FROM THE PUBLISHER One of the biggest battles that we have fought over the past 10 years – is fighting the misperception that “Print is Dead” and that print media has no value. Every time I hear that said by a marketing director or potential sponsor, I laugh – because there is NOBODY that wishes that were true more than me. We have more than 3x as many digital readers as we do print – and yet it costs us more than 20x as much to produce the print editions as it does the digital. The reality, though, is that there is something tangible and REAL about picking up a magazine and actually reading that the internet just doesn’t offer. The experience of reading articles or seeing an ad for a location or event that you might never otherwise consider – and discovering something new and unexpected – is something that you’ll never really get online. The fact that riders – many of which, don’t spend too much time on social media or exploring random websites online – can simply pick up a magazine at their favorite shop, tavern, or even barber shop and begin reading… makes it all worthwhile. For that reason, we will ALWAYS maintain a print version of our magazine. However, the reality is that our world has changed – and clearly our costs have changed dramatically as many of you can relate to. For that reason, and many more, we will be shifting a lot of our focus in 2022 to our digital efforts. We will be focusing more on our digital blogs and content that will only be found online – through our website and Facebook pages. We will continue to print the magazine and distribute it as we have, however, we will be using it more as a gateway to our digital editions. Rest assured that we will STILL produce a print magazine that has events and great content – but there will be far more for you to discover online. To make this easier – we are updating our websites to a new version to start the year. The new format will be even more mobile friendly and offer even more options in a cleaner easier to operate design. We will also continue to add more QR CODES to the magazine and our promotional materials. These codes allow you to easily access our pages by simply focusing the camera of your phone on them. It’s amazing. For those of you challenging our use of Facebook, I can certainly understand your concerns. Regardless of their clear bias and ever-changing guidelines, we believe that this is a platform that we cannot ignore. It is clearly the best way to reach millions of people that we couldn’t otherwise. So, we have chosen to accept the challenges it presents and do our best to operate within the confines of their rules. We also believe that they will eventually have to become more respectful of everyone’s voice. So, I’d like to encourage you to take the time to discover and explore our digital platforms, if you haven’t already. Please check out our Facebook page and like it – possibly even share it or some of our posts as well. Subscribe to our website and discover the resources that we have there.
We have the most complete motorcycle event listings for Ohio – more advanced and complete than anything else online.

TRO Pub Runs
Access EVEN MORE TRO even EASIER!
It’s a Thunder Roads PUB RUN!
One of our goals the last several years has been to make our magazines more interactive for our readers and integrate more digital aspects into our print pieces. This is more than simply a marketing thing or appeal to younger generations. The idea is to create an easy means of accessing the videos, photos, means of ordering and simply more information that we have stored online. We have an amazing website, and new content is being added almost every day. Our social media pages are a great resource and forum for discussion for over 200,000 riders and motorcycle enthusiasts. For years, we’ve included invitations for everyone to “follow us on facebook”, “visit us online”, or simply “check out our website” in order to access our digital aspect. Now, though, we are going to make this even easier through the use of QR codes.
Fun rides w/ Smaller Groups
New QR codes provide easy links with your smartphones.
For 2022, Thunder Roads Ohio will be hosting PUB RUNS throughout the riding season all across Ohio. These will be smaller, organized runs hitting smaller stops that might not be able to accommodate larger rides. Each ride will have a cap of 30-50 riders max, depending on the specifics of the ride and designated stops. The rides will primarily be held on Wednesday or Thursday evenings, although there will be a few Friday and Saturday rides to compliment other events such as Bike Shows the next day. We are offering these up as a sort of “Motorcycle Therapy” – just what the doctor ordered for stressful days and a world that seems to have gone crazy. A chance to ride with friends and meet new Brothers and Sisters. Hit some favorite stops and discover new destinations. All in an easy going, informal, fun format. We will be looking to partner with local riding organizations and clubs to host rides in each area. This will be a great opportunity to connect with other riders and showcase your group. Each ride will cost approx. $20 - $30 and include a t-shirt, snacks along the way, and a meal at the end. Proceeds from the rides will go towards supporting local charitable partners or a designated cause such as Toys for Tots, Special Olympics, or select Veterans Charities. Tentative dates are being announced for some of the rides at this time, in order for us to begin planning stops and arranging partnerships. All dates and locations are subject to change as details are finalized.
Most current smartphone operating systems have QR code scanners built into the camera app, so you simply have to point the camera at the QR code and let the phone scan it. In most cases a notification will appear that you simply have to tap in order to open. And instantly – you can access the information!

A QR code is that black and white image – usually a square – made up of black square, dots and white spaces, that you’ve seen on packages and marketing materials for years. Essentially they work the same way as a barcode at a supermarket. It is a machine-scannable image that can instantly take you to a website or provide you more information on your smartphone. It’s not only EASIER than typing in a lengthy link or website address – your phone doesn’t store the information to your search history.
We have created, featured, and printed a lot of cool stuff over the years – and the vast majority of it is all easily accessible online. With a QR Code, it’s now even easier to go directly to the page or location online that has what you’re looking for.
Other areas being considered: Cincinnati West, Cincinnati Southeast, Cleveland West, Cleveland East, Columbus South, Dayton, Buckeye Lake, and Warren. Facebook events will be created and posted on the Thunder Roads Ohio facebook page and all rides will feature online advance registration – powered by ReasonsToRide.com For more information on the rides, follow us on Facebook. If you’d like to host a ride stop – or possibly you’re part of a riding organization that would consider helping to host or escort the ride, email us at ThunderRoadsOhio@gmail.com
So, grab your smartphone and scan some of the QR codes to access even MORE Thunder Roads!

