FROM THE PUBLISHER It seems as though one of the most active discussions in both the motorcycle community and powersports industry – and maybe our nation as a whole – is how to connect with “the next generation”. Many of the clubs and riding organizations struggle with aging membership and the highest priority is how to attract and engage younger riders – the next generation of members. At the North American industry show – 2019 AIMExpo, recently held in Columbus, industry leaders grappled with the idea of how to get new, younger riders. Numerous companies were rolling out new bikes aimed at attracting millennials to riding – some had cutting edge modern features and others had a more retro / nostalgic feel to them. And everywhere you went that was the battle cry – we MUST attract the millennials and younger riders. The thought occurred to me, though, that the only really effective solution wouldn’t really come from a corporate board room – it would come from the motorcycle community. If WE really want younger riders and to attract more people to our lifestyle – we need to get out there and recruit them ourselves. We need to get our kids out riding, we need to invite new people out to our events, and we need to break down the barriers that are keeping them away. That’s the issue. We don’t need “modernized, retro” bikes or bikes that can sync with our social media to share our riding experience. WE – as riders – need to be better AMBASSADORS of our sport and our lifestyle. On a somewhat related note – I’d like to thank everyone for helping to support our 2nd Annual Veteran’s Edition of Thunder Roads Ohio. It’s always been my belief that if we really want to SUPPORT Veterans – we need to actively work to help those in need and not simply wave a flag. We’ve made an effort to include a lot of events and programs that are going on relating to Veterans Day on November 11th. I’d like to encourage everyone to make it a point to attend a Veteran’s Day Ceremony or take part in a program aimed at recognizing those that have served. And if you have kids or Grandkids, make it a point to take them along as well. Even if you haven’t served or even know anyone that’s served – there are some fundamental issues here that I believe a lot of folks are missing. We can all complain about some of the crazy values that seem to be gaining momentum and strength every day our country – but I would challenge you as to what you’ve done to combat it. We can watch in amazement as our kids talk about socialism and claim to reject our Nation’s core values – and we can try to blame it all on the media or those crazy kids in Hollywood – but the question would again be, what have you done to share our core values to “the new folks”.

This year, take the kids to a Veteran’s Day Ceremony someplace. Even if you or they don’t know anyone being recognized – you can try explaining why we are honoring those that have served and sacrificed for our nation. You can let them consider the hard work and dedication it takes to leave your home and family behind, to represent our nation abroad – to face our enemies – and to protect our FREEDOM. Don’t have any kids to bring with you – that’s fine, just come on out and show your own support. If we truly want the next generation to love our country and recognize the sacrifices being made to protect it – we need to be the ones that not only teach that lesson but we need to recognize and honor it ourselves! THE IRON COWBOY Special VETERANS RIDING CALENDAR coming in 2020
National Packard Museum to feature “2 Wheels at the County Fair”
Iron Cowboy has committed to producing a special “Ride Guide Calendar” styled resource focused on our veterans. Veterans events, benefits, and organizations will all be featured in this guide covering the vast majority of Ohio. Not only will this pocket guide include events but it will also feature a directory of organizations and agencies offering assistance and services to Veterans and their families. We envision being able to hand these guides out at events and distribute through partner organizations throughout the state. Our hope is that this can not only help inform vets and their families of service oriented events and programs – but also provide a convenient source of information regarding resources available to them. It is our hope to collaborate with different veterans organizations across the state – both motorcycle oriented and not, to compile the information and produce this unprecedented resource. There are also opportunities for interested organizations and companies to become involved and help sponsor this endeavor. It is our hope that we create this Guide and offer it free of charge to not only the vets we distribute it to – but also allow local nonprofit veterans organizations to promote their legitimate events and services offered to those FREE of charge as well. For more information please email us at ThunderRoadsOhio@ gmail.com PLEASE NOTE – We are looking to immediately add a VETERANS SERVICE Editor for both the magazine and the Veterans Calendars. This person does not need to have any journalism or website experience, but it couldn’t hurt. The ideal person has experience dealing with Vets, enjoys working with the motorcycle community, and can run with a project on their own. We certainly will provide the support and assistance as needed – but we want someone to run with this as if it were there own. You’ll have a chance to make some money doing what you love – and help out Vets far and wide!
The National Packard Museum in Warren OH will once again be hosting their Annual Motorcycle Exhibit in 2020, opening January 11th. This year’s theme is “2 Wheels at the County Fair” – focusing on vintage motorcycles by harkening back to the days of old school dirt track or board track racers and maybe even some vintage servi-cars. These are motorcycles that we might have seen back in the “golden age” of riding – 30’s and 40’s.. maybe older, maybe newer.

THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE
Thunder Roads Ohio is looking to help support the show and host a number of classic vintage bikes at the show as part of a classic TRO themed showcase. If you have a vintage racing bike or something unique that we might have come across 30-40 years ago – or longer – we’d invite you to join us at the Packard and showcase your bike(s)! For more information or to have your bike(s) considered – please email us at BikeShowInfo@gmail.com and include some information on the bikes and a few pictures.

Ohio Announces DOT Grant for Automated Driving Program
The grant was made possible through DOT’s Automated Driving System Demonstration grant program, which supports projects that are meant to generate data to inform rulemaking and encourage collaboration on automated driving systems. DOT plans to announce the full list of grant recipients Sept. 18. “The award of this grant shows that Ohio continues to be at the center of this new transportation technology era,” Gov. Mike DeWine said in the ODOT press release. “Ohio is committed to being at the forefront of connected and autonomous vehicle technology development.” The total investment in this project will be $17.8 million: $7.5 million from the federal government and $10.3 million from the partners in matching funds. ODOT Director Jack Marchbanks said in the press release that the grant will support studies that focus on 32 counties in Ohio’s Appalachian region.
The U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded an Ohio-based team of industry, academic and community partners a $7.5 million grant to develop self-driving vehicles. The grant, which the Ohio Department of Transportation announced Sept. 10, will be used to develop and deploy automated transportation systems on the state’s rural roads and highways. DriveOhio and the Transportation Research Center (TRC) will lead a team of partners, including Ohio State University, Ohio University and the University of Cincinnati, to test the safe integration of automated driving systems over four years. DriveOhio operates within ODOT and ensures that state regulations and public policies accommodate the development of infrastructure and technology needed for smart mobility. The TRC is an independent facility with a 4,500-acre campus in East Liberty that serves as a testing ground for projects related to engineering, research and development, compliance and certification.

Either way, if you’re able to use a computer and have reasonable online skills, we’d love to hear from you. Just email us at ThunderRoadsOhio@gmail.com THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE
“This is a huge win for the state of Ohio,” Marchbanks said. “Although 97% of the nation is rural, and more than half of all U.S. traffic fatalities occur on rural roads, most of this testing to date in other states has been conducted in urban areas. The lessons we learn in Ohio can have enormous benefits for our own state and nationwide as we work to make our transportation system safer.” The testing of automated driving systems will be conducted in various scenarios, ranging from day and night to paved and unpaved roads. Some testing will occur in work zones and during periods of limited visibility. According to ODOT, a driver will be behind the wheel at all times during testing in case human intervention is needed. In places of on-road testing, law enforcement officials will participate in pre-planning, and community meetings will be held to inform the public. “At TRC, we are working every day with innovators to test and improve new technologies that increase highway safety, reduce traffic congestion and make the nation’s transportation system more efficient,” TRC President Brett Roubinek said. “This grant will help maintain Ohio’s leadership in advancing these technologies and help the federal government safely implement automated driving systems across the nation.” Ohio has been a pioneer in the field of automated driving systems. ODOT and its partners created the 33 Smart Mobility Corridor, a 35mile stretch of U.S. Route 33 connecting the TRC to Columbus. In July, the TRC opened its SMARTCenter, a testing facility dedicated to automated and connected vehicles.

