So how are you going to spend it? Where are you going to head? While there are still countless challenges ahead of us, thankfully many of the issues caused by COVID and complications are hopefully behind us. And for the first time in several years, we have a full summer of rides, rallies, and racing ahead of us. So now it’s upon us to get out and RIDE! I’d really challenge everyone to not only get out and RIDE – but to explore new roads, discover new events, and expand your horizons with new experiences. I say that not only to encourage you to grow as a rider and have more excitement this summer – but also in hopes that we can all support some of the more unique destinations and even aspects of our riding community. It’s upon us to support the rides, events, and even businesses that we want to see survive and endure through these challenging times. There are literally hundreds of motorcycle oriented events within these pages and on our website (ThunderRoadsOhio.com), but you may notice that some of your favorites may be missing. After a few years off, in some cases, and then with all of the new challenges – many event organizers and businesses have simply thrown in the towel. And many more are on the fence, waiting to see how they do this year. So – get out and support the businesses and events that you want to see sticking around in the future! The other question that I’d pose is – how involved are you with the motorcycle community? Many of you are involved in clubs and riding organizations, and many more help out with many of the rides or other events that happen in your communities. However, there are far too many riders that have never actually gotten involved themselves and are simply watching from the sidelines. Sure, it’s always fun to ride on your own and you certainly don’t have join a club. If that’s not your thing – that’s fine. But there are countless other ways that you can get involved and support the local riding community. In addition to the wide range of really great riding organizations, such as ABATE, Rolling Thunder – you might also consider volunteering to help out at your favorite charity ride or event. Almost every organization out there could use some help – and chances are you’ll discover good folks, kindred spirits that might possibly develop into solid friendships or at the very least new riding buddies. Even if you prefer to ride solo on your own bike, you’re missing out if you’re riding alone down the road. A big part of the riding experience and motorcycle community is the brother and sisterhoods that develop. In many cases, lifelong connections can develop from even a few chance encounters on the road – let alone serving together in an charity organization or event. That feeling of Brotherhood out on the road is a special thing that we shouldn’t take for granted, no more than our favorite rides or rallies. We need to make the effort – and get out there and RIDE!

As Told By
THE IRON COWBOY JOIN THE THUNDER ROADS CREW! Lots of opportunities to help out at events, take pictures, serve as a local ROAD REP, or even work from home helping out ONLINE! This is going to be an exciting year as Thunder Roads Ohio and the Iron Cowboy Crew emerge from a few fairly challenging years – just like everyone else.
Thunder Roads Ohio Offers EXPANDED ON-LINE Ride Registration and Ticket Sales Powered by ReasonsToRide.com ReasonsToRide.com (RtR) and Thunder Roads Ohio are now offering the ability to include RIDER REGISTRATION as part of your online event listings and magazine ads. This allows riders to simply and easily sign up for your event without ever leaving the website – and without having to register on-site the day of the event.
However, we are excited about the upcoming year and everything we have going on!
Pre-registration allows you to more accurately plan for your event by having a listing of participants already committed and invested in it. Pre-registration also helps protect your ride from cloudy days that might also have people staying home, but will choose to still come out since they are already pre-paid.
We’ve taken a new approach to events and added over a dozen NEW locations to our calendar – including COUNTY BIKE SHOWS, MORE TATTOO EVENTS, and MORE BIKE NIGHT and RIDE APPEARANCES than ever before! The TRO CHAMPIONSHIP BIKE SHOW SERIES will be bigger than ever with projected attendance at these events totaling well over 500,000!
RtR is also able to offer RIDE SHIRTS and PATCHES as part of the process as well. Shirts are a great way to promote your event and offer more value to those participating. With advance sales and riders indicating what size shirts they need – you’ll also avoid having to invest in unwanted shirts. You’ll have exactly what you need.
By joining with new partners – we’re also hitting the road to more events out of state, including DAYTONA BIKE WEEK, STURGIS, LONE STAR, and major events throughout the MIDWEST! Online we’ve partnered with ReasonsToRide.com to offer the MOST POWERFUL motorcycle resource on the internet! Through ReasonsToRide.com and now ThunderRoadsOhio.com as well – we can now offer interactive event listings that allow you to view the actual location, map to an event, and even register for the ride or get concert tickets right on our website! And it’s a proven system that processed more than $5 MILLION in ticket sales just last year!
RtR can also help develop graphics and promotional materials – including posters and cards to professionally represent your ride. This helps with sponsorships and encourages ride participation.
PRO TIP: You can add QR codes to your posters and event ads that take riders directly to YOUR unique registration page through Thunder Roads – even on the day of the event!
It's all REALLY EXCITING STUFF – and it means we are growing, with new needs for folks all across Ohio and even out of state! With our expanded online aspects, there is a lot that you can even do from home! It’s pretty cool and the potential is almost limitless. For Riding Organizations – we have great opportunities to partner with Thunder Roads Ohio in your area. We need with events and getting the word out – in exchange we help promote your group’s events as well. There are also opportunities for groups to raise funds for your organization or designated charities by partnering with TRO and covering the local riding community. In most cases, you don’t really need experience and we aren’t looking for professional sales people. That’s really not what we do. We are looking for RIDERS that can help represent TRO and IRON COWBOY at events and rides all across Ohio – and looking ahead, across the Midwest and at some of the largest motorcycle events in the country. It’s going to be a GREAT YEAR – join the team and LET’S RIDE! To find out more, send an email to ThunderRoadsOhio@gmail.com