TRO & ReasonsToRide.com JOIN THE MACHINE GUN PREACHER Thunder Roads Ohio launches campaign to support Sam Childers and his missions. On Sunday, August 25th; Thunder Roads Ohio announced our intention to help support Sam Childers – The Machine Gun Preacher – and his missions around the world. As part of an event with Armored Disciples Motorcycle Ministry and other riding ministries in the Cleveland area, we welcomed Sam to Cleveland for an afternoon at Rocky River Baptist Church. While there, the Machine Gun Preacher shared his own personal experiences and looked beyond his own missions in life to challenge us all to make a difference. If you’re not familiar with Sam Childers and the work he’s done – it’s a story that you need to hear. In the simplest of terms, he is a biker from Pennsylvania that traveled to Africa back in 1998 and witnessed atrocities that ended turning his world upside down. He has since literally saved the lives of THOUSANDS of children that in many cases had been simply left to die. That’s not dramatics or an overstatement. These were orphans that had lost their parents to the violence that has ravaged Sudan, Uganda, and the region for more than 50 years. In this part of Africa, there were no governmental social services for children. And the violence and horrors were
simply so overwhelming that many traditional missionary and aid organizations simply withdrew from the region. It was a situation so bad that news organizations and even the worlds governments simply looked the otherway. But along comes Sam Childers, a BIKER from Pennsylvania, and he took it upon himself to make a difference. One man on a mission to save the lives of children. Instead of being overwhelmed by the challenge – he SIMPLY DID IT. He did what nobody else seemed capable of doing – and he’s been saving the lives of children ever since. For more on Sam Childers and his organization – Angels of East Africa, googgle them online or visit their Facebook page (www. Facebook.com/MGP) @MachineGunPreacher. You can also visit our websites and follow our social media pages for updates on his work and how YOU can help. Back when we started Thunder Roads Ohio in 2011, we first crossed paths with Sam and learned of his work. I was already aware of the atrocities in Sudan after meeting a war refugee from the region while I was in school years before – so I felt a calling to help however I could. We supported a few appearances and helped share his story. But as happens in life, we became distracted with the realities of our own lives and we lost touch. Then it just “so happened” that Sam would be in Florida this past Spring while we were in Daytona for Bike Week. And then “coincidentally” it turned out that Sam would be in Ohio this Spring for a Bike Blessing with the Kingdom Knights Motorcycle Ministry in Akron. 10 10 10 10

I had the opportunity to catch up with Sam and do an interview – which you can find on our facebook page and website. In doing so, we had a simple question – “What’s going on with the Machine Gun Preacher – ten years later, what’s happened with your mission?” To which his reply was even simpler – “I never stopped.” We will share more of his story and work over the coming months and you can find more online, but the simple truth of his life and all that he’s accomplished was exactly what we needed to hear after all we’ve been through over the past year. It was the inspiration for a new charitable initiative and focus for our organization – Mission 2022.
MISSION 2022: And the Machine Gun Preacher Bike Mission 2022 for us is all about launching a new initiative that is focused purely on making a difference. It’s not about politics, race, past history, or any other drama or excuses that might overwhelm or distract us. This isn’t JUST about saving the LIVES of children in Africa – it’s about waking us up and inspiring us to make more of our own lives. Sure there’s A LOT of craziness going on in the world – but we CAN NO LONGER simply leave it to others to fix. We all can’t travel to Africa, nor should we. We have plenty that we can do in our own corner of the world – or even just here in the United States. But in supporting SAM’S WORK – we can help energize change in our own communities.
Our belief is that MISSION WORK and helping others is inspiring and can fuel change in our own lives. We’ve partnered with Sam’s organization – Angels of East Africa, LLC (a 501c3 organization) and Western Reserve Charities, Inc, to launch a campaign to not only support their work in Africa and organizations working to make a difference in our own communities right here in Ohio and the US.
We can NO LONGER simply wait for others to fix our communities and consequently our NATION as a whole. We need to step up ourselves. You can find out more and get your tickets online at ThunderRoadsOhio.com.
A central piece of this effort is a campaign to raffle off Sam’s own personal bike – a Harley-Davidson Street Glide that he had customized in his Pennsylvania shop. It’s one of the original MACHINE GUN PREACHER motorcycles and really a cool bike with a unique look and history.
Thanks to David Eggert, NEO Pro Imaging, for photos.
We are now helping to collect donations which give you the chance to win this motorcycle – while helping to both support the work of SAM and his organization AND local charities right here in Ohio. Over the next several months we are going to share more and more about both Sam Childers and his work – as well as local individuals and organizations that are working in our own communities. Through the Bike Raffle and other initiatives you can help support these efforts and be a part of the change we need.