ABATE OF OHIO, INC.
COB REPORT Hi to All My Friends, This is the end of the 2019 riding season and I hope everyone had a great year. The start of the year was a little wet and some of our events had to be cancelled. As we all know, the weather is what makes or breaks these events. Every event has made a little money and that is what keeps this grass roots organization moving on and representing every motorcyclist in Ohio. We all are aware that our goal is to make sure that everyone knows to “Look Twice and Save a Life” and “Look out for Motorcycles”. We have these saying on billboards, yard signs, bumper magnets and shirts because our goal is to promote Safety and Awareness. We must be doing a good job because our stats are down again this year. 2018 crashes were 3071 to date and 2019 crashes – 2072. Fatalities dropped from 130 in 2018 to 123 In 2019. Thank you to our motorcycle riders for riding safe and to all the motorists for slowing down and taking that second look.
a meet and greet and fund raising for the ABATE PAC that is free to attend. If you are staying at the hotel for the weekend, check in Friday and the FREE Manager’s Happy Hour starts at 5pm. The Happy Hour is available Saturday evening also and breakfast is free Sat/Sun for those who stay at the hotel. If you would like to pre-register for the seminar or if you have any questions call the ABATE office at 614-319-3644. Ride with in you limits, Mike Stock Chairman of the Board 614-319-3644 chairofboard@abate.com
In my area the local motorcycle dealers have been selling a lot of bikes here lately, and I will bet it’s because of all the great prices on last year’s models. So, you say, what is Mike getting at? To me that means probably a lot of new riders and untrained riders. If you talk to them as an experienced and endorsed rider, make sure they are properly trained at Motorcycle Ohio. When you read this, Motorcycle Ohio should be done with training, but registration will start in February 2020. I set up an information booth at BP Husky Refinery in Toledo, and Kolman and I set up at Worthington Industries in Columbus. These are both safety fairs with all their employees coming through. We go there to talk about Motorcycle Safety and Awareness. Most conversations tend to go into distracted driving, motorcycle riding habits, how to get trained and why we do what we do. It is good that some of us are retired since these events happen on weekdays. If you hear of a company that has events like this let me know and I’ll try to get it set up so that we are represented there. The AMA hosts two bike nights a year. I attended the last one for 2019 and had a very nice time. The entertainment was good, and they had a lot of entries in the bike show. Kolman set up with his “booth on a bike” display. You need to see how you can ride your bike to a bike night and set a great display up. Thank you Kolman. ABATE of Ohio, State Seminar 2020, Information Workshop & Awards Banquet, is January 31 - February 1, 2020. Put this in your 2020 calendar to attend. It is how our members get to know each other and learn how ABATE works for you. The entire Board of Directors is there so you can meet them and get answers to questions that you just can’t do over the phone or internet. To get a motel deal you need to reserve early by calling 614-790-9000. Make sure you are talking to the registrations desk at Embassy Suites Dublin and use code ABA for the discounted rate. The cutoff date is January 10th for the discount, but they do not charge your credit card until the day of the event. New this year, if you just want to do the seminar on Saturday with no banquet, it is only $10.00. The seminar with the banquet is $30.00. Friday evening there is 10 10

MOTORCYCLE MINISTRIES What Price Freedom? You left behind all your family You left your dearest friend You left to fight a battle Not knowing what the end. You left for those you have known And for those you would never meet You left to serve a country That refuses to accept defeat. For freedom, God and Country To go where most won’t go, Sometimes no place to lay your head Suffering heat and wind and cold. November is a Month to Give Thanks…
As the fall colors peak with brilliance, it brings a cool reminder our riding days are more limited. Thankfully, the past month has been one of the best riding months adding cooler temperatures and sunny skies. I have a couple of rides planned toward the end of November and hope the weather holds out. One is to Hocking Hills and the other one is to Ashtabula. Otherwise, it is time to clean our bikes and get them ready for a long winters rest. The TRO calendar was full in October with many options to choose from. This year, I wanted to experience various destinations and October brought the opportunity.
a Thursday and rode to Cumberland, Maryland to meet up with the other riders. It was a perfect weather weekend. This particular ride was planned by the PA Spyder Ryders. The first day, I rode 272 miles to our hotel in Harrisonburg, Virginia for the weekend. Early morning meetings were held and throttles turned at 8:00AM sharp. The first day was spent on the northern end of Skyline Drive completing 285 miles. I did not realize just how grand this area is! Thankfully, as we rode higher and higher, the skies remained clear and we could see the beauty of the Shenandoah Valley.
Virginia is for “Spyder” Lovers…
As I was getting my Spyder services at Value Accessories, the owner mentioned to me about two upcoming rides he and his wife were attending. One was in Maggie Valley, North Carolina and the other one was riding the Skyline Drive in Virginia. Having already ridden to Maggie Valley in 2017 along with the Dragon and Blue Ridge Parkway, I opted for Skyline Drive. We left on 14

The next day, we entered Skyline Drive from the south and completed the entire route. Then we continued on SR 250 riding thru the George Washington National Forest en route to Cass Railroad. The word of the day was “Curvy”! I definitely surpassed my quota of riding curves for the year!! Four of us left on Sunday for our 9-hour ride home. Rick and Teresa Wiles and Mary Ann Devine saved the best for last taking me to the Lost River Sate Park. What a hidden gem! As a side note, people 60 years of age can get a year’s pass for $20 and that covers all state parks. Otherwise the fee for motorcycles coming in Skyline Drive was $25.00. I am especially thankful for my “wind sisters.” I continue to be amazed at the number of women who ride. Recently I met up

