FROM THE PUBLISHER September marks the official end of summer and start of autumn in terms of the calendar seasons – and for far too many, it also means the end of riding season here in the Midwest. In reality, though, nothing could be further from the truth. For many – including me – Fall is the best time to ride, here in Ohio! Certainly, the changing of the leaves and the crisp cooler air give a different feel to the ride. Leathers suddenly become more comfortable and the rains seem to come by less frequently. But that’s not all. For those in the business, especially, summer just seems to have a more frantic feel – as there are always so many rides, bike nights, and destinations calling your name. There’s always at least a few rides to decide between and bike nights seem to be springing up all over the place. In Fall, though, most of the bike nights start winding down and the weekend charity rides aren’t quite as stacked up on the calendar. With less demand, I feel like I can actually start to get out and ride – and really enjoy the journey more. Thankfully, there’s still plenty of places to hit and things to do. And of course, this magazine is packed full of ride stops and places to go. In Road Tales, I discuss two of my favorite events – Thunder on the Strip and the Devil’s Staircase (pg 8) which are great events in areas that are great to ride to and around. Both weekends include TRO Bike Shows – which have become increasingly popular as more and more enthusiasts discover the informal regional, ride-in shows. With over 30 of the shows under our belt, we’ve developed quite a following as many exhibitors start showing at more and more locations. Many have also found that the crowd the shows draw is just as engaging as the bikes themselves. As cool as the bikes are – it’s the people that make the shows! Speaking of shows, Ohio plays host to a major one this month – the AIMExpo. This is North America’s Powersports Trade Show – featuring manufacturers from around the world, many of which are showcasing new models and products that you may have never seen before. The show not only fills the entire Columbus Convention Center – it overflows into surrounding lots and streets with demo rides from at least 9 manufacturers! Thunder Roads Ohio will be there set up with a huge display showcasing some of the most acclaimed builders and their bikes from our bike show series. The AIMExpo represents the cutting edge of the industry, and even if you’re more than comfortable with your current bikes – it’s kinda cool to see the new stuff. From motorcycles and side by sides – to gear and accessories. This is the show where the industry shows off what they have to offer dealers and retailers. And after two industry only days – they open the doors to the consumers. If you love to ride – you don’t want to miss this one. (See The AIMExpo Returns.. on page 36.) As always, I’d encourage you to bring an open mind to the AIMExpo or any other event – just as I encourage everyone to consider all the unique bikes at one of our shows. There are a lot of different bikes being made these days – same as over the years, and there are a lot of exciting new changes being incorporated into some of the designs as well. For many the idea of change, or even simply a different style of bike is a scary thing not to be considered. The AIMExpo is just the place to challenge that and try some new rides. A wide array of motorcycles and powersports vehicles will be there for you to ride in the Demo Area, and you never know what you might find!

It’s really not the specific machines that bind us all – it’s the passion for riding, the sense of freedom, and so much more. It’s the sense of brotherhood that’s developed by being out on the road, riding down the trail, or just on a journey through life – and discovering a kindred spirit along the way. We have a lot of exciting stuff in the works this Fall with plenty of new announcements to come, but for now – we are still riding and out on the road for events. Keep an eye on our facebook page (www.facebook.com/ ThunderRoadsOhio) for updates along the way, though. Hope you get a chance to join us!

As Told By

THE IRON COWBOY

Two Favorite TRO Events to Close out the Riding Season Not to take anything away from any of the other great events that we attend throughout the year, but there are always certain ones that just have a “hometown” feel for us and the TRO Family. Of course Ohio Bike Week will always be the official start of the summer riding season and a chance for us to re-connect with all of our friends and family from across the state. Likewise, Thunder on the Strip in Geneva-on-the-Lake and the Devil’s Staircase AMA Pro Hillclimb Weekend in Oregonia are two of our favorite events and kind of a final “hooorah” to mark the end of our traditional riding season. Both are uniquely regional events that have a cult following in their area, but we’d like to invite EVERYONE to consider joining us at these two great end-of-theyear parties – eh, rallies. Thunder on the Strip, Geneva-on-the-Lake September 5-8, 2019 Let me start off by saying, we are not the promoters of this rally or even really officially involved. Over the years, though, we have partnered with various venues and hosted bike shows and occasionally some other random foolishness there. (One of my all time favorite pictures we’ve ever ran is one of me hosting a burnout contest at Sportsterz – standing on a big block of concrete – while Bernie Thompson from PSI is blowing out the tire on his fire breathing Ultra Classic!) Thunder on the Strip is an old school motorcycle rally dropped into what is described as “Ohio’s First Summer Resort” – Genevaon-the-Lake. GOTL is a scenic little town right on Lake Erie that was originally developed as a resort town following the Civil War. Today it still has a fun, classic resort feel to it – with Penny Arcades and a fun “strip” packed with unique shops, cool attractions, and more than a few bars. And once a year – the town welcomes over bikers from all across the country as they host Thunder on the Strip. The result is hard to describe – something of a cross between The Andy Griffith Show and Daytona Bike Week. It’s just a blast – and virtually everyone I see there calls it their favorite Rally of the year! Go there once and you’ll be hooked. We are. In fact, we hosted our first ever Thunder Roads Ohio Bike Show there 9 years ago at Sportsterz. This year though we’ve moved to a new location and it just might be our biggest and best show ever! We aren't taking anything away from Sportsterz - which is certainly the heart of TOS, but everything just got too packed and didn't have room for a Bike Show. Anyone that's attended can tell ya that. So this year, we've moved down the street to The Landing, which is adjacent to the Firehouse Winery and runs along the shore. There's the Sunset Bar in the middle of a beautiful park-like setting - that's all reserved for the THUNDER ZONE!!! Right on the water! There's live entertainment and numerous bars adjacent to - there's even a FERRIS WHEEL that takes you up and gives an amazing view of the lake and GOTL. And of course, we are across the street from Yankees and Goblin - PARTY CENTRAL - with awesome live music all weekend!