MOTORCYCLE MINISTRIES Ho, Ho, Hold on a minute!! Didn’t we just start this year?? Man…December already! Christmas and decorations and shopping!! Busy, busy, busy… parties, presents, pressure up the wazoo! Is that how it’s really supposed to be? I say a resounding NO!! I believe December should be the month of Remember! Reflecting on our past year of memorable moments. Good memories, some not so good memories, but memories made that will forever have somewhat of an effect on us. Hopefully, even the not so good ones will bring about a new strength, a new hope and a revival of courage to face the most difficult of challenges! Then there are the good memories…the friends we were able to meet up with again. The events we were able to attend and enjoy. The awesome motorcycling and travel we were able to do. The laughter, the tears, the overcoming fears. All of it wrapped up into one big, delicious memory for us to keep and share as we finish up the year. Rex and I had the privilege to travel a couple of times this year. To Hiawassee, Georgia and out to Iron Mountain near Mena, Arkansas. Rode into Oklahoma, cruised through Kentucky, Tennessee, Missouri, North Carolina, West Virginia…met a lot of great people, prayed with many and shared the passion of the road along with our passion for Christ as we went. We so thoroughly enjoyed our time out on the road and our time together. We aren’t perfect, but in Christ we are perfectly fit for each other and that’s what makes a great team/partnership in marriage.
for relationship with Him and with each other. I think that is so awesome! Trouble is…we spend way too much time looking at the differences in each other, comparing ourselves to each other, competing with each other to the point that we do not honor each other for who we are and what our purpose is. So how do we change that? It’s actually kind of easy…start looking at those around you with the eyes of love….not the human kind of love, but God’s love for humanity. Begin to forgive those that have wronged you or caused you hurt…’That isn’t easy MG…you don’t know what they’ve done’, you’re right, but God does and if you forgive through Him, you will find love for them…even compassion for their souls. It’s not easy, but it certainly is freeing…why carry something around that imprisons you? Chances are that person may not even realize you still carry that with you. Time to clear out the not so good memories and find freedom and peace. That’s what God’s Son, Jesus was sent for…Peace.
Merry Christmas from our hearts to yours! Mary and Rex G.
Relationships with other people are like that, a covenant, some call it a Brotherhood or Sisterhood. That’s what we tend to lean to in the motorcycling community. We become a family and that, my dear friends, is how God intended it to be. He created us to be family. Doesn’t matter what you look like, or where you came from, what matters is what’s in the heart of your being and that is the exact heart that was created by God, our Father. He’s the center of all creation…the heartbeat of us all. He created us

TRO CHAMPIONSHIP BIKE SHOW SERIES DECEMBER UPDATE! The 2021 Thunder Roads Ohio Bike Show Series Summer turned out to be a challenging one as we worked to adapt to ever changing guidelines and unprecedented challenges with many of our partners. However, looking back – we had some really successful shows. As always, we are grateful to everyone that came out to the shows and supported our “grass-roots”, informal format. It is OFFICIALLY over and we’ve just wrapped up our biggest show of the year – The Geneva Thunder Zone Bike Show! And yeah – it’s been a GREAT YEAR! After 2020 and with so much of the craziness still going on, we really weren’t sure how it was going to go. The riding community proved how resilient we are and sure enough – we are STILL riding and our shows were all well attended. Participation was great, even at the new locations; and more and more new exhibitors came out to show off their bikes!
South East H-D Harley-Ferrari Night
Things are mostly wrapping up in terms of the Ride-In shows which are our primary focus most of the year. Over the winter – we still have a few invitational exhibitions, but there are very few true open shows. It’s our hope, though, that we kick things off to start the year with some really strong ones. Plans are undeway and stay tuned for the announcements. If you haven’t already – be sure to like our facebook page (www.facebook.com/ThunderRoadsOhio) or follow our Blogs (ThunderRoadsOhio.com) for updates.
SHOW PICTURES We’ve posted over well over 1,200 Bike Show pictures from this year’s series on our Facebook page, sorted in Albums by the particular shows. You’re welcome to tag and share these as you’d like. We are working with some new partners to offer the ability to easily get these printed and sent to you – with just a few clicks. Hope to have an announcement on that shortly. Currently, however, we do have the means to get you posters – even big vinyl banners for your garage – of any images we have. Our partner, NEO PRO IMAGING ( www. neoproimaging.com ) is able to do some amazing things with pictures – such as metal or acrylic prints suitable for mounting on the wall or professionally displaying. Email us for more information BikeShowInfo@gmail.com

