FROM THE EDITOR

So, what exactly is a BIKER?

And is this a BIKER MAG?

One of the things that’s always amused me is how so many people, even folks that claim themselves to be BIKERS, will try to tell you WHO is a BIKER and who isn’t. In many cases, they might imply that it depends on how you dress or what you ride. Do you have to have tattoos to be a biker? As a guy do you have to have long hair or at least a beard? Does a long beard make you more of a biker than a guy that’s clean shaven?

Does a new $40 – 50 – or even $100,000 motorcycle make you more of a BIKER than a guy riding an EVO with a lot of hard miles on her?

Does a pair of $200 blinged out fashion jeans and matching $100 t-shirt make you more of a BIKER?

Or do any of these things actually make you less?

Does glaring at everyone you see as if you hate the world make you more of a BIKER?

Or does it make you LESS?

I’m a STRONG believer in the idea that the really cool thing about the motorcycle community – the BIKER community – is that you can be WHOEVER you want to be. Wear and ride whatever you want – just be SINCERE in it. Be who you are – and most BIKERS will accept and respect you for that.

Of course, a lot of the discussion eventually comes down to WHAT YOU RIDE.

Do you have to ride an American V-Twin to be a BIKER?

Some clubs and groups have made that mandatory in the past – but the hard truth is that maybe one of the most famous / infamous club leaders in the world spent a lot of time riding a Honda Goldwing. At the end of the day, that’s what he decided best met his needs and his style of riding. And that’s really the most critical thing, I believe. Ride what you want –what works for your style, your journey. Ride something that excites your spirit.

The new Buell Super Cruiser TM just unveiled and featured on the cover of this magazine is one of the most exciting motorcycles that I’ve seen in some time. It not only reminds me of the FXR’s – but even the feeling I had the first time I took out one of the new H-D Fat Bob 114’s a few years ago when they were first released. It was a BEAST that roared and owned the pavement. As I imagine this new Buell does.

Some people will always challenge other styles – big wheels, sport bikes, scooters, choppers, trikes, etc.. or even Harleys - because they don’t match up with their style. (Or maybe they’ve just never ridden one…) But that’s ok. Being a biker – or even just being a part of the riding community isn’t about what you ride or wear. It’s about WHO YOU ARE. You either have that spirit, love of freedom, and sense of BROTHERHOOD or you don’t. It can’t be bought as if embodied by a bike, pair of jeans, or even a business - but maybe it can be learned. It’s an attitude and outlook. And if you’re focused on putting down others and hating on the world, you’re missing the point.

This magazine embodies that philosophy. It’s NOT what you ride or the size of your beard or the amount of bling on your pants that makes you a biker (or not). It’s the spirit of the ride and appreciation of the riding community. Sure we love the bikes – and that Buell gets the spirit going… but that stripped down EVO Dyna might deliver the same excitement. And for someone else, it’s a big touring Goldwing – maybe a 30” front wheel – or maybe even a stretched out Ruckus!

Our bond isn’t the bike we ride, it’s the appreciation of THE RIDE. Respect for jumping on an iron mount and heading out onto the road. Appreciation for the Brothers and Sisters that we meet on the journey…

That’s our REASON TO RIDE – and how we define our magazine. Take it all in. Share the rides, events, and destinations – and invite everyone to join us.

Live Life – Ride Strong, and we’ll see you on the road.

6 REASONS TO RIDE: GREAT LAKES EDITION POWERED BY REASONSTORIDE.COM

On the Cover:

On February 10th, Buell Motorcycle unveiled The Buell Super Cruiser concept bike which is slated as a 2023 model - and began accepting deposits for it.

Conceived by Roland Sands and introduced at his shop in Long Beach, the production bike is expected to be produced here in the Midwest at the Buell facility in Grand Rapids. Bill Melvin, Buell CEO, and Roland Sands introduced the bike to the world and announced that the bike weighs only 450 pounds wet - yet produces 180 horsepower! The “club bike” design certain evoked a lot of FXR comparisons - and got us all thinking.. And maybe dreaming a little.

We featured it on the cover and calendar this month to share some of that excitement and showcase a bike being produced right here in our backyard! For more pictures check out the feature on page 27 or visit BuellMotorcycle.com

If you love to ride…

If you enjoy exploring back roads and discovering new stops…

If you enjoy being part of the show, not just on the sidelines…

If you enjoying sharing your adventures and undertaking new ones…

If you enjoy helping others on the road or in your community…..