Devil’s Staircase AMA Pro Hillclimb Weekend, Oregonia OH October 12-13, 2019 If you’ve never been to a Hillclimb Race, it might sound a little crazy. So you get on a motorcycle and take it as fast as you can up an almost vertical hill on a track carved out of mud and clay. Oh – and you can jack up your motorcycle with extensions, crazy fuel, and tires that look like they were inspired by a river boat paddle wheeler. Yeah, it’s that crazy – and more than a little dangerous as well. But it’s a real sport, sanctioned by the AMA and this will be 70th year of the race being held in Oregonia – so it’s got more than a little history behind it. Beyond the racing, the event has developed a cult following and a reputation as “The World Famous Party on the Hill!” Last year the event was expanded to two days, with a day Field Meet Day on Saturday before the hillclimbs on Sunday. The Field Meet includes Dirt Drags and Rodeo Games and is an absolute blast for the entire family. We will have a lot more on the Hillclimbs in next month’s magazine, but I’d encourage you to check out the event on our facebook page and see the thousands of pictures we have there from over the years. It’s a great time – and now they’ve added an extra day and camping on site! So, even if you’re from across the state or even out of state – we’d encourage you to mark this one down on the calendar and join us for a weekend of old school motorcycle excitement to close out the 2019 riding season. NOTE – If you’re with a motorcycle organization or business that caters to riders, we have vendor and display spots for both events. These are great opportunities to connect with THOUSANDS of riders in a laid back, casual setting. For more information, email us at BikeShowInfo@gmail.com

TRO will be on site throughout the weekend, but on Saturday we host the 9th ANNUAL GOTL BIKE SHOW!!! And this year - we are KICKING THINGS UP, by adding $500 CASH to the contest!!! Trophies, placards, and $500 CASH! BOOM! You can register online for the Bike Show at ThunderRoadsOhio.com You’ll save a few bucks and even get a FREE Show T-Shirt! 8

Work is currently underway to compile a directory of organizations and agencies offering assistance and services to Veterans in need. This information will be shared in the November Edition of Thunder Roads Ohio and online through ThunderRoadsOhio. com. Ultimately, it is our intention to create a special “Ride Guide Calendar” styled resource focused on our veterans. EVENT 101: Two Wheeled Networking The BEST way to get RIDERS at your event. While Thunder Roads Ohio Magazine is certainly the most “cost effective means of reaching motorcycle enthusiasts across the Midwest” – it’s clear that there is one SURE FIRE, “end-all” means of getting riders to attend your events and that’s TALKING TO OTHER RIDERS! And while that may seem obvious to everyone, it’s easily the most often overlooked aspect of promoting an event or even your organization itself. It’s easy to distribute flyers or place an ad in Thunder Roads for your event – and you’ll get your message out to thousands of riders. You can promote your event digitally through social media and digital ads – and you’ll reach lots of people. And for many, that’s where things end in terms of trying to reach riders. Far too often, people just forget what should be, the most obvious means of recruiting folks – and that’s simply talking to them. Everyone loves the saying “Word of Mouth” is the best form of advertising, but far too many think this means just leaving things for people to casually discuss randomly by chance. In essence, it’s a cop-out for many in terms of marketing themselves or their events. “Oh, we just rely on word of mouth” – which really means ‘we don’t really do anything to get the word out.’ A much better phrase to use is “Direct Contact” – which means that you are going to market your event and organization by talking directly to people. And if you actively engage in discussions with others in order to promote your cause – that’s called Networking. For organizations, we strongly encourage you to get out there and NETWORK within the motorcycle community and if you have an event – this is the BEST way to build a core base of riders that will commit to attending. Here are a few basic ways that you can NETWORK as a motorcycle organization:

associate your event with the “cool folks” they met at the other events and feel more comfortable attending yours. For help in producing cards or handouts, email us at ThunderRoadsOhio@gmail. com Full color, double sided flyers or cards can be as cheap as $200 for 5,000 copies! Network with other Riding Organizations – attend regional calendar or motorcycle rights events. Some areas have networking events already set up for motorcycle organizations. Thunder Roads Ohio helps host a number of regional motorcycle event calendar meetings – that welcome all clubs and riding organizations. These meetings are hosted as an opportunity for groups to come out and discuss the events they are planning and coordinate dates with each other. In some cases, TRO and our local partners then produce Regional Motorcycle Events Calendars that then help share all this information with riders in the area. While the calendars and the funds they raise for local charities are pretty cool – the secondary benefit is the opportunity these meetings create for groups to network and

Attend and Support Other Motorcycle Events – come out as a group whenever possible. Bring your group out and attend other rides and events. The host organization will appreciate this and other riding groups will respect it as well. These other groups may just return the favor and attend your event – and other groups may wish to get the same type of support for their own events. Individual riders will

10 10

THUNDER ROADS® ROADS® OHIO OHIO MAGAZINE MAGAZINE THUNDER

get to know each other. One such calendar meeting has been hosted by the Greater Akron Motorcycle Club for years – and often times over a dozen groups are well represented at the meeting. And as they all announce their upcoming events, the other groups write them down and commit to attending. It’s a beautiful thing. Other

A little bowl of candy – “dum dum” suckers work great – is an effective way to bribe people to stop by and talk with you for a few. The small lollipops are fun and are almost universal in their appeal. They are also very cost effective.

groups – such as ABATE, AMA, and COC often host meetings specifically for riding organizations to get together and network with each other. If these meetings are held in your area – you should certainly get involved if it makes sense for your group to support the host organization.

TIP: When attending other events, bring cards and flyers to hand out

or post – but be sure to ask permission before doing so. We recommend smaller handbills or cards that get people’s attention and have the critical information. Larger 8.5x11 flyers are good for posting on the wall – but are terrible in terms of handing out. We recommend going with 4x6 cards – which can then be stuck in pockets and purses – without getting lost. Business cards with event information often get lost and mixed up with other random stuff. And the smaller cards are cheaper to produce as well!