We’re able to produce full color vinyl banners of photos or your design – for less than $2.50 a square foot!*
INTERESTED IN HOSTING A TRO BIKE SHOW AT YOUR LOCATION IN 2022? We are currently reviewing locations and locking down dates for 2022. INVITATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP SHOWS All winners from the 2021 Summer Series are eligible to participate in these CASH winning shows. It’s our hope that both the OHIO BIKE WEEK SHOW and PISTON POWER SHOWS will be returning – but unfortunately, we were unable to make an announcement by the time we went to press with this edition. Unfortunately, both of these shows were cancelled due to the pandemic. Efforts are being made to finalize details on their return, but nothing could be made official yet. Thunder Roads Ohio has had a long-standing relationship with both Ohio Bike Week and the Piston Power Show and it’s certainly our hope that we can help support their return by hosting our Championship Shows as part of their programming. That’s why we’ve held out – rather then simply choosing a new location. Follow us on facebook (www.facebook.com/ThunderRoadsOhio) for announcements and updates on the upcoming INVITATIONAL SHOWS.
Start Something Old: Vintage Bike Shows
2022 SHOWS
Looking forward, we’ve made a commitment to further developing the Bike Show Series – with the addition of more larger, regional shows. We will still have smaller community shows, but we are adding more shows connected with FAIRS, FESTIVALS, and of course MAJOR MOTORCYCLE RALLIES and EVENTS.
Thunder Zone Vendor Areas For the larger weekend shows, we will be adding THUNDER ZONE Vendor areas to our layout. These vendor areas will offer a tremendous opportunity to reach not only thousands of riders – but far more, as many of the events embrace the entire community, drawing attendees from throughout their regions. For more information on vending at these events and to be put on a list for updates, email BikeShowInfo@gmail.com And we’ve already started adding NEW SHOWS and locking down dates for 2022!
VINTON COUNTY WILD TURKEY FESTIVAL May 5-8, 2022
This year we tried out a few shows in a new format – focusing on VINTAGE BIKES, 25 years or older. These were smaller shows, allowing us to try some new things. First off, we’d like to thank everyone that came out to these shows. We’d especially like to thank those that took the time to tell us how much they enjoyed the shows and share suggestions.
Thunder Roads Ohio will host a Customs and Classics Bike Show as a part of this early May festival in the streets of downtown McArthur, in Southeastern Ohio. The festival includes activities such as great nightly entertainment – including Mr. Speed and Confederate Railroad, a pagent, carnival rides and games, and of course lots of food and retail vendors.
For 2022, we are planning on several shows dedicated to South East H-D Harley-Ferrari Night VINTAGE bikes. All bikes will be welcome and we will recognize the fan favorites, but bikes will need to be 25 years or older in order to qualify for the BEST OF SHOW and PEOPLE’S CHOICE Awards. We will be doing photo shoots and interviews as well with those exhibiting classic bikes, with hopes to share in upcoming issues of Thunder Roads and nationally through our partners at ReasonsToRide.com We are also exploring options of filming these shows and the interviews, in order to share with those unable to attend.
LEXINGTON BLUEBERRY FESTIVAL August 18 – 21, 2022 Lexington welcomes Thunder Roads Ohio to their long running festival that features a entertainment, rides, games, festival food and more for the entire family.
FERRARI NIGHT at SOUTH EAST HARLEY-DAVIDSON, June 17, 2022 One of the longest running Bike Shows in Ohio returns in 2022, as South East HarleyDavidson brings Thunder Roads Ohio back to host their FERRARI NIGHT SHOW! This one is sure to bring out some of the most unique and rare bikes in Northeast Ohio. These are just a few that we’ve already locked down, but we have A LOT more in the works! Make sure that you’re following us on Facebook (www.Facebook.com/ThunderRoadsOhio) for updates as they are announced.

HOW TO RIDE A MOTORCYCLE IN SNOW AND ICY CONDITIONS For some, winter limits the bike to being a garage-based ornament. For others, a ride in snow is a necessity or just something you want to try. If you’re in the second group, read on. By Simon Hancocks, VisorDown.com Contributor Spring is a long time away, and a wintery ride through the snow can still be a rewarding experience, if it’s done correctly. How to Ride a Motorcycle in the Snow To go through the specifics of snow riding, lets break this down into some different types of snow – yes, there are a few! Riding in fresh snow? Fresh snow can be best described as virgin snow, as if you are the first vehicle to travel along that road. There are no tire tracks and the surface is smooth and soft and crunches under foot. First off, this is one of the better types of snow to ride on, as long as you can see the sides of the road and any traffic furniture that is. The reason for this is that as you ride over the surface of the snow, it’ll get compacted under your tires, filling the grooves within the tire in process. Molding the snow in this way will provide slightly more grip on the surface than riding on already compacted snow. How do you ride on already compacted snow? This could best be described as a snow-covered road that has already seen traffic. There are clearly defined tire tracks where car’s and traffic have driven. When confronted with this, it can be two easy to head to the already driven tracks left by other vehicles but that might not be the best choice. The compacted snow in the tire tracks can become polished and almost as slippery as sheet ice and once you are in a tire track it may prove tricky to get out of it! If you can, make for the center of the road and use the fresh snow in the center. Just take extra care if you must cross over any tire tracks at junctions and roundabouts. How do you ride a motorcycle in slush? The plows have now done their work and the bulk of the snow and ice is clearing. You’re now left with a slushy, wet and grey road to progress along. Riding on slush has one main advantage over compacted snow, as the bike’s tires might be able to cut through the melted snow, contacting the road surface beneath. There is a negative through, any areas that didn’t feel the full force of the gritter could be hiding a motorcyclist’s winter nemesis – black ice. As with any other riding of this kind, proceed with caution!