You can also create signs with these QR codes to display on-site the day of the event. For Iron Pony’s RIDE FOR THE RHINOS – event organizers were able to use display stands with the QR codes and easy instructions for riders to register online even on the morning of the ride. This expedited the process incredibly and allowed well over 1,000 participants to easily check-in with half as many volunteers involved.

The new exhibit opened this past Spring, and comes on the heels of the recent A Century of the American Motorcycle exhibit which featured bikes from the Barber Vintage Motorcycle Museum. Both exhibits were made possible by presenting sponsorships from Dan T. Moore and Progressive Insurance, the #1 motorcycle insurer in the country. Open Road features motorcycles from around the world, with three dozen bikes built by manufacturers from the U.S., Europe, Great Britain, Japan and Argentina. “All of the bikes in the Open Road exhibit were sourced from local, private collections, and this is the first time the bikes will be displayed together,” said John Lutsch, curator of the Open Road exhibit. “Some of the bikes are very rare, with histories involving round-the-world adventure or wheel-to-wheel competition. We think the diversity of these unique machines will be intriguing for motorcycle riders and non-riders. This exhibit also helps reinforce the lure of motorcycling in the Buckeye state, where we are ranked fourth in the U.S. in the number of registered riders.” DON’T MISS: The 1918 Cleveland Lightweight The Cleveland Motorcycle Manufacturing Company produced high quality, cutting edge two-stroke single cylinder motorcycles that were used extensively by the US Army during World War I in a courier capacity. The bikes had a unique design using a worm drive and had a solid 269cc displacement. The Crawford Auto-Aviation Museum at the Cleveland History Center is located in Cleveland’s University Circle. It is open Thursdays from noon to 8:00 pm and Friday-Sunday from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Advance tickets are recommended but not required, and are available at cletix.com. WRHS monitors daily guidance from the City of Cleveland, State of Ohio, and CDC. Please note that Visitor Guidelines, public hours, and museum operations are subject to change. Updates are available at www.wrhs.org and @clestartshere. TRO TIP: Make it BIKE NIGHT @ THE CRAWFORD The Crawford is open Thursday nights until 8pm, making it a nice early evening ride stop for those in Northeast Ohio. There is convenient parking in the Museum lot on the north side of the museum off Magnolia Drive. Bring your parking ticket in to get it validated. After the Museum, there are plenty of great restaurants around the corner by Case Western on Euclid Avenue and heading up towards the Coventry area of Cleveland Heights.
The Crawford Auto Aviation Museum is located at the Cleveland History Center and is part of the Western Reserve Historical Society. The Crawford—originally known as the Thompson Products Auto Album—was founded by Thompson Products (now TRW) president Frederick C. Crawford and opened on August 13, 1943, as one of the first car museums in the U.S. In 1945, Ruth Franklin was named curator and became one of the first female museum curators in the U.S. Franklin held that position for 26 years and was the first woman named to the Board of Trustees for the Antique Automobile Club of America. Mr. Crawford’s collection became part of the Western Reserve Historical Society in 1963, and on September 11, 1965, opened its doors as the Frederick C. Crawford Auto-Aviation Museum in a new building at its current location at 10825 East Boulevard in Cleveland, Ohio.