Set Up a Booth – At local and regional motorcycle events. Bike Nights, Bike Shows, Rallies, and Rides! One of the most efficient and effective means of getting in front of a lot of bikers is to set up a table or booth at local motorcycle events. You only need one or two people and you can distribute materials and talk to hundreds of people in just a single evening. Again, you want to make sure that you have a sufficient supply of promotional materials – flyers, posters, cards, etc. If you’re charging admission for your event, it’s a great idea to let people register for a chance to win free tickets! Just a clipboard with sheets to sign up on – collecting email addresses – works well. Or you can have people fill out slips and drop them into a bucket. You can offer other prizes, but you may end up getting a lot of people that aren’t really interested in your event. If the prize is the event itself – then everyone you sign up essentially wants to go! And then you can send them reminders, etc. Thunder Roads Ohio print and digital campaigns are a great way to reach thousands and create awareness for your upcoming event. Direct contact or networking takes more work and requires more time of you and your organization, and you aren’t going to reach as many people – but it offers you the best chance of getting people to commit. After a positive interaction, riders will feel a connection to you and the event that you’re promoting. This alone will make your event stand out from the dozens, if not hundreds, of other events happening that same day within riding distance. For more help in promoting your event or organization, feel free to contact Thunder Roads Ohio or Iron Cowboy Productions, LLC. You can email us at Events. ThunderRoads@gmail.com

TIP:

If you have a few riders able to attend a ride or event, reach out in advance and offer to help. The host organization will certainly appreciate the gesture, even if they decline. If you are able to bring a few extra volunteers to another event there are a ton of benefits! 1. The other group is almost certain to offer to return the favor or at the very least attend your event. 2. You’re able get some event experience for your crew and possibly pick up some ideas from working the other event. 3. You’re able to get a better sense for the volunteers that you have on your own team, after watching them work the other event.

ABATE OF OHIO, INC.

COB REPORT

Hi Friends,

This has been one of those years, starting out cold and rainy, then hot and more hot and now it seems to be just nice out. I hope all are finding time to get out and get some miles on. Beware though, this is the time of year that things can go terribly wrong. The problem is that you start to think that this motorcycle riding is not that hard, but you are wrong. All the skills that you’ve used to stay upright this long are still very important. Always be ALERT - you never know when something’s going to change RIGHT NOW. A deer can come out of nowhere. A distracted driver can come left of center. A driver can not see you at a stop sign. You could take your mind off what you are doing and make that ultimate mistake. Be ALERT when you’re out riding. With more than half the year gone, the older you get the faster time goes by, we seem to be riding better than we did last year. Last year at this time we had 81 fatalities and to date this year we have 66. Also, there were 7 passenger fatalities, 10 out of state licenses and 5 three-wheel motorcycle fatalities. What I desperately wish we could change but I have not found a way, is that 36 of our fatalities were our own fault. We are better riders than that, are we not? A fact that we can take and run with, only 2 of the 66 fatalities were motorcycle trained, with 1 of those being at fault. The point is, if we were all trained could we save lives? Another thing to consider, 32% of the fatalities did have their helmets on. Talk to your family, friends and brothers to ride SMART and have a good time. The riding season is not quite over so make some time and take a Motorcycle Ohio ‘MO’ riders course. They are still giving classes and will until it snows. I was talking to a group not too long ago and the statement was “I have been riding on my temp every year. I just don’t have time to take a 16-hour course.” Well, take the one-day class for returning riders and at the end of the day you will have your endorsement. Give them a chance to make your ride safer. www.motorcycle.ohio.gov By the time you read this the 2019 Raffle Bike will be in the hands of a new owner. The ABATE of Ohio Foundation is getting ready to start the 2020 Raffle. If you did not win this year, you may be the one next year. For the first half of this year, all new and renewed members received a FREE 2019 raffle ticket and it will be the same for the rest of the year; All new and renewed members will get a 2020 raffle ticket as well.

If you are not a member of ABATE of Ohio, Inc. or even some other organization such as the American Motorcycle Association or Motorcycle Riders Foundation, you are not protecting your Right to Ride. Currently, we at ABATE of Ohio, Inc. are watching Motorcycle Profiling, Facial-Recognition, Distracted Drivers and Hearing protection just to name a few issues. Come get involved and join. Remember you get a FREE raffle ticket. Online at www. abate.com, go to membership or call ABATE at 614-319-3644. We take credit cards. If you don’t like to go to meetings you don’t have to, but you need to be ready to protest when they want to take your rights away. MOTORCYCLE MINISTRIES Seasons come and seasons go… And boy did this Summer go fast! So much was accomplished and so many weekends packed with things to do and places to go! There’s still a lot going on as we rev into September and we are looking forward to seeing many of you before the weather turns a different shade of ride. Have you ever thought about life just being a series of seasons? Like when we are on the younger side of age, it’s the Spring of our lives and we are just busting to get out and bloom! Can’t get enough of the newness of life and we are ready for anything! Then we kind of drop into gear and the Summer of life happens. Plans begin to take shape and we begin to flourish and find our roots growing deeper into the soil of life, we start to bear fruit and mature up somewhat. That leads us into the Fall/Autumn of our lives, the maturity begins to bring us into a harvest of years that blesses us with an abundance of good things if we do it right. Then we begin the Winter of life…not cold, not old, just settled in and ready for the cruise. Every season has its purpose. Every season has its time. Ecclesiastes 3 talks about the seasons of time. It says “for everything there is a season, a time for every activity under heaven. A time to be born, a time to die. A time to plant, a time to harvest. A time to kill and a time to heal. A time to tear down and a time to build up. A time to cry and a time to laugh. A time to grieve and a time to dance. A time to embrace and a time to turn away. A time to search and a time to quit searching. A time to keep and a time to throw away. A time to tear and a time to mend. A time to be quiet and a time to speak. A time to love and a time to hate. A time for war and a time for peace.” Everything has a season, however, it’s how you walk through your season that counts. Will you walk through with your eyes focused on the destiny, or will you walk with your head down and miss the journey on the way? This year, I have watched as a brother who went down was laid to rest and was honored by those he never knew, yet all grieved for him as though they knew him all his days. That’s a special kind of love that is put in us by our Heavenly Father. I have laughed with friends over the craziest things. Embraced the broken, reconnected with old friends, sorted through old things and purged closets, loved those that are unlovely and despised the things that caused pain…yet all in all, as I look back on this season, I find that the good outweighed the bad, the love overcame the evil and the hearts of many found peace from the battles life had thrown at them. That peace is only found in one way…the way…Jesus. Whatever the season you’re in…find the good in it, rest in the peace of it and enjoy the ride! Until next time…. Mary G.

