FROM THE PUBLISHER So how did you spend 2020? More importantly – how will you close it out? This has been a challenging year for many of us. COVID has essentially turned our country upside down in many ways and cancelled countless rides, rallies, and events which were otherwise considered staples of our summer routine. Even OHIO BIKE WEEK – “The Largest Motorcycle Event in the Midwest” was cancelled due to restrictions by the State. As Summer draws to a close and we enter into the Fall riding season, many of the local bike nights and rides are starting to re-appear as we seem to simply accept the risk (and the masks) and choose to RIDE ON. We were able to finally host THE RIDE TO BE HEARD and the 8th Annual Sassy’s Poker Run went off and raised the most money it’s ever raised! The B-Club and Odd Fellow’s worked together and pulled off a great event – and then presented a check for over $23,000 to a local family in need! Thunder Roads Ohio has been a partner since this ride started, but this was one for the books as hard working volunteers and Sassy’s remained focused on the event and their commitment to help a young man struggling with Cancer. The event wasn’t what everyone wanted or originally envisioned – but much like everything this year, we worked through the challenges while keeping an eye on what really mattered. In this case, it was making a difference for folks in need. As 2020 has progressed and we’ve come to terms with a lot of the new realities – many have started to make the most of things and maybe even celebrate the opportunities they have presented. Pro-sports and movie theatres have given way to outdoor activities such as hiking, paddling, and of course riding! Powersports sales have exploded and used kids quads sell for twice what they went for last year on Facebook marketplace. Families are getting re-acquainted with each as folks were forced to work from home – while daycare closures kept the kids there as well. In most cases, people started looking for new things to do – and many times this involved riding and powersports! I spent the summer teaching my boys how to ride quads and race through the woods. We just got back from our first trip to an off-road park – where we had one of the most incredible experiences as a family. My youngest – just 5 – remarked as he went to bed, “That was the scariest thing I’ve ever done! Can we do it again tomorrow?!” It turns out that riding is the perfect opportunity to social distance – as you head out onto the road and escape, often by yourself or with a close loved one. And more and more new riders are getting out as well, with new rider classes selling out all across the country. Fall is now upon us – and our country continues to re-awake! I’d urge everyone to stay focused on the basics and what really matters. Let’s get out and ride – not just for the big events and organized rides, but for the sake of getting out and enjoying the company of friends as you explore new roads.

Certainly let’s support the local events and ride stops – but not just the ones we already know, let’s stop at that little burger place you’ve always heard about. Even if it is a 3 hour ride… As with much of life – 2020 is really what you choose to make of it. Let’s make the most of the Fall riding seasons and make up for lost time this summer! That’s my plan and I hope to see you out there!

2020 Veterans Edition
Next month we will be producing our 3rd Annual Veterans Edition of Thunder Roads Ohio. This edition of the magazine is intended to not only honor but to also serve as a resource for US Veterans and their families in terms of organizations, events, and opportunities available to them. It’s our third year of publishing this special themed edition – and we are proud of what we’ve accomplished the last several years. Our 2019 Veterans Edition reached over 250,000 Veterans, Riders, and their families. In it, we showcased events all across Ohio – both Veterans Days events and Fall / Winter programs. We also recognized service organization and support groups dedicated to supporting veterans in our local communities. In addition, we shared information on various programs and opportunities available to service members, Vets and their families. We’d like to invite you to be a part of this Edition. If you have an event that you’d like listed, let us know. If you’d like to place a notice or help sponsor magazines for Vets in your area – let us know. We also have discounted sponsorship rates for those looking to make a statement or simply support our efforts to serve. Your support can allow us to feature a local veterans group or contribute to one of our focus organizations – all honoring and serving our local vets and hometown heroes. This has been a challenging year for us all – and we could use your help to honor and support those that have served. Please email us at ThunderRoadsOhio@gmail.com for information on how you can help sponsor this effort.
Share Your Veterans Day or Veteran oriented Event We always publish non-profit events for free – but for this edition we will make an extra effort to include even more events and flyers as they relate to veterans. Events can be entered for FREE at ReasonsToRide.com You can also email us at Events@ ReasonsToRide.com if you’d like to sponsor a flyer or other notice within the Magazine and online. It can cost as little as $50 to feature your event within the magazine as part of this special promotion! Share Pics of Your Veteran / Service Themed Bikes We are looking to showcase custom motorcycles with a Veterans or Service theme to them. Please email us pictures of your motorcycle, along with details on who should receive credit for the build / paint, etc. And feel free to share any story behind the bike or who it’s honoring. You can email these to ThunderRoadsOhio@gmail.com and please include SERVICE BIKE in the subject line. Honoring Our Veterans We will have a limited amount of space to honor Ohio Vets who ride both as part of the magazine and online through our Facebook page. If you’d like to send us a picture – ideally with their motorcycle or a service pic – we will do our best to include them. Of course, we can’t include everyone – but we will do our best. Please feel free to share any additional information that you’d like – including details on service or what they are doing now. You can email these to ThunderRoadsOhio@gmail.com and please include VETERAN RIDER in the subject line.