Top snow riding tips: Get in the right gear! Freezing to your core is never a nice feeling, it also makes your body tenser and less able to accurately react to messages from your brain. Wear your warmest gloves, textiles, and boots. Zip the jacket and trousers together to prevent any draughts and layer up beneath them. A cheap set of thin woolly gloves under your winter riding gloves might seem like a good idea, but for this kind of riding you need a deft touch. Heated gloves of grips (or both) is a better option. Get in the correct gear! No not clothing, your gearbox. For snow riding, you want to be in the highest gear you can possibly use at any given time. Doing this will suppress the power and torque of the engine and help prevent the bike from spinning up. If you can, try pulling away in second gear using low revs and slipping the clutch. Take a seat When riding off road and in mud, it’s best to be standing on a bike, not so much on snow. Keeping seated means your legs can easily and quickly come to your aid should you need them – and the chances are you will at some point Loosen up It’s hard to relax when riding in snow as it’s such a precarious situation but being tense will only make it worse. Loosen your shoulders up and keep a bend in your elbows. It’s easier said than done but makes a big difference to the amount of control you have. Know where you’re going Last-minute changes of direction are not advisable when riding on any kind of snow. Know your route and take your time. If you miss your turn, you’re better off riding around the bock then trying a U-turn. Don’t mix it up Riding a motorcycle in the dry is a complex thing to do, it’s just that after practicing for so long, your brain converts it all into precise and well-balanced reflex actions. Riding in snow is different, you don’t want to react to things, you want smooth, controlled actions. Plan for the road you can see ahead of you. When a corner approaches, slow the bike gently while in a straight line. Take the corner slowly and don’t be scared to trail one or both legs at your side. Only when the bike is out of the corner and in an upright position should you begin to increase speed again – not forgetting the rule about high gears! THUNDER THUNDER ROADS® ROADS® OHIO OHIO MAGAZINE MAGAZINE
Any amount of braking pressure applied with even the slightest amount of lean angle could result in you dropping it. The same goes for acceleration. Opening the throttle with lean on the bike – even with the trickest traction control (which is generally calibrated for normal wet or dry conditions) – could result in the rear spinning up and sliding out from under you. A Quickshifter might not be the best option If your bike has a quickshifter, it may be best to clutch-shift normally. The act of feeding the power back in on the clutch is smooth and will upset the bike and the tyres less than a quickshifter’s mechanical brutality. Everything takes longer in snow Stopping, accelerating and cornering will all have to be approached in a slower, calmer and more measured way. If following another vehicle, keep at least double the distance back than you would in the wet. Start braking twice as early as you normally would.
Leave the Supercorsas in the garage They won't heat up, they won't clear snow and they won't provide much more grip than a slick! Some decent adventure bike tires or even deeply grooved and fairly new touring boots will be 100% more suitable. Be bright Hi-vis isn’t cool or sexy, but in a snowstorm, it will massively increase your chances of being spotted by another road user. Even some reflective stickers on your lid are better than nothing. The other vehicles on the road will take longer to stop, let’s give them more chance of spotting us so they can start braking earlier. PLEASE NOTE: We are NOT recommending that you head out to ride in the snow – unless you are comfortable doing so with the right gear and equipment. ALWAYS wear proper safety gear. We are ALSO not recommending making any modifications to bikes or tires that might impact the handling or overall safety of the bike.
Keep your visor clear Don’t make the act of riding in the snow any harder than it needs to be! Keep your visor clear and mist and snow-free. Invest in a breath guard and fit the correct Pinlock for your lid. Keep you bonce warm too, a thin balaclava under your lid will help keep the winter chills at bay and will aid concentration.

Riding in the Snow By Dysco, ADVRider.com Contributor Success depends a lot on the bike, and a lot on the rider. If you're new to riding, starting on the snow cold be a pretty bad idea, especially if you're going to be in traffic. Here's a few other things to think about: Ground Clearance: If your engine sits 5" off the ground, then a 6" pile of snow will cause your engine to push against it and you'll lose momentum. Now apply this to 2 FEET of snow (parking lots and residential streets) and you'll be doing a LOT of work to get the bike through. It's a workout on your body and your clutch. Seat Height: You're gonna use your feet. It's not pussing out to dab in the snow. I use a foot outrigger at speeds from 0-75MPH when the bike slides, wobbles, or when I got bored. On snow and ice your foot glides along and it's a great balancing tool. You don't want to be 4 feet off the ground or you'll be falling over all the time. Also, think of the leverage you'll need to hold yourself up if your feet have no grip- you want to be able to lock that foot way out from the bike and make your tripod bigger. Compatible Wheels: It helps to have REAL DOT knobbies if you want a reliable snow bike. Others have done great with a more street-oriented dual-sort tire like Gripsters, but they're not ideal for a lot of fresh snow and slush. I used Kenda Trakmaster IIs because they're cheap and last at least 3,000 miles with the studs. I had one front go 8k. They make them in a 17" up to 160mm wide. If you don't have a 21" front rim, you may have to use a rear-use tire on the front which KILLS your cornering confidence and ability. Basically, you turn like a rookie when you're running that setup but It's stable. A 21" Dunlop D606 I put on a KLR650 one year handled great on the dry and took studs with no problems. My F650GS with the 19" rear on the front end was miserable in the corners. Weight: I believe heavier is better- more weight on each knob gets it farther into the snow and makes things more stable. I.E. a 200lb dirtbike will be a handfull and my 400lb BMW will ride smoothly. I also tried to keep the tank full when I knew it was going to snow. Keep in mind this is more weight you'll have to hold up in the slippery stuff and more weight to potentially pick up if you go down. Studs: I use street-legal automobile studs on knobby tires. Ice screws, sheet metal screws, and spikes aren't what I'm talking about. Sheet metal screws can be used in an emergency, but tire studs have been proven to help a motorcycle get around handily on snow and ice. There are helpful instructional websites and videos online for studding, or you can read on for how others are doing it.

THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE
Stopping with studs: If you have studs, you have to slow down on dry pavement and leave greater braking distances. The only part of the tire you need to stud is the middle and that's what you stop with. You'll also engine-brake a lot more because locking the front becomes a lot easier with less rubber and more metal on the ground. I slide the rear end a lot at stops with the engine and it's pretty effective. On snow, slush, and dry pavement, my stopping distance is about the same. On ice, it all depends on how fast you're going. This doesn't mean your stopping distances will double, only that you'll have to ride less aggressively if you're an aggressive rider. If you're a calmer rider, you may not even notice a difference. The Good Stuff: You can maintain a pretty high rate of speed without the instability that you'll get in a car- basically because the gyroscopic forces of a bike wheel have more effect than car wheels. This means you can do normal highway speeds on the highway... in anything but unpacked snow over 2-3". I've seen indicated speeds of 85MPH on compact snow- with NO traffic around me. I can accelerate with minimal slipping on any surface faster than any 4X4 I've met. In a straight line, the traction is unbeatable on the snow and corners can be taken at a reasonable pace if you know what you're doing. Changes of direction need to be planned and executed with a decent amount of concentration. Fast avoidance maneuvers are possible depending on conditions but I try not to get into situations requiring them. Passengers: It can be done safely but I only reccomend taking passengers with a LOT of riding experience who ride very neutralany movement can bring you down around a corner or over a bump. Dirt: Like a car, your bike will get REALLY dirty when it snows. So will you. Get tough gear that will last sand rubbing into it and ice forming on it. You can't be afraid to scratch your bike and you may go a month without being able to wash it because of sub-freezing temps. Experience: On my BMW F650GS in a bad winter storm with sleet, snow, ice, and generally awful conditions on my 32 mile commute between Broomfield and Aurora, CO. On a Honda Ruckus with studded 10" tires, I found that packed snow was lots of fun, but tracked snow and loose snow was miserable because of the tiny wheel diameter- the small wheels followed tracks randomly.

2021 Holiday Gift Suggestions The Holiday Season is a time of sharing and the giving of gifts between friends and family. If you have riders on your list, we would like to offer some suggestions for unique and practical gifts that any rider might appreciate. The following pages are a mix of items and services offered by Thunder Roads Ohio and some of our partners. Some of our suggestions are practical items that a rider might not consider or just over look. An AMA or ABATE Membership, for instance, is something that any biker or enthusiast will appreciate but might not get themselves. Helmets, good gloves, or protective riding boots are other items that riders can always use – but often neglect for themselves. It’s also worth mentioning that you might consider getting a little something for your “Iron Steed” as well. People think nothing of getting gifts for dogs and cats – so why not for your bike? And as luck would have it, we might have a few suggestions for stuff your bike would love as well!
Independent Shop T’s and Gear If you’re looking to get a cool motorcycle themed shirt or gear for your favorite rider this Christmas – don’t pick up anything from the stack at the Big Box Store- especially if it features any of the TV bike shops or soap opera clubs. You really don’t want to be the guy or gal riding up in your SOA or Orange County Choppers shirt to Bike Night. And you don’t really want to be responsible for sending out your loved ones like that either! A MUCH cooler option is a shirt from a local independent bike shop. A shirt from the local shop will be appreciated much more and certainly convey much more thought and appreciation for the iron in the garage – not to mention the local motorcycle scene!
Trailer Hitch Motorcycle Carrier There are a lot of times when you need to bring more than your bike can carry – or you simply want your truck / car as well as your bike on a trip. If you’re taking your dirt bike to the track, a smaller bike to a rally, your café racer to a shop, or even your scooter on vacation – there is a more convenient alternative to dragging a trailer around with you. Recommended Option: The Trackside Motorcycle Carrier from RevZilla.com “The Trackside motorcycle carrier is an ideal solution for riders who want to bring their bikes along on trips. It can support up to 500 pounds and it even includes a built-in loading ramp. Convenient holes accept ratchet strap hooks to secure the bike while transporting.” Available at RevZilla.com (www.Revzilla.com/motorcycle/ trackside-motorcycle-carrier)

AMA Membership
American Motorcyclist Association Membership offers so much! The perfect gift for the motorcycle enthusiast that hasn’t gotten around to signing up. The AMA represents motorcycle owners and enthusiasts all across the country – and membership is essential to ensuring the rights of riders in these turbulent times. AMA membership also has plenty of money-saving, practical aspects as well – including free AMA Roadside Assistance—which covers all the member’s vehicles and those of the member’s family members—is worth many times the $49 membership dues alone. 22 22

Quality Boots Far too often we scrimp on the little things that can really make a difference in our lives. And there’s probably no better example of that than when it comes to footwear – especially in terms of riding boots. Proper, comfortable riding boots can make all the difference after a long day of riding, working, or simply walking. Far too often, though, we scrimp on boots refusing to spend a few more dollars for a step up in quality that might transform our entire day. For something classy – nothing jazzes up an outfit like a nice pair of exotic boots. For ladies or men, stylish cowboy boots can transform your t-shirt and jeans outfit into the stuff of rockstars.

When it comes to boots – there’s one stop that immediately comes to mind and that’s the Avon Boot Shop. Avon Boot is one of the coolest stops I know when it comes to finding cool practical stuff for riders. From quality leathers to an endless array of boots - Avon Boot is a great place to shop. For the guys, not only do they have boots - they just happen to have a nice selection of very stylish purses and other lady stuff for that special gift. You can get something all pretty and lady like, without having to go into one of those shops that will leave you smelling like something dainty by the time you walk out the door. Plus, they have a GREAT staff that is extremely helpful – always a HUGE BONUS!
Quality Socks! Good quality socks can make all the difference, especially if you’re going on a long distance ride or riding in challenging weather. And it’s something that most riders never consider – and thus makes the perfect gift! Years ago, we discovered ThermoHair socks. These are high quality, 75% kid mohair socks that offer the softness of cashmere, but the incredible strength of mohair. It’s a family business located in Ontario, Canada – and they even raise their own Angora goats. You can check them out on Facebook – www. Facebook.com/Thermohair