If you feel a connection with other riders….

You sound a lot like us.

And you might consider becoming a part of our family…

This year we brought teams to Daytona, Sturgis, Sandusky, Geneva, and dozens of other events across the state and Midwest. We stood side stage at some of the biggest concerts and worked hand in hand to help pull off some of the biggest motorcycle events.

We are actively looking to add Road Reps, Promotional Staff, Contributors, Photographers, and Area Managers all across the midwest. Some positions are paid and some are volunteer, but most are a blend of both. You can make a lot of money, but it takes work, dedication, and a real passion for working with others within the riding community.

We have both paid commissioned positions, hourly paid positions, and volunteer positions. It all depends upon what you’re looking for.

We are a family of good folks from a variety of different backgrounds. We have different interests and skills – but we all enjoy being an active part of the riding community. RTR allows us to actively contribute to this community – helping it grow and sharing the stories we’re a part of.

The first step is to email some information about yourself. Next, we need to meet up and talk. Then let’s hit the road together!

For more information or to start the process, please email us at ReasonsToRide@gmail.com or stop on out to an event and introduce yourself. We look forward to talking.

HOW TO ENTER YOUR EVENTS ONLINE

The cornerstone of everything we do is our motorcycle event listings. While we spend a lot of time on the pretty pictures and the articles, it’s really all the events that bring people to ReasonsToRide! When you boil it all down, motorcycles are a mode of transportation – and we are always looking for places to go… reasons to ride! Even when there’s a foot of snow outside and we can’t bring ourselves to ride the bikes – we still want to hang out with other riders.

And if you’re hosting an event – you want to get it listed here and connect with the more than 300,000 riders we reach every month!

It’s a pretty easy process, and gets even easier once you’ve gone through it. However, it may seem intimidating at first – so, we’ve decided to take it step by step here. All these steps may seem like a lot listed here, but it’s really just “clicking here, clicking there”…. And once you’ve done it, you’ll fly through it the next time!

• Get your information and materials together. This would be all of the details on your event, including where, what and when. If you have graphics, photos, or, most importantly a flyer – you’ll want to have those available on your computer to upload as well when asked.

• Go to ReasonsToRide.com or your state’s specific page, ie. ReasonsToRideOhio.com or ReasonsToRideMichigan.com for example. From this page you’ll want to select “Add Your Event”. It’s located several different places on the page, including at the very top right or in the center of the main page.

This will then take you to a page that includes various options for listing your event(s) online. These are primarily Basic Event Listings, Featured Event Listings, and Featured Event w/ Ride Registration. Each of these options is listed with what they include underneath and the costs associated with each.

If you’re with a CHARITABLE ORGANIZATION (501c3) or hosting a NONPROFIT EVENT, we have special discounted rates for Events. You can scroll down the page for these. These discounts are subject to approval.

Once you select which option you want to go with, you want to click “List Your Event Now”. This will take you to the form for your event.

If you have an account as an Event Organizer, you’ll want to sign in at the top of the page. If you haven’t done this already – you’ll have a chance to register as an Organizer later in the form.

• Now, just go through the form and enter the information for your event. A few notes –

o Event Type – go with the primary classification. Most events will qualify for multiple, and you’ll have a chance to add more later.

o Event Icon – this is your event flyer, if you have one. If you do not, you can upload a photo from past event or a logo for your organization here.

o Event Banner – this is for the space at the top of your event listing. It’s a horizontal space, and you can use the “Event Header” image from your facebook event if you’d like. Or you can use a photo of the event from past years or a logo here as well, if you’d like. (This is reserved for Feature Events)

o Event Description - Include the basic detail on your event here. Don’t repeat details such as date or times, that are listed elsewhere. However, you can include KSU and Bike in times, if you’d like. Basic Event Listings allow approx. 150 characters. Feature listings allow approx. 300 in the magazine listings and unlimited online.

o Event Dates / Times – you must fill in all of these. Even if you don’t have an “end

Add Tickets / Rider Registration to your Event. This will allow online registration or ticket sales for your event. There is information on this and all it has to offer on the website. You can also email us for more information. It’s really a great system, and we often have sponsors that will cover this for Non-Profits – so it’s NO COST to the host organizations

Are you an Organizer? If you haven’t already done this – select “Sign Up Now” to get yourself registered. This will allow your events to be grouped