MOTORCYCLE MINISTRIES Expecting the unexpected. That’s pretty much how we ride isn’t it? You never know what’s in the curve up ahead or what’s just at the tip of the light beam at night. Sometimes it’s that thrill of the unknown that keeps the adrenalin pumping through our veins and pushes us to get on that bike just one more time! I think the Rider’s course called it Murphy’s Law, just when you think it isn’t going to happen, it will! That’s just life in general! Had a friend contact me for prayer on their way to an off-road event because they blew a tire on their toy hauler, sheered the valve stem on the tire beside it and by chance rolled right into a garage that may have just what they need. The unexpected. You cannot prepare for it. Yes, there was a spare tire on the camper, but not a valve stem. So, what do you do when the unexpected happens? Certainly, you can scream and carry on like a crazy person, draw up into a fetal position and melt into the wall, call all of your friends and cry ‘Why me? Why me?’ There are so many ways to react when the unexpected comes our way! Like my friends for example. They didn’t freak out, they assessed the situation, changed the tire that went flat, and then called on a friend to pray for a good outcome, and that is what they got! They limped to the next exit and pulled into a church parking lot right off the exit, looked across the road and there was a tire warehouse right in front of them! You see, there is always a path to follow in the time of the unexpected and there is not anything that surprises God. He is always prepared and has many times tried to put delays in our path, tried to remind us to check things out, like get new tires on the camper. Have you ever wondered why you had a little bit of a nudge in your gut about something or just didn’t feel right about going somewhere and decided to stay home, only to find out there was a serious accident on the same route you were going to be on? God’s protection. It’s why we do bike blessings. It’s actually for your protection so you can be seen while you ride your machine. Believe me…you are surrounded by an army of angels; however, you still need to use wisdom. The unexpected is determined by cell phone users and all other kinds of distracted drivers and obstacles out there. It’s also determined by our clear heads, so be kind to yourself and pay attention, enjoy the beauty of the ride and the privilege to be on the machine. God is going to see us through the unexpected, He’s not intending for us to suffer needlessly, He knows it’s part of the life we live here, but that wasn’t His first choice. You also have to remember that the unexpected isn’t always a negative thing either. In my story about the tire, the unexpected flat was bad, but the unexpected warehouse was a blessing! There is an old saying that every cloud has a silver lining if you look for it.
The key is looking for it. The first thing most people do in any bad situation is to ask why did God let this happen? But did you ever hear anyone ask in a good situation why did God let this happen? I will let that sink in a second…. Of course not. It is not God’s desire for us to live a life of constant struggles, but trust this, when we have the surprises arise, He will be there to answer the call and bring about a positive solution and a good outcome to all. Even in the most tragic of circumstances. Ride Safe, Be Blessed and Pay Attention! Mary G

TRO & ReasonsToRide.com JOIN THE MACHINE GUN PREACHER Thunder Roads Ohio launches campaign to support Sam Childers and his missions. On Sunday, August 25th; Thunder Roads Ohio announced our intention to help support Sam Childers – The Machine Gun Preacher – and his missions around the world. As part of an event with Armored Disciples Motorcycle Ministry and other riding ministries in the Cleveland area, we welcomed Sam to Cleveland for an afternoon at Rocky River Baptist Church. While there, the Machine Gun Preacher shared his own personal experiences and looked beyond his own missions in life to challenge us all to make a difference. If you’re not familiar with Sam Childers and the work he’s done – it’s a story that you need to hear. In the simplest of terms, he is a biker from Pennsylvania that traveled to Africa back in 1998 and witnessed atrocities that ended turning his world upside down. He has since literally saved the lives of THOUSANDS of children that in many cases had been simply left to die. That’s not dramatics or an overstatement. These were orphans that had lost their parents to the violence that has ravaged Sudan, Uganda, and the region for more than 50 years. In this part of Africa, there were no governmental social services for children. And the violence and horrors were
simply so overwhelming that many traditional missionary and aid organizations simply withdrew from the region. It was a situation so bad that news organizations and even the worlds governments simply looked the otherway. But along comes Sam Childers, a BIKER from Pennsylvania, and he took it upon himself to make a difference. One man on a mission to save the lives of children. Instead of being overwhelmed by the challenge – he SIMPLY DID IT. He did what nobody else seemed capable of doing – and he’s been saving the lives of children ever since. For more on Sam Childers and his organization – Angels of East Africa, google them online or visit their Facebook page (www. Facebook.com/MGP) @MachineGunPreacher. You can also visit our websites and follow our social media pages for updates on his work and how YOU can help. Back when we started Thunder Roads Ohio in 2011, we first crossed paths with Sam and learned of his work. I was already aware of the atrocities in Sudan after meeting a war refugee from the region while I was in school years before – so I felt a calling to help however I could. We supported a few appearances and helped share his story. But as happens in life, we became distracted with the realities of our own lives and we lost touch. Then it just “so happened” that Sam would be in Florida this past Spring while we were in Daytona for Bike Week. And then “coincidentally” it turned out that Sam would be in Ohio this Spring for a Bike Blessing with the Kingdom Knights Motorcycle Ministry in Akron. 14 14

