And by participating in various rides and events in our pages, you can help out those in need and truly make a difference. You can support the efforts and causes that you believe in with the roar of your bike – helping a family struggling with cANCER (Akron Bikers for Boobs) or even saving the lives of children on the other side of the world (Angels of East Africa / Machine Gun Preacher).

FROM THE PUBLISHER

The reality of our new world dictates that we focus more and more on our digital aspects – including our website, social media, and Newsletters; but we will always print the magazines and attend events to hand them out. We will place our magazines directly into the hands of riders, because that’s what we do. We celebrate the riding community and our magazines represent the events and people that make it up.

Fall weather brings out some of the most scenic landscapes – with the changing colors that our Midwest tapestry is known for. The lower temps also make it more comfortable to wear a bit more gear, especially the items that we all know we really need. It’s a lot more practical to dress appropriately at 60 – then it is at 90. With less events seemingly every day, the schedule lessens and we can focus on the fewer, larger events than running around as much. Less stress, beautiful scenery, and more comfortable riding - it truly is my favorite time to ride here in the Midwest. This issue is themed around Thunder on the Strip – the annual rally in Genevaon-the-Lake, an event that we have been a part of for 15 years. While preparing for the feature article and getting materials together for us and local media, we went back through a lot of photos and spent time reminiscing about so many great times and lots of amazing friends we’ve made over the years.

One of my all time favorite folks that I’ve met doing this is “Josie” from Canada. We met Josie when she came by our booth with her “boy toy” in tow. She had a really cool look with more than a few tat’s and she rode a really cool bike. And then we discovered that she had the personality and attitude to more than back up the edgy look she carried. And I’m not talking about the “I’m a bad a$@# look” that so many think is an essential part of being a biker. I’m talking about an appreciation for life and living it to the fullest. Walking into a room (or bar) and not knowing a soul there – but then leaving a few hours later with the room roaring and everyone now a brother or sister.

As we look back on over 12 years of doing the magazine and contemplate the future before us, I’m really proud of the work we’ve done and all we’ve accomplished. I say WE – as in you and I, the team here, and the folks working the events found in these pages. We truly are a community and we accomplish so much all working together.

In many ways, the mags represent an invitation for folks to come out and be a part of another world.

You can be whoever you (or they) need to be in your 9 to 5; but when you jump on your bike and ride out to the local bike night, bike show, charity ride, or to join us in Geneva – you can be who you WANT. You can explore new roads, meet new people, and feel a freedom that eludes most while working the routine.

Thank you for allowing us to be a part of it all.

That’s really my favorite thing about living the life we do, as members of the riding community. We all come together, from different backgrounds and even countries – but that appreciation for life and sense of Brotherhood unites us all. Sometimes we need a spark – such as Josie – or even just a magazine to bring us together.

Over the next several months, we will be setting up at and helping to host a number of fairly large motorcycle events including Thunder Zones as part of the Easyriders Rodeos and in Geneva-on-the-Lake during Thunder on the Strip. In between, we will be out at rides, bike nights, and other local events.

As Told By THE IRON COWBOY Bike of the Nights!

And all of these are great opportunities for local riding organizations to connect with riders…

Many riding organizations just think about setting up to sell t-shirts or to promote an upcoming ride, if that. Far too few consider setting up just as an opportunity to introduce themselves to other riders and the riding community in general. A booth with a banner in back and maybe a table with some swag or flyers about an upcoming event – allow you to connect with folks and deliver a strong message about who you are.

CONNECTING WITH RIDERS

While it seems as though summer has just begun, it’s still time to start thinking about the Fall and maybe even next year as we start planning for Bike Shows, Tattoo Parties, Rides, and Rallies. One of our clear mandates going forward is to NOT spread ourselves too thin as much as we may have in the past. So, that means we will be limiting ourselves to less shows and appearances – even as we open up new territories and begin setting up at new venues. So – if you’re interested in getting on the Tour Schedule for this FALL or even NEXT YEAR – let us know ASAP. Even if you have a traditional, regular date – PLEASE take a minute and confirm your date for next year. If you’re considering adding a TOUR STOP – with one of our signature promotions such as the Bike Show, Iron & Ink Tattoo Party, or even just a photo shoot or Bike Night Appearance – let us know right away so we can begin discussions. Don’t wait until the last moment! Email us at BikeShowInfo@gmail.com for more information or to lock-in your date(s).