Once you’ve entered all of your event information, you can preview the event listing and select other options for it. Once you’ve reviewed what you’ve entered, completed you’ll be directed to PayPal to pay for your event listing. We use PayPal to provide safe and secure, third party CC

Your event is then reviewed and approved by the system, it will be shown on the ReasonsToRide.com websites and come up in searches. If you are in a region or state that has a partner publication, it may also be printed within the magazine – space allowing. These Print placements are done as space allows and are subject to secondary approval by the magazine editors. If you have a paid or feature placement, your event should appear in the magazine as long as it has been entered by the 15th of the month prior to it being held. If you have a paid / feature placement, you can confirm this by emailing Events@ReasonsToRide.com Please include which state you are

Again, it sounds complicated – but it’s really just a common sense process

Please note – that the earlier you get your listing up, the more people will see it! So as soon as you get your date set and details worked out – post it

MOTORCYCLE MINISTRIES

How clear is your heart?

What would you be able to say about your life if someone said you only had four hours to live? Geez Louise, MG…way to start an article!!! Just get right down to the core and BOOM! Well…ya’ll know I don’t beat around. So, what would you be able to say? Was it effective? Were you able to leave some kind of good legacy? Did you make an impact of any kind on someone that would make them a better person? Were you that guy or girl that people will look back and say, “Man, when they left, it definitely left a place that is hard to fill.”

I believe we all want to be that person who leaves a mark on someone’s life in a good way and not so much for our own selfish gain, but at least to say we were here. Because going through life without purpose or purposefully finding our place, is like walking dead. Pretty harsh, isn’t it? I know…but don’t shoot the messenger yet.

There was this guy you see, that actually was given four hours to live. He had been in a terrible accident and his liver was damaged. The doctor said it could go one way or another, depending on how much of the liver was cut. If 40% or less, the guy was going to be good, if more….not so much, and at this point, it wasn’t going in his favor. So, he asked, “How long do I have?” Answer…” Four hours.” So as the guy lay there on that hospital bed, he started thinking about his life. He was a Christian, already had given his life to the Lord so he wasn’t worried about dying. But what had he really done while here? Oh, he went to church, unless something else came up, Bible study every week, gave to charities more out of obligation than heart, helped people out now and then, like a robotic moving about…walking dead, thinking he’s alive, but what had he really done that made a mark on someone’s life? That’s right, even Christians have moments of imperfections and wonder. Not hypocritical, but human. Turns out the guy lived, thank the Lord, and he ended up getting involved in a ministry that he is head of now, not CMA related, but he is making a mark on lives all over the US and beyond! Why? Because he rose out of the grave of the walking dead and became alive again! He came out and found the purpose he needed to move forward and leave a mark! And most likely a huge hole when his time on this earth is really over!

Listen, we are all here for a purpose, God didn’t put us here for nothing. If you feel like you haven’t found what your purpose is, if you are roaming around like the walking dead, if you know there is more out there for you and you sense that you have yet to leave a mark….then this is the second part of your 2023 challenge. Rise up out of that grave of the walking dead and become alive again! Forget what was and become what is….a life of purpose with a planner Who will point you in the direction He created you to go before you were even formed in your mother’s womb! (Jeremiah 1:5) You can count on Him!

All Righty Then…Jesus ‘n’ ME be seeing you in the Wind!

RTR CHAMPIONSHIP BIKE SHOW SERIES March 2023 UPDATE!

This year we’ve more than DOUBLED the area covered by our show series, adding new shows throughout the Midwest – and we’ve just gotten started! . After doing these shows for more than 12 years, its great seeing how many connections and friendships that have developed over the years between folks coming to the shows. There’s a common bond that exists between riders – and there’s even more of a connection between the folks that take the time to restore, customize, or even create their own bikes. People start talking about what they’ve built, what they have at home, and what they rode up to the show. And this year – we are doing even more to help facilitate those discussions and really ensure that everyone has a great time at the show!