I had the opportunity to catch up with Sam and do an interview – which you can find on our facebook page and website. In doing so, we had a simple question – “What’s going on with the Machine Gun Preacher – ten years later, what’s happened with your mission?” To which his reply was even simpler – “I never stopped.” We will share more of his story and work over the coming months and you can find more online, but the simple truth of his life and all that he’s accomplished was exactly what we needed to hear after all we’ve been through over the past year. It was the inspiration for a new charitable initiative and focus for our organization – Mission 2022.
MISSION 2022: And the Machine Gun Preacher Bike Mission 2022 for us is all about launching a new initiative that is focused purely on making a difference. It’s not about politics, race, past history, or any other drama or excuses that might overwhelm or distract us. This isn’t JUST about saving the LIVES of children in Africa – it’s about waking us up and inspiring us to make more of our own lives. Sure there’s A LOT of craziness going on in the world – but we CAN NO LONGER simply leave it to others to fix. We all can’t travel to Africa, nor should we. We have plenty that we can do in our own corner of the world – or even just here in the United States. But in supporting SAM’S WORK – we can help energize change in our own communities.
Our belief is that MISSION WORK and helping others is inspiring and can fuel change in our own lives. We’ve partnered with Sam’s organization – Angels of East Africa, LLC (a 501c3 organization) and Western Reserve Charities, Inc, to launch a campaign to not only support their work in Africa and organizations working to make a difference in our own communities right here in Ohio and the US.
We can NO LONGER simply wait for others to fix our communities and consequently our NATION as a whole. We need to step up ourselves. You can find out more and get your tickets online at ThunderRoadsOhio.com.
A central piece of this effort is a campaign to raffle off Sam’s own personal bike – a Harley-Davidson Street Glide that he had customized in his Pennsylvania shop. It’s one of the original MACHINE GUN PREACHER motorcycles and really a cool bike with a unique look and history.
Thanks to David Eggert, NEO Pro Imaging, for photos.
We are now helping to collect donations which give you the chance to win this motorcycle – while helping to both support the work of SAM and his organization AND local charities right here in Ohio. Over the next several months we are going to share more and more about both Sam Childers and his work – as well as local individuals and organizations that are working in our own communities. Through the Bike Raffle and other initiatives you can help support these efforts and be a part of the change we need.