absolute peace in my heart. I always think how dangerous it is, knowing that the meaning of courage is to advance even feeling fear. Every time I ride, I think about how wonderful it is. I learned through gestures to communicate with other riders. I spend As of 2017, the transportation and logistics poll listed Ohio having money that I do not have, I gave up many things, but it’s all worth the third largest number of motorcycle registrants followed by it. May I came across this poem from the Asturias Chapter in Oviedo, the angels guard my travels, for they know the road ahead of me. Spain. With permission, it reads, As we come to the close of another great year of rides, The Life That Many Will Not Understand:
I own a motorcycle because of a personal life choice. One day when I am very old and when I cannot ride anymore, it will be in my garage as a trophy of my memories. I have met people who taught me something and have the same spirit.
friendships and memories, let us each take a moment and say “thank you” to everyone who made it possible. I say “thank you” to each and every one of you as well as all the people who included me with an amazing second year of riding. “Don’t count the wheels, just enjoy the ride.” Spyder Lilly Luvee
I meet people now who get wisdom from me. I get wet, I get cold, and I have been hot and afraid. I fell, and I stood up and even injured myself to the brink of death on a couple of occasions. I have been faster than I care to admit. I also laughed out loud with the wind. I spoke a thousand times with myself and still do. I sang and shouted with joy like a madman, and yes…sometimes I cried. I have seen wonderful places because of motorcycles. I have made curves that even my dad would be proud of; other times I made curves full of terror. I stopped many times to see a landscape. I spoke with perfect strangers. KENNEDY STYLE BUCKET LIST What's on a biker's bucket list? Trip to Sturgis? Perhaps Laconia or Daytona? The Dragon or closer to home, the Triple Nickle? What's on a racer's bucket list? Beat their previous fastest time? Move from novice to expert? Track Champion? Qualify and compete in MotoAmerica? Let me introduce you to Scott Nelson. Scott got his first street bike in 1983. As a spectator he saw his first motorcycle race in 1985. His initial reaction " No way could I ever do that". But by the end of the day he was thinking someday.
by: Denise Kennedy, TRO
But imagine starting your first professional race. He describes it as TOTALLY AMAZING!! The rest is a blur. He wanted to stay out of the leaders way and roughly 20 minutes later he finished without being lapped. As Scott says he is proof that you are never to old to GO FOR IT. I am glad that I was able to be at the track to cheer him on. So very proud of you my friend. What's on your bucket list?
Someday took a bit to get here, but in 1995 Scott heard of a YSR racing group in the Mid Atlantic area. After attending one of their events he was, in his words, "hooked". With used leathers and original street tires he went racing on a used YSR50. In 1999 he got the first SV650 that Coleman Powersports got. Working there at the time helped. All he did that first year was safety wiring, big yellow plate (novice) and clubman bars. Stock everything else including a stealthy stock exhaust. He raced that bike a few years and won a few but as is the case for a lot of racers, he ran out of money. Fast forward to 2007. Scott bought a used SV650 and got back into racing with WERA. He won a couple of regional championships in 2009. In general he enjoyed track life. Most would call Scott a gentleman racer. He says his proudest moment in racing was being crowned Champion in the Formula GT Class at Mid-Ohio Vintage Days in 2013. A pretty successful career. So why at the age of 57 would you try to qualify and compete in the Twins Cup in MotoAmerica. Not an easy task for anyone. His bucket list is why! After a crash on a green track in practice, (adrenaline into play here) he qualifies in session one. Unable to pick up more speed in qualifying session two Scott grids on the last row. 16 16

TRO CHAMPIONSHIP BIKE SHOW SERIES
novemBER UPDATE!
The Bike Show Series
Joe Blaha’s 1918 Indian w/ Sidecar
2019 People’s Choice Award Winner Geneva-on-the-Lake THUNDER ZONE Bike Show The TRO Championship Bike Show Series closed out the outdoor bike shows for 2020 with a number of GREAT SHOWS! While weather dampened the spirits for a few and forced rescheduling of a few more – the Geneva-on-the-Lake Thunder Zone Show was bigger than ever as we celebrated our 9th year by moving to a new location right on the water! The Landing Festival Marketplace area – which included The Sunset Bar and Old Firehouse Winery – allowed far more space and incredible park like setting which everyone enjoyed. It was easily one of the biggest Ride-In Bike Shows anywhere in the state with well over a hundred bikes on display in the main area and hundreds more spread throughout the Thunder Zone. Joe Blaha won the Best in Show with his 1918 Indian Trike and Josh Krager returned with “Eye Spy” to capture the People’s Choice Award. Fourteen BEST IN CLASS Awards were given out along with another 14 Judges Choice Awards (see list of winners on page 19 ). Plans are already underway for 2020 – and the expectation is that the Thunder Zone will be even BIGGER AND BETTER! Thanks to Dan Hare and Dave Eggert for Bike Show Photos.
NEW CLASSES for 2020!
For 2020, we will be adding VINTAGE RACING and VINTAGE TOURING classes as options for exhibitors taking part in the BIKE SHOW SERIES. As always, we will require at least 3 bikes in these classes to qualify for a BEST IN CLASS AWARD – but several of the 2019 shows already far exceeded this for these classes, with some amazing bikes. Our hope is that we can encourage more Exhibitors to bring out and show their bikes in these classes with us offering new, distinct classes.

2019 Geneva-on-the-Lake Thunder Zone Bike Show The Bike Show Series Over the last several years, Thunder Roads Ohio has worked to develop the TRO Championship Bike Show Series as a means of showcasing both the rides that our readers have and the amazing works of rolling art that local shops and builders have been producing in an informal, fun format. Along the way, we discovered that many local riders had never participated in a Bike Show – never considering that their bikes were “show worthy”. It turns out though, that most riders have an appreciation – even a love of motorcycles that goes beyond the amount of chrome on a bike or if there are water spots and dust on them. We’ve hosted Bike Shows at indoor venues showcasing bikes with less than a dozen miles on them – and we’ve hosted Bike Shows at outdoor venues ranging from dealership parking lots to grass fields with countless entries still hot from riding in from across the state! Throughout, we’ve discovered that it’s not always the most polished that gets the attention, but it’s the love and work that goes into the bike that everyone appreciates. Even if you’ve never participated in a Bike Show before, we encourage everyone to participate and have fun with the shows! Chances are that you’ll discover a greater appreciation for what makes your bike unique and meet some other folks with a similar passion. And we’re certain you’ll have a blast! The TRO Bike Show Series features local, regional, and nationally recognized shows that all builders and bike owners are welcome to participate in. Vintage, metric, v-twin, customs, restored antiques, “resto-mods”, trikes, and radicals are all welcome to the show. These shows are RIDE-IN shows, meaning the bikes are expected to be ridden and a little bit of road dust is fine. We don’t split hairs over trailering in bikes, but we do require that all bikes must be functioning. They must start and be able to be safely ridden on the road. Most of the shows include voting by event attendees and weighted judges scores. We use this approach to make certain we include both the “popular opinion” and an objective review of the bikes.

