FROM THE PUBLISHER Thankfully, it appears as though the record breaking rains of spring are past – and now we have heat alerts and ozone updates instead to smart phones buzzing. Regardless, we find ourselves in the midst of riding season and have an almost endless array of rides, rallies, bike nights, and other motorcycle events that might take part in every week. And of course, Thunder Roads Ohio is your best option for seeing everything that’s worth considering! As you head out on the road, I would once again encourage you to make sure that you are trying new things and really getting the most out of your riding experience. There are so many different rides and events for you to consider, it’s really just a matter of you deciding what you’d like to try. There are new stops, new rides, new rallies, and countless new events for you to consider. I remember hearing about a group in central Ohio, a few years back, that would simply pick a page in the magazine to open to and then ride to wherever they found on the page. They would meet each Saturday morning and then head off to a destination that they had randomly chosen from the pages of TRO. In most cases it was a place that few – if any – of the group members had ever been to before. But of course, it was the ride and the company on the road that really made the trip. A new destination made things interesting, but it was really just a matter of choosing the direction to head in most cases. I’d also encourage you to get involved in a group or event as well, if you have the time available. As much fun as riding is – it’s certainly a “group sport” for most. While I love the solitude at times, riding with other brothers and sisters on the road can certainly make the journey that much more rewarding. If not a group – you might also consider helping out with an event that possibly speaks to a cause you believe in. These days it seems as though a lot of great organizations are suffering from lack of volunteers and even some of the longest running motorcycle events are winding down due to less people able to help out. This is truly a shame, especially when so many people don’t realize what they are missing out on. Getting involved in a charitable ride or service organization can be incredibly rewarding and again – you get to ride with some great folks as well, in most cases. As we look towards what’s really the “final” month of summer for many of us, make sure that you make the most of your days – and get out and ride when you can. Hope to see ya out on the road! D. A. As Told By

THE IRON COWBOY

Thunder Roads Ohio 2019 Veterans Events Serving those that have Served.

Thunder Roads Ohio and the Iron Cowboy Productions teams have always felt that we owed a special debt to those that have served our nation – past and present, both abroad and here in our own local communities. Community service is at the core of what makes our nation great – and few things embody that more than those serving as first responders or in our military. As such, we have always made it a point to support those that have served and organizations serving them and their families. This year we took things a step further and actively became partners with a few groups to produce events specifically aimed at supporting veteran’s organizations and those they serve. The first was the Classics, Customs, and Cages - Car, Truck, and Bike Show and Blessing that we hosted with Combat Vets MA 12-7 at the Quaker Steak and Lube in Mentor, OH. Poor weather and an even worse forecast didn’t help things, but it was still a great event. A dedicated crowd came out and supported the Combat Vets and their mission.

Work is already underway to plan second year editions of each of these events, although the formats of each may be tweaked some based upon our experiences with each. We are also considering moving one to the Fall, as well as looking for other locations in Ohio to host similar events. Ideally, we are looking for active veteran’s organizations to partner with on events in their area. If you are involved in a veterans service organization and would like more information on how we might host such an event in your area, please email us at ThunderRoadsOhio@ gmail.com

Next, we did the Spring Biker Bash – Bike Show and Swap Meet, teaming with American Legion Post 496 in Kent and their Legion Riders. Combat Vets MA 12-3, also based at Legion Post 496, joined in to provide support for the event as well. For this one we tried a few different things – and some worked, while others did not. Overall, we considered the event a huge success in many ways. Despite another questionable forecast, the weather cooperated fully with us this time – and we enjoyed a nice crowd throughout the day. As with many first-year events, these were not huge financial successes – but with the support of local volunteers and contributions from the TRO Warrior Fund, the events were viable and funds were raised for all the groups involved. In addition to the raffles and promotions held on the days of the event, Iron Cowboy Productions also made cash contributions of $500 to each of the primary veteran’s organizations involved – CVMA 12-7, CVMA 12-3, and the American Legion Post 496 and their Legion Riders. Beyond this, TRO provided over $5,000 in additional printing, advertising, and promotional support to the events. I realize that in the scheme of things, these may not seem like a lot – but our hope is that these events and the funds they raise help raise awareness for the groups involved and help support their mission to make a difference in the lives of those that have sacrificed for our nation.

TRO SERVING THE RIDING COMMUNITY It has never been our practice to publicly announce donations or trumpet our work previously, but recently we have come to understand that this not only is a disservice to those in our organization and the work they do – but also leaves us open to misinterpretation in terms of our intentions and overall mission. None of these events have been undertaken for financial gain, but rather as an effort to increase awareness. While TRO does gain from brand awareness and general exposure of the events, that’s not our primary goal – as supported by the fact that we have done VERY FEW if any announcements about our contributions in the past. For example, thus far in 2019, Thunder Roads Ohio and Iron Cowboy Productions have... • Donated over 75 pages of advertising to non-profit and charitable organizations and their events within Thunder Roads Ohio Magazine – retail value of more than $50,000. Obviously, we don’t pay the retail cost – but we do have a hard production cost for every page we print. • Helped raise over $14,000 and produced / distributed over 10,000 copies of the 2019 Greater Akron Motorcycle Events Calendar in partnership with the Greater Akron Motorcycle Club in support of charitable events and non-profits they support. This is our 5th year doing this calendar. • Helped raise over $5,500 and produced / distributed over 10,000 copies of the 2019 Southwestern Ohio Motorcycle Events Calendar in partnership with the Dayton Motorcycle Club in support of charitable events and organizations in the region. This is our first year doing this calendar, and our hope is that it continues to grow each year. We are only able to do all of this with the support of our readers, sponsors, partners, and volunteers! Iron Cowboy Productions is a small family company, but we aim high – and with your help we aspire to accomplish great things and make a difference in the communities we serve. Thank you!