Military Spouse and Family Educational Assistance Programs Post-9/11 veterans, eligible surviving spouses and children attending school may receive full tuition coverage at state-operated colleges and universities, plus a monthly living stipend and book allowance under this program.
There are several education benefits available to dependents of active duty members and veterans as well as surviving family members of deceased veterans. Ranging from scholarships to totally free school, these benefits are often overlooked. Department of Defense Post 9/11 GI Bill Transferability There is a special provision of the program that allows military members to share their remaining GI Bill (education) benefits with immediate family members. The key factor is whether or not the member has used any of their GI Bill in the past; only unused benefits can be transferred. This means that if they used 12 months of their GI Bill, then they can only transfer the remaining 24 months of benefits. Service members must meet specific criteria to be eligible to transfer their GI Bill benefits. This includes having at least six years of service and an obligation to serve at least four more. Military Spouse Career Advancement Accounts (MyCAA) The Military Spouse Career Advancement Accounts (MyCAA) program provides up to $4,000 of Financial Assistance for military spouses who are pursuing degree programs, licenses or credentials leading to employment in portable career fields. Spouses can contact MilitaryOneSource for education counseling and help to find alternative funding sources. Call toll free at: 800.342.9647. Veterans Affairs Dependents Education Assistance Program The Dependents' Educational Assistance (DEA) program provides education and training opportunities to eligible dependents of certain veterans. The program offers up to 36 months of education benefits. These benefits may be used for degree and certificate programs, apprenticeship and on-the-job training. Remedial, deficiency and refresher courses may be approved under certain circumstances. Marine GySgt John D. Fry Scholarship Program The Fry Scholarship is a program similar to the Post-9/11 GI Bill that makes education benefits available to the surviving spouses and children of service members who die in the line of duty after Sept. 10, 2001. Like
Surviving spouses can use the Fry Scholarship for 15 years from the anniversary of the service member's death or until they remarry. Eligible children can use the Fry Scholarship between the ages of 18 and 33. Children under age 18 cannot use this benefit even if they have completed high school. The child's marital status does not affect eligibility for the Fry Scholarship. Scholarships and Grants While looking for money for school many spouses and their families overlook the over $300 million of military - and veteran - related scholarships and grants. These scholarships often go unclaimed. Not applying for scholarships is like turning down free money. Fastweb.com is a free scholarship search platform that connects students to scholarships and financial aid tools – and it has tools and sections specific to veterans and their families. Army Resources Army Emergency Relief (AER) Army Emergency Relief maintains two scholarship programs – the Spouse Education Assistance Program and the MG James Ursano Scholarship Program for dependent children. Both scholarships provide financial assistance for students who are pursuing their first undergraduate degree. Visit the Army Emergency Relief site for more details. TRO CHAMPIONSHIP BIKE SHOW SERIES ALL ARE WELCOME! We’ve always believed that the best thing about our bike show series is the people that both exhibit and attend. This isn’t just about the bikes – but about the people building and riding them as well. After doing these shows for more than 10 years, its great seeing how many connections and friendships that have developed over the years between folks coming to the shows. There’s a common bond that exists between riders – and there’s even more of a connection between the folks that take the time to restore, customize, or even create their own bikes. People start talking about what they’ve built, what they have at home, and what they rode up to the show.
JUNE 2022 UP DATE!
It's important to recognize that these are INFORMAL, RIDE-IN SHOWS! While we do use Judges at most shows, the majority of the votes come from the crowd. These are fun shows with the emphasis on camaraderie more than competition. If you’ve ever stormed out of a show after not winning the big trophy – these shows aren’t for you. If you’ve got a bike you’re proud of – we’d like to invite you to join in and put her in the show. Even if you’ve never shown her before – that’s ok. We’re all family here. Make sure that you check out our events listing on Facebook and follow the ones that are of interest to you. We will be posting updates and more details about the shows and new programs as things are finalized. www.Facebook.com/ThunderRoadsOhio
WILD TURKEY FESTIVAL
Thunder Roads Ohio kicked off the 2022 ReasonsToRide.com Bike Show Series with the Wild Turkey Festival Bike Show in McArthur, Ohio. It was the 37th year for this festival in the rolling hills of southern Ohio, but it was the first year for the Bike Show. Festival organizers and the whole community really welcomed the show, but many weren’t really sure what to expect. Working together with local businesses, an area – henceforth known as THUNDER ALLEY – was carved out for the Bike Show and accompanying encampment. When the day of the show finally arrived, the clouds parted and everyone enjoyed a clear day – despite the challenging forecast. Bikes came from throughout Ohio and even surrounding states, and for many it was their first time showing. One avid rider from Chicago was in the area for a Rally, but brought his custom 450 Rebel by to exhibit when he heard of the show. It wasn’t a huge show for the first year, but the area filled with an amazing array of unique bikes. There was a row of immaculately restored bikes from the 50’s including a pristine Harley, a Velocette from England, and a French bike that nobody was really sure how to pronounce (Monet Goyon). Best in Show went to an incredible chopper that looked like a piece of art and the People’s Choice Award went to a service tribute bike that moved everyone that came by it. (Visit our Facebook page or the photo galleries at ThunderRoadsOhio.com for more photos of the bikes and the event itself.) Everyone seemed to have a great time as exhibitors spent the day sharing the stories behind the bikes with each other and then seemingly the entire community as everyone came by to admire them. After the show, the TRO Crew and Bike Show 20