Joe’s Tribute Hack
by: Joe Ballard For several years now, I’ve brought two Vietnam themed choppers to Bike Shows and Veterans events across Ohio in effort to both honor those that served in Vietnam and generate awareness for Veteran’s causes and organizations. I focused on Vietnam because that was my era in the ‘60s when my brother and I were in the army with friends and most people I knew from high school. But this motorcycle represents everyone of all wars to show respect for all who have served our country to protect our freedom. We take for granted everyday that our military has become the peacekeepers of the world. I wanted people to look at my bike and be informed of the sacrifices of our veterans and the fallen. I wanted people to stop without walking by like people do with other motorcycles that have just a couple of things on the tank. My bike will (hopefully) make you stop because it connects you to the past to remember the loss of lives of our military, for US! The main use of this Veteran display motorcycle is doing events that support and help Veterans, such as Rally for the Troops, LCPL Nate Deyarmin Run, military funerals, and events put on by Thunder Roads Magazine, AMVets, VFW Eagles, American Legion and more, who are always willing to support Veterans. 1990 Electra Glide FLHS with side car Screamin Eagle with branch heads, Andrews carb, gears & sprockets. The Saluting Marine – A Symbol of Respect and Sacrifice By Roger L. Vance, historynet.com In 2020, Rolling Thunder will be hosting a “Ride for Freedom” in Columbus Ohio on Sunday, May 24 - in the spirit of the Rally that has been traditionally held in Washington D.C. by the Veterans motorcycle organization. After more than 30 years, Rolling Thunder has decided that it will no longer host the event in DC – so Rolling Thunder’s 6 Ohio Chapters and the National Veterans Memorial and Museum (NVMM) are teaming up to invite Veterans from across the Midwest and the entire Nation to Columbus in a celebration of freedom and remembrance. The official announcement was made during the 2019 AIMExpo, also held in Columbus, and event organizers brought Tim Chambers – aka “The Saluting Marine” to help with. Tim Chambers admits to an “overabundance of enthusiasm.” In his 15-year Marine Corps career, that enthusiasm served him well, leading to his series of Forrest Gump–like experiences. “You can get anywhere with enthusiasm,” said Chambers. Like onto the median of Washington’s 23rd Street in Marine
dress blues during Rolling Thunder in 2002, snapping a salute to the bikers rolling by. Despite myriad challenges, Chambers hasn’t missed a Rolling Thunder since, becoming somewhat of a legend who is recognized by millions. The eldest of six children, Chambers learned about discipline and hard work on his grandfather’s 500-acre strawberry farm in Silverton, Ore. “My grampa showed me how to be courteous, treat all people with respect and use common sense,” Chambers said. “And because he always kept his hoe close to my behind, it made the Marine Corps seem easy.” Chambers joined the Marines after high school in 1994. From Parris Island on, he credits his energy and enthusiasm with helping him land many interesting jobs, including protocol chief to a general stationed in Japan and assistant to the chief defense counsel for the Marines in Washington. Sergeant Chambers was also an ardent volunteer for organizations such as Special Olympics and the Muscular Dsytrophy Association. While stationed in Washington from 2000 to 2003, he
participated in the World War II Memorial groundbreaking ceremony and the Korean War Commemoration Committee’s ceremonies for veterans who never received their medals. In 2003 Chambers’ volunteer work earned him recognition as one of five “Very Important Patriots” by the National Military Family Association— and because of that, his face appeared on the Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes cereal box. On September 11, 2001, however, his energy and enthusiasm took a more dramatic turn in Washington. When the Pentagon was hit, he raced to the scene with other Marines and helped in the rescue efforts, entering the building to look for survivors and bodies. Two months later, Chambers and 10 other Marines were awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal. “The whole ordeal reminded me of why the Marine Corps exists,” said Chambers. “We are trained to react. It was a gut check and helped me decide to reenlist.” For his heroics, he was invited to the 2002 Rose Bowl parade to ride on a float with other 9/11 first responders. Chambers first became aware of Rolling Thunder while he was stationed in Washington, and in 2002 the Marine decided to don his dress uniform and

spend the day thanking veterans. But he didn’t think that was enough. He’d attended many funerals on behalf of the Marines, but felt giving a salute at a vet’s funeral was really too late. “That was it,” he said of his impulsive gesture. “I just jumped out there as the parade was happening and popped up a salute. Then I started thinking, ‘Can I make it to the end? If I fall out will I look like a complete idiot?’”
been recently returned. Chambers recalled the Marine Commandant General James Conway’s reaction to seeing him: “He came up to me and said, ‘What are you doing here, Marine? Who invited you?’ I said, ‘The president did, sir!’ That was fun.”
“I just got caught up in the moment,” he said, not thinking it would be more than just a one-time thing. The next year, though, Chambers began his salute at the very beginning of the motorcycle run and held it to the end.
While Tim Chambers’ annual salute, which lasts three to four hours, is a feat in itself, a serious medical condition has made the last three years especially challenging for him. After surgery in 2005, he contracted a serious bacterial infection caused by Methicillinresistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). In Chambers’ case, the bacteria invaded his back muscles and causes flare-ups that require intense therapy and can leave him bedridden for months at a time.
Transferred to California in 2004, Chambers said his run might have ended then. Soon, though, he received validation of his Rolling Thunder salute in the form of a letter from Marine Commandant General Michael Hagee, who wrote about the letters he’d received praising Chambers’ action and congratulating him “for serving as a superb representative of our Marine Corps.” “I was just floored,” Chambers said—and he felt determined to get back the next year. He arranged to take leave to get to Rolling Thunder each year after that, and he has even taken his mother and grandmother with him a few times. Three times he’s accompanied riders from the Run for the Wall or Carry the Flame groups. By 2008 the Marine sergeant had become a Rolling Thunder fixture. That year, after giving the salute, Chambers got a call from an aide to President George W. Bush. He told Chambers the president had seen him that day, was very impressed, and invited him to a Memorial Day breakfast at the White House the next morning. Chambers took his grandmother along, and they met the family of Army Staff Sgt. Matt Maupin, who had been a POW in Iraq and whose remains had just

The recurring illness contributed to Chambers’ decision to leave the Marines in 2009. “The Marine Corps has been my whole life since high school,” he said, “but I knew I could no longer serve. I miss it a lot.” For the last three years, Chambers has suffered flare-ups just prior to Rolling Thunder. In 2011 he was hospitalized for several months before the Memorial Day weekend. Added to that, Chambers also had a broken right wrist. “The first hour is always hell and I have to fight mentally to keep from falling out,” he said. “Over the years, it hasn’t gotten easier. I really thought I was going to fall out last year.” But even though he was clearly struggling, Chambers held his salute until the last bike passed. “I’ll be in better shape this year,” Chambers said in March, noting that the MRSA infection had not returned. “The biggest concern I have is fitting into my uniform,” he said. “I’m 36 now and have been so sick the past few years that I haven’t had much opportunity to work out. But, really it’s more of a mental thing. I’m always thinking, ‘If I drop my salute, can I find a rock I THUNDERROADSOHIO.COM THUNDERROADSOHIO.COM
can crawl under?’” What mostly runs through Chambers’ mind during the salute are thoughts about what he is representing and who he is reaching. “Service members truly have compassion and love for each other,” he said. “The country needs to see this, and Rolling Thunder brings it to life. I feel the need to thank them for doing it.” “I’m floored any time I hear that I’ve touched someone,” said Chambers. “Whenever a mother says I remind them of a son who died—be it in Desert Storm, Iraq, Afghanistan or even Vietnam—it completely blows me away. And when they tell me their stories, I will then tell them to others. Mission accomplished.” And it’s not just a one-way experience for Chambers, who never served in combat. “When the vets stop and salute me, or when active duty soldiers and Marines get off their bikes, it validates me—even though they see what’s not on my chest,” he said. “As long as I am honoring and emulating them and helping people to remember their service and sacrifice, I hope that I will be accepted.” While Tim Chambers admitted to having a few mental tricks to sustain him through the salute, he said he’s found something else that gets him through it. “It’s amazing,” he said. “When the bikes come right by me, the vibrations of the engines run through my body, and it takes away the pain in my arm. I especially love it when they rev up their engines and look me right in the eye and say, ‘Looking good, Tim!’ It means so much to be remembered and respected. There’s nothing better than that.” OHIO’S MOTORCYCLE MOTORCYCLE MAGAZINE MAGAZINE OHIO’S

