoice in the idea while others dread the thoughts.

Art is Stranger than Fiction with Anne Powers February is a Do-not-miss month at the Oak Ridge Art Center. There are two stunning bodies of work on display that you need to experience. The first is the recurring Ebony Imagery, show featuring African American artists from Tennessee presenting their works of ceramics, painting and more, that range from primitive and elemental to modern and refined, each evoking emotion and themes of the African-American experience. The second is an innovative concept by Anne Powers. Anne is known in our area as the former head of the art department at Roane State. Around the country, she is known as an award-winning artist, and now, an author. Her exhibit Art is Stranger than Fiction is an approach to a body of work that comes from a direction, a path that I do not think has never been tread before. An accomplished artist of her own work, Anne stays behind the scene in this exhibit as she is not claiming to be the artist who completed the work. It was all done by fictitious char-

acters in the novel she wrote, Smoke from Small Fires.

Artist of the Month

Let me explain: The novel depicts the life of an AppalaMelissa chian girl, Anna Grace Tollett, her family, and the live-in maid Bishop who raised her, Pearlie Bean. Set in the 1950’s against the head was a schizophrenic experience.” Anne calls herself a “ghost artist” for these two characters who express their fictitious existence through paintings, collage, sketchbooks, and sculpture. Not only is it a stunning array of work, but the difference between the two artists’ style is evident in not only subject matter, but color choice and training.

rough backdrop of life hit with tragedy and cruelty and surrounded by poverty and angst with authentic Appalachian life and dialogue, Smoke from Small Fires creates two artists: Anna Grace and Pearlie Bean. They are the creators of the work in Art is Stranger than Fiction. “It was very freeing,” Anne Powers said of creating work as someone else. “But to get inside someone else’s

As I talked earlier of the primitive aspect of Ebony Imagery, Pearlie Bean is a primitive African American artist with no training or education and not many traditional art supplies, just a need to create and a loss to honor. On the other hand, Anna Grace, a white and comparatively privileged girl, given education and art supplies, as well as a very different view of the world from Pearlie Bean, creates rendered and refined works

Smoke from Small Fires is the hand-held iceberg below the surface of Art is Stranger than Fiction, the submerged mountain of a story behind a compelling body of work that so beautifully illustrates how most art--the really good art-that affects the viewers, calling their eyes and minds to dwell in its presence, has a novel’s worth of story, history, and life behind it. Art is Stranger than Fiction and Ebony Imagery are on display at the Oak Ridge Art Center at 201 Badger Avenue through the month of February. Smoke from Small Fires is available through Amazon.com, as well as through Pocahontas Press. Art is Stranger than Fiction will become a permanent exhibit on Pinterest after the show is dismantled at the Art Center. You can find Anne on Pinterest at annepowers.

If you have a child in college, you’re probably familiar with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which must be completed to help ensure that students don’t miss out on federal and state grants, work-study jobs and loans. But you might not know that some important changes will be coming to the FAFSA during 2016 – and these changes can affect both the process of filing for aid, and, possibly, the amount of aid your child will receive. Here are three key changes to watch for: Earlier availability of the FAFSA – Currently, you need to complete the FAFSA as soon as possible after Jan. 1 – which means you’re probably filling out the form even before you’ve filed your taxes, which aren’t due until April. As a result, you may have

The tip of a bullwhip moves so fast that the sound it makes is actually a tiny sonic boom.

Watch for Changes to the FAFSA to estimate your income and update the information later. However, beginning with the 2017–2018 school year, you can complete the FAFSA starting on Oct. 1 of the previous calendar year, rather than wait until January. At that point, you will already have filed your 2015 taxes, so in filling out the FAFSA, you won’t have to rely on estimates of your income. For 2016 only, this change presents something of an anomaly – specifically, you should fill out the FAFSA as soon as possible for the 2016–2017 school year, using an estimate of your 2015 income, and then complete the FAFSA again in October for the 2017–2018 school year, using your actual 2015 income. In future years, you’ll only have to complete the FAFSA once, with applica-