VINTAGE & VETERANS DISPLAYS This year we are teaming up with a number of Ohio county fairs to help incorporate motorcycles into more of their programming. This will include several new BIKE SHOWS as part of county fairs across the state. We are excited at the opportunities this will allow as we showcase unique and classic motorcycles in front of thousands attending county fairs – that in some cases have been going on for more than 150 years! For several of the counties, we will be hosting VINTAGE & VETERANS motorcycle exhibits. In most cases these will be held in either indoor or covered areas and run the duration of the fair. We are inviting anyone with a motorcycle 25 years or older, a military model, or any make or model with a military / patriotic theme to participate. Selected bikes will be sponsored by Thunder Roads Ohio, showcased as part of the exhibit, and then featured as part of the feature bike show on the designated day. Selected exhibitors will receive a wristband / pass for the duration of the fair and a special VINTAGE & VETERAN’S EXHIBITOR bike show shirt at no cost to them. There will be a limited number of spots available for these displays, so we encourage anyone interested in participating to please submit a photo of their bike and information on it to BikeShowInfo@gmail. com. If you are interested in participating in a particular show – or open to dates throughout the series, please indicate that. There is NO COST to exhibitors for participating in these displays.
Thunder Zone Vendor Areas For the larger weekend shows, we will be adding THUNDER ZONE Vendor areas to our layout. These vendor areas will offer a tremendous opportunity to reach not only thousands of riders – but far more, as many of the events embrace the entire community, drawing attendees from throughout their regions. For more information on vending at these events and to be put on a list for updates, email BikeShowInfo@gmail.com

THE LIMA HALF MILE The THUNDER returns to the Allen County Fairgrounds
Much has changed over 100 years, but the sport remains perhaps motorsport’s purest test of man and machine.
America’s oldest and purest form of motorcycle racing returns to Lima OH for the AMERICAN FLAT TRACK LIMA HALF MILE June 25 at the Allen County Fairgrounds. If you’ve never been to a flat track race, let alone a professional AFT race – this is an opportunity that you don’t want to miss. The nation’s best riders will take to the track and spray dirt in the stands as they compete for glory in one of motorsports greatest competitions. Progressive AFT 101 – courtesy AFT Progressive American Flat Track is America’s original extreme sport as well as the guardian of the Grand National Championship series, formally established in 1954 but with roots reaching back to motorcycling’s original speed demons of a century ago. At its core, professional flat track racing is a hyper-competitive, adrenaline-fueled American motorcycle sport featuring custombuilt and production-based motorcycles reaching top speeds of 140mph on the straights and 90mph in the corners, all piloted by world-class athletes. Progressive AFT is widely recognized as the most prestigious and competitive form of dirt track motorcycle racing in the world.

THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE
Over the decades, many of the world’s best motorcycle racers have emerged from America’s dirt track venues – legends like original Indian Wrecking Crew members Bill Tuman, Bobby Hill and Ernie Beckman during the 1950s, Gary Nixon and Dick Mann in the 1960s, Kenny Roberts, Eddie Lawson, and Wayne Rainey during the ’70s and ’80s, and Nicky Hayden in the ’90s and 2000s. All were superb flat track racers – several of them Grand National Champions – and many used the skills they first developed on the dirt to revolutionize Grand Prix Motorcycle racing and attain global superstardom. Today’s series is comprised of three classes – Mission® SuperTwins presented by S&S Cycle, Parts Unlimited AFT Singles presented by KICKER, and Mission Production Twins presented by Vance & Hines – with riders competing in 18 races across the country featuring four distinct track formats: Mile ovals, Half-Mile ovals, Short Track ovals and TTs, which incorporate right-hand turns and a jump.
THUNDERROADSOHIO.COM
OHIO’S MOTORCYCLE MAGAZINE
The reclassification of the new series is categorized in an easily comprehensible format: The revamped Mission® SuperTwins presented by S&S Cycle class consists of twin-cylinder motorcycles (649 900cc), utilizing the latest in motorsport technology and piloted by an exclusive company of the fastest athletes on dirt. The Mission Production Twins presented by Vance & Hines class features production-based, twin-cylinder street bike engines with displacements between 649cc and 900cc. Race-only engines from machines such as the Harley-Davidson XR750, Honda RS750, and Indian Scout FTR750 are not eligible in AFT Production Twins. The Parts Unlimited AFT Singles presented by KICKER class consists of production-based 450cc off-road machines specially prepared for flat track competition. Professional flat track racing is currently experiencing a significant rebirth, much of which can be credited to changes instituted in 2017: a name change, a simpler class structure, and significantly boosted media presence that helped attract millions of new viewers.