TRO SCAVENGER HUNT

The TRO SCAVENGER HUNT is a special, indoor THUNDER RUN through the pages of our very own magazine. Hidden someplace within the depth of these pages is a special TRO PRIZE LOGO – see the sample here. It’s a version of our “wheel logo” with a treasure chest on it. It was inspired by Cole’s favorite TV show – Jake and the Neverland Pirates! When you find it, shoot us an email at BuckeyeThunderRun@gmail.com with SCAVENGER HUNT in the subject line. Let us know what page and exactly where the logo is in this month’s magazine and we will put you in the drawing for some great TRO prizes – including some great gear and subscriptions to the magazine! How cool is that?!

MOTORCYCLE MINISTRIES Just Go… It’s August already! This season is just zipping by and there is still so much left to do! Easyriders Rodeo is coming up and we hope to see you all there! Looking at the calendar, I am finding that we are going and doing so much that I wonder if we are enjoying the ride as we go. So many times, we can get caught up in the getting from one point to the other, that we forget how we arrived. You see, the journey on the way is just as important as the event we are going to. If we “beat feet” and hit the throttle to get there, we have totally missed the enjoyment of the ride along the way. That’s how it is with our lives sometimes, we are so busy getting our lists completed that we miss out on some of the most important happenings going on right around us. We get so focused on the task, that we get out of focus with all else. Did you see that Eagle in the field? No, because you were going by it so fast it was a blur. “Gotta get there, man!” Going, going, going...gone. In July we had one of the biggest events for CMA and friends that, as new State Coordinators, was jumping in deep waters very quickly! The hustle to make sure everything was done, every T crossed, and I dotted was pretty intense. At one point, a piece of paper got in my way and I just threw it on the floor! A piece of paper! I leaned down and picked it up thinking, “wow, you just defeated a piece of paper… how lame was that?” That’s when I realized that stressing over an event that will come off the way it’s supposed to regardless of whether I miss a dot or not, will not change the way the event rolls. Breathe. Pray. Enjoy the journey. Of course, I was right…the Rally was awesome! Over 500 people showed up and a good time was had by all! (Saint Marys will never be the same!) You should join us sometime…we still have a lot of fun! So, what am I trying to get across today? What little nugget can I pass along to help us all enjoy the ride a little bit? Slow down. Enjoy the going, along with the doing. When the event is ready to roll, roll with it. Although it is important, it isn’t really the prep work that makes the ride better. It’s all in the way you arrive. So, arrive with windblown hair, a few bugs on your chaps and a smile on your face that says, “I have arrived, and man was it an awesome ride!!” As I mentioned before, CMA will be at the Rodeo on Labor Day weekend, and we’ll also be gear checking at the AIM event in September, and hopefully riding with you at the ABATE Toy Run in Lima as well! As someone once said, “They’re everywhere man!” We try to be…here when you need us! Until next time, pray before you go and enjoy the ride! Mary G.

AMA VINTAGE MOTORCYCLE DAYS 2019

Although Mother Nature may have rained on our parade, it was not enough to dampen the drive or the spirits of those participating or spectating at Mid Ohio AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days. Racers and spectators made the most of it. From the littlest guys (see photo of four-year-old, Arlo, who put in mile after mile up and down the boulevard) to the vendors in the swap meet, there truly was something for everyone.

Friday's hare scramble races went off without a hitch. Riders maneuvered the two hour course through the woods and up and through mud and water hazards in their quest to be the best in their respective class. Saturday brought out a huge crowd and spectator car parking had to be diverted outside the track as there was simply no more room . The boulevard grass was filled with motorcycles of every make and model. Lines for the Wall of Death were steady and the hillsides were covered with fans looking for the best viewing points. Saturday's race card was going smoothly until a threebike crash in the keyhole caused a red flag delay. All three riders were transported by ambulance. I could not get a condition on all but a shout out to our friend Jon Nicholas who, I’ve heard, is in good spirits with some broken ribs. Unfortunately, racing was unable to resume with a passing shower that kept riders off the track for the rest of the day. Mid Ohio's road course is slippery and difficult on most days. Add the rain and it's simply not an option for safe racing. Even the flat track racing at Richland County Fairgrounds was postponed until Sunday. For those of us that stay the weekend, Saturday evening is an opportunity to catch up with racer friends. Although the Kennedys are no longer actively racing, AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days gives us a chance to catch up and cheer on our racing family. Officials shortened Sunday morning practice and were able to complete the races from Saturday's program. And while a valiant effort was made to get all of Sunday's scheduled program ran, the rain fell again, and the remaining races were canceled. It was a great weekend of racing nonetheless. The diversity of the crowd never ceases to amaze me. The diversity of the makes and models of motorcycles is amazing. HONDA celebrated the 50th anniversary of the CB750 and the 60th anniversary of American Honda Motor Co. Both Honda and Harley Davidson offered demo rides. I know I say this every year but AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days at Mid Ohio Sports Car Course is something you should experience. A special thank you to Sara Chappell Photos for the awesome shots of the weekend!