beginning

Lower “asset protection” allowance –When you report your financial information on the FAFSA, some of your assets – such as your IRA and 401(k) – are not counted toward the resources you’re expected to contribute to your child’s education. Some other assets are considered available, but a percentage of these assets can be sheltered, with the exact amount depending largely on your age and marital status. For the 2016–17 school year, this sheltered asset amount has been reduced significantly. However, while this reduction could have some effect on your student’s aid package, it shouldn’t be too severe because income, more than assets, is a bigger factor in the federal financial aid formula. No more shared mailing list – When filing the FAFSA, students can choose up to 10 colleges to receive their

financial information. Previously, when students sent their FAFSAs to multiple colleges and universities, these schools could see the other institutions on the mailing list. But starting with the 2016– 2017 application, schools will no longer have this information. This could actually benefit your child. Previously, if a school saw it was listed first on the FAFSA, it might have assumed it was the student’s first choice and, as a result, may not have felt the need to be flexible in awarding financial aid. Now, though, without a list of its competitors, a school might be more open to negotiating a more favorable

aid package for your child. It’s a good idea to stay current on the changes connected to the FAFSA because it helps determine financial aid eligibility – and financial aid is a key component of your strategy to pay for your child’s (or grandchild’s) education.

Yoga (Continued from page 18) ages you to relax, to deepen and slow the breath, to focus awareness in the present moment. This allows the body to shift from the sympathetic nervous system (fight or flight) to the parasympathetic nervous system which has a calming and restorative effect. It helps lower your resting heart rate which reduces blood pressure and inflammation as well as boosting levels of hemoglobin in red blood cells, making platelets less sticky, and decreasing your risk for heart attacks and strokes. That restorative effect also increases serotonin levels which ease depression and anxiety. You’ll also get a great night’s sleep!

you to move with grace and confidence. Yoga encourages you to move from the center of your being, allowing energy to flow down into the earth as well as rise through the crown of the head, keeping you grounded yet fluid in your movements. Better balance leads to a lower risk of injury from tripping or falling.

These are only a few of many benefits of Yoga. With a consistent practice you can gain these plus numerous other benefits. Crossfit

(Continued from page 48) CrossFit is an overall body workout, but still targets the typical trouble spots such as the belly. Although most of the exercises do not seem to focus on abs or "the core,” many of them are actually working to stabilize and support the body through the core. Movements such as squats, deadlifts, the O-lifts, burpees, pushups, pullups (especially the kipping variety) place greater emphasis on the abs working in concert with the rest of the body and will result in stronger muscles than the isolation of crunches. Additionally, the standard CrossFit warmup includes sit-ups.

Bladder (Continued from page 15) months, as the bladder recovers from the toxin. Neuromodulation therapy is the name given to a group of treatments that deliver electrical pulses to nerves to change

how they send and receive messages to and from the bladder. There are 2 types of neuromodulation therapy available. Percutaneous tibial nerve stimulation (PTNS) stimulates the tibial nerve. PTNS is performed during an office visit that takes about 30 minutes. A needle electrode is placed near the ankle. It sends

electrical pulses to the tibial nerve, which runs along the knee to the sacral nerves. The electrical pulses help block the nerve signals that aren’t working correctly. Often, patients receive 12 weekly treatments, depending on how well they are doing. The series of treatments is often repeated every 6 months or so. Sacral neuromodulation (SNS) therapy works by stimulating the sacral nerves (near the base of the spine). These nerves carry signals between the brain and the bladder. In OAB, these nerve signals don’t work correctly. SNS uses a gentle electrical stimulation to reduce these signals, which can improve OAB symptoms. A thin lead, or wire, is placed

through the skin of the upper buttock, close to the sacral nerves. This first test, or evaluation phase can be done in the doctor’s office. The device is then tested to see how well it works to reduce symptoms. If it improves the OAB symptoms, then during a second procedure, the lead is connected to a small battery operated device, which is then placed under the skin of the upper buttock. This device delivers gentle electrical impulses to the bladder to stop the signals that can

cause OAB. A last resort is a surgical intervention that involves the enlargement of the bladder using bowel tissues, which can greatly enlarge volume of urine the bladder, is able to hold.

to recognize (and not deny) our own risk factors and take steps to get these factors identified and controlled. We could all improve our diets. We could all improve our exercise efforts. We could all initiate a home blood pressure monitoring program. We could all lead less stressful lives by periodic rests, by better sleep, and by simplifying our cluttered days. We would all be healthier and far less likely to become heart patients over our lifetime.