THE X-BOX SLAYERS The Harley-Davidson IRONe / Stacyc E Drive Balance Bikes We first saw the Stacyc electric balance bikes when they were introduced at the 2017 AIMExpo in Columbus. Right from the get-go, we knew these would be a game changer for our youngest riders. If you want to get your youngest kids off the video games and out riding – this is the deal, and it doesn’t matter if they’ve ever ridden a bike before. These will get them riding in no time! The Stacyc’s are designed to introduce kids to two wheeled travel. Tyler was just turning 5, when we first introduced him to the powered balance bikes. He was still on training wheels and wanted nothing to do with taking them off. After watching his brother riding around on the Stacyc – he jumped on and within 5 minutes was ripping around the yard like a Pro. No exaggeration at all – he simply twisted the throttle and was off riding with his feet off the ground within 10-15 feet. And he never looked back. The bikes are offered in two versions – a 12” and a 16” version. This refers to the size of the tires, but there are a few other differences as well in terms of the power output and the battery provided. According to Stacyc – the 12eDRIVE is perfect for 3-5 year olds under 75lbs with a 14-20” inseam, while the 16eDRIVE is intended for 4-7 year olds also under 75 lbs – with a 18-24” inseam. Obviously there’s some overlap in terms of the kids they are intended for – and there’s only $50 separating the two models. So, if there’s any doubt in your mind – we would recommend you go with the larger 16” sized bike if your child fits within their recommended guidelines – REGARDLESS of their previous riding experience. All of the bikes have very simple controls that allow parents to limit speeds to help the kids feel comfortable and safe on the bikes. So, it’s a simple matter of turning the bikes down for a younger rider, and with the adjustable seat – it should be easy to fit as well.

Tactical Gear (REAL gear, that is…) Quality gear always makes a great gift, but make sure that you take the time to consider where you’re getting it. Just because it’s black or camo – and has Velcro on it, doesn’t mean that it’s going to last or even be slightly reliable in a pinch. We strongly recommend REAL tactical gear that is used by the professionals – first responders and those in the service. That doesn’t mean the overpriced, fancy brands that simply wrap themselves in the flag and then charge $30 for a t-shirt or $200 for a pair of boots with a zipper. Thunder Roads Ohio is proud to offer a direct link to LA POLICE GEAR through our website. This special link offers special deals and savings for our readers. And this is REAL, QUALITY gear that is designed and built specifically for first responders, tactical response teams, and military applications. And it’s priced for those actually working the streets – because the company was founded by folks actually on duty looking for a reliable, cost-effective option. Stuff we’d recommend – Duty Boots – lightweight, zipper access, with support. Medic / First Aid Kits – ready to go packs that can be stored on the bike or kept handy. Flashlights, knives, and other cool stuff – all found on the website.

“Should I buy heated grips or heated
Getting Older Without Getting Old- Extending Your Riding Years Part 2- Trailering to Events Last month we talked about transitioning to a smaller bike that is lighter and easier to handle, but not as desirable for long distance riding. This time we explore solving the long distance problem by hauling the bike on a trailer. Hauling a bike is nothing new for me- I've been hauling dirt bikes since the late 1960s on trailers or in the bed of my pickup truck. I still do that with my Suzuki DRZ400E dual-sport bike, as I can just ride it up an aluminum ramp into the bed of my old Ford Ranger. It only takes a minute and I can do it by myself, but then it only weighs about 315 pounds and has high ground clearance. My Suzuki 650 Wee Strom weighs about 500 pounds loaded and doesn't have as much ground clearance under the motor, so it's a completely different story. It needs to go on a trailer towed behind the truck. Last June, the Motorcycle Sport Touring Association's national STAR rally was at Canaan Valley, West Virginia, about 350 miles from home. I decided to borrow a nice aluminum trailer from a friend and haul both the Wee Strom and the DRZ to the event.
very often. One compromise is to rent a U-Haul motorcycle trailer for $15/day. They are well-designed and very low to the ground to make loading easy. I could rent for many days at less cost than buying a decent trailer, but would still have to book it, pick it up and drop it off. Time start over on this problem. I searched YouTube for bike hauling ideas and found videos where people easily rode full size bikes into the beds of their trucks using Black Widow or Big Boy ramps. These ramps are 10-12 feet long with a hinge in the middle so they fold in half for storage or putting in the bed of the truck. They come in three sections to make the individual pieces lighter and easier to load. Most important, the upper portion is arched to reduce the angle between the ramp and the tailgate. The added length and more gentle angle enable sitting on the bike and safely backing it down as well. I can hang them on the wall of my garage so storage is not a problem.
My friend brought the trailer to me and helped me connect it to the truck. Its rails are about 14 inches off the ground and there is a loading rail that goes with it. I quickly found the trailer rails are too far off the ground for me to get the bikes on or off by myself, so I had to get a neighbor to help. The V6 engine in the Ranger did a good job even in the mountains of West Virginia and I got almost 14 MPG on the trip. On the way there I got into heavy thunderstorms and was happy to be safe and dry in the cab of the truck. When I arrived at the rally there were plenty of friends around to help unload and load the bikes. It was a very fun week! The drive home was no problem and a friend helped me unload the bikes. Then I had to take the trailer back to my friend who lives about thirty miles away. Is this the way to go in the future? My thoughts: 1. Being able to have two bikes at the event was a luxury. 2. Avoiding discomfort from weather extremes on the trip was nice. 3. Getting the trailer, loading, unloading multiple times and dropping it off afterward collectively took an entire day. 4. Having to get help with loading and unloading at home is a hassle. How could I make trailering better/easier? 1. Use a different trailer that is lower and has a wide ramp to enable riding the bikes onto it. That would solve the assistance needed problem. 2. Get my own trailer so I don't have to go back and forth borrowing/renting them. The problem with buying a trailer is that I don't have anywhere to store it at home. It's also a lot of money for something I won't use 28 28