THUNDER RUN UPDATE
Due to COVID 19 and the countless challenges and concerns that it presents both to venues and riders, we have decided to SUSPEND many of the traditional aspects of the Buckeye Thunder Run. HOWEVER, riders are STILL able to win prizes every time that they ride by simply checking in at their favorite Ride Stops on Facebook. When you’re out riding, you simply need to take a picture of yourself, your bike, your friends and post it to Facebook on your personal page. On the post, “check-in” at the location and include the hashtag #ThunderRun. You simply need to include #ThunderRun in the comment section of your post. For instance – “Stopped by Bear’s Vintage Metal Works in Ravenna to pick up my Thunder Roads and ended up getting a NEW SEAT!" #ThunderRun We will be scanning for the #ThunderRun hashtag and awarding prizes throughout the year - including the chance to win a 2020 Harley-Davidson Electra-Glide Standard! So get out and RIDE to WIN!
JOIN THE CREW:
Opportunities for local riders to help support their riding community. With the 2020 Riding Season finally getting underway, it’s clear that there will be a much greater demand for local coverage across the state as more riders will be staying closer to home for smaller rides and events. This means that TRO will need even more help covering these events – both getting the word out in advance and taking pictures and covering the events as they happen. As always, Local Road Reps will have the opportunity to make some extra cash covering their area – if they’d like. But for many, the real appeal is being able to help these local events succeed and share their story with the rest of the state! The cool part, though, is that you don’t have to sacrifice one for the other. You can both help the local riding community and make some $$$ doing what you love! How cool is that?! MOTORCYCLE MINISTRIES Where are you? Have you ever just stopped in the middle of a road and wondered, “Where am I?” A kind of sick feeling rushes over you for just a moment and then…Boom! It all clears up, you get your bearings and off you go again. Yet, for that moment you had to wonder what that was all about and it left you with a sense of panic that lets you know you do not want to feel that again! Some people are born knowing exactly what their purpose is and they seem to run after it most all their lives. Others have a harder road to travel and the purpose doesn’t always seem to shine out like that. However, each one of us has purpose. If you have kids, you can see it in them. One is mechanical, able to look at something and figure out how it works. They cannot seem to get away from the temptation of checking out how a toy works. I see that in my great grandson, he doesn’t just play with toys, he examines them. How do the wheels turn? How does it make that sound? It’s funny to watch, however, I can see his gifting is towards the mechanical aspect of things, so his future is destined to be in some sort of engineering or building. How do I know
that? Just by observation. Now the trick is to motivate him to use that gift. Encourage and empower him to succeed. After all… isn’t that what we all want to do? Succeed? So where are you today? What makes you the most satisfied? Take a good look at yourself and ask, “Am I using the gifts I have to my fullest? Am I where I should be? Do I even know what I am supposed to be doing?? Honestly, most of us don’t and that’s okay. There’s really only one way of finding out and that is to go to the source….the One who created you. He knows what you are really good at and so do most of the people around you. It’s just that instead of seeking what makes us fulfilled, we settle for what is in front of us at the moment.
know where I am at, (there’s room for error!). God has opened doors that cannot be imagined with the human brain, closed some that needed closed. Yet in all of that, He always leads me to the place I need to be. So take a look at what tools you have been given, get ready to be polished up, prepare yourself for the journey because God has a plan and has already given you a purpose, you just need to step in and let Him take you there! It’s October…don’t let this article spook you! It’s just an observation and a loving nudge to help you succeed! 45 and still going! Happy Anniversary CMA!!! Meet you where you are…. Mary G.
Look, I have known since I was a kid that a microphone would be my friend, a stage would be my platform and a typewriter, pen and ink would be my tools, He added the love of motorcycles for good measure! I sing, preach, write and ride. I’m not always perfect at what I do and am not always sure of where I am going, but I usually always