‘Controlling danger’ — here’s why vets love motorcycles By: Joshua Axelrod, Military Times Motorcycles have always been a part of Stephanie Cutts’ life, for better or worse. Her husband, Frank, died in a motorcycle accident. But the 35-year-old Navy veteran has continued riding, both to honor his memory and because of the relationships she has developed with folks in the motorcycle world. As Cutts has known for years, the motorcycle community is a vibrant, supportive group that brings together anyone who loves bikes as much as she does. It has been especially hospitable to veterans seeking healthy outlets to combat PTSD or other mentalhealth symptoms related to their time in the military. “There obviously is the adrenaline and the dangerous aspects where you have to constantly be on guard,” she said. “I think there is a deeper camaraderie, where you can connect with a stranger instantly and bond over something.”
Quinton Liebenberg (L), gives Stephanie Cutts, a Navy veteran from Greenville, S.C., motorcycle instruction in the Namib Desert during Uuzilo's first motorcycle expedition in July 2018, Swakopmund,
Experts in the military and medical fields agree that activities like motorcycle riding can at least temporarily help veterans dealing with PTSD. It certainly helped Cutts get through her trauma by providing her with a supportive community.
Veterans can participate in a few bike-centric courses through Motorcycle Missions that include a motocross camp, a welding class or a build team where you learn how to construct motorcycles.
“It’s hard to make connections with civilians because you don’t have the same core base of life experience,” she said. “But you can do that with motorcycles because gear heads are gear heads.”
The organization also holds “build-off” competitions where teams of veterans and first responders compete to design and build the best motorcycle. The latest one took place this April in Austin, Texas, between teams representing Austin and Dallas and was sponsored by Indian Motorcycle.
Cutts’ love of motorcycles recently helped book her a once-in-alifetime trip to Africa through Uuzilo, a nonprofit dedicated to taking veterans and anyone else suffering from PTSD on motorcycle tours around Africa. Uuzilo was started by Andrew Councill, who was in a bad place around 2015 after a rough divorce and the death of his father. Councill decided to take a trip to Africa and, on a whim, purchased his first motorcycle there. The feeling of riding through the continent on his bike gave him a peace of mind he never thought he’d have again. “I went from feeling like the most pitiful wretch on earth to feeling like the luckiest person on earth,” he said. Councill isn’t a veteran, but he recognized that a motorcycle helped him heal from his trauma and figured it might help them too. He feels that the type of person who would go into the military is “well-suited” for this high-octane form of therapy. “It’s danger, but it’s controlling danger,” he said. “As soon as you get on a bike and take off in Africa ... you very quickly and instinctively decide if you want to live.” Uuzilo isn’t the only organization that uses motorcycles as a therapeutic tool for veterans. Motorcycle Missions is another nonprofit serving veterans working through trauma by teaching them about the joys of motorcycles. It was founded by Krystal Hess, another nonveteran who credits motorcycles for helping to set her on the path to recovery after getting out of an abusive relationship. “I decided it was time to put into action this program that I had been thinking about and use it as a means of therapy for these guys and girls who struggle and suffer from the traumatic experiences they’ve had serving our country and communities,” she said.
“Support of veterans and the military community is a natural fit for the brand and something we’re very passionate about,” said Indian Motorcycle Senior Director Reid Wilson. Hess said that more than 100 veterans have gone through various Motorcycle Missions programs since 2016. She has worked with veterans who have told her they have stopped drinking, re-kindled a relationship or felt calm enough to go off their medication after working with Motorcycle Missions. “They’re very much programmed to do a job,” she said. “When they come home, they’re not deprogrammed, and they have a hard time getting back into the normal rhythm of things… there are intrusive thoughts, there’s nightmares, anger, aggression, alcohol abuses. Our whole goal is to prevent that from happening and give them a purpose.” That was the case for Matthew Webb, a 34-year-old Marine veteran who was on Team Dallas during that April build-off (Team Austin narrowly won). He said that Motorcycle Missions not only made him realize that bikes are his true passion, but he’s now thinking about “ramrodding my way” into the motorcycle industry as a full-time career. For him, being on a motorcycle is a true “place of peace.” “When you’re riding, there’s so much going on that your body seizes on that adrenaline,” he said. “It puts you in a place where you’re around like-minded individuals… for the most part, everybody that I’ve met is extremely friendly and wants to be involved and wants to get to know you. It’s a great community full of nice, genuine people.” He also wanted to dispel the stereotype that people who drive motorcycles are intimidating. As he put it: “We might look scary, but we’re not!” (Reprinted from Military Times, rebootcamp.militarytimes.com)

VETERANS ORGANIZATIONS There are numerous motorcycle-oriented Veterans groups across Ohio. We’ve included a few here in effort to encourage those looking for Brothers and Sisters to ride with – to take the step and find a group. Comradery and time with folks that you can connect to as a Veteran is invaluable. Thunder Roads Ohio will be regularly featuring Veterans groups within the magazine and online. We will also be publishing a VETERANS RIDE GUIDE for the STATE OF OHIO in 2019. This will include Veteran Oriented motorcycle events and organizations across Ohio – including a calendar covering the entire riding season. It’s our goal to help support countless charitable organizations, events, and the veterans they serve with this program. For information on how your organization or event can be included in upcoming Veterans features or in the VETERANS RIDE GUIDE, email us at ThunderRoadsOhio@gmail.com
American Legion Riders American Legion Riders chapters are well known for their charitable work, which has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for local children's hospitals, schools, veterans’ homes, severely wounded service members and scholarships. Since 2006, riders nationwide have participated in the Legion Legacy Run, to annually raise money for the Legacy Scholarship Fund, established to provide scholarships to children of U.S. military personnel killed since Sept. 11, 2001. There are chapters across Ohio. You can visit the group page on Facebook, American Legion Riders of Ohio – or visit your local American Legion for more information.

Chained Eagles of Ohio Chained Eagles was created by 4 Viet Nam Vets - Jim Rainsburg, Doug Howard, Gary McCoy Sr. and Rex Schoonover in response to the Vietnam POW/MIA issue. The mission was to account for all men listed as missing and yet may still be alive. We created the Ohio POW/MIA Wall to honor the men from Ohio and to keep educating the people to not allow this to happen again. Each year we host a Poker Run out of Jim’s Harley in Mendon Ohio to raise money for our Annual Dayton VA picnic. We offer a hot meal, entertainment and gifts in appreciation of their sacrifices. The gifts range from personal hygiene items to new clothes. Everything we take down stays for the Vets. We also go down for Bingo a few times during the year. We can do all this, thanks to the support we receive from the poker run, donations and other fundraisers. The Chained Eagles don’t keep any of the money raised. We also help other local organizations and events that help Veterans as well. We do our best to take the Wall to as many places as we can for awareness and to honor all Veterans. The biggest mistake people make about the Chained Eagles is they think we are a Motorcycle Club. We are a non-profit organization. A lot of us ride and we consider that a privilege because of the Veterans that fought for our freedoms. The other is we are not “the Chained Eagles”. Our organization is named for “the Chained Eagles” that didn’t come home. We all have a patch on our vest with the name of the soldier that we stand for. You can contact us on Facebook - Chained