It's important to recognize that these are INFORMAL, RIDE-IN SHOWS! While we do use Judges at most shows, the majority of the votes come from the crowd. These are fun shows with the emphasis on camaraderie more than competition. If you’ve ever stormed out of a show after not winning the big trophy – these shows aren’t for you. We’ve always believed that the best thing about our bike show series is the people that both exhibit and attend. This isn’t just about the bikes – but about the people building and riding them as well

All makes, models, and years are truly welcome at the RTR Bike Shows. We have over 15 distinct classes for bikes, and we are constantly adding more as the shows evolve. We group bikes by style and origin, and try to balance things out as much as possible. Categories include designations for Imported and Domestic, Touring, Trikes, Vintage, Racing, and even Radical. Specialty classes include Custom Paint, Patriotic and Military themed bikes, and even a Ladies Class.

Even if you’ve never participated in a Bike Show before, these shows are for you if you have a passion for your bike. Go ahead and bring her out – and PUT HER IN THE SHOW! Make sure that you check out our events listing on Facebook and follow the ones that are of interest to you. We will be posting updates and more details about the new programs as things are finalized. www.Facebook.com/ReasonsToRide

Bike of the Nights!

As always, the RtR crew will be out and about hitting various Bike Nights, Rides, and other events throughout the upcoming riding season. At select events, our team will now be recognizing one or two bikes as “BIKE OF THE NIGHT” as part of the 2023 Championship Bike Show Series –presented by Michigan Biker Law.

The owners of these motorcycles will receive a special trophy and invitation to participate in an upcoming bike show – sponsored by the magazine. We will also be featuring some of these bikes in the magazine and / or online.

At some locations, such as Arsenal Harley-Davidson in Waterford Michigan – we will be regularly presenting a BIKE OF THE NIGHT Trophy as part of their Bike Nights! Follow them or us on Facebook for more details!

If you’d like our crew to stop by your Bike Night or other event, just email us with details and contact information. Email us at Events@ ReasonsToRide.com

Thunder Zone Vendor Areas

For the larger weekend shows, we often host THUNDER ZONE Vendor areas as part of our layout. These vendor areas offer a tremendous opportunity to reach not only thousands of riders – but far more, as many of the events embrace the entire community, drawing attendees from throughout their regions. Many of our shows are part of rallies and events with more than 10,000 in attendance, several more than 50k, and even a few 100k plus! And for all of our Tour Stops – we work with vendors to ensure a seamless, successful experience. However, at most – space is limited! So, email us ASAP to get on the list and reserve your spots! For a complete schedule and more information on vending at these events, email BikeShowInfo@ gmail.com

18 REASONS TO RIDE: GREAT LAKES EDITION POWERED BY REASONSTORIDE.COM
REASONS TO RIDE: GREAT LAKES EDITION POWERED BY REASONSTORIDE.COM 19

When folks approach us for help with their Poker Runs or motorcycle events, the number one area of concern is almost always “Sponsorships”. Easily 7 out of 10 requests center around folks needing help with arranging sponsors and raising funds for their ride. And 90% of the time, folks are always making the same mistake.

And that is understanding the simple fact –

For a simply raffle donation or smaller donation, sure – the cause alone may justify some contributions, especially if it’s a well-known charity or cause. Veterans causes, children’s charities, cancer –anything that impacts a lot of people – will prompt some support. In many cases, they may donate simply because they like you and appreciate anyone making an effort to help others. But if you are looking for significant sponsorships, you need to come in the door with supporting arguments as to why they should invest in your ride.

Legitimate reasons include –

Traffic – How many people can the business expect to come through their door as either a sponsor or Ride Stop. Will this traffic generate off-setting income?

Branding / Positive Exposure – Does your Ride / Event offer the business a chance to positively showcase themselves within the community or cause folks to associate them with a strong brand or identifiable cause. How is this conveyed to the public or even ride participants?

Direct Return – Offer an immediate return on their investment in the form of tickets / passes for the ride and after event for them to distribute to customers.

This doesn’t imply that 90% of business owners and operators are cold hearted, insensitive folks. It’s simply the reality of doing business – and staying in business.

Especially these days, most business owners can’t simply fund every worthwhile cause that comes through their door. Business operators have an obligation to look out for their own interests – and remain in business. Many local businesses, especially these days, are facing a myriad of challenges and in many cases – increased costs. In most cases, they need to consider what business benefits your sponsorship offers them REGARDLESS of the cause.

“Stop into ABC Harley-Davidson™ and PRE-REGISTER for the ride, and ABC will cover the cost of the ride!”

How do you MONETIZE the value of your Sponsorships?