At the upcoming events, we would like to invite local riding organizations out to join us as we set up. This includes motorcycle ministries, veterans organizations, RC’s, and even MC’s. For some of the larger events, where there are thousands of riders, there might be a small charge by the venue for setting up a booth. In most cases it’s just $50-100 to set up. If you can sell a stack of shirts or sign up 20-30 more riders for your upcoming ride – that’s money well spent. Or if you connect with a few strong candidates or have a chance to let the community really know who you are – it’s money well spent.

It was a wild and crazy ride… The end of July, heading into August and what else have we got to do but hop on the bike along with 17 other ladies and trek down through the mountains of West Virginia? Yeehaw! Yes, I know this is the September article, but I must tell you about the adventures of the summer!! Holy smack down guys and girls! We had us a fantastic road trip and believe it or not…18 women did it with no whining!! (Well…I didn’t hear any because I have loud pipes and I was up front ) But, seriously, only a few of us had ridden together before so this was going to be a real test for everyone!

My point is this…we all need each other. We learned that perfect strangers could go on a road trip of over 900 miles, live in a house together for a weekend and by fully relying on God as our keeper and guide, we can make it through a rainstorm, find our way when lost, make it down a mountainside in total darkness on a narrow road and come out smiling and laughing at the end of the day. We also got the privilege of blessing a few bikers while out there looking at the sites!

COME RIDE WITH US! CMA is a servant minded interdenominational motorcycle ministry with a nondenominational message of hope and love through Jesus Christ. TRO welcomes the opportunity to work with established motorcycle ministries. Feel free to share upcoming events with us as well, by emailing information to Events.ThunderRoads@gmail.com

So, what’s your next adventure going to be? I can tell you that ours will be wherever God leads and if our paths cross, you are sure to know it’s me as you hear ‘Yeehawwww’ over my pipes as we roll in the wind…

The start off was awesome…we left on a beautiful July morning, the sun shining with temperatures in the low 70’s only to climb into the low 80’s. As we left Ohio singing ‘Country roads take me home…’ all smiles, we were doing great and then we stopped for lunch. Just before we stopped, I heard the Lord say, “At this lunch stop, put on your rain gear.” I acknowledged Him and after lunch, I said, “I am going to put on my rain gear.” Everyone looked at me like I would jinx them or something like that and so…I didn’t. Guess what…not 5 minutes after we pulled out it started raining! OF COURSE, IT DID!!! (Yes, I learned a lesson there). So, we stopped and put our rain gear on and for the next 69 miles it rained….no, no, it didn’t just rain…it POURED!! We stopped a few times during the rain and at one point we got separated. There were 12 riders, 9 motorcycles, 3 trikes, a truck, and a car. The 3 trikes, truck and car got separated from the 9 motorcycles by traffic and didn’t see us exit. But God is so good, and He directed their path a different route, kept us on the same route and we arrived at the house at the exact same time that evening!! Not only that, but all of us saw this beautiful rainbow as we finished out the last few miles of the trip which gave us all this grand sense of relief and hope that He had always been with us and would continue with us the rest of the way. (Heb 13:5 says ‘He will never leave nor forsake you’) We rode through mountains we hadn’t seen, whipped through the winding curves of West Virginia (fun, fun, fun!), each of us met a new friend, a new Sister. Each of us climbed mountains we had never climbed before and took challenging curves we had never taken before. Sister encouraged Sister, there were no jealousies, no back bites, no …. Well, there was the shark in the cook pot but that’s another story for another time.

MOTORCYCLE MINISTRIES

Mary G.

I had the opportunity to catch up with Sam and do an interview – which you can find on our facebook page and website. In doing so, we had a simple question – “What’s going on with the Machine Gun Preacher – ten years later, what’s happened with your mission?”

“so happened” that Sam would be in Florida this past Spring while we were in Daytona for Bike Week. And then “coincidentally” it turned out that Sam would be in Ohio this Spring for a Bike Blessing with the Kingdom Knights Motorcycle Ministry in Akron.