Long Way Up
They’re off again – this time riding through South America and on electric bikes! as they drop their bikes, face the dangers, and sit back in awe as they experience the magic and wonder of Africa. Anyone that’s ever ridden a motorcycle has most likely found themselves dreaming of what it might be like to simply take off and ride. To go on a great long distance trip with a friend or two and simply explore the world – it’s something that we all find ourselves imagining, but few of us have the time and resources to really do it. Let alone 3 times. Well, it turns out that if you make a bunch of movies – including a few Star Wars blockbusters – you have the resources and time to take such a trip. And after you have one under your belt, folks are more willing to help support and get behind another such trip – or two. That’s the situation Ewan McGregor and his buddy, Charley Boorman, have found themselves in. They are two hard core riders that love to explore. And thankfully, they have the resources and following to support them bringing us all along on the ride with them. Back in 2004, they embarked on their first trip – going from London to New York, the “LONG WAY ROUND” – as in through Europe, Russia, and Mongolia, and then down through Alaska and Canada to the US and New York City. They brought along a film crew and created a pretty cool series that many consider one of the best motorcycle features ever produced. They covered more than 20,000 miles in four months and documented their entire trip. They took photos, wrote in diaries by the campfire, and took a lot of video. From the comfort of your own home, you’re able to follow along and share their journey. You can witness the exhaustion, the challenges, and the spectacle they experienced. And it’s all presented in a relatively informal manner, as if being told by a buddy. You can check it out online at longwayround.com
Then twelve years later, they decided to do it again. To change things up, they are tackling South and Central America – and they are doing it “green”. They decided to ride a pair of prototype Harley-Davidson Livewires and have their crew in Rivian electric trucks. So, it’s an “all-electric” journey traveling through some of the most remote and desolate parts of the world. Rivian actually installed charging stations along the way for them. They ride through 13 countries, zigzagging between Argentina and Chile, then northward through Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, up through Central America (Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras and Guatemala), then finally into Mexico and ending in Los Angeles, California. It’s a 13,000 mile trip through entirely new landscapes, with a set of entirely new challenges. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, the pair talked about what it was like making the trip on electric motorcycles."It was a steep learning curve for us," Boorman admitted. "There's all that range anxiety syndrome that you have when you first go into it, like, will you make it?" "What was lovely about it, is that you would get to these places, in a youth hostel or a B&B or somewhere, and you say, 'Look, do
you mind if we plug in?' and people were absolutely like, 'Yeah, come on in,' and, 'Wow, what a trip!' Suddenly you're not just plugging in your bike but you're plugging into people's lives in a very different way, and that brought on loads of experiences for us," Boorman noted. Boorman recalls riding by a solar farm in Costa Rica and knocking on the fence to ask to check it out. "They let us in and let us plug in our bikes as they showed us around and explained how everything worked. And our bikes were being charged directly by the sun." At one point in the trip, they discovered just how removed they were from the world they knew – when they asked a group of school children if they were familiar with Star Wars – which Ewan McGregor starred in as Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Then in 2007, they took off again – going from John O’Groats in Scotland to Cape Town in Africa. Inspired by a UNICEF visit to Africa, the pair decided to load up two new BMW’s and take a 15,000 mile ride to explore the “dark continent” and show the world what Africa is truly like. It’s an incredible journey through spectacular scenery and they hold nothing back. You can find the videos online or order the DVD set – and join Ewan and Charley as they seem to share everything. You’re there 16