Bike nights with a little bull… and a month of new discoveries

The sunny days of July opened up the roads for us to get uncaged. Bike nights are in full swing as well as organized charity rides. I can say I have put on some serious miles this year so far and plans are to ride to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan the first week of August. Locally, NE Ohio is full of options to keep the bikes on the road. July kicked off a new location for another bike night in Medina. Thirsty Cowboy, one of Medina’s finest country music dance and night clubs premiered its first bike and truck night in July. WQMX, Mr. Biker (the patch lady), Thunder Roads Ohio and Last Alarm – Sharon Township Firefighters Association co-hosted their debut. If you have not been to Thirsty Cowboy, their facility makes for a spacious location for not only bike parking, but inside as well. Throughout the week, they offer Wednesday night line dancing, and weekend country music artists. If you’re up for a little more action, test your balancing skills atop the only mechanical bull in the area. “TC Tornado” is sure to give you another ride of your life, and that’s no bull!! Check out the next Bike and Truck night at Thirsty Cowboy coming up on Thursday, August 8 starting at 7:00. 2743 Medina Road (Rt. 18 & 71) Medina. www.thirstycowboys. com New discoveries along the road… What I love to find are new attractions, restaurants and areas that I haven’t been to before. Recently, I rode with the American Legion Riders Post #253 in Lodi. They

organized a ride to the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame in Pickerington, Ohio. We stopped for breakfast along CR 620 called Nye’s Country Café. Recently under new management, it definitely caught my attention as a restaurant to consider as a stop. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, the food was great and the prices were reasonable. 360 CR 620, West Salem, OH Another along the road discovery was a pub in Jeromesville. Even though we did not stop that day, it piqued my curiosity, so I returned to the J-Ville Pub the following Tuesday. Also under new management as of Feb 1, the J-Ville pub has been known as a popular biker bar as far back as 1880. I heard about their delicious buffalo chicken tater tots on steroids. They aren’t kidding when they say delicious AND on steroids! Although I did not have the appetite to try the “best burger in the state” I did get validation from a customer who gave me a thumbs up! The 8 oz., 100% beef burger is prepared with special seasonings and served on a brioche bun. Tuesday specials include the “build your own burger” that is served with fries and a beer for $12. They have been remodeling the inside in order to accommodate room for dining and they expanded the seating at the bar. J-Ville Pub is organizing a poker run on August 24th to raise money for the Bogavich family who lost three of their children in a fire recently. First bike out departs from J-Ville Pub at 10:00. Last bike in at 5:00. This will be a scenic country ride that includes a meal following the ride. $20 per person. Chinese raffles, door prizes, 50/50. Stops will include Duckies in Butler, End Zone in Mifflin, and Iron Pony. For more information, find this on Facebook at “Sharing the love for Bogavich family poker run” or J-Ville Pub & Grill - 8 Main Street, Jeromesville

Looking for great ride stops on Sunday? There’s a lot of biker action taking place in the small town of Bolivar, Ohio. Vaughan’s Pub & Grill knows what it takes. With a full bar, large menu and outdoor patio, it has been a popular ride stop for years. Every Tuesday starting at 6:00 is their popular 12 oz. strip steak night that comes with a baked potato, salad and roll. Sundays are meant for bikers! Yes, they have a special cookout every Sunday along with a live band from 3:00 – 6:00. A cookout with half chicken, shrimp and steak kabobs, red skins, baked beans and coleslaw accompanies this outdoor patio event. Vaughan’s is also hosting 2 bike runs in August. The first one is the “Lost Warriors” starting at 11:00 and the “Founding Fathers” run on August 24. Both are departing from Vaughan’s Pub. For more information on the runs, see their Facebook page at Vaughan’s Pub & Grill - 10983 State Route 212 NE, Bolivar, Ohio I hope you can get out and support these fine establishments and charities. The Bike Show Series Over the last several years, Thunder Roads Ohio has worked to develop these local and regional Bike Shows as a means of showcasing both the rides that our readers have and the amazing works of rolling art that local shops and builders have been producing. Along the way, we discovered that many local riders had never participated in a Bike Show – never considering that their bikes were “show worthy”. It turns out though, that most riders have an appreciation – even a love of motorcycles that goes beyond the amount of chrome on a bike or if there are water spots and dust on them. We’ve hosted Bike Shows at indoor venues showcasing bikes with less than a dozen miles on them – and we’ve hosted Bike Shows at outdoor venues ranging from dealership parking lots to grass fields with countless entries still hot from riding in from across the state! Throughout we’ve discovered that it’s not always the most polished that gets the attention, but it’s the love and work that goes into the bike that everyone appreciates. Even if you’ve never participated in a Bike Show before, we encourage everyone to participate and have fun with the shows! Chances are that you’ll discover a greater appreciation for what makes your bike unique and meet some other folks with a similar passion. And we’re certain you’ll have a blast! The TRO Bike Show Series features local, regional, and nationally recognized shows that all builders and bike owners are welcome to participate in. Vintage, metric, v-twin, customs, restored antiques, “resto-mods”, trikes, and radicals - they are all welcome to the show. These shows are RIDE-IN shows, meaning that the bikes are expected to be ridden and a little bit of road dust is fine. We don’t split hairs over trailering in bikes, but we do require that all bikes must be functioning. They must start and be able to be safely ridden on the road. Most of the shows include voting by event attendees and weighted judges scores. We use this approach to make certain we include both the “popular opinion” and an objective review of the bikes.

Interested in coming out? It’s easy!