General Michael Ferriter, CEO and president of the NVMM said, “Columbus has wholeheartedly embraced this major event. A Bike to Remember Joe Corman’s 1981 Yamaha XS 650 Military Tribute Bike
I was looking for a winter project, something to restore/rebuild and had a Bobber in mind. Since I am a Desert Storm veteran, I have a passion to honor the Lord and the military. Between the two of them, they kept me from going to jail, and made a man out of me. I was heading down a wrong and dangerous path. I thought I would use this Bobber to show my appreciation. So I started rebuilding it with a military theme in mind, to honor all branches of the services, men and women. After several months the bike started to come together. Everything on the bike was painted by spray cans, so mistakes and mind changes were an easy fix. After the bike was done, I thought it looked pretty good, but pretty plain. So, I shot some bullet holes in it and had family and friends that were veterans sign it. Soon after that I entered it into a car/bike show, and when I saw a tear come to the eyes of a WWII veteran when I asked him if he 44
would sign my bike, I knew then I was on the right track. The bike started filling up with signatures of veterans, and I heard stories that some of them needed to let go of, most of which just needed a listening ear. It made me want to honor more and more veterans and first responders. So, I started doing research on all the past wars and conflicts and saw the number of lives that were sacrificed, wounded, missing in action and had died from diseases. Not only the USA side of battle, but our enemies at the time also lost thousands of loved ones and sacrificed family members just as we did. It put tears in my eyes; they were no longer just numbers in a history book. It made me appreciate the freedom we have as Americans, more so than I already had. My wife, daughter and I went to work making up signs with all the wars and conflicts, putting all the KIA, MIA and

POW information that needs to be seen and felt by us on them. The display I set up now along with the bike not only honors our veterans that are still alive, but It also honors and educates us on the heroes that paved the way for us. Even though we (Americans) take our freedom for granted, maybe it will affect others the way it did me. If we could only stop and think from time to time of how many families and lives over the years have been affected by war... When I show my display, listen to stories, talk and/or pray with veterans, I think I accomplish what I set out to do. After the bike gets filled up with the names of heroes, and it seems there is always room for one more, I will clear coat it to protect the names. I have given my family strict orders that when I pass, the bike is to be donated to the VFW or a museum so the names will live on forever. God Bless America, Joe Corman OHIO’S MOTORCYCLE MAGAZINE

MSTA FlyBy Week 2019 Report, Marietta Ohio, August 19-25 What makes for a good Motorcycle Sport Touring Association (MSTA) regional rally? Attendees want a wide choice of
We started by getting friends from central West Virginia to check the southernmost roads on a couple of one-day rides and report back to us. Since the new West Virginia short routes are close to the Ohio river, we checked them along with the existing northern sections of West Virginia routes on Tuesday and Wednesday of the rally, updating affected routes on the website and reloading them on GPS units when needed.
routes that feature twisty, fun roads through nice countryside, inexpensive lodging, good food and drink, and plenty of opportunities to socialize. 2019 was the second year for MSTA FlyBy Week, and we wanted to add some things to the list. Routes Since attendees come primarily for the riding opportunities, maintaining and extending our route library is a top priority. This The Hotel The Baymont Inn Marietta is under new management, and they took good care of us. They gave us the large meeting room just off the lobby for the entire week, allowing a spacious area for registration and other activities. There were plenty of tables and chairs, providing a nice place for attendees to hang out.
year we added a second adventure route, with 160 miles of dirt and gravel roads through Wayne National Forest East of Marietta. We had requests for some shorter routes, so we developed one of about 60 miles in Ohio, northeast of Marietta, and a West Virginia route with two variants of 86 and 115 miles. With a selection of over twenty routes covering 4000 miles, it's not possible to pre-ride them all. Since Ohio roads are in better shape overall, we concentrated on checking as many routes as possible in West Virginia, where conditions have been a bigger problem. 48 48

Registration Online preregistrations ran even with last year, so we were quite surprised when on-site registrations doubled! Some of the regular attendees brought new people with them and many other first-timers just showed up on their own. Lots of new people! We encouraged newcomers to speak up and ask questions, ask for help finding riding partners, etc. It was fun to see their excitement when they came back after their first day of riding with new friends.

Registration was quick and easy so we had plenty of time and resources to help everyone with route selection, GPS setup, loading routes, finding others to ride with, etc. Paper maps and routes? We had those available too!
Cookouts Friday evening was the traditional brat-hot-dog-burger cookout behind the hotel at the "outdoor lounge," where everyone gathers on both Friday and Saturday night.
Massage This year we had free 15 minute mini massages available on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. LMT Anne Marie LaFrance, of Morganton, North Carolina, had ample space in the meeting/ registration room to set up her massage table, including a partitioned private area for full body massage. The hotel provided a large screen TV that Anne Marie used to display therapy animations and demonstrate massage techniques. For Saturday evening, we wanted to do something special for dinner and Indiana squadron MSTA member Helene Villemure ran the show. She and her small army of volunteers made two hundred delicious shish-kabobs for one of the most amazing dinners I have seen at a regional MSTA event.
Dinner Tours Each evening, Monday- Thursday, we had dinner tours to nice restaurants downtown. We gathered at 6:15PM and provided transportation both ways so no one had to put on gear, ride their bike etc. Attendees can enjoy an adult beverage and not worry about driving. Monday and Tuesday when attendance was light, we car pooled. Wednesday we rented a van, and a local trolley bus company provided shuttle service for the big crowd on Thursday. The Galley and Boathouse BBQ were the favorite dining spots.
Sponsors A big Tip of the Helmet goes to our sponsorsDerek Smith at Thunder Roads Ohio magazine has helped us with publicity and promotion from day one, including banners, logos and a ton of editorial space in the magazine. Iron Pony Motorsports, one of the country's largest dealerships, provided promotional help, swag, and Iron Pony gift card door prizes. MSTA member John Smith of Lemon & Barrett's Powersports in nearby Parkersburg, WV, contributed cans of handy chain lube and plastic polish door prizes. Volunteers More than two dozen loyal MSTA members volunteered during FlyBy Week to pull everything together. There isn't enough space to list them all, but special mention goes to lead volunteers Ron Vess, South Salem, OH, who set up the outdoor lounge and parking lot, Chris Shoop, Parkersburg, WV, who organized the dinner tours and Friday cookout, and Helene Villemure, Columbus, IN, who was in charge of the Saturday cookout and amazing shish-kabobs. Next year Mark your calendar for FlyBy Week, August 24-30, 2020. We have some exciting new things planned for our attendees. Online registration and all the latest information will be available on the website by January 1, 2020. Check us out at http://flybyweek.com/

Changing Seasons Well here we are again heading into Fall. I do so miss Fall in the Midwest. Leaves changing colors, that crisp cool air, the smell of burning leaves. Down here in the sunny South we can tell it’s Fall by the changing of the license plates from the snowbirds flocking south. You know that change is coming. But what about your club? Are you heading to new annual elections? You probably should be. Anyone who holds onto power too long is not doing themselves, or your membership any favors. It’s wonderful to have great leaders. And perhaps the body of your club wants to keep great leaders in place. But that shouldn’t prevent anyone who is ready and willing to try and step up and offer their services in a leadership role. I always encourage everyone to step up and run for an office. Don’t get discouraged if you aren’t elected. It shows a willingness to serve your Brotherhood in a higher capacity. After all, you’re in a volunteer organization. You should respect those that are willing to take on the added responsibility of an often “thankless” job. On the other hand, there are some who would run because of their egos and selfservitude. Obviously, I’d suggest you pass on those type of people. They are in it for the power or greed, not for the Brotherhood. Often even those who start out with the best of intentions get caught up in their own ways and prevent new ideas from becoming common place. They get tunnel vision after a while and can’t think outside the box. Or perhaps they’re getting
burned out. It’s human nature. It doesn’t mean they wish ill will on their club. It’s just that they don’t realize it might be time to hand the reigns over to someone with new ideas. A great leader will recognize an up and coming leader, and spend the time to groom them, or encourage them to come up through the ranks and be a leader someday. I know several old patches who have all served in leadership roles at one time in the past, and who helped pass the torch when they had come to the end of their role. Those are the guys that you should continue to talk with often and seek their council when confronted with issues. Many are a wealth of knowledge and have encountered the same conflicts during their tenure. As I’ve often said, your club’s future is often embedded in it’s past. A good leader will recognize when it’s time to shed some of the outdated thought processes and move toward a new day in your organization. Always practice being a leader, even in your current role. Enjoy your pumpkin spiced beers…. And as always... Keep it Real! My Road Name is Tabasco. Tabasco.tro@gmail.com