On Sunday, August 25th; Thunder Roads Ohio announced our intention to help support Sam Childers – The Machine Gun Preacher – and his missions around the world. As part of an event with Armored Disciples Motorcycle Ministry and other riding ministries in the Cleveland area, we welcomed Sam to Cleveland for an afternoon at Rocky River Baptist Church. While there, the Machine Gun Preacher shared his own personal experiences and looked beyond his own missions in life to challenge us all to make a difference. If you’re not familiar with Sam Childers and the work he’s done – it’s a story that you need to hear. In the simplest of terms, he is a biker from Pennsylvania that traveled to Africa back in 1998 and witnessed atrocities that ended turning his world upside down. He has since literally saved the lives of THOUSANDS of children that in many cases had been simply left to die. That’s not dramatics or an overstatement. These were orphans that had lost their parents to the violence that has ravaged Sudan, Uganda, and the region for more than 50 years. In this part of Africa, there were no governmental social services for children. And the violence and horrors were simply so overwhelming that many traditional missionary and aid organizations simply withdrew from the region. It was a situation so bad that news organizations and even the worlds governments simply looked the otherway. But along comes Sam Childers, a BIKER from Pennsylvania, and he took it upon himself to make a difference. One man on a mission to save the lives of children. Instead of being overwhelmed by the challenge – he SIMPLY DID IT. He did what nobody else seemed capable of doing – and he’s been saving the lives of children ever since. For more on Sam Childers and his organization – Angels of East Africa, googgle them online or visit their Facebook page (www. Facebook.com/MGP) @MachineGunPreacher. You can also visit our websites and follow our social media pages for updates on his work and how YOU can help. Back when we started Thunder Roads Ohio in 2011, we first crossed paths with Sam and learned of his work. I was already aware of the atrocities in Sudan after meeting a war refugee from the region while I was in school years before – so I felt a calling to help however I could. We supported a few appearances and helped share his story. But as happens in life, we became distracted with the realities of our own lives and we lost Thentouch.itjust

JOIN THE MACHINE GUN PREACHER

To which his reply was even simpler – “I never stopped.” We will share more of his story and work over the coming months and you can find more online, but the simple truth of his life and all that he’s accomplished was exactly what we needed to hear after all we’ve been through over the past year. It was the inspiration for a new charitable initiative and focus for our organization – Mission 2022.

TRO & ReasonsToRide.com

Thunder Roads Ohio launches campaign to support Sam Childers and his missions.

MISSION 2022: And the Machine Gun Preacher Bike Mission 2022 for us is all about launching a new initiative that is focused purely on making a difference. It’s not about politics, race, past history, or any other drama or excuses that might overwhelm or distract us. This isn’t JUST about saving the LIVES of children in Africa – it’s about waking us up and inspiring us to make more of our own lives. Sure there’s A LOT of craziness going on in the world – but we CAN NO LONGER simply leave it to others to fix. We all can’t travel to Africa, nor should we. We have plenty that we can do in our own corner of the world – or even just here in the United States. But in supporting SAM’S WORK – we can help energize change in our own communities. Our belief is that MISSION WORK and helping others is inspiring and can fuel change in our own lives. We’ve partnered with Sam’s organization – Angels of East Africa, LLC (a 501c3 organization) and Western Reserve Charities, Inc, to launch a campaign to not only support their work in Africa and organizations working to make a difference in our own communities right here in Ohio and the US. A central piece of this effort is a campaign to raffle off Sam’s own personal bike – a Harley-Davidson Street Glide that he had customized in his Pennsylvania shop. It’s one of the original MACHINE GUN PREACHER motorcycles and really a cool bike with a unique look and history. We are now helping to collect donations which give you the chance to win this motorcycle – while helping to both support the work of SAM and his organization AND local charities right here in OverOhio.the next several months we are going to share more and more about both Sam Childers and his work – as well as local individuals and organizations that are working in our own communities. Through the Bike Raffle and other initiatives you can help support these efforts and be a part of the change we need. We can NO LONGER simply wait for others to fix our communities and consequently our NATION as a whole. We need to step up ourselves. You can find out more and get your tickets online at ThunderRoadsOhio.com. Thanks to David Eggert, NEO Pro Imaging, for photos.