NEW FOR 2019: WINNERS DRAWN YEAR-ROUND! SIMPLE DIGITAL CHECK-IN’S! “MAKE YOUR OWN RIDE STOPS!” SPECIAL PASSPORT RIDES! SCAVENGER HUNT CHALLENGES! PRESENTED BY RUSS BROWN MOTORCYCLE ATTORNEYS AND ReasonsToRide.com Thunder Roads Ohio (TRO) is proud to present the 2019 BUCKEYE THUNDER RUN - a state-wide, summer-long riding challenge with YEAR-ROUND opportunities to WIN by hitting the coolest riding destinations and events across Ohio! This is a riding challenge like no-other and features great prizes every month that you earn by simply getting out to ride and discovering new stops ALL ACROSS OHIO and the MIDWEST!

Checking in at Ride Stops! Designated Ride Stops are listed at ThunderRoadsOhio.com and featured throughout each issue of Thunder Roads Ohio. These stops are selected based upon the recommendations of our readers and confirmed by our editors. ALL STOPS have been screened by our Editors and are places we feel comfortable recommending to you. We never simply add a stop because they are willing to write a check.

Checking in at TRO Tour Stops! Throughout the year, the TRO ROAD CREW will be hitting rides, rallies, bike shows, and various events throughout the state – and beyond! In some cases the CREW will be attending national rallies and other events throughout the Midwest – including Michigan and Pennsylvania motorcycle events. Anywhere the TRO CREW is at – instantly becomes a RIDE STOP! There is a listing of Tour Stops in the magazine and online each month. You can sign in on the Ride Stop Clipboard or check in with your smart phone. “Make Your Own Ride Stop!” Riders can recommend a RIDE STOP by simply “Checking-In” through their facebook account with the hashtag #TRO. Within the post, BTR Riders should say that they are “Making this their Ride Stop” and that we should also. You can also include why – and even do it all within in a posted video as well. Special prizes each month are allocated for these check-in’s and the stop itself can win – if applicable. Selected “MAKE YOUR OWN RIDE STOP’s” have a chance to win up to $5,000 in prizes – and each posting increases their chances to win! In such cases, the person(s) nominating the Stop with their check-in is also eligible for additional prizes as well.

$500 Amazon® Gift Card to be awarded to a chosen Rider nominating a Winning Stop with their check-in!

Riders can take part in special themed tours held throughout the year. Themed Tour Stops! In some cases these themed tours may include a special map and designated series of stops to hit. Riders then hit the designated stops and once completed – they can win special prizes, including Amazon® and Mastercard® Gift Cards* of up to $500! Some tours can be completed in a day – while others may take a weekend, week, or more. Themed Tours are currently under development and possible tours include: OHIO BIKE WEEK WINE COUNTRY TOURS MILITARY / VETERANS TOURS AMISH COUNTRY TOURS

GEVENA / EASTERN ERIE TOUR HOCKING HILLS TOUR MOHICAN TOUR OHIO TWISTIES TOUR

INDIAN LAKE TOUR BUCKEYE LAKE TOUR HAUNTED HOUSE TOUR And many more!

Scavenger Hunts! Special Scavenger Hunts will be offered for a unique ride that’s fun and challenging. Riders will have to be on the look-out for various items, stops, and routes as they seek to complete the HUNT! Riddles and other challenges will be part of the fun. Special prizes will be offered to those that complete the challenge!

(You don’t have to, but it makes things a lot easier and more fun with it.) 3. Get the list of stops each month from your Thunder Roads Magazine, the website (ThunderRoadsOhio.com), or facebook. 4. You can request a Ride Card through our website!

You can now go online and register for your Thunder Run Ride Card through our website – www.ThunderRoadsOhio.com. Simply head to the TRO Online Store and order your Ride Card. There is a $5 convenience fee for this option – but ALL PROCEEDS are applied to our Warrior Fund, sponsoring charitable motorcycle events and organizations across Ohio.

PLEASE NOTE - You can still use your previous Ride Cards. All Ride Card registrations carry over, however you are welcome to pick up a new shiny one if you’d like.

Thunder Roads will also be registering riders for Ride Cards at specific events throughout the year as we distribute magazines. Key events, such as Ohio Bike Week or Bike Nights will have special booth for Ride Card registrations. In most cases, we will be offering special incentives both for those registering for the cards and those checking in with their previously issued cards at these stops. Thunder Roads will also be working with charities and various non-profit events to include them in the Run schedule as well. This will be an easy means of encouraging participation and attracting riders from outside the local communities. In many cases, we will have specific prize drawings for those at these events. The Ride Cards allow participants to easily and safely check in at all stops. Some Thunder Roads Sponsors will also be offering discounts to readers that present the cards. Thunder Roads will be listing special discounts and offers in the magazine throughout the year as an added value to readers and means of encouraging our partners to offer these extra savings.

PLEASE NOTE: Once you have received your OHIO RIDE CARD, you will not be asked to provide personal information or emails at any location for check-in. You simply enter your ride card number! One key aspect of the BTR is that we will be limiting the number of stops to a reasonable amount each month. We are NOT simply adding anyone willing to write a check. We will be considering stops recommended by our readers and editors, and we will only select those that offer a legitimate interest to riders – making them worth the ride to visit. We are not hosting the run as simply a means of supporting the magazine, but as a fun way to promote partners and cool destinations all across the state.