"We were in the top of this tiny little mountain village in Peru, it was amazing," the actor recalled. "We're doing a UNICEF visit in a school that teaches the kids in their indigenous language... It was nice to be up there, but of course, they are living a very different life than ours and they had not seen any of my movies." We’d really encourage you to check out the LONG WAY UP – maybe after you’ve gone back and watched the LONG WAY ROUND and LONG WAY DOWN, if you missed those. These aren’t simply videos of two rich guys riding around on BMW’s. This is the story of two friends getting out and really riding. They are riding around the world and experiencing a trip that few of us could do on our own – but thankfully we can “ride” along with them. Chances are that you’ll relate to a lot of what they go through – and you’ll find yourself inspired to get out on your bike and RIDE!
Machu Piccu Talking about the sights along the way, and what really stood out for them on this particular journey, McGregor sites the landscape of the Atacama Desert in Chile as "spectacular," and he goes on to talk about getting to see Machu Picchu. The clouds part in Machu Piccu, Courtesy of Apple TV+ "In one of my classrooms when I was at school, there was a poster of Machu Picchu. I didn't do very well in school, but I got A's in daydreaming, so I would spend a lot of time daydreaming about Machu Picchu, like it was this mythical place that I'd never see. And then we got to visit it." When they arrived the UNESCO Heritage Site, recounts McGregor, "it was shrouded in cloud." Disappointment set in, "We'd come on a day where you're not going to see anything," McGregor says. But after exploring in different directions for a time, the two reunited, and "then the clouds parted to reveal Machu Picchu," says McGregor. "It was sort of like a dream come true." The Long Way Up is currently available on Apple TV+ which is available on the Apple TV app on iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, iPod touch, Mac, select Samsung and LG smart TVs, Amazon Fire TV and Roku devices, as well as at tv.apple.com, for $4.99 per month with a seven-day free trial. I’m pretty sure that I could watch all of the episodes in 7 days – especially with a few late night binge sessions! Ride On! THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

Sport Touring Corner By Norm Kern, MSTA Editor / ReasonsToRide.com Contributor

If I had to come up with one word to describe this year's MSTA FlyBy Week, it would be uncertainty. With Covid19 hanging over our heads, no one knew in advance how risky it would be to host or attend the rally.
All but a few of our Motorcycle Sport Touring Association events have been cancelled this year, so it was especially important to have FlyBy Week if at all possible so our members can salvage at least a part of the riding season. That said, we needed to make attending as safe as possible, not only for our attendees, but for the community as well. We told attendees to wear masks and social distance before coming to Marietta, Ohio, and not attend unless they felt 100% well. People come to FlyBy Week to ride the fun roads of SE Ohio and N West Virginia. Riding outdoors in small groups is one of the best ways to enjoy time with friends and stay safe from COVID. 2020 was the best year ever for FlyBy Week routes- we had 25 to choose from,