Make them a Stop. The easiest and most prominent means of offering value to a sponsor is by making them a RIDE STOP, and for your strongest sponsors – making them a starting or ending point. If possible, ALL of your Ride Stops should be sponsors.

Allow them to market directly to your participants / supporters. Allow your sponsors the chance to deliver their message / invitation directly to your participants and supporters. This might include:

• Setting up a booth at the event.

• Delivering a presentation to your organizations at a meeting before or after the event.

• Insert a flyer or coupon into a “swag” bag or distributing them to participants directly at check-in.

• Create a Program or Ride Card that features the sponsors and their message.

• Collect lead / contact information through registration or door raffles (w/ email addresses). Make sure you let participants know that you will be sharing their information with sponsors.

• Put them on ride t-shirts or banners at the event.

20 REASONS TO RIDE: GREAT LAKES EDITION POWERED BY REASONSTORIDE.COM
“Your cause alone is NOT justification for sponsors to open their checkbook.”

What to ask for / How to present?

Prepare a simply one sheet that outlines what it is you’re proposing. Keep it simple. It should cover the basics –

When / Where / Why? – When and where is the Ride and what’s it supporting.

Who? – Who are you? Is there an organization behind the event, is it a certified 501c3 charity?

How? – How are you getting the message out. What’s your plan?

“We will be promoting the ride through Reasons To Ride Magazine, a regional motorcycle magazine reaching over 300,000 riders across the Midwest. They offer both a print magazine and online promotion through digital editions and social media. In addition, we will be distributing over 500 handbills and posting flyers at over 50 locations throughout the area.”

What? – What is it that you’re asking for? In most cases, we recommend a basic three tier structure for Sponsorships. Make it simple and easy to convey so that anyone in your group can easily present.

Presenting Sponsorship – should include them on everything, maybe even the “name” of the ride. For example, “The Michigan Biker Law Ride for Veterans”. Don’t be afraid to make this worth a lot and possibly even include multi-year options. A commitment to a long term relationship and recognizing the value of it – will be appealing to most sponsors, especially if you’re asking for a significant investment. Always, though, allow them the option of excusing themselves (well in advance of next year’s event) if they are not happy or don’t see the value in the event. Essentially you are giving them the FIRST OPTION for the next year, however they must exercise it right away. This is a great excuse for getting them to commit early. These should ALWAYS be exclusive in terms of their market and direct competitors, not only in terms of the Presenting Sponsorships – but ALL sponsorships and on-site at the event. The value of the Presenting Sponsorship depends entirely on the size of the Ride / Event and the amount of advance promotion / exposure you have. If you’re running ads in magazines (such as Reason to Ride!) and circulating flyers / posters throughout the area – it’s reasonable to ask for at least $1,000 - $5,000 for established rides. If you’re doing more expensive promotions – such as full page ads or ads for months in advance, maybe radio or billboards – you must justify $5-10,000 for bigger rides and events.

The key here is to remember – you’ll RARELY (if ever) get it if you don’t ASK.

Supporting Sponsors – Allow for multiple Supporting Sponsorships and maybe include them on on-site and online materials, but not to the extent or scale as the Presenting Sponsorships. These could be half as much or maybe even less than the Presenting Sponsorships. In most cases, these might be $500 - $1,000 in cost.

Community Supporters – This is the basic level of sponsorship and should allow any business that wants to support the “cause” to donate and get recognized without a huge investment. Maybe recognize them as part of a list on a banner, program, and online. NOT on ride posters, flyers, or prominent signage. In most cases, these sponsorships are $100 or so.

ReasonsToRide can help promote your event for as little as $100 and has basic Ride Promotional Packages starting at $500 that can include online pre-registration, digital + print advertising, and even assistance with sponsors and on-site coordination. EDITOR’S NOTE: A few years back we ran a series of articles focusing on how to effectively plan, organize, promote, and execute various motorcycle events – starting with the Poker Run. After countless requests for reprints and updates we decided to revisit the topic this spring and update the series. REASONS TO RIDE: GREAT LAKES EDITION POWERED BY REASONSTORIDE.COM 21
Continued next page

The First Steps.

First off, identify potential sponsors within the community. Working with your board and volunteers, create a spreadsheet of prospects. Make it the theme of a meeting and brainstorm as a group. Take note of known contacts and relationships that your group may have with the prospective sponsors. Identify specific people to approach each sponsor. Assign a team, whenever possible.