Sport Touring Corner By Norm Kern, TRO Contributor

Complete Guide to MSTA FlyBy Week August 19-25, 2019, at Marietta Ohio

This month, Motorcycle Sport Touring Association's (MSTA) largest regional rally comes to Marietta, Ohio. FlyBy Week offers a full-week celebration of motorcycle sport touring. Like other MSTA events, FlyBy Week is a riding rally- expect the parking lot to be empty during the day, as attendees will all be out riding the twisty roads of southeast Ohio and northern West Virginia. Dining and socializing are done in the evening and there are plenty of fun activities on tap. All roads lead to FlyBy Week- fun ways to get there The southeast quarter of Ohio is filled with rolling countryside and great roads, so it's easy to make your route to FlyBy Week into a personalized fun, twisty ride. We've prepared routes to FlyBy Week from three different parts of Ohio. Fun routes to FlyBy Week They are available in both PDF map/instruction form as well as Garmin GPX format for GPS users. Download them at http://flybyweek.com/ getthere.html

When to go FlyBy Week 18 begins on Monday, August 19th and runs through Sunday, August 25. With more than twenty suggested routes to choose from, you can ride a different route every day and still not do half of them in the entire week. Don't be discouraged if you can't attend the whole week. FlyBy Week started over 20 years ago as a weekendonly event, where many left home after work and made a dash for Marietta so they could arrive Friday night, ride on Saturday, and go home Sunday. 44

THUNDER ROADSÂŽ OHIO MAGAZINE

Over the years, those who had a bit more time began arriving on Thursday. Being able to ride rally routes both Friday and Saturday doubles your riding opportunities at the rally, making the trip even more worthwhile. Several years ago, several of us decided to make the FlyBy into a real vacation and spend the whole week there. The "early birds" had so much fun that we decided to extend the event so everyone can attend as much or little of the rally as they wish. FlyBy Week activities Every day is a riding day, but there are no large organized group rides at FlyBy Week. You can choose one of the official routes, create your own, go sightseeing or whatever strikes your fancy. Ride solo, with friends in small groups or sign up with one of the open groups if you are looking for someone to ride with. Monday through Thursday we have planned a series of dinner tours (transportation provided) to nice restaurants in downtown Marietta. In addition to fine dining, this a perfect opportunity to make new friends and get to know fellow attendees in an informal small-rally atmosphere. Friday is the first big day of FlyBy Week. Many attendees arrive Thursday night so there are lots of people to ride with on Friday. Most of the other attendees arrive throughout the afternoon and into the evening- more folks to meet, bikes to look at and people to ride with. The "outdoor lounge," with tables and chairs under pop-ups located behind the West end of the hotel, becomes the major focal point of the rally. FlyBy Week Outdoor Lounge The traditional "brat burn" cookout will start around

six PM so everyone can enjoy a casual picnic-style dinner together and socialize. The grills will be kept going so if you don't arrive until 8PM, you'll still get a bite to eat. 1908-05. jpg The Brat Burn Saturday is the biggest riding day, so even if you can only come for the weekend, you'll have a great day of riding with lots of fun folks. Since many attendees only get to ride one day, they want to take advantage and ride one of the longer routes. Once again, we'll have a cookout with the usual brats etc, but we may have some upscale choices as well. Grills will stay on for late arrivals, and we will start our closing ceremony at 8PM featuring a door prize drawing of Iron Pony gift cards. The Routes Lots of routes to choose from This year's routes vary from 50 to about 320 miles in length. They fall into several categories-

The best collection of routes you'll find at any rally. With more than twenty routes to choose from, how do you choose? The FlyBy Week EZ Route Selector at http://flybyweek. com/EZselector.html is organized by the above categories. Each route listing includes a complete description, map page, PDF and GPX file downloads.

Short routes (new for 2019) are 50-120 miles in length. Perfect for when you're spending part of the day doing other things or when you get back early from your main ride and just want to go out for another hour or so.

Finding someone to ride with If you are new or looking for someone to ride with, we will have multiple sign-up sheets each day so you can choose a group based on desired riding style etc.

Scenic Touring routes feature simple navigation, scenic views and easy roads. Destination routes take you to great lunch stops and interesting places to visit.

Baymont Inn and Suites 1908-08.jpg Our hotel offers a great place to stay at reasonable cost Under new ownership this year, they are rolling out the red carpet for us. Double rooms are $75 plus tax and include the free breakfast buffet with good bacon and sausage, fresh scrambled eggs etc. The MSTA room rate and block of rooms closes on August 9, so get your event registration and room booking in as soon as possible! Event Registration- $20 (MSTA membership not required) Includes: Routes Cookout on Friday and Saturday Discount hotel rate Sponsored by Thunder Roads Ohio and Iron Pony Motorsports