BUCKEYE FIREARMS REPORT Inland Manufacturing .30 M-1 Carbine By Mark Miller, GunsAmerica.com
You can now buy a newly manufactured Inland M-1 30 Carbine–we’ll get to that in a minute but before we do some background is appropriate… The .30 M-1 Carbine was used by the U.S. Military in WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. The carbine was supplied to allied forces and hung around long after Vietnam. I encountered the M-1 carbine in service with the Bolivian UMOPAR counter-drug police in the 1990s. These fun guns remain popular and effective for civilians today. The idea for the carbine sprang from complaints that the M-1 Garand rifle was too big and bulky for support troops. A small light gun was more convenient for specialists encumbered with heavy weapons, radios or other gear. If you have ever tried to sling a Garand (43.6 inches long and weighing 9.5 pounds) and then use both hands for another task, you understand. This led to a competition in 1941 by major U.S. firearm companies and designers. The Ordnance Bureau rejected the first carbines designs submitted. As depicted in the 1952 movie Carbine Williams starring James Stewart, Winchester hired David Marshall “Carbine” Williams after his release from prison. Williams had designed a short-stroke gas piston system while serving his prison sentence at a North Carolina facility. Winchester had produced a full sized .30-06 rifle, the M-2, as a competitor to the Garand. Williams lightened and improved the M-2 by incorporating his short-stroke piston into the design. Major René Studler of the Ordnance Corps believed this rifle design could be scaled down to a carbine and demanded a prototype as soon as possible. Thirteen days later, Winchester engineers pieced together a crude prototype using the trigger housing from a Winchester M1905
rifle and a modified Garand operating rod. Improvements continued and the M1 Carbine was approved on October 22, 1941. The first M-1 Carbines were delivered in mid-1942, with initial priority given to troops in Europe. Winchester did the design work, but in 1941, the US was mobilizing for wartime production. Several companies geared up to make carbines. Inland Manufacturing, a division of General Motors was destined to produce nearly 3 million firearms in less than 5 years. The Inland Division produced 1,984,189 M-1 Carbines, 140,000 M-1A1 folding stock Carbines, 500,000 M-2 full auto Carbines, and 811 M3(T3) night vision Carbines. The original cost of the M-1 carbine was $42.00 Of the 6,110,730 carbines built during WW2, Inland was the only supplier that made all four
Our family of highly effective pro-gun organizations includes Buckeye Firearms Association, Buckeye Firearms Foundation, and Buckeye Firearms Association PAC. Buckeye Firearms Association (BFA) is a 501(c)(4) social welfare organization that serves as the flagship of our grassroots efforts to defend and advance the right of citizens to own and use firearms for all legal activities, including self-defense, hunting, competition, and recreation. BFA works to pass pro-gun legislation, educate the public through ongoing media relations, provide high-quality firearm classes, and make available a wide variety of resources for gun owners. While anti-gun groups get their funding and support from wealthy activists or big corporations, BFA gets its funding and support from citizens like you who value their Constitutional rights. buckeyefirearms.org
types of carbines, producing 2,625,000 or 43% of the total. Inland was the only manufacturer of the M1A1 folding stock, paratroop version, and was one of only two companies that made the M2 version with selective fire. Inland also was one of two companies that made the M3(T3) carbine with infrared night sight. The M-3 carbine was first used in combat during the invasion of Okinawa. The scope would be used to detect Japanese units infiltrating at night. The M-3 carbine had no iron sights, it used the M2 infrared night sight and illuminator with an effective range of about 70 yards even in total darkness. In his book, US Infantryman in World War II, Robert Rush estimates that thirty percent of Japanese casualties inflicted by small arms fire during the Okinawa campaign were caused by the M3 carbine. Newly Manufactured Inland Manufacturing .30 M-1 My Inland M-1 Carbine came from my uncle. It has a 300,000 serial was made in late 1942. Sometime in the 1950’s it was arsenal rebuilt and got some new parts. Adjustable sights, a bayonet lug, and a new safety lever. It went through at least one war, possibly two or three. The stock is dark and dented, it still has the original stock marked with the serial number. The finish on the metal is good, the strength of the parkerization is amazing. My carbine is very reliable. I should replace

Ammunition The .30 Carbine round remains a good choice for hunting and home defense. It gained a reputation for under-performance in Korea and Vietnam which has been attributed to ammunition produced with lower velocities than the WW2 rounds. The .30 Carbine is twice as powerful as the WW2 .45ACP caliber submachine guns. The M-1 carbine is half the weight of a Thompson submachine gun and provides better range, accuracy, and penetration. Lighter than the .45 ACP, soldiers armed with the carbine can carry more ammunition. The ammunition was also cheaper to manufacture than 30.06 or .45ACP. This was very important, especially when making millions of rounds in a wartime economy. The popularity of the M-1 carbine for collecting, sporting and reenactments have resulted in continued civilian popularity of the cartridge. M-1 carbine Matches began in the 1950s and in 2006, they were reintroduced as part of the National Matches and CMP Travel Games. the recoil spring. Even if they replaced it in the 50’s it is overdue a change. The Carbine was not designed to be extremely accurate, but with Creedmoor ammo, I was able to hold a 2-inch group off the bench at 50 yards. It would have been tighter if I was a better shot. At 100 yards, shooting off hand I was able to keep my hits on a half scale silhouette at 100 yards. The recoil is similar to an AR. The 110-grain bullet moving 2000 FPS has plenty of energy and I would have absolute confidence in it out to 100 yards.

We are in a new golden age of the carbine. Long before AR pistol caliber carbines were conceived, the M-1 carbine was stopping America’s enemies. It remains ready to serve. With new guns, magazines and ammunition, the M-1 is better than ever. For more information on the Inland 1945 M-1 Carbine, visit inland-mfg.com/Inland-Carbines
The M-1 1945 carbines feature many of the same characteristics of the original Inland Carbines and are manufactured in the USA! The M-1 1945 carbine is modeled after the last production model that Inland manufactured in 1945 and features a type 3 bayonet lug / barrel band, adjustable rear sights, push button safety, round bolt, “low wood” walnut stock, and a 15–round magazine. A 30 round mag catch was used to allow high–capacity magazines.