Finding Good Local People to Ride With
Every rider has their own list of riding preferences- slow to fast pace, straight or twisty roads, cruising gathering places or seeking quiet country roads, dirt - gravel or smooth paved. The list could go on forever, but one thing is certain- the greater the difference in preferences, the less likely two riders will enjoy riding together.
Social media is mostly online people you never get to meet in person, but sheer number of people on platforms like Facebook is in your favor. Search for groups that interest you. I am a member of several Ohio-centric adventure riding groups, a Yamaha FJR group, a Suzuki V Strom group, national and regional MSTA groups, etc. Participate in discussions and help people when you can. After a while people know you. I like to post invitations to ride when good weather is coming up, I post a weather forecast for attention and ask who wants to ride. 2206-04.jpg In the past year I met two V Strom riders who have become good friends and riding buddies, as well as several others.
I joined Motorcycle Sport Touring Association in 2001 because its members rode in the style that most appeals to me. When I go to a MSTA regional rally or local gathering, there are always plenty of like-minded people to ride with, as they are concentrated there.
At home, it can be more difficult to find local riders to connect with, as the more specific your preferences, the harder it is to find others who share them. A good place to start is by connecting with members in local motorcycle clubs. Some of them may share your preferred riding style, but even if they don't, they might know someone who does. Bike nights sound like an obvious place to connect but the nearest ones that attract sport touring and adv riders are in Cincinnati- a bit far away for me in Dayton, Ohio. 32 32
THUNDER ROADS® ROADS® OHIO OHIO MAGAZINE MAGAZINE THUNDER
Even though we all want people to ride with, we never think about how to BE someone others will want to ride with. Most of us want to meet up with someone who matches our style, knows some great roads and is willing to lead rides. If you can become that person, it will be a lot easier for you to find people to ride with. A few months ago I wrote in this column about finding fun, twisty roads to ride that are nearby. I also built a web page with some of my favorite routes in southwest Ohio and Southeast Indiana. 2206-05.jpg When meeting someone new, I invite them to go

Two more routes have been added to Norm's Favorite Rides web page. 06 Indiana Gravel North 264 miles Starts on Austin road just West of exit 41 of I-75. Goes around the South side of Miamisburg and Germantown, through Camden to Liberty, Indiana. The route then goes West, following a network of farm roads with mixed gravel and pavement, bounded by state route 44 on the South and US 40 on the North.
to my page and choose a route that appeals to them. They don't have to create a route or lead, but they get to choose some things they prefer- shorter or longer, smoother or rougher, all pavement or pavement and gravel mix. By looking at the page they learn about what I like. Likewise, their choice tells me a bit about what they like. There are regular friends I ride with who are very comfortable and in tune with each other. They expect to ride a brisk pace on challenging roads. Bringing a new person of unknown skill into the regular group is risky for safety and will be stressful for the new person if the pace is too fast. Just slow down? If the new person is slow, needs to stop a lot, etc, it can spoil the day for regulars who are not getting the ride they expected. That's doubly stressful for me, as I'm trying to please two groups who want different things.
07 Indiana Gravel South 228 miles Ride to Indiana similar to the North Route above.. The route then goes South and West, crossing a bridge over Brookville lake, following a network of farm roads with mixed gravel and pavement, bounded by county road 260 on the North and US 52 on the South. Although shorter than the North route, the South route has more elevation changes and much of it is twisty. After lunch and gas in Brookville, there are some fun paved roads along the return route back to the start on Austin Road. If you want to practice riding gravel roads, both are good routesnothing difficult. Any road bike will work, but it's more fun on a BMW GS, KTM Adventure or Suzuki V Strom of any size. Check out Norms Rides at https://norms-rides.flybyweek.com/
A better idea: When riding with a new person, do it one-on-one. I'm free to adapt the ride for them without worrying about anyone else. If we are a good match, they can ride with the regulars next time. Even if we turn out not to be compatible, I gain perspective. It's all good! -------------------------------------------------------------------Connect with local Ohio Motorcycle Sport Touring Association riders at these monthly breakfasts: Southwest Ohio Breakfast, 9AM, June 18 Village Family Restaurant 144 S. Main St. Waynesville, OH 45068 Central Ohio Breakfast Meet - Sunday July 3. Arrive at 8 am to eat, 9 to ride if weather permits. Portside Cafe 6515 S High St Lockbourne, OH 43137