Make sure you cover, the usuals and even a few reaches –Motorcycle Dealerships (Potential Starting / Ending Spots)

• Bars / Restaurants (Potential Ride Stops)

• VFW’s / Legion Halls (Potential Starting / Ending Spots)

• Tattoo Shops

• Retail Shops

• Car Dealerships

• Insurance Agencies

• Law Firms

• Banks

• Bail Bond Companies

• Smoke Shops

Make first, informal approach in late September / October - tail end of riding season while the value of the motorcycle community is still front and center in their mind. Some companies do their budgets in the Fall and that’s the time to get in your request. In some cases, it’s easier to get $5,000 in the Fall than $50 in the Spring. However, don’t be surprised or put-off when they ask you to come back in January or February. The process varies greatly with different companies and organizations.

Of course, those making the approach should be credible and effectively represent the ride, event, and the cause it supports. You are essentially asking these folks to invest in YOU and trusting that you will help others with their money. Don’t underestimate this. Along these lines, NEVER drink while making a presentation, even while at a bar. Nothing is gained by it – and you risk having them question your reliability and potential risk to investing in you and your ride.

Track the approaches and status of each of prospect on your spreadsheet.

During the Event.

Make sure that you make your sponsors part of the program on ride day.

• Invite them to set-up or participate in the Ride. Give them a number of “passes” or invites for them to use or hand-out to customers, friends, or family.

• Frequently announce / recognize sponsors throughout the entire event. It’s worth having a DJ / MC for this alone if necessary.

• Hang banner(s) recognizing sponsors prominently at both check-in and at any after-ride festivities.

• Take photos that include the sponsor (their business, their logo, their people..) whenever possible. Make it clear that they are part of the ride / event.

• Make sure that you save any programs (mentioning sponsors) or signage. You’ll want these for follow up with sponsors and your lead-up for next year’s ride / event.

22 REASONS TO RIDE: GREAT LAKES EDITION POWERED BY REASONSTORIDE.COM

After the Ride.

When it comes to your sponsors – it’s ESSENTIAL that you follow up with them after the event unless you’re not planning on hosting the ride / event or seeing them ever again.

• Drop-off or send them a copy of any programs / signage from the ride that includes them.

• Drop-off or send them a personalized letter or plaque that recognizes them for their support. Wall plaques are GREAT – because it not only gives them something to mount on the wall and show off (giving them additional exposure) but it also promotes your event to potential riders and sponsors. “Hey, I’d like one of those on my wall!”

• Recognize them with a post on social media, tagging them if possible. Include photos of the event that include their business, their logo, or their people. Whenever possible, include a photo of the principles with you or at the event. That’s a brief summary of some recommendations and ideas that you might consider. Of course, things vary widely based upon the specific ride / event and your cause. First year events should take a very different approach - seeking high visibility sponsors more as partners to give credibility and exposure to your ride. Well established, larger rides can certainly kick things up a lot.

The key points remain the same, though, for all rides.

For more information and assistance with promoting your ride or upcoming event, you can of course contact us directly. That’s pretty much what we do. We also have bundled packages that include everything – print and digital ads, flyers, banners, and even help distributing it all – at amazingly reasonable rates. We can also discount things and offer additional services such as designing flyers in exchange for sponsorship recognition. We can help each other – as promotional partners.

That’s pretty much our business. For more information, email us at Info@ReasonsToRide.com

Garage Brewed Motorcycle Show

February 4, 2023

Things can get boring during winter so the Garage Brewed Motorcycle Show, held annually at the beginning of February at the Rhinegeist Brewery in Cincinnati, Ohio, is the perfect way to spend a cold Saturday. Photo Credit Bill DeVore Cincinnati Cafe' Racers

The show is organized by a dedicated crew from Cincinnati Cafe Racers (CCR), a Facebook group based in the Greater Cincinnati area which includes Southern Ohio, Northern Kentucky and South Eastern Indiana.

They are fans of many different styles of motorcycles, with an emphasis on vintage and classic bikes, both stock and customized. Their membership is diverse, and they ride many different types of motorcycles, scooters, mopeds, and more - just about anything with two wheels.

There were about sixty bikes in the show, entered in the Classic, Race, Pro Custom, and Garage Custom classes. The Garage Customs have always been my favorites, as the use of junk, mismatched parts, etc. demonstrates creativity and a sense of humor. Here are some of my favorites.