Walking

(Continued from page 16) sidewalks and walking paths. It is best to walk facing the oncoming traffic. Wear bright colored clothing during the day and reflective gear at night. A good rule of thumb is to keep a pace of about 120 steps per minute, or 3 miles per hour.

Walking on a flat surface is a great way to start an exercise program. However, interspersing short periods of increased effort, like hills or stairs, for around 4 minutes at a time can significantly increase the benefits obtained in a regular walking program.

Measuring your progress is simple by listening to your body. If you are feeling energized and your body is less achy, then you are experiencing positive results. If however you are experiencing pain, it is time to consult with your doctor. A podiatrist is a great place to start if you are experiencing pain during or after walking. Most pain associated with walking is from your feet. You may be wearing the wrong shoes or need custom insoles to provide balance and stability. A podiatrist can quickly assess your feet and make recommendations to make your walking regimen pain free.

Most of us know when we are happy. But few of us know what really makes us happy. Do you search for happiness, or do you follow things that bring joy into your life? Albert Einstein, stated that there are two things that we should do every day. The first is to meditate with creative visualization. The second is to play every day. Most of us have forgotten how to play. It doesn’t matter what the play is. It just matters that our minds and our bodies are experiencing something that is joyful.

Forgiveness, I used to think that true forgiveness was forgetting about what happened. However, while sitting in church one Sunday morning, the pastor said, “forgiveness is not forgetting, but it is taken the pain out of the memory”. Think of all the people that you may still have anger towards. It is time for you to break that chain, to quit allowing that person to control you through your painful memory. Forgiveness takes the pain out of the memory.

Challenge yourself to choose happiness. Start your day with your three grateful things. Say to yourself, it’s a great day. Challenge yourself to know what is a healthy sacrifice and an unhealthy sacrifice. Sometimes, it just simply means, quit saying yes to everyone and quit trying to please everyone including your family. When you play the martyr, you lose and so does everyone else around you. Put yourself first. When I travel and take my seat on an airplane and the door closes the flight attendant stands up and says, if the oxygen mask drops from the ceiling, put years on first before trying to help someone else. If you don’t help yourself first, you

CrossFit is described as ‘constantly varied functional movement at high intensity.’ Constantly varied means that we do a different workout every day. All participants perform the same workout or WOD (workout of the day) in a group setting. The exercises, the load (amount of weight used) and the duration of the workout vary from day to day and can all be scaled to an individual’s current fitness level. Functional movement means that we don’t do muscle isolation exercises. We perform movements that use groups of muscles together in t h e way your body normally moves throughout the day. Once an athlete demonstrates the ability to move properly during workouts we then increase the intensity. There are three categories of movement (or exercises) that we use in CrossFit: Weightlifting (deadlift, Olympic lifts,

kettlebells, etc.), Gymnastics (pushup, pullup, squats, body weight exercises) and Metabolic Conditioning – or cardio (running, jump rope, rowing). CrossFit workouts will typically consist of one or more exercises from these categories. The constant variation and wide variety of exercises that we use ensures that athletes don’t get into a boring routine of just going to the gym. (See ‘Crossfit’ on page 42)

Health and Safety Pins Are you someone who makes New Years’ resolutions? Or do you view the start of a new year as a perfect opportunity to make some positive changes in your life? Maybe your goal is getting in better shape, committing to being a better organizer, or perhaps getting a few home improvement projects started (and finished). Whatever your goals are its important to make the necessary preparations to ensure yourself the best possible outcome of your hard work and commitment. One of the most important things you need to do before you even get started is to remove as many obstacles as pos-

sible before you even begin. The best way to ensure that your health and fitness goals are reached is by starting the New Year off by seeing a chiropractor. A doctor of chiropractic is trained to remove what are called vertebral subluxations from the spinal column. A subluxation is a vertebra that has misaligned in a way that places stress on the nervous system. If the stress is significant enough it can sometimes cause pain, but it ALWAYS causes a dis-function within the body. Subluxations keep the body from being able to function properly and therefore they can keep the body from do-