The scammer pretends to be from the Defense Finance and Accounting Service or another military group and contacts members or their spouses by phone, email or text. They may claim that due to computer problems your information was lost and needs to be reentered to process payments. In other cases, their emails contain links or attachments that can put malware on computers to steal passwords and account information. Never give personal information on the phone – or click on links in emails – from someone they don’t know. Also, DFAS and other military organizations never ask for personal financial information, account numbers or passwords.

Payday Loans – You’re Protected By the MLA

“Short-term,” “personal” or “payday” loans are unsecured loans for small amounts – generally $500 or less – that charge big interest rates and fees. (A typical two-week payday loan charging $15 per $100 borrowed equals an annual percentage rate of almost 400%.) Many payday loan companies operate online and advertise “fast cash” and “no credit required.” Active-duty service members are protected from payday loans by the Military Lending Act, which keeps lenders from gouging military personnel with high-interest rates and fees. The MLA gives service members these rights: • A 36% cap on interest rates on loans of under three months. • A lender can’t require them to submit to mandatory arbitration or ask them to give up their rights under state or federal laws, as they can with the general public. • A lender can’t make them agree to a voluntary military allotment – or automatic repayments from their paycheck – for loan approval. • A lender can’t charge them a fee or other penalty if they pay back their loan early.

Berlin Bustles with Bikers What once was a sleepy town nestled among rolling hills and farmlands, Berlin has become one of the top destinations for motorcycle enthusiasts in the state of Ohio. Berlin, Ohio (pronounced ber’-lin) is the oldest existing village in Holmes County; it discovered by John Swigert, a native of Berlin, Germany on July 2, 1816. Located along State Route 39 in Holmes County, Ohio it is conveniently located within an hour’s drive from Akron, Canton, Columbus, Dover, New Philadelphia and Mansfield. County roads make up for some of the best riding around, especially on Sundays since very little traffic is found on the roads. S.E. Ohio Annual Motorcycle Ride Event The sound of loud pipes took over the county roads of Amish Country and drowned out the subtle clip clop of horse’s hooves. The 17th annual S.E. Ohio Motorcycle ride event took place on August 8 – 11.

77 bikers attended this annual event led by Rick Wiles of Value Accessories. After a hearty lunch at Der Dutchman in Walnut Creek, I led them through pronounced farmlands with the most picturesque scenery around. The ride 18

included the Walnut Creek Valley to Charm leading down to New Bedford, Baltic and on to Coshocton County. I would highly recommend this annual event which is held around the first week of August. This three-day event begins in Zanesville with lodging at the Best Western. They ride a large portion of S.E. Ohio into Holmes and Coshocton County, New Martinsville, WV through the National Forest and along the Muskingum River. It is also an escorted ride with all intersection and stop signs blocked for continual riding. Biker Sunday in Amish Country Who would think there would be a Biker Sunday in Amish Country? Well, if you have not heard of this event, you are missing out on a great ride experience. It all began 15 years ago with an idea from LaVerne Yoder who is a member of Grace Church. As a biker himself, he often rode his bike to church and eventually invited friends of his to ride with him. Back then, it was known as Grace Mennonite Church and riding motorcycles to church may not have been the coolest thing to do. (Especially in a conservative area.) But LaVerne had a vision with a mission. He wanted to reach out to other people, even though they may have not had any church affiliation, but who enjoyed riding, so he organized the first Biker Sunday Ride 15 years ago on the first Sunday in October. He was hoping for at least 20 bikes but to his surprise, 47 riders showed up on an 80-degree October day. They rode to West Layfayette for a lunch and that’s how it all started. The next year, one

of their own members, Katie Kline, volunteered to make burgers for the lunch stop. This year’s ride was in her honor, since she passed away the end of June. The second year, 72 riders attended. What makes this event unique is that there has never been a fee to ride. “The ride makes an impact on people lives,” stated LaVerne. The church supplies homemade pastries, coffee and juice in the morning which is before the first church service begins. People often take in the service, and meet other people that rode from various locations in Ohio to attend. John Beachy, also a member of Grace Church, is now heading it up, but LaVerne still attends each year. A lot of time and thought goes into creating the routes which averages 175 – 200 miles. Each ride is escorted with blocks at stop lights, intersections, etc., in order for the ride to be without breaking up. At noon, we gather at a park for lunch where members of the church have arrived in advance to start grilling hamburgs and hotdogs with potato salad, chips and a cold beverage which is also free of charge. T-shirts are available for purchase with an Amish country/biker theme. It is now scheduled for the second Sunday in August. This is a ride you will want to put on your calendar each year. With this ring, I thee Wedd… Are you a bride to be in the month of December? Well, if romance is in the air and you and your special someone are thinking of making it official, we have just the right connection without breaking the bank. “I Thee Wedd Vows by Ana – Wedding Officiant” is offering a great end of the year special to 25 brides. In her own words, “As the spirit of giving during the season, I’m doing 25 days of Christmas. I know it takes money and time to plan your special day, so as a way of being a blessing and giving to my community, I’m booking the December calendar now. Twenty-five brides will receive a free wedding ceremony service provided by me.” MENTION YOU SAW HER IN THUNDER ROADS MAGAZINE to book your December wedding. www.facebook.com/ thesaidido/ THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

My next big ride will be the first 10 days of September as several Spyder Ryders and I will be ryding to Queensbury, New York for an annual Spyder Quest. That is also the big Ladies Adventure Weekend in New Philadelphia, which I have attended the past two years. I guess I’m ready for a new adventure in New York and Vermont this year! “Don’t count the wheels, just enjoy the ride” Spyder Lilly Luvee