Drop a Gear and Disappear on the Backroads of Appalachia!

What comes to mind when you envision the gateway to the heart of Appalachia? Do you imagine thoroughbreds racing through the hills? How about riding the down country roads through the lush Appalachian forests and mountain scenery to enjoy a night under the stars at the Niagara of the south, which features one of the world's only moonbows on a full moon! If you've envisioned either, then look no further because Whitley County is the place for you. Williamsburg, the county seat for Whitley County, is the gateway to central Appalachia and is also home to our own Whitley County Motorcycle Group. This place has everything a rider could want and is conveniently located right off I-75 N on exit 11. Williamsburg is an up-and-coming Appalachian town with something for everyone, including the kids with the Kentucky Splash Waterpark Complex. If the great outdoors isn't quite your style, head down to the Mint Gaming Hall right off exit 11 as well. The newly built casino offers the latest in modern casino style gaming with an excellent beverage selection and great eats at the Backyard Race and Sports Grill located just inside. The area is also home to the Copperhead Trail that goes through Whitley and McCreary counties and takes you right by Cumberland Falls; this is by far my favorite trail route as a rider because you genuinely get a feel of what it's like to be in Appalachia. You ride through the small downtowns and see the locals- but you also experience nature in a sense that you just won't get anywhere else. Have some time to spare? While in McCreary county- get your ticket to ride the Big South Fork Scenic Railway, where you'll experience Appalachia full steam ahead and travel through the Mountains while sitting back and enjoying the sights and sounds of Eastern Kentucky. After Copperhead Trail use our Backroads of Appalachia Mobile Application to ride IBEDAM to Corbin, KY and eat were it all began at the First Kentucky Fried Chicken or take in a concert at the Corbin Arena. If your looking for more curves and less attractions head east on Revenue Runner Hwy 92 into the heart of coal country and experience an

RECIPES

-I make this ALL the time when we camp or go up to our cabin. It can be made the night before then put on to cook early the next day. SOOOO good!

Lazy Crockpot Breakfast

Serves 6-8 (or 4 hungry bikers)

• 1 dozen eggs

• 1 bag hash browns, slightly thawed

• 3 cups cheddar cheese – shredded

• ½ tsp of pepper

• 1lb ground or link breakfast sausage, (or you can use ham, bacon, etc)

• Optional add-ins: Diced tomatoes, onions, bell pepper, jalapenos, mushrooms, etc.

Coat a large crockpot with a thick layer of cooking spray Beat 12 eggs until well blended.

In a large bowl mix the hash browns, blended eggs, pepper and 2 cups of cheese.

Then pinch off bits of the raw sausage and add it to the bowl (if you use links simply slice them and add them in)

If you are using any add-ins, now is the time to mix them in Mix everything well then pour into the crockpot and sprinkle the last cup of cheese on top

Now the easy part –cover, then SET IT AND FORGET IT for 2-3 hours on high or 3-4 hours on low.

Scoop out and chow down!

Have a recipe that you’d like to share? Write it all down and send with a picture – to ReasonsToRide@gmail.com Put RECIPE in the subject line. If we use it, we’ll send you copies of the magazines and a RTR T-Shirt – so include your address and t-shirt size as well! Thanks!

Corned Beef in Guinness

Serves 6 (or 3 hungry bikers)

• 1 bottle Guinness beer (or other stout beer - or you can use beef stock)

• 1 cup beef stock

• 2 tbsp brown sugar

• 3 1/2 pound uncooked brisket for corned beef, rinsed well and patted dry

• 1 tbsp pickling spice

• 1/2 onion

• 1 head garlic, halved

• 1 head cabbage, sliced

• 4-5 carrots, cut into 3/4-inch chunks

• 1 lb of red potatoes, cut into 3/4-inch chunks

Preheat oven to 300.

In a large oven safe pot (I use a cast iron dutch oven), stir together the beer, stock, brown sugar, pickling spice, onion and the garlic. Place in the brisket and bring to a simmer but don’t elt it boil – it makes a mess

Once it begins simmering, cover the pot and place in oven to roast for 2-3 hours, flipping meat once during halfway point.

Add in the vegetables and allow to continue cooking covered for another 2-3 hours or until the meat is fork tender

Serve in a bowl with plenty of broth or sliced on a platter with a nice piece of crusty bread

***This can be made in a crock pot too, just add a couple hours cooking time to the meat