Pharmacists as Health Care Providers Pharmacists are the most accessible health-care professionals yet Medicare doesn’t recognize them as a provider of health-care. One of the most significant pieces of pharmacy related legislation is currently being considered

by our Congressional leaders in Washington, DC. Pharmacy and Medically Underserved Areas Enhancement Act (H.R. 592 / S. 314) would recognized pharmacist as “health care providers” under Medicare Part B. Why is this legislation so important? In a recent report submitted to the Surgeon General entitled Improving Patient and Health Systems Outcomes through Advanced

Pharmacy Practice, Rear Admiral Scott Giberson, the nation’s Chief Pharmacy Officer at the time, noted that “for each dollar invested in the clinical pharmacy service of the period from 1988 to 2005, the overall average benefit gained was $10.07 per $1 of allocated funds.” This is proof that when Pharmacists spend time with patients and counsel them on the correct (See ‘Providers’ on page 50)

In this picture the brain is connected to the body and the body is connected to the brain causing a state of “ease.” This is what we consider the optimal condition for health and wellness within the body. Every organ and body tissue is in constant communication with the brain and because of this connection they can function and properly. The second photo is an example of what happens when the bones our spines are misaligned and cause a disconnection. As we stated earlier a misaligned spinal bone is

called a vertebral subluxation. This condition causes “dis-ease” within the body. As you can see in the picture there is disconnect. The body isn’t fully connected to the brain so it cannot receive all the messages it needs to fully express health. This is where a doctor of chiropractic can help. We are trained to locate, analyze and correct these misaligned bones to restore the brain to body connection so the body can do what it was designed to do on its own, and that’s HEAL itself. Just filling a prescription doesn’t make a patient healthier. The patient must be compliant and if they hare having problems they may need a change in therapy.

So too does strength training. Several studies have shown that regular resistance training helps lower resting blood pressure, raise levels of HDL (good) cholesterol, reduce levels of LDL (bad) cholesterol and lower blood triglycerides. And that’s not all. “Research shows that resistance training reduces visceral or intraabdominal fat, which has been linked to heart disease and diabetes,” says Wayne Wescott PhD, professor of exercise science at Quincy College. Chiropractic is based on the scientific fact that the nervous system controls and regulates virtually every cell, tissue, organ and system of the body. There are growing number of studies which

suggest chiropractic reduces nerve disturbance along the spine, and may enhance the ability of the brain and nerve system to control and regulate the body. These include published research documenting the results of chiropractic care on asthma, infantile colic, immune function, menstrual cramps, improving vision and brain function, lower back pain and one’s overall health status and as well as many others. It is this difference that has brought results to millions since 1895 and caused them to rethink the nature of health and the role of chiropractic care. Everyday, more people want a safe and natural approach

to better health that avoids drugs and surgery . As chiropractors, our interest in the spine is because it houses the nervous system which carries vital communications between your brain and your body. When spinal joints aren’t moving right can irritate nearby nerves causing muscles go into spasm, when this occurs it is called a subluxation. Subluxations cause interference with the control and regulation of your body. Tips for Healthier, More Radiant Skin

Healthy skin starts with a healthy lifestyle. To help the skin look its best, it is important to maintain a healthy diet, get plenty of exercise, drink lots of water, invest in regular facials, and take the time to incorporate a regular beauty regiment. The skin is a living organ that constantly regenerates itself so the right care can improve its support, elasticity, and shine. There are four basic skin types: Oily, Dry, Normal, and Combination. It is possible to have sensitive skin along with any of these four general types. So knowing your skin type is the first step toward obtaining healthier skin. Dry Skin has a tendency to be dehydrated, lacking oil, and has few breakout if any. It can be sensitive to the sun, wind, and cold temperatures. A good treatment for dry skin is to wash with warm water with a rich, creamy cleaner, and then pat the skin dry. Then

Oily Skin has a lot of shine and the pores are generally slightly enlarged. It is prone to pimples, blackheads, and whiteheads than the other skin types. A good treatment for oily skin is to wash your face twice a day with a non-foaming cleanser and warm water. Then use a non-alcohol free toner to help additional residue. The cleansers, toners, makeup, and moisturizers should be fragrance free and hypoallergenic. Cleanse, tone, and moisturize with gentle products every day. The idea for sensitive skin is to choose products with soothing benefits like chamomile, lavender, calamine, rosemary, thyme, aloe vera, or coconut oil. While cleansing, toning and moisturizing are the basics of good skin care, there are other things that you can do to improve the overall health and appearance of your skin.