Complete info and online registration: http://www.flybyweek.com Technical Twisty routes are for hard-core sport-touring riders who can take advantage of GPS navigation and include challenging back roads very few riders know about. If you don't have a GPS and want to ride these routes, we'll help you find someone to ride with who does. Adventure routes (we now have TWO to choose from!) Each route is about 160 miles, taking you through the dirt and gravel roads of Wayne National Forest. The West route has a bit more pavement to reach the Wayne. The new East route turns to gravel just a few miles from Marietta and is at least 80% dirt and gravel. Neither route includes single-track, steep or extremely rough roads- most have been graded this season. Riders of both large and small dual-sport and adventure bikes will enjoy them! Who doesn't love old motorcycles? I can't recall ever meeting a motorcyclist who didn't have some desire to fix up an old motorcycle, or at least want to own one. I have been fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to fix up few motorcycles over the years. If you have the desire to take on a project like this, I highly encourage it. Overall the task appears to be quite daunting, but when you break it down and take things step by step, the project will seem notably less overwhelming. Over the next few months I will be writing a series of articles with a focus on the restoration of a ‘72 Yamaha XS650. Here is where to start: Assess the project and potential: If you are looking for a project bike, spend a little time searching the availability of parts for that bike. A massive shortage of replacement parts can make a project difficult or almost impossible, plus this will also help you estimate a budget for your project. Another good idea is to see what resources are available for technical information and advice. Owner’s forums/clubs are always great places to start looking for this information. Plus sometimes it is easier to locate a suitable bike once you are in the loop of owners and collectors. Find the bike: Before you purchase the bike, try and do a thorough inspection, to be sure that it's actually restorable, and not so far gone that it’s just a parts bike. Is the frame solid and straight, any weld repairs, or structural rust? Speaking of rust--is the tank rusty? Replacement tanks can be expensive or hard to find, and removing the rust can be exceptionally difficult.

gaskets. Now, leaky gaskets should not be unfamiliar territory to a motorcycle mechanic, but when it is all the gaskets, it can be frustrating. So don’t expect a motor to be trouble free just because the odometer shows low mileage. Now let’s say you already have a bike in your garage that you have chosen. Before you dive in and just start tearing stuff apart, make sure you have some space to work on it, and space to store the parts that you take off. Get a few organizing supplies first. Things like, plastic bags with labels that you can write on, masking tape and a marker for larger items. Also plastic totes to keep items in, and have them in a safe and movable manner, plus pen and paper for notes and drawings. Last but not least, a camera. Taking pictures of parts and connectors as you disassemble them will be invaluable when it comes time for reassembly. And of course, print out any manuals or guides that you can get your hands on. Good Luck! Here is a little about our project, the ‘72 Yamaha XS650. This bike was donated to Skidmark Garage by someone who claimed it ran a few years ago but wouldn’t shift. That’s right, it “ran when parked” After an initial inspection by Brian and myself, we evicted the mice from inside the seat. Apparently 70’s seat foam makes for nice mouse housing. We then decided that vintage paint job was amazing and should be saved, plus the trigger start switch/ compression release was possibly the coolest thing ever.

After a thorough inspection, I found the wiring was old, but unmolested. Seat was garbage, the carbs were clogged solid, and the shifter didn’t work right because the bolts were broken off of the left side engine case. Because of this, every time you pulled the clutch in, the pressure from the clutch linkage would make the engine case flex out. Chain was shot and the tires beyond shot. (I was genuinely nervous to put more than 10 psi in them, with my head in close proximity). Suspension - shot. Brakes – surprisingly worked well, but we would rebuild anyways. Motor had good compression and the exhaust was solid and in decent shape. All other components appeared to be present. Check back each month for updates on the progress! Knoble Moto is a partner of Skidmark Garage. We teach classes for the DIY crowd, on all aspects of motorcycle repair. Entry level maintenance, valve adjustments, carburetor cleaning and tuning, drive line service, suspensions, and even engine work. Our class subjects are updated regularly, so check back often. If there is a subject you do not see covered, shoot me an email at knoblemoto@ gmail.com Find us on Facebook at www. facebook.com/knoblemoto, Instagram Knoble_Moto and www.KnobleMoto.com

Upcoming Classes Motorcycle Maintenance 101: Aug 1, Sept 5th, Oct 3rd.

Carburetor Class:

August 8th & 13th (two night event)

Broken/Stripped bolt repair & tap threads: Oct 19th

Fork Seal replacement and suspension setup: Sept 19th

If possible, can you turn the engine over and check for compression? Some sellers may not let you do this, and you have to respect their wishes. What parts need to be replaced, and will that blow your budget? Or should you spend a little more money on a project bike, and not have to replace some expensive parts. Don’t overlook the nickel and dime parts too, because they can add up quickly. Does it have a title? There are a few options for getting a lost title, but they all take time, money, and patience. But enough about money, we don’t do this to save cash. Mileage. Obviously low mileage means there has been little usage on the engine. However that does not mean it is going to be trouble free. Low mileage means it sat. When stuff sits, stuff rots and rusts. Internal motor parts can rust over, and anything rubber can dry out. Many times I have gotten an old motor running, and not long after, it begins leaking out random THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

Tough Enough for Prison I just recently read a few articles that still make me scratch my head. In one article a club storm trooped into a rival clubhouse with their ole ladies in tow, beat up everyone in the rival clubhouse, stole their patches, cell phones and other belongings, and now are all facing federal prison time. In another article, a rival club member was eating dinner with his ole lady at a local restaurant, in comes three or four patches from another club who beat him down in front of God and everyone. All are now facing federal prison time. What these folks have in common is that they are either too arrogant or stupid to think that this would end any other way. Did they think that they are so feared or revered that these victims and citizens would just roll over and let it pass? This country has become a nation of cell phone snowflakes, who are programmed to dial 911 at the first sign of trouble by every ounce of overzealous law enforcement and a judicial system designed to line their own pockets and justify their own existence by locking up and fining everyone they can. The fox is running the hen house. Prosecutors and judges hand out felonies like they are candy. Even the local junkie who decides to knock off the Quickie Mart is smart enough to attempt to hide their identity. Yet these fools are so brazen, they literally wear a giant logo on their backs to ensure they are identified, as they commit multiple felonies. And I ask them, what good are you now? I don’t care how Billy Bad A$$ you think