The Bike Show Series Over the last several years, Thunder Roads Ohio has worked to develop these local and regional Bike Shows as a means of showcasing both the rides that our readers have and the amazing works of rolling art that local shops and builders have been producing. Along the way, we discovered that many local riders had never participated in a Bike Show – never considering that their bikes were “show worthy”. It turns out though, that most riders have an appreciation – even a love of motorcycles that goes beyond the amount of chrome on a bike or if there are water spots and dust on them. We’ve hosted Bike Shows at indoor venues showcasing bikes with less than a dozen miles on them – and we’ve hosted Bike Shows at outdoor venues ranging from dealership parking lots to grass fields with countless entries still hot from riding in from across the state! Throughout, we’ve discovered that it’s not always the most polished that gets the attention, but it’s the love and work that goes into the bike that everyone appreciates. Even if you’ve never participated in a Bike Show before, we encourage everyone to participate and have fun with the shows! Chances are that you’ll discover a greater appreciation for what makes your bike unique and meet some other folks with a similar passion. And we’re certain you’ll have a blast! The TRO Bike Show Series features local, regional, and nationally recognized shows that all builders and bike owners are welcome to participate in. Vintage, metric, v-twin, customs, restored antiques, “resto-mods”, trikes, and radicals are all welcome to the show. These shows are RIDE-IN shows, meaning the bikes are expected to be ridden and a little bit of road dust is fine. We don’t split hairs over trailering in bikes, but we do require that all bikes must be functioning. They must start and be able to be safely ridden on the road. Most of the shows include voting by event attendees and weighted judges scores. We use this approach to make certain we include both the “popular opinion” and an objective review of the bikes. Interested in coming out? It’s easy! Just visit us online at ThunderRoadsOhio.com and you can register for whichever show you’d like. By Pre-Registering, you are locking in your spot, saving a few dollars, and you’ll even get a FREE T-Shirt! Then come on out to the show! Specifics vary by show, but it’s generally an informal process. You’ll meet other builders and exhibitors – and most likely walk away with more than a few new friends in the motorcycle community.

PLEASE NOTE - You can still use your previous Ride Cards. All Ride Card registrations carry over, however you are welcome to pick up a new shiny one if you’d like.

Thunder Roads will also be registering riders for Ride Cards at specific events throughout the year as we distribute magazines. Key events, such as Ohio Bike Week or Bike Nights will have special booth for Ride Card registrations. In most cases, we will be offering special incentives both for those registering for the cards and those checking in with their previously issued cards at these stops. Thunder Roads will also be working with charities and various non-profit events to include them in the Run schedule as well. This will be an easy means of encouraging participation and attracting riders from outside the local communities. In many cases, we will have specific prize drawings for those at these events. The Ride Cards allow participants to easily and safely check in at all stops. Some Thunder Roads Sponsors will also be offering discounts to readers that present the cards. Thunder Roads will be listing special discounts and offers in the magazine throughout the year as an added value to readers and means of encouraging our partners to offer these extra savings.

PLEASE NOTE: Once you have received your OHIO RIDE CARD, you will not be asked to provide personal information or emails at any location for check-in. You simply enter your ride card number! One key aspect of the BTR is that we will be limiting the number of stops to a reasonable amount each month. We are NOT simply adding anyone willing to write a check. We will be considering stops recommended by our readers and editors, and we will only select those that offer a legitimate interest to riders – making them worth the ride to visit. We are not hosting the run as simply a means of supporting the magazine, but as a fun way to promote partners and cool destinations all across the state.

The AIMExpo Returns to Columbus! North America’s TRADE and CONSUMER Show for the Powersports Industry offers something for everyone! AIMExpo presented by Nationwide – the only trade and consumer show for the North American Powersports Industry – has been reimagined and reinvigorated for 2019 as it returns to its home in Columbus, OH on September 26-29. Part of the show’s evolution includes more focus on the specific lifestyles that drive the passions of the motorcycle and powersports industry. New for 2019, the show floor will embrace three of the main lifestyles that influence today’s consumer buying decisions. Each “neighborhood” will feature its own “community hangout” focusing on the chosen lifestyle segment. These will include The Alley for Urban and Street culture, as well as The Camp for the two- and fourwheel Adventure and Off-road enthusiasts. Finally, The Shop is dedicated to the V-Twin/Cruiser and Custom community.

Custom motorcycles Curated by returning ambassador and renowned custom builder Kevin Dunworth of Dunworth Machines, and selected from the entries for The Shop Builders Invitational, these bikes will be among the best Custom machines from across the country. Each entry will showcase the builder’s skillset and will be eligible to win the valuable grand prize. New Product Showcase Industry Ambassadors will curate a selection of the latest and greatest new parts, gear and accessories to be showcased within each Neighborhood Hangout. If you’re a dealer, discover what your customers will be looking for in your shop; if you’re a consumer, know what you can’t live without! Shop Talks Taking place within each neighborhood, these will be intimate conversations with industry experts designed to provoke thought and inspiration. On trade days, topics will focus on buying trends and content designed to help dealers better connect with their customers. On consumer days, the talks will focus on lifestyle trends and what’s new for V-Twin/Cruiser and Custom riders. Each Shop Talk will have an opportunity for Q&A with the presenting industry leaders. Great Music & Specialty Concessions DJs will create a unique mix of music for each neighborhood, designed to reflect the passion and energy of each. Show attendees can enjoy local IPA and 36

craft beer as well as artisan coffee while immersing themselves in the culture of the lifestyle segment. The Shop will provide the perfect meeting place for visitors who want to take a break from the show floor, grab some food and a drink, listen to some inspiring conversation and immerse themselves in the V-Twin/ Cruiser and Custom culture. *The artwork provided is an artistic impression of The Shop at AIMExpo presented by Nationwide and elements may change. Exhibitors can take advantage of the themed neighborhoods to present products to their target audience. Companies specializing in the V-Twin/Cruiser and Custom market can focus their activities on their target consumers. Similarly, dealers looking for new products will be able to find suitable suppliers more efficiently. And, of course, the public will know exactly where to look for the motorcycles, parts, gear and accessories they’ve been searching for. “We’re excited to bring the diverse lifestyles that create motorcycle and powersports culture to the show floor,” said Andre Albert, Director, Sales and Marketing, MIC Events. “AIMExpo presented by Nationwide will focus on uniting the industry to ensure that Together We Rise. It is our mission to create a stronger industry that is united in its approach to engage the consumer through product showcases, education, customer service and immersive experiences. We hope the neighborhoods we’re creating will allow exhibitors and visitors alike to have a more invigorating experience at the show.” OHIO’S MOTORCYCLE MAGAZINE