Stopping is Good Steve Knoble, Thunder Roads Ohio Contributor At some point, in all rebuilds and in-depth repairs, you seem to connect with the machine. Each test ride brings a little more joy and connectivity between the owner and the machine. As anyone who has turned enough wrenches knows, at some point, you establish a bond or relationship of sorts between you and the machine. This relationship often involves mixed emotions - but no matter what the emotions - you will always have a bond to that bike. With the XS650 barn find, there has been an interesting bond that has formed. It's not just the standard bond between the machine and myself; this bond included all the students who have turned a wrench on this bike. When your work involves brakes and other essential safety components, the bond only gets stronger. We dove into the brakes in a class where the students and I first disassembled the system and assessed the corrosion and wear. First, we took on the front dual piston caliper. We disassembled the caliper into two pieces, and with the use of a rubber nozzle air gun, we put compressed air into the brake fluid port, and this pushed the pistons out of the caliper. One piston came right out, but the other required some twisting with channel locks, and periodic recompressing until it was finally pushed out with the compressed air. There was a large amount of pitting on the piston and in the bore of the caliper. One student cleaned up the caliper and piston with some scotchbrite, and this knocked down the high spots, but the pitting was deep into the steel. We rebuilt the caliper anyways, because the point of the class is educating people on motorcycle repair, even if the parts are not 100% reusable after the class. THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE
Next, we dove into the master cylinder. Simple disassembly led to the discovery of a large amount of brown goo inside the piston bore. This brown goo is the product of the condensation that has formed inside of the master cylinder and mixed with brake fluid. The goo is an extreme example, but an example nonetheless, of what happens to your brake fluid over time. This is why it is important you flush your brake fluid every few years. Before the disassembly, the front brakes did moderately work. Had I used them and got any temperature built up in the brakes, the water inside their system could have easily boiled - and at that time, I would have had “brake fade”. Brake fade is when the brake fluid boils, and at the boiling point, air is released from the water/fluid mix and, as we all know, air in the braking system prevents the brakes from building up pressure. In simple terms: water equals no brakes, and no brakes equals unintentional tattoo removal. Back to the master cylinder. After disassembly, a student scrubbed it out with a small wire brush and a pipe cleaner. However, much like the brake caliper, the master cylinder bore was badly pitted. For safe operation the master cylinder housing would have to be replaced. But once again, I continued with the rebuild for the progress of the class. The mass of the rebuild is the replacement of seals and springs. When installing new lip seals, it is important to be sure that you do not nick the outer edge of the seal because even one little THUNDERROADSOHIO.COM
nick can cause premature failure of the seal. We reassembled the system, and much to my surprise it sealed and bled out. After the class, I took the bike for a test ride despite it having highly questionable front brakes. I am a firm believer in wearing a full-face helmet, jacket, and gloves, so I did not throw complete caution to the wind. This test ride would not fall under the category of the "safest ideas" therefore I am not endorsing riding on "questionable" brakes. The brakes worked. And they worked surprisingly well, but I will be replacing the entire front brake system with new components, because I don't not know who will be riding this bike in the future. Don't screw around with your front brake. The front brake rebuild and flush is a project the average wrench can complete in their garage with tools and some patience. If you would like to learn more about this or any other motorcycle repair subject, take a class, or stop by Skidmark Garage. Knoble Moto is a partner of Skidmark Garage. We teach classes for the DIY crowd, on all aspects of motorcycle repair. Entry level maintenance, valve adjustments, carburetor cleaning and tuning, drive line service, suspensions, and even engine work. Our class subjects are updated regularly, so check back often. FUNNY STUFF BECAUSE EVERYONE NEEDS A GOOD LAUGH NOW AND THEN...
Rhoda and Harry go for a meal at a Chinese restaurant and order the 'Chicken Surprise.' The waiter brings the meal, served in a lidded cast iron pot. Just as Rhoda is about to serve herself, the lid of the pot rises slightly and she briefly sees two beady little eyes looking around before the lid slams back down. 'Good grief, did you see that?' she asks her husband, Harry. He hasn't, so she asks him to look in the pot. Harry reaches for it and again the lid rises, and he sees two little eyes looking around before it slams down. Rather perturbed, he calls the waiter over, explains what is happening, and demands an explanation. 'Please sir,' stammers the waiter, 'what you order?' Harry replies, 'Chicken Surprise.' 'Ah! So sorry, is mistake' says the waiter, 'I bring you Peeking Duck!' What kind of music did the Pilgrims like? Plymouth Rock If April showers bring May flowers, what do May flowers bring? Pilgrims What happened when the turkey got into a fight? He got the stuffing knocked out of him!

RECIPES
My families favorite for years and years.
Mama’s Holiday Cornbread Stuffing Serve 10-12 (or 5 hungry bikers) 1 – 9” x 13” x 2” pan prebaked cornbread** 8-9 cups chicken stock 5 stalks celery, diced 4 carrots, diced 2 lg onions, diced Turkey giblets lol (yes, not everyone likes innards so they’re, very optional) 1 lb breakfast sausage (I prefer jimmy dean because it’s a bit lower in fat) 1 lb bacon 1 tbsp dry basil 1 tsp dry oregano ½ tsp dry sage 1 tbsp dry rosemary 1 tsp salt 1 tsp pepper 1-2 cup dried cranberries 1-2 cups chopped walnuts **I use 4 boxes of Cornbread mix, the kind you add eggs and milk to, according to the instructions, plus I add in ¼ cup sugar. Then bake per the instructions then allow to cool. You will need enough to make a FULL 9” x 13”x 2” pan. Once cooled, crumble it into one of those bigger turkey roasting aluminum pans you find around the holidays – YES you will need one that big! You can use the prepackaged cornbread cubes but it’s never as good in my opinion. In a large stock pot bring chicken stock to a boil, reduce to mediumlow and add in the celery, carrots, onions, and giblets (if using) and allow to simmer for about 45 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Herbed Turkey Breast
(Double recipe for a whole turkey) 1 whole bone-in turkey Breast 1 tbsp minced garlic 2 tsp dry mustard 1 tbsp rosemary, minced 1 tbsp sage, minced 1 tsp thyme, minced 2 tsp salt 1 tsp black pepper 2 tbsp olive oil 2 tbsp lemon juice 1 cup dry white wine ½ cup chicken stock Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F. In a small bowl, mix the garlic, mustard, herbs, salt, pepper, olive oil, and lemon juice into a paste. Gently pull the skin lose from the meat gently and smear half of the paste directly on the meat, under the skin Spread the rest on the outside of the skin. Pour the wine and stock into the bottom of the roasting pan. Place the turkey breast, skin side up, on a rack in a roasting pan and lightly tent with aluminum foil Roast the turkey, 20 minutes per pound. Remove foil about half way through then continue cooking until the skin is golden brown and has reached an internal temp of 170 (but I always take it out at 165 because it will continue cooking for a while out of the oven) Remove form oven and re-tent with foil for 15 minutes before cutting

Turn off the heat, remove giblets (if using) at this point you can chop them up and add them back, I usually add them to the gravy later for my hubby and his family Stir the basil, oregano, sage , rosemary, salt, and pepper into the stock and allow to sit 10 minutes Meanwhile brown the sausage and bacon, drain well then add it along with the walnuts and dried cranberries to the crumbled cornbread, mix well This next step is not one everyone does, but it will make sense later – pour the stock through a sieve/pasta strainer to separate the veggies form the broth then add the veggies to the cornbread mix and stir well Pour the broth over the cornbread mix until about ¼ stock remains, stir well. (You can add more if you think it is too dry, or less if it seems too wet) It may seem a bit wet but remember you are going to bake it uncovered so it will dry out a bit. Place into a 325 degree oven for 45-50 minutes. Check often, If it begins to get too brown or dry out too much for your taste you can add a bit more stock or cover it with foil for the remaining time I use any remaining stock to make gravy to serve over the dressing! YUM!