These ramps cost $700-1500 per set, but one of the videos suggested looking for used ones on Craigslist. I easily found a set of Black Widow ramps in excellent condition for less than $300 nearby. The most critical part of loading is adequate speed going up the ramp. I found that about 10 mph at a fast idle in first gear is what is needed. Start thirty to forty feet from the ramp so you are completely stable and you will be able to ride right up onto the truck bed. I was more intimidated about the prospect of backing down but that turned out to be easier than riding up. With the engine off you can put the bike in first gear and release the clutch to brake the rear wheel. Control the front brake with the handlebar lever. You can back up is small increments and stop whenever you wish to improve your footing. Now I can load or unload the bike in the truck bed in less than fifteen minutes and be on my way.

This is a good solution for me. I don't have to rent or borrow, pick up or return anything. I don't need help loading/unloading, and there are no problems parking or backing up the truck like with a trailer. Will I quit riding to events now that I have an easy alternative? I might haul to an event that's over 500 miles away or at times when the weather is uncertain. On the other hand, I don't have many aches or pains, plus my bikes are so capable and comfortable that it's still more fun to ride them to just about every event I attend. That is sure to change over time, but for now I have secured a backup plan for the future by having a lighter bike to ride and the means to haul it conveniently if I wish.

Slow Cooker Mushroom and Wild Rice Soup 4 tablespoons unsalted butter (1/2 stick) ¼ cup all-purpose flour 5 cups vegetable or chicken stock, plus more as needed ¼ cup dry white wine (see Tip) 2 pounds mixed mushrooms (such as cremini and shiitake), tough stems removed, chopped into 1/2- to 1-inch pieces 1 cup wild rice (about 6 ounces) 2 celery stalks, finely chopped 1 small yellow or red onion, grated or minced 1 large carrot, peeled and finely chopped 6 garlic cloves, smashed and chopped 3 sprigs fresh thyme or 1 teaspoon dried thyme 1 teaspoon garlic powder Kosher salt and black pepper ½ cup sour cream Chopped scallions or chives and fresh dill, for topping
Crisp Potato Cake 2 pounds (about 3 medium) potatoes, peeled and sliced very thinly 1 tablespoon olive oil, or as needed Freshly ground nutmeg Freshly ground black pepper 1 tablespoon minced fresh parsley 1 tablespoon minced garlic Salt Fresh thyme leaves for garnish (optional)
1. Put the butter in a microwave-safe container (a liquid measuring cup works well) and microwave until the butter is completely melted, 30 seconds to 1 minute. With a fork, whisk the flour into the butter to make a smooth mixture the texture of cake batter, then microwave until the roux is steaming hot and bubbling slightly around the edges, about 30 seconds.
1. Pat potatoes dry if very starchy or moist. In a sauté pan large enough to fit potato slices in just two layers, spread 1 tablespoon oil and sprinkle with nutmeg and pepper to taste. Starting in center, arrange potato slices in a closely overlapping, attractive spiral. When pan is filled, repeat to make a second layer.
2. Scrape the roux into a 6- to 8-quart slow cooker and whisk in the stock and wine. Stir in the mushrooms, wild rice, celery, onion, carrot, chopped garlic, thyme and garlic powder. Season with 1 teaspoon salt and several generous grinds of black pepper. Cook on high until most of the rice grains are just slightly split open and the vegetables are tender, about 4 hours. (The soup can hold for 1 to 2 hours on the warm setting, but eventually the wild rice will overcook.)
2. Place pan over medium heat and cover. Slowly cook potatoes until well browned on underside, about 15 minutes, occasionally shaking pan gently to avoid sticking. Wipe inside of lid as needed to keep it dry. 3. Press potatoes down with a flat spatula and remove from heat. Place a larger platter over pan and flip it upside down, transferring potatoes to the platter. Check pan to make sure it is clean and has enough oil to keep potatoes from sticking. 4. Slide potatoes, raw side down, back into pan, and return to medium heat. Cover and cook until well browned, about 15 minutes. Meanwhile, prepare a persillade by combining parsley and garlic in a small bowl. To serve, slide onto a serving platter, season to taste with salt, and garnish with persillade or thyme.
3. Turn the heat to warm. Put the sour cream in a small bowl and slowly whisk in a few spoonfuls of the hot soup until smooth, then stir the mixture into the soup. (This prevents the sour cream from separating.) If you’d like the soup to be thinner, whisk in warm broth or water to the desired consistency. Taste the soup and add more salt and pepper to taste. 4. Divide the soup among bowls and top with chopped scallions or chives and dill. Reheat any leftovers on low until warm. (Boiling can cause the sour cream to break.)

It was inspired by Cole’s favorite TV show – Jake and the Neverland Pirates! When you find it, shoot us an email at BuckeyeThunderRun@ gmail.com with SCAVENGER HUNT in the subject line. Let us know what page and exactly where the logo is in this month’s magazine and we will put you in the drawing for some great TRO prizes – including some great gear and subscriptions to the magazine!
We’d also like to thank all of our subscribers... and of course the avid readers that bring it all together.Thank you for making all of this possible, for supporting this organization, and our families. Sincerely, The Thunder Roads Ohio Team.