Social distancing at the hotel was our greatest challenge. Fortunately, our trademark "Outdoor Lounge" with lots of chairs and flexible outdoor seating enabled attendees to socialize while maintaining social distancing,. The only other gathering place was the large registration room, which has a capacity of over 80 people but never had more than about 20 present.
We had to eliminate the evening “dinner tours” where we normally provide transportation for dining downtown at the many nice bars and restaurants Marietta has to offer. Individuals with cars, trucks etc. filled in the gap on their own. Likewise we had to eliminate the Friday and Saturday buffet dinners and just provide bottled water and packaged snacks. Fortunately a nearby grill & pub, Wings Etc, had a huge menu selection and fast delivery service to the hotel. Everyone who ordered was very happy with the food. Breakfast at the Baymont Inn was officially closed, but for FlyBy Week attendees they provided breakfast burritos that could be heated in your room, waffles, cereal, milk and juice. So how did it all go? As usual, attendance was light early in the week, but more people arrived each day, with most arriving Thursday and Friday. The initial weather forecast was for nice weather for the entire week, but that changed due to the remnants of hurricane Laura coming THUNDERROADSOHIO.COM THUNDERROADSOHIO.COM

ashore in the Texas Gulf. Thunderstorms were forecast for Marietta, Thursday through Saturday. This kept about 20% of the people away. The rest came anyway. Rob Bowling of Dayton, Ohio, had the typical reaction. "I've already got the time off from work and have missed most events this year due to COVID, so I'm coming and riding anyway!"
FlyBy Week event proceeds raised $1250 for the Dan Clark fund, which is a MSTA benefit to reimburse members for safety related expenses such as riding gear and advanced rider education courses. Here's a big Tip of the Helmet to everyone who attended and helped out.
Predictions of thunderstorms are common in late August and their scattered nature means that if you pay attention to radar and local conditions, you can choose a time and direction for your ride that will keep you dry.
FlyBy week will return to Marietta at a new venue next year. Mark your calendar for August 2329, 2021. Hope to see you there. The 2021 web site will be online January 1st at
For example, our Thursday riding group did the lunch ride to Beallsville Diner in Beallsville, Ohio. We had partly cloudy skies and perfect conditions through lunch, but a thunderstorm moved in when we were ready to leave. We waited about ten minutes until it became a light sprinkle. The afternoon route took us west, quickly into dry conditions, and by the time the route turned South back toward Marietta, the storms had moved out. Friday was much the same- most riders stayed dry but a few got soaked. The forecast for Saturday was the worst, but by 10AM, the sun came out with cool dry air and dried off the roads in half an hour, making it the most beautiful day of the week. In spite of COVID and the weather forecast, we had 79 attendees, a good turnout for a really strange year. In addition to great riding and needed socializing with friends, people went home with lots of goodies too. Iron Pony provided lots of SWAG, and we had nice Windy 9/ TwoWheel Power Hour T-shirts to give away. A big Tip of the Helmet goes to Larry Ward, [Pic shows Larry Ward and friend Nate Davis] who provided the shirts and does his weekly motorcycle show on WKBN radio in Akron, Ohio. This was a particularly nice touch since we had to cancel the FlyBy Week shirts due to COVID uncertainty.

Saturday evening's closing festivities at the outdoor lounge featured door prizes from Lemon & Barret's Powersports, of Parkersburg, West Virginia. Most attendees got one of the prizes which included five helmets, lots of chain lube and plastic polish. Another highlight was the drawing of the winning ticket for the annual MSTA bike raffle which was for a 2019 Suzuki V-Strom adventure bike.

st Annual Devil's Staircase 71 AMA PRO HILLCLIMB It’s been a long and challenging year, so it’s with a lot of excitement that we share the news that – “Hillclimb Sunday is ON!” With so many of our favorite events being cancelled or postponed, this is a welcome reprieve from the series of disappointments of the 2020 season. Unfortunately, the Dayton Motorcycle Club has had to make a number of changes to accommodate the new realities and restrictions mandated. They will be dropping the Saturday events and will be limiting some aspects, and with some – playing by ear. For instance, at this time we are still planning on hosting the TRO Bike Show. So our recommendation is to visit our facebook page – www.Facebook. com/ThunderRoadsOhio and follow the event page there for updates. In their announcement, they shared “We're going to pull the plug on Saturday to focus all of our efforts to putting on the best and safest show on Sunday Oct 11. The dirt drags/field meet/band will return in 2021.” (Continued P.26)