you are, or maybe you really are, what good are you to your club now locked up for the next 15+ years? How will you contribute to the future of your club? I once had a brother brag to me about his time behind bars as if it’s some rite of passage. I told him, “you know what impresses me more, people who don’t get caught”. I fully understand the issues clubs face standing their ground. At the risk of some prosecutor somewhere trying to rope me into a case down the road as aiding and abetting, I can’t tell you how to commit a crime. But I can sure weigh in how not to… let me tell you, you will not

get away with it 99% of the time if you march into public and act like a fool. So how tough are you? Are you tough enough for prison? Are you tough enough to lose your job, your house, your kids, your wife, and often your club? Or are you smart enough to know when and how to handle your business? Think before you act. Keep it Real, just don’t be stupid… My Road Name is Tabasco. Tabasco.tro@gmail.com

BUCKEYE FIREARMS REPORT The Resurgence of the Revolver by Gary Evens, Buckeye Firearms I've noted that some gun writers are starting to speculate about a resurgence of interest in owning and shooting revolvers, specifically double-action (DA) revolvers. As evidence of this, they point to Kimber's introduction of a revolver to their line of products that had previously been strictly composed of semiautomatic pistols, Colt’s reintroduction of the DA Cobra revolver—something that they had not produced since 1981, and the introduction of new DA revolver models by Smith & Wesson and Ruger. Admittedly, most these new revolvers are focused on the self-defense/ concealed carry/competitive shooting markets, but some are also targeted at hunters. Are these examples an indication that interest in revolvers is reviving? DA revolvers used to be “king”, especially in the Post-World War II time-frame up until the early 1990’s when they were the preferred handgun of law enforcement. However, they started to lose favor to the semi-automatic pistol as those guns became more reliable. The semi-auto pistol offered better fire power because of increased ammunition capacity and the ease with which they could be reloaded. The calibers

semi-auto pistols were offered in — primarily 9mm Luger, .40 S&W, and .45 ACP — were more powerful than the standard .38 Special caliber used by law enforcement. While many departments and agencies had upgraded to revolvers chambered for .357 Magnum, they were still limited in capacity to 5-6 rounds and female officers tended to have difficulty managing the recoil from the powerful magnum cartridges. With the introduction of polymer

frame striker-fired pistols, the amount of effort required to train officers to transition from DA revolvers to semi-auto pistols became easily manageable. I must admit that I like shooting DA revolvers. The first handgun I ever shot was a DA revolver, a Smith & Wesson Model 15. I grew up during the time when revolvers were the most common handgun carried by the police. I am very

comfortable shooting them and I own several. But, are they a good choice for self-defense today? Revolvers are less complex and thus more reliable according to some experts, especially in stressful situations. Clearing malfunctions that occur with a DA revolver is often a simple matter of pulling the trigger again. However, modern semi-auto pistols are just as reliable and the problems they do occasionally experience are usually ammunition and/or magazine-related. Another criticism of the DA revolver is the long and stiff (often gritty) trigger pull they have when shooting in double-action mode. (I usually prefer using the term “press” but “pull” is more descriptive of what you do with a revolver’s trigger.) However, some of the more recent introductions like the Colt Cobra and the Ruger LCR have re-engineering trigger mechanism that make the DA trigger pull much smoother. Older revolvers that have been fired a lot often have very smooth trigger pulls. If you can learn to manage a revolver’s double-action trigger pull, your shooting accuracy will significantly be improved when you switch to shooting a semiautomatic pistol. The single-action trigger pull on a revolver is among the best there is and they can be very accurately shot in this mode. The biggest criticism of DA revolvers is their limited ammunition capacity and the amount of time it takes to reload them. Some revolver advocates point out that on average, violent encounters that involve the use of a handgun are resolved after just 2-3 shots are fired. This is well within the ammunition capacity of DA revolvers. Plus, accessories like moon clips, speed loaders and speed strips have been developed to help speed up the revolver reloading process, but they are still slower than inserting another magazine into a semi-auto pistol. Some manufactures, Smith & Wesson in particular, have come out with DA revolver models that have increased the ammunition capacity to 7, 8, or even 10 rounds, depending on the caliber, and some manufacturers have started chambering them in the more common self-defense calibers like 9mm Luger. One of the biggest advantages of the DA revolver is that they are capable of firing more powerful cartridges than a comparable (in size and weight) semi-auto pistol. No one would argue that the .357 Magnum and .44 Magnum being fired from a revolver are not proven manstoppers. Even a Smith & Wesson J-frame snub-nose revolver chambered in .38 Special +P is more powerful than any pocket pistol chambered in .32 ACP or .380 ACP. Another advantage is that a DA revolver can be fired in close contact or from a pocket and is much less likely to malfunction than a semiautomatic pistol used in a similar manner. Still, are DA revolvers staging a come-back? Only time will tell. I think the semi-auto will continue to be the primary handgun used by law enforcement and private citizens for self-defense. Old-timers will continue to like the DA revolver, and younger shooters may acquire them as novelty items to add to their gun collections. I do not expect the DA revolver to be as popular as they once were, just as the single-action revolvers used during the Old West period have faded from common use — except among those that participate in Cowboy Action Shooting events.