INDUSTRY DAYS As in previous years, AIMExpo presented by Nationwide is open to both the trade and consumers. It allows manufacturers to present new products, campaigns, and connect with dealers in an engaging and meaningful environment. It’s also the annual and best opportunity for dealers to meet their current aftermarket vendors, collaborate and find inspiration from colleagues, find new opportunities, and attend education/business development seminars designed to maximize profit and stay ahead of new consumer buying trends and habits. “Together We Rise is a powerful theme for this year’s AIMExpo,” said Kerry Graeber, Vice President MC/ATV Sales and Marketing, Suzuki Motor of America, Inc. “Coming together as the Powersports Industry to recognize, adapt, and take action in today’s challenging business environment is crucial to our future. It’s time to reinforce that unity, commitment, and passion with our fellow business partners, media, and customers.” The first two days of the event – Thursday, September 26 and Friday, September 27 – are dedicated for those in the industry only, while Saturday September 28th and Sunday, September 29th are open to the public. During the Industry Days – the show will host the Powersports Dealer Seminars @AIMExpo – featuring 18 interactive and instructive sessions across three tracks, each curated to the most crucial business needs of any dealer in a changing market. Returning to the lineup for 2019 are the Dealer Roundtables. Scheduled just before the AIMExpo General Session Thursday afternoon, Dealer Roundtables allow dealers to collaborate with their dealer peers about challenges they face as dealership operators. Multiple roundtable discussions will take place concurrently, allowing dealers to take advantage of the knowledge and experience from industry colleagues on various topics. Dealers will be able to capitalize on the intelligence sharing operation with three different 30-minute roundtable sessions. A different topic of discussion will be offered at each table. For more information on the Seminars and Industry aspects of the show – visit AIMEXPOUSA.com.

Can You Feel the Chill? It seems so hard to believe but it’s only 126 Days until Christmas as I write this! Yikes! It seems with all the rain that this summer has been a wash out. There were still many great times being had, but man do the months seem to fly by! Of course, as most of you know I live in Florida, so winter is prime time to ride! I know there are still some great events left to attend this year in the North! Just take a peek at the events section in this month’s edition and make some plans! We still have Biketoberfest at the end of the year down here in Florida! I look forward to the cooler riding temps! I do love riding at night in a tank top, but the days are brutal! You probably still have plenty of club parties to attend as well. Make the most of it! We sure never know when our number will come up, so enjoy every day in the wind that you can! Unfortunately, we’ve also lost some dear friends and brothers already this year in accidents and health issues. So, continue to be vigilant in watching the other guy! I pray we don’t lose any more this year. Most of us have full schedules between work, kids, grandkids, club events etc. Sometimes we feel like we are spread thin! There are times it’s best to just take a break and take off alone, or with a brother or ole lady and just go! I’d like to plan a trip to the Blue Ridge Parkway. It seems like I’m always on a mission to get to where I’m going, and then get back for work. I feel like I miss the road in between. I think I need to make the trip the destination one

of these days. I’d love a trip out Route 66, or in the mountains. Fall is a wonderful time to get out there and enjoy a comfortable breeze. It won’t be long until you see those first few flakes of snow! Well, you will but I won’t. Haha. Can you feel the chill? It’s not too late to make some more memories this year with your brothers and friends! Life flies by, so Enjoy the Ride! Keep it Real! My Road name is Tabasco! Tabasco.tro@gmail .com

BUCKEYE FIREARMS REPORT Most Important Aspects of Selecting a Handgun for Self-Defense: Fit and Function By Mark Miller, GunsAmerica.com

Selecting a handgun should be easy. We are truly in a golden age of handgun development with many well-made reliable choices. That is the problem for some shooters, the vast array of choices can seem daunting. Once you apply some common sense, you can get a model that fits your hands and your needs. There is an old story about a Texas Ranger. He was attending a social event with his family, wearing his issue sidearm. A woman approached the Ranger and said “I see you are wearing a pistol, are you expecting trouble?” The Ranger replied politely, “Why no ma’am, if I was expecting trouble, I would have brought a rifle.” Pistols aren’t what you bring to a fight, they are what you have when you don’t expect a fight. They are designed to keep you alive long enough to get to a rifle. They make it easier to “have a gun.” Given that the pistol is not a primary weapon, how much pistol is enough? One school of thought is that a .22 (.25 or .380 or .32) will be fine because you will be at close range and you can “shove it under his chin and empty the magazine.” The small pistol you carry is infinitely better than the large frame .44 at home. More than once, I have heard the argument that the .22 is used by assassins and poachers (I am not sure where this common knowledge comes from) and has killed many people. My response: For uncounted millennia far back into pre-history, the sharp stick was the dominant weapon on the battlefield. Arguably it is highly effective and has killed countless millions of humans and game animals. Some claim it drove the great Wooly Mammoth to extinction. In spite of this, I choose to carry a more efficient tool which harnesses chemical energy. A lot of chemical energy. Another point of view emphasizes shot placement and accuracy. These guys say that handgun rounds won’t reliably stop a threat unless you shoot repeatedly with a large-caliber and get good hits. They advocate full-size guns with calibers beginning in four. There is an old saying among hunting guides; “Don’t hunt something unless you have enough gun to kill it.” The most important quality a handgun must have is portability. If you will not carry it with you (for most of us, that means concealed) you may as well bring a rifle. This makes small handguns valuable. I have heard a thousand variations of this- “The 54 54

The SIG 229 is a quality mid-size handgun. The decocker and double action trigger require good reach.

Secret Service carries the Sig 229 in .357 Sig. They protect the President, so that must be the best gun out there. I want to carry a 229 in .357 Sig” Some people want a gun because the SEALs use it or they heard that Special Forces have it or the police carry it. These may be good indicators of a quality but your requirements are not the same as theirs and you may find that what works for them is merely an over-priced range toy for you. To me, this sounds just like “Michael Jordan was the best basketball player in history. He wore size 14 Air Jordans. I want to wear size 14 Air Jordans.” If the gun doesn’t fit, you need better kit. The gun must fit the shooter. If your hands are large or small, fingers are long or short, the gun must fit your hands. Imagine an Olympic runner with the finest, most technologically advanced shoes on Earth. Now imagine one of the shoes is several sizes to small and the other too big. The runner’s potential speed would go unrealized because of poor equipment fit. A gun that fits the shooter will be faster into action, inspire better mindset in the shooter and be more efficiently operated. All of these are key advantages in a fight. The practical accuracy of a handgun depends much more on the fit to the individual user than on the gun’s potential mechanical accuracy.