(From P.24) “We are confident that we can meet state mandated COVID-19 safety and social distancing guidelines and put on a fun and safe event for everyone. If you feel sick stay home, if you’re worried about getting sick stay home.” Sunday, October 11th will be the 71st running of the hillclimbs at Oregonia, making it one of the longest running motorcycle events in the country. Indian Motorcycle Returns To The Hill With FTR750 After More Than 80 Years Away From The Sport, Indian Motorcycle Returns To Its Hill-Climbing Roots Enlists 10-Time AMA Pro Hillclimb Champion John Koester To Pilot FTR750 Hillclimb Race Bike A lot of things have changed for 2020, and for the 71st Edition of the Devil’s Staircase one of the most dramatic changes in terms of the racing will be the return of Indian Motorcycle to Hillclimb Racing! Indian will be returning to a sport it once dominated more than 80 years ago with an exciting new bike piloted by 10-time AMA Pro Hillclimb Champion John “Flying” Koester. Regarded as one of the sport’s top riders, Koester was the first U.S. racer to win all three National AMA Pro Hillclimb titles in a single season. “It’s an absolute honour to represent Indian Motorcycle as it makes its dramatic return to hillclimb racing on the same machine that literally changed the game for flat-track racing over the past four years,” said Koester. “We’re excited to unleash the FTR750 on the hill, with our minds firmly fixed on the ultimate goal of capturing a championship.” Koester, along with his father and crew chief Gordy Koester, spearheaded the dramatic transformation of the FTR750 from a flat track race bike to a full-fledged hill shredder to participate in the new TWINS CLASS of the AMA PRO HILLCLIMB SERIES. Modifications include an extended swingarm, knobby tires, redesigned rear tail, and an upgraded Rekluse clutch to account for the increased clutch use demanded by hillclimb racing. The team also worked with S&S to design an exhaust system specific to Koester and his riding position. “When we created the new Twins class, our intention was to attract leading OEMs like Indian Motorcycle to return to this uniquely challenging and exciting form of racing, and we couldn’t be more excited to now welcome Indian Motorcycle back to the hill for the first time in more than 80 years,” said Rob Redmann, Director of AMA Pro Hillclimb. “There is nothing like Hillclimb racing – fast, quick and exciting. We believe brands such as Indian Motorcycle will dramatically impact our ability to draw more fans and help grow this incredible sport.” Since 1901, racing has been a part of the Indian Motorcycle DNA. Founders George Hendee and Oscar Hedstrom met at a bicycle race and maintained their passion for speed and competition when developing the brand in its infancy. Today, Indian Motorcycle has honoured its forefathers by continuing the brand’s racing prowess through various forms of racing, including flat track, landspeed, bagger racing at the upcoming, inaugural MotoAmerica King of the Baggers event, and now hillclimb. “We are always looking for exciting and unique opportunities not only compete, but to also demonstrate the prowess of our engineering and design teams and the capabilities of the incredible motorcycles we develop,” said Gary Gray, Vice President Racing, Service and Technology for Indian Motorcycle. “We’re not only fans of hillclimb racing, but with our brand’s history in the sport, it was a no-brainer that we’d make our return after all these years.” To find more information on AMA Pro Hillclimb Series visit amaprohillclimb.com.For more information on Indian Motorcycle and Indian Motorcycle Racing visit indianmotorcycle. eu Content and Photos courtesy of AMA Pro Racing / Indian Motorcycle Company / S&S THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

