BEARS VINTAGE UPDATE

MOTO CAMPING

Over the year’s one of our favorite stops to recommend to Harley-Davidson owners or simply motorcycl e enthusiasts was undoubtedly BEAR’S VINTAGE METALWORKS in Ravenna, Ohio. This unique shop had something for every Harley owner – and plenty for those that simply had a passion for riding or interest in things from long ago. And it wasn’t just the shop and what they had to offer – but the people that made it such a great stop. Sharon and Bear had a great crew of folks that made everyone feel like an old friend – even if it was your first time there! Sadly, though, the shop closed their doors for most of the Pandemic and then the word spread that Sharon and Bear had sold the business. Then we heard that they simply sold the retail parts business and motorcycle repair aspects of the shop. We decided that we needed to check in and get the scoop, and of course – we want to share this news with our riding community! This update is for anyone that is a friend or customer, as well as all the riders that have visited our store – Bear’s Vintage Metalworks & Museum in Ravenna. Yes, we are still closed. But, the reason is that we are going through a BIG CHANGE. We are transforming our retail parts store into an expanded Motorcycle Museum – with far more bikes and artifacts than we ever had before!

We’ve sold our parts inventory to “Crazy Boar’s Custom Cycle”. These are great folks and represent the next generation of motorcycle retail and repair. This is exactly what we wanted to do – to “pass the torch” onto younger motorcycle enthusiasts. We’re confident that they will continue on our tradition of offering hard to find parts and great service to all of the customers we’ve served over the years. This sale has now freed us to pursue our goal of dedicating our entire historic building to serving as a museum of motorcycles and related memorabilia. The small museum that we had before has been expanded, with all new displays and one-of-a-kind collections. For years, Bear has been hunting down leads and searching the web for motorcycles and unique artifacts. With the shop closed due to the pandemic, he’s been able to devote even more time to this – and our collection has GROWN. We now have an even more amazing collection of bikes and unique items spanning over 10 decades of riding. This transformation has taken a lot longer than we had anticipated, but we are hoping to re-open the building as a dedicated motorcycle museum in early summer. Bear and I have planned this change to carry us into our retirement. We plan on giving tours through the new museum and running a small retail shop with t-shirts and other small collectibles in the front. You’ll also see the familiar faces of Jimi, Santa, Joe, and Whisper there!

Please stay tuned to Thunder Roads Magazine and our website / Facebook for updates and news on our re-opening. We’re looking forward to seeing everyone, but please be patient with us as we launch this new venture in our 42nd year in the motorcycle business. See you Soon, and Ride Safe! Old ranch owner John farmed a small ranch in Montana. The Montana Wage and Hour Department claimed he was not paying proper wages to his workers and sent an agent out to interview him. ‘I need a list of your employees and how much you pay them,’ demanded the agent. ‘Well,’ replied old John, ‘There’s my ranch hand who’s been with me for 3 years. I pay him $600 a week plus free room and board. The cook has been here for 18 months, and I pay her $500 a week plus free room and board. Then there’s the half-wit who works about 18 hours every day and does about 90% of all the work around here. He makes about $10 per week, pays his own room and board and I buy him a bottle of bourbon every Saturday night.’ ‘That’s the guy I want to talk to, the half-wit,’ says the agent. ‘That would be me,’ replied old rancher John.

BECAUSE EVERYONE NEEDS A GOOD LAUGH NOW AND THEN...

Driving through Southern California, I stopped at a roadside stand that sold fruit, vegetables and crafts. As I went to pay, I noticed the young woman behind the counter was painting a sign. “Why the new sign?” I asked. “My boyfriend didn’t approve of the old one,” she said. When I glanced at what hung above the counter, I understood. It declared: “Local Honey Dates Nuts”

Both routes: If you want to practice riding on gravel roads, these are good routes- nothing difficult. Any road bike will work, but it's more fun on a BMW GS, KTM Adventure or Suzuki V Strom of any size. If you'd like to look over and download my two new Indiana gravel road routes, visit the Norms Rides web page at

I have not had the opportunity to explore the SEIL South of Brookville yet, but Chad says the riding down there is more technical and better suited for dual-sport bikes. Full information and download links for the SEIL can be found at

https://norms-rides.flybyweek.com/ I applied for an Ohio CHL and was denied. Can I now carry without a license?

No. Nothing changes regarding who can legally carry a concealed handgun. You must still be a “qualifying” adult, meaning you are at least 21 years of age, not prohibited from possessing a firearm under state or federal law, not a fugitive from justice, etc. Refer to the concealed carry manual available at the Ohio Attorney General’s website for more complete information:

OhioAttorneyGeneral.gov/ConcealedCarry Does this change how I carry in my vehicle?

No. You will be able to carry a concealed handgun in your car with or without a CHL. You do not have to unload. You do not have to make the handgun visible. You can have loaded handguns and magazines on your person or stored anywhere in your vehicle.

Does this change how I transport long guns in my vehicle?

No. Carrying concealed, with or without a license, deals with a loaded handgun only. Transporting rifles and shotguns remains the same, meaning you must transport them unloaded, in a closed container, with ammunition in a separate container or closed compartment, in your trunk or in an area not accessible without leaving your vehicle.

Can I carry in a bar, courthouse, church, etc.?

Per federal law, you will still need a CHL to carry in a school zone in your vehicle. If you leave your vehicle, your handgun must be secured and locked in your vehicle. Otherwise, nothing changes about where you can or cannot carry a concealed handgun. Areas that are currently no-carry zones will remain no-carry zones. Property owners will still be able to post no-gun signs.

Can I carry without a license in other states?

That depends on the laws of other states. Ohio law applies to Ohio only. When traveling to other states, you will need to abide by the laws of each state you’re in. References include the Traveler’s Guide to the Firearm Laws of the Fifty States, a book we sell at BuckeyeFirearms.org, and HandgunLaw.us, a website that provides information on the carry laws of each state.

Can non-residents carry concealed without a license?

Yes. While the rules for carrying a concealed handgun remain the same with or without a license, there will be no residency requirement when this law goes into effect. Someone who is otherwise a “qualifying” adult may carry with or without a license whether they reside in Ohio or another state.

Can you conceal rifles and shotguns now?

Surprisingly, someone actually did ask this question. We’re not sure exactly how someone would carry concealed rifles and shotguns other than under a long trench coat. However, the answer is no. Ohio’s concealed carry laws apply to handguns only.

What about storing a handgun in your personal vehicle in an employer’s parking lot?

The new law does not change your right to carry to and from work and to store your handgun in your personally-owned car or truck on company property. Your rights remain the same with or without a CHL. If you drive a company-owned vehicle, your employer may have different rules about whether or not you can carry or store a handgun in their vehicle.

TRO SCAVENGER HUNT

The TRO SCAVENGER HUNT is a special, indoor THUNDER RUN through the pages of our very own magazine. Hidden someplace within the depth of these pages is a special TRO PRIZE LOGO – see the sample here. It’s a version of our “wheel logo” with a treasure chest on it. It was inspired by Cole’s favorite TV show – Jake and the Neverland Pirates! When you find it, shoot us an email at BuckeyeThunderRun@ gmail.com with SCAVENGER HUNT in the subject line. Let us know what page and exactly where the logo is in this month’s magazine and we will put you in the drawing for some great TRO prizes – including some great gear and subscriptions to the magazine! How cool is that?! Scavenger Winner: Sherry Gaj