The Beretta 92 is a proven classic but the long trigger pull requires long fingers. Trigger manipulation is the most profound fundamental in shooting. A heavy and long double action trigger pull can make it difficult to shoot accurately under stress even though they have great potential accuracy. For people with small hands, long trigger pulls require constant adjustment of the grip to gain leverage. People with big hands have trouble with sub-compact guns. This doesn’t encourage rapid shooting. Many ranges offer rental guns. The best technique for checking handgun fit is to get a gun on the range, manipulate all the controls (right and left handed) and then shoot it. If you can reach the controls without major changes in grip and manage the recoil, you have a viable candidate for your new pistol. OHIO’S MOTORCYCLE MOTORCYCLE MAGAZINE MAGAZINE OHIO’S

In the days of “Saturday Night Specials” cheap handguns fired small rounds and had little chance of hitting a man-sized target at 25 yards and a smaller chance of functioning long enough to empty a magazine. Modern custom pistols can shoot one ragged hole at 25 yards from a machine rest, and production handguns normally shoot head sized groups. Your results may vary. The Police Marksman Association conducted a study which examined 180 cases where the Law enforcement Officers WON the confrontation. The results: – Average distance was 20 feet – Average number of rounds fired: 3.5. This was dependent on caliber; with a .357 Magnum the average was 2.3 rounds and 9 mm it was 5.5 rounds, and other calibers fell in between these two figures – Police Officers hit 61.5% of time Civilians have similar distances in their confrontations. If someone is going to steal your wallet or try to rape you, they have to get close. They will try to approach without alarming their prey and will not become threatening until they are within conversational distances. At typical shootout distances, most guns on the market have the mechanical accuracy to hit the vital areas of a threat. The bad news is that potential mechanical accuracy may not translate into hits on a threat under stress.

The Smith and Wesson M&P 340 is small and light. Before you carry it with .357 rounds, you should shoot them at the range.

I want a quality gun which has high potential accuracy and high reliability. With modern manufacturing techniques, accuracy and reliability are not polar opposites; both are possible in the same gun. If forced to choose, I prefer reliability over accuracy.

Target shooting doesn’t predict performance in defensive shootings. Reality-based training using Simunitions or airsoft is more relevant. If money is short, buy a factory gun and highquality training. Stress can translate into poor trigger control and poor aim.

A handgun which shoots a smaller group than another handgun with the same ammunition is likely to have been made with more precision. An accurate handgun is not necessarily less reliable. Closer tolerances come from quality manufacturing. This quality translates into consistent lock-up and accuracy. Making a precision weapon that works reliably is harder and generally more expensive.

Human threats don’t have scoring rings indicating vital areas. Your ignorance of human anatomy may negate the potential accuracy of your gun. If someone is attacking you, you will probably move. Threats tend to move too, especially if you pull a handgun out and start shooting. Sight alignment and point shooting become significantly harder when we add movement or other tasks like blocking or receiving punches. Even with great marksmanship abilities, people miss close, large targets in real fights, sometimes missing completely.

Short barreled handguns can be as accurate as or better than long barrels when fired from a rest, but there are two other critical issues. The longer the barrel, the faster the bullet goes, imparting more energy. Long barreled guns provide a longer sight radius and often balance better. If the gun becomes so big that you will not carry it, those advantages are moot. To be useful, a handgun must be capable of stopping a hostile human from doing us or others physical harm. We need bullets of sufficient energy to penetrate to the brain or spine for instant incapacitation, or into the heart or major blood vessel to produce a quick stop. Based on my examination of ballistic data, I believe that modern hollow point ammo in calibers 9mm and above offer sufficient energy to use on human threats. Anything less may have poor outcomes. Carefully select defensive ammo. Shoot enough of your selected ammo to make sure it is accurate and reliable in YOUR handgun.

56 56

To sum it up: Most American factory guns are accurate and reliable enough out of the box for defensive shooting. Get the best gun you can afford to train with. Quality is expensive. Carefully select a gun with an adequate caliber which fits your hands and is small enough that you will carry it. Train with your chosen gun and ammo. Get reality-based training. Make friends. Who doesn't love old motorcycles? Knoble Moto: Tearing into the 72 XS650! Last month, I started a series of articles on the progress of our 72 Yamaha XS650. This month, we performed the initial “return-to-life” service and brought the carbs back from the dead. In a recent Maintenance 101 class, we performed an oil change on the bike, drained the oil, and found metal shavings. These shaving were larger than what one would normally find during a regular oil change, so there is some notable wear inside the engine and transmission. However, these old XS650 engines are pretty tough so I decided to keep moving forward with the project without splitting the engine case. Moving forward, we changed the oil and filters and then filled the engine with conventional oil. I selected conventional oil because I’m guessing there was some corrosion inside the engine, as well as obvious wear due to the metal shavings. As a result, when the engine is restarted it may go through a “break-in process” in a way. It's important to remember that an engine will not “break-in” with synthetic oil because frankly, synthetic oil works that well. Later into the 101 class, we installed new spark plugs too. When working on an old bike, this should be done on a regular basis. Just a few overly rich cycles of engine, and your plugs can get fouled with carbon. Once this occurs, the plug will inconsistently fire and this will make tuning difficult or impossible. *Plugs were gapped to manufactures specifications. After the class, I removed the carburetors and disassembled them. All the screws