KNOBLE MOTO TECH FEATURE:
EXHAUST SWAP Part 2 of our exhaust install on an 05 Dyna Superglide.
When it comes to customization or increases in horsepower, one of the first places many motorcyclist look, is to the exhaust. Last month we covered the different types of exhaust and general removal. In the second of this three part article, we will be covering the install of a Supertrapp SuperMeg on an 05 Dyna Superglide. I picked up a Supertrapp SuperMeg from Supertrapp Industries, right here in Cleveland Ohio First unbox it all, make sure you have located all the parts and tools you will likely need, including new exhaust gaskets. Since this is a disk based exhaust the first step will be to install the disks and cap on the end of the muffler. More disks will add flow and volume. Less disks will move the power lower on the rpm band and increase low end torque. Plus it will provide a more mellow tone for you bike. The exhaust comes with 18 disks, so we will start with that. From there install new gaskets in the exhaust ports. Be careful to slide the gasket in evenly and not damage it. Next put the P clamp onto the front pipe, then install the flanges and snap rings onto the pipes. You will now want to install the muffler bracket onto the transmission, and torque the mounting bolts to spec. These bolts have been known to back out due to vibration, so once they are torqued to spec, take a marker and put a small mark at the “12 o'clock” point of the bolt. This way you will be able to do a walk around of you bike before you ride, and see if the bolt is backing out. I do this on all fasteners that are prone to backing out on my bike. Next install the headpipe. With the 2:1 pipe there is not much clearance to get the pipe into the exhaust ports, so you may have to work the pipe around a little, but I promise it will fit. Then slide the clamps and snap rings into place at the exhaust port. Once the flanges are on the exhaust studs, you can start a nut onto each flange and this should be good enough to hold the pipe in place for the moment. Next you can push the flange into place and start the other nut. These flanges can bind up easily, so it is important to make sure the pipe is seated in the exhaust ports and the flanges are pushing on the snap rings evenly. Tighten the two nuts down evenly on the flanges also. If the flange binds from uneven install, the pipe will not seal at the exhaust port and you will have a leak. Do not fully tighten down the flanges yet because we want to be able to move the head pipe for alignment during the rest of the installation. From here we will install the t-bolts into the muffler mount, the muffler clamp, and install the muffler onto the headpipe and bracket. Tighten all the hardware on the muffler just tight enough to hold it in place. Step back and admire your work. Make sure everything is looking straight and lined up. Make sure you have proper clearance around oil lines, wires, and whatever else may be near your exhaust. 30
THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE
Now you can start tightening things down. Start with the muffler mounts and work toward the engine. This allows you to keep the muffler mounted straight, then pull all the rest of the parts inline as you tighten them up. This is especially important on baggers with dual exhaust. We have all seen the bike with one pipe pointed up and the other blowing dust off the ground. Don't be that guy. Next tighten up the muffler to headpipe clamp, transmission mounts, P clamp at the bottom of the engine, and finally the exhaust flanges. Tighten everything to manufacture's specifications. Next install the heat shields on the pipe and collector. These are held on by a hose clamp that slides through a groove on the back of the heat shield. Sometimes it takes a few minutes to work the clamp through the mount, but keep at it, I believe in you. The heat shield install is done with the same principals as the entire exhaust. Get everything on the pipe to a loose fit, and start tightening everything down evenly, while focusing on alignment. A few times over the years I have found a few heat shields were difficult to get aligned. If that is the case, get it as close as you can, and tighten it all down. After you run the engine a few times and get some heat cycles in the steel of the heat shields, they will begin to stress relieve in place. From there you may be able to loosen the clamps and get the alignment closer. Next step is everyone's favorite; START THE BIKE! While it is idling listen for leaks, and wave your hands around the exhaust ports and head pipe to muffler joint. If you feel puffs of hot air, you have a leak. If you find you have a leak, turn the bike off and recheck all the fasteners. It is possible one wasn't fully seated when you initially torqued it down. Once you ride the bike for an hour or two, you will want to re-torque the exhaust flanges to the cylinder head again. Sometimes the gasket compresses a little more during the first few heat cycles. You are done with installation. Be sure and take lots of pictures and tag Knoble Moto in them when you post them on social media. Next month we will look at tuning the engine for the exhaust you installed. If you would like to learn more about keeping your motorcycle on the road, consider taking a class from Knoble Moto. All class listing are posted on the website and social media, and all classes are held at Skidmark Garage. FUNNY STUFF BECAUSE EVERYONE NEEDS A GOOD LAUGH NOW AND THEN...
A woman goes into Cabela's to buy a rod and reel for her grandson's birthday. She doesn't know which one to get so she just grabs one and goes over to the counter. A Cabela's associate is standing there wearing dark shades. She says, "Excuse me, sir. Can you tell me anything about this rod and reel?" He says, "Ma'am, I'm completely blind; but if you'll drop it on the counter, I can tell you everything from the sound it makes." She doesn't believe him but drops it on the counter anyway. He says, "That's a six-foot Shakespeare graphite rod with a Zebco 404 reel and 10-LB. Test line. It's a good all around combination; and it's on sale this week for only $20.00." She says, "It's amazing that you can tell all that just by the sound of it dropping on the counter. I'll take it!" As she opens her purse, her credit card drops on the floor. "Oh, that sounds like a Master Card," he says. She bends down to pick it up and accidentally farts. At first she is really embarrassed, but then realizes there is no way the blind clerk could tell it was she who tooted. Being blind, he wouldn't know that she was the only person around. The man rings up the sale and says, "That'll be $34.50 please." The woman is totally confused by this and asks, "Didn't you tell me the rod and reel was on sale for $20.00? How did you get $34.50?" He replies," Yes, Ma'am. The rod and reel is $20.00, but the Duck Call is $11.00 and the Catfish Bait is $3.50."