FUNNY STUFF BECAUSE EVERYONE NEEDS A GOOD LAUGH NOW AND THEN...
An angry wife was complaining about her husband spending all his free time in a bar, so one night he took her along with him. "What'll you have?" he asked. "Oh, I don't know. The same as you I suppose," she replied. So, the husband ordered a couple of Jack Daniel's and threw his down in one shot. His wife watched him, then took a sip from her glass and immediately spat it out. "Yuck, that's TERRIBLE!" she spluttered. "I don't know how you can drink this stuff!" "Well, there you go," cried the husband. "And you think I'm out enjoying myself every night!" A woman is in an accident while she's pregnant. While in a comma she has twins (a boy & a girl). When she woke up she asked the doctor were her baby was. The doctor said she had twins but her brother named them. She replied,"My brother is an idiot I wonder what names he gave them. Anyway what did he name the girl?" "Denise", replied the doctor. That's not so bad."What about the boy", she finally asked. "Denephew" A small boy was lost at the beach, so he went up to a lifeguard and said, "I've lost my dad!" The lifeguard said, "What's he like?" The little boy replied, "Beer and women!"

A farmer and his brand new bride were riding home from the chapel in a wagon pulled by a team of horses, when the older horse stumbled. The farmer said, "That's once." A little further along, the poor old horse stumbled again. The farmer said, "That's twice." After a little, while the poor old horse stumbled again. The farmer didn't say anything, but reached under the seat, pulled out a shotgun and shot the horse. His brand new bride raised all kind of hell with him, telling him, "That was an awful thing to do." The farmer said, "That's once." A new dentist set up in a small town and quickly acquired a reputation of being the latest kind of "Painless" dentist. But a local chap quicky disputed this. "He's a fake ! " he told his mates. "He's not painless at all. When he stuck his finger in my mouth I bit him - and he yelled like anyone else. Investment Advice If you had bought $1000.00 worth of Nortel stock one year ago, it would now be worth $16.00. With Enron, you would have $12.50 of the original $1,000.00 invested a year before bankruptcy.. With WorldCom, you would have less than $4.00 left. If you invested $1000.00 with Bernie Madoff you would have $0 If you had bought $1,000.00 worth of Budweiser (the beer, not the stock) one year ago, drank all the beer, then turned in the cans for the 10 cent deposit, you would have $215.00. Based on the above, my current investment advice is to drink heavily and recycle

Smartie "If there are any idiots in the room, will they please stand up" said the sarcastic teacher. After a long silence, one student rose to her feet. "Now then young lady, why do you consider yourself an idiot?" inquired the teacher with a sneer. "Well, actually I don't," said the student, "but I hate to see you standing up there all by yourself." A guy walks into a bar, orders 12 shots and starts drinking them as fast as he can. The bartender asks, "Dang, why are you drinking so fast?" The guy says, "You would be drinking fast, too, if you had what I had." The bartender asks, "What do you have?" The guy says, "75 cents."

OHIO’S MOTORCYCLE MAG! TRO SCAVENGER HUNT
The TRO SCAVENGER HUNT is a special, indoor THUNDER RUN through the pages of our very own magazine. Hidden someplace within the depth of these pages is a special TRO PRIZE LOGO – see the sample here. It’s a version of our “wheel logo” with a treasure chest on it. It was inspired by Cole’s favorite TV show – Jake and the Neverland Pirates! When you find it, shoot us an email at BuckeyeThunderRun@ gmail.com with SCAVENGER HUNT in the subject line. Let us know what page and exactly where the logo is in this month’s magazine and we will put you in the drawing for some great TRO prizes – including some great gear and subscriptions to the magazine! How cool is that?!