While Ohio Bike Week is Ohio’s Rally and kicks off the riding season for many, Thunder On The Strip is a true “Biker Homecoming” for thousands as they wind down after a summer of riding and head into the Fall / “off-season”. What started as a way to stretch the season out one more weekend – and maybe blow out the final inventory before this historic resort town winds down at the end of summer – has evolved into a celebration of great music and the riding lifestyle. It’s a great chance to catch up and party with riding friends from across the state, before things start to get cold. The local, community driven rally is one of our all time favorites and has been a mainstay on our schedule since it started more than 15 years ago – before we even had the magazine! Over the year’s the Rally has evolved and our “Thunder Zone” has moved down the street to the Marketplace Landing, adjacent to the Old Firehouse Winery and Sunset Bar. Friday through Sunday, we host a relaxed party with live music, vendors, and plenty of bike parking right on America’s North Coast – overlooking Lake Erie. It’s an amazing location with one of the best views on the Strip – especially as the sun sets over the lake. During the day, it’s a great place to relax and enjoy the park like setting – even rolling out a blanket alongside your bike. You can’t beat it. There’s even a historic Ferris Wheel that overlooks the lake!

Sportsterz Bar & Grill 5422 Lake Rd E, GOTL Sportsterz is not only one of the coolest and most popular ride stops in Ohio – it also was one of the original anchors of Thunderon-the-Strip. We called it home for years as we hosted the Thunder Zone in their parking lot and held burn out contests and bike shows that were highlights of the entire riding season for many. We have thousands of pictures on our Facebook from the Sportsterz Thunder Zones – if you were there, visit us online to check them out. Under new management, Sportsterz now has more of a focus on serving up great food (year-round) on their amazing patio which has an almost “Biker-Hofbrauhaus” feel to it. They still have GREAT music all weekend and are an essential stop for any “biker” hitting the strip. Don’t miss the vendors on-site.

Late-night, party central is certainly Yankies and the Goblin Amphitheater located behind it. While the entire “Strip” roars all weekend with a lot of really cool venues and great music – each night really ends at Yankies and their back lot stages. All weekend they have great tribute bands and feature acts on stage and it’s the place to catch up with everyone that is still going strong at the end of the night!

Saturday evening was dinner, social time and a good night's sleep to get ready for Sunday's ride home. Thunderstorms are common in the mountains but this time we lucked out with partly cloudy, mild weather that lasted all the way to Sunday morning, but storms were coming through Ohio and Kentucky. Jeremy Riffle, Jeff Dolence, Chris Meredith, Tim Mullins and I took back roads to I26 and got through Johnson City and Kingsport, TN, taking US and state routes through Virginia and into Kentucky. We got to Prestonsburg at about 11AM and looked at the radar. It looked like we could beat most of the rain so we kept moving. We crossed into Ohio at Aberdeen. Skies looked bad but we made it all the way to Buford, Ohio, before it started to rain. We didn't care- it was only another 57 miles to home from there, and we were home by 4PM. Another fun trip!

Saturday I left the previous day's fast group and rode my favorite Big Lynn rally route with old friends Jeff Dolence, Tim Mullins and Allan Skinner. The Twisty West route goes North and mostly West of the lodge. Most of the pavement is very smooth and clean. There are constant elevation changes and about three thousand corners on this route.

Jacob grins and says, "Well, if I took the dime, they'd stop doing it, and so far I've made $20!"

A woman was shopping at her local supermarket where she selected: A half-gallon of 2% milk, A carton of eggs, A quart of orange juice, A head of lettuce, A can of coffee, And a package of bacon. As she was unloading her items on the conveyor belt to check out, a drunk standing behind her watched as she placed the items in front of the cashier. While the cashier was ringing up her purchases, the drunk calmly stated, "You must be single." The woman was a startled by this proclamation, but she was Intrigued, since she was indeed single. She looked at her six items on the belt and saw nothing particularly unusual about her selections that could have tipped off the drunk to her marital status. Curiosity getting the better of her, she said "Well, you know what, you're absolutely correct, but how on earth did you know that?" The drunk replied, "Cause you're ugly."

Willie: Wow! How'd that happen?

Billy: I don't know. My aunt wrote my parents and said, "You won't recognize little Howie. He's grown another foot.”

Billy: I can't wait to go to Grandma's for Thanksgiving. My cousin's going to be there, and he has three feet!

Little Jacob is always being teased by the other neighborhood boys for being stupid. Their favorite joke is to offer Jacob his choice between a nickel and a dime -- Little Jacob always takes the nickel. One day, after Jacob takes the nickel, a neighbor man takes him aside and says, "Jacob, those boys are making fun of you. Don't you know that a dime is worth more than a nickel, even though the nickel's bigger?"