came out without requiring a sacrifice to the motorcycle gods. The carbs had obviously been sitting for an extremely long time and were clogged. I soaked the carbs in a sonic cleaner for ten hours, but the fuel intake tube was still clogged solid. The residue from the old fuel (and who knows what else) was packed in there so hard, I had to use a drill and a drill bit to open up the fuel intake tube. To clean the other passages, I used a torch tip cleaner. These are designed for oxy-acetylene torch tips, and they have a light file surface on the sides of each cleaner, so it is important to be cautious that you do not take any metal off when cleaning the ports and jets of a carburetor. You wouldn't want to accidentally re-jet your bike by taking a little brass off somewhere. Afterwards I soaked the carb bodies in the sonic cleaner for another hour. Then I broke out the dental picks to scrape the passages clean again. (It's nice to be on that end of the dental scraper for once). I also soaked the jets in the sonic cleaner this entire time. Once I cleaned all the jets and the carb passages, I reassembled with new gaskets from Cometic Gasket. It is worth noting that when the carbs are manufactured, they are cross-drilled from a few different angles to form the ports and passages, and extra holes are then plugged. This creates a problem where you have dead end passages inside your carb, and gunk gets stuck in there despite your best cleaning efforts. Often I will reassemble my carbs, and the jets or ports will immediately reclog, then I have to disassemble and clean once again. So don't get discouraged if you have to clean your carbs multiple times. Patience and attention to detail is important here. At one of the carb classes, I reassembled and tuned the carbs as a demonstration for the class. On the second night, I installed the carbs on the bike. After quite a few kicks, some swearing, and a few puffs of smoke, the XS, once again, breathed to life. At the class I did a little more tuning and syncing, and it ran pretty okay. After the class, I disassembled the carbs to clean them again, and predictably, more gunk was located in the idle jet circuit. The idle circuit is almost always the most challenging circuit to get clean. This is due to that particular system having the smallest passages and orifices. I reassembled, kicked a few more times, and once again combustion happened, and the bike wheezed back to existence. I subsequently did a burnout, because I am mature like that. *The video is on my YouTube page. Then, despite the terrible THUNDERROADSOHIO.COM

suspension, dry rotted tires, and highly questionable brakes - I took it for a ride around the industrial neighborhood. *I am not recommending you try this. No matter how many times I get an old bike on the road, the feeling of success during that first ride never gets old. I returned to Skidmark Garage where low cost beers were had in celebration. In the upcoming Suspension Workshop, we will be rebuilding the front forks and replacing the fork seals on the XS650. Later this year, I will be holding another workshop to replace the chain and sprockets. If you are interested in getting involved, please don’t hesitate to sign up for a workshop. Check back next month for fine-tuning of the engine, more joy rides of questionable safety, and the discovery of case flex on the engine. Knoble Moto is a partner of Skidmark Garage. We teach classes for the DIY crowd, on all aspects of motorcycle repair. Entry level maintenance, valve adjustments, carburetor cleaning and tuning, drive line service, suspensions, and even engine work. Our class subjects are updated regularly, so check back often. If there is a subject you do not see covered, shoot me an email at knoblemoto@ gmail.com Find us on Facebook at www. facebook.com/knoblemoto, Instagram Knoble_Moto and www.KnobleMoto.com OHIO’S MOTORCYCLE MAGAZINE

RECIPES

This is one of those good old recipes everyone should know. Perfect for this fall weather! Crock Pot Beef Stew Serve 4-6 (or 3 hungry bikers) This cold rainy day is begging for a hot pot of Grannys Ham and Bean soup. Just makes everything better!

2 pounds beef stew meat, chopped into bite-sized pieces 2 tsp of your favorite seasoning salt 3 tbsp flour 1 medium onion, finely chopped 3 celery ribs, chopped 2-3 tbsp garlic, minced 2 cups baby carrots, chopped 4-5 red potatoes, chopped into bite-sized pieces (about 3-4 cups) 6-8 cups beef stock 1 cup water 1-2 tbsp dried rosemary ¼ cup butter, melted and hot ¼ cup flour

Classic Ham and Bean Soup Serve 4-6 (or 3 hungry bikers) 2 cups dry navy beans (or you can use 6 cups canned, drained, rinsed) 1 tbsp oil 2 cups celery, chopped 2 cups carrots, chopped 1 large onion, finely chopped 3 cloves garlic, finely minced 8-9 cups chicken stock 4 sprigs fresh thyme, or 2 teaspoons dry ¼ cup fresh parsley or 1 tbsp. dry ½ teaspoon fresh ground pepper 1 ham bone (If you have it – just makes the soup so much better) 4-5 cups leftover ham Prepare dried beans by soaking them in cold water over night, or you can do the boil for an hour fast method, either one works, drain, rinse and set aside (if using canned beans just add them after you bring the stock to a boil) In large stock pot heat oil and sauté celery, carrots, onions and garlic until tender. Pour in the chicken stock and bring to a boil Add beans, ham, ham bone, parsley, thyme and pepper), stir well Bring back to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer covered for 2-3 hours. Serve with a side of crusty bread

Heat your crock pot on high In a small bowl season your meat with your favorite seasoning salt, I use McCormicks lol Add the beef to the preheated crockpot, cover and allow to cook for about 5 minutes With a large spoon, stir the meat around and cover again to cook another 5 minutes You will notice the juices will begin to flow out of the meat, now is when you should add the 3 tbsp flour, stir well to coat and cover to cook another 3-4 minutes allowing all the flour to be soaked up Add in the onion, celery, garlic, carrots, and potatoes, stir well Pour in the beef stock, water, and rosemary, again stir well and cover to cook 3 hours on high or 5 hours on low Melt the butter in a microwave in a small bowl, add in the flour and stir to make a paste Add in about 1 cup of hot stock from the crockpot into the paste, stir well then pour it into the beef stew to help thicken the broth Cook for another 1-2 hours on low, serve hot with polenta or bread!

FUNNY STUFF BECAUSE EVERYONE NEEDS A GOOD LAUGH NOW AND THEN...

Have a Peanut A tour bus driver drives with a bus full of seniors down a highway, when he is tapped on his shoulder by a little old lady. She offers him a handful of peanuts, which he gratefully munches up. After approximately 15 minutes, she taps him on his shoulder again and she hands him another handful of peanuts. She repeats this gesture about eight times. At the ninth time he asks the little old lady why they do not eat the peanuts themselves, whereupon she replies that it is not possible because of their old teeth, they are not able to chew them. "Why do you buy them then?" he asks puzzled, whereupon the old lady answers, "We just love the chocolate around them. Confidence A Kindergarten teacher was walking around the classroom observing the students while they were drawing. Stopping at the desk of one little girl who was working hard on her drawing, the teacher asked what the girl was drawing. The girl replied, "I'm drawing God." The teacher paused and said, "But no one knows what God looks like." Without missing a beat, or looking up from her drawing, the girl replied, "They will in a minute."