RECIPES Carmine Appice -Vanilla Fudge, Rod Stewart SPINACH AND RICOTTA STUFFED SHELLS Famed percussionist Carmine Appice picked up some pointers from his friend and radio DJ Trevor Joe Lennon for this seriously satisfying stuffed shells dish. Carmine and Trevor recommend waiting until the shells are boiling to make the filling. Then, once the shells are cooked, they stuff each one with filling and top with the remaining tomato sauce. Bon appétit! 12 jumbo pasta shells 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil 1 medium onion, diced 2 cloves garlic, minced 4 cups fresh spinach 1 cup ricotta cheese 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
1 Preheat oven to 350 degrees. 2 Cook pasta until al dente according to package directions.
½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
3 In a large skillet, heat oil over medium, then add onion. Cook until tender, approximately 3-4 minutes.
1 large egg, beaten
4 Add garlic to skillet and cook for 1 minute.
½ teaspoon salt
5 Add spinach and cook until wilted, approximately 2 minutes.
½ teaspoon black pepper
6 Transfer the spinach mixture to a large mixing bowl and add ricotta, mozzarella, Parmesan, egg, salt, and pepper. Stir to combine.
1 ½ cups marinara sauce, divided 12 leaves fresh basil
7 Spread half of the marinara sauce on the bottom of an 8x8 or 9x9 baking dish. 8 Stuff pasta shells with spinach and cheese mixture, then place in the baking dish and cover with aluminum foil. 9 Top pasta shells with the remaining marinara sauce and bake for 45 minutes. 10 Remove from oven, let cool for 5 minutes before serving.

OHIO’S MOTORCYCLE MAG! TRO SCAVENGER HUNT
The TRO SCAVENGER HUNT is a special, indoor THUNDER RUN through the pages of our very own magazine. Hidden someplace within the depth of these pages is a special TRO PRIZE LOGO – see the sample here. It’s a version of our “wheel logo” with a treasure chest on it. It was inspired by Cole’s favorite TV show – Jake and the Neverland Pirates! When you find it, shoot us an email at BuckeyeThunderRun@ gmail.com with SCAVENGER HUNT in the subject line. Let us know what page and exactly where the logo is in this month’s magazine and we will put you in the drawing for some great TRO prizes – including some great gear and subscriptions to the magazine! How cool is that?!