RECIPES

I call these Monster Brownies because they remind me of Frankenstein’s Mobster lol Its a bunch of parts of other recipes put together and they look scary but they are REALLY sweet! Triple Layer Monster Brownies Makes about 12-16 (depending on how you cut them) Brownie layer: 10 tbsp unsalted butter 1 ¼ cups white sugar ¾ cup cocoa powder ½ tsp salt 2 tsp vanilla extract 2 large eggs ½ cup flour

Cheesy Jalapeno Stuffed Chicken Serve 4 (or 2 hungry bikers) 4 chicken breasts 4 tbsp low fat ranch dressing

Cookie layer: 1 reg package of regular Oreo or Nutter Butter cookies ***seasonal colored cookies are fun too***

¼ tsp salt ¼ tsp pepper 4 oz low fat cream cheese

For the Brownie layer: In a medium sauce pan, melt the butter over medium high heat then stir in the sugar and cocoa powder and combine well Add the salt, vanilla and eggs and continuously stir until the eggs are incorporated. Then add the flour and continue to mix, then set aside

4 jalapenos, seeds and veins removed, cut into halves 8 slices turkey bacon (or regular bacon, just adds more calories) Heat your grill to about 350 degrees and cover grates with tin foil (or heat the oven to 350) Pound all chicken breasts to about ¼ inch thickness then sprinkle the outside lightly with salt and pepper Turn chicken over and smear 1 tbsp ranch dressing over the inside of each one Place 2 halves of jalapenos on one end of each breast, then add 1 oz cream cheese as well Starting from the end with the cheese and jalapenos, roll the chicken breasts up around the filling Wrap each roll with 2 pieces of bacon and place on grill (or into oven safe baking sheet if roasting) Cook about 15-20 minutes then turn and cook another 15-20 minutes to an internal temp of 165

Have a recipe that you’d like to share? Write it all down and send with a picture – to ThunderRoadsOhio@gmail. com Put RECIPE in the subject line. If we use it, we’ll send you copies of the magazines and a TRO T-Shirt – so include your address and t-shirt size as well! Thanks! The Iron Cowboy

Cookie Dough layer: ½ cup unsalted butter, softened ¼ cup brown sugar ¾ cup white sugar 1 egg 1 ¼ tsp vanilla extract 1 ¼ cups flour ½ tsp salt ½ tsp baking soda ½ tsp baking powder 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

For the Cookie Dough layer: Cream together the butter and sugars with a mixer then add the eggs and vanilla, making sure to scrape down the sides of the mixing bowl. Add the flour, salt, baking soda and baking powder and mix on low until everything is incorporated. Gently stir in the chocolate chips, then set aside. How to put this monster together: Pre-heat the oven to 350 degrees and line the bottom of a 9x9 baking pan with tin foil. I like to then spray the tin foil with a thick layer of baking spray so the monster comes out easier Press the cookie dough into the bottom of the pan Layer as many oreos or nutter butter cookies as will fit on top of the cookie dough in a single layer ***if ya wanna get really crazy sprinkle M&Ms or caramels in between**** Pour the brownie batter on top of the premade cookie layer and make sure it's evenly layers on top. Bake for 30-35 minutes. Test with a knife to see if the center is done. If the knife comes out clean, let the brownies rest before serving. **I often drizzel caramel on top to make them THAT much more devilish*** lol

FUNNY STUFF BECAUSE EVERYONE NEEDS A GOOD LAUGH NOW AND THEN... A guy goes in for a job interview and sits down with the boss. The boss asks him, "What do you think is your worst quality?" The man says "I'm probably too honest." Why Motorcycles are better than women: Your motorcycle doesn't get mad when you ignore it for a month or so. You don't have to talk to your motorcycle after you ride it. Your motorcycle won't wake you up at 3:00 AM and ask you if you love it. If your Motorcycle doesn't look good, you can paint it or get better parts If your Motorcycle is too loose, you can tighten it If your Motorcycle makes too much noise, you can buy a muffler. If your Motorcycle smokes, you can do something about it. It's always OK to use tie downs on your Motorcycle. Motorcycles always feel like going for a ride. Motorcycles don't care about how many other Motorcycles you have ridden. Motorcycles don't care if you are late Motorcycles don't mind if you look at other Motorcycles, or if you buy Motorcycle magazines You can share your Motorcycle with your friends Your Motorcycle doesn't care what you're wearing when you take it out

The boss says, "That's not a bad thing, I think being honest is a good quality." The man replies, "I don't give a sh*t what you think!" While her husband was at work, a blonde decided to paint their living room. After her husband arrives home, he finds his wife lying on the floor in a pool of sweat while wearing a parka and a jacket. He asked her what she was doing. She said, "I wanted to prove to you that not all blonde women are dumb, and I wanted to do it by painting the living room." He says that he was impressed at the good job she had done, but asked, "Why are you wearing two coats?” She replied, "I read the directions on the paint can, and they said, ''For best results, put on two coats!” A young man walked into our insurance office to purchase coverage for his new motorcycle.

A blonde and brunette are having tea when suddenly the phone rings. The blonde picks it up and immediantely starts crying. Her brunette friend asks her, "Why are you crying dear?" Blonde says, "Because my mom just called and said that my father just died. "I'm so sorry," says the brunette. The blonde finally stops crying, when the phone rings again. She picks it up and starts crying again.

Only one question confused him so he asked, "What is this...Do you have a lien holder on the vehicle?"

The brunette asks again whats wrong, to which the blonde replies, "My brother just called and said that his father died too."

"I've got a kickstand, so I don't need someone to hold it when it leans!
